  • Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz lead U.S. into United Cup semifinals again

Team USA is back into the United Cup semifinals. The Americans, the 2023 tournament champions, swept China 3-0 on New Year’s Day in Perth on the strength of two straight-sets wins by Top 5-ranked duo of Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz.

World No. 3 Gauff kicked things off with a gritty 7-6(4), 6-2 win over Zhang Shuai, before Fritz clinched the tie with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Zhang Zhizhen. Doubles players Desirae Krawczyk and Robert Galloway finished off the sweep with a 6-3, 6-7(1), 10-3 win over Zhang Shuai and Sun Fajing in mixed doubles.

Gauff came from a break down three times in the first set against Zhang Shuai, a former Top 30 player who famously ended a 24-match losing streak last fall to revitalize her career. But after the veteran failed to serve out the first set at 6-5, Gauff wrestled momentum away with a lightning-quick start to the tiebreak. She won five of the first six points en route to sealing it, and never trailed in the second set after pushing out to a 3-0 lead.

“Shuai was playing amazing tennis out there. I was literally on the ground for most of the match. The harder I hit, the harder she was hitting,” Gauff said of the 35-year-old veteran, who stepped in to play singles after group-stage hero Gao Xinyu—who herself was a replacement for Zheng Qinwen—was forced out with injury.

“I felt like I couldn’t get her on defense. She was playing so aggressive on me and I felt like I had to go more on my second serves, which brought in more double faults. But if I just put it in it was a return winner so I had to take my chances.”

In a thrilling display of talent and determination, rising tennis stars Coco Gauff and Taylor Fritz have once again led the United States into the United Cup semifinals. The dynamic duo showcased their skills and teamwork as they secured crucial victories for Team USA, solidifying their position as key players in the tournament.

Gauff, known for her powerful serves and fearless play on the court, delivered clutch performances to help propel the team to victory. Meanwhile, Fritz’s steady play and strategic approach proved invaluable in securing crucial points for the team.

With their impressive performances, Gauff and Fritz have once again proven themselves as formidable competitors on the international stage. As they continue to lead the charge for Team USA, fans can’t help but be excited for what the future holds for these two talented young players.

Stay tuned as Gauff, Fritz, and the rest of Team USA look to make a strong push for the United Cup title in the upcoming semifinals. Let’s go, Team USA! #UnitedCup #TeamUSA #CocoGauff #TaylorFritz

Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff had it all figured out Tuesday, when they guided USA back to the United Cup quarter-finals with a win against Croatia.

The No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings Fritz eased to a 6-3, 6-2 win over Borna Coric in Perth, ensuring USA top Group A and qualify for the quarter-finals. Fritz had lost each of his four previous Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings with Coric, but adjusted well to swing the tie against Croatia in USA’s favour.

Gauff then notched a dominant win over Donna Vekic to wrap up the tie before teaming up with Fritz to secure their second mixed doubles triumph of the week.

“I feel like I’m a completely different player from when we have played in the past,” said Fritz of his singles win. “It’s great to get that win, especially after the other day [where I was] a set and break up [against Auger-Aliassime].”

Coric, the former No. 12 in the PIF ATP Rankings, caused Fritz trouble in the early stages with the variety he was injecting into the contest. Yet the big-hitting American bided his time and carved out the only break point of the first set in a crucial seventh game, which he converted by inserting some variety of his own. A chipped return allowed himself into the point to force an error and serve out the opener.

Fritz, the reigning US Open and Nitto ATP Finals runner-up, asserted his dominance in the second set. In the 2024 season, the 27-year-old held a 44-2 win-loss record when taking the first set, and appeared in no mood to let that run of form drop when he raced to a 4-0 lead with a double break.

Coric forged a miraculous comeback win over Felix Auger-Aliassime on Saturday, and he started to ignite hope into the Croatian fans inside RAC Arena right at the death. With Fritz serving for the match, Coric carved out his first two break points of the match, but American swiftly responded to seal the one-hour, 31-minute win.

