Fred VanVleet and the Houston Rockets “have mutual interest” in an extension, according to NBA insider Jake Fischer.

Both team and player are “motivated” to keep VanVleet in Houston beyond his $44.9 million club option for the 2025-26 season, according to Fischer.

“The Rockets will have the chance to decline VanVleet’s option and rework a multi-year deal this summer,” Fischer wrote.

Houston signed VanVleet ahead of the 2023-24 season. The pointer guard has started all 116 games he has played for the franchise so far.

This article will be updated soon to provide more information and analysis.

The NBA offseason is in full swing, and one player who is generating a lot of buzz in the rumor mill is Toronto Raptors guard Fred VanVleet. According to reports, VanVleet and the Houston Rockets have expressed “mutual interest” in a contract extension.

VanVleet, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent this offseason, is coming off a breakout season with the Raptors. The 26-year-old guard averaged a career-high 17.6 points, 6.6 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game while shooting 39% from three-point range.

The Rockets, on the other hand, are in need of a point guard after trading away Russell Westbrook earlier this offseason. VanVleet would be a great fit for Houston, as he is a capable playmaker and a reliable three-point shooter.

While nothing is set in stone yet, it will be interesting to see how the situation unfolds in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more updates on Fred VanVleet and the Houston Rockets as the NBA offseason continues.

Welcome to “Good Morning, Illini Nation,” your daily dose of college basketball news from Illini beat writer and AP Top 25 voter Scott Richey. He’ll offer up insights every morning on Brad Underwood’s team and college basketball at large:

The first question to Nebraska coach Fred Hoiberg on Wednesday in Lincoln, Neb., was about Illinois. Specifically the challenges the Illini might present in Thursday’s game at Pinnacle Bank Arena.

“A lot jumps out on problems they can cause,” Hoiberg told reporters. “First of all, they play with a lot of pace. We’ve got to do a good job of getting back in transition. They really share it. They do a good job of creating threes.

“(Kasparas) Jakucionis is incredibly impressive at the point guard position for his age. He’s a wizard in ball screens. We’re going to have to do a good job not only trying to contest shots, but contest passes and buy rotations time and close out with urgency.”

Jakucionis’ playmaking and the Illini’s shot making potential were just two aspects of Thursday’s matchup that give Hoiberg pause. Rebounding is another.

“The other thing with Illinois is they are relentless on the glass,” the Cornhuskers coach said. “They had 21 offensive rebounds in their last game against Northwestern. They had 15 at Michigan State, which is damn near impossible to do with that team and their physicality.

“They lead the nation in rebound margin, and they crash everybody. They don’t send anybody back. They all five crash, and if we don’t make contact and play physical it’s going to be a long day.”

Check out Hoiberg’s full press conference here:

    Good Morning, Illini Nation!

Former NBA player and current head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers, Fred Hoiberg, recently shared his thoughts on the University of Illinois basketball program. Hoiberg, who played college basketball at Iowa State and later coached the Chicago Bulls, had high praise for the Illini team and their head coach, Brad Underwood.

In a recent interview, Hoiberg commended Underwood for his leadership and the way he has built a strong and competitive team in Champaign. He highlighted the talent and depth of the Illini roster, particularly singling out standout players like Ayo Dosunmu and Kofi Cockburn.

Hoiberg also mentioned the exciting rivalry between Nebraska and Illinois, noting the intensity and competitiveness of their matchups. He expressed his respect for the Illini program and their passionate fan base, acknowledging the team’s potential to make a deep run in the NCAA tournament.

As a former player and coach with experience at both the college and professional levels, Hoiberg’s insights into the Illinois basketball program carry weight. It’s always great to hear positive feedback from respected figures in the basketball world, and it’s clear that the Illini are making a strong impression on Hoiberg and others around the country.

So, Illini Nation, let’s continue to support our team and show the rest of the college basketball world what we’re made of. With the guidance of Coach Underwood and the talent on our roster, the future looks bright for Illinois basketball. Go Illini!

  • Fred L. Goldenberg: Medical debt has no party affiliation | Business

With the passage of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) we saw millions of insulin dependent Medicare beneficiaries receive their life saving drug at $35. On January 1, 2025, the next major provision enacted has all Medicare beneficiaries being able to cap their out-of-pocket drug costs at $2,000 for the year.

