My Georgetown vs Villanova College Basketball Betting Preview

I’ve been very adamant all season about Georgetown still being a step down from the top tier in the Big East, despite the improvements in year two of the Ed Cooley era.

However, the Hoyas’ past four games aren’t an indication of a lost season. Georgetown lost to the three top teams in the Big East — Marquette, UConn and St. John’s, with two being on the road — and its defeat at home against DePaul was without two of its best players in Thomas Sorber and Jayden Epps.

If Sorber and Epps are in the lineup, this spread is a bargain — down to five. Even if one of the two are in the lineup, this spread still holds some value, even on the road.

But we’ll have to wait for the injury report to truly make this handicap.

Sorber is Georgetown’s leading scorer and is averaging nearly a double-double (8.6 rebounds) per game. Meanwhile, Epps has improved greatly as a defender and can create offense as the team’s fourth-leading scorer.

Villanova has played much better since its ugly start to the season thanks to its top four of Eric Dixon, Wooga Poplar, Jhamir Brickus and Jordan Longino. The Wildcats earned quality wins over Cincinnati (when it was ranked) and UConn, and need all the wins they can get if they want any shot at an NCAA Tournament berth.

But Cooley has a significant coaching edge over Kyle Neptune. If Cooley has his players (or one of the two), I expect Georgetown to keep this game close (I’d take the Hoyas down to 5).

If Georgetown doesn’t have both players, I’d probably pass on this game — or sprinkle a bit on the Hoyas just for the coaching edge.

Georgetown vs Villanova Predictions, Odds, Time: 2025 College Basketball Picks

The highly anticipated matchup between Georgetown and Villanova is set to take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Both teams have had impressive seasons so far, and this game is sure to be a thrilling showdown between two powerhouse programs.

Georgetown, led by head coach Patrick Ewing, has been playing stellar basketball this season. With a strong roster of talented players, including top recruits and experienced veterans, the Hoyas have shown that they can compete with the best teams in the country. Their defense has been particularly impressive, shutting down opponents and forcing turnovers.

On the other hand, Villanova, coached by Jay Wright, is a perennial powerhouse in college basketball. The Wildcats have consistently been one of the top teams in the nation, and this season is no different. With a potent offense and a stifling defense, Villanova has proven to be a force to be reckoned with.

As for the odds, Villanova is currently favored to win the game. However, Georgetown has shown that they are more than capable of pulling off an upset. This game could go either way, and it’s sure to be a close and exciting matchup.

In terms of predictions, it’s hard to say who will come out on top. Both teams have the talent and the coaching to secure a victory. It will likely come down to which team can execute their game plan better on the day of the game.

Make sure to tune in to this highly anticipated matchup between Georgetown and Villanova. It’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss!

Eric Dixon’s high usage rate and ability to exploit this Georgetown defense makes his points prop Over tough to pass up, even at an elevated line. He should help Villanova coast to a home victory tonight.

Two 12-win teams meet in a Big East conference affair, with Villanova welcoming Georgetown to Pennsylvania.

The Wildcats have dominated this series with the Hoyas recently with nine wins in the last 10 meetings, and I don’t see that changing today thanks to Eric Dixon.

Read on for my Georgetown vs. Villanova predictions and college basketball picks for Monday, January 20.

    Georgetown vs Villanova prediction

    My best bet
Eric Dixon Over 23.5 points (+100 at bet365)

    My analysis

This is a rough matchup for the Georgetown Hoyas. The Villanova Wildcats team total, the spread and a few player props are all in play. However, Eric Dixon’s points prop Over stands out most.

The Hoyas’ individual defense has struggled this season. This unit may come into this game with a Top 25 defensive efficiency rating via Bart Torvik, but some of its issues are masked because it’s been solid at the rim, along with a few other spots.

Georgetown has allowed 1.01 points per possession on plays defended as “dribble jumpers” or isolation plays. That’s in the Bottom 7% of college basketball. Dixon is the perfect player to take advantage of that.

