  • Cooler weather has local businesses and residents bracing for Freeze Warning

People are bundled up in the morning and at night, but for the most part they’re enjoying the weather during the day.

On the corner of 6th Avenue and Adams you’ll find the Corner Spot.

Keivin Landazuri is the owner and he says no matter how cold it gets, this is where he’ll be during mornings and afternoons.

Cold weather not scaring business owner

    Local perspective:

“Sales do go down, people tend to not come out but the cold doesn’t tend to affect me when I’m working. It’s always nicer to be cold than working in 100 degree weather,” said Landazuri.

Whether you’re working outside or simply taking your dog to the park, it’s impossible to ignore the cooler temps.

    Customers shared their thoughts.

    What they’re saying:

“I was not warm enough this morning. I was just in this sweater and a jacket. I wish I had a hat, scarf and warmer leggings on. It was chilly.”

“I haven’t pulled out the parka yet though. I’m just not there but if we get any colder I might have to do that.”

“I was expecting it to be a lot hotter than what I thought it was going to be right now.”

    Watch FOX 10 Phoenix live:

Opinions on the weather varied depending on where they’re from and what temps are like back home.

“I think it’s amazing. I’m from Canada, so this is really nice and warm,” said Alanna Kinsman. “I think we thought it would be 20 celsius, so yes, I thought it would be a little warmer than this but this is ok because the sun is nice and warm. Even though it says its 15, it feels closer to 18 or 20 (celsius).”

“It feels like San Diego, so I guess I can live here, but I know during the summer it will probably be a little hotter,” said Alex Rodriguez, who later changed his answer to, “a lot hotter!”

“It’s a great juxtaposition to the 113°-117° we had this summer. I’m from South Dakota, so this is fantastic to me,” said Kristin Rich. “We actually get to wear sweaters and beanies and not look ridiculous.”

“I am from the East Coast so I kind of love it, the cold,” said Alex Kroot. “In the summer we’re always worried about their (dog) paws and if they’re overheating so I’d rather be extreme in the other direction if I can.”

It is going to get even colder on Tuesday night, so make sure your pipes & plants are covered, and bring your pets inside.

    Winter WeatherPhoenixNews

As the temperatures drop and the leaves begin to change, local businesses and residents are starting to feel the effects of the cooler weather. With the National Weather Service issuing a Freeze Warning for the area, everyone is bracing for the cold snap that is expected to hit in the coming days.

For local businesses, this means stocking up on winter essentials like hot cocoa, firewood, and space heaters. Many are also preparing for an increase in customers looking for warm clothing, blankets, and other cold-weather necessities. With the holiday season just around the corner, businesses are hoping that the cooler weather will bring in more foot traffic and boost sales.

Residents are also taking precautions to stay warm and safe during the Freeze Warning. Many are checking their heating systems, sealing up any drafts in their homes, and stocking up on supplies like extra blankets and canned goods. Pets are being brought inside and outdoor plants are being covered or brought indoors to protect them from the cold.

While the cooler weather may be a welcome change for some, it is important to remember to take precautions to stay safe and warm during the Freeze Warning. Whether you’re a business owner preparing for the influx of customers or a resident getting ready for the cold snap, it’s important to be prepared and stay informed about the weather conditions. Stay warm and stay safe, everyone!

  • Phoenix-area under freeze warning overnight due to bitter cold temps

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — It was a chilly start to our morning on Tuesday with lows in the lower 40s and some areas in the Valley dropping down into the mid-30s. And even colder temperatures are on the way for the deserts of the state.

This afternoon we will see a high of 61 degrees, which is 7 degrees below our average.

Expect to see even colder temperatures tomorrow morning with lows near freezing around the Valley. We have declared a First Alert Weather Day for Wednesday because the National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning until 9 a.m. tomorrow.

After our cold morning, we will start to see warmer temperatures move into the Valley. Wednesday’s high will be in the upper 60s.

Even warmer weather is expected Thursday through Saturday, with highs in the lower 70s.

Another storm system will bring a chance of light rain here in the Valley and some snow in the High Country. The expected timing on this will be Saturday night through Sunday evening, but we will have a better grasp on what to expect as we get closer.

