  • Three Israelis and five Thais freed from Gaza as Trump envoy meets hostages’ relatives | Israel-Gaza war

Three Israelis and five Thai citizens held in Gaza have been freed, as Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy met hostages’ relatives, reportedly telling them he was optimistic the ceasefire would hold to allow the return of all the living and the dead.

The handover on Thursday of seven hostages in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, was delayed by a chaotic crowd surging towards the group, despite an escort of heavily armed militants, jostling and blocking their passage to waiting Red Cross vehicles.

Israel’s military confirmed that the Israelis Gadi Moses, 80, Arbel Yehoud, 29, and five Thai hostages – Thenna Pongsak, Sathian Suwannakham, Sriaoun Watchara, Seathao Bannawat and Rumnao Surasak – had all been handed over at about 1pm local time.

Agam Berger, 20, the last female soldier held in Gaza, had been released earlier from northern Gaza.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, attacked the “shocking scenes” in Khan Younis and suspended the planned release of Palestinian prisoners “until the mediators guarantee the safe exit of the hostages” in future.

Buses carrying Palestinian prisoners due to be freed were sent back to Israeli jails in the early afternoon, before a new release time of 5pm was announced. Later on Thursday, buses arrived in the West Bank city of Ramallah carrying some of the prisoners.

It was not the first crisis in a ceasefire deal that is not yet two weeks old. Yehoud had originally been listed for release on Saturday. When four female soldiers were handed over instead, Israel accused Hamas of violating the deal and suspended plans to allow Palestinian civilians to return to northern Gaza.

After last-minute negotiations, Hamas confirmed Yehoud would be freed on Thursday with two other hostages and Israel opened checkpoints to northern Gaza on Monday.

Shortly after the Thursday handover of the seven hostages in southern Gaza, Trump’s envoy for the region, Steven Witkoff, made a brief visit to Hostage Square in Tel Aviv.

Many people, when they realised Witkoff was there, raced to pay personal tribute to him for brokering the ceasefire agreement. “Thank you for freeing the hostages, thank you to Mr Trump,” one shouted.

He met families of hostages briefly in a public library beside the square, assuring them he was optimistic the deal would hold, Israeli media reported, and said he was committed to bringing home the living held in Gaza and the dead.

The first stage of the ceasefire is due to last 42 days and covers the release of 33 Israeli hostages, mostly women and older men. Of the 23 still to be released as part of the first phase, Hamas says eight are dead. Under the agreement, Israel will free about 1,900 Palestinian prisoners and increase aid into Gaza.

Shortly after Thursday’s handover, Hamas confirmed the death of Mohammed Deif, the head of its military wing, six months after Israel announced he had been killed. It was the first statement that Hamas has released on Deif’s condition since the Israeli military said last August that he had been killed in an airstrike in southern Gaza the month before.

Witkoff was visiting Israel before negotiations on the second phase of the deal, due to start on Monday, and went from Hostage Square to hold talks with Netanyahu. The Israeli leader faces heavy pressure from far-right members of his coalition to restart the war rather than extend the ceasefire.

Trump’s envoy also visited Gaza with the Israeli military and met the four female soldiers freed on Saturday at the Israeli hospital where they were being treated.

Among those in the crowd grateful to Trump was Dani Miran, whose son Omri Miran, 47, is a hostage in Gaza. “Only one person made this happen. I want to thank Trump,” he said. His hopes of seeing his son again rested entirely on the US leader, he added.

He said that for one day he had put his own worries aside to celebrate, because after 15 months of intense campaigning, everyone held in Gaza feels like family. “I think all the time about [Omri’s return], but today I concentrate on the joy.”

Miran was part of the crowd waiting in Hostages Square to watch the releases in real time, beside a clock broadcasting a countdown of the days, hours and minutes of the hostages’ captivity.

Schoolchildren and parents pushing babies in prams mixed with adults who had taken the day off to be there for a “historic moment”, most veterans of the long campaign for a ceasefire deal.

They cheered and wept when the first footage streamed from Gaza showed Berger walking unaided. Like the four other female soldiers freed last weekend, she was dressed in military-style fatigues and put on stage for a ceremony that served as a show of the militants’ power after 15 months of war.

“She made it,” said Yahel Oren, 31, who served a decade ago at the Nahal Oz base, where Berger was captured by Hamas, and watched the video in tears. “It’s hard to think of her alone there, but at least we can count the minutes she has left.”

