The family of four were among more than 180 residents of kibbutz Nir Oz, a farming community in southern Israel, who were killed or abducted in the Oct. 7 attack. Since then, the family became the faces of a national trauma that sparked a fierce Israeli war in Gaza aimed at eradicating Hamas, an onslaught that has killed more than 47,000 Palestinians, according to Gaza health officials, who do not distinguish between combatants and civilians.
More than 1,750 people in Israel have been killed in the war, about 1,200 of them on the day of the Oct. 7 attack, according to Israeli officials. The toll includes more than 890 members of the Israeli military forces.
Throughout more than a year of waiting, hostage families and their supporters have carried orange balloons and worn orange shirts in honor of the missing children and their ginger-colored hair. They have held large events to mark the first two birthdays of Kfir, who has never celebrated one out of captivity.
All other children seized in the Oct. 7 attack were released in a previous cease-fire deal.
Israeli officials pressed Hamas negotiators in recent days for more clarity on Ms. Bibas and her children, according to Israeli media. As a female civilian with children, they were expected to be released in the initial stages of the cease-fire deal, before soldiers or men, if they were alive.
Mr. Bibas was abducted separately from his family.
In the early morning hours before his capture, he texted his sister, Ofri Bibas-Levy, to tell her about incoming rocket fire, according to an interview she gave to Kan, the Israeli public broadcaster. Later, he texted her that militants had entered the camp. He had a gun, he told her, but the militants had automatic rifles.
He then described scenes of clashes on the kibbutz and his fear that his two young sons would not be able to keep quiet.
“It feels like the end,” he wrote her at 9:10 in the morning.
Video from the Oct. 7 attack on Nir Oz revealed images of militants drilling open the Bibas family’s front door.
Sometime before her brother was captured, Ms. Bibas-Levy told Kan, he texted her and their parents that he loved them. At 9:45 in the morning, he wrote: “They’re in.”
Ms. Bibas-Levy told Kan that the first she learned of her brother’s Oct. 7 kidnapping when she saw a video of militants abducting him a few days later.
In a surprising turn of events, Hamas has announced that they will be releasing Israeli father Yarden Bibas, whose family was taken hostage by the militant group. This news comes after weeks of intense negotiations between Hamas and Israeli authorities, and is seen as a positive step towards de-escalating tensions in the region.
Yarden Bibas, a devoted father of three, was abducted by Hamas militants while visiting a relative in Gaza. His wife and children were also taken captive, sparking outrage and condemnation from both Israeli and international leaders. The Bibas family’s ordeal has been a harrowing one, with reports of mistreatment and threats of violence against them.
However, in a statement released today, Hamas officials have confirmed that they will be releasing Yarden Bibas and his family as a gesture of goodwill towards Israel. This development has been met with cautious optimism by Israeli officials, who have expressed hope that this could be the first step towards a broader peace agreement in the region.
The release of Yarden Bibas is a testament to the power of diplomacy and negotiation in resolving conflicts. It is a reminder that even in the midst of great adversity, there is always room for dialogue and compromise. As we await Yarden Bibas’ safe return to his loved ones, let us continue to work towards a peaceful and just resolution to the longstanding conflict between Israel and Palestine.

The Dallas Cowboys have a long list of unrestricted free agents who will officially hit the open market in a little less than two months. Of those, six or seven were significant contributors in 2024, meaning the Cowboys have some difficult decisions ahead of them in the coming weeks.
Today’s free agent profile series examines a player who wasn’t one of those significant contributors because he barely saw the field last season. That would be quarterback Trey Lance.
Year Review: Trey Lance’s 2024 season with the Dallas Cowboys was characterized by limited opportunities and mixed performances. The 24-year-old quarterback, who the Cowboys acquired in August of 2023, spent nearly the entirety of the regular season as Dallas’ third-string quarterback.
Even when Dak Prescott went down with a season-ending injury in Week 9, Dallas refused to elevate Lance to the starting lineup, leaving him cemented behind Cooper Rush as their clear backup. Lance got some brief playing time during a blowout loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 10, but after that, he did not see the field for more than one snap until the final week of the regular season.
Dallas gave Lance a chance to start their regular-season finale against the Commanders, and the results were not pretty. The former first-round pick completed just 20 of his 34 passes for 244 yards and consistently struggled to hit open receivers. Lance’s performance made it clear that he currently does not possess the accuracy to become a stating-caliber quarterback at the NFL level.
The decision to trade for Lance has always been a head-scratching move, but not playing him in a lost season until the year’s final game may be even more confusing. Dallas had a golden opportunity to give Lance three or four starts down the stretch to see what he could do in an extended playing period. Instead, they waited until the final week of the year and threw Lance to the fire without their best offensive weapon in CeeDee Lamb.
Regardless, Lance did not take advantage of the opportunity and capped off a very tumultuous season with his poor showing against the Commanders.
Free Agency Outlook: The Cowboys declined Lance’s fifth-year option before the start of the regular season, so he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in March.