The last time Gauff faced Donna Vekic with both players representing their respective nations, it was the Croatian who scored an upset victory on her way to winning the silver medal at the Paris Olympics in August.

Yet there was no such surprise in Perth: Gauff was a comprehensive 6-4, 6-2 winner over Vekic to clinch the Americans’ second victory in as many round-robin ties at the United Cup.

“I’m really happy with how I played today,” Gauff said post-match. “She’s a great player, and the Olympics loss hurt, so I definitely was thinking about it today as motivation to do better.

After quickly establishing a 4-1 lead to start the match, Gauff cooled off any hopes Vekic had for a comeback under the heat of the midday sun inside RAC Arena by winning eight of the last 11 games. The American emphatically rounded into form on serve in the second set, dropping just four points behind her delivery in all.

But the 1-hour and 29-minute victory was window dressing for Team USA as far as its immediate future prospects in the competition was concerned, as Taylor Fritz’s earlier 6-3, 6-2 win over Borna Coric already ensured that the 2023 United Cup champions qualified for the quarterfinals as Group A winners, where they will face China.

Fritz and Gauff then sealed a 3-0 win for USA with their 6-2, 6-3 victory over Ivan Dodig and Petra Marcinko. The Americans saved each of the three break points they faced, according to Infosys ATP Stats, and broke their opponents serve on four occasions.

In a thrilling display of talent and determination, Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff have secured a spot in the quarterfinals of the United Cup for Team USA. Both players put on impressive performances to help their team advance in the prestigious tournament.

Fritz showcased his powerful serves and aggressive play to defeat his opponent and secure a crucial win for Team USA. Gauff, on the other hand, displayed her incredible speed and shot-making abilities to dominate her match and help her team secure the victory.

With their impressive performances, Fritz and Gauff have proven themselves to be valuable assets to Team USA and have shown that they have what it takes to compete at the highest level. Fans can expect more thrilling matches from these two talented players as they continue to represent their country in the United Cup.

Congratulations to Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff for their outstanding performances and for helping Team USA secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the United Cup! Let’s continue to cheer them on as they strive for success in the tournament. #TeamUSA #UnitedCup #TaylorFritz #CocoGauff #Tennis

Gauff and Fritz deliver late-night victory to edge Canada at United Cup

Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff teamed up Sunday night to guide Team USA through an exhilarating United Cup tie against Canada in Group A.

In a winner-takes-all mixed doubles rubber, the Americans showed their grit with a hard-fought 7-6(2), 7-5 victory over Felix Auger-Aliassime and Leylah Fernandez, sealing a 2-1 victory. Fritz and Gauff let slip a break lead in both sets but recovered to seal victory at 12:54 a.m. in Perth.

“Really happy with how we played today in the mixed,” Gauff said. “I felt we got better the longer the match went. We had a lot of chances and finally we were able to stick ’em when it mattered.”

United Cup: Scores | Draws | Order of Play

Despite defeat, Fernandez showed her serving qualities against the big-hitting Fritz on several occasions. The 22-year-old saved three break points on her serve in the first set but eventually came undone by the Americans with a clinical tiebreak performance. In the second set, Fritz and Gauff’s resilience ultimately prevailed as they dug deep from 0/30 in the 12th game to clinch the tie.

Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez had the opportunity to top Group A and qualify for the quarterfinals with a win but will have to wait until the outcome of the Unites States’ matchup against Croatia on Tuesday to learn their county’s fate.

Auger-Aliassime had earlier leveled the tie and kept Canada alive with a comeback victory over Fritz, his first win against the American after three Lexus ATP Head2Head meetings.

Trailing a set and a break, the 24-year-old came up with some redline tennis to sink Taylor Fritz 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 and send the tie to a live mixed doubles rubber. Having been unable to break Fritz’s serve in the seven sets they had contested going into the second, Auger-Aliassime struck twice in two games from 4-5 down to spark life into the crowd inside RAC Arena.

“It was a crazy night of tennis so far, it’s not over,” said Auger-Aliassime, referring to the deciding mixed doubles to come.

