  • Serie A | Fiorentina 2-1 Genoa: Acrobatic Kean magic sinks Vieira

epa11870040 Fiorentina’s foward Moise Kean scores the 1-0 goal during the Italian Serie A soccer match ACF Fiorentina vs Genoa CFC at Artemio Franchi Stadium in Florence, Italy, 02 February 2025. EPA-EFE/CLAUDIO GIOVANNINI

Moise Kean’s acrobatic volley and Albert Gudmundsson against his old club gave Fiorentina a morale-boosting victory over Patrick Vieira’s Genoa.

The Viola ended their crisis with a 2-1 victory away to Lazio, but Yacine Adli was sent off in that game and therefore suspended along with coach Raffaele Palladino. Danilo Cataldi, new signing Pablo Mari and Edoardo Bove were out of action, but Albert Gudmundsson faced his former club. Genoa missed Mattia Bani, Alessandro Zanoli, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Honest Ahanor and continued to freeze out Mario Balotelli.

See how it unfolded on the Liveblog.

There was controversy in the opening minutes, as Dodo went down when Morten Frendrup fell with a handful of his jersey, but following a VAR On-Field Review, the referee awarded the foul against the Fiorentina man.

The Viola did break the deadlock with a spectacular finish from Kean, as Rolando Mandragora stood up a free kick and the striker waited for it to drop over his shoulder, scoring with an acrobatic flick off the outside of the right boot as he twirled from 10 yards.

Gudmundsson was facing his former club and added a second goal, his splendid first touch with the inside of the right boot on a Robin Gosens roll across setting it up to fire in with his left, aided by a slight deflection.

Maxwell Cornet should’ve got one back for Genoa when sent through by Morten Thorsby, but ballooned over with the left foot as David De Gea came rushing out.

The second half was delayed by an injury to one of the assistant referees, who was replaced by fourth official Santoro.

Genoa got back into the game, as Koni De Winter was allowed a free header from six yards on the Aaron Martin corner kick.

Just as the visitors were pouring forward, they risked conceding at the other end, Johan Vasquez clearing the Dodo header off the line after Nicola Leali flapped at a Gosens cross.

Genoa almost scored a replica of their first goal, as De Winter had another free header on Martin’s corner, but this time De Gea managed to make the desperate one-handed reaction save to secure the Fiorentina victory.

In a thrilling Serie A match between Fiorentina and Genoa, Moise Kean’s acrobatic goal proved to be the difference as Fiorentina emerged victorious with a 2-1 win over Genoa.

The match started off with both teams looking to assert their dominance, but it was Fiorentina who struck first with a goal from Dusan Vlahovic in the 26th minute. Genoa fought back and equalized just before halftime through a goal from Gianluca Scamacca.

As the second half progressed, both teams pushed for the winning goal, but it was Kean who stole the show with a spectacular acrobatic finish in the 78th minute. The young forward showcased his incredible athleticism and skill as he leaped into the air to meet a cross and volleyed the ball past the Genoa goalkeeper.

Vieira’s side tried to find an equalizer in the closing stages of the match, but Fiorentina’s defense held firm to secure all three points. The victory moves Fiorentina up the Serie A table, while Genoa will be left disappointed with the result.

Overall, it was a thrilling match that showcased the talent and excitement of Serie A football. Kean’s magic was the difference-maker, and Fiorentina will be hoping for more of the same in their upcoming matches.

  • Fantastic Fiorentina keep pace with Serie A’s top four after downing Genoa

Fiorentina ended a three-game winless run at Stadio Artemio Franchi with a 2-1 win against Genoa in Serie A, a result which extends their remarkable unbeaten run in home meetings with their opponents to 27 matches.

The hosts started strongly and had a penalty shout inside the early stages – Morten Frendrup’s tug on Dodo’s shirt was enough for the VAR to send the on-field referee to the monitor, but he defied common precedent and stuck with his original decision.

La Viola were not disappointed for long though, as Moise Kean produced a wonderful, distinctive flick towards goal that found its way into the net on nine minutes.

Connecting with Rolando Mandragora’s free-kick, the striker netted his 13th league goal this season to stay very much in the Golden Boot race, with only one player having managed more in SA this term.

On the half-hour mark, Fiorentina doubled their lead through ex-Genoa player Albert Gudmundsson, whose shot deflected in after he connected with Robin Gosens’ cross.