Given Lance’s lack of playing time, it’s hard to project what the quarterback’s market will look like this spring. With so much inexperience and on-field struggles when he did get a chance to play, it’s not likely a team is willing to give Lance a multi-year contract. The 24-year-old will likely have to sign a one-year deal to hopefully serve as a team’s backup next season.
Even with all the negatives going against him, there could still be some teams that are infatuated with Lance’s potential. His mobility and athleticism could be an intriguing trait to an organization that believes they could fix his accuracy issues.
Last offseason, we saw 23 quarterbacks sign free-agent deals. Despite Lance’s struggles, there will always be a demand for good quarterback play, and teams will always be willing to give players a second chance. Last spring, Mason Rudolph and Carson Wentz signed one-year deals worth $2.8M and $3.2M, respectively. This is likely a good benchmark for where Lance could end up AAV-wise on a potential one-year deal.
Cowboys Verdict: When the Cowboys traded for Trey Lance back in August 2023, the move made little to no sense. Today, the same thing rings true, and his time in Dallas has almost certainly come to an end.
With all Dallas’ other needs to address this offseason, it’s hard to see them allocating even a small amount of cap space to bring back Lance and have him serve as their backup or third-string quarterback. To make a Lance return even more unlikely, Dallas’ long-time backup quarterback, Cooper Rush, is also a free agent this offseason.
Unless a team gives Rush a deal to let him compete for a starting spot, there’s virtually zero chance Dallas would choose to bring Lance back over the veteran. While Rush has not lit the world on fire when he filled in as the starter, he has won some games, and right or wrong, the organization has plenty of faith in his ability to steady the ship if Dak Prescott is to go down again.
Overall, Trey Lance’s tenure as a Dallas Cowboy will end with more questions than answers, as the former first-round pick will search for his next opportunity this March.
Prediction: Trey Lance signs a one-year, $2.5M deal with the New York Jets
As the Dallas Cowboys head into the 2025 offseason, one of the biggest decisions they will have to make is what to do with quarterback Trey Lance, who is set to become a free agent. Lance, who was drafted by the Cowboys in the first round of the 2021 NFL Draft, has shown flashes of brilliance during his time in Dallas, but has also struggled with inconsistency.
At just 24 years old, Lance still has plenty of potential and could develop into a franchise quarterback for the Cowboys. However, with his contract set to expire, the team will have to decide whether or not to commit to him long-term.
Prediction:
It is likely that the Cowboys will look to re-sign Lance, as they have invested a lot in his development and see him as a key piece of their future. With a strong supporting cast of offensive weapons and a solid offensive line, Lance has the tools he needs to succeed in Dallas.
Ultimately, I predict that the Cowboys will offer Lance a lucrative contract extension, keeping him in Dallas for the foreseeable future. With the right coaching and support, Lance could develop into one of the top quarterbacks in the league and lead the Cowboys to success in the years to come.
Before the Jim Harbaugh era really kicked off, the Los Angeles Chargers weren’t exactly happy with the situation behind quarterback Justin Herbert on the depth chart and traded for Taylor Heinicke.
One year later, might Harbaugh and the Chargers go to free agency and sign a former top-five pick?
That’s the prediction from CBS Sports’ Cody Benjamin, who played quarterback matchmaker and suggested the Chargers sign Trey Lance: “Jim Harbaugh has his man in Justin Herbert, but he and offensive coordinator Greg Roman also love to run, which Lance can do. The ex-49ers first-rounder could make for an enticing gadget-type prospect.”
Lance, the third overall pick in 2021, had a combination of things preventing him from getting on the field with the San Francisco 49ers before he was eventually traded to Dallas in exchange for a fourth-round pick. There, he did little with limited chances and had his fifth-year option declined, sending him to free agency this offseason.
It is hard to know if Harbaugh and coordinator Greg Roman would really take the time to implement gadget packages so that a possible third-string quarterback can add a new wrinkle to the offense.
No matter what Harbaugh’s past has shown with the quarterback position, he’s not likely to want the ball in anyone but Herbert’s hands — especially when the franchise passer showed so much as a runner this year when he wasn’t battling different ankle injuries, anyway.
Regardless, it would be hard to blame them for looking at a 24-year-old former top-three pick at any position, let alone the most important of all.
The Los Angeles Chargers are making big moves in free agency this offseason, and their latest target is a former Top 3 pick. Rumors are swirling that the Chargers are chasing after a high-profile player who was once considered one of the top prospects in the NFL.
With the Chargers looking to bolster their roster and make a serious run at the playoffs next season, this potential signing could be a game-changer for the team. Fans are buzzing with excitement at the prospect of adding such a talented player to their lineup.
While the identity of the former Top 3 pick remains a mystery, speculation is running rampant among Chargers fans and analysts alike. Could it be a star quarterback, a dominant pass rusher, or a shutdown cornerback? Only time will tell, but one thing is for sure – the Chargers are not holding back when it comes to pursuing top-tier talent in free agency.
Stay tuned for more updates on the Chargers’ pursuit of this former Top 3 pick and what it could mean for the team’s chances next season. This could be the move that propels the Chargers to new heights in the NFL.
