Islanders Gameday News: Tough trip, more injuries, keep going
The Islanders attempt to continue this improbable hot run — seven wins in a row, and 10 in 12 — with even more challenges as they head to south Florida for the back end of a back-to-back. Last night required extra time, but only 33 seconds of it, but they also have the further of injuries to Scott Mayfield and Mat Barzal, both of whom left the win over the Lightning.
Updates on those guys are likely to come shortly before the game; Mayfield’s incident looked like a joint, Barzal’s an impact from a shot block that appeared right above the knee. We’ll see.
One fun wrinkle for tonight is Adam Boqvist, who scored in his debut last night, facing the team that considered him surplus and waived him. I’m sure we’ll see why he’s bounced around in his young career (injuries also a factor) soon enough, but last night at least we saw some of his strengths on display.
Leave First Islanders Goal picks here.
Islanders News
#Isles Patrick Roy: “I’ve never been a part of a team that has had so many injuries. And not just minor ones. Guys missing for a long period of time. Since the start of the year, it’s incredible. But the group is resilient. The group doesn’t look for excuses.”
— Andrew Gross (@AGrossNewsday) February 2, 2025
- About last night: Gutsy win, more injuries. [Isles | LHH | Post]
- This injury update is already outdated given the Tampa game, but Noah Dobson and Ryan Pulock should skate during the 4 Nations break, while Semyon Varlamov is out indefinitely, and Marcus Hogberg should hopefully be ready after the break. Lou Lamoriello also talked about what he said to Isaiah George, all encouraging, in assigning him back to the AHL. [Post | Newsday]
#Isles Jean-Gabriel Pageau with a definite sense of relief after Nikita Kucherov’s tying goal off his ankle sends it to OT. “Yeah, definitely. You can’t make it up, that bounce. I feel like it’s been happening like that for us since the beginning of the year.”
— Andrew Gross (@AGrossNewsday) February 2, 2025
- Previewing tonight: Can they make it eight? They owe the Panthers one, as last meeting in October they blew a 3-0 lead to lose 6-3. [Isles]
- The Skinny: This is the 9th time in club history that the Isles have won at least seven straight…they’ve outscored the opposition 24-9 during this streak. [Isles]
- A storybook start to Tony DeAngelo’s start with the Islanders. [THN]
- And the other storybook start, Boqvist — was the secret wearing gloves labeled for Beauvillier? [THN]
Elsewhere
Saturday’s other NHL scores included the Smurfs losing in J.T. Miller’s return, and tonight’s foe the Panthers winning at home over the Blackhawks.
- MOAR trades. The Stars are dealing with Islanders-like injury blows, so they acquired Cody Ceci and Mikael Granlund from the Sharks for draft picks. [NHL]
- And this is a little old, but shortly after completing the J.T. Miller trade the Canucks flipped the 1st-rounder and some depth to the Penguins for Marcus Pettersson, among other things. [NHL]
- Ryan Hartman, generally seen as a dick, will have an in-person hearing for driving Tom Stutzle’s face into the ice on a faceoff. He seemed bemused when given a match penalty, so either he really is such a dick, or maaaaaybe it was a faceoff move that ended up way worse than he intended? [NHL | Sportsnet]
- Probably the latter. It came as the Senators torched the Wild, 6-0. [Sportsnet]
- Patrik Allvin faced the media on the whole Miller trade and assorted drama. [TSN]
- All about the jerseys for the 4 Nations tournament. [NHL]
The New York Islanders are facing some tough challenges as they hit the road for a difficult stretch of games. In addition to facing tough opponents, the team is also dealing with a growing list of injuries.Despite the setbacks, the Islanders are not backing down. The team is determined to keep pushing forward and fighting for wins. With a never-say-die attitude, the Islanders are ready to face whatever challenges come their way.
Fans can expect a gritty and determined effort from the Islanders as they continue their road trip. Stay tuned for updates on the team’s progress and be sure to show your support as they battle through adversity. Let’s go Islanders! #IslesGameday #IslesNation #KeepPushingForward

Islanders Gameday News: A January to remember
The Islanders are finally back on the road for their third meeting of the month with the Philadelphia Flyers. The teams split the previous two meetings on Long Island, but now the Isles are looking to close out a month in which they’re 8-3 thus far.
Philadelphia is playing the second (but little travel) end of a back-to-back after losing badly in Newark last night, splitting a home-and-home with their neighbors.
The Isles, of course, have a shocking five-game win streak on the line and have won 8 of their last 10. The Flyers are one point ahead of them (but have played three more games) and are one of several teams standing between them and the wild card that they’re not going to get.
First Islanders Goal picks go here.
