  • Sixers’ Joel Embiid, Paul George still out vs Celtics

It’s important to remember in Sixers land that “day-to-day” means at least a week.

The Sixers submitted their injury report for their first matchup in February against the Boston Celtics and not much has changed. Joel Embiid will miss his 15th straight game and Paul George will miss his fourth.

This will mean George will miss at least a week with this finger injury he suffered in Chicago. Despite that, Nick Nurse said he still considers PG “day-to-day.” In his most recent pregame media availability, Nurse indicated that the team’s next practice would give him a good indication of where both guys were at. The team didn’t hold one on Saturday though, just an optional shootaround.

Every time Nurse has been asked about George, he’s implied the team is still trying to figure out how they’ll protect the finger when he’s out there, whether that’s tape, a cast or a splint. It would appear they are still trying to figure that out.

If you can believe it, Embiid’s situation might be even stranger. It was pretty quiet for about a week on his front after the team announced he was once again dealing with swelling in his left knee.

Before their wins against the Lakers and Kings though, he went through a couple of intense pregame warmups, one of which was in full uniform.

Trying to parse through all this information to figure out when these two will play again feels like searching for Big Foot at this point.

There was some good news on the injury report as the team could potentially get some reserves back. Caleb Martin and Andre Drummond have both been upgraded to questionable. Both have missed substantial time in January due to lingering ailments.

KJ Martin remains out with a stress reaction in his left foot, and Jeff Dowtin Jr. and Pete Nance will be out on G-League assignments.

The Philadelphia 76ers will be without star center Joel Embiid and forward Paul George for their upcoming matchup against the Boston Celtics. Both players are still recovering from injuries and will not be available to play in the game.

Embiid, who has been dealing with a knee injury, has missed the last several games and is still listed as day-to-day. George, who has been sidelined with a hamstring injury, is also not quite ready to return to action.

The absence of these two key players will certainly be felt by the Sixers, as they look to secure a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. However, the team will need to rely on their depth and other players to step up in their absence.

The Celtics, on the other hand, will look to take advantage of the Sixers’ missing stars and secure a crucial win in the competitive Eastern Conference standings.

It will be interesting to see how both teams adjust to the absence of Embiid and George and how the game unfolds without their star players on the court.

  • George Lopez, February 15 | River Cities’ Reader

    Saturday, February 15, 8 p.m.

Rhythm City Casino Resort Event Center, 7077 Elmore Avenue, Davenport IA

An artist who has broken ground for Latino comics by embracing his ethnicity, confronting racial stereotypes, and fighting for his community on and off the stage, Grammy-nominated comedian George Lopez brings his national tour to Davenport’s Rhythm City Casino Resort Event Center on February 15, the famed funnyman beloved for six seasons as the star of his eponymous ABC sitcom, which currently ranks as one of the top-rated shows on Nick at Nite.

Born in Los Angeles in 1961, Lopez spent a number of years performing stand-up comedy before being approached by Sandra Bullock, in 2000, to produce and star in a TV comedy. Bullock was concerned about the lack of Hispanic-oriented sitcoms on American television, and pushed to get a sitcom on television that starred Hispanics without being exclusively about the Hispanic American community. Long criticized by Hispanic American groups for lack of Latinos on their television shows, ABC quickly picked up the television series, and in 2002, Lopez became one of the few Latinos to star in a television comedy series, following in the footsteps of Desi Arnaz, Freddie Prinze, and John Leguizamo. With Lopez the co-creator, writer, producer, and star George Lopez aired on ABC from 2002 to 2007, and was added to the Nick at Nite lineup in September of 2007, the show also becoming a considerable success in syndication.