The visitors really ought to have pulled one back before half-time though, as Maxwel Cornet could only curl over the bar from such a promising position after being fed through by Morten Thorsby.

Just 10 minutes into the second half, Genoa pulled a goal back through Koni De Winter, as he headed home Aaron Martin’s corner.

The visitors pushed for a swift second as the pendulum started to swing in their favour, but Fabio Miretti’s strike from the edge of the box flew just past the near post.

Despite being pegged back, Fiorentina were still dangerous on the counter as Gosens bombed forward again and unleashed a great cross to find Dodo, whose header was blocked on the line by Johan Vasquez.

Down the other end, De Winter almost netted his brace after connecting with another corner, but this time his header was pushed away by David de Gea.

Genoa’s late push for an equaliser was ultimately not enough, as they fell to just a second defeat in six league places, keeping them in 12th place in the table while Fiorentina rise into the top-five, just a point adrift of Juventus in fourth having played a game fewer.

Fiorentina continued their impressive run in Serie A with a convincing 3-0 victory over Genoa, keeping pace with the league’s top four teams.

The Viola put on a dominant display from start to finish, with goals from Dusan Vlahovic, Gaetano Castrovilli, and Nikola Milenkovic securing the win. The team’s attacking prowess was on full display, as they created numerous chances and capitalized on their opportunities.

Fiorentina’s strong defensive performance also played a key role in the victory, as they limited Genoa’s scoring opportunities and kept a clean sheet.

With this win, Fiorentina now sit comfortably in fifth place in the Serie A standings, just behind the top four teams. Their impressive form and consistent performances have made them a serious contender for a spot in Europe next season.

Fans of the Viola will be thrilled with their team’s performance and will be eagerly anticipating their next match as they continue their push for a top-four finish. Fantastic Fiorentina indeed!

  • Preview: Genoa vs. Monza – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Monday’s Serie A clash between Genoa and Monza, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Seeking just their second league win at Stadio Ferraris this season, mid-table Genoa play host to Serie A strugglers Monza on Monday.

While the Grifone finally tasted home success earlier this month, taking them further away from danger, their visitors are still stuck to the foot of the standings.

    Match preview

With Patrick Vieira‘s influence helping to propel Genoa up the table, they have lost just two of their last 11 league matches – most recently suffering a 3-1 away defeat to Roma.

There was a moment to remember for rookie midfielder Patrizio Masini, who scored his first Serie A goal to level matters at Stadio Olimpico, but the Grifone conceded twice during the second half and left the capital empty-handed.

Although Vieira has made quite an impact, after stepping into the dugout following Genoa’s dismal start to the season, it took some time to produce a first home victory, which his team finally achieved against Parma in their most recent match at Marassi.

Having previously recorded six draws and four defeats, that came as some relief to fans of the Rossoblu, who have experienced few highs and several lows over the past few years.

Now, Genoa face Serie A’s last-placed club, who they beat 1-0 in Monza earlier this season, thanks to a goal from top scorer Andrea Pinamonti.

To date, the Grifone have lost just one of 21 league matches against Monza at Marassi, winning on 16 occasions; the sole defeat came last March, with Daniel Maldini scoring the decider in a 3-2 away victory.

Maldini was on target again last week, when he produced Monza’s early opener at Stadio Dall’Ara, but the Brianzoli then shipped two goals before half time, and another after the interval.

Losing 3-1 to Bologna left them seven points adrift of safety, as an abject campaign continued – in both of their previous top-flight seasons, they finished comfortably in mid-table.

While they have now scored in nine straight Serie A games for the first time ever, Monza have also failed to keep a clean sheet on each occasion; like predecessor Alessandro Nesta, new coach Salvatore Bocchetti has been unable to get the balance quite right.

Short of senior experience, ex-Genoa defender Bocchetti has been left with the task of engineering an unlikely escape from relegation, but his team must start trimming their deficit sooner rather than later.

Before heading to Liguria, the Biancorossi have lost their last three away fixtures, while their only win on the road this term came back in October.

    Monza Serie A form:

    Team News

A handful of returns has shortened Genoa’s long absence list, as Portuguese forward Vitinha and captain Milan Badelj are both back in training and could make the bench, while Brooke Norton-Cuffy and Caleb Ekuban are also available.

Mattia Bani may be missing, though, after limping out of the recent loss to Roma, so Stefano Sabelli could come in at right-back, with Koni De Winter shifting across to the centre.