For Gauff, she picked up right where she left off last season by defeating Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 to put the U.S. up 1-0. In the first career meeting between the two young stars, the World No. 3 and WTA Finals champion unleashed her power and speed to secure a physical win.

“I’m super happy with how I played, and super happy to get a point on the board for my team,” Gauff said. “I knew I was going to have to run a lot. Leylah can hit some crazy angles, so I was just trying my best to hit the best possible shot on them.”

Highlights: Gauff beats Fernandez to notch first win of new season

Gauff’s court coverage, counterpunching, and growing confidence in her baseline power game proved too much for the similarly offensive-minded Fernandez. The 31st-ranked Canadian opened her United Cup with an upset win over Croatia’s Donna Vekic on Day 1.

In a thrilling late-night showdown at the United Cup, rising stars Cori “Coco” Gauff and Taylor Fritz delivered a clutch victory to edge out Canada in a nail-biting match.

The dynamic duo of Gauff and Fritz showcased their skill and determination as they took on the Canadian team in a high-stakes doubles match. Despite facing tough competition, the young American players remained calm under pressure and executed their game plan flawlessly.

With the match tied and tensions running high, Gauff and Fritz dug deep and found another gear to secure the victory for Team USA. Their resilience and teamwork were on full display as they fought tooth and nail for every point, ultimately coming out on top in a thrilling finish.

The win not only propelled Team USA to victory over Canada but also served as a testament to Gauff and Fritz’s potential as future stars in the world of tennis. Their late-night heroics will surely be remembered as a defining moment in this year’s United Cup, showcasing the next generation of American talent.

As the tournament continues, all eyes will be on Gauff and Fritz as they look to build on this momentum and lead Team USA to further success. Their late-night victory was a shining example of skill, determination, and teamwork, and serves as a reminder of the endless possibilities that lie ahead for these young phenoms.

Lance Bass seemed like the safest human in the world,” Collins, 31, said of her affinity for the ‘NSync member.

Gauff was born in March 2004, more than three years after the release of ‘NSync’s last studio album, Celebrity. Bass was a founding member of the iconic boy band alongside Justin Timberlake, Chris Kirkpatrick, Joey Fatone and JC Chasez

When it came time for Gauff to answer the question herself, the 2023 US Open champion got bashful.

“I don’t want to say my first celebrity crush because I know him now,” Gauff said.

The room erupted in laughter and Gauff was asked, “Are you dating him?”

“No, I’m not dating him,” Gauff said, before revealing her answer to be actor Michael B. Jordan. “I love that man,” she gushed.

As for her actual love life, Gauff posted an Instagram photo with her rumored boyfriend, Jalen Sera, in November.

Gauff shared a series of photos from the Camp Flog Gnaw Music Festival in Los Angeles, including one of her and Sera, 22, standing side-by-side. While Gauff didn’t confirm their relationship, rumors about the pair have swirled since 2023, and they often exchange flirty Instagram comments with each other.

Gauff discussed her boyfriend with Time magazine in April, calling their connection her “first real relationship.”

  • Gauff, U.S. take on formidable Canada squad

Gauff, U.S. take on formidable Canada squad

This was Coco Gauff’s first Christmas away from her Florida home, but the cuddly quokkas helped ease the sting.

Perhaps not as popular as their marsupial cousins — koalas, kangaroos and wallabies — the quokkas of Rottnest Island are cat-sized and pretty darn cute. Only a ferry ride (or a quicker lift by helicopter) away from Perth, the 20-year-old Gauff visited them along with her parents and younger brothers Codey and Cameron in advance of Team USA’s opening United Cup match on Sunday against 1-0 Canada.

“It’s great to bring my family here,” Gauff told Tennis Australia. “They’re on Christmas break, so for them to be able to see a different part of the world is cool.”

    United Cup: ScoresDrawsOrder of Play

What’s really cool is that Gauff’s squad is the top seed in the 18-team, mixed-gender event. She and compatriot Taylor Fritz are the only two singles players from the same nation to be ranked among the PIF Top 10.