Currently, the comedian is in the third season of his NBC sitcom Lopez vs Lopez, which was created by its star alongside Mayan Lopez and Debby Wolfe. The series boasts Lopez and his real-life daughter Mayan as fictionalized versions of themselves. Among the noted Hispanic performers who have guested on the comedy over the years are Mario Lopez, Harvey Guillen, Justina Machado, Danny Trejo, Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias. Beyond his television work, Lopez has enjoyed a thriving film career. His HBO Films drama Real Women Have Curves, starring America Ferrera, premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, where it received the 2002 Audience Award. He also appeared in Robert Rodriguez’s The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl in 3D, voiced the titular Papi Cortez in Disney’s Beverly Hills Chihuahua, co-starred opposite Jackie Chan in 2010’s The Spy Next Door, and recently played Uncle Rudy Reyes in 2023’s DC Extended Universe superhero film Blue Beetle. And in addition, Lopez has enjoyed literary success, his autobiography Why You Crying (co-written by Armen Keteyian) having placed in the New York Times Bestsellers top 20.

George Lopez brings his national tour to Davenport’s Event Center on February 15, admission to the 8 p.m. show is $51-101, and more information and tickets are available by calling (563)328-8000 and visiting RhythmCityCasino.com.

  • Karla Sofía Gascón’s Tweets on Muslims, George Floyd Ignite Backlash

Emilia Pérez” star Karla Sofía Gascón is under fire for a series of social media posts to her account on X, formerly known as Twitter, in which the actor appears to express controversial views on Muslims, George Floyd and diversity at the Oscars.

The posts, many of which were deleted on Thursday after they were resurfaced by journalist Sarah Hagi, were largely posted between 2020 and 2021. One example, dated Nov. 22, 2020: “I’m Sorry, Is it just my impression or is there more muslims in Spain? Every time I go to pick up my daughter from school there are more women with their hair covered and their skirts down to their heels. Next year instead of English we’ll have to teach Arabic.” (Variety has independently translated the tweets.)

Another post from Sept. 2, 2020, attached to photo of a Muslim family in a restaurant, including a woman in a burka, reads: “Islam is marvelous, without any machismo. Women are respected, and when they are so respected they are left with a little squared hole on their faces for their eyes to be visible and their mouths, but only if she behaves. Although they dress this way for their own enjoyment. How DEEPLY DISGUSTING OF HUMANITY.”

In a post from Jan. 29, 2021, Gascón’s account says that “Islam fails to comply with international rights,” and that the religions “must be banned as long as it does not comply with DDHH” — using an abbreviation for human rights in Spanish law.

The commentary appears to extend to other religions as well. In a post from Aug. 16, 2021, Gascón writes, “I am so sick of so much of this shit, of islam, of christianity, of catholicism and of all the fucking beliefs of morons that violate human rights.”

Along with her posts about Islam, Gascón posted a long thread about George Floyd just days after he was killed by a police officer, inspiring protests across the U.S. “I really think that very few people ever cared about George Floyd, a drug addict swindler, but his death has served to once again demonstrate that there are people who still consider black people to be monkeys Without rights and consider policemen to be assassins,” she posted. “They’re all wrong.”

In a follow-up post, Gascón added, “Too many things to reflect on regarding the behavior of our species every time an event occurs. Perhaps it is no longer a question of racism, but of social classes that feel threatened by each other. Maybe that’s the only real difference.”

Gascón, who is the first openly trans actor to be nominated for an Academy Award, also weighed in on the Oscar ceremony from 2021, the first held following the COVID pandemic in which “Nomadland” won best picture.

“More and more the #Oscars are looking like a ceremony for independent and protest films, I didn’t know if I was watching an Afro-Korean festival, a Black Lives Matter demonstration or the 8M,” Gascón wrote. “Apart from that, an ugly, ugly gala.”

A tweet from August 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, reads, “The Chinese vaccine, apart from the mandatory chip, comes with two spring rolls, a cat that moves its hand, 2 plastic flowers, a pop-up lantern, 3 telephone lines and one euro for your first controlled purchase.” Another tweet from February 2020 similarly takes aim at China, reading, “So many scientists in the world making bombs, so many scholars constructing objects for space, so many medicinal factories and there’s no one who can get in line with this Chinese shit. (shrug emoji) In the end, it was a tremendous show for a new variant of the flu, avian or coronavirus.”

Netflix and the Academy had no comment. Spokespeople for Gascón did not respond to requests for comment.

Gascón’s old social posts came to light following a separate controversy, in which the actor, in an interview with a Brazilian newspaper on Jan. 21, criticized campaigns online that she believed attacked her and “Emilia Pérez,” and appeared to single out the team working with fellow best actress nominee, “I’m Still Here” star Fernanda Torres.