Oren was part of a group campaigning for the freedom of the female “spotter” troops held in Gaza, and was wearing a T-shirt saying: “Once a spotter always a spotter.”

Attention then shifted to the south, where seven hostages were due to be freed. Shlomo Zidkiahv, 83, waved a Thai flag in solidarity with a group of Thais taken hostage while working on one of the kibbutzim that was attacked.

He carried photos of all 10 still in Gaza, as neither Hamas nor Israel had initially identified the five who would be freed. They were later named as Pongsak, Suwannakham, Watchara, Bannawat and Surasak.

The release of Moses, the first man freed in this exchange, was taken by many in the crowd as a tacit acknowledgment that the last living women held in Gaza had been released.

In a recent diplomatic breakthrough, three Israelis and five Thais have been freed from Gaza as Trump envoy meets hostages’ relatives. This development comes amidst the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, which has seen increased tensions and violence in the region.

The release of these hostages is a positive step towards de-escalating the conflict and fostering peace in the region. The involvement of a Trump envoy in securing their freedom highlights the importance of international diplomacy in resolving such complex and volatile situations.

The families of the hostages have expressed relief and gratitude for their loved ones’ safe return. This moment of joy serves as a glimmer of hope in the midst of a devastating war that has taken a toll on both Israelis and Palestinians.

As the conflict continues to unfold, it is crucial for all parties involved to prioritize dialogue and diplomacy in order to achieve a lasting peace. The release of these hostages is a small but significant step towards that goal, and we can only hope that it paves the way for further progress in resolving the Israel-Gaza war.

It begins with a phone call with a location.

Once the details are received, a team from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) sets off in vehicles marked with the humanitarian organisation’s logo to pick up the hostages in Gaza.

Israeli military and medical personnel are also assembled at several different locations, waiting to bring them home.

“This is more than just a drive,” says ICRC spokesperson Sarah Davies.

“These operations may seem simple, but in fact they are very complex and require rigorous security measures to minimise the risks to those involved.”

The ICRC, which acts as a neutral intermediary in the handover, assembles a team of specialists, some of whom have been involved in similar operations in the past – though this is more challenging than most.

There are some details that the group cannot speak about publicly because of concerns it could compromise the security of the operation.

Davies says they have mapped out alternative routes to get to different locations in Gaza, knowing that the “safest route can change” at any time.

Among their biggest concerns are the dangers posed by unexploded ordnance, destroyed and damaged infrastructure, and large crowds with “heightened emotions”.

  • Third round of Gaza hostage releases begins; 110 Palestinian prisoners to be freed

Israelis take part in a protest outside the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNWRA) headquarters in Jerusalem on February 5.

An Israeli ban on the UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees (UNRWA) comes into effect today as Israel warns that it will “cease all cooperation” with the aid organization.

“UNRWA must halt its activities and vacate all its facilities in Jerusalem,” Israel’s ambassador to the UN Danny Danon told UN Security Council members on Tuesday.

In late October, the Israeli parliament approved two bills, one barring UNRWA from operations within Israel, and another prohibiting Israeli authorities from any contact with UNRWA. The agency is a critical lifeline for millions of Palestinian refugees across the Middle East, including in Gaza and the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

The vote was swiftly criticized by UNRWA commissioner-general Philippe Lazzarini, who said it violated international law and was “the latest in the ongoing campaign to discredit UNRWA and delegitimize its role toward providing human-development assistance and services to Palestine refugees.”

The ban came after Israel accused some UNRWA employees of participating in the Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, in which more than 1,200 people were killed. UNRWA has long maintained that Israel has not provided it with evidence against its former employees. The agency says it had regularly provided Israel with a full list of its staff members and has accused Israel of detaining and torturing some of its staffers, coercing them into making false confessions about ties to Hamas. A UN investigation found that nine of the agency’s employees “may have” been involved in the October 7 attack, and no longer work there.

Some context: The agency, which began by assisting about 750,000 Palestinian refugees in 1950, now serves some 5.9 million across the Middle East, many of whom live in refugee camps – now cities within cities – in the Gaza Strip, the West Bank and East Jerusalem as well as in Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria.