Fritz was on board for the inaugural United Cup in 2023, when the United States took the title with a team that also featured Jessica Pegula, Madison Keys and Frances Tiafoe. The Americans won 13 of their final 14 matches — against Great Britain, Poland and Italy — and Fritz went 7-for-8.

“It’s actually my third time in Perth as I played ATP Cup here in 2020, so I’m pretty familiar with the city, and I’m happy to be back in Perth,” Fritz said. “Coco and I got some experience playing mixed doubles at the Olympics, so hopefully that will help us.”

And they’re both coming off torrid finishes in 2024. Fritz reached the ATP Finals championship match before falling to Jannik Sinner. Gauff defeated Zheng Qinwen in the three-hour barnburner championship match at the WTA Finals in Riyadh.

After a few weeks off, Fritz put in training blocks in Miami and Los Angeles. He’s 27 now and, believe it or not, it’s his 11th season as a professional.

“As I’ve gotten a bit older, it’s not so much about absolutely killing myself as much as I can in the offseason,” the World No.4 said. “It’s about training but still feeling recharged and ready to go and very motivated to come back out and be ready to play in Australia.

I feel like it’s kind of about finding the balance between working as much as I can but still not almost burning myself out.”

Gauff, meanwhile, hopes to repeat her success last year Down Under — and maybe exceed it. She won the title in Auckland and advanced to the semifinals of the Australian Open before falling to eventual champion Aryna Sabalenka. The scoreline was 7-6 (2), 6-4.

Why did she decide to play United Cup for the first time?

“I wanted to play a higher level of competition and also a team competition,” Gauff said. “I had a lot of fun with the Olympics. The season’s already so much by ourselves that it’s nice to mix it up.”

Here’s a brief look at Sunday’s matches — four United Cup ties and eight main-draw collisions in Brisbane.

    Sydney

Group B: Czech Republic vs. Norway

    Start time: (10:30 a.m. local, 6:30 p.m. ET)

[8] Karolina Muchova (CZE) vs [15] Malene Helgo (NOR)
[8] Tomas Machac (CZE) vs [15] Casper Ruud (NOR)
[8] Karolina Muchova (CZE) / Tomas Machac (CZE) vs [15] Ulrikke Eikeri (NOR) / Casper Ruud (NOR)

Daniel Vacek was a formidable pro, winning 25 doubles titles — including three Grand Slams with partner Yevgeny Kafelnikov. The Czech Republic captain says watching from the sidelines is hard on the nerves.

“It’s much more difficult to be a captain or coach than a player because you have to deal sometimes with very unstable individuals,” Vacek told reporters, laughing as he said it. “No, it’s completely different. It’s very nice to have the young players around, and it’s very nice that I can pass on some of the experiences that I have managed to get over the years.”

Muchova, who has struggled with injuries for much of her career, finally got healthy midway through 2024 after nine months away from tennis — and the results were spectacular. She got to the final in Palermo, and then won 14 of her last 17 matches, at the US Open, the Beijing 1000 and Ningbo.

Muchova and Helgo have never played.

Ruud is sitting at No.6 in the world — one of the four ATP Tour Top 10 playing United Cup — and coming off a sturdy 51-25 season. He won titles in Geneva and Barcelona and beat Carlos Alcaraz on the way to the semifinals at the Nitto ATP Finals. His victim in the Geneva final? Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic, but only by a 7-5 6-3 score. Ruud leads the head-to-head 2-0.

    Group D: Italy vs. Switzerland

    Start time: (5:30 p.m. local, 1:30 a.m. ET)

[4] Flavio Cobolli (ITA) vs [16] Dominic Stricker (SUI)
[4] Jasmine Paolini (ITA) vs [16] Belinda Bencic (SUI)
[4] Sara Errani (ITA) / Andrea Vavassori (ITA) vs [16] Belinda Bencic (SUI) / Dominic Stricker (SUI)

Italy is on a roll in team competition.

The women won the Billie Jean King Cup title a little over one month ago in Malaga, Spain, and then the men followed through by taking the Davis Cup crown.