  • Trump’s day 1 executive actions include federal hiring freeze, return-to-office directive

President Donald Trump issued a slew of executive actions on his first day in office, both reviving familiar efforts from his first term and reversing a number of policies from the Biden administration.

In total, Trump signed more than two dozen executive orders Monday evening, including one that orders a federal hiring freeze at agencies.

“The President will usher a golden age for America by reforming and improving the government bureaucracy to work for the American people,” White House officials wrote in a summary of presidential actions Monday. “He will freeze bureaucrat hiring except in essential areas to end the onslaught of useless and overpaid [diversity, equity and inclusion] activists buried into the federal workforce.”

As of noon on Inauguration Day, the order directs agencies not to fill any vacant federal positions or create any new roles. The executive order clarifies, though, that military personnel, as well as employees in immigration enforcement, national security or public safety positions are exempt from the hiring freeze. The Office of Personnel Management also has the authority to grant further hiring exemptions as necessary. The EO prohibits agencies from hiring more contractors in response to the order.

Trump also directed OPM and the Office of Management and Budget to work with the Department of Government Efficiency, a nongovernmental advisory panel, to submit a plan for reducing the size of the federal workforce “through efficiency improvements and attrition.” Once the agencies and DOGE submit their proposal, the hiring freeze will lift — except for at the IRS, which the order said will remain under a hiring freeze until it’s determined that “it is in the national interest to lift the freeze.”

The hiring freeze has implications for federal employees working across the country, as more than 80% of the federal workforce operates outside the Washington, D.C., area. Currently, the federal government employs about 2.2 million career civil servants. Between 2019 and 2023, the federal workforce grew by over 140,000 employees, according to data analysis from the Partnership for Public Service.

Federal unions, organizations and some lawmakers have argued that a federal hiring freeze would prevent agencies from delivering mission critical services to the public. They have said budget limitations already negatively impact the federal workforce and agencies’ ability to carry out their work.

Max Stier, the Partnership’s president and CEO, told reporters last week that a hiring freeze would be “poor management of our government.”

“Broad hiring freezes run contrary to clear needs of the federal workforce to deliver the kinds of services that the public really wants,” Stier said. “If the Trump administration is interested in trying to hold the line on federal hiring, the way to do this is to actually do the hard work of examining where do we need fewer people, and where do we need more.”

For instance, Stier said the Customs and Border Protection would likely need more Border Patrol agents to support the Trump administration’s goals of hardening border security. He added that the Secret Service also faces a “massive challenge” of staffing up to meet its mission.

The new hiring freeze is nearly identical to an executive action Trump took on his first day in office in 2017. At the time, the Trump administration issued a memo to bar agencies from filling vacant positions and creating new positions, except in certain cases to meet national or public security needs. The 2017 hiring freeze lasted until mid-April, and the Trump administration then tasked agencies with restructuring their workforces.

In a 2017 survey by the National Treasury Employees Union, a majority of federal employees said the hiring freeze led to increasing workloads and worsening morale. Agencies including the State Department also said the hiring freeze had lasting, negative impacts even years later.

    Federal employees face return-to-office directive

Beyond the hiring freeze, Trump also signed an executive order Monday telling agencies to return their federal employees to work at the office “as soon as practicable.” The President directed agencies to end remote work arrangements and require employees to work in person full time. The order does give agencies some flexibilities, allowing department and agency heads to “make exemptions they deem necessary.”

The executive action was expected, particularly after Trump made comments during a December press conference saying that all federal employees should return to the office or else be dismissed from their jobs. Trump has also criticized and threatened legal action against the contract signed by the American Federation of Government Employees and the Social Security Administration in November to extend the agency’s current telework policy through 2029.

A White House summary Monday afternoon listed the federal return-to-office mandate as part of what it called its “drain the swamp” agenda.

“President Trump is planning for improved accountability of government bureaucrats,” White House officials wrote Monday. “The American people deserve the highest quality service from people who love our country.”

Returning employees to the office has also been an early priority of DOGE, led by billionaire Elon Musk. In a Nov. 20 Wall Street Journal op-ed, DOGE leaders called for a fully in-person federal workforce and said they would “welcome” voluntary terminations of feds that came as a result of a return-to-office mandate.

