  • US yields fall to lowest this year as tech risk fuels haven bid

(Bloomberg) — US Treasuries rallied on Monday as investors flocked to safe assets after technology firms drove a slump in equity markets.

    Most Read from Bloomberg

The yield on 10-year US bonds fell as much as 12 basis points — the most in almost two weeks — to 4.50%, while the policy-sensitive two-year rate dropped 10 basis points to 4.17%, the lowest in over a month. Haven currencies including the yen and the Swiss franc surged.

Global markets were shaken by news of a fresh artificial intelligence model from Chinese startup DeepSeek, which raised questions over America’s technological dominance and fueled concerns that sky-high US tech valuations may come under pressure. Tech stocks plunged across the globe.

“There is a high level of concentration in equity markets on certain stocks, unprecedented in nature, so that could pose some market-driven risks and that will support bonds for now,” said Ella Hoxha, head of fixed income at Newton Investment Management, commenting on the rout in tech stocks.

The gains in bonds and haven currencies come in what’s likely to be a choppy week for markets, with the Federal Reserve setting monetary policy on Wednesday and tariff talks remaining in focus. Investors are still digesting the weekend tussle between President Donald Trump and Colombia, with the latter swiftly agreeing to the return of migrants to avoid hefty levies.

“The incident again shows that tariffs are a negotiating tool, but markets need to price in some premium for the volatility that such announcements will bring,” said Mohit Kumar, chief economist and strategist for Europe at Jefferies International.

The yen and the franc, traditionally seen as safe currencies, rallied as investors sought havens. The Japanese currency gained as much as 1.5% to 153.72 per dollar, the strongest level in more than five weeks, while its Swiss peer jumped 1% to 0.8965 per dollar.

The US dollar traded mixed against its Group-of-10 peers, with a broad gauge of its strength edging lower. Demand for foreign-exchange options, meanwhile, picked up as traders added long-volatility exposure.

“The clearest analogy that comes to mind is the DotCom unwind of the 2000s where an external shock forced a large sector-specific unwind of US tech valuations,” said George Saravelos, global head of FX research at Deutsche Bank AG. That ultimately resulted in “a weaker dollar via an unwind of equity inflows and narrowing rate differentials versus the rest of the world,” he wrote in a note to clients.

The US Treasury yields have fallen to their lowest levels this year as concerns over the tech sector continue to fuel demand for safe-haven assets.

Investors are turning to Treasuries as a hedge against the volatility in the tech sector, which has been facing increased scrutiny from regulators and lawmakers. This has led to a flight to safety, pushing yields lower.

The benchmark 10-year Treasury yield fell to 1.25% on Wednesday, its lowest level since February. The 30-year yield also dropped to 1.88%, the lowest since March.

The tech sector has been under pressure in recent weeks as concerns over rising inflation and potential regulatory crackdowns weigh on the market. This has sparked a rotation out of high-growth tech stocks and into more defensive sectors, driving up demand for safe-haven assets like Treasuries.

Analysts expect yields to remain low in the near term as investors continue to seek safety amid the uncertainty in the tech sector. However, they also warn that a sudden shift in market sentiment could lead to a sharp rise in yields, so investors should remain vigilant.

  • Energy Secretary Pick, Chris Wright, Has Been an Evangelist for Fossil Fuels

Chris Wright, President-elect Donald J. Trump’s pick for energy secretary, tried to reassure Democrats at his confirmation hearing on Wednesday that he believed climate change was a “global challenge that we need to solve” and that he would support the development of all forms of energy, including wind and solar power.

The founder and chief executive of Liberty Energy, a fracking firm, Mr. Wright has been a longtime evangelist for fossil fuels like oil and gas. He has frequently shrugged off the risks of global warming, saying in 2023, “There is no climate crisis, and we’re not in the midst of an energy transition, either.” He has also criticized renewable energy sources like wind and solar power, calling them “unreliable and costly.”

Appearing before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, however, Mr. Wright struck a more diplomatic tone. In his opening statement, he said his top priority was to “unleash” domestic energy production, including liquefied natural gas and nuclear power. Yet under questioning from Senate Democrats, he suggested that he agreed with many of their priorities as well.

At one point, Senator Catherine Cortez Masto, Democrat of Nevada, told Mr. Wright that “the conversation around energy should be balanced and not just focused on fossil fuels.”

“I agree entirely,” Mr. Wright replied, going on to talk about the importance of less-polluting sources of energy like nuclear, geothermal, hydropower, wind and solar power.

The greenhouse gases from burning oil, gas and coal are the main driver of global warming, which made last year the hottest in recorded history.

