[Giannis Kemmos/ Facebook]
In one of the largest demonstrations in recent years at Syntagma Square in Athens, tens of thousands of people gathered on Sunday to demand justice for the Tempe train disaster. The protest was joined by 97 cities across Greece and 13 cities internationally, unified under the slogan “I Have No Oxygen.”
The protests were spurred by the release of a chilling audio recording suggesting that dozens of victims may have died as a result of a fire of unknown origin, rather than the collision itself, during the February 2023 disaster. The government’s handling of the investigation has come under intense scrutiny, with reports of missing evidence and surveillance footage raising serious questions.
Demonstrators at Syntagma Square continued to arrive well after the official start time of 12 p.m., as announced by the association of victims’ families. By noon, the area in front of the Parliament building on Vasilissis Amalias Avenue was already packed with people.
The crowd was diverse, reflecting no specific ideological affiliations, and the protest was largely silent, punctuated occasionally by chants of “Murderers! Murderers!” The sheer density of the crowd made movement nearly impossible, and at one point, a woman fainted.
In a symbolic act, protesters used red paint to write the names of the deceased in front of the Greek Parliament.
The unexpectedly large turnout caught police unprepared, leading to severe traffic congestion even in areas far from Syntagma Square. Around 2 p.m., clashes broke out between police and a group of unknown individuals, prompting officers to use tear gas to disperse the crowd.
Maria Karystianou, representing the association of families of Tempe victims, addressed the gathering, expressing gratitude to the attendees. She spoke of a “mafia-style operation to cover up the truth” and presented a detailed timeline of events following the disaster.
“We want to ensure that no crime goes unpunished,” she said, concluding with, “Thank you all. We will succeed.”
Dimitris Vervesos, president of the Athens Bar Association, also spoke to the crowd, stating: “We are here searching for oxygen. We are here to leave behind the era of cover-ups.”
Large crowds were also recorded in Thessaloniki, Crete, Larissa, Nafplio, Patra, and many other Greek cities.
Opposition parties lent their support to the protests, issuing strong statements against the government and urging citizens to join the demonstrations.
The leaked audio evidence suggested that approximately 30 of the 57 victims were still alive immediately after the Thessaloniki-bound intercity passenger train collided head-on with a freight train traveling in the opposite direction on the same line.
Reports indicate that these victims likely died later, possibly from asphyxiation or burns, as the collision triggered a massive explosion and fire. Experts hired by the victims’ families suggest that the freight train may have been carrying flammable materials that were not disclosed in the cargo report, adding further weight to the calls for a thorough investigation.
Thousands of concerned citizens gathered in cities across Greece to demand justice for the victims of the recent Tempe disaster. The tragic event, which claimed the lives of dozens of people, has sparked outrage and disbelief among the Greek population.Protesters took to the streets holding signs and chanting slogans calling for accountability and transparency in the investigation of the disaster. Many are demanding answers as to how such a catastrophic event could have occurred and are calling for those responsible to be held accountable.
The gathering of thousands of people in cities such as Athens, Thessaloniki, and Patras demonstrates the widespread impact of the Tempe disaster and the deep sense of grief and anger felt by the Greek people. The calls for justice are loud and clear, and the government is facing mounting pressure to take action and ensure that such a tragedy never happens again.
As the investigation into the Tempe disaster continues, the voices of the protesters will be a powerful reminder of the importance of justice and accountability in the face of such a devastating event. The people of Greece will not rest until those responsible are brought to justice and the victims are honored and remembered.

Hong Kong welcomes 2025 as hundreds of thousands gather for harbour fireworks
Hundreds of thousands of revellers packed both sides of Hong Kong’s Victoria Harbour for a fireworks display on New Year’s Eve, as they expressed hopes for health and happiness in 2025.
By 9pm, celebrations across the city had drawn more than 143,000 visitors, of whom 108,000, or 75 per cent, were from mainland China. The number of mainland visitors was only about half of the 195,888 for the previous New Year’s Eve, a Sunday, when 227,000 non-local arrivals were recorded.
