With Ryan Poehling placed on injured reserve, Abols, a Latvian center who had spent the last four seasons playing overseas, was called up by the Flyers. He joined the club for practice Monday, putting himself on the doorstep of his dream.
And he should have no problem connecting with his new teammates. Being able to speak four languages — English, Latvian, Swedish and Russian — can only help.
“This group and this room has been praised a lot of times,” Abols said. “It’s very easy to fit in here.”
Abols signed with the Flyers last offseason just ahead of the June 15 deadline for players under European contracts. Because of the timing, he admitted to being a bit surprised when general manager Danny Briere reached out with the opportunity.
But Abols was ready to rejoin the AHL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2016. Prior to this season, the last time he played in North America was 2019-20, when the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shut things down.
So when the Flyers approached him last summer, he was compelled to leave the SHL for a chance at his NHL debut. That could come Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers host the Red Wings (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
“I kind of felt it inside from the last time when I was here with all the COVID and stuff, there were some questions unanswered for myself,” Abols said. “I didn’t want to let this opportunity slip. When I’m done with hockey, I’m glad at least I came here and gave it another shot.”
In 34 games this season with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has put up nine goals and 10 assists. Over his last 10 games, he recorded three goals and four assists. He has quality length and plays a responsible game, with the ability to win key faceoffs.

There’s using it as motivation and then there’s what the Buckeyes did in the College Football Playoff. Ohio State dominated Tennessee and Oregon and then shut down Texas‘ offense in the bracket.
Now win away, maybe Judkins and Ohio State can thank Michigan for the spark.
“I think in that moment that kind of gave us a little spark,” Judkins said, via Chris Vannini of The Athletic. “Like, definitely, I would say it made us want to go harder man, and realize, okay, like that was super disrespectful. I think it made a lot of guys wake up in that moment. But did anything change about our team?
“I don’t think so. I think we prepared the same way and have the same edge as we did in the beginning of the season. So I think that just made us just really go a little harder.”
After losing the “The Game” to conclude the regular season, head coach Ryan Day looked like a dead man walking. Yes, the Buckeyes still had the most talented roster on paper, but there were concerns if Ohio State could actually make a run with four straight wins.
Like Judkins, Day believed in his squad. And if it all culminates in a national title win over Notre Dame Monday night, Day and the Buckeyes will have ultimate redemption.

“He admitted over the weekend that he told the team I screwed up. I’m sorry, we will correct it, and that’s exactly what he has done. We talked about Marcus Freeman, Ryan Day winning this thing is very remarkable as well considering where he was just six weeks ago.”