In one tense exchange, Senator Alex Padilla, Democrat of California, brought up this month’s catastrophic wildfires in Los Angeles. He noted that Mr. Wright had once written in a social media post, “The hype over wildfires is just hype to justify more impoverishment from bad government policies.”

“Do you still believe that wildfires are just hype?” Mr. Padilla asked angrily.

Mr. Wright said that “climate change is a real and global phenomenon” but did not disavow his past writing. Later, however, he clarified that the Energy Department had an important role to play in tackling global warming.

“Do I wish we could make faster progress? Absolutely,” he said. “Are there things we can do, investments together, through the Department of Energy, to accelerate development of new energy technologies that are really the only pathway to address climate change? Absolutely.”

Yet Mr. Wright also promised to enthusiastically support Mr. Trumps’s energy plans, saying, “I will work tirelessly to pursue his bold agenda.”

Mr. Trump, who has repeatedly called global warming a “hoax,” wants to dismantle existing U.S. policies to reduce emissions and has promised to “drill, baby, drill.”

If confirmed, Mr. Wright would run the Energy Department, which plays a central role in developing new energy technologies. The agency oversees a network of 17 national laboratories that conduct cutting-edge research as well as a $400 billion lending program that under President Biden backed dozens of projects, including battery factories in Ohio and Tennessee and a novel rooftop solar expansion in Puerto Rico.

Mr. Wright would also imanage approvals of liquefied gas export terminals, which the Biden administration has tried to slow, angering industry groups.

Managing an agency so sprawling can be challenging. About 80 percent of the Energy Department’s $52 billion annual budget goes toward maintaining the nation’s nuclear arsenal, cleaning up environmental messes from the Cold War and conducting research in areas like high-energy physics.

At his hearing, Mr. Wright declined to go into details about how he would run the department, seeming to signal to Republican and Democrats alike that he was on their side.

Senator Mike Lee, Republican of Utah, raised concerns about potential conflicts of interest at the agency’s Loan Programs Office, the $400 billion lending program that has been an engine of Mr. Biden’s clean energy agenda. The senator asked Mr. Wright to freeze new loan activity on Day 1. Mr. Wright declined to promise that and merely said he would “immediately engage” with the concerns.

Democrats asked Mr. Wright about proposals by conservative groups to dismantle the agency office that works to expand high-voltage power lines across the country. Those lines can greatly benefit wind and solar power, though experts say they are also critical for avoiding blackouts and keeping electricity prices low.

Mr. Wright sidestepped the question but said that building new transmission lines was “very important.”

When asked by Democrats if he would try to rescind spending for clean-energy programs funded by laws passed under the Biden administration — as many of Mr. Trump’s allies have urged — Mr. Wright said that he would follow the law, but he did not elaborate.

On podcasts and in speeches, Mr. Wright frequently makes a moral case for fossil fuels, arguing that the world’s poorest people need oil and gas to realize the benefits of modern life. Researchers have accused him of downplaying the risks of a warming planet: He said on a podcast last year that climate change would have “a slow-moving, modest impact two or three generations from now.”

Mr. Wright graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and did graduate work on solar energy at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1992, he founded Pinnacle Technologies, which created software to measure the motion of fluid beneath the Earth’s surface. The software, which Mr. Wright has called “super nerdy,” helped bring about a commercial shale-gas revolution.

Mr. Wright started Liberty Energy in 2011, and the company has worked with others on geothermal energy and small, modular nuclear reactors.

Mr. Wright holds 2.6 million shares in the company, which are worth more than $55 million based on the current stock price. He has said he intends to step down from Liberty Energy and divest his holdings if confirmed.

While the hearing at several points was interrupted by protesters, who accused Mr. Wright of ignoring climate change while Los Angeles burned, the exchanges were mostly devoid of drama. Republicans, who have a 53-47 majority in the Senate and are confident they can confirm Mr. Wright, praised the nominee’s experience in the energy sector. But even many Democrats seemed to find him acceptable.

At the start, Senator John Hickenlooper, Democrat of Colorado, introduced Mr. Wright, saying the two men had been friendly for years despite often disagreeing on issues like global warming.

“Some people would be surprised that I’m introducing him here,” said Mr. Hickenlooper. “He is indeed an unrestrained enthusiast for fossil fuels in almost every regard.” But, he added, Mr. Wright was “also a scientist who is open to discussion.”

Lisa Friedman contributed to this report from Washington.

President-elect Joe Biden’s choice for Energy Secretary, Chris Wright, has raised eyebrows with his staunch advocacy for fossil fuels. Wright, a former CEO of an oil and gas company, has been a vocal supporter of the industry, despite growing concerns about its impact on climate change.