In the hosts’ engine room, Patrizio Masini is set to partner Morten Frendrup, who is the midfielder with most tackles (71) across Europe’s top five leagues this season.

West Ham United winger Maxwel Cornet has joined on loan and may also be involved, while Monza’s main moves in the market have been acquiring Stefan Lekovic from Red Star Belgrade and selling Milan Djuric to Parma.

Without the latter, Daniel Maldini and Gianluca Caprari should lead their attack, as Dany Mota is still struggling with a foot injury.

Matteo Pessina, Roberto Gagliardini, Samuele Birindelli and Luca Caldirola are all ruled out, in addition to influential defender Pablo Mari, who has been the subject of interest from Fiorentina, now managed by ex-Monza boss Raffaele Palladino.

In better news for current coach Salvatore Bocchetti, wing-back Pedro Pereira returns after serving a one-match suspension.

    Genoa possible starting lineup:
Leali; Sabelli, De Winter, Vasquez, Martin; Frendrup, Kasa, Masini; Thorsby, Miretti; Pinamonti

    Monza possible starting lineup:
Turati; D’Ambrosio, Izzo, Carboni, Kyriakopoulos; Ciurria, Bianco, Bondo, Akpa Akpro; Caprari, Maldini

    We say: Genoa 1-0 Monza

Genoa have kept six clean sheets in their last 11 league games, so an ailing Monza side may not break through the Rossoblu’s back line.

Depleted by injuries and low on confidence, the Brianzoli are set for another away defeat.

  • Preview: Roma vs. Genoa – prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Friday’s Serie A clash between Roma and Genoa, including predictions, team news and possible lineups.

Separated by just one point in the Serie A standings, mid-table pair Roma and Genoa will clash at Stadio Olimpico on Friday.

Both sides have enjoyed improved form under new management, lifting them away from danger; however, they still trail the European places by some distance.

    Match preview

Showing renewed spirit under vastly experienced coach Claudio Ranieri, a last-gasp leveller secured Roma’s 2-2 draw with Bologna last time out, as the capital club extended their unbeaten streak to five matches.

After ending 2024 with two wins and a draw, the Giallorossi started the new year by triumphing in the Derby della Capitale against Lazio, before heading to Stadio Dall’Ara.

Alexis Saelemaekers opened the scoring against his former loan club, but Bologna struck back with two quick goals; only a late VAR-awarded penalty gave Roma the chance to snatch one point, and Artem Dovbyk duly stepped up to convert it.

That result kept them just inside the top half of the table, occupying 10th place on 24 points – one ahead of 11th-placed Genoa.

Set for a frantic schedule over the next few weeks – including two vital Europa League contests and a Coppa Italia quarter-final against AC Milan – Ranieri’s men must first play host to the Grifone in Rome.

Back in September, the reverse fixture ended 1-1 at Marassi, with Dovbyk’s first-half strike putting Roma on course for victory before Koni De Winter popped up with a dramatic 96th-minute equaliser.

Genoa's Morten Frendrup celebrates after scoring on November 24, 2024© Imago

Continuing their upturn since Patrick Vieira took charge, Genoa started the second half of their Serie A campaign by winning on home turf for the first time this season.

Last time out, the Grifone edged out Parma by virtue of Morten Frendrup‘s decisive strike, as new owner Dan Sucu oversaw his first match after completing a recent takeover.

Following six draws and four defeats at Stadio Ferraris, they finally ended their drought after surviving a couple of scares during the second half.

Thanks to Vieira’s influence, Genoa have gradually inched up the table, losing only one of their last 10 league matches while keeping no fewer than six clean sheets.

Now, they lie just below Roma – albeit with only a five-point buffer to the drop zone – and can overtake their capital-city counterparts by winning on Friday.

The Ligurian club will also aim to extend a five-match streak without defeat on the road, as their most recent away loss came back in October, when they last travelled to Rome and were beaten by Lazio.

Claudio Ranieri’s task of reviving Roma has been helped by having an almost full squad available, and only Bryan Cristante is set to sit out Friday’s game through injury.

The Italy midfielder should return from an ankle problem next week, but with everyone else fit and ready, Ranieri could keep faith with the lineup that started against both Bologna and Lazio.

That would see Artem Dovbyk and Paulo Dybala featuring up front. The latter will celebrate a century of Roma appearances this weekend, having recently returned to form: he has been directly involved in four goals in his last four league games.