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Trump administration Monday ended use of a border app called CBP One that has allowed nearly 1 million people to legally enter the United States with eligibility to work.
A notice on the website of Customs and Border Protection Monday just after Trump was sworn in let users know that the app that had been used to allow migrants to schedule appointments at eight southwest border ports of entry is no longer available. The notice said that existing appointments have been cancelled.
The move adheres to a promise Trump made during his campaign and will please critics who say it was an overly generous magnet for more people to come to Mexico’s border with the United States.
The CBP One app has been wildly popular. It is an online lottery system to give appointments to 1,450 people a day at eight border crossings. They enter on immigration “parole,” a presidential authority that Joe Biden used more than any other president since it was introduced in 1952.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump will sign a series of executive orders designed to beef up security at the southern border by relying more on the U.S. military and redefining who gets to become an American, preparing to make good on his defining political promise to crack down on immigration.
But actual execution of such a far-reaching immigration agenda is certain to face legal and logistical challenges.
“I will declare a national emergency at our southern border. All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places in which they came,” said Trump to thunderous applause Monday as he spoke during his inauguration moments after being sworn into office.
The orders were also previewed Monday by an incoming White House official before Trump takes office will aim to end asylum access, send troops to the U.S.-Mexico border, suspend the refugee program, force people seeking asylum to wait in Mexico and end birthright citizenship. There was little detail on specifically how these broad plans would be executed.
Many of the steps echoed previous ones during Trump’s first administration that also faced lawsuits. Others — like the effort to end the constitutional right to automatic citizenship for anyone born in the U.S. — marked sweeping new strategies that are expected to elicit pushback in the courts.
The official spoke on condition of anonymity to provide details before the orders are signed, some of them soon after he’s inaugurated Monday.
Immigrant communities around the country have been bracing for a crackdown that the incoming Republican president had been promising throughout his campaign and again at a rally Sunday.
The orders previewed were less specific about how Trump will fulfill his pledge of mass deportations of at least 11 million people already in the country illegally. One edict will equip immigration officers with “authorities needed” to enforce the law.
Trump and his aides have repeatedly said they would scrap President Joe Biden’s deportation priorities, which focused on people with criminal records and those who are national security threats, to include all people without legal status.
A key announcement was the effort to end birthright citizenship — one of Trump’s most sweeping immigration efforts yet.
Birthright citizenship means anyone born in the United States automatically becomes an American citizen, a right enshrined in the 14th Amendment that was ratified in 1868 in the wake of the Civil War and assured citizenship for all, including Black people.
It applies to children born to someone in the country illegally or in the U.S. on a tourist or student visa who plans to return to their home country. Trump’s effort to end that right is certain to face steep legal challenges, and the incoming White House official provided no information on how he intends to carry it out.
Trump also intends to suspend refugee resettlement for four months, the official said. That’s a program that for decades has allowed hundreds of thousands of people from around the world fleeing war and persecution to come to the United States.
Trump similarly suspended the refugee program at the beginning of his first term, and then after reinstating it, cut the numbers of refugees admitted into the country every year.
The Trump administration also intends to designate criminal cartels as foreign terrorist organizations and specifically aims to crack down on the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua and will remove those gang members from the country. The homegrown street gang was born in Venezuela but has become a menace even on American soil and exploded into the U.S. presidential campaign amid a spree of kidnappings, extortion and other crimes throughout the western hemisphere tied to a mass exodus of Venezuelan migrants.
The incoming administration also will order an end to releasing migrants in the U.S. while they await immigration court hearings, a practice known as “catch-and-release,” but officials didn’t say how they would pay for the enormous costs associated with detention.
Trump plans to “end asylum,” presumably going beyond what Biden has done to severely restrict it. It is unclear what the incoming administration will do with people of nationalities whose countries don’t take back their citizens, such as Nicaragua and Venezuela.
And it would reinstate the first Trump administration’s “Remain in Mexico” policy, which forced about 70,000 asylum-seekers to wait in Mexico for hearings in U.S. immigration court. That measure would require cooperation from Mexico, and it is unclear how it jibes with pledges to end asylum altogether.
Mexico, a country integral to any American effort to limit illegal immigration, weighed in Monday morning, indicating they were prepared to receive asylum seekers that the U.S. makes wait in Mexico while emphasizing that there should be some sort of online application allowing them to schedule appointments at the U.S. border.
Currently there’s an online process called CBP One that was used by the Biden administration that has allowed hundreds of thousands of migrants into the country to pursue asylum claims. Although there was no specific reference to CBP One during the call with reporters Monday, incoming officials have repeatedly said they will ax it immediately along with another program that allowed 30,000 migrants from four countries to enter the U.S. provided they have a financial sponsor.
Trump will order the government, with Defense Department assistance, to “finish” construction of the border wall, though the official didn’t say how much territory that would cover. Barriers currently span about 450 miles (720 kilometers), slightly more than one-third of the border. Many areas that aren’t covered are in Texas, including inhospitable terrain where migrants rarely cross.
Sending troops to the border is a strategy that Trump has used before, as has Biden. In 2018, Trump deployed 800 active-duty troops to assist Border Patrol personnel in processing large migrant caravans. And in 2023, with the U.S. preparing to end pandemic-era restrictions on immigration, the Biden administration sent 1,500 active-duty troops to the U.S.-Mexico border.
Both administrations also used National Guard troops along the border.
The official did not say how many troops Trump was planning to send, saying that would be up to the secretary of defense or what their role would be when they get there.
Historically, troops have been used to back up Border Patrol agents, who are responsible for securing the nearly 2,000-mile border separating the U.S. from Mexico and not in roles that put them in direct contact with migrants.
Critics have said that sending troops to the border sends the signal that migrants are a threat.

