“We strongly condemn the violence against peaceful Georgian citizens, protesters, journalists, and opposition figures, including former Georgian Prime Minister Gakharia,” said Matthew Miller, Spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State.
“This is another example of the Georgian Dream’s oppressive tactics, which will leave the country isolated,” he wrote on the X Platform.
The leader of the Gakharia for Georgia party, Giorgi Gakharia, was attacked in Batumi on January 14. The Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) initiated an investigation under Article 126 of the Criminal Code, which pertains to violence.
In recent months, it has become increasingly evident that the ruling party, GD, in our country is resorting to oppressive tactics that are not only detrimental to democracy but also threatening to leave the country isolated on the global stage.
From cracking down on peaceful protests to censoring dissenting voices in the media, GD has been tightening its grip on power and silencing any form of opposition. This oppressive behavior is not only undemocratic but also risks alienating our country from the international community.
By stifling freedom of speech and suppressing civil liberties, GD is sending a clear message to the world that our country is not a safe haven for democracy and human rights. This could lead to sanctions, diplomatic isolation, and a tarnished reputation on the global stage.
It is imperative that we, as citizens, speak out against these oppressive tactics and demand accountability from our government. We must not allow GD to continue down this dangerous path that could ultimately leave our country isolated and vulnerable.
It is time for us to stand up for our rights, for democracy, and for the future of our country. Let us join together in solidarity and fight against the oppressive tactics of GD before it’s too late.
