  • Sources – Brady Smigiel, No. 36 recruit for ’26, pulls FSU commit

Four-star quarterback Brady Smigiel, ESPN’s No. 36 overall recruit in the class of 2026, has decommitted from Florida State, sources told ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Sunday.

The 6-foot-5 Smigiel, ESPN’s fourth-ranked pocket passer in the 2026 recruiting cycle, initially committed to Florida State in June, picking the Seminoles over Ohio State, Oregon and Washington. He now stands as the No. 2 uncommitted quarterback in the upcoming cycle, trailing only five-star quarterback and former Georgia pledge Jared Curtis (No. 4 overall).

Smigiel’s decommitment comes one day after he received an in-home visit from Ohio State offensive coordinator Chip Kelly on Saturday. Michigan, South Carolina, Washington, UCLA and Michigan State also stand among the programs that are expected to be involved in Smigiel’s recruitment moving forward.

A three-year starter at Newbury Park (California) High School, Smigiel led the program to a 14-1 record and a division title this past fall while throwing for 3,521 yards and 49 touchdowns in his junior season. Equipped with a strong arm, standout downfield accuracy and an ability to move within the pocket, Smigiel totaled 7,701 passing yards and 98 touchdowns across his first two high school campaigns in 2022 and 2023.

His exit from coach Mike Norvell’s 2026 class stands as a significant loss for the Seminoles, who lost a total of 10 commitments in the final months of the 2025 cycle, including eight from the ESPN 300. Without Smigiel, Florida State now holds five commitments in the 2026 class, led by ESPN 300 athletes Efrem White (No. 112 overall) and Darryon Williams (No. 244).

Only eight of the 18 quarterbacks ranked in the 2026 ESPN 300 remain uncommitted more than 10 months out from the early signing period.

Sources have revealed that Brady Smigiel, the No. 36 recruit for the class of 2026, has decided to pull his commitment to Florida State University. This unexpected move has shocked many in the recruiting world, as Smigiel was considered a key player for the Seminoles’ future success. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story. #BradySmigiel #FSUcommit #recruitingnews

  • Shorthanded Jackets fall short in comeback bid at FSU 91-78

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.— Georgia Tech traveled down to Florida State aiming to get off the mat after several tough ACC losses but came up short in a comeback bid losing 91-78 to the Noles. The Jackets fell to 8-11 overall and 2-6 in ACC play while FSU improved to 13-5 overall and 4-3 in league play with the win.

Tech entered the game without starters Kowacie Reeves and Luke O’Brien who have both been out for weeks with foot injuries and backup guard turned starter Jaeden Mustaf was also out with an ankle injury thinning the Jackets to a six-man rotation against a deep Florida State team.

“I’m proud of the team and proud of my guys. I thought they played hard and gave themselves a chance to win the game. We had more assists than turnovers against a team that prides themselves on forcing turnovers. I know all the obstacles we are facing, but I’m not into all of that. But what I’m proud of is those guys went out there and played hard and we took hits and it was a really fun game to watch,” Stoudamire said. “Sometimes you see your team growing in those moments and guys are giving all they have and that is a testament to them. I’m happy they are fighting and we are going to get some payback for it.”

Senior guard Lance Terry battled through a hand injury to lead all scorers with 23 points on 9-17 shooting. Terry was 7-9 in the second half with 17 of his 23 points.

Terry after a slow start said adrenaline kicked in and carried him in the second half despite playing through pain.

“I just kept playing hard and that adrenaline kicked in toward the end and I’m continuing to try to play hard despite how I was feeling,” Terry said.

Guard Javian McCollum and forward Duncan Powell each added 20 points as well with Powell providing his points off the bench in 33 minutes. McCollum did all of his damage in the second half with 18 of his 20 points coming on 4-8 shooting from three.

Big man Baye Ndongo was a non-factor offensively but provided 12 rebounds for the Jackets.

Tech only had 12 turnovers in the game and had 13 assists on 26 made field goals marking the first game in several that the Jackets finished on the positive side of the assist-to-turnover ratio.

Taylor Bol Bowen led FSU with 20 points in 28 minutes of action on 7-9 shooting with three made threes on five attempts. FSU shot 52.2 percent for the game and 9-27 from three.

Malik Ewin and Jamir Watkins each had 17 points for the Noles with Ewin posting a double-double

Second-chance points were the big difference maker. Florida State had 20 second-chance points on 12 offensive boards, while Tech had just 12 second-chance points on 10 offensive boards.