Critics of Wright’s nomination argue that his close ties to the fossil fuel industry could hinder the Biden administration’s efforts to transition to renewable energy sources and combat climate change. They fear that he may prioritize the interests of oil and gas companies over the need to reduce carbon emissions and invest in clean energy technologies.

Supporters of Wright, on the other hand, point to his experience in the energy sector and believe that his industry knowledge will be an asset in navigating the complex challenges facing the Department of Energy. They argue that his background in fossil fuels does not necessarily mean he will oppose renewable energy initiatives, but rather that he will bring a pragmatic and realistic perspective to the role.

As Wright’s nomination moves forward, the debate over his suitability for the position will likely intensify. It remains to be seen how he will balance his past advocacy for fossil fuels with the Biden administration’s commitment to tackling climate change and promoting clean energy.

  • Michelle Obama Is Setting Boundaries — Even if It Fuels Divorce Rumors

Until they effortlessly shut it down with a loving Instagram tribute, social media was abuzz with speculation that Barack and Michelle Obama are getting a divorce. X thought it, TikTok thought it, even some news outlets were fueling the rumors. However, the former First Lady might just be giving us the best lesson in putting your own needs first. When they go low, we can stay out of it.

The rumors of an impending Obamas divorce stem, of course, from Michelle’s notable absence from events that may cause her to cross paths with President-elect Donald Trump.

    More from SheKnows

Michelle didn’t join her husband at Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Jan. 7, where Trump, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and President Joe Biden were joined by their wives. Michelle also won’t be in attendance at Trump’s Jan. 20 inauguration, leaving Barack to attend alone.

Whether Michelle is deliberately avoiding Trump or not, we do not know. But if this is about refusing to welcome in an administration headed by a convicted felon that the Obamas have been vocal against, Michelle is protecting her peace.

Michelle didn’t give a reason when reps confirmed that Barack would attend Monday’s event alone but reports speculate that she’s not interested in welcoming Trump back into the White House, as she had to do back in 2017.

“There’s no overstating her feelings about [Trump]. She’s not one to plaster on a pleasant face and pretend for protocol’s sake,” a source told People. “Michelle doesn’t do anything because it’s expected or it’s protocol or it’s tradition.”

“She served in the public eye and did all the public good that she could for eight years as first lady,” the source added. “You’ll see her when she has a project or cause to promote but she doesn’t feel the need to be a public figure anymore.”

Of course, Michelle’s distance from all things Trump is not without consequences.

The Obamas Are Facing Divorce Rumors

Despite speculation caused by Barack’s recent solo appearances and Michelle’s inauguration absence, Barack and Michelle are not headed for a divorce, as the former President made clear in a Jan. 17 tribute to his wife for her birthday.

“Happy birthday to the love of my life,” Barack wrote alongside a photo of him holding hands with his wife of 32 years. “You fill every room with warmth, wisdom, humor, and grace – and you look good doing it. I’m so lucky to be able to take on life’s adventures with you. Love you!”

Until then, the couple were last seen together at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago back in August and anyone paying attention to that appearance could have predicted that Michelle might not be too interested in seeing the President-elect.

Aside from championing the candidacy of Vice President Kamala Harris, Michelle didn’t mince her words when she attacked the Republican nominee’s “ugly, misogynistic, racist lies.” The speech was well received at the time but now Michelle is putting her words into action by refusing to stick with the status quo and follow the conventions expected of a former first lady.

Michelle’s Absence From Trump’s Inauguration Marks a New Era

Since Trump’s first term, which succeeded Michelle’s time as First Lady, Michelle has been steadily ramping up her own career.

After eight years of fulfilling her duties as First Lady with the kind of unassuming loyalty exhibited by the women who came before her, 2017 onwards has been all about Michelle forging an identity beyond that of a President’s wife. She has authored three books, spearheaded her and Barack’s production company, Higher Ground, and expanded her philanthropic efforts.

Yet, Michelle’s apparent refusal to be in the same room as Trump feels like a more explicit expression of her refusal to be held back by the obligations that come with life as a politicians husband. Barack must, like other former Presidents, act accordingly. He must sit with his former political rivals, shaking hands and showing respect. But why should Michelle?

In recent weeks, rumors have been swirling about the marriage of former First Lady Michelle Obama and her husband, former President Barack Obama. However, despite the speculation, Michelle is making it clear that she is setting boundaries in her personal life.

Throughout their time in the White House and beyond, the Obamas have been seen as a power couple, showcasing their strong partnership and commitment to each other. But, like any couple, they have faced challenges and obstacles along the way.