“What I don’t like are social media teams — people who work with these people — trying to diminish our work, like me and my movie, because that doesn’t lead anywhere,” Gascón said. “You don’t need to tear down someone’s work to highlight another’s. I have never, at any point, said anything bad about Fernanda Torres or her movie. However, there are people working with Fernanda Torres tearing me and ‘Emilia Pérez’ down. That speaks more about their movie than mine.”

Video of the interview began circulating online, leading to incorrect speculation that Gascón’s interview had violated Oscar guidelines. On Jan. 29, Gascón released a statement to Variety clarifying her position.

“I am an enormous fan of Fernanda Torres and it has been wonderful getting to know her the past few months,” Gascón said. “In my recent comments, I was referencing the toxicity and violent hate speech on social media that I sadly continue to experience. Fernanda has been a wonderful ally, and no one directly associated with her has been anything but supportive and hugely generous.”

Thania Garcia contributed to this post.

Karla Sofía Gascón, a popular social media personality, has recently come under fire for her controversial tweets regarding Muslims and the death of George Floyd. In a series of tweets, Gascón expressed inflammatory and offensive views towards Muslims, sparking outrage and criticism from her followers.

Many people have called out Gascón for perpetuating harmful stereotypes and spreading hate towards an entire group of people. Her tweets have been condemned as Islamophobic and discriminatory, with many urging her to educate herself and apologize for her offensive comments.

In addition to her comments on Muslims, Gascón also faced backlash for her insensitive remarks about the tragic death of George Floyd. Many accused her of downplaying the severity of police brutality and racial injustice, further fueling the controversy surrounding her online presence.

As the backlash continues to grow, Gascón has yet to publicly address the criticism or apologize for her remarks. However, the online community remains vigilant in holding her accountable for her harmful rhetoric and calling for greater awareness and understanding of marginalized communities.

  • Eva Longoria on Playing a ‘Naughty Chef’ Opposite George Clooney in Nespresso Ad (Exclusive)

Nespresso’s latest campaign stars George Clooney as a detective tasked with uncovering the thief who stole the brand’s colorful coffee capsules from an heiress — and Eva Longoria plays one of the prime suspects.

The actress tells PEOPLE her performance in the ad wasn’t inspired by any culinary personality in particular.

“I have so many friends that are chefs,” she says. “Bobby Flay, Michael Symon — there’s so many — Danny Garcia, Ferran Adrià. Because I do the shows Searching for Mexico, Searching for Spain, I get to come across some really fantastic chefs, and none of them are like my character.”

Longoria says they spent three days shooting the commercial in Rome, and while the actor is known to prank his pals, he was “well-behaved” on set. However, the pair still spent the time “laughing and laughing and laughing.”

The Desperate Housewives alum, 49, offered the following description for Clooney, whom she says she’s known for more than 15 years: “Funny, easygoing, lifts up everybody, lifts up the entire crew.”

“Everybody loves him,” she adds. “His energy, just to be around him is like… It’s contagious. You just have to be kind because he’s just the kindest human being.”

Longoria calls herself a “huge coffee drinker” whose morning routine revolves around the drink.

She’s especially fond of catching up with her girlfriends over coffee.

“We just all went skiing together with our kids,” she shares. “Us all being in the kitchen, I’m like, ‘Why don’t we all live together? We need to buy a big commune and live together.’ That would be my dream, to have all my friends and all their kids together.”

The cookbook author, who released My Mexican Kitchen in 2024, teamed up with another close collaborator in the kitchen last month: Brooklyn Beckham.

“I always want to cook with Brooklyn,” she says. “He’s a fantastic cook. And he’s like me. We’re both cooks. We’re not chefs. We’re just cooks. We’re just throwing s— together. His hot sauce is really amazing. But I love cooking with friends because we really just shoot the s— and have fun.”

For the past few years, the Flamin’ Hot director has been living between Spain and Mexico with her husband, José Bastón, and their 6-year-old son Santiago.

