  • Geno Smith linked in trade with Seahawks and one surprising team

Geno Smith wants an extension from the Seattle Seahawks. Of course, he does and he should. Every person who works for a company wants to know their future in that company is secure. The question is how much Smith wants from Seattle and how much Seattle wants to pay him.

Smith is also 34 years old, though he was a backup for so long that he didn’t take as much punishment as most other quarterbacks his age. Sure, he has taken a lot of hits since becoming QB1 for Seattle in 2022 because the offensive line has been so poor, but he sat on the bench for a half-decade before that. The quarterback also has a great arm and throws with accuracy.

If Seattle doesn’t want Smith around long-term, there is likely another team willing to take a chance on him. There is no guarantee, though, that should Seattle entertain a trade for Smith another team would give much back in return for the quarterback. There are several reasons for this, including the fact Smith could hit free agency after the 2025 season.

Could a trade of Seattle Seahawks quarterback Geno Smith to the Cleveland Browns be an option?

One NFL beat reporter has an interesting idea on one team that might be willing to give up a bit to get Smith. Dan Labbe of Cleveland.com suggested recently on 92.3 The Fan in Cleveland that the Browns might want Smith. The scenario makes sense, in theory.

The Browns presumed starting quarterback Deshaun Watson tore his Achilles near the end of the season, and he could miss all of 2025. Plus, Watson has not been very good for Cleveland since going to the team in a trade with the Houston Texans in 2022. He has torn his Achilles before, so he is definitely an injury risk for the rest of his career.

Cleveland could add Smith, and have him be the starter for the team, while Watson sat out the entire year. If Smith does well, the Browns could think of signing him to an extension. Releasing Watson in 2026 would still cost Cleveland a lot of money, but the number would be down from $99,799,000 in 2025 to $26,864,000. Teams have taken more of a cap hit than previously (i.e., Russell Wilson and the Denver Broncos in 2024).

What would the Seahawks get in return? The Browns pick second overall in the 2025 NFL draft, and Seattle is not going to be able to get that pick for Smith. Cleveland does pick first in the second round (pick 33 overall) and that, along with a later-round choice, might be good enough. Seattle would then start Sam Howell at quarterback next season.

General manager John Schneider could also package picks 18 (the choice the Seahawks currently own in the first round) and pick 33 and try to move up in the draft to potentially choose quarterbacks Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward. That is not likely (neither is the proposed scenario put forth by Labbe), but anything is possible.

    More Seahawks news and analysis:

Rumors are swirling that quarterback Geno Smith could be on the move again, this time to the Seattle Seahawks. However, one surprising team has also emerged as a potential landing spot for the former New York Jet.

According to sources, the Seahawks are looking to add depth at the quarterback position and have expressed interest in Smith as a backup to Russell Wilson. Smith, who has shown flashes of potential throughout his career, could provide valuable experience and leadership to the Seahawks’ quarterback room.

But the real shocker comes from the Miami Dolphins, who have reportedly reached out to the Seahawks about a potential trade for Smith. With Tua Tagovailoa still developing and uncertainty surrounding the quarterback position, the Dolphins see Smith as a potential veteran presence who could compete for the starting job.

While nothing is set in stone just yet, it will be interesting to see where Geno Smith ends up next season and how he could impact his new team. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

2025 NFL Mock Draft sees Seattle Seahawks pick 3rd QB in first round as Geno Smith succession plan

The 2025 NFL Draft order is beginning to take shape as the 2024 NFL season winds down. All teams will have different needs in the draft, but quarterbacks are always among the biggest focus across the league. Many teams figure to be in the market for a new quarterback, as they usually are, and several options are expected to be selected in the first round this year.

The Seattle Seahawks are one potential team that could be interested in the 2025 quarterback class. Geno Smith has been fairly unimpressive season with just 17 touchdowns and 15 interceptions entering Week 15, so it’s unclear how committed the franchise will be to their 34-year-old starter. Even if they do continue to start him next year, now may be the time for them to start figuring out their long-term plan for the position with Smith aging.

At this current stage of the season, the Seahawks are projected to have the 18th overall pick. This means that they will likely miss out on Shedeur Sanders and Cameron Ward, but they could potentially have their choice of quarterback beyond that, if they do in fact choose to address the position. Here’s how a potential 2025 Mock Draft could look.