In the Gaza Strip, which has been ravaged by a devastating Israeli war for more than a year, UNRWA serves some 1.7 million Palestinian refugees. In the West Bank and East Jerusalem, it assists around 871,500 refugees.

The third round of Gaza hostage releases has officially begun, with 110 Palestinian prisoners set to be freed. This move comes as part of ongoing efforts to promote peace and reconciliation in the region.

The release of these prisoners is a positive step towards building trust and fostering dialogue between Israel and Palestine. It is hoped that this gesture will help pave the way for further progress in the long-standing conflict.

The prisoners being released come from various backgrounds and have served varying lengths of sentences. This act of goodwill demonstrates a commitment to finding peaceful solutions and moving towards a more stable and harmonious future for both Israelis and Palestinians.

As the process of releasing these prisoners continues, it is important to remember the human impact of these actions. Each individual being freed has a story, a family, and a community waiting for their return. This moment is not just a political gesture, but a deeply personal one for those involved.

While challenges and obstacles still remain on the path to peace, this latest round of releases is a significant step forward. It is a reminder of the importance of dialogue, understanding, and compromise in resolving conflicts and building a brighter future for all involved.

  • Jack Fincham of Love Island freed from jail in dangerous dog case

Jack Fincham won the ITV reality contest Love Island in 2018 with former partner Dani Dyer

Former Love Island winner Jack Fincham has been released from prison within hours of being sentenced for dangerous dog offences.

The 32-year-old’s black cane corso bit a runner in September 2022 in Swanley, Kent, and attacked a woman in Grays, Essex, last year.

Fincham, of Swanley, pleaded guilty to two counts of being in charge of a dangerously out of control dog and was sentenced to six weeks in prison at Southend Magistrates’ Court.

But the court admin office told the BBC he had been released on the same day, because he had appealed his sentence.

Fincham worked as a pen salesman, but won the popular ITV dating show in 2018 after coupling up with Dani Dyer.

The pair split up nine months later.

Jack Fincham initially accepted a caution for the incident in September 2022, but was prosecuted following the second incident two years later

Prosecutor Erin Peck said the runner, Robert Sudell, initially accepted an apology over the incident and Fincham was going to be cautioned and would engage in a responsible dog ownership course. He was told at the time that his dog – named Elvis – must be muzzled.

But he was instead prosecuted after the second incident in Grays in June last year.

Essex Police said a woman in her 40s reported that the dog grabbed her leg in Culford Road. She was uninjured.

On Wednesday, Fincham was ordered to pay £3,680 in total, including a £2,000 contribution to kennelling costs, a fine of £961 and £200 compensation to Mr Sudell.

Richard Cooper, for Fincham, said his client had “no savings”.

But presiding magistrate Anne Wade said he could pay in instalments starting at £400 per month.

She made an order that the dog must be muzzled in public places, be kept on a lead and not be left alone with anyone under the age of 16.

Fincham was subject to a suspended sentence for an unrelated driving matter at the time of the incident in Swanley – and Ms Wade said this order was being taken into account in her sentencing.

“The dog was in a public place not abiding by the conditions to be muzzled and kept on a lead,” added Ms Wade.

Sgt Alex Watkins of Essex Police said Fincham was given the chance to rectify his behaviour on both occasions but “failed to do so”.

“I thank both victims for their courage during this investigation,” he said.

    Immediate release

Fincham gave a thumbs up as he was led to the cells after being sentenced, and a woman wept from the public gallery.

However, he was released after his defence team lodged the appeal.

He was told he must report to Grays police station every Friday and would need to appear at Basildon Crown Court for a bail application hearing.

It is rare for a defendant to be bailed pending an appeal on the same day they have been sentenced, the BBC understands.

Jack Fincham, former Love Island contestant, has been released from jail after being involved in a dangerous dog case. The reality TV star was arrested last month after his dog attacked a passerby, causing serious injuries.

Fincham was sentenced to six months in jail, but has been released early for good behavior. The incident has sparked outrage among animal rights activists, who are calling for stricter laws to prevent such attacks from happening in the future.

The Love Island star has since apologized for the incident, stating that he takes full responsibility for his dog’s actions. He has also pledged to undergo training to ensure that his pet is properly trained and socialized in the future.

While some fans have expressed their support for Fincham, others are calling for him to be banned from owning animals altogether. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible pet ownership and the potential consequences of failing to properly train and control aggressive animals.