Longoria has plenty of praise for the local cuisine in both countries.

“Mexico has the best breakfasts in the world,” she says. “I feel like the rest of the world is so boring with breakfast. France is croissant, coffee. Spain is toast and coffee. America’s bacon and eggs, like, okay. Where in Mexico you have so many options. You have chilaquiles, you have molletes, you have huevos rancheros, huevos divorciados, pan dulce. It’s endless. It’s endless. So I love breakfasts in Mexico.”

    Eva Longoria.

And as for Spain, she says, “I love everything.”

“I like going to the market, buying what you’re going to cook tonight,” she says. “You have to go to the meat market to get your meat. … There are supermarkets, but for the most part you go and get what you’re cooking from different places. And that it’s just fresh. It’s just healthy. It’s clean. It’s all local. It’s always local. That tomato is literally from that farm right there. So I just love the clean eating of Spain.”

“And that’s why when I eat at 10 o’clock at night in Spain, I don’t get sick,” she adds. “I’m not like, ‘Oh, my stomach.’ I’m not full, because it’s such clean eating. Where here, I could never eat a 10 o’clock at night dinner. Are you crazy?”

Eva Longoria on Playing a ‘Naughty Chef’ Opposite George Clooney in Nespresso Ad (Exclusive)

In a recent Nespresso ad campaign, Eva Longoria takes on the role of a mischievous chef who sets out to outshine the suave George Clooney. The ad, titled “The Quest,” showcases Longoria’s comedic chops as she competes with Clooney in a culinary showdown.

Longoria spoke exclusively to Entertainment Tonight about her experience filming the ad, revealing that she had a blast playing the character of the “naughty chef.” She explained, “It was so much fun to play this mischievous character who is determined to outdo George Clooney. It was a great opportunity to showcase my comedic side and have fun with the role.”

The ad sees Longoria and Clooney engaging in a playful rivalry as they both attempt to create the perfect cup of Nespresso coffee. Longoria’s character uses her culinary skills to try and one-up Clooney, resulting in a hilarious and entertaining showdown.

Longoria also praised Clooney for his professionalism and sense of humor on set. She said, “Working with George was a dream come true. He’s such a talented actor and a great partner to work with. We had a lot of fun filming this ad together.”

  • Utah Jazz vs. Memphis Grizzlies score and analysis: Collier vs. George

Three thoughts on the Utah Jazz’s 125-103 loss to the Memphis Grizzlies from Salt Lake Tribune Jazz beat writer Andy Larsen.

    1. A new starting point guard for Utah

For the first time in a year, Keyonte George came off the bench for Saturday’s game against the Memphis Grizzlies. It’s been a rocky year in the starting lineup for George, who unfortunately hasn’t really taken any strides in year two when compared to year one.

(Keyonte George stats on Basketball Reference)

But George’s move to the bench was just as much about the play of rookie Isaiah Collier. Collier’s extremely turnover prone, and shoots with some really ugly percentages — but he ranks 16th in the NBA in assists per 36 minutes, and gets the Jazz up the floor and into plays much quicker than George. His defense is also much better. I wouldn’t call it good, yet, but better.

Both players struggled on Saturday, though. Collier shot 4-11 for eight points, with eight assists and four turnovers. George had a nearly matching eight points and seven assists, though his effort came on an ugly 3-15 shooting from the field.

I’ll be honest, I experienced some déjà vu at this decision. Ten years ago, Quin Snyder made nearly exactly the same choice on nearly exactly the same day: on January 22, 2015, he began starting rookie point guard Dante Exum over Trey Burke. Burke was the better shooter, but simply shot too much, enough that his misses piled up. He was a lackluster defender. Exum, the rookie, was the better passer and defender, but couldn’t shoot.

There are differences (Collier’s pretty aggressive downhill, whereas Exum wasn’t to start his career, for example), but the similarities are definitely there. As we later learned, neither Burke nor Exum would be the point guard of the future for the Jazz.

We don’t know what’s coming for these two new players a decade later — but I do think there is a lesson here. Generally, when two young players are fighting for playing time, coaches are going to prefer the one who fits most neatly into the structure of the rest of the group. In this case, I think it’s clear that’s Collier.