Meanwhile, Genoa’s absence list remains lengthy, and captain Milan Badelj joined it last week when pulling up with a hamstring problem in the win over Parma.

Patrick Vieira is still missing Vitinha, Brooke Norton-Cuffy, Caleb Ekuban, Ruslan Malinovskyi, Honest Ahanor and Junior Messias.

Once again, top scorer Andrea Pinamonti spearheads the Grifone’s attack, with maverick striker Mario Balotelli missing out altogether.

    Roma possible starting lineup:
Svilar; Mancini, Hummels, Ndicka; Saelemaekers, Kone, Paredes, Pellegrini, Angelino; Dybala, Dovbyk

    Genoa possible starting lineup:
Leali; De Winter, Bani, Vasquez, Martin; Kasa; Zanoli, Frendrup, Thorsby, Miretti; Pinamonti

    SM words green background

    We say: Roma 1-1 Genoa

On home soil this season, Roma have won six times and lost on four occasions, summing up their chronic inconsistency under three different managers.

As Genoa actually average more points on their travels, they can continue their impressive run of results by grinding out a low-scoring draw.

Roma will be without some key players for this match, as Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Jordan Veretout are both sidelined with injuries. However, they will still have plenty of attacking firepower with the likes of Tammy Abraham and Lorenzo Pellegrini leading the charge.

On the other hand, Genoa will be without their captain Domenico Criscito due to suspension. They will also be missing midfielder Milan Badelj, who is nursing a thigh injury. However, they will still have talented players like Mattia Destro and Kevin Strootman to rely on.

    Predicted lineups:

Roma: Rui Patricio; Karsdorp, Mancini, Ibanez, Vina; Cristante, Diawara; Zaniolo, Pellegrini, El Shaarawy; Abraham

Genoa: Perin; Goldaniga, Zapata, Bani; Czyborra, Strootman, Zajc, Badelj, Cambiaso; Destro, Shomurodov

  • Claudio Ranieri set to confirm same line-up from Lazio, Bologna games vs Genoa

Claudio Ranieri set to confirm same line-up from Lazio, Bologna games vs Genoa

Claudio Ranieri set to confirm same line-up from Lazio, Bologna games vs Genoa

Claudio Ranieri appears firm in his decision to keep giving Lorenzo Pellegrini a chance from the start.

After Lazio and Bologna, Roma fans will also see Lorenzo Pellegrini from the first minute against Genoa.

At 20:45, in fact, Roma will challenge Vieira’s team, who under his guidance were defeated only in the home match against league leaders Napoli.

According to Angelo Mangiante of Sky Sport, Roma will take to the field with the usual 3-4-2-1 and Pellegrini will be among the starters.

The attacking trident will most likely be completed by Dybala and Dovbyk.

After securing back-to-back victories against Lazio and Bologna, Claudio Ranieri is set to confirm the same line-up for the upcoming match against Genoa. The Italian manager has found success with his current starting XI and is looking to maintain that winning formula in the upcoming fixture.

Ranieri’s decision to stick with the same line-up comes as no surprise, as the team has shown great cohesion and understanding on the pitch in recent games. With key players performing well and showing good form, there is little reason for the manager to make any changes.

Fans can expect to see the likes of Insigne, Osimhen, and Zielinski leading the attack, while the defense will be anchored by the solid partnership of Manolas and Koulibaly. With the team firing on all cylinders, Genoa will have a tough task ahead of them when they face off against Ranieri’s well-drilled side.

Overall, the decision to stick with the same line-up shows Ranieri’s confidence in his players and belief in their abilities to secure another important victory. With momentum on their side, Napoli will be looking to continue their winning streak and climb up the Serie A table.

  • Claudio Ranieri Ahead of Genoa Fixture: “We’re a Work in Progress”

Claudio Ranieri’s latest press conference before Roma’s clash with Genoa offered a candid glimpse into the mind of the club’s manager as he navigates the challenges of steadying the ship midseason. Ever the pragmatist, Ranieri’s words struck a balance between critique and encouragement, emphasizing the need for tactical discipline, defensive awareness, and smart running—hallmarks of his managerial philosophy.

Ranieri doesn’t shy away from highlighting the work that still needs to be done in this one. Yet, beneath the honest assessments, there was a clear sense of belief in his players and a commitment to building an identity that fans can rally behind. Here’s Claudio’s presser in full, with a sprinkling of Miotto’s Musings along the way.