President-Elect Trump Just Gave XRP Investors Some Great News for 2025
XRP (XRP 3.15%) has been on an incredibly hot streak lately. The cryptocurrency’s token price has risen 54% year to date, far outperforming the gain of roughly 9% for Bitcoin and roughly 3% for Ethereum. Even more impressive, XRP is up 450.5% over the last year.
Following this rally, XRP now has a market capitalization of roughly $185 billion and ranks as the world’s third-largest cryptocurrency by valuation. And while the token will likely continue to see volatile swings in the near term, the stage could be set for it to rocket even higher thanks to shifting political dynamics.
With President-elect Donald Trump set to take office on Jan. 20, the cryptocurrency market appears poised to enter a period of unprecedented governmental support. Even more striking, Trump may have recently signaled a particularly strong outlook for XRP in 2025 and beyond.
The Trump administration could pave the way for Ripple to keep soaring
On Jan. 15, the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) faced a deadline to submit an appeals brief in the securities violations case it brought against Ripple Labs, the company that created and maintains the XRP cryptocurrency. The token’s price soared in the lead-up to the deadline, with some investors betting that the SEC would not bother to pursue the case.
The lawsuit was brought by the SEC in 2020 and alleged that Ripple had offered XRP as an unregistered security to raise funds from investors. In other words, the agency believed that Ripple Labs was selling XRP to investors as if it were a stock that granted holders an ownership position in the business, and the agency believed that this security offering did not go through required approval channels.
In 2023, a ruling on the case was issued, and Ripple Labs was ordered to pay a fine of $125 million. That was far below the $2 billion penalty that had been sought by the SEC. As a result, the agency said that it would be appealing the ruling.
The SEC came down to the wire with submitting its appeals brief in the case, but it did ultimately submit the document before the deadline. However, while the case against Ripple and XRP is still being pursued, President-elect Trump may have recently signaled that investors in the cryptocurrency shouldn’t worry.
On Jan. 6, Ripple CEO Brad Garlinghouse and its chief legal officer, Stuart Alderoty, had dinner with Trump. The next day, Garlinghouse posted a message on X describing it as a “great dinner” and a “strong start to 2025” along with a photo of the three men smiling together and Trump giving a thumbs-up sign.
While this doesn’t necessarily mean that XRP will continue to soar or that the legal issues surrounding Ripple will evaporate, the dinner and message from Garlinghouse look significant in light of changes set to take place with the incoming administration.
Signaling the potential for another explosive catalyst, Trump is reportedly considering XRP as a component of a strategic crypto reserve that will be founded during his administration. If so, U.S. purchases of the token could send its price even higher.
XRP is entering a new political world in 2025
In conjunction with Trump coming back to the White House, current SEC Chairman Gary Gensler will be stepping down. He is slated to be replaced by Paul Atkins, Trump’s pick for the role and someone who has been a vocal supporter of the cryptocurrency industry.
So although the SEC is currently still pursuing its appeals case against Ripple, Atkins will have the option of charting a different course and dropping the case once he assumes leadership of the agency. Given that Trump has signaled support for the crypto industry and said that he wants to make the U.S. “the crypto capital of the planet,” it’s not a big stretch to think that the SEC under Atkins will drop its legal challenges against Ripple. If so, that could be one substantial catalyst for XRP amid an increasingly bullish backdrop for crypto.
Besides Trump’s meetings with the Ripple leadership and the selection of Atkins to head up the SEC, the incoming president will also create a new White House position: the artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency czar.
Trump has named entrepreneur and venture capitalist David Sacks as the first person to serve in the role, and the appointment appears to be another bullish indicator for XRP and the broader crypto industry. Sacks is viewed as a supporter of crypto and has investments in the space.
With President-elect Trump signaling support for the crypto industry on multiple levels, the stage could be set for XRP investors to see strong performance in 2025.

Alma fiercely protects her femininity and works endlessly to retain her polish and her elegance, but her surroundings are filled with violent and out-of-control characters. Danger lurks around every turn, especially since all of these men are determined to cash in on getting rich, no matter what it takes. They have no problem resorting to murder in their pursuit of gold (or of power over the town).
Within the first several episodes of Deadwood, Alma very quickly finds herself in a precarious situation, where she must use her intelligence to outsmart the town’s ruthless villain, Al Swearengen (Ian McShane). Throughout the show’s three-season run, Alma continues to evolve. Although she’s determined to retain some of her dignified facade, she is a woman who fights to overcome her circumstances (and to pursue her desires). Whether she’s falling for heartthrob Seth Bullock (Timothy Olyphant) or struggling with a serious laudanum addiction, Alma has a quiet, restrained intensity that always pushes her towards survival. No matter how high the stakes are, Alma endures despite all the odds stacked against her.

Molly Parker Gives an Impressive, Nuanced Performance in ‘Deadwood’
Although there are some flashier performances in the series (like McShane and Weigert), Parker’s depiction of Alma is a more understated portrayal that allows the show to offer another authentic, multilayered female character. Parker plays Alma as a woman with values (which are hard to maintain in a rough-and-tumble Western town), and her blend of vulnerability and strength illustrates the complexity of being a woman in a misogynistic world. Parker was also able to create a compelling chemistry with her co-stars (especially Olyphant), and some of the most intriguing parts of the series are when Alma finds herself interacting with another character that pushes Alma out of her comfort zone. Just like with Doc, Parker demonstrates that female characters can show all sides of themselves; Alma’s range of emotions spreads the gamut from jealousy and anger to determination and bravery. In the hands of a lesser actor, Alma could have become just another supporting character, there to further the plot points of the men. But with Parker’s sensitivity and truthfulness (and the stellar writing of creator David Milch), Alma becomes a full-fledged protagonist who is one of Deadwood‘s most engrossing characters.
Deadwood was ultimately canceled after three seasons, largely due to extremely high production costs (each episode cost $4.5 million to make) and declining ratings. There were fan petitions to save this truly unique series, but HBO decided to pull the plug in 2006. Luckily, fans were treated to a movie that came out in 2019, which provided an update on where the characters were several years after the action of the show took place. Even decades later, Parker was still able to infuse a captivating display of emotions to continue the legacy of Alma’s fascinating story. Now that Parker is starring in Doc, hopefully even more people will get to see this underrated, versatile actor at work, but Deadwood is still one of the best examples of her immense talent.