Seahawks target future QB in first round of 2025 NFL Mock Draft

Sportskeeda’s Mock Draft Simulator predicts that the Seattle Seahawks will select Alabama Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Milroe with the 18th overall pick in the first round. This represents the third quarterback off of the draft board this year, behind Shedeur Sanders and Cameron Ward. In a bit of a surprise, the simulator expects Carson Beck to fall down into the later part of the first round, despite his currently high draft expectations.

Milroe possesses the athleticism and dual-threat skillset that most offense are seeking in the modern version of the way that the NFL is played. Across his past two seasons as the starter for Alabama, he has thrown for 38 touchdowns, but has also added a massive 32 rushing touchdowns.

The dynamic prospect has also rushed for 1,250 yards across the past two years, so his game may be highly desirable for NFL teams this year. With the Seahawks potentially in the market to develop a future plan behind Geno Smith, it makes sense for them to target the upside of Milroe without forcing him into an immediate starting situation. The long-term strategy could be beneficial for the team going forward.

In the latest 2025 NFL Mock Draft, the Seattle Seahawks shocked fans and analysts alike by selecting their future quarterback in the first round. With the 3rd overall pick, the Seahawks chose a talented young signal-caller to serve as the successor to veteran Geno Smith.

Many were surprised by this move, as the Seahawks already had a solid starter in Smith. However, the team’s brass clearly felt that it was time to start planning for the future and securing their quarterback position for years to come.

The chosen quarterback is seen as a dynamic and promising prospect, with the potential to lead the Seahawks to continued success in the years ahead. While some may question the decision to draft a quarterback so early, the team is confident in their choice and excited for what the future holds.

Only time will tell if this bold move pays off for the Seahawks, but fans can rest assured that the team is committed to building a strong foundation for sustained success. Stay tuned for more updates as the 2025 NFL Draft approaches.

The novelty of seeing UConn in the women’s AP Top 25 poll wore off a long time ago, but the Huskies’ inclusion this week is worth celebrating.

The Associated Press’ Doug Feinberg noted this is the 627th time the school has been ranked by AP voters during Geno Auriemma’s tenure as head coach. That ties him with Tara VanDerveer for the all-time record.

UConn sits seventh in the Week 9 poll after improving to 11-2 with a 67-41 victory Sunday over Providence. Senior guard Paige Bueckers finished with 23 points, four rebounds, four assists and two steals in 27 minutes on the floor. Forward Sarah Strong continued her impressive freshman campaign as well, adding 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting.

It was a strong response for the Huskies after they came up just short in their highly anticipated contest against JuJu Watkins and USC. Watkins sank a pair of free throws inside the final seconds to preserve the Trojans’ 72-70 win on Dec. 21.

This time next week, Auriemma is all but guaranteed to pass VanDerveer and claim the AP poll record for himself.

UConn hits the road to play Marquette on Wednesday and then Villanova on Sunday. The Huskies will be big favorites in both matchups, and even going 0-2 may not be enough to bump them out of the Top 25 entirely for Week 10.

In a historic milestone for women’s college basketball, UConn’s legendary head coach Geno Auriemma has tied Stanford’s iconic coach Tara VanDerveer for the most weeks ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll. Auriemma’s Huskies have now been ranked at the top spot for an impressive 23 weeks, matching VanDerveer’s record.

This achievement further solidifies Auriemma’s legacy as one of the greatest coaches in the history of the sport. With 11 national championships under his belt, the Hall of Famer continues to set the bar high for success in women’s basketball.

As UConn’s dominance in the rankings continues, fans can expect more thrilling games, impressive performances, and memorable moments from Auriemma and his talented squad. Stay tuned for more updates, scores, highlights, stats, and rumors as the Huskies aim to make history once again.

Little movement took place in this week’s women’s college basketball AP Top 25 poll with the top-18 teams remaining unchanged, but it doesn’t mean the past few days were boring.

No. 4 USC used a second-half push to overcome an upset scare against now-No. 24 Michigan on Sunday. Something similar happened to No. 6 LSU, as the Tigers struggled against Albany until the last two quarters.

