Gates Foundation
Seed money
The Foundation’s initial five-year pledge of US$ 750 million in 1999 provided the seed money to launch Gavi. Since then, additional pledges have brought the Foundation’s total commitment to Gavi to date to over US$ 4 billion.
By supporting Gavi, the Foundation – which has a permanent seat on the Gavi Board – aims to accelerate access of developing countries to vaccines and support research into health solutions for these countries that are effective, affordable and sustainable.
In 2009, Bill Gates expressed the hope that the new rotavirus vaccine could reach half the children who needed it within six years.
More than half of all Gavi-supported countries have introduced the rotavirus vaccine and more than three-quarters have included pneumococcal vaccine, which protects against the main cause of pneumonia, into their immunisation programmes.
Vaccine market shaping
The Gates Foundation plays both a technical and financial role in the Vaccine Alliance’s efforts to shape vaccine markets. It helps to gather data to inform our decision making and provides financial support for market investments.
The Foundation invests in activities ranging from vaccine discovery through development to delivery, and encourages product innovation and new entrants into the market.

The Forbes 2024 Rich List holds a list of billionaires who have retained a spot since 2000, however a reshuffle in their ranks places one man in third place thanks to his growing fortune.
The wealthiest people on the planet today remain largely the same as 20 years ago, however the top three spots have changed.
Elon Musk holds first place with Jeff Bezos in second despite neither of them being in the top 20 less than 25 years ago.
Third place goes to billionaire Larry Ellison who has sat firmly in one of the top 20 spots on the list for the past two decades, despite being less in the spotlight than those in first and second place.
His overall net worth is a staggering $217.2 billion (£173.6billion).
Larry Ellison is chairman, chief technology officer and cofounder of software giant Oracle.
Despite giving up the role of CEO in 2014 after 37 years at the helm, he still owns roughly 40% of the company.
Mr Ellison, 80, founded Oracle in 1977. The company specialises in IT, offering business-oriented products and services.
It ranks as the world’s largest database management company, according to its website.
The incredible growth of Oracle can be largely attributed to acquisitions of software companies – the biggest was $28.3 billion (£22.6bn) for electronic health records company Cerner in 2021.
The billionaire has had four previous marriages before his current partner, having two children, David and Megan, with his third wife Barbara Boothe.
After stepping down as CEO, Mr Ellison moved permanently from the United States to the Hawaiian island Lanai, which he bought nearly all of in 2012 for $300 million (£238 million).
Following this, Mr Ellison sat on his fellow Forbes list billionaire’s company board, Tesla, from December 2018 to August 2022.
The Oracle founder owned 45 million split-adjusted shares in Elon Musk’s company before stepping down as a director.
Mr Musk has sat at the top of Forbes Rich List for a second year in a row with a net worth of $449.6 billion (£359.5bn). Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, stands at $240.5 billion (£192.2bn).
In a surprising turn of events, the world’s third-richest man has surpassed the wealth of renowned billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill Gates. The mysterious individual, whose identity remains unknown, has amassed a fortune that rivals even the most successful tycoons in the world. With a net worth that exceeds the combined wealth of Buffet and Gates, this enigmatic figure has taken the financial world by storm. Speculation runs rampant as to how this individual managed to achieve such staggering wealth, with some attributing it to shrewd investments and others to sheer luck.
Regardless of the source of their wealth, one thing is clear: the world’s third-richest person is a force to be reckoned with in the world of finance. As they continue to climb the ranks of the world’s wealthiest individuals, all eyes are on this mysterious billionaire to see what they will do next. Stay tuned for more updates on this unprecedented financial success story.

Forbidden Gates: How Genetics, Robotics, Artificial Intelligence, and Synthetic Biology are Shaping the FutureThe integration of genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence, and synthetic biology is ushering in a new era of technological advancement and innovation. However, with these advancements come ethical dilemmas and concerns about the potential consequences of playing with the building blocks of life.
In the realm of genetics, the ability to manipulate DNA has opened up new possibilities for curing diseases and enhancing human capabilities. But the idea of designer babies and genetic engineering raises questions about the ethics of altering the very essence of what it means to be human.
Robotics and artificial intelligence have also made significant strides in recent years, with machines becoming increasingly capable of performing tasks once thought to be the sole domain of humans. While the potential benefits of automation are vast, there are also concerns about job displacement and the implications of creating machines that are smarter than us.
Synthetic biology, the field of creating new biological systems and organisms, has the potential to revolutionize medicine, agriculture, and energy production. But the ability to design life from scratch raises questions about the boundaries between the natural and the artificial, and the potential consequences of unleashing new forms of life into the world.
As we stand on the brink of a technological revolution, it is crucial that we consider the ethical implications of our actions and strive to ensure that these powerful technologies are used for the greater good. By understanding the potential risks and benefits of genetics, robotics, artificial intelligence, and synthetic biology, we can navigate the forbidden gates of innovation with wisdom and foresight.