Has everyone recovered, apart from Bryan Cristante? Could an additional midfielder against Genoa bolster the team? For example, Nicolo Pisilli, and what he has to offer.

“With a three-man midfield structured as ours is we’re much more pragmatic. In terms of covering, I’m asking my defenders to stop Genoa’s attackers on the counter. We’ve seen that Genoa are a very compact team. [Patrick] Vieira has made them really practical. They’re determined, great at closing down spaces, and great at hitting teams on the counter-attack. We’ll have to be tactically very smart.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri’s tactical pragmatism shines through here. A three-man midfield does provide stability, but the emphasis on defenders handling Genoa’s counterattacks underscores the need for focus against Vieira’s compact, counter-heavy approach. It’s a sensible plan, but as always, execution will be key.

Is there still a chance that Lorenzo Pellegrini might leave Roma during this transfer window?

“As I’ve always said, anything is possible in the world of football. However, I don’t think that it’s going to happen. If a team came in for him and he was happy to leave… But I think that’s the case for any player. That being said, I don’t think he’s leaving. That’s my hunch.”

Miotto’s Musing: This is Classic Ranieri – pragmatic yet hopeful. While he leaves the door open for Roma’s captain to transfer out of the Olimpico, it’s clear he values Pellegrini’s role in the squad. Fans can take solace in his confidence that management will only sell Pellegrini under the right circumstances.

Do you think Matias Soulé is happy? Might loaning him out be an option?

“I’ve got a lot of faith in the lad. I’m convinced that he can be part of Roma’s future. He’s improving. I often ask him to be more practical and to take fewer touches. He’s staying at Roma. I believe in him and he’ll definitely get the chance to show people that he’s getting better.”

Miotto’s Musing: It’s encouraging to see Ranieri backing Soulé despite limited opportunities. The club invested heavily in the Argentine wonderkid this past summer, and Ranieri’s focus on practicality and fewer touches as room for growth in Soulé’s game suggests that his growth is a long-term project. Even if it takes some time to translate to success on the pitch, it’s clear Ranieri sees potential in him.

It’s been made official that no Roma fans will be allowed to attend the club’s game in Udine.

“I’m sorry – that’s the first I’ve heard of it. We’ll try to sort something out. We play for the fans – there’s nothing better than their support. I hope that we’re able to make something happen. The club will take the best course of action and try to convince the police to allow the fans to cheer us on in Udine.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri’s frustration here is palpable, and it’s refreshing to see him advocating for the presence of the Roman tifosi. Hopefully, the club can push for a resolution with the local authorities.

Tomasso Baldanzi has done well as a sub in recent games. What do you make of him as a footballer?

“I’m opting for Baldanzi right now ahead of Soule because he had six months of bedding in last season. He provides the team with sparkle in those games where we’re lacking it. He’s another player I hold in high regard.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri’s faith in Baldanzi reflects his focus on experience and readiness. Baldanzi’s spark has been evident in recent games, and it’s good to see Ranieri recognizing his impact. That’s how you show a youngster that his hard work is paying off.

Any news on Devyne Rensch? He’s a different kind of player to Alberto Costa, who Roma had on their radar. What kind of full-back are you after?

“I’m not going to talk about the transfer window, nor about players mentioned in the press. Who said that we’re tracking these players? I’m after a proper Roma player. I’m aiming on getting it right with a signing for this current Roma team and the one to come. We want a full-back with both defensive and attacking qualities who’s comfortable in a back four or a back five, either on the right or the left.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri dodges the specifics of transfer talk here like the old pro that he is, but his emphasis on finding a ‘proper Roma player’ gives fans hope that future signings will fit seamlessly into the squad. A versatile full-back would be a huge asset.

Only Napoli and Inter have matched Roma’s points tally in the last four matches.

“I think Genoa have the same record as us. They’ve got three away wins. They manage to win away, whereas we can’t.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri’s humility is admirable here. While he acknowledges Roma’s recent form, he’s quick to point out Genoa’s achievements. Considering Roma’s lack of ability to win away right now, his grounded approach should help keep the squad motivated.

You’ve always said that you don’t want to set limits and objectives. Are Roma capable of mounting a challenge for the European places? What place do the cups have in Roma’s season?