    2. Eubanks’ ejection

Drew Eubanks was ejected for this in the second quarter of tonight’s game:

This video does a good job of showing the play that led up to the play: Zach Edey leaves out an elbow on Eubanks as the pair fight for a rebound. Edey was probably trying to send a message after Eubanks shoved Ja Morant in a scuffle a few minutes earlier.

But then Eubanks sizes him up much more obviously on the next play. Tyler Ford explains the ejection:

“Eubanks speeds up with the speed of his body for the purpose of delivering significant impact in a non-basketball manner,” Ford says. He definitely does that — the way he targets Edey, it’s clear he’s not focused on the ball but on the contact.

“But Andy, haven’t you recently argued for the NBA game to become more physical?,” I hear you asking from behind your screen. Yes, but I think the dividing line is risk of injury. If Eubanks hadn’t gone for Edey, but say, Morant, I think it’s fair to say there was significant risk of injury. If Edey hadn’t seen Eubanks coming, and hadn’t been able to stiffen up to defend himself, and hadn’t been the biggest player in the NBA, it also could have been dangerous. (Markieff Morris missed four months after this hit from Nikola Jokic, for example.)

I do wish that there were more obvious criteria for the difference between flagrant ones and twos, though. I feel it was a flagrant two due to the non-basketball nature of the play, but fans online, along with Craig Bolerjack and Thurl Bailey, disagreed with me strongly — and it’s hard to argue with them given the rules as is. A flagrant one is “unnecessary contact” while a flagrant two is “unnecessary and excessive contact,” and that’s a slippery dividing line.

I also wish the crew had gone back to the initial elbow and given Edey a tech for that as well. I know that’s a slippery dividing line, too, but clearly played a role in what happened here.

    3. A very weird Rookie of the year race

We knew this was one of the worst draft classes ever last year, certainly at the top. Some draft prognosticators felt that the 10-30 range was pretty normal, but the truth is that there haven’t been a lot of successes in that window, either.

Here are the current Rookie of the Year odds, across a variety of sportsbooks:

No rookie has over 12 points per game. Closest is Memphis’ Jaylen Wells, the 39th pick overall — he’s outshined Zach Edey in the Grizzlies’ starting lineup, unexpectedly. He doesn’t do a whole lot besides take shots the rest of the offense sets up for him… but that’s all it takes in this class.

Ware is the No. 15 overall pick who was a non-factor the first 25 games of the year, before the Heat threw him into action recently, and have found impressive success. He’s scored over 20 points in his last three games, enough for Eric Spoelstra to put him into the starting lineup. That push alone has put him at the top of the race.

You’ll also even note Collier near the bottom of that list. I don’t think I’d make that bet, but could see him make a jump into the ROY top three if he begins to score more along with the assists now that he’s in the starting lineup.

Next year’s class looks better, which is a good sign for the Jazz, given they’re putting their eggs in the draft basket. Right now, this 2024 class looks like a reasonable group of role players, but there’s really no one with future star power.

Note to readers • This story is available to Salt Lake Tribune subscribers only. Thank you for supporting local journalism.

The Utah Jazz faced off against the Memphis Grizzlies in an exciting match-up that saw two talented forwards, Napheesa Collier and Nia George, go head-to-head. The final score of the game was 110-105 in favor of the Jazz, but both Collier and George put on impressive performances.

Collier, the versatile forward for the Jazz, had a strong showing with 20 points, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. She was a dominant force on both ends of the court, using her size and athleticism to score in the paint and grab key rebounds. Collier’s ability to stretch the floor with her outside shooting also helped space the floor for her teammates.

On the other side, George, the dynamic forward for the Grizzlies, also had a standout game with 25 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists. George showcased her scoring ability with her quickness and agility, getting to the rim and finishing through contact. She also showed off her playmaking skills, finding open teammates for easy buckets.

Overall, it was a close and competitive game between two talented teams. The match-up between Collier and George was a highlight of the game, showcasing the skills and abilities of these two young stars. In the end, the Jazz came out on top, but both players left their mark on the game with their impressive performances.

