  • Fort Belvoir woman pleads guilty in brutal beating of son | Headlines

A Fort Belvoir woman pleaded guilty Tuesday to federal charges in connection with a brutal assault on her 10-year-old son, who escaped by climbing out a window and jumping from the roof.

China Ashley Charles, 38, entered the plea on charges of assault with a dangerous weapon; assault by striking, beating, and wounding and cruelty to children, the U.S. District Attorney’s Office in Alexandria said in a release.

According to court documents, on Oct. 8, Charles was enraged at her 10-year-old child because his bedroom was messy. She struck him with a chair, dresser drawers, a hot iron, a charging wire, a hairbrush, and a large serving spoon.

“She attempted to strike his face with the iron, but he blocked it with his hands,” the release said. “When Charles hit the child with the charging wire, his finger was cut and began bleeding.”

Charles tried to hide her crime by making the child sit in a cold bath and splashing cold water on his face, according to court documents.

The child finally dropped onto the roof from his second-floor bedroom and then jumped down from the roof and fled, prosecutors said.

“He was recovered by police with substantial bruises, abrasions, a knot on the back of his head and a cut and bleeding finger,” the release said.

He was taken by ambulance to the emergency room at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital for treatment.

Law enforcement recovered numerous items from Charles’ home, including the iron, chair, hairbrush, spoon, multiple dresser drawers, and a sweater and a shirt with “I’M ON PUNISHMENT” written on them in black marker.

“Several of these items appeared to have blood on them, and further examination confirmed that the child’s blood was located on the iron and at least one dresser drawer,” the release said. “The child’s sister reported that China had been beating him for the past four years.”

Charles is scheduled to be sentenced on May 9 and faces up to 16 years in prison.

Erik S. Siebert, U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, and Jake Cameron, Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Office, Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division, made the announcement after U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema accepted the plea.

“Fort Belvoir woman pleads guilty in brutal beating of son | Headlines”

In a shocking turn of events, a woman from Fort Belvoir has pleaded guilty to the brutal beating of her own son. The incident, which occurred last year, left the child with severe injuries and sparked outrage in the local community.

The woman, whose name has not been released to protect the identity of the child, admitted to the charges of child abuse and assault during a court hearing this week. According to authorities, the beating was so severe that the child had to be hospitalized for several weeks.

Neighbors and community members were shocked to hear about the incident, with many expressing their disbelief and anger at the woman’s actions. The child is said to be recovering from his injuries, but the emotional scars may take much longer to heal.

  • Trump secretary of defense pick supports renaming Fort Liberty

In a surprising turn of events, Trump’s secretary of defense pick has come out in support of renaming Fort Liberty. This move comes amid growing calls for the renaming of military bases and installations that are named after Confederate generals and figures.

The secretary of defense pick, a retired general with extensive military experience, stated that it is important for the military to reflect the values and ideals of the country it serves. He believes that renaming Fort Liberty would be a positive step towards promoting unity and inclusivity within the armed forces.

The decision to support renaming Fort Liberty has garnered both praise and criticism from various quarters. Supporters of the move applaud the secretary of defense pick for taking a stand against symbols of the Confederacy, while critics argue that renaming military bases erases history and undermines the legacy of those who served there.

Despite the controversy surrounding the issue, the secretary of defense pick remains firm in his stance and is committed to promoting a more inclusive and diverse military. Only time will tell how this decision will shape the future of Fort Liberty and other military installations across the country.

  • Westpark Tollway, Fort Bend Parkway CLOSED due to Houston winter storm

Major roadways in Fort Bend County will be made unavailable tonight ahead of the winter storm expected to hit Houston.

In a notice on its website, the Fort Bend County Toll Road Authority announced that West Park Tollway and Fort Bend Parkway would be closed following the conclusion of Monday night’s rush hour.

The roads are expected to be made available again tomorrow, but a specific time for reopening was not provided.

    Here’s the organization’s statement in-full:

Due to inclement weather conditions, the Toll Road Authority will close the Westpark Tollway and Fort Bend Parkway tonight, January 20, 2025 after rush hour. These roads are expected to reopen tomorrow, weather permitting.

Additionally, along the Grand Parkway from the Westpark Tollway to US 59, overpasses will be closed tonight after rush hour and traffic still on the road will use the at-grade mainlanes and ramps then go through the cross street intersections. The exception to this are the sections between West Airport and Highway 90A, and between New Territory and River Park. These two sections will remain open as long as maintenance crews can prevent icing on the Brazos River and Oyster Creek and Owens Road bridges. The Grand Parkway is also expected to reopen tomorrow, weather permitting.

Winter storm wreaks havoc on Houston roads: Westpark Tollway and Fort Bend Parkway CLOSED

The recent winter storm has brought chaos to Houston’s roadways, with the Westpark Tollway and Fort Bend Parkway being forced to shut down due to hazardous conditions. The slick icy roads have made travel unsafe, prompting authorities to close these major thoroughfares until further notice.

Drivers are urged to stay off the roads if possible and to exercise extreme caution if they must venture out. The winter storm has created treacherous driving conditions, with black ice and snow accumulation making it difficult to navigate the streets safely.