Themed “The Symphony of Happiness”, the countdown celebration began at 11pm with four sets of fireworks and a star-studded musical and dance performance, before the main 12-minute display started at midnight.
From 11pm, fireworks in the shape of “shooting stars” were launched every 15 minutes from three buildings on Hong Kong Island, leaving revellers in awe.
Cantopop boy band Mirror, girl group Collar and Canadian pop music duo Crash Adams performed on the viewing deck of the Cultural Centre.
The fireworks, choreographed by Liu Lin, who oversaw the display for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, took inspiration from the five natural elements in Chinese culture – fire, earth, wood, water and metal.
Authorities earlier predicted 380,000 people would gather in Tsim Sha Tsui for the show, a crowd similar in size to last year’s.
As the clock struck midnight, Hong Kong welcomed 2025 in spectacular fashion as hundreds of thousands of people gathered along the harbour to watch the dazzling fireworks display. The iconic skyline was illuminated with bursts of color and light, creating a breathtaking backdrop for the celebration. Families, friends, and tourists alike came together to witness the spectacular show and usher in the new year with joy and excitement.
As the fireworks lit up the night sky, cheers and applause filled the air, creating a festive atmosphere that was truly unforgettable. The sound of laughter and music echoed through the streets as people danced and celebrated the start of a new year.
The event was not only a time for revelry, but also a moment to reflect on the past year and look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lay ahead. With hope and optimism in their hearts, the people of Hong Kong welcomed 2025 with open arms and a sense of unity.
As the last remnants of the fireworks faded away, the city was left aglow with a sense of promise and possibility. The new year had arrived, and Hong Kong was ready to embrace it with all the energy and enthusiasm it could muster.
Here’s to a bright and prosperous 2025 for the vibrant city of Hong Kong! Happy New Year!

Master Data Management (MDM) is crucial for organizations looking to streamline data management processes, improve data quality, and achieve a single, accurate view of their data assets. To successfully implement an MDM solution, it is essential to gather, document, and manage requirements effectively from inception through implementation. Here is a proven approach to ensure the success of your MDM project:1. Define the business objectives: Start by clearly defining the business objectives and goals of the MDM solution. Understand the specific challenges and pain points that the organization is facing related to data management and identify how MDM can help address these issues.
2. Identify stakeholders: Identify key stakeholders from various departments within the organization who will be impacted by the MDM solution. Engage with these stakeholders early on to gather their input and requirements for the solution.
3. Conduct a current state assessment: Evaluate the current state of data management within the organization to identify existing data sources, data quality issues, data governance practices, and data integration challenges. This will provide valuable insights into the requirements for the MDM solution.
4. Define use cases: Work with stakeholders to define specific use cases and scenarios that the MDM solution should support. This will help prioritize requirements and ensure that the solution meets the needs of the business.
5. Document requirements: Document all requirements for the MDM solution in a detailed requirements document. Include functional requirements, non-functional requirements, data governance requirements, data quality requirements, integration requirements, and any other specific requirements identified during the assessment phase.
6. Prioritize requirements: Prioritize requirements based on their importance to the business objectives and goals. Use techniques such as MoSCoW prioritization to categorize requirements as “Must-haves,” “Should-haves,” “Could-haves,” and “Won’t-haves.”
7. Create a roadmap: Develop a roadmap for the MDM solution implementation, outlining the key milestones, deliverables, and timelines for the project. Ensure that the roadmap aligns with the business objectives and priorities identified earlier.
8. Manage requirements changes: Establish a process for managing changes to requirements throughout the project lifecycle. Ensure that any changes are properly documented, reviewed, and approved by stakeholders to maintain alignment with the project’s goals.
By following this proven approach for gathering, documenting, and managing requirements for an MDM solution, organizations can ensure the success of their MDM projects and achieve tangible benefits in terms of data quality, data governance, and operational efficiency.