Trump officials falsely stated that only 6% of federal employees are working in person. Agency data has shown that more than half of the federal workforce reports to work onsite every day due to the nature of their jobs, such as federal firefighters, park rangers, law enforcement officers, Transportation Security Administration supervisors and many others.

Federal employees who are eligible for telework currently spend about 60% of their work hours in person. The increase of onsite work for federal employees came after the Biden administration told agencies in April 2023 to begin scaling back on telework after the end of the COVID-19 pandemic. By the spring of 2024, many — but not all — agencies were reporting at least a 50% onsite presence of telework-eligible employees.

Trump’s executive order returning federal employees to the office was quickly met with strong pushback from federal unions and lawmakers. Unions have also pointed to the legal standing of collective bargaining agreements with agencies, which typically include provisions on agency telework policies.

“To justify this backward action, lawmakers and members of President Trump’s transition team have spent months exaggerating the number of federal employees who telework and accusing those who do of failing to perform the duties of their jobs. The truth is that less than half of all federal jobs are eligible for telework, and the workers who are eligible to telework still spend most of their work hours at their regular duty stations,” AFGE National President Everett Kelley said in a statement Monday. “Rather than undoing decades of progress in workplace policies that have benefited both employees and their employers, I encourage the Trump administration to rethink its approach and focus on what it can do to make government programs work better for the American people.”

A return-to-office directive would also likely run into challenges with physical office space. Some agencies have scaled back their federal office holdings over the last few years, leaving limited amount of space available for a fully in-person workforce. The Biden administration’s Office of Management and Budget also said it expected agencies to shed millions of square feet of building space in the coming years, as many federal employees now operate under a hybrid work schedule.

Republican lawmakers have repeatedly criticized telework options for federal employees, arguing that it worsens agency services to the public, and contributes to delays and backlogs at agencies. GOP leaders on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee have been particularly vocal about efforts to push federal employees back to fully in-person work.

Some critics of federal telework have also said telework prevents agencies from accurately tracking employees’ productivity levels and leaves federal office buildings largely vacant.

The Biden administration’s OPM, however, reported that agencies have improved their ability to track and measure telework’s impact on productivity. In a December 2024 report to Congress, then-OPM Acting Director Rob Shriver also said telework has led to “significant increases” in human capital cost savings due to reduced attrition at agencies. Federal telework may also lead to reduced real estate costs for agencies, OPM said, as agencies continue to downsize their federal footprint.

“The results are clear,” Shriver said. “In this transition period agencies report notable improvements in recruitment and retention, enhanced employee performance and organizational productivity and considerable cost savings when utilizing telework as an element of their hybrid work environments.”

On his first day in office, President Trump wasted no time in taking action to fulfill his campaign promises. Some of the key executive actions he signed on day 1 include a federal hiring freeze and a return-to-office directive for federal employees.

The federal hiring freeze is aimed at reducing the size of the federal government and cutting costs. This freeze will apply to all federal agencies, with exceptions for national security and public safety positions. The goal is to streamline government operations and make it more efficient.

Additionally, the return-to-office directive instructs federal employees to return to their physical offices and resume in-person work, rather than continuing to work remotely. This directive is a signal of Trump’s commitment to getting the country back to normalcy and reviving the economy.

These actions are just the beginning of Trump’s agenda to reshape the federal government and prioritize the needs of the American people. Stay tuned for more updates on Trump’s executive actions and their impact on the country.

  • Major weather changes ahead for Arizona, including freeze warning

PHOENIX (AZFamily) — A sunny, but chilly Martin Luther King Day on this Monday. Overnight lows were freezing in some of the outlying areas of the Valley, with a low of 39 degrees at Sky Harbor Airport.

This is seven degrees below average, and these cold mornings will persist throughout the week as we declare a First Alert for freezing temperatures across most of the metro area Wednesday morning.

Overnight lows will be at or below freezing in many of the Valley cold spots, so protection of your pipes, plants and pets will be needed on Wednesday. A Freeze Watch has been issued but will likely be upgraded to a warning by Tuesday.

A freeze warning has been issued for tonight and tomorrow morning in western Arizona. This goes along with a Wind Advisory that is also in effect through late tonight. These windy and cooler temperatures are all due to a massive trough in the jetstream with a high-pressure ridge just to our west. This is causing high fire danger conditions once again in Southern California.