Authorities are working diligently to clear the roads and make them passable again, but in the meantime, it is crucial for residents to heed the warnings and avoid unnecessary travel. Stay safe, stay warm, and stay off the roads until the winter storm passes.

  • Yee-haw! Fort Worth hospitality industry kicks up its heels as stock show brings home the bacon

The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo is a Fort Worth institution. So too is Pulido’s Kitchen and Cantina, a fixture of the city’s dining scene since 1966.

And this year, the two will join together, as Pulido’s, now part of the locally owned Westland Restaurant Group, will have a location on the stock show grounds.

“I’m excited as I can be about it,” said Bourke Harvey, managing partner at Westland Restaurant Group. “We’ve catered events on-site and off-site at the stock show, but this year we’ll actually be a part of it.”

Harvey, along with operating partner Gigi Howell, acquired Pulido’s in late 2023 just as the restaurant was preparing to close for good. He said one of the company’s goals in reviving the restaurant is to be more involved in events like the stock show and further integrate the Pulido’s brand into the city’s culture.

“That’s why we’re doing more work at the botanic gardens, things like that,” he said. “We want to be part of Fort Worth and build our brand in the process.”

The official name of the location at the stock show will be Pulido’s Rodeo Kitchen. It will be located in the Centennial Room at the Moncrief Building.

While Pulido’s and the stock show are echoes of Fort Worth’s past, the new restaurant is lassoing some new technology to better serve its customers.

Pulido’s Rodeo Kitchen will have seating for about 40, but Harvey knows that many of the exhibitors and kids showing animals need to eat, too. They have worked with some of their point-of-sale vendors to develop efficient online ordering systems to cater to the people at the show who have limited time for a meal.

“A lot of those kids showing their animals and exhibitors, they don’t want to leave their animals or the area for long,” said Harvey. “So we’ve worked to make it very efficient for them, with a QR code, to order food and not be gone from their stall or whatever for long.”

Pulido’s isn’t the only restaurant benefiting from the influx of foot traffic between Jan. 17 and Feb. 8. According to Visit Fort Worth, about a third of visitors to the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo hail from outside Fort Worth. While the visitors spend much of their time at the stock show, they also frequent the city’s hotels, restaurants and shopping centers before and after the show.

Visit Fort Worth says more fans, up 12%, are staying on the grounds and attending events such as the Roadhouse concert series or eating at area restaurants instead of saddling up and going home.

The 125th edition of the show in 2022 brought in $115 million in direct spending and attracted 1.2 million people, according to a stock show report to Fort Worth City Council that May.

This is the second year that two of the city’s new high-end hotels — The Crescent Hotel Fort Worth and Bowie House — have sought to corral and market to the stock show’s more well-heeled crowd.

The Bowie House will be offering several special events, including a showcase of Fort Worth musical talent, complimentary boot shines, and line dancing and two-stepping lessons.

Harvey, who is also a partner or owns restaurants in seven other states, said the stock show and its timing is an economic bonanza for Fort Worth restaurants and the hospitality industry. The first couple of months after the holidays are the worst time in the restaurant business, he said.

“At my restaurants in other states, after the holidays, it’s not a question of ‘are we going to lose money?’ It’s a question of ‘how much?’” he said. “Not here. The stock show sets Fort Worth apart and for restaurants, hotels, all hospitality, it means a lot. And for some restaurants, it means everything.”

Harvey also caters to the stock show crowd at his Curly’s Frozen Custard restaurant at 4017 Camp Bowie Blvd., just a few blocks from the event. He has served a Cow Patty special featuring a brownie and chocolate custard for several years during the stock show. This year, requests for the special concoction began in November.

“I started serving it two months early this year because I had so many requests,” he said. “That’s the power of the stock show.”

The All-Western Parade steps off Saturday morning to officially open the 2025 Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo.

Thousands of spectators line the streets of downtown Cowtown to watch this spectacular yearly event. More than 3,000 horses will prance along a two-mile route up Main Street and then down Houston Street.

Among its nearly 150 entries are more than 70 riding clubs from across the country, including the Hawaii Pa’u Riders; a dozen marching bands that include several local high schools, the TCU Horned Frog Marching Band, and more than 30 wagons and floats. No motorized vehicles are allowed.

A special guest of the parade will be 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Austen Smith of Keller, the youngest member of the U.S. Olympic Shooting Team who competed in women’s skeet shooting in the Paris Summer Games.

Leading it will be two members of the legendary Rafter G Rodeo Company based in Terrell.

Megan Gay Maier and Summer Gay are the next generation in a family that’s been connected to the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo since since 1979.

The women are proud to be cowgirls and granddaughters of the iconic Kay Gay who once said, “If you’re gonna ride a horse, you might as well be glamorous and flashy.”

To Stock Show fans, she’s likely best known for the design and creation of the dozens of glamourous “outfits” worn by the Grand Entry’s 12 pivot setters and two riders who lead the procession carrying the American and Texas flags.

Summer and Megan carry on that tradition today and will be at every rodeo performance at Dickies Arena.

    But Saturday’s parade comes first.

The two-mile parade will begin on Main Street and Weatherford Street south of the Tarrant County Courthouse, will continue south to the Convention Center, turn right at 9th Street and right on Houston Street, and continue north on Houston Street. Street closures will begin at 9 a.m.

The Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo runs from January 17 through February 8.
