Damonic Williams’ return fortifies foundation of Oklahoma’s defense for 2025
Three words were all Damonic Williams needed to convey his intent: Job’s not done.
The 6-foot-1, 312-pound defensive tackle decided one season at Oklahoma wasn’t enough. He wanted to come back for one more season, choosing to return to the Sooners for his final year of eligibility — with a chance to improve his NFL Draft stock and OU’s defense in front of him in 2025.
Williams announced his decision to return for his final season Monday evening, a much-needed and welcomed bit of good news for Oklahoma after a whirlwind few days that included a disappointing loss to Navy in the Armed Forces Bowl and the sudden departure of defensive coordinator Zac Alley for the same role at West Virginia.
Williams was the marquee transfer addition for Oklahoma last offseason, when the Sooners landed the talented defensive tackle out of the portal during the post-spring window. He started his career out at TCU, where he started all 27 games across his first two collegiate seasons, and he immediately slotted into that same role for Oklahoma this fall — despite not joining the team until the summer, meaning he had to quickly familiarize himself with the playbook and Brent Venables’ defensive scheme.
“I shocked myself, to be honest,” Williams said earlier this month. “A lot of the defensive tackles helped me to get the plays in. But just the fact that I came in like in July or something like that, I had a month to get down the plays and did that with the help of the DTs and coach (Todd) Bates and coach (Miguel) Chavis. I was proud of myself.”
The Oklahoma Sooners have received a massive boost to their defense for the 2025 season with the return of star linebacker Damonic Williams.