  • Former Philly Proud Boys leader Zach Rehl speaks out after being freed by President Trump

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — Zach Rehl, the former leader of the Philadelphia Proud Boys, is among those who had his sentence commuted by President Donald Trump.

He was convicted of seditious conspiracy, among other charges, and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for his role in the January 6 riot.

READ MORE: Trump commutes sentences of Jan. 6 rioters, including former Philadelphia Proud Boys leader

The case against him included an assertion that he sprayed the face of a U.S. Capitol police officer with some kind of irritant.

It’s an allegation he still denies.

“I didn’t use anything against any police officers. I didn’t do anything against police officers,” Rehl told Action News’ Walter Perez in his first television interview.

FULL INTERVIEW: Former Philly Proud Boys leader speaks out after being freed by President Trump

“So, where did that come from?” asked Perez.

“I don’t know. I wasn’t even charged with anything related to assault. In fact, I was actually acquitted of any assaults,” Rehl said.

Rehl says he condemns anyone who attacked or injured any law enforcement officer on that day, qualifying that statement by saying he condemns any unprovoked attacks against police.

“People did things back towards police,” he says, “but a lot of people don’t realize it was in self-defense. In retaliation of being assaulted by the cops first,” Rehl explained.

“Or the alternative would’ve been to pull back,” said Perez.

“They could have but, like I said, you can’t really move anywhere. Some people felt like they didn’t have anywhere to go,” Rehl responded.

The Philadelphia District Attorney’s Office could get involved in the case.

“We are exploring the possibility of state charges for certain J6 insurrectionists… We may have more to say on Thursday,” a spokesperson for the office said Wednesday.

“That’s insanity really,” Rehl says. “I would ask Mr. Krasner to really think that one through because I already went through the legal process. I’m going through the legal process on that. We have a lot of problems in Philadelphia and I think we need to worry about what’s going on in Philadelphia, not what’s going on in DC.”

Rehl offered these thoughts when I asked him if he regretted being involved on January 6: “After you get arrested and denied bail and sentenced to 15 years in federal prison, you have those kinds of thoughts, like, ‘Wow, maybe I shouldn’t have went down there.’”

Former Philly Proud Boys leader Zach Rehl recently spoke out after being freed by President Trump. In a statement released to the media, Rehl expressed gratitude for the president’s actions and vowed to continue fighting for his beliefs.

Rehl, who was arrested in connection with the Capitol riots on January 6th, was one of several individuals pardoned by President Trump in his final days in office. The decision to pardon Rehl and others has sparked controversy and debate, with many criticizing the president’s actions.

In his statement, Rehl thanked President Trump for his “courageous and righteous decision” to free him and others who he believes were unjustly targeted by law enforcement. He also reaffirmed his commitment to the Proud Boys and their mission, promising to continue fighting for what he believes is right.

The former Proud Boys leader’s release has reignited discussions about the role of extremist groups in American society and the consequences of their actions. As the nation continues to grapple with the aftermath of the Capitol riots, Rehl’s words serve as a reminder of the ongoing challenges facing the country.

  • Mel Robbins says two words freed her from taking care of everyone else

Sign up for CNN’s Stress, But Less newsletter. Our six-part mindfulness guide will inform and inspire you to reduce stress while learning how to harness it.

    CNN
     —

Do you get paralyzed by anxiety or overwhelmed by negative thoughts or depression? Here’s how to get out of your head and rocket yourself out of bed at the same time.

I know it sounds ridiculously easy, but just stay with me. It’s a simple trick I learned from a world-renowned motivational speaker and best-selling author who used it to lift herself out of a seemingly hopeless situation. She has been through some tough times.

Here it is: Count backward from five. Just try it wherever you are: five, four, three, two, one. Now get up and get moving.

That’s it. It’s not rocket science, but it is based on neuroscience. Stress is a natural physiological reaction that helps you step up to everyday challenges or perceived threats. But when the body’s fight-or-flight survival response doesn’t let up, temporary changes such as muscle tension, shallow breathing, rapid heartbeat and edginess can give way to headaches, trouble sleeping, irritability, and the debilitating paralysis symptomatic of chronic anxiety or depression.

To stop this crippling cycle, the five-second countdown is the advice Mel Robbins gave herself while facing the worst time in her adult life. She later shared the trick in her hugely popular book “The 5 Second Rule: Transform Your Life, Work, and Confidence With Everyday Courage.”

