  • ‘Wolf Man’ and ‘September 5’ now available at home; Florence Pugh, Andrew Garfield romance ‘We Live in Time’ hits Max

After Universal tried and failed to usher in a new era of their classic monster movies, 2020’s The Invisible Man helped resurrect the concept with Leigh Whannell’s clever and thoroughly modern take on the story.

Not only was that movie a hit with both audiences and critics, but it also seemed to provide a much-needed template for Universal to update its beloved characters to reflect the times. It took five years, but the studio has finally made a proper follow-up in Wolf Man, and they brought back Whannell to try his hand again.

The response to Wolf Man was markedly different than that of The Invisible Man, regarding both box office and critical reception. But is it worth your time? It debuted on digital this week, 17 days after its theatrical release, so you can find out for yourself.

Wolf Man isn’t the only movie newly available on streaming this week — the critically acclaimed, ripped-from-the-headlines period journalism thriller September 5 is out now, and A24’s hit romance We Live in Time, starring Florence Pugh and Andrew Garfield, hits Max.

The Pharrell Williams Lego biopic Piece by Piece is out on Peacock, which could be appealing to kids and parents alike. For after the kids go to bed, Kill, a hyper-violent action-thriller from India that earned rave reviews, is available on Hulu.

Here’s what to know about the theatrical movies newly available to stream as of this week and where you can find them.

Click on the links below to jump straight to a specific movie:

    Wolf Man

Wolf Man sets up a loaded metaphor in its terrific, tense opening sequence: A boy and his overbearing survivalist father hunting in the woods encounter some sort of animalistic creature. As the movie progresses, it becomes clear there’s not enough meat on the bone for the analogy they’re going for regarding parenthood, trauma, abuse and how we’re doomed to become our parents, no matter how hard we try to stray from the path.

It’s heavy stuff for a movie that could stand to have some fun, but there are still elements worthy of praise, including the practical makeup effects on the wolf transformation and the impactful, but all-too-brief moments of body horror. Christopher Abbott and Julia Garner are two great performers, but it’s hard to get a read on their characters.

Wolf Man is ambitious enough to recommend to those who like their genre fare more offbeat, but it doesn’t come together in the same satisfying way that Whannell’s previous effort did.

How to watch: Wolf Man is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and other video on demand platforms.

    We Live in Time

Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh star in A24’s romance We Live in Time, which you may want to watch with a box of tissues nearby. It’s all about the inventive structure here, as it’s a story you’ve otherwise likely seen before. The movie is told nonlinearly, turning it into a sort of puzzle you solve as it goes.

It’s a neat trick to keep you engaged in what could be overly familiar, weepy material, and both Pugh and Garfield are great in it as a couple that we see go through many ups and downs over a decade. It’s refreshing that the movie isn’t afraid to present the hardships as equally as it depicts the good times.

    September 5

    John Magaro in September 5.

September 5 has to be one of the most overlooked and underseen movies of 2024. It earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture — Drama, and was nominated for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscars, but still, it feels like few people have seen or heard of this movie.

Maybe some of that has to do with the fact that it is about events that were already famously depicted in the capital-G Great Munich, which Steven Spielberg directed. Still, that shouldn’t affect your interest in September 5, which tells a separate story.

It’s a journalism process movie that takes place during the 1972 Munich Olympics, when an American sports broadcasting crew found itself thrust into covering the hostage crisis involving Israeli athletes. It may be a journalism movie, and a great one at that, but it’s also a gripping thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat, as the sports journalists and the news junkies jockey to cover it effectively.

It’s about big ethical questions and moral quandaries that are as relevant today as they were in 1972, and you get the sense this moment in time was important in establishing broadcast journalism as we know it. A terrific nuts-and-bolts “how tough decisions get made in real time” movie!

How to watch: September 5 is now available to rent or purchase on Prime Video and other video on demand platforms.

    Piece by Piece

Piece by Piece isn’t the first animated movie to use the Lego aesthetic, but it’s certainly the first biopic about a real person to be depicted in Lego.

It’s not as strange as it sounds, and the movie actually does a good job of setting up why exactly you’re watching a movie about legendary music producer and musician Pharrell Williams in Lego form. Pharrell has synesthesia, which allows him to essentially see music, which alone is a clever justification for the colorful world in the movie.

There’s an infectious and inspiring creative energy that’s hard to ignore, and if the story of Williams’s rise from rags to riches wasn’t compelling enough, the soundtrack of wall-to-wall bangers that he either produced or sang on himself is undeniable.

    Kill

If you love a good revenge movie and you don’t mind a lot of blood and nonstop violence, the aptly titled Kill is for you. The plot is high-concept, yet simple: A guy is out for revenge, killing those who have wronged him, except it’s set entirely on a moving train.

Kill doesn’t pull a bait-and-switch exactly, but the degree to which the tenor of the violence changes after a certain death at the midpoint of the movie is unexpected and harrowing. A movie that revels in violent deaths suddenly starts showing you that every death means the world to someone — what was once just bombastic entertainment has been rendered upsetting and hard to shake.

Kill does a great job of building emotional stakes so the audience cares about what’s going on, and thankfully, the action is also shot well and choreographed so there’s rarely a dull moment.

How to watch: Kill is now streaming on Hulu.

“It is with deep sorrow that we mourn the passing of former City Councilwoman Pat Gibson Hye Moore, a true trailblazer, dedicated public servant and a beloved member of our community,” Democratic Party Chair Isaac Wilson wrote.