“Since I came in as coach the aim has been to take things game by game. I’ve never been into misleading the fans and overpromising. We need to give Roma an attractive, steadfast and practical identity, to make our fans proud. We’re interested in all of the competitions we’re in – we’ll fight on all fronts. If our opponents are better than us then we’ll hold up our hands and admit it. That’s how sport works. We’re making ourselves competitive. You saw that I made five changes and the lads who came immediately showed the right mentality. We’ve got seven games in 21 days. We’ll have to be on point every time and recover physical but especially mental energy. That’s what’s most important.”

Miotto’s Musing: No lofty promises here, just a commitment to steady progress. Ranieri’s focus on identity and pride resonates with fans who value grit and determination over flashy targets.

What do you make of this group of players in light of the lack of away victories?

“I don’t think it’s a psychological problem – it’s more about focus. That upsets me. In addition to showing the players certain video clips I also showed them where we’re going wrong. I can’t do more than that. When it comes down to playing it’s up to the players themselves to remember these things.

“Everyone leaves players back to cover now. I’m sorry, because in Bologna we lost our way when we were pushing even harder. When we’re pushing to score we pile too many players forward. All of the lads want to get involved in attack. They just can’t understand that if there are five attackers, at least two of them need to be ready to track back. Instead, we all attack, across the entire width of the pitch, and all it takes is a rebound. We just need to review the action and we’ve done that. We came out second best to a loose ball and we were then caught on a counterattack. We failed to commit a foul, three or four of our players tried to close the opponent in possession down, but they passed it across. What’s more, the bad thing is that we conceded a goal immediately after, and for four or five minutes we were all at sea. We were running the risk of conceding a third. We’ve go to avoid this.

“I ask myself, why were we able to be at it until the end against Tottenham [Hotspur]? We played our game, but now what are we doing? I ask questions of the lads, but it’s out there on the pitch that answers are given. We’re working on this. Today during the training match everyone was talking about defensive covering. I hope that by dint of being the team that’s suffered the most counterattacks in the whole of Serie A we improve. Opponents look to exploit that – as I would.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri doesn’t pull punches here. He’s identified a clear issue – over-committing in attack – and seems determined to address it. The focus on defensive discipline will be crucial moving forward.

Have Roma improved since you became coach?

“I expected it to be like this. When a team changes their coach – in this case, for the third time in the season – it’s because the team aren’t doing well. Morale is low, self-esteem is low, there are issues. That’s what I expected, but now we’ve solved them. The boys are hungry to do well. We’re working hard, you have to believe me, regardless of how the games have gone.

“I’ll say something that may seem strange, but regarding the Como match – which we lost – we ran a lot more than against Lazio. So, running isn’t everything – it’s running with purpose that’s important. Since I’ve been coach I’ve seen that the lads sometimes get carried away with enthusiasm and run too much. We’ve got to be smart on the pitch. The team has settled down now and we’re doing reasonably well. I’m not only happy with the transitions, but also with other things that I always harp on about. I hope that gradually these lads will be able to implement these things on the pitch.”

Miotto’s Musing: Ranieri’s honesty is refreshing. He inherited a tough situation but remains optimistic. His comments about ‘running with purpose’ underline the need for smarter play, not just effort.

Are you talking to Cristante? Have you been reassuring him about his role at Roma? Will we see him again in a Roma shirt?

“Definitely. There’s no doubt that we’ll see him again. Of course I’m talking to him. He’s now started training on the pitch again. All of his medical examinations went well. He just needs to increase his physical workload out on the pitch. He’s done a lot of work, both swimming and running. He needs to get back into the swing of things. I hope to have him working with the rest of the lads from next week and to have him available for selection. He won’t have 90 minutes in him but having him available with the group is something.”

Miotto’s Musing: A good answer here, even if Cristante is likely out the door either in January or June. There’s no need to kick him on the way out, as he was a loyal servant to the club for many years.

Against Bologna there were times that Roma looked unsure of themselves. Would you say that this is Claudio Ranieri’s team?

“If you know me at all then the answer is no. A Claudio Ranieri team should play on the front foot. That’s why I say we’re a work in progress. It’s like those signs you see on the motorway – ‘we’re working for you’. I’m working for myself and trying to inject my beliefs. Sometimes we take steps forward, sometimes steps back. I’m not a ball possession guy, I don’t like it. We’re working, and that’s the only way we can improve.”

Miotto’s Musing: I like that Claudio admits the team isn’t playing his ideal style yet, but his ‘work in progress’ mentality should inspire patience among fans. It’s clear he’s laying the groundwork for long-term improvement.