In the first year alone, it is estimated that approximately 3.2 million beneficiaries will see savings. By 2029, this number is anticipated to grow to over 4 million.

According to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF), had the cap been in place in 2021, 1.5 million Medicare beneficiaries would have saved money due to the fact that their out-of-pocket drug cost exceeded $2,000. KFF looked back over a 10-year period, from 2012 to 2021, and found that over 5 million Part D enrollees had out-of-pocket drug costs of over $2000 or more in at least one year, showing the long-range impact of the cap going forward.

In addition to the $35 and $2,000 caps the bill authorized Medicare to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies to lower the cost of some of the highest priced and most utilized drugs on the market. Which at first glance sounds like a real win for us consumers. But in typical DC give and take, Medicare was limited to initially negotiate for ten drugs.

Since the typical formulary (list of covered drugs), depending on the drug plan you’re on, has between 3,000 and 6,000 covered drugs, it’s a drop in a very large bucket.

The drugs they chose were: Eliquis, Jardiance, Xarelto, Januvia, Farxiga, Entresto, Enbrel, Imbruvica, Stelara, and NovoLog/Fiasp. For those of you on these Tier 3 drugs you won’t see a price reduction until January 1, 2026.

The discounts are significant, but since most individuals on these drugs also have other drugs as well, the $2,000 cap will be the most significant aspect going forward. For example, Eliquis’ 2023 list price used for negotiations was $561. They discounted it to $176, a 69% reduction. Yet still with an annual cost of over $2,000.

The IRA allows for additional price negotiations going forward:

January 1, 2027, an additional 15 Part D drugs will have negotiated prices implemented. President Biden just announced the list: Ozempic; Rybelsus; Wegovy, Trelegy Ellipta, Xtandi, Pomalyst, Ibrance, Ofev, Linzess, Calquence, Austedo; Austedo XP, Breo Ellipta, Tradjenta, Xifaxan, Vraylar, Janumet; Janumet XP, and Otezla.

January 1, 2028, Up to 15 more drugs, including those covered under Part B, will be added to the negotiation list. So, all you cancer patients hang in there. Only four years till you get help.

On Jan. 1, 2029, and subsequent years Medicare will expand list to include 20 additional drugs each year.

I think the IRA is an amazing achievement. Impacting millions of individuals. Providing them with financial relief in an arena where they have no control. Pay for the medicine or die. Yet it all might be for naught.

The IRA was passed on party lines. In the Senate all 50 Democrats voted in favor, and all 50 Republicans voted against. Vice President Harris cast the tiebreaking vote to pass the bill. In the House of Representatives, the vote was similarly divided along party lines. Consequently, the IRA may be in jeopardy due to the incoming administrations criticism of the bill and seeking retribution. Which would be a terrible mistake and harm countless numbers of people. The Medicare provisions of the bill serve all Medicare beneficiaries no matter what party affiliation.

Medical debt is a significant issue among Medicare beneficiaries. In 2020, nearly 4 million adults aged 65 and older reported having unpaid medical bills, despite 98% of them having health insurance coverage.

A 2022 survey by the KFF found that more than one in five adults aged 65 and older (22%) had some form of debt resulting from medical or dental bills.

Additionally, a study published in JAMA Health Forum in December 2021 revealed that nearly 11% of Medicare beneficiaries struggled to pay their medical bills and delayed care due to financial constraints.

The choice is clear. Win with grace and protect the most vulnerable among us or seek revenge and harm millions — including those who put you there.

Medical debt is a universal issue that affects individuals from all walks of life, regardless of their political beliefs. Fred L. Goldenberg, a renowned healthcare advocate, has been vocal about the fact that medical debt knows no party affiliation.

In a recent interview, Goldenberg emphasized that the burden of medical debt is not limited to any specific demographic or political group. He stressed the importance of addressing this issue through bipartisan efforts, highlighting the need for policy changes that prioritize affordable healthcare for all Americans.

As the healthcare system continues to face challenges, it is crucial for policymakers to come together to find solutions that alleviate the financial strain placed on individuals and families. Medical debt should not be a partisan issue, but rather a shared concern that requires collaboration and compassion.