Campbell said the Lions-Giants brawl-heavy joint practice back in August set the tone for the kind of tough matchups they’d face this season.

“I felt like the biggest adjustment for us was training camp out at New York,” Campbell said Thursday. “That was the first real taste of the perception. I thought the Giants, man… They practiced hard, they brought it.
“It was a lot of energy; a lot of juice. And I thought that was good for us to get that and it’s like now, you know what it’s going to be like all season, and we’ve handled it. I mean, we handle it well. We know we’re going to get everybody’s best shot.”
If only the Giants had found the same “juice.” With a 3-14 record and the longest losing streak in franchise history, the Giants had one of their worst seasons of the century in 2024. Detroit, meanwhile, is the betting favorite to win Super Bowl LIX, despite a slew of injuries to their impressive defense.

Sling just gave its DVR feature a massive upgrade — but there’s a catch
Sling is our pick for the best cable alternative. You get a ton of features, can pick from multiple channel packages and premium add-ons, and despite a recent price hike, it’s still cheaper than its competition. Yes, that includes the recently announced DirecTV MySports sports-only streaming package. But one thing where it falls short is its cloud DVR, which had been capped at 200 hours of storage.

Sling announced in a press release yesterday (Jan. 15) that it’s upgrading its premium DVR Plus add-on from 200 hours of maximum storage to unlimited cloud storage, and keeps your recordings stored for up to nine months. In a fitting move, Sling is also rebranding the name of this feature to Unlimited DVR.
But getting unlimited DVR storage isn’t the only perk you get from this upgraded cloud DVR. You also get an auto-record feature that allows you to replay top sports, TV shows and movies (note: to turn on auto-record you need to opt-in via your account settings). Sling says this feature is exclusive to Sling, but unless I missed something in the press release, this feels like what I can do with my YouTube TV cloud DVR. Still, it’s a great feature to have.
Aside from unlimited storage and auto-record, Sling’s Unlimited DVR feature also allows you to fast-forward through commercials and thanks to its cloud-based technology, you don’t need any additional hardware and can watch your recordings from any device with a Sling TV app.
Of course, there is a catch: You have to pay for this storage. Unlimited DVR costs an additional $5 on top of your Sling subscription, which itself starts at $43 for Sling Orange or Sling Blue or starts at $61 for Sling Orange + Blue. If you don’t want to pay though, you still get some storage for free. Sling’s DVR Free plan comes with your Sling TV subscription and includes 50 hours of storage and keeps your recordings for nine months. If you’re using Freestream, Sling’s free streaming service, you get Freestream DVR, which gives you 10 hours of storage for free and keeps your recordings stored on the cloud for up to 30 days.

After Roki Sasaki was posted by the Chiba Lotte Marines on Dec. 10, his agent, Joel Wolfe, reached out to all 30 Major League Baseball teams with a letter inviting them to submit “any type of information that they wanted Roki to review.”
The response was substantial, with 20 teams showing interest.
Each team that met with Sasaki was given a “homework assignment,” which allowed Sasaki to gauge how each organization would approach analyzing and communicating information with him. The specific details of this assignment were not revealed, but its purpose was clear: To provide Sasaki with insight into how the teams operate and how they would support his development.

“Without giving the actual details of what that assignment was,” Wolfe explained, “every team got that very same assignment, and it enabled them to show how they can analyze and communicate information with him, and really showed where he was coming from in analyzing and creating his selection criteria, in looking at different teams.”
Though there has been significant speculation that the bidding for Sasaki could eventually narrow down to the San Diego Padres and Los Angeles Dodgers, Wolfe underscored that Sasaki prioritized fairness throughout the process. “A level playing field” was a key consideration for the young pitcher. In order to ensure this, the initial meetings were held under specific conditions: Each meeting was capped at two hours and took place at Wasserman’s Los Angeles offices. This setup allowed Sasaki to meet with teams in a neutral, controlled environment.
Additionally, Sasaki made one other important request: No current players were to attend the meetings in person. This decision meant that any recruiting efforts from players like Shohei Ohtani or Yoshinobu Yamamoto would have to be presented through video rather than face-to-face interaction.
“There were a couple of teams that had a video from one or two players, but for the most part, it was the general manager, possibly an assistant GM, the manager, the pitching coach, and people from the bio-mechanics performance and training staff,” Wolfe said.
Currently, Sasaki is back in Japan, but he is expected to return to the United States in January for a second round of meetings with a select group of teams. This will mark the next step in his highly anticipated decision-making process, with Sasaki set to make his final choice between Jan. 15, when the international signing period opens, and Jan. 23, when his posting window closes.