Recently, Michelle has been vocal about the importance of setting boundaries and taking care of oneself. In her memoir, “Becoming,” she opens up about the struggles she faced balancing her personal life with her public role as First Lady. She discusses the importance of self-care and making time for oneself, even if it means saying no to certain commitments.

This focus on boundaries and self-care has led to speculation about the state of her marriage, with some wondering if she and Barack are headed for divorce. However, sources close to the couple have dismissed these rumors, stating that Michelle is simply prioritizing her own well-being and setting boundaries in her personal life.

Regardless of the rumors, it’s clear that Michelle Obama is unapologetically putting herself first and setting boundaries that are important to her. And in doing so, she is setting an example for others to do the same, even if it means facing speculation and gossip.

Ultimately, Michelle’s focus on boundaries and self-care is a reminder that it’s important to prioritize our own well-being and set boundaries that are necessary for our own happiness and fulfillment. And if that means fueling divorce rumors, then so be it. Michelle Obama is setting boundaries, and she’s not afraid to do so.

  • J.J. Watt fuels unretirement to join Bengals rumors

Not that long ago, Rob Gronkowski revealed that Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow did, in fact, recruit him to come out of retirement and join the team.

Now it seems we’re getting the J.J. Watt version of that story.

Watt took to social media this weekend to reveal that he had made a specific wager with Burnley F.C. goalkeeper James Trafford.

Simply put, Watt bet Trafford on December 28 that if doesn’t let up another goal for the remainder of the season, Watt would come out of retirement to play for the Bengals.

Since that bet? Burnley has let up zero goals over five matches, including two saved penalty kicks during Trafford’s latest match.

Watt, who is a partial owner of Burnley, posted a caption that says it all:

The Bengals adding Watt to pair with Trey Hendrickson would be wild and go a long way toward fixing one of the defense’s biggest problems.

Reality check time, though — Trafford will have to keep up his end of the bargain through the end of his season on May 3.

In other news, there are suddenly quite a few new Burnley fans in the greater Cincinnati area.

This article originally appeared on Bengals Wire: J.J. Watt fuels unretirement to join Bengals rumors

The rumors surrounding J.J. Watt’s potential unretirement and interest in joining the Cincinnati Bengals have been swirling in recent days. The star defensive end, who announced his retirement from the NFL earlier this year, has reportedly been working out and staying in shape, leading many to speculate that he may be considering a return to the gridiron.

Watt, a three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and one of the most dominant defensive players of his generation, would be a huge addition to any team, including the Bengals. Cincinnati, coming off a successful season that saw them make it to the Super Bowl, could certainly benefit from Watt’s leadership, experience, and playmaking abilities on defense.

While nothing has been confirmed or officially announced yet, the idea of Watt coming out of retirement to join the Bengals has fans buzzing with excitement. Only time will tell if these rumors turn out to be true, but one thing is for sure – if J.J. Watt does decide to make a comeback, it would be a game-changer for Cincinnati and the entire NFL. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Hollow Knight: Silksong Dev Fuels Nintendo Switch 2 Direct Fever With a Picture of a Chocolate Cake

It’s been six years since Team Cherry announced Hollow Knight: Silksong, the eagerly awaited sequel to 2017 Metroidvania masterpiece Hollow Knight. In those years fans have seen Silksong pop up and fail to pop up at various shows, and at one point Microsoft even appeared to confirm the game would launch before June 2023. The Game Awards have been and gone with no Hollow Knight: Silksong. But could the just-announced Nintendo Switch 2 Direct finally be the one?

Fans think so, and it’s all because of a picture of a cake. Allow me to explain.

Supersleuths on the Hollow Knight subreddit noticed that on January 15, co-director of Team Cherry William Pellen had changed his Twitter/X profile picture to a picture of a chocolate cake. Pellen tweeted: “something big is coming. keep your eyes closed tomorrow.”

At the time, Nintendo’s Switch 2 reveal was rumored for January 16, and so it proved. That was the day Nintendo finally announced the Switch 2, although there are still a number of burning questions we have about the next-gen console. Had Pellen really asked followers to keep an eye out for the Switch 2 reveal? If so, why?

This is the point where the Hollow Knight community went into overdrive — or off the deep end, depending on your point of view. Fans reverse-searched the picture of the cake, which led them to a recipe for Brooklyn Blackout Cake on cooking website Bon Appétit. The date the recipe was published: April 2, 2024.

    null
Is the cake a lie? Image credit: Bon Appétit.