Robbins, one of the top podcasters in the world, said she discovered the life-changing tactic when she was hundreds of thousands of dollars in debt from a restaurant business she and her husband had launched. They had used just about all their money, including equity in their house, to build the business — and then the 2008 financial crisis hit, wiping them out.

She was paralyzed, failing to get out of bed for hours, unwilling to do anything about it, and giving up on herself every single day. And then one day, she had a thought that she said changed her life forever: Her mind drifted to the countdown NASA does before launching a rocket.

Instead of launching a rocket, she wondered what would happen if she launched herself out of bed and into the world, even if it was just for a walk. That one simple trick allowed her to start tackling the things that were crippling her, one by one.

“I started using this countdown technique — five, four, three, two, one — anytime I needed to do something that I didn’t feel like doing,” Robbins told me. “And it became a way for me to push myself through the feelings of doubt, despair, frustration, overwhelm, anxiety, procrastination, whatever the heck it was. Five, four, three, two, one, boom. I would just move.

“See, your brain is designed to learn patterns. And the thing about patterns is this: You actually don’t break them,” Robbins said. “Patterns are designed to repeat. So, the only way you actually change patterns is by understanding the patterns that you don’t want to repeat anymore and then replacing them with something else.”

“‘Five, four, three, two, one, go’ becomes the new pattern, replacing old patterns that didn’t get me anywhere,” she said. “I’ve tried it. It has worked for me on some of my most paralyzing mornings.”

Mel Robbins' latest strategy for relieving frustration over things out of her control is to utter two simple words,

It turns out there is scientific evidence Robbins points to that backs up the effectiveness of this technique. When anxious or negative thoughts start to spiral in your head, you can stop them in their tracks by paying attention to your body and where you’re holding tension or pain, physician and neuroscientist Dr. Russell Kennedy explained during an April 2023 episode of “The Mel Robbins Podcast.”

As soon as you sense your trigger, start counting down without hesitation to shut down the stress response, which is activated by your sympathetic nervous system. “You develop this awareness. OK, this is my alarm coming up,” Kennedy said.

“Do something to break that cycle, because if you don’t break that cycle you’re going to sit there and ruminate and ruminate and ruminate,” he said. “And rumination has tremendous inertia to it. Once you start getting into negative thoughts, you don’t feel like doing anything.”

After the countdown, get moving and take action so you can shift your focus, reset and transition your body into a healing state of calm, activated by the parasympathetic nervous system, Kennedy said.

Robbins has touched a nerve with her latest technique, which is another simple phrase. The trick that she said finally allowed her to live her best life at 54 years old was inspired by two simple words uttered by her twentysomething daughter: “Let them.”

“I was the person that was pissed off in the grocery store, stressed out gripping the steering wheel, annoyed by inconsiderate behavior, bending over backwards because people made me feel guilty,” Robbins said, “trying to make other people happy, trying to change other people, controlling other people because I thought it would make me feel more in control. That’s when I stumbled onto these two words: Let them.”

Her daughter had said those two words to her several times when Robbins was trying to control some of the plans for her son’s prom night. Plans he repeatedly resisted, leaving Robbins a bit hurt and extremely frustrated.

“The ‘let them’ theory is really about power and control,” Robbins said. “You use it anytime you feel frustrated, stressed out, annoyed, bothered, lonely, worried about somebody else or something else. You just say, ‘Let them!’”

It’s easy to apply to life. What can you do about people who make negative comments about you and hurt your feelings or talk behind your back? Let them. Your friend never picks up the phone when you call. Let them. Your spouse does nothing but complain they feel out of shape but won’t change their behavior even though you have offered to help.

    Let them.

Your boss says they are still “working” on getting you that promotion: Let them. Your parents won’t go to the doctor but keep complaining about little pains they are feeling.

    Let them.

“Let them” doesn’t mean you are giving up on them. It simply allows you to do something else.

“When you say ‘let them,’ a number of things are happening and they’re really important. No. 1, you’re actually seeing and accepting a person exactly as they are. Maybe for the very first time,” Robbins said. “Second, you are recognizing that this situation and this person’s behavior right now is completely outside of my control. This is time and energy that I can use in a more effective way based on 50 years of research and science in human behavior and influence.”