The Jackets started very slowly, shooting just 25.9 percent in the first half and 2-14 from three with 7 turnovers. Florida State was more consistent, shooting 44.1 percent and 5-17 from three to put up a 13-point first-half lead over the Jackets.

“I thought we came out in the first half with a lot of energy and created some easy baskets and I thought we were playing elite defense and our offense was a little spotty. In the second half they scored 50-something points and after not being able to score much in the second half. That says a lot about the growth we need to be making and be effective for the whole 40 minutes,” FSU coach Leonard Hamilton said.

Hamilton was impressed with the Jackets’ performance given how shorthanded Tech is at the moment.

“It says a lot about the relationship they have with each other and the coach to keep them motivated. We went through a stretch with unbelievable injuries and it is hard to play in the ACC with six players. You have to play hard and defend and stay out of foul trouble. You aren’t quite as aggressive and now you are playing cautious and they kept coming back, it says a lot about them. They have four guys who shoot 40% from three when they get into the lane and spray the ball to guys. When we were better defensively we held them in check, then sometimes you fail and they hit some uncontested threes,” Hamilton said.

Tech returns home to play the other Tech, Virginia Tech on Wednesday night in McCamish Pavilion before a week break.

Georgia Tech dug an early hole trailing 15-4 at the first media timeout after a 1-8 start shooting. The Jackets maintained a solid deficit trailing 26-10 at the U-8 media timeout. Tech trailed by 13 at the break 37-24

Tech opened the second half with a 10-0 run to cut the FSU lead to three, 37-34 in the first two minutes of the half. The Noles pushed back out by eight at the first media timeout of the second half with 15:40 left in the game, 42-34. Ibrahim Souare picked up his fourth foul with 13:43 left in the game. Ndongo picked up his fourth foul with 9:24 left in the game and the Jackets down 58-51. Stoudamire used a timeout with 7:54 left after Tech gave up a 6-0 run after cutting FSU’s lead to six down 65-55. Tech cut the lead to six 69-63 but Ndongo fouled out on the other end of the court fouling Taylor Bol Bowen on a desperation three. Tech ten missed four straight free throws as the Noles pushed the lead back to 11, 77-66 with four minutes to play. The Noles closed the game with a 16-3 run

The Ohio State men’s basketball team came up short in their comeback bid against Florida State, falling 91-78 in a shorthanded effort.

Despite missing key players due to injuries and illness, the Buckeyes battled hard against the Seminoles but ultimately couldn’t overcome the deficit.

The loss drops Ohio State to 7-3 on the season, but the team showed resilience and fight in the face of adversity.

Head coach Chris Holtmann praised his team’s effort and determination, but acknowledged that they have to do a better job of closing out games.

The Buckeyes will look to regroup and bounce back in their next game, as they continue to navigate through a challenging stretch of their schedule.

  • FSU Basketball leads wire-to-wire in win over Georgia Tech

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State basketball (13-5, 4-3 ACC) earned its sixth win in the last eight games with a 91-78 win over Georgia Tech (8-11, 2-6 ACC) at the Donald L. Tucker Center on Saturday afternoon. FSU led wire-to-wire, scoring on its first possession and never relinquishing the lead. The Seminoles have won seven consecutive home games against the Yellow Jackets, dating back to February 24, 2018. FSU has won three straight ACC home games.

Florida State led 37-24 at the half. Offensively, FSU had an efficient half with 11 assists and one turnover. The Seminoles shot 44.1% from the floor and made five of 17 three-pointers (29.4%). Jamir Watkins and Jerry Deng produced four of those first-half triples. Watkins led the Seminoles with nine points. Justin Thomas collected seven boards, four more than in any other game as a Seminole, and tied a season-high with four assists.

FSU forced seven Georgia Tech turnovers, leading to 15 points. The rebounding was even in the half as the Yellow Jackets reeled in one more board than FSU with 21. GT’s short-handed offense was ice-cold, shooting 26% from the floor and only making two of 14 three-point attempts. Duncan Powell led GT with 11 points.

The Yellow Jackets quickly made it a one-possession game with a 10-0 run in the first two minutes of the second half. After a clean first half, the Seminoles turned it over three times in its first three possessions. Back-to-back and-ones made it a 37-34 game with 18 minutes remaining.

