McConkey is already becoming next great Patriots draft fumble

The Patriots’ decision to trade the pick used to select McConkey and draft Ja’Lynn Polk has not aged well.

The Patriots’ inability to draft impact players has played a critical role in the franchise’s decline from Super Bowl contender to AFC cellar-dwellers.
To further twist the knife, draft busts like N’Keal Harry, Joejuan Williams, and Tyquan Thornton were brought into Foxborough over legitimate star talents like the aforementioned trio of top wideouts.
And now, it looks like Chargers star rookie Ladd McConkey is ready to join that growing list of “what if?” players who slipped through New England’s grasp on draft day.
The shifty Chargers receiver has already developed into a top target for Justin Herbert in Los Angeles — reeling in 69 catches for 960 receiving yards and five touchdowns already in 2024.
McConkey has now recorded at least 50 receiving yards in eight consecutive games — the longest streak for a rookie since Odell Beckham Jr. in 2014.
The sight of McConkey routinely moving the chains with the Chargers is especially painful for New England. It’s not just because of the Patriots’ largely punchless receiving corps, but because Los Angeles drafted McConkey with a second-round pick (No. 34) that was originally held by the Patriots.
The Chargers gained that No. 34 pick as part of an NFL Draft deal with New England, with the Patriots dealing that second-round selection and the 137th pick to Los Angeles in exchange for picks No. 37 and No. 110.
The move allowed the Chargers to take McConkey, while New England selected Ja’Lynn Polk three picks later before adding another wideout in Javon Baker with the 110th pick.
It was a move that quickly devolved into a disaster for New England.
Not only has McConkey thrived right out of the gate for the Chargers, but both Polk and Baker have showcased very little in Foxborough — even with Drake Maye’s emergence at quarterback.
Polk has just 12 catches, equating to just 87 total receiving yards and two touchdowns. Baker has only appeared in eight games for New England, recording zero catches off of just two targets.
McConkey alone recorded six catches for 87 yards in the Chargers’ last game against the Broncos — equaling the receiving yardage from both Polk and Baker all season long.
Even with Jerod Mayo’s emphasis on carving out more playing time for rookies down the stretch, neither Polk nor Baker have factored heavily into New England’s game plans over the last month. Polk played just three total snaps on offense during last Sunday’s road loss to the Bills.
“Like I’ve said before, with him coming in as a rookie, you don’t always light it up in your first year. It takes some time to adjust to the pro game,” Patriots offensive coordinator Alex Van Pelt said of Polk Thursday. “Again, tons of confidence with Polk. Baker as well.
“Excited to get those guys going. If we can get it this year, great. If not, an offseason to help them learn the system. Sometimes, things don’t go your way. You just have to prove yourself out of it. That’s what we continue to encourage with Polk. I’m not down on him at all.”
To make matters worse, the Chargers have also benefited from the fifth-round pick (No. 137 overall) that the Patriots handed them in that swap — selecting cornerback Tarheeb Still out of Maryland. Still has made 10 starts already for the Chargers, recording four interceptions and 10 pass breakups.
Now, the Patriots will have to contend with both McConkey and Still on Saturday when the Chargers come to Gillette Stadium.
“We did some work on him (before the draft),” Jerod Mayo said of McConkey on Thursday. “A guy that can open versus man-to-man coverage. He’s playing well right now. He also does a good job finding space in the zone coverages. He’s definitely a player you’ve got to keep your eye on.”
While the presence of a shifty slot receiver like DeMario Douglas might have made McConkey a less-appealing draft target for New England over Polk, it’s tough to ignore the stats — and considerable upside — that McConkey already boasts on the gridiron.
Even with Maye offering plenty of promise, the Patriots are still on the prowl for a proven, No. 1 receiver. New England has not had a wideout surpass 1,000 yards in a single season since Julian Edelman accomplished the feat in 2019.

McConkey is already becoming next great Patriots draft fumbleThe New England Patriots may have struck out with their latest draft pick, as rookie wide receiver McConkey is already showing signs of being a bust. Despite high hopes for the young player, McConkey has struggled to make an impact on the field and has failed to live up to expectations.
Many fans and analysts are already labeling McConkey as the next great Patriots draft fumble, joining the likes of former first-round busts such as Chad Jackson and Dominique Easley. With each dropped pass and lackluster performance, it becomes increasingly clear that McConkey may not be the player the Patriots were hoping for when they selected him in the draft.
It’s still early in McConkey’s career, and there is always a chance that he could turn things around and prove his critics wrong. However, as of now, it looks like the Patriots may have missed the mark with their latest draft pick. Only time will tell if McConkey can overcome his struggles and make a name for himself in the NFL.