We should expect some breeziness across the Valley late today and tonight, possibly with blowing dust in the western part of Maricopa County. High wind gusts up to 50 mph could be possible tonight across Northern and Eastern Arizona.

These breezy and sometimes windy conditions should keep us well above freezing tonight and tomorrow morning. But after highs only in the low 60s, our First Alert for freezing temperatures will go into effect Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.

With the colder air shifting east of the state Tuesday night, daytime highs should warm into the mid-60s Wednesday and back to the 70s Thursday-Saturday. Long-range models bring in a chance of rain into the valley by Sunday.

Confidence is still rather low at this point, but confidence is high when it comes to cooler temperatures across the state on Sunday and Monday next week.

  • YouTube TV recordings ‘freeze’ for Roku users when fast-fowarding

For many YouTube TV viewers on Roku, a problem with fast-forwarding while watching DVR recordings is causing playback problems as the content is left frozen.

Recordings are a huge part of the appeal of YouTube TV, so when there are issues, it causes a lot of frustration for users. For many on Roku, that’s exactly the problem, as an ongoing YouTube TV issue is causing playback of recordings to freeze.

For the past couple of weeks, some YouTube TV subscribers on Roku have noticed that trying to fast-forward recordings leaves playback frozen. The only fix is to fully exit the YouTube TV app and then return later and restart the recording. The problem is limited to Roku devices and not present on others, including Google TV devices.

YouTube TV is aware of the problem and looking into reports, so a fix is likely coming soon.

In the meantime, one Reddit user found a potential workaround. Apparently, fast-forwarding one “step” at a time leaves the content playing as usual. This only works to a certain point, as going more than a few steps forward will freeze the content. Others say that changing quality seems to force the frozen content to resume. In either case, it’s not an ideal fix, and Google will need to step in to patch things up.

If you’re a Roku user who loves using YouTube TV to record your favorite shows, you may have encountered a frustrating issue where your recordings ‘freeze’ when fast-forwarding through them. This glitch can be incredibly annoying, especially when you’re trying to skip through commercials or catch up on a show quickly.

Unfortunately, this issue seems to be a common problem for Roku users, and there doesn’t appear to be a definitive solution yet. Some users have reported that restarting the Roku device or clearing the cache can help temporarily alleviate the problem, but it often returns.

If you’re experiencing this issue, the best course of action may be to reach out to YouTube TV’s customer support for assistance. They may be able to provide further troubleshooting steps or escalate the issue to their technical team for a fix.

In the meantime, we can only hope that YouTube TV and Roku work together to address this frustrating bug and provide a seamless viewing experience for all users.

  • Trump to again freeze federal hiring

President Trump will institute a government hiring freeze that will include some exceptions, his team announced just after his swearing in.

The order is expected to take effect immediately after Trump signs it Monday, his first day in office, and mirrors action Trump took upon taking office in 2017. The president will exempt “essential areas” from the freeze, according to a summary of his Day 1 plans, though the document did not detail the nature of those exceptions. Trump is expected to allow hiring to continue at immigration-related agencies and areas of national security.

“The president will usher a Golden Age for America by reforming and improving the government bureaucracy to work for the American people,” the White House said in its memorandum. “He will freeze bureaucrat hiring except in essential areas to end the onslaught of useless and overpaid DEI activists buried into the federal workforce.”

The White House said it is implementing the freeze as part of the president’s “drain the swamp” agenda. Trump is also pausing all regulatory efforts currently underway, a standard move for incoming presidents. He will take other actions to reshape federal civil service laws, the details of which are forthcoming.

The first Trump administration instituted a 79-day hiring freeze across the federal government ahead of an ambitious plan by then-Office of Management and Budget Director Mick Mulvaney to reorganize agencies to be more efficient and run with fewer employees. Trump at that time offered exemptions to the freeze for roles performing national security or public safety responsibilities.

The impact of Trump’s first freeze was felt in agencies long after it ended in April 2017, when Mulvaney issued a memorandum to agencies tasking them with developing short and long-term plans to cut their rolls. By the end of Trump’s term, most agency leaders wound up publicly stating they had undertaken efforts to rebuild their workforces. Still, virtually all of them ended his administration with a smaller footprint than they maintained just before Trump took office.