Fred L. Goldenberg’s advocacy for affordable healthcare and his commitment to addressing medical debt transcends political boundaries. By recognizing that this issue affects individuals regardless of their party affiliation, we can work towards creating a healthcare system that is equitable and accessible to all.

  • Houston Rockets Top Cleveland Cavaliers 109-108 Behind Fred VanVleet’s 26 Points

The Houston Rockets looked to bounce back from their loss against the Detroit Pistons on Monday as they faced the Cleveland Cavaliers back at the Toyota Center Wednesday night.

Cleveland entered the night on a two-game win streak and the best record in the NBA at 36-6.

Houston, however, was not phased as it came out of the gates aggressive, attacking the rim at will. The Cavaliers were hitting shots early, but the Rockets countered with quick buckets on the break.

Forward Amen Thompson got off to a quick start, scoring six points in the first seven minutes of the game. Cam Whitmore joined Thompson, scoring 10 points in the opening quarter to help give Houston a 39-32 lead at the end of the first.

Cleveland kept it close in the second, slowing down the Rockets’ offense but still continued to struggle to score on its own end. Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell ended the first half with 13 points, but his team still trailed 61-53 at the end of the second quarter.

Houston’s offense came back alive in the third as veteran guard Fred VanVleet found his stroke from deep, knocking down two threes to help extend the lead. Star guard Jalen Green also caught fire, scoring 8 points in the third to help give the Rockets a double-digit lead at the end of the quarter.

Cleveland, however, wasn’t out of it just yet as it went on a run with under five minutes left in the game, erasing Houston’s lead.

It found its shooting stroke late and the Rockets had no answer. the Cavaliers took a six-point lead with four minutes remaining, but VanVleet wasn’t going to let them get away with it.

He knocked down two late threes with under three minutes remaining to help tie the game. The game then went back and forth the rest of the way, but it was a wild sequence of events in the waning seconds that determined who came out with the win.

Thompson forced Mitchell into a tough step-back three-point jumper with under 10 seconds remaining, leading to an Alperen Şengün rebound. Cleveland center Jarrett Allen committed a foul with just four seconds left on the clock which led to Şengün heading to the free throw line.

Şengün proceeded to hit both free throws. Forward Tari Eason then made a fatal mistake, committing a flagrant foul on Garland on a three-point attempt.

Garland, a 90% free throw shooter, went just 1-of-3 from the line, which forced a tough game-winning attempt from Mitchell. The shot clanked off the rim, leading to a 109-108 win for Houston.

VanVleet led the way for the Rockets with 26 points on 8-of-15 shooting.

Houston will look to ride this momentum into Saturday where it will face Cleveland once again, but this time on the road.

Want to join the discussion? Like Rockets on SI Facebook and follow us on Twitter to stay up to date on all the latest Rockets news. You can also meet the team behind the coverage.

The Houston Rockets pulled off a thrilling 109-108 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers, thanks to a stellar performance from guard Fred VanVleet. VanVleet led the way for the Rockets with 26 points, including some clutch baskets down the stretch to secure the win.

The game was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams trading leads throughout the game. However, VanVleet’s scoring outburst in the fourth quarter proved to be the difference maker for the Rockets.

In addition to VanVleet’s scoring, the Rockets also got solid contributions from their supporting cast. Jalen Green added 18 points, while Christian Wood chipped in with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

The Cavaliers put up a valiant effort, with Collin Sexton leading the way with 24 points. However, it wasn’t enough to overcome the hot shooting of VanVleet and the Rockets.

With the win, the Rockets improve to 3-1 on the season and continue to show promise early in the year. As for the Cavaliers, they fall to 1-3 but showed they can compete with some of the top teams in the league.

Overall, it was an exciting game that came down to the wire, but in the end, it was the Rockets who came out on top behind VanVleet’s impressive performance.

  • Fred Warner cautiously optimistic 49ers can rebound in 2025 NFL season – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

The 49ers had a disappointing 2024 NFL season, but Fred Warner is confident San Francisco’s experience with adversity will assist the team’s efforts to rally for a bounce-back campaign in 2025.

The All-Pro linebacker detailed how past examples of the 49ers’ resiliency on the heels of a down season can serve as the perfect motivational tool to return San Francisco back to prominence after a last-place finish in 2024.