Does Italy’s United Cup captain feel pressure to complete the triple crown?

“No,” said Renzo Furlan. “Every competition is different. We are very happy for what we did in 2024, and we are motivated to do well day by day. We’ll see what’s going on.”

What’s going on is Paolini. She’s 0-2 against Bencic, but that was before the 28-year-old had the season of her life, reaching the finals at Roland Garros and Wimbledon and finishing the year at No.4 — 26 spots higher than her previous year-end best.

The men’s match features Flavio Cobolli and Dominic Stricker, at 22, two of the more dynamic young players. In fact, their only meeting came two years ago at the ATP Tour’s Next Gen Finals, with the Italian coming out on top.

“I think we can do great things in this competition,” Cobolli said. “We are happy to start. We are also ready to go.”

So is Switzerland after defeating France 2-1 on Saturday. Bencic and Stricker won the decisive mixed doubles match.

“We really came out firing,” Bencic said. “We played the first time together, but I really felt like the vibes were there, we were understanding each other on the court.”

    Perth

    Group E: Germany vs. Brazil

    Start time: (10 a.m. local, 9 p.m. ET)

[11] Laura Siegemund (GER) vs [13] Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA)
[11] Alexander Zverev (GER) vs [13] Thiago Monteiro (BRA)
[11] Laura Siegemund (GER) / Alexander Zverev (GER) vs [13] Beatriz Haddad Maia (BRA) / Rafael Matos (BRA)

Seeded No.16 out of 18 teams a year ago, Germany raced through the field and took the second edition of the United Cup. It was a stunning upset, led by Zverev, who won eight of 10 matches.

And while three-time Grand Slam champion Angelique Kerber played the singles matches, it was Laura Siegemund who was the biggest contributor on the women’s side, teaming with Zverev to win their last three mixed matches — against Greece, Australia and, in the finals, Italy.

    Beatriz Haddad Maia

    Will Russell/Getty Images

Germany comes in this year seeded No.11, and it’s Siegemund in the singles role. She holds a surprising 3-1 edge over Haddad Maia, who comes in ranked No. 13 — 67 spots ahead of Siegemund.

Zverev has beaten Monteiro the two previous times they’ve met.

Brazil is in a must-win situation after losing to China 3-0 on Friday. Haddad Maia was upset by Gao Xinyu, a late substitute for Zheng Qinwen.

    Group A: USA vs. Canada

    Start time: (5 p.m. local, 4 p.m. ET)

[1] Coco Gauff (USA) vs [7] Leylah Fernandez (CAN)
[1] Taylor Fritz (USA) vs [7] Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN)
[1] Coco Gauff (USA) / Taylor Fritz (USA) vs [7] Leylah Fernandez (CAN) / Felix Auger-Aliassime (CAN)

The head-to-heads and the rankings suggest the Americans have the advantage, and there’s also another factor in play: vengeance.

Fritz and Gauff paired in the mixed doubles at the Paris Olympics and reached the quarterfinals — only to lose to Canada’s Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski.

I think we’re all pumped up to play regardless if it’s Canada or whoever,” Gauff told reporters. “I think we all want to win. It’s not an easy start to the first match of the year, playing Leylah and Felix.

WTA Finals flashback: Gauff’s championship and unforgettable moments

“At the Olympics we actually lost to Team Canada. Hopefully we can get a little bit of revenge for that.”

Canada got off to a good start Saturday with a 2-1 win over Croatia. Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez teamed to win the pivotal match.

“We’re both familiar with these competitions,” Auger-Aliassime said. “There’s a lot of matches to play, and you need to stay calm through it all, through the roller coasters.”

Fernandez defeated Olympic silver singles medalist Donna Vekic 6-4, 6-3. The match against Gauff is another early opportunity to assess where her level is.

“It’s super important,” Fernandez said. “I feel very lucky to be part of this group. Coco and Donna, they’re great players. To start off the year playing against them is going to be a great way to see what I need to improve in the next couple weeks leading up to the AO.”

More WTA action in Australia gets underway

Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff arrive in Perth off the back of stellar finishes to the 2024 season looking to translate that form into team success for USA at the United Cup.