UConn tried something different with their starting lineup by trading Ice Brady for Jana El Alfy on Sunday vs. Providence. The team as a whole still has a lot of room for improvement, but Paige Bueckers registered her fifth straight 20-point game in the 67-41 win. The Huskies remained No. 7 this week, helping Geno Auriemma tie former Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer for the most appearances with one school with a total of 627.

Meanwhile, South Carolina collected a dominant 93-47 win against Wofford on Sunday, with five Gamecocks reaching double-figures in scoring and all 10 players recording at least one bucket. That win marked South Carolina’s 65th consecutive at home.

The University of Connecticut women’s basketball team has maintained its spot at No. 7 in the latest rankings, as head coach Geno Auriemma continues to make history with his legendary coaching career.

Auriemma, who has led the Huskies to 11 national championships and countless conference titles, recently surpassed the 1,100-win mark, solidifying his status as one of the greatest coaches in college basketball history.

Despite facing tough competition in the loaded landscape of women’s college basketball, UConn has remained a top contender year after year, thanks to Auriemma’s leadership and the talent of his players.

As the season progresses, all eyes will be on UConn as they aim to climb the rankings and make another deep run in the NCAA tournament. With Auriemma at the helm, anything is possible for the Huskies.

  • UConn’s Geno Auriemma ties record; UCLA still No. 1 in AP poll

UConn’s Geno Auriemma ties record; UCLA still No. 1 in AP poll

UConn coach Geno Auriemma moved into a tie with Tara VanDerveer for the most appearances with one school in the women’s basketball AP Top 25 as the Huskies remained seventh in the poll Monday.

Auriemma has now led UConn to 627 appearances in the poll in his 40 years at the school, matching VanDerveer’s mark at Stanford before her retirement. She also had Ohio State ranked 27 times when the Hall of Fame coach was in charge of that school before joining the Cardinal and holds the overall record by a coach for appearances in the poll.

Auriemma passed VanDerveer’s NCAA career wins record earlier in the season and has 1,224 victories now after his team routed Providence on Sunday.

After a week when many schools played only a single game, UCLA, South Carolina and Notre Dame remained the top three teams and the first 18 schools were unchanged. The Bruins, Gamecocks and Irish all had routs in their lone games of the week, winning by an average of nearly 41 points. Every school in the country was off last week until Friday — a chance to recharge for the three-month sprint to the NCAA tournament.

UCLA received 30 of the 32 first-place votes from a national media panel. South Carolina and Notre Dame each garnered one. USC, Texas and LSU followed Notre Dame. Maryland was eighth, finally putting away Michigan State to remain unbeaten with the 72-66 victory on Sunday.

Oklahoma and Ohio State rounded out the first 10 teams. The Sooners have a busy week ahead with games against rival Texas and No. 15 Tennessee on the road. It’s the first SEC road test for Oklahoma and could prove to be a high-scoring game.

    Moving around

Michigan State dropped two spots to No. 21 after falling to Maryland, which moved Alabama and California both up a spot. Michigan’s loss at USC dropped the Wolverines one place to 24th with Iowa moving up to 23rd.

    Home sweet home

South Carolina extended its home winning streak to 65 games with a victory over Wofford on Sunday. The Gamecocks are four victories short of making the top five all-time home streaks. Baylor, UConn and Tennessee all won 69 straight games at home to tie for the fourth-longest all time in Division I history. The Huskies hold the top two marks with 99- and 98-game runs. Stanford is third (82).

    Conference breakdown

The Southeastern Conference finished off 2024 with eight teams in the poll for the second consecutive week to lead the way. The Big Ten is next with seven. The ACC has six while the Big 12 has three and the Big East one.

UConn’s Geno Auriemma ties record; UCLA still No. 1 in AP poll

Legendary UConn women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma has once again made history, tying the all-time record for career wins in NCAA Division I women’s basketball. Auriemma’s latest milestone comes after his Huskies defeated the St. John’s Red Storm, bringing his career win total to an impressive 1,098.

Despite Auriemma’s incredible accomplishment, the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team continues to dominate the AP poll, holding onto the top spot for another week. Led by head coach Mick Cronin, the Bruins have been a force to be reckoned with this season, boasting a perfect record and showing no signs of slowing down.

As March Madness approaches, all eyes will be on both Auriemma and UCLA as they look to make their mark on college basketball history. Stay tuned for more updates on these two powerhouse programs as they continue their pursuit of greatness.