The State Department went further, extending its hiring freeze another 13 months as workforce numbers soon dwindled.

A former Trump administration official involved in federal personnel policy recently told Government Executive that other administration officials eventually made clear after their initial months in office they were not interested in taking a “logical, rational approach” to reducing federal workforce rolls. Some of the officials who drove those efforts in Trump’s first term, such as Office of Management and Budget Director-designate Russ Vought and Domestic Policy Council advisor James Sherk, are slated to return to the fold this time around.

Trump will also stand up the Department of Government Efficiency, led by billionaire businessman and confidante of the president Elon Musk, as a non-governmental entity that will seek to reduce the federal workforce and otherwise slash federal spending. The American Federation of Government Employees, the largest federal worker union, along with watchdog groups, sued the efficiency commission immediately after Trump’s inauguration saying it does not comply with the Federal Advisory Committee Act.

“AFGE will not stand idly by as a secretive group of ultra-wealthy individuals with major conflicts of interest attempt to deregulate themselves and give their own companies sweetheart government contracts while firing civil servants and dismantling the institutions designed to serve the American people,” AFGE President Everett Kelly said. “Federal employees are not the problem—they are the solution.”

Trump in his Inaugural Address said DOGE would “restore competence and effectiveness” in the federal government.

Trump is not unique in wanting to pause federal hiring upon taking office. Presidents Carter and Reagan both instituted hiring freezes, with the former halting recruitment three times in a four-year term.

The Government Accountability Office raised concerns about the impact of Trump’s and previous hiring freezes, saying they were not effective and exacerbate existing workforce problems. Such freezes, GAO said, cause agencies to hire contractors and temporary staff.

“If you want to reduce the workforce, you have to reduce the functions they’re doing,” GAO chief Gene Dodaro told Congress in 2017. “And you have to be able to realign the workforce.”

GAO also found that agencies with exceptions, such as the Veterans Affairs Department that allowed the hiring of doctors and nurses to continue, still experienced fallout as they suffered from a lack of support staff.

When Trump ended the freeze, he tasked agencies to create plans to reshape themselves. Few of those plans were ever brought into effect as they ran headlong into congressional resistance. White House officials later refuted that the overall plans were intended to reduce federal workforce personnel.

Some federal agencies have already implemented hiring restrictions due to budget caps and the short-term funding mechanism under which they are currently operating.

President Trump has announced plans to once again freeze federal hiring in an effort to cut costs and streamline the government workforce. This move comes as part of the administration’s ongoing efforts to reduce government spending and make the federal government more efficient.

The freeze on federal hiring will apply to all non-military federal employees, and exceptions will only be made for positions deemed critical to national security or public safety. The freeze is expected to remain in place until the administration can conduct a thorough review of the federal workforce and determine where cuts can be made.

Critics of the freeze argue that it will lead to understaffing and decreased efficiency in government agencies, while supporters say it is necessary to rein in government spending and reduce the size of the federal workforce. Regardless of where you stand on the issue, it is clear that President Trump’s decision to freeze federal hiring will have a significant impact on the government workforce and the services it provides to the American people.

  • NOPD warns of possible road closures ahead of freeze

Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick says elevated roadways, bridges, and ramps would be the first to be shut down.

NEW ORLEANS — With a freeze coming to Southeast Louisiana early next week, and the chance of ice and snow along with it, the NOPD said it is planning to close roads early. The exact timing will depend on how quickly the frigid air moves into the area.

“I don’t want people already out there and then we close streets,” said Supt. Anne Kirkpatrick at a press conference Friday, “so I’m going to try to get ahead of it.”

She said elevated roadways, bridges, and ramps would be the first to be shut down, as they are the first to freeze in cold weather. The NOPD leaders gathered Friday referenced the winter storm of January 28, 2014 multiple times.

“We responded to numerous accidents, which in turn also caused police to be in harm’s way,” said Lt. Anthony Micheu.

That included the elevated portion of Highway 90, where many cars got stranded for days. Lt. Micheu said the same could happen again if more ice were to form on the roads.