Fritz capped a standout year, in which he made title-match runs at the US Open and Nitto ATP Finals, by reaching a career-high of No. 4 in the PIF ATP Rankings, while Gauff continued to hit new heights. In Riyadh last month, the 20-year-old World No. 3 became the youngest player to win the prestigious WTA Finals since Maria Sharapova in 2004. On Sunday they will unite to lead Team USA onto court against Canada in their opening Group A clash.

“I’m super pumped to have Coco as my partner,” Fritz told ATPTour.com in Perth. “It’s great playing mixed and knowing I can fully trust the person that I’m playing with. She’s won a lot in doubles and she’s obviously an incredible doubles player.”

Although Gauff boasts an impressive doubles resume – nine tour-level titles including the 2024 French Open – mixed is a different game. Fritz and Gauff found that out at the Paris Olympics, where they notched just one win.

Yet despite their underwhelming cameo in the French capital, Team USA is no stranger to success on the international stage, underpinned by the key role Fritz played en route to the inaugural United Cup title in 2023.

“I think a big key to our team’s success in 2023 was the team chemistry and the vibes,” said Fritz, who won seven of his eight matches during their title run. “In these team events, energy is a really underrated factor in teams playing well.

“Enjoying everyone’s company, that’s something that our team has always done well.”

After failing to progress to the knockouts last time out in Perth, Team USA will be keen to reignite that team atmosphere this week in Perth. As the leading man and woman, Fritz and Gauff will look to Danielle Collins and Desirae Krawczyk on the bench for that extra burst when they need it. Yet judging from their vibrant media-day antics, it doesn’t seem that they will have much trouble finding it.

“Danielle is definitely the most feisty,” Gauff said with a laugh. “She has already told me some of the things she would try to pull if she was to step out on the court. She’s a great sub, I played some points with her and she was playing great.”

“Des really [has been] a cheerleader the last two years,” Fritz added. “She’s a great team member for someone who hasn’t played in the last two years. She’s always done an amazing job on the bench.”

Fritz and Gauff will have a shot at avenging their Olympics loss to Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski when they face Team Canada in their opening Group A tie. Starpower is one thing they will have on their side, belief is another.

“Fom knowing Taylor, I feel that our approach is very similar, mindset-wise,” said Gauff. “I think the belief factor that I have, he has the same – that’s the biggest [similarity]. Some guys I see, they may believe in themselves, but I think Taylor [really] does.

“I think if things get pretty tense, I’ll definitely look to the bench for energy, and I’ll be right there cheering Taylor on [in the singles] when I can. I think I’m excited and looking forward to that.”

The United Cup is just around the corner and Team USA is looking stronger than ever with the dynamic duo of Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff leading the charge. Both players have been in stellar form lately and are ready to showcase their skills on the international stage.

Taylor Fritz has been on fire this season, reaching the finals of the Indian Wells Masters and climbing up the ATP rankings. His powerful serves and aggressive game style make him a force to be reckoned with on any surface. With his recent success, Fritz is poised to lead Team USA to victory in the United Cup.

On the other hand, Coco Gauff has been a rising star in the tennis world, capturing the hearts of fans with her speed, agility, and fearlessness on the court. At just 17 years old, Gauff has already made a name for herself by defeating some of the top players in the world. Her confidence and determination make her a key player in Team USA’s quest for United Cup glory.

With Fritz’s experience and Gauff’s youthful energy, Team USA has a winning combination that could potentially lead them to victory in the United Cup. The duo’s chemistry and teamwork will be crucial in navigating through tough competition from other nations.

So, get ready to cheer on Team USA as they battle it out for United Cup glory with Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff leading the charge. This dynamic duo is pumped and ready to go, and they just might be the key to bringing home the trophy. Let’s go, USA!