“Pat has had her hand in so many things,” said former Florence Mayor Teresa Myers Ervin.

Ervin served on the City Council and as mayor with Moore.

Ervin said Moore will be remembered as a straight talking, hard working leader who always put the community first.

Community remembers beloved Florence former councilwoman

Florence’s former councilwoman and beloved community member Pat Gibson Hye Moore died Thursday morning following a longtime illness.

Hye-Moore passed away at her home surrounded by her husband and loving family.

She served on Florence City Council for many years but decided not to seek re-election in November of 2022, due to health reasons.

On her very last day in office, the city released the following statement about Hye-Moore.

She continued to work in the community even during her illness helping families, and the homeless population and fighting for causes she believed in.

“Pat Gibson-Hye Moore grew up in New York City and attended John Jay College of Criminal Justice, receiving a degree in Criminal Justice and Psychology. Pat relocated to Florence, South Carolina in 1990, stepping into the next season of her life. She is now married to her soul mate, Kermit Ronnie Moore, and is a member of Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church where she serves as Chair of the Political Action Committee and is a member of the Gospel Choir. Before being elected to the City Council in 2016, she served on the Florence One School Board for eleven years and the Florence Housing Commission for nine years. She is the founder of the East Florence Community Organization and the founder of Hearts for the Homeless. She is the Co-founder of the Alliance for Youth, a Co-founder of the SC Pecan Music and Food Festival, a National Youth Sports Program Board Member, an Executive Committee member of the Florence County Democratic Party, the Co-chair for the Florence Christmas Parade, a General Manager of the Raging Storm traveling Teen Basketball team, an Executive Committee member of the NAACP, a voting member of the Florence Area Transportation (F.L.A.T.S.) Commission and was recently appointed by the Mayor of Florence to the City-County Conference Committee. Pat Gibson-Hye Moore has a reputation for being a community and political activist. She uses her voice to speak for the voiceless and believes that, in order to help change the world, one must first start by changing themselves. She is a true and dedicated public servant and thoroughly enjoys what she does and prays for strength to do even more.”

Hye-Moore’s dear friend, Betty Gregg, said she was a wonderful person and a great asset to Florence.

Gregg is a community activist and often worked with Hye-Moore on many causes to better the community.

She said she’ll miss her longtime friend.

Florence County Democratic Party Chairman, Issac Wilson called Hye-Moore a fierce leader with a big heart to help people.

Wilson released the following statement on Hye-Moore’s death:

“It is with deep sorrow and a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of former City Councilwoman Pat Gibson Hye Moore. Her death marks the end of an era for Florence, but her incredible legacy will forever remain an indelible part of our community’s history. Pat Gibson Hye Moore was not just a public servant; she was a tireless advocate, a courageous leader, and a champion for justice and equality. Pat broke barriers and paved the way for future generations of leaders, especially women of color. Her unwavering dedication to the people she served was evident in every decision she made, every initiative she led, and every individual she uplifted. Throughout her career, Pat was a passionate voice for the most vulnerable in our community. She advocated for equitable access to resources, better opportunities for all, and a government that worked for the people—not the other way around. Her leadership on critical issues, from affordable housing and education to healthcare and public safety, has shaped Florence in profound and lasting ways. She was known for her integrity, her vision, and her ability to bring people together, even in the most challenging times. Beyond her work on the City Council, Pat was a mentor, a role model, and a fierce ally in the fight for social justice. Her commitment to service extended far beyond politics—she was deeply involved in countless community organizations, always striving to make Florence a better place for everyone, regardless of background or circumstance. While we mourn her loss, we also celebrate the remarkable life she lived and the many lives she touched. Pat’s legacy is one of progress, compassion, and resilience. She showed us that leadership is not just about holding office, but about serving others with dignity, respect, and an unwavering commitment to the greater good. On behalf of the Florence County Democratic Party, I extend my deepest condolences to Pat’s family, friends, and all who were privileged to know and work alongside her. We stand with them in this time of grief, knowing that Pat’s spirit will continue to inspire and guide us as we move forward. Pat Gibson Hye Moore leaves a lasting imprint on our hearts and on the city she loved. We will honor her memory by carrying forward the work she so passionately believed in, striving to create a brighter, more inclusive future for everyone in Florence County. Rest in peace, Pat. Your contributions will never be forgotten, and your legacy will continue to shape the path toward a better tomorrow.”

At this time, funeral arrangements are incomplete.

The community of Florence came together on Saturday to remember and honor the life of a beloved former councilwoman. Friends, family, and community members gathered at the Florence Community Center to share stories, memories, and pay tribute to the lasting impact she had on the town.

The former councilwoman, who served on the council for over a decade, was known for her dedication to public service, her passion for improving the community, and her tireless advocacy for the residents of Florence. She was a true leader, always putting the needs of others before her own and working tirelessly to make Florence a better place for all.

During the memorial service, friends and colleagues spoke about her kindness, her unwavering commitment to her community, and the countless ways she had touched the lives of those around her. Many shared stories of her selflessness, her sense of humor, and her ability to bring people together.

As the community gathered to remember and honor her, there was a palpable sense of gratitude for all that she had done and a deep sadness at her passing. But there was also a sense of hope, as those in attendance vowed to carry on her legacy and continue the work she had started.

The community of Florence will always remember and cherish the impact she had on their lives, and her memory will live on in the countless lives she touched. She will be greatly missed, but her spirit will continue to inspire and guide the community for years to come.