Bears CB Kyler Gordon: Official said he ‘wasn’t even watching’ on overturned fumble recovery TD
Kyler Gordon thought for a moment he’d returned a fumble 62 yards for a touchdown Thursday night.
Officials let him return the ball into the end zone, too, though not all of them actually ran down the field with the Bears cornerback.
Eventually, replay showed that Gordon was down by contact when he recovered the ball. Gordon’s touchdown was instead merely a recovery of Pharaoh Brown’s fumble in the third quarter of an eventual 6-3 loss to the Seahawks.
“Apparently someone touched my leg,” Gordon said.
Gordon claimed one official on the field said he didn’t see what happened.
“I heard one of the refs say, ‘I wasn’t even watching,’” he said. “That actually blew my mind. He said, ‘I don’t know what happened.’”
He suspected while running into the end zone the play might be reversed.
“I thought I’d be able to get a free one,” he said. “I would just go to the house and celebrate. Everyone, the whole crowd got loud.”
It wasn’t to be.
“It’s sad,” he said. “I haven’t had a touchdown since high school.”
In a shocking turn of events, Bears cornerback Kyler Gordon’s potential fumble recovery touchdown was overturned by an official who reportedly admitted that he “wasn’t even watching” the play. This controversial decision has sparked outrage among fans and players alike, with many questioning the integrity of the officiating in the game. Bears DB Kyler Gordon breaks down fumble that could have changed loss against Seahawks
CHICAGO — Kyler Gordon thought he had done something for the first time in seven years: score a touchdown.
It would have been a score that could have changed the fortunes for the final Bears home game .
Late in the third quarter, with the Bears trailing by a field goal, Gordon forced a fumble by Seahawks tight end Pharoah Brown. As the ball was pried free, the third-year defensive back emerged from a scrum with the ball. He ran into the end zone, amidst a flood of confusion from both teams and the officials.
“I heard one of the refs say they weren’t watching,” Gordon said after the game. “That blew my mind. He said, ‘I don’t know what happened.’
“It’s sad, man. I haven’t had a touchdown since high school.”
The referees originally called the play a fumble, recovered by Gordon and taken 62 yards for a touchdown. Replay officials quickly determined that he had been downed by contact in the ruckus following the fumble and the Bears took over at their 38-yard line.
A touchdown would have been the difference between a win and what ended up being a 6-3 defeat — the Bears 10th straight loss of the season.
“Apparently someone touched my leg,” Gordon said. “They got to show me a replay before I believe it.”
The video — which Gordon will surely watch soon — will show he was touched, albeit not intentionally, but nonetheless, contact was made, marking him down.
A Bears offense that struggled the entire night couldn’t make that momentum-shifting play matter. They moved the ball just 1 yard on a 7-play drive that resulted in a punt.
“Yeah, it’s definitely difficult,” Gordon said. “You obviously want to get points off of something like that, or just at all. So yeah, it definitely is difficult, but I can’t control it.”
Bears DB Kyler Gordon breaks down fumble that could have changed loss against SeahawksIn a heartbreaking loss to the Seattle Seahawks, Bears defensive back Kyler Gordon had a chance to make a game-changing play late in the fourth quarter. With the Bears trailing by just a touchdown, Gordon forced a fumble that could have given his team a chance to tie the game and potentially pull off a stunning comeback victory.
Unfortunately, the ball slipped out of Gordon’s grasp as he tried to scoop it up, and the Seahawks were able to recover, sealing the Bears’ fate. In a post-game interview, Gordon broke down the play, expressing his disappointment in not being able to come up with the turnover that could have turned the tide in his team’s favor.
Despite the missed opportunity, Gordon remains optimistic about the Bears’ chances moving forward, vowing to learn from his mistakes and continue to work hard to make plays when his team needs them most. Bears fans can rest assured knowing that Gordon is determined to bounce back from this setback and make a big impact in future games.