Islanders News
- Old friend Nick Leddy, on the IR with the Blues, gave Scott Perunovich some encouragement about the opportunity on Long Island. [Newsday]
- Perunovich said all the usual/right things. Patrick Roy says he’ll get some power play time, though of course there were none on Tuesday. [Isles]
- Roy said Perunovich had a really good debut; the newcomer felt he had a slow start but came around with help from teammates. [Post]
- The Skinny: “The Islanders extended the longest active winning streak in the NHL” are not words I expected to read at any point this season. [Isles]
- Momentum, despite the major injuries, has the Isles in a strange place. [Newsday]
- Island Ice podcast: “Did the Isles just save their season?” (No. No, they did not.) [Newsday]
- If you did not access or endure the ESPN broadcast the other night, John Buccigross said Brock Nelson signing with the Wild this summer is “like the worst kept secret in hockey.” [THN]
- Cal Clutterbuck is enjoying his turns on the MSG broadcast, and his former teammates are enjoying the fact it’s something he always said he’d never want to do. (I’ve been enjoying Shannon Hogan razz him a bit on recent broadcasts, too.) [Isles]
- Yesterday in Isles history: That freezing Yankee Stadium game and Trottier hits 1,000 points. [Isles]
Elsewhere
Last night’s NHL scores included the Flyers getting stomped 5-0 by the Hughes Devils.
- The Elias Pettersson rift is hilarious drama that appears beyond fixing, somehow, as management lead Jim Rutherford publicly acknowledges. [Globe & Mail]
- That kind of bombshell reflects just how poorly the Canucks have handled communications about this. [Vancouver Is Awesome]
- J.T. Miller had no comment on all that. [Sportsnet]
- Utah will hold an in-game vote for their name and logo. It’s presumably non-binding, like a Russian election. [NHL]
- After a catastrophic preseason ankle injury, Drew Doughty made his season debut. [NHL]
- Brandon Saad was waived by the Blues, but rather than report to the AHL he agreed to a contract termination with $5 million left on his contract. Thankfully he’s not a defenseman. [NHL]
- After six straight losses, Phillipp Grubauer is placed on waivers by Seattle. [NHL]
- Tough break, Cous’. Nick Cousins is out 6-8 weeks. [TSN]
The New York Islanders are heating up as they head into the final stretch of January, with a record of 6-2-1 so far this month. This hot streak has catapulted them into second place in the Metropolitan Division and has fans buzzing with excitement. In their most recent game, the Islanders dominated the Pittsburgh Penguins with a 4-1 victory, showcasing their depth and skill on both ends of the ice. Goalie Semyon Varlamov was a standout player, making crucial saves to keep the Penguins at bay and secure the win.
The team’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, with captain Anders Lee leading the way with 10 goals in January. The power play unit has also been clicking, converting on multiple opportunities to give the Islanders an edge in close games.
As the Islanders gear up for their upcoming matchups against division rivals, including the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers, they are looking to continue their winning ways and solidify their position in the standings.
With their strong play in January, the Islanders are proving that they are a force to be reckoned with in the Eastern Conference. Fans are hopeful that this success will continue into the second half of the season and potentially lead to a deep playoff run.
Stay tuned for more Islanders gameday news as they look to make January a month to remember. Let’s go Islanders!

GAMEDAY: Jets at Bruins | Winnipeg Jets
BOSTON – Just 55 minutes away from Boston’s TD Garden is Providence College, the place where Parker Ford spent four seasons as a member of the Friars in the NCAA.
So perhaps it’s fitting that the product of Wakefield, Rhode Island makes his National Hockey League debut on Thursday when the Winnipeg Jets take on the Boston Bruins.
“A lot of emotions, for sure,” said Ford, who got the call from the Jets during a pre-game nap in Chicago with the Manitoba Moose.
“I thought it was my alarm, but it was the call. Yeah, just pure joy in the moment.”
The 24-year-old signed a two-year entry-level contract with the Jets after the 2022-23 NCAA campaign ended, and got into eight regular season games with the Manitoba Moose – along with five playoff games – that spring.
His American Hockey League resume shows 116 games of experience along with 41 goals and 94 points. He’s played in six NHL preseason games combined in the last two years and will have several people in attendance for his first game.
“My whole family, mom, dad, sister, her boyfriend, a couple of friends, my girlfriend and her whole family, they’re from Boston,” said Ford. “A couple of fans in the stands and hopefully a couple some more watching at home.”
Ford leads the Moose in goals with 11 and has scored seven times in the last nine games. His opportunity comes after Morgan Barron was placed on injured reserve retroactive to January 28, the night the Jets opened a three-game road trip with a 4-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens.
“(Barron) is out now week-to-week. He got hurt there right at the end of the game against Montreal. So another one down,” said Jets head coach Scott Arniel. “Looking at (Ford), it keeps it simple in a sense with him going in on the right side with (David Gustafsson) and (Alex Iafallo), Al will move over to the left. A Rhode Island kid here, bring him in, give him a chance to play here, it’s a good opportunity for him.”
