  • Manchester City formally approach FC Porto over midfielder Nico Gonzalez

Premier League champions Manchester City have made a late formal approach to FC Porto for midfielder Nico Gonzalez, according to emerging reports.

Txiki Begiristain and his recruitment colleagues have been active in the ongoing January transfer market, and having already spent in excess of £120 million on three new players, the club remain very much active in the final days of the window.

That ongoing search centres around the middle of Pep Guardiola’s operation, and having seen midfield struggles emerge throughout the season particularly in light of Rodri’s long-term injury, there is an awareness that investment must be made in the position.

So far, Manchester City have had little luck in bringing in a new central midfielder, having showing an interest in a short-term loan deal for Juventus’ Douglas Luiz, and holding admiration in Atalanta’s Éderson.

But with just a few days remaining in the market, it appears as though the pursuit of a new name in the central role is intensifying, with Txiki Begiristain now taking the search and conversation over to Portuguese football.

According to exclusive information from transfer market insider Fabrizio Romano, Manchester City have now made a formal approach to FC Porto over central midfielder, Nico González with talks now underway.

It is detailed that the Portuguese giants still hope to keep Gonzalez and are set to ask for an important transfer fee from Manchester City or else the player will not make the move to the Etihad Stadium this month.

Interestingly, it is pointed out that the 23-year-old Spaniard has a release clause in his Porto contract worth €60 million and his former club, FC Barcelona retain a 40 per cent sell-on clause as part of the deal that saw the player head to Portugal in 2023.

Additional reporting from Sky Sports News’ Lyall Thomas has further revealed that Manchester City are not prepared to meet the player’s release clause, and it remains to be seen whether Porto are open to negotiation.

Gonzalez has been at the Portuguese side for only one-year-and-a-half after joining Porto from Barcelona in July 2023, signing a five-year contract in the Primeira Liga for a reported fee of €8.5 million.

Should Manchester City manage to find an agreement with Porto, any such deal would represent a significant profit for the club, and make Gonzalez the latest player from Estadio do Dragao to represent the Etihad Stadium club, too.

In total, there have been four connections linking Manchester City with FC Porto, after Nicolas Otamendi, Fernando Reges, Danilo, and Eliaquim Mangala represented the two clubs with varying success when it came to their Premier League careers.

Manchester City has officially made their move to sign FC Porto midfielder Nico Gonzalez, as the Premier League champions have formally approached the Portuguese club for talks.

Gonzalez, who has been impressing in the midfield for Porto, has caught the eye of City’s scouts and manager Pep Guardiola. The 23-year-old Argentine has been a standout performer for Porto this season, showcasing his technical ability, passing range, and defensive awareness.

City are reportedly keen on bolstering their midfield options and see Gonzalez as a player who can add depth and quality to their squad. The club is said to be in discussions with Porto over a potential transfer fee and contract terms for the talented midfielder.

Gonzalez’s potential move to City would represent a significant step up in his career, as he would have the opportunity to play for one of the top clubs in Europe and compete for major trophies on a regular basis.

Stay tuned for further updates on this developing transfer saga as City look to secure the services of Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto.

English Premier League champions Manchester City have officially approached Portuguese club FC Porto over Argentine midfielder Nico Gonzalez. The 20-year-old has been a standout performer for Porto this season, catching the eye of many top clubs across Europe.

Manchester City’s interest in Gonzalez comes as no surprise, as they look to bolster their midfield options ahead of next season. The talented youngster has been compared to City’s very own Kevin De Bruyne, with his vision, passing range, and ability to dictate play from deep midfield positions.

Gonzalez has been a key player for Porto this season, helping them in their quest for domestic and European success. His performances have not gone unnoticed by City’s scouting team, who have been monitoring his progress closely.

It remains to be seen whether Porto will be willing to part ways with Gonzalez, but Manchester City are believed to be preparing a lucrative offer to tempt them into selling. With Pep Guardiola’s side looking to strengthen their squad in the coming months, Gonzalez could prove to be a valuable addition to their midfield ranks.

  • Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso formally leave ECOWAS regional bloc

ABUJA, Nigeria (AP) — The junta-led West African nations of Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso have formally withdrawn from the regional bloc known as ECOWAS, the body said Wednesday.

The previously announced withdrawal, which marks the culmination of a yearlong process during which the group tried to avert an unprecedented disintegration, “has become effective today,” ECOWAS said in a statement.

The bloc, however, said that it has also decided to “keep ECOWAS’ doors open,” and requested member nations to continue to accord the trio their membership privileges, including free movement within the region with an ECOWAS passport.

ECOWAS president Omar Alieu Touray told reporters in Nigeria’s capital Abuja that despite the split, the bloc hopes to still collaborate with the countries in tackling some of the region’s challenges, including the deadly extremist violence ripping through the region.