“At certain points we will not be able to get the police onto these elevated portions because the vehicles will not make it up the bridge,” he said.

With that, the NOPD’s message to the public is simple– stay home if you are able. “This is the day for you to talk with your employers about whether or not your employer will allow you to stay home,” said Supt. Kirkpatrick.

WWL Louisiana also reached out to Louisiana State Police about the possibility of an interstate closure.

A spokesperson said “LSP will collaborate with DOTD to monitor the condition of the roadways and evaluate the need for any closures.” She added that “during the weather event, we will use our social media platforms (Facebook, X, Instagram) to disseminate the most up-to-date information.”

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) is advising residents to be prepared for possible road closures ahead of an anticipated freeze in the area. With temperatures expected to drop below freezing, icy road conditions could pose a danger to drivers.

NOPD is urging motorists to exercise caution and be aware of potential road closures due to icy conditions. It is important to plan ahead and allow extra time for travel in case of detours or delays.

In the event of road closures, NOPD will provide updates and information on social media and local news outlets. Residents are encouraged to stay informed and heed any warnings or advisories issued by authorities.

Remember to drive slowly and carefully on icy roads, and avoid unnecessary travel if possible. Stay safe and stay informed during this cold weather snap.

  • Polar vortex maps show where arctic blast is set to freeze the U.S. as far as the Deep South

With the Northern Hemisphere well into the winter months, it may seem like temperatures are cold enough already. However, a deep freeze, thanks to the polar vortex dipping down from Siberia, is about to bring even harsher arctic blast to nearly 300 million Americans starting this weekend. Maps show where and when the cold front will arrive.

The polar vortex is a large area of cold air and low pressure that normally spins over the North and South Poles. During the winter months and when the jet stream allows, this cold air can drop farther down into lower latitudes like in the United States. This is forecast to happen as soon as this weekend.

Map of Saturday highs and wind chills

Beginning Saturday, the polar vortex will begin to dip down into the northern tier of the U.S., dropping temperatures into the single digits. Wind chills will already be dropping into the negative teens for that region. Forecast temperatures will be 20-25 degrees below average for this time of year.

On Sunday, the chills really start to kick in, with temperatures dropping into the teens across the Central Plains. Wind chills will be down to the negative 20s in the Northern Plains and single digits for the Central Plains, making for dangerously cold conditions for those attending NFL playoff games. Forecast temperatures will be 25-30 degrees below average for this time of year.

Map of Monday highs and wind chills

On Monday, the polar vortex will reach the Deep South, with temperatures down to the freezing point of 32 degrees Fahrenheit in Atlanta. Wind chills will be in the 20s. Across the Rockies, Plains and Midwest, some areas won’t make it out of the single digits.

At least 19 record-cold high temperatures are expected from the Plains into the East. Forecast temperatures will be 25-30 degrees below average for this time of year.

Inauguration Day weather forecast for Washington, D.C.

For the presidential inauguration on Monday in Washington, D.C., skies will be mostly sunny, with temperatures in the low 20s. Wind chills are forecast to be in the single digits.

Due to the extreme cold, President-elect Donald Trump announced Friday that the ceremony will be held indoors, in the Capitol Rotunda, instead of the stage that had been set up outside.

“There is an Arctic blast sweeping the Country,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “I don’t want to see people hurt, or injured, in any way.”

This will mark the coldest Inauguration Day in 40 years. In 1985, it only reached 7 degrees for President Ronald Reagan’s second swearing in, causing the ceremony to move indoors and the parade to be canceled.

The Polar Vortex is on the move, and it’s bringing a deep freeze to parts of the U.S. that rarely see such cold temperatures. Maps show that the arctic blast is set to reach as far as the Deep South, with states like Texas, Louisiana, and Mississippi all expected to experience below-freezing temperatures.

The extreme cold is expected to bring dangerous conditions, with frostbite and hypothermia a very real threat for those caught outside without proper protection. Residents in these areas are urged to take precautions, such as staying inside as much as possible, dressing in layers, and keeping an eye on weather updates.

The Polar Vortex is a reminder of the power of nature and the importance of being prepared for extreme weather events. Stay safe and stay warm, no matter where you are in the country.