“There is a couple things I would say. One, obviously, in the past, we’ve had down seasons. 2018, my rookie year was not a good year, but then we all go on to play a Super Bowl the following year. 2020, another down year, a lot of injuries, and we go back to the NFC Championship Game,” Warner said on a recent episode of “The Warner House” podcast. “So I say that as the first part to say that is encouraging to know that it’s been done before, but I say that with an asterisk next to it, because the last thing that you can do, or last thing that you want to do, is say to yourself, ‘Oh, we’ve done it before. We’ll do it again.’

“You can’t go about it that way, because if you look back at those moments, especially the one I think of is in 2021 we started that season after having a losing year in 2020, we started 2021 3-5. And I remember that feeling of going into Chicago, where, if we lose that next game, we’re 3-6.

“You want to talk about some heat on that derriere? That’s it. So anyway, the whole point I’m trying to make is, yeah, even though it’s been done before, it’s going to take even more of an effort, even more of everything to say you have a chance at getting back to the 49er standard like we talked about. So it’s going to be, to be quite frank, it’s going to be miserable. And that’s exactly how you want it.”

The 49ers have made a habit of bouncing back strong after 10-plus-loss seasons, reaching at least the NFC Championship Game the year following such campaigns the last three times it has happened during coach Kyle Shanahan’s tenure.

Despite the lack of team success, Warner still posted an impressive 2024 season, earning First-Team All-Pro honors for the fourth time in his seven-year NFL career — an even more impressive feat considering Warner played with a fractured ankle for a majority of the 2024 season.

The 49ers begin a pivotal offseason with hopes of reloading for a deep playoff run in 2025, armed with the No. 11 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft as San Francisco seeks to add difference makers around Warner and the rest of its veteran core.

One thing is for certain, the established leaders on the team know what it takes to rebound from a down year. Whether or not they will be successful in doing so this time around remains to be seen.

Download and follow the 49ers Talk Podcast

The San Francisco 49ers had a rough 2024 NFL season, finishing with a disappointing 6-11 record. However, star linebacker Fred Warner remains cautiously optimistic about the team’s chances in the upcoming 2025 season.

In an interview with NBC Sports Bay Area & California, Warner expressed confidence in the 49ers’ talent and potential for a rebound. Despite the challenges they faced last season, Warner believes that the team has the ability to turn things around and compete at a high level.

With a new coaching staff in place and key players returning from injury, Warner sees the 49ers as a team on the rise. He emphasized the importance of staying focused and working hard to improve in all areas, both on and off the field.

While acknowledging that the NFL is a highly competitive league, Warner remains optimistic about the 49ers’ chances in the upcoming season. He believes that with the right mindset and dedication, they can overcome their past struggles and make a strong push for the playoffs.

As the 49ers prepare for the 2025 NFL season, Fred Warner’s cautious optimism serves as a reminder that anything is possible in football. With hard work and determination, the team has the potential to surprise their critics and achieve great success on the gridiron.

Fred Warner had some standout moments, like forcing a fumble in Week 1 and scoring a touchdown after an interception in Week 4. However, injuries and setbacks kept the team from making the playoffs and ended their streak for the first time since 2020.

Fred Warner’s wife Sydney grew nostalgic about 2024 on Day 1 of 2025

Although the 49ers had a subpar season, for Fred Warner and his wife, Sydney, last year was memorable. The couple welcomed their firstborn son, Beau Anthony, in March 2024.

Posting on Instagram, Sydney shared a collage which pretty much summed up what her life looked like last year.

“We have been blessed with a beautiful new life, new perspectives, new outlooks and new opportunities. And by the grace of God we are blessed with another year to do good things. 2 Corinthians 5:17 – Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. Happy New Year guys,” read the caption of the IG Post.

In one photo, Fred and Sydney are outside with Fred holding her baby bump while displaying a prenatal ultrasound scan. Another picture shows Sydney in a hospital gown, flaunting her baby bump.

The third picture showed baby Beau being held up against the sunlight. While another photo, beautifully captured Fred and Sydney enjoying time outdoors with a grazing horse in the background.

Mr. and Mrs. Warner first announced the news of the pregnancy in October 2023.