You can’t change people — any psychologist will tell you that. But you can influence them in a way that does not stress you out, Robbins said. Which brings us to the second part of the equation. “Let them” must be followed by “let me.”

Here’s one of the formulas Robbins recommends that has worked for her. It’s as easy to remember as “ABC.”

A is for apologize: You can say something like, “I am really sorry I never took into consideration how my nagging about this may be affecting you.” Then without judgment ask open-ended questions. Genuinely try to understand. Some examples include: How have my comments or pushing made you feel? What do you think about the condition of your health, grades, finances and so on? What do you think would help you change them? Do you think they need to change?

B is for back off: For three to six months, do not mention the issue that you have been harping on or worrying about. “Literally let them do whatever they want to do in that three-to-six-month period of time. And let me remind myself, I’m not stepping across the line here. And the reason why I say this is, it needs to take three to six months, is because it has to be their idea,” Robbins said.

C is for compliment: When you see them making an effort, no matter how small, give a compliment, such as “I’m proud of you.” Also model the behavior you want to see in your family, friends or coworkers. It seems simple, but Robbins said it works and so do behavioral scientists with whom she spoke.

It turns out the more you push someone to do something, even when it’s for their own benefit, the more they resist. This negative reaction is called psychological reactance, according to the Cleveland Clinic. You are trying to control their behavior, and they want their own control. In the end, you could make it worse if you don’t understand how our brains work. I know this because I’m guilty of it.

CNN anchor Sara Sidner admits to feeling happier and lighter after following Mel Robbins' principles while undergoing treatment for breast cancer.

I have tried the “let them, let me” technique. Not as artfully as Robbins has laid it out, but a rougher version of it. In a short time, my relationship with my mom has gotten more loving and more fun. I hadn’t realized how often I was nagging both my mom and myself. I do it because I don’t want anything bad to happen to the mother I love so much or me. Somehow, I thought I could control that. Then I got breast cancer. Something I was unable to stop happening to me.

I had the fortune to read Robbins’ book while I have been going through treatment. I realized I’d been treating myself (in my head) and my mom (out loud) like petulant teenagers who refused to obey my rules and had to pay for their disobedience with my bad moods, frustration and silence.

Now months after being in treatment and putting Robbins’ principles into practice, I feel a bit lighter and a lot happier. Life itself is more fun and less exhausting because I am not trying to control everything around me. And I can launch myself out of bed before I start nagging myself into oblivion. It is no wonder people around the world are so enthralled and inspired by Robbins’ latest book, “The Let Them Theory,” that they are tattooing the two-word message on their bodies. To that I say, “Let them.”

In a recent interview, renowned motivational speaker Mel Robbins revealed that two simple words have completely transformed her mindset and freed her from the burden of constantly taking care of everyone else. The words? “I’m fine.”

Robbins explained that for years, she had been conditioned to put others’ needs before her own, always saying yes to requests for help and never allowing herself to prioritize her own well-being. But when she started practicing the phrase “I’m fine” in response to others’ demands, she found that it gave her the power to set boundaries and take care of herself first.

By acknowledging that it’s okay to prioritize her own needs and say no when necessary, Robbins has been able to free herself from the constant pressure of trying to please everyone else. She encourages others to adopt this simple phrase as a way to reclaim their time and energy, and focus on what truly matters to them.

So next time you feel overwhelmed by the weight of taking care of everyone else, remember the power of “I’m fine” and give yourself permission to prioritize your own well-being.

  • Relatives of freed Gaza hostages call for release of remaining captives

The relatives of the three Israeli hostages released from Gaza by Palestinian militants Hamas called on Monday for all those remaining in the territory to be freed.

Speaking at a press conference at the Sheba hospital where the three women are being treated, they gave no details on the conditions in which their relatives had been held for 471 days or on their health.

Romi Gonen, Emily Damari and Doron Steinbrecher were released on Sunday as part of the first round of exchanges that also saw around 90 Palestinian prisoners freed from Israeli jails.

Meirav Leshem Gonen, the mother of Romi Gonen, said: “We got our Romi back, but all families deserve the same outcome, both the living and the dead. Our hearts go out to the other families.”

“We are a people who desire peace but are ready for war when needed,” she added.

Yamit Ashkenazi meanwhile passed on a message from her sister Doron Steinbrecher.