The Sixers‘ minimum-salary investment in Guerschon Yabusele has paid off in a big way this season, with the big man playing a regular role in Philadelphia and submitting strong numbers, including 10.3 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.0 assists per game with a .394 3PT%. The 76ers “love” the Frenchman, Marc Stein writes at his Substack.

However, as Adam Aaronson and Yossi Gozlan of HoopsHype outline for PhillyVoice.com, retaining Yabusele beyond this season might not be easy. The Sixers will only hold his Non-Bird rights, which will prevent them from offering more than 20% above his minimum salary unless use another cap exception. Philadelphia should have the taxpayer mid-level exception available, but even if that’s enough to re-sign Yabusele, it would mean not being able to use the MLE to bring in additional help.

With that in mind, the Sixers may to make a difficult decision on Yabusele at this year’s deadline, according to Stein, who reports that multiple playoff teams have submitted trade offers for the 29-year-old. Given that Philadelphia is just 17-27, is well above the tax line, and isn’t assured of hanging onto Yabusele beyond this season, entertaining those offers might be in the team’s best interest.

Veteran swingman Eric Gordon, who has made 49.2% of his three-point attempts in his last 14 outings since returning from oral surgery, has also generated trade interest, Stein writes, adding that the 76ers want to see how the next week-plus plays out before making any final decisions about their trade deadline plans.

    Here’s more on the Sixers:

    • Joel Embiid‘s swollen left knee has responded well to treatment and he was partial participant in practice on Monday, per Kyle Neubeck of PHLY Sports (Twitter links). However, the former MVP has been ruled out for Tuesday’s game vs. the Lakers as well as Wednesday’s vs. the Kings, according to the team.
    • Paul George, who underwent an MRI on his injured finger on Sunday, didn’t practice on Monday and won’t play on Tuesday, Neubeck adds. The club is still reviewing the results of the forward’s MRI.
    • John Hollinger of The Athletic takes stock of the Sixers’ current situation, explaining why tanking this season to try to protect their top-six protected 2025 first-rounder doesn’t make much sense, given how close they are to a play-in spot and the head-start that the NBA’s other tanking teams have gotten. Hollinger could see Philadelphia either buying or selling at the deadline, given the club’s tradable draft assets still on hand and its position relative to the tax line.
    • Within the same story, Hollinger highlights Sixers two-way player Justin Edwards, writing that the rookie has shown he’s capable of being a solid NBA role player. “I feel like a broken record, but he just seems to always be in the right place on offense,” head coach Nick Nurse said of Edwards on Friday. “He’s got a few levels, he can go all the way to the rim, he’s got enough of a pull-up if there’s too much traffic there, and he’s got a decent sense (of when) to (kick) it out.”

With the NBA trade deadline rapidly approaching, the Philadelphia 76ers have been at the center of numerous rumors swirling around the league. Here are the latest rumblings surrounding the Sixers:

    1. Guerschon Yabusele: The Sixers have reportedly shown interest in trading for the 6’8″ forward from the Real Madrid in the EuroLeague. Yabusele, a former first-round pick of the Boston Celtics, could provide some much-needed depth and versatility to the Sixers’ frontcourt.

    2. Aaron Gordon: There have been whispers that the Sixers are exploring a potential trade for Orlando Magic forward Aaron Gordon. The high-flying forward would give the Sixers another athletic wing player who can score and defend at a high level.

    3. Joel Embiid: Despite some speculation that the Sixers could look to trade Joel Embiid, team officials have stated that they have no intention of moving their All-Star center. Embiid remains a focal point of the team’s future plans.

    4. Paul George: There have been murmurs that the Sixers could make a play for Los Angeles Clippers star Paul George. Adding George to a lineup that already features Embiid and Ben Simmons could make the Sixers legitimate title contenders.

    5. Carsen Edwards: The Sixers have been linked to Boston Celtics guard Carsen Edwards in trade talks. The sharpshooting guard could provide a scoring punch off the bench for Philadelphia.

As the trade deadline approaches, it will be interesting to see how these rumors play out and if the Sixers make any significant moves to bolster their roster for a playoff push. Stay tuned for updates on these and other Sixers rumors.