United Cup 2025: Coco Gauff vs Leylah Fernandez; Preview, Head-to-Head, and Prediction

The stage is set for a blockbuster clash at the 2025 United Cup! American superstar, Coco Gauff is all set to take on Canada’s Leylah Fernadez on December 29 (Day 3). Who’ll win this epic battle? Well, Gauff was heard saying, “I think we all want to win. It’s not an easy start to the first match of the year, playing Leylah and Felix.” What did Fernandez say of this exciting matchup? “Playing against (Coco Gauff) is never easy. She’s a tough opponent, great competitor. So hopefully we’re going to have fun tomorrow and going to put on some good show,” said the 22-year-old Canadian. Who has the edge in this enticing encounter, though?

Coco Gauff vs Leylah Fernandez: Prediction

Coco Gauff started her season with a title triumph at the ASB Classic and ended the season by winning the WTA Finals. She defeated China’s Qinwen Zheng in the final of the 2024 WTA Finals event 3-6,6-4,7-6(2). Apart from these two, Coco Gauff has also won the China Open this year. She defeated Karolina Muchova (CZE) in that match in two sets. What will be the scoreline in her match against the Canadian, though?

Talking about the Canadian, Leylah Fernandez has failed to win a title this season. However, she has made quite a few deep runs in her previous tournaments in 2024! Her best record was reaching the final of the Eastbourne International in June 2024. However, she was defeated by Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in that match 3-6,4-6. After that, she made quite a few QF runs and also reached the SF of the Hong Kong Open. Fernandez is entering this match after beating Croatia’s Donna Vekic in the previous match at the United Cup by 6-4,6-3. Can the Canadian keep her winning run intact at this tournament?

Both Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez are two of the most promising tennis players on the women’s Tour at the moment. However, the 2023 US Open champion (Gauff) hasn’t yet faced the 2021 US Open finalist (Fernandez) ever in her career. So, currently, their H2H record is at 0-0!

Prediction: Gauff to win in three sets

Coco Gauff struggles a bit with her consistency in the 2024 season. However, she made a stunning end to her campaign in the last season by winning the WTA Finals. Experts opine this win would give her a boost in confidence for the upcoming tournament and it starts from the United Cup itself! After failing at the Paris Olympics, she is desperate to win a title for her nation. If we take a look at her record in the 2024 season, Coco Gauff (3) had a win-loss record of 54-17. On the other hand, her opponent, Leylah Fernandez (31) has a win-loss record of just 31-25.

Considering all these factors, Gauff seems to be having a slight edge in this epic battle! However, we’re not ruling out the chances of Fernadez coming up with a tough fight in this matchup. Now, if we take a look at their playing styles, Coco Gauff is known for her incredible athleticism and excellent defensive game. She can mix up her shots pretty well and has the ability to win longer rallies. Not only that, but even her incredible mental toughness gives her an edge in bringing out favorable outcomes from the nervy moments during her matches. However, her serves has been a major issue in the 2024 season. She has hit 250 aces in the last season but committed 430 double faults.

Talking about serves, even Leylah Fernandez struggled a bit with it last season. Fernandez hit 136 aces and committed 249 double faults! Now, if we shift our focus to her playing style, Leylah Fernandez mainly comprises power, agility, and incredible strategic moves. This left-handed tennis player can create some challenging angles to keep her opponents always on their toes. Even she has incredible athleticism and footwork. Considering their fighting spirit, we expect this match to go a little deeper, but Coco Gauff’s superior momentum makes her a favorite in this match.

The United Cup 2025 is set to feature an exciting match-up between two of the rising stars in women’s tennis, Coco Gauff and Leylah Fernandez. Both players have been making waves on the professional circuit and are sure to put on a thrilling display of skill and talent.

Head-to-Head: Gauff and Fernandez have faced each other a few times on the WTA tour, with each player notching a win against the other. Their matches have been closely contested, with both players showcasing their versatility and tenacity on the court. It’s safe to say that this upcoming match will be a battle to remember.

Preview: Gauff, known for her powerful serve and aggressive baseline game, will be looking to assert her dominance early in the match. Fernandez, on the other hand, is a crafty player with excellent court coverage and a knack for finding angles to outmaneuver her opponents. Their contrasting styles make for an intriguing match-up that is sure to keep fans on the edge of their seats.