The split “worsens a legitimacy crisis of ECOWAS which has often failed people’s expectations in upholding the rule of law,” said Ulf Laessing, head of the Sahel program at the Konrad Adenauer Foundation.

“That the three poorest member states decided to leave the bloc makes ECOWAS in the eyes of its citizens look even more like a loser in this conflict,” he said.

Widely seen as West Africa’s leading political and regional authority, the 15-nation ECOWAS was formed in 1975 to “promote economic integration” in member states. It has struggled in recent years to reverse coups in the region where citizens have complained of not benefitting from rich natural resources.

The bloc has since grown to become the region’s top political authority, often collaborating with states to solve domestic challenges on various fronts from politics to economics and security.

In parts of West Africa, however, ECOWAS has lost its effectiveness and support among citizens, who see it as representing only the interests of the leaders and not that of the masses, said Oge Onubogu, director of the Africa Program at the Washington-based Wilson Center think tank.

After coming into power, the juntas in Niger, Mali and Burkina Faso announced that they were leaving ECOWAS. They then created their own security partnership known as the Alliance of Sahel States, severed military ties with longstanding Western partners such as U.S. and France, and turned to Russia for military support.

It’s the first time in the bloc’s half-century of existence that its members have withdrawn in such a manner. Analysts say it’s an unprecedented blow to the group that could threaten efforts to return democracy and help stabilize the increasingly fragile region.

ECOWAS said that its members were also required to treat goods and services coming from the three countries in accordance with ECOWAS regulations and provide full support and cooperation to ECOWAS officials from the countries during their assignments.

In a historic decision, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have officially announced their decision to withdraw from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) regional bloc. This move comes after months of deliberation and discussions among the three countries, citing various reasons for their departure.

Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have expressed dissatisfaction with the functioning of ECOWAS and believe that they can better address their economic and security challenges outside of the regional bloc. The three countries have also highlighted concerns about the lack of solidarity and support from other member states, particularly in addressing the growing threats of terrorism and instability in the region.

Despite this decision, Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso have reiterated their commitment to regional cooperation and have expressed their willingness to engage with ECOWAS on a bilateral basis. The three countries have emphasized the importance of maintaining strong ties with their neighboring countries and working together to promote peace, security, and development in West Africa.

As Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso embark on this new chapter outside of ECOWAS, it remains to be seen how this decision will impact the regional dynamics and cooperation in West Africa. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.

  • Diamond Sports Group Formally Out of Bankruptcy, Rebrands

Diamond Sports Group Formally Out of Bankruptcy, Rebrands

It’s not just a new year, but a new era for the company formerly known as Diamond Sports Group—which now has a new name.

The regional sports network holding company announced it has formally emerged from Chapter 11 bankruptcy “with a significantly deleveraged balance sheet.” The firm has also rebranded as Main Street Sports Group, with local rights to 13 NBA teams, eight NHL teams and eight MLB teams through their regional sports networks.

“Emerging from this process is the culmination of over 20 months of incredibly hard work to transform our business and position us to better serve passionate local fans across our markets,” company CEO David Preschlack said in a statement.

Main Street Sports will continue to operate 16 RSNs, collectively known as FanDuel Sports Network after the gaming company took over naming rights from Bally Sports in October.

Funds managed by PGIM Fixed Income, Hein Park Capital Management LP, Discovery Capital Management, Hudson Bay Capital Management LP, Alta Fundamental Advisers LLC and others now hold equity in Main Street Sports for their debt claims. The rebranded company said it has reduced nearly $9 billion of pre-petition debt to $200 million.

The announcement comes seven weeks after Judge Christopher Lopez of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of Texas gave Main Street Sports the go-ahead to move forward with its linear and streaming TV plans.

Prior to the crucial mid-November hearing in front of the judge, Main Street Sports locked in renewals with at least six MLB teams while continuing to speak with the Kansas City Royals. Those renewals represented a reversal after it appeared that Main Street Sports previously agreed to drop all other MLB teams ahead of the 2025 season except one, the Atlanta Braves.

Main Street Sports retains the local rights to the Braves and Royals along with the Los Angeles Angels, Miami Marlins, Milwaukee Brewers, St. Louis Cardinals, Detroit Tigers and Tampa Bay Rays.

NHL teams that will remain under the Main Street Sports umbrella are the Carolina Hurricanes, Columbus Blue Jackets, Detroit Red Wings, Los Angeles Kings, Minnesota Wild, Nashville Predators, St. Louis Blues and Tampa Bay Lightning.

Thirteen NBA teams will also stick with Main Street Sports: the Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, Cleveland Cavaliers, Detroit Pistons, Indiana Pacers, Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies, Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Oklahoma City Thunder, Orlando Magic and San Antonio Spurs.