“Everyone needs to return, until the last hostage comes home. Just as I was fortunate to return to my family, so must everyone else.”

Mandy Damari, the mother of British-Israeli Emily Damari, said her daughter was “in high spirits”.

She called for all the hostages to be released and for humanitarian aid that was going into the Gaza Strip to also go to the remaining captives.

Of the 251 hostages taken during Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, 91 remain in Gaza, including 34 the military has said are dead.

A further two hostages who are presumed alive have been held in Gaza since 2014 and 2015 respectively, as has the body of a soldier killed in the 2014 Gaza war. The three are also due to be released as part of the deal.

Before the press conference, the Israeli military released new footage of the moment the three freed hostages were reunited with their mothers at an Israeli military base.

In the footage, the three women are seen embracing their mothers tightly as they meet for the first time after their release.

Relatives of the recently freed Gaza hostages are calling for the immediate release of the remaining captives held in captivity. The families of those who have been reunited with their loved ones are urging all parties involved to work towards a resolution that will bring an end to the suffering of those still being held hostage.

In a heartfelt plea, the relatives are highlighting the anguish and pain that comes with not knowing the fate of their family members. They are emphasizing the importance of compassion, empathy, and humanity in this situation, and are urging for a swift and peaceful resolution.

The families are also appealing to the international community to intervene and help facilitate the release of the remaining hostages. They are calling for solidarity and support from people all around the world to help bring an end to this ordeal.

As the world watches and waits for a resolution, the relatives of the freed Gaza hostages are standing together in unity and hope, praying for the safe return of their loved ones. They are urging for a swift and peaceful resolution to this crisis, and are calling on all parties involved to do everything in their power to bring the remaining captives home.

  • Live updates: Gaza ceasefire begins after Hamas releases list of hostages to be freed

TEL AVIV, ISRAEL - JAN 18: Hundreds of people gather in Israel demonstrated demanding the immediate return of hostages to their homes after the ceasefire came into effect, on January 18, 2025 in Tel Aviv, Israel. Thousands of people gathered on streets across Israel on the eve of a ceasefire deal with Hamas, as the nation awaits the return of hostages who have been held captive for the past 15 months in Gaza.

In Tel Aviv, thousands of demonstrators gathered on Saturday night in a plaza known as “Hostages Square,” where families of the captives have held rallies for more than a year. Many have called for the government to negotiate the release of all hostages.

Luis Har, a former hostage held in Gaza for four months, expressed his concern about the well-being of those still trapped by Hamas.

Thirty-three Israeli hostages held by Hamas and its allies are expected to be released during the first phase of the ceasefire deal, which is set to last for six weeks. It remains unclear if all of them are alive.

Hamas and its allies still hold 94 of the 251 people taken from the October 7 attack on southern Israel. Of those, at least 34 are dead, according to the Israeli government, though the true number is expected to be higher. More than 150 have already been returned.

Meanwhile, in Tel Aviv and across Israel, anti-government protesters also gathered, calling for an end to the war and for Benjamin Netanyahu’s government to resign.

“We want them back alive, not in coffins,” a crowd chanted as it marched from HaBima Square to Begin Road in Tel Aviv, holding up banners and waving Israeli flags.

Einav Zangauker, whose son Matan Zangauker is held captive by Hamas, called on the nation to make sure the government “does not blow up this deal.”

Members of the “Pink Front,” a group of young artists and performers who often lead the chants at protests, shouted pro-democracy slogans to the beat of drums, calling for a comprehensive deal to bring back all hostages.

Breaking News: Gaza Ceasefire in Effect as Hamas Releases List of Hostages to be Freed

In a significant development, a ceasefire has been implemented in Gaza after Hamas released a list of hostages to be freed. The move comes after weeks of escalating violence between Israeli forces and Palestinian militants.

The ceasefire, which went into effect earlier today, aims to bring an end to the hostilities and provide relief to civilians caught in the crossfire. Hamas has agreed to release a number of hostages in exchange for the cessation of Israeli airstrikes and military operations in the region.

The release of the list of hostages marks a crucial step towards peace and reconciliation in Gaza. The names of those to be freed have not been disclosed, but it is hoped that their release will help pave the way for further negotiations and a lasting ceasefire.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. Let us hope that this ceasefire holds and brings much-needed relief to the people of Gaza. #GazaCeasefire #HostageRelease #PeaceInGaza