Why would that date be important here? Because Nintendo has confirmed Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 will air on Wednesday, April 2, 2025. That’s right, fans think Pellen has kicked off a Silksong alternate reality game (ARG) with that tweet and that picture of the cake.

Fans haven’t stopped there. They’re currently trying to work out what Pellen’s new X/Twitter handle, @everydruidwaswr, means, if anything. Redditor Representative-True has the best theory I’ve seen so far: “The character limit on Twitter handles is 15 characters, which is the length of ‘everydruidwaswr.’ I think “wr” is likely the start of a word, like wrong or something. I have yet to decipher this, but the Druid of the Moss Temple is a Silksong NPC.”

The plot thickens! Pellen has a new X/Twitter name to go along with the new handle and profile picture: little bomey. What’s that about? Fans have noticed Little Boomey is a wine from Southern Australia, where Team Cherry is based, but the spelling is different. What could it mean?!

It’s worth remembering that when Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced, Team Cherry confirmed launch platforms as Windows, Mac, Linux, and Nintendo Switch. But that was six years ago. Has Nintendo snapped up Hollow Knight: Silksong as a Switch 2 launch title? Is it a timed exclusive? Is this all just bonkers behavior from information-starved fans?

We have a few months to find out. In the meantime, check out everything announced at Nintendo’s Switch 2 reveal.

Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN. Find him on Twitter at @wyp100. You can reach Wesley at wesley_yinpoole@ign.com or confidentially at wyp100@proton.me.

As fans eagerly await news of the highly anticipated Hollow Knight: Silksong, the recent announcement of a Nintendo Switch 2 Direct has only fueled the excitement further. With rumors swirling about potential new game announcements and updates on existing titles, the anticipation is palpable.

To add fuel to the fire, a recent tweet from the game’s developer, Team Cherry, featured a tantalizing picture of a chocolate cake with the caption “Just a little something sweet to tide you over until the big reveal #NintendoSwitch2Direct #HollowKnightSilksong.”

While the cake itself may not hold any hidden clues or secrets about the upcoming game, it has certainly stirred up a frenzy among fans who are desperate for any tidbit of information about Hollow Knight: Silksong. Will we finally get a release date? New gameplay footage? Only time will tell, but for now, we’ll just have to savor the delicious anticipation.

Why So Much Demand for Energy?

    AI searches are power hungry

AI Servers are like the superheroes of computing. They are powerful but energy-hungry. They use up to 30 times more energy than Google Search servers and generate a lot of heat. For example, you visit your favorite AI engine and prompt “How much water should a 50-year-old man drink each day and the man works outside and the high temperature this week will exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit and what recommendations do you have for appropriate clothing and respond at a 6th grade reading level.” We jump for joy because the answer is complete and helpful. The technologies that gave you this wonderful answer did much more work. That is why they use up to 30 times more energy than Google Search servers and generate a lot of heat.

    Why is Microsoft Choosing Nuclear?

Green energy, Backbone energy, Wind energy, Solar energy, Consistent energyGreen energy, Backbone energy, Wind energy, Solar energy, Consistent energy

Nuclear is consistent and reliable (not so with wind and solar)

That’s why nuclear supports baseline demand. No matter the weather, environment or time of day, there will always be baseline demand for energy. This baseline demand comes from traffic lights, HVAC systems, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers, lights, computers and media equipment. Let’s also remember the computers you access when you visit websites, perform Google searches and perform AI research are working 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Wind energy is a clean and renewable power source. It doesn’t produce greenhouse gases. The main downside is unpredictability. Wind doesn’t always blow consistently, making it an unreliable sole energy source.

Solar energy is a clean and renewable power source. It doesn’t produce pollution or greenhouse gases, helping to fight climate change. The main downside is that solar power depends on sunlight, so it doesn’t work well at night or on cloudy days.

    Must Keep Their Cool

AI servers generate heat and therefore need strong air conditioning to keep them cool

When air flow and cooling are correctly planned, air movement is highly tweaked. Cold air enters the room and has nowhere to go accept through the racks where it picks up the heat from servers and other IT equipment. Air exits the IT equipment, enters the hot aisle, rises and gets pulled back to the HVAC equipment. Hot air is sucked out of the room, only to be replaced by cold air. The cycle repeats.

If cold air stops flowing through the server racks, servers fail. This is like the air conditioning in your home failing when it is 100 degrees outside. These air conditioners also require tons of energy to help cool the rooms.

Servers need tons of energy to handle AI prompts. They generate immense heat. The data centers where they reside need strong air conditioners to cool the air and keep the servers running. They too need tons of energy. That, my friends, is why AI data centers need nuclear power.