Prediction: This match is bound to be a nail-biter, with both players bringing their A-game to the court. While Gauff may have the edge in terms of experience and firepower, Fernandez has proven time and time again that she is a force to be reckoned with. In the end, I predict that Fernandez will come out on top in a closely contested match, showcasing her resilience and determination to come out victorious.

Be sure to tune in to the United Cup 2025 to witness this epic showdown between two of the brightest young talents in women’s tennis. It’s sure to be a match for the ages.

Leylah Fernandez pays glowing tribute to Coco Gauff ahead of United Cup showdown

Leylah Fernandez is looking forward to her anticipated showdown against Coco Gauff at the 2025 United Cup. The 2021 US Open finalist recently paid a glowing tribute, touching on her American counterpart’s formidable presence.

Fernandez, who is representing Canada at the event, kicked off her 2025 campaign with a 6-4, 6-3 win against Croatia’s Donna Vekic on December 28. About her memorable start against the 2024 Olympic silver medalist, Leylah Fernandez said in her press conference:

“It definitely feels nice. To play against Donna, who has made the semifinals in Wimbledon and then silver in the Olympics, it’s never easy it play someone who has that much confidence.”

Although the 22-year-old gave Canada a 1-0 lead, Croatia drew level in the next match, with Borna Coric beating Felix Auger-Aliassime 0-6, 6-4, 6-4. The latter made a quick turnaround in the deciding mixed-doubles match with Fernandez, and Canada won the tie, with the pair beating Lucija Ciric Bagaric and Ivan Dodig 6-3, 6-4. They face Team USA, led by World No. 3 Coco Gauff and World No. 4 Taylor Fritz, on Sunday, December 29.

Ahead of her clash against Gauff, Fernandez noted that playing against the 2023 US Open champion is “never easy.”

“Playing against (Coco Gauff) is never easy. She’s a tough opponent, great competitor,” she said. “So hopefully we’re going to have fun tomorrow and going to put on some good shows.”

    Sunday’s clash marks the pair’s first-ever tour-level meeting.

“That’s also one of the reasons why I decided playing the United Cup. It’s not only the team atmosphere, but I’ll be able to play against the top players, see where my level is at, see what are the improvements I can do in the next couple of weeks before the (Australian Open),” Leylah Fernandez said.

While this is Leylah Fernandez’s second United Cup stint, Coco Gauff has sacrificed her title defense at the ASB Classic to stage her debut at the 2025 event. About her decision to represent top-seeded Team USA at the United Cup, Gauff said in her press conference:

“For me I wanted to play a higher level of competition and also a team competition.”

“I had a lot of fun with the Olympics. Basically a similar crew here today,” she said of her team, which includes Taylor Fritz, Danielle Collins, Desirae Krawczyk, Denis Kudla, and Robert Galloway. “Yeah, just had a lot of fun. The season’s already so much by ourselves that it’s nice to mix it up.”

Gauff, who concluded her 2024 season with a spectacular run to her maiden WTA Finals title, shared her high hopes about starting her 2025 campaign at the United Cup.

“I’m looking forward to hopefully having a good couple weeks here in Perth and hopefully in Sydney, as well.”

Coco Gauff also conveyed that she is eyeing revenge against Canada in light of her and Taylor Fritz’s Paris Olympics loss. The American pair were knocked out of mixed doubles by Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski in a closely contested 7-6 (2), 3-6, (10-8) quarterfinal battle.

“We all want to win. It’s not an easy start to the first match of the year, playing (Leylah Fernandez) and (Felix Auger-Aliassime). But I think we’re up, ready for it,” she said. “At the Olympics we lost to Team Canada. Hopefully we can get a little bit of revenge for that.”

Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime have previously led Canada to Billie Jean King Cup 2023 and Davis Cup 2022 victories, respectively. The latter also won the ATP Cup, representing his country in 2022. Meanwhile, Taylor Fritz and Jessica Pegula-led Team USA were the maiden United Cup champions in 2023.