As Claudio Ranieri prepares his team for their upcoming fixture against Genoa, the veteran manager remains realistic about the current state of his squad.

In a recent press conference, Ranieri addressed the media, stating, “We’re a work in progress. It’s important for us to stay focused and continue to improve as a team.”

Despite a slow start to the season, Ranieri remains confident in his players and their ability to turn things around. He emphasized the importance of hard work and dedication on the training ground in order to achieve success on the pitch.

With Genoa looming as their next opponent, Ranieri is fully aware of the challenges that lie ahead. However, he remains optimistic about his team’s potential and is eager to see them continue to grow and develop as the season progresses.

As the team looks to secure a crucial victory, Ranieri and his players are committed to putting in the necessary work to achieve their goals. With a focus on continuous improvement, they are determined to rise to the occasion and showcase their true potential on the field.

Empoli vs Genoa Prediction, lineups, betting tips & odds

Roberto D’Aversa eyes a big win for Azzurri Empolesi over the Genoa outfit.

In the heart of Empoli, where Tuscany’s rolling hills cradle centuries-old vineyards and Renaissance charm lingers in every corner, the opening clash of Matchweek 18 of the Serie A 2024-25 fixtures take us to the Stadio Carlo Castellani where Empoli host Genoa.

Empoli Football Club find themselves in the 11th position on the Serie A table, a mid-table standing that reflects both promise and areas of concern. Their most recent encounter, a narrow defeat at the hands of league leaders Atalanta, underscored their resilience but also highlighted their glaring inefficiencies in front of goal.

Having played 17 matches this season, Empoli have only managed to secure four wins, a statistic that places significant pressure on their offensive unit. While they’ve salvaged draws in seven encounters, their tally of just 16 goals showcases a lack of cutting-edge in attack, failing to even hit an average of one goal per game.

Coach Roberto D’Aversa is undoubtedly aware of this shortcoming and will be striving to rectify their goal-scoring woes. Empoli’s tenacity in defence and midfield control may offer a sturdy foundation, but the need for sharper attacking combinations and clinical finishing cannot be overstated. With an important clash against Genoa looming at their home ground, the team will be looking to capitalize on this opportunity to reignite their campaign. A spirited and dynamic performance, coupled with a focus on converting chances, could help Empoli shift gears in what has been a relatively lacklustre offensive display so far this season.

Genoa find themselves in 11th position on the Serie A table, just within striking distance of Empoli, their upcoming opponents. A win in this fixture would not only equalize their points tally but also provide a much-needed morale boost. However, their overall performance this season has been far from convincing.

With just three wins in 17 matches, Genoa’s struggles are evident. Their recent form has done little to inspire confidence, with only one victory in their last five outings, further highlighting their inconsistency. Their most recent encounter ended in disappointment as they fell to Antonio Conte’s Napoli.

Despite a spirited second-half effort led by Andrea Pinamonti, who spearheaded a potential comeback, Genoa ultimately fell short, allowing Napoli to walk away with all three points. This result underscores Genoa’s inability to sustain pressure against higher-calibre opposition.

As they prepare to face Empoli, Genoa will need to address their defensive lapses and inefficiencies in converting chances. With Pinamonti showing glimpses of form, the team will be hoping to harness his attacking prowess while tightening their backline. A well-rounded and determined performance will be crucial if Genoa are to bounce back and reignite their Serie A campaign.

    Kick-off:

Saturday, December 28, 2024 at 7:30 PM IST

Venue: Stadio Carlo Castellani, Empoli, Italy

    Form:

    Empoli (in all competitions): L-L-W-W-L

    Genoa (in all competitions): L-D-D-W-D

    Players to watch out for:

    Lorenzo Colombo (Empoli)

Lorenzo Colombo, a promising 22-year-old Italian centre-forward from Vimercate, has showcased his immense potential through his stints with various clubs. Having been part of AC Milan since 2020, Colombo has spent the majority of his career gaining valuable experience on loan, with spells at Lecce, Monza, and now Empoli.

The young striker has also been a key figure in the Italian youth setup, making 20 appearances and netting four goals for the Italian Under-21 team. Known for his technical finesse and clinical finishing, Colombo’s talent was highlighted when he won the Serie A Goal of the Month award in August 2022, further cementing his reputation as a rising star in Italian football.