Florida State’s defense tightened up after the quick run, holding GT scoreless for the next 2:26. Taylor Bol Bowen hit a pair of crucial three-pointers in the first few minutes of the half. Before the U12 media timeout, Bowen had scored eight of FSU’s 19 points. It was his sixth double-digit scoring performance of the season. FSU extended its lead back to 10 with 11:32 remaining. Junior guard Chandler Jackson suffered a lower body shortly after the TO and didn’t return.

After Bowen went 1/3 at the free throw line, Georgia Tech cut Florida State’s lead to four with a corner three. Once again, the Seminoles had a response to the Yellow Jackets. FSU went on a 7-0 run, highlighted by an and-one by freshman Daquan Davis. Malique Ewin also notched his fourth consecutive double-double. GT missed four crucial free throws in that stretch and big man Baye Ndongo fouled out.

With GT limited to five available players, the Seminoles put the finishing touches on the Yellow Jackets. FSU went on another 9-0 run, featuring massive dunks from Watkins and Bowen. An alley-oop slap by Bowen capped a 16-3 run over 2:48. That dunk gave him a career-high 20 points.

Watkins and Ewin each produced 17 points. Watkins had five boards and three assists while Ewin had 11 boards and four assists.

FSU shot 52.2% from the floor on 67 attempts and was 9-27 from three (33.3%). The Seminoles were 12-17 on free throws. They turned it over eight times compared to Georgia Tech’s 12 turnovers. FSU also finished with 39 rebounds, seven more than GT. They had 23 fast break points, compared to only nine for the Yellow Jackets.

Up Next: FSU travels to the West Coast for a Wednesday night matchup against Cal (8-9, 1-5 ACC entering Saturday). The Seminoles’ game against the Bears will be televised on ACC Network at 9:00 p.m.

The Florida State University basketball team put on a dominating performance from start to finish in their recent matchup against Georgia Tech. The Seminoles came out strong and never looked back, leading wire-to-wire in a convincing win.

FSU’s defense was stifling, forcing turnovers and contesting shots, while their offense was firing on all cylinders. The team moved the ball well, finding open looks and capitalizing on them with precision shooting.

Key players stepped up for the Seminoles, with standout performances from both the starters and bench players. The depth and talent of the team were on full display, with contributions coming from all areas of the roster.

The win was a statement victory for FSU, showcasing their ability to dominate a top opponent in the conference. The team’s chemistry and execution were on point, and they will look to carry this momentum into future games.

With this impressive wire-to-wire win over Georgia Tech, FSU has proven once again that they are a force to be reckoned with in college basketball. Fans can look forward to more exciting games and strong performances from the Seminoles as they continue their march towards a successful season.

  • FSU men’s hoops vs. Georgia Tech: Preview, game thread

Florida State men’s basketball (12-5, 3-3) takes on Georgia Tech (8-10, 2-5) this afternoon, looking to close their homestand 2-0, before heading west for road matchups in California. The Seminoles defeated Pitt on Wednesday in a physical, emotional affair and want to carry that same intensity into today’s game.

    How to watch:

The Seminoles tip-off is at noon ET from the Tucker Center and can be found on ESPNU.

    Notes to know:
After defeating the Panthers, FSU picked up its first Quad 1 win of the season, pushing its NET rating to 64 as it sits on the very far outside of the bubble, but not a popped one. Unfortunately, with the ACC being the worst power conference in CBB this season, the next chance for a Quad 1 win is at the end of February on the road against Louisville. The media picked Georgia Tech to finish 12th in the ACC, and so far, they were correct. GT sits at 155th in the NET, making Saturday a Quad 3 chance.

    – The Yellow Jackets finished 14-18 in the 23-24 season, but head coach Damon Stoudamire ended the year with impressive wins and seemed to be pushing the program in the right direction. However, Stoudamire could not capitalize on the momentum, and GT started the year on the wrong foot with a brutal home loss to UNF and could not get the train back on track. They are under .500 and are on a three-game losing streak at the hands of Syracuse, SMU, and Clemson. A big reason for their lack of success comes from their unlucky run of injuries. GT played without three starters against the Tigers during the week: Lance Terry, Kowacie Reeves Jr., and Luke O’Brien, while only two players have appeared in all 18 games.

    – Georgia Tech does not do a lot well offensively, and they are certainly not good from long-range, which is a welcome sight for the Seminoles. GT shoots 34% from three, good for 139th in the country, and makes 7.7, ranking 165th. If the Yellow Jackets do one thing well, they play as a unit. They are 53rd in the NCAA in assists per game with 15.7.