With Barron out and Ford in, the Jets line rushes looked like this at the morning skate:
Connor-Scheifele-Vilardi
Perfetti-Namestnikov-Ehlers
Niederreiter-Kupari-Appleton
Ford-Gustafsson-Iafallo
Morrissey-DeMelo
Samberg-Pionk
Stanley-Miller
While the Jets are riding a four-game win streak coming into the season series finale with the Bruins, their opponents are looking for a bounce back effort – in two ways.
First, it was the Jets that handed the Bruins an 8-1 defeat at Canada Life Centre back on December 10. Second, Boston is coming off a 7-2 loss in Buffalo on Tuesday, a night that saw both Tage Thompson and JJ Peterka record hat tricks.
“They obviously didn’t have a good result the other day. Their last memory of us is an 8-1 game,” said Cole Perfetti. “They’re going to be probably pretty pissed off and going to be coming at us, so we’re expecting a good push from them, a good first period, and we’re going to try to match that. I think if we can do that we’ll be in good shape. We’re expecting it. Our first period is going to be huge tonight.”
Like the Jets – who are without Adam Lowry for a fifth straight game to go along with Barron’s injury – the Bruins are also banged up, especially on their blue line.
Charlie McAvoy, Hampus Lindholm, and Brandon Carlo all missed the game against Buffalo. Two of them – McAvoy and Carlo – will return tonight, and will try to help the Bruins win their fifth straight on home ice.
“For us, it’s about getting to Jet hockey as fast as possible,” said Arniel. “They’re going to look to be a lot better, so we’ve got to make sure that we’re ready to go off the drop. I didn’t like the way we started in Montreal, so hopefully we don’t repeat that. We can come out a lot stronger and kind of get them back on their heels.”
A Winnipeg victory guarantees a winning road trip, but it would also make a milestone night in Ford’s career even better. He vividly remembers watching the Bruins – the team he grew up cheering for – win the Stanley Cup in 2011.
To experience his first NHL game against the very team he grew up cheering for is a dream come true.
“It’s a surreal moment stepping out there,” Ford said. “It’s super special. I wasn’t sure I was coming here, but when I heard on the call, I was smiling ear to ear, for sure.”
Puck drop is set for 6 pm CT.
It’s game day for the Winnipeg Jets as they face off against the Boston Bruins! The Jets are looking to continue their hot streak and secure another win on the road. With their strong offense and solid defense, they are sure to give the Bruins a run for their money. The Bruins, on the other hand, are a tough opponent with a talented roster and a strong home record. This game is sure to be a nail-biter as both teams battle it out for the win.
Be sure to tune in and catch all the action as the Jets take on the Bruins in what promises to be an exciting and competitive game. Let’s go Jets! #WinnipegJets #Gameday #NHL #GoJetsGo

Gameday 52: Florida Panthers vs Los Angeles Kings
Graphic design: Francisco Oporta
The Florida Panthers (29-19-3) are back from the left coast and will host the Los Angeles Kings (26-15-6) tonight to open a three-game homestand at Amerant Bank Arena.
Florida had to settle for a 2-2 road trip after getting stymied by Adin Hill and the Vegas Golden Knights in Sunday night’s 4-1 loss at T-Mobile Arena. Anton Lundell was the only Cat able to light the lamp as the Panthers offensive struggles reared their ugly head again, wasting another good start from Spencer Knight.
After edging the Panthers 2-1 at Crypto.com Arena on January 22, the Kings, who are in the midst of a five-game road trip, have dropped consecutive games to the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings. Kevin Fiala and Quinton Byfield scored late in the first period, but Los Angeles surrendered the game’s last five goals at Little Caesars Arena. Despite the little swoon, the Kings lead over the Calgary Flames for third place in the Pacific Division remains at three points.

Graphic design: Francisco Oporta
The Florida Panthers (28-18-3) are in the Bay Area to pay their only visit this season to the slumping San Jose Sharks (14-31-6) at SAP Center.
Florida’s scoring woes resurfaced in Wednesday night’s frustrating 2-1 loss to the Los Angeles Kings in game two of the four-game trek west. Evan Rodrigues put the Cats ahead with a power-play marker 7:27 into the second period, but that would be the only puck they’d get past Darcy Kuemper. Spencer Knight continued his recent run of good play, making 26 saves. Matthew Tkachuk has gone nine games without a goal. Aleksander Barkov has yet to score in 2025. PoMo, we have a problem, and keeping those two on the same line is unlikely to solve it.
The Sharks finished up a home-and-home against the Nashville Predators in San Jose on Thursday that ended in a 6-5 defeat. The loss extended the Sharks losing streak to five games. They have given up a whopping 27 goals during that span. Mikael Granlund leads the team in scoring with 43 points.