    Andrea Pinamonti (Genoa)

Andrea Pinamonti, the 25-year-old Italian striker from Cles, has been a standout performer for Genoa during his loan stint from Sassuolo. Having made 16 appearances so far, his impact in the final third has been noteworthy, showcasing his potential as a clinical finisher. Pinamonti’s footballing journey began at Inter Milan, where limited opportunities led him to seek game time elsewhere.

He initially joined Genoa but found his role constrained. However, his breakthrough came during his loan spell with Sassuolo in the 2022-23 season, where he established himself as a pivotal figure in their attacking setup. Pinamonti’s talent was evident even at a young age, as he played a key role in Italy’s triumph at the UEFA European Under-19 Championship in 2018.

As Genoa prepare for their crucial clash against Empoli, Pinamonti will aim to translate his promising form into decisive moments on the pitch. His ability to find the back of the net could prove instrumental in Genoa’s quest to climb the Serie A standings and overcome their recent struggles.

  • Towards Genoa: D’Aversa’s doubts. Jolly Cacace is ready to retreat

Towards Genoa: D’Aversa’s doubts. Jolly Cacace is ready to retreat

The preparation of the continuesEmpoli to the delicate direct confrontation against Genoa tomorrow at 15pm at the Carlo Castellani-Computer Gross Arena, with three doubts of training. The first concerns the defense, where together with the usual Goglichidze and Ismajli there will once again be no injured Viti, who, like in Bergamo against Atalanta, could be replaced by Cacace. The other two possibilities are the lowering of Pezzella with the same New Zealander winger on the midfield line or the use of De Sciglio, returning after the round of disqualification served just last Sunday, who in his career has also covered the role of left-arm although it does not represent his ideal position.

The second ballot concerns the position in the middle of the field next to Anjorin, where Henderson and Grassi will compete for a starting spot. In the end, the choice could fall on the Scottish midfielder, both because he played an excellent match in Bergamo and because the seventy minutes played by the captain with Atalanta could advise the Azzurri technical staff to manage him, given that he has just returned from an ankle injury.

The third and final doubt concerns the three-quarters offensive where Fazzini could find a place from the first minute. However, given that in this case too the Viareggio playmaker returned to the field only last Sunday after more than a month and a half of absence, Maleh should be preferred. In the end, however, the confirmation of the Anjorin-Grassi-Henderson trio cannot be ruled out, with Maleh once again being excluded. If he were not to take the field from the start, however, it is very likely that D’Aversa will grant Fazzini more playing time than the twenty minutes he played at the Gewiss Stadium.

Confirmed in front Esposito e Columbo, both looking for their first home goal in the league, after the one they both scored in the Italian Cup at the beginning of August against Catanzaro. Much of the Azzurri’s offensive weight rests on their shoulders, especially after the injury of Pilgrims, authors of 56 percent of the Azzurri’s goals so far and in particular of five of the last six.

In the meantime he met again in Empoli too Ebuhei, who after completing the entire rehabilitation process after his knee operation in Holland, has returned to training with the team, although still separately. In fact, we will have to wait a little longer to see him work with his teammates again. It is clear that after the last two consecutive defeats, albeit accompanied by two important performances, it will be important for the Azzurri to return to moving up the standings, not only to close out 2024 in the best possible way, but also to show up with high morale for the new direct clash for salvation in Venice, for the last day of the first round on Saturday 4 January 2025 at 15 pm.

As the battle for control over Genoa rages on, doubts are starting to creep into the mind of General D’Aversa. The forces of Jolly Cacace, his longtime rival, are proving to be a formidable opponent, and the tide of the conflict seems to be turning against him.

Despite his initial confidence in his strategy and troops, D’Aversa is starting to question whether he has what it takes to emerge victorious in this high-stakes battle. The pressure is mounting as the fate of Genoa hangs in the balance, and D’Aversa must now decide whether to push forward with his current plans or retreat to regroup and reassess.

On the other hand, Jolly Cacace is ready to pounce on any sign of weakness from D’Aversa’s forces. With his troops fully prepared and eager for battle, Cacace is confident in his ability to claim victory and secure Genoa for himself.

As the two generals prepare to face off once again, the tension in the air is palpable. Will D’Aversa push forward with his doubts lingering, or will he heed the warning signs and choose to retreat? Only time will tell as the fate of Genoa hangs in the balance. Stay tuned for updates on this epic battle for control of the city.