    Players to know:

    – G Lance Terry: Terry did not suit up against Clemson for the first time this year with what Georgia Tech reported as a hand injury. His status is up in the air for Saturday, leading to a massive swing on the game, depending on which direction it goes. He scored double figures in five straight games until his injury, including a 20-point performance against Notre Dame, and he leads GT in scoring with 15.4 points per game.

    – G Naithan George: George, one of two players to participate in all 18 games for Georgia Tech, leads his team in assists with 6.3 while chipping in 10.4 points per game. The 6’3’’ sophomore ranks first in minutes, played with 32.3, and plays a physical brand of basketball with 3.7 rebounds and 0.7 steals per game.

    – F Baye Ndongo: Ndongo, the other player to suit up for all 18 games, averages 12 points a night while leading his team in rebounds with 7.2 per game. The sophomore Sengalian dropped a 14-point, 12-rebound double-double against Clemson Tuesday while playing 38 minutes.

FSU men’s hoops vs. Georgia Tech: Preview, game thread

The Florida State Seminoles men’s basketball team is set to take on the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets in what promises to be an exciting matchup. Both teams are coming off strong performances and will be looking to continue their winning ways.

FSU is currently on a three-game winning streak and sits at the top of the ACC standings. Led by standout players such as Scottie Barnes and MJ Walker, the Seminoles have shown their ability to compete with some of the best teams in the country.

On the other hand, Georgia Tech has had a solid season so far, with wins over top-ranked opponents like North Carolina and Virginia. The Yellow Jackets are a tough and physical team that will pose a challenge for FSU.

This game is sure to be a close and intense battle, with both teams fighting for a crucial win in conference play. Join us in the game thread as we discuss all the action and cheer on our Seminoles to victory! #GoNoles

The reigning national runner up California women’s water polo team is set to kick off the 2025 season this weekend at the Fresno State Polo-Palooza. This will be the third straight year the Golden Bears begin their season at the Fresno Aquatics Center. Just as it did last year, Cal will face three top-18 opponents and end the weekend with an exhibition with No. 5 Hawai’i at 10:20 a.m. PT on Sunday in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship semifinal.

    BEAR NECESSITIES

    2024 RECAP

Boasting the nation’s best defense throughout the year, Cal finished as the runner-up in both the NCAA and MPSF Championships, advancing to the NCAA Championship final for the second time in program history. The Bears posted their second straight 19-win season, going 19-7 (.731), good for their highest win percentage since 2018. At the heart of their success was the play of graduated senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams, who set the team’s all-time career saves record on her way to becoming the first Bear in program history to win the prestigious Peter J. Cutino Award, given to the top player in the NCAA.

    NET FINDERS

Although the Bears also graduated their top scorer from last year, Maryn Dempsey – who is currently scoring goals for Team USA in the group stage of the 2025 World Cup – the team returns a bulk of its offensive contributors. Senior Elena Flynn finished second on the team with 44 goals in a dazzling debut season after transferring from UC Irvine, resulting in a third consecutive All-America selection. Sophomore Feline Voordouw poured in 31 goals in a standout freshman campaign.

The season-opening tournament also marks the return of two-time All-American Ruby Swadling, who missed the 2024 season to train for the Australia National Team.

    PAN-AM GOLD

Sophomore Julia Bonaguidi – another standout from Cal’s 2024 freshman class – competed alongside current freshman Rosalie Hassett for Team USA in the 2024 Pan-American Championships in November, putting away seven and six goals, respectively, on their way to an 18-5 win over Argentina in the final. They became the first Bears to win gold at the tournament since current Cal assistant coach Heather Petri and Elsie Windes in 2011.

    HALL OF FAME COACHING STAFF

Cal head coach Coralie Simmons and associate head coach Heather Petri are among the most decorated figures in the sport. Simmons – one of the great trailblazers of the women’s water polo world who earned two NCAA Player of the Year awards while competing for UCLA, won three NCAA Championships and an Olympic silver medal with Team USA – was one of five members in the 39th induction class of the USA Water Polo Hall of Fame in 2023. Her 131 wins at Cal rank second in program history. Last May, she became the first female head coach in NCAA history to reach the NCAA championship game. Petri – the only four-time female Olympian in Cal history – was named to the International Swimming Hall of Fame in 2023. Joining them on the staff for the fourth straight year is assistant coach Lance Morrison, who played Division I water polo at Pacific.