There are not many players getting isolation clear-outs called for them on such a regular basis as Dixon. He’s getting an average volume of nearly eight 3-point attempts per game, a usage rate near the top of college basketball, and a ranking of 15th nationally in percentage of team shots taken.

The volume that Dixon is getting on a nightly basis makes this attractive. It’s sometimes difficult for books to accurately price because it’s not a typical load for a college basketball player to carry. This matchup, and what he’s done in similar ones, adds to the appeal.

Dixon has three 30-point games this season, and they’ve all come against teams that fit a similar profile defensively with Georgetown. His last came against Cincinnati, which ranks in the Bottom 19% defensively against the dribble jumper. Before that, it was Maryland, which is nearly the same. Lastly, before that, it came in the season’s opening game against Columbia, which ranks in the Bottom 13% of such sets.

In other words, there’s a direct correlation to Dixon scoring against teams that struggle defensively here, and his opponent tonight may be the worst he’s played this season at defending such spots on the floor.

Georgetown vs Villanova same-game parlay (SGP)

    Eric Dixon Over 23.5 points

    Villanova -8.5

It’s primarily a projections play as I pair Villanova -8.5 with my best bet. I made this -10.5 with home-court advantage accounted for.

I don’t see how the Hoyas get any regular stops to stay in contact with Villanova, and I think it could snowball in a hostile environment. It’s also hard not to factor in the mental hurdle for Georgetown, as they’ve lost their last two visits to Finneran Pavilion by an average of over 30+ points.

Tonight, two powerhouse teams in the Big East conference will face off as the Georgetown Hoyas take on the Villanova Wildcats. Both teams are coming off impressive wins and are looking to continue their momentum in this highly anticipated matchup.

The odds for this game are currently in favor of Villanova, who are the higher ranked team and have a more consistent track record this season. However, Georgetown has shown they are not to be underestimated, with key wins over top teams in the conference.

In terms of predictions, this game is expected to be a close and competitive battle. Georgetown will need to rely on their strong defense and efficient scoring to keep up with Villanova’s high-powered offense. On the other hand, Villanova will look to control the pace of the game and capitalize on their superior shooting and rebounding.

As for picks, Villanova may have the edge in this matchup, but Georgetown has the potential to pull off an upset. It will likely come down to which team can execute their game plan better and make key plays down the stretch.

Your Georgetown Hoyas will return to the court tonight, Friday, January 17th, when they host the DePaul Blue Demons at Capital One Arena. Tip-off is set for 8:00 PM, and the game will be televised on CBS Sports Network. The Hoyas enter Friday’s matchup with a 12-5 overall record and a 3-3 mark in conference play, following a 63-58 overtime loss to St. John’s on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden. DePaul (9-9, 0-7 BE) suffered an 85-83 overtime loss to Marquette in their most recent game on Tuesday night in Chicago. They are playing much better basketball than prior years and might be due for a win.

Five Blue Demons scored in double figures, led by C.J. Gunn with 21 points. Isaiah Rivera contributed 20 points off the bench, while Jacob Meyer, Conor Enright, and N.J. Benson added 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively. Troy D’Amico grabbed 10 rebounds for DePaul, and Enright dished out 11 assists, achieving his first career double-double. DePaul shot a decent 51.6% (33-64) from the field, including 12 three-pointers.

Leading the Blue Demons in scoring is Jacob Meyer with an average of 13.9 points per game. C.J. Gunn follows closely with 11.2 points per game, and Isaiah Rivera rounds out the double-digit scorers with 10.6 points per game.

On Tuesday, the Hoyas fell short against the St. John’s Red Storm 63-58 at Madison Square Garden. Micah Peavy led a trio of Hoyas in double figures with 21 points. Malik Mack and Curtis Williams Jr. rounded out those in double figures with 13 and 11, respectively. Drew Fielder led the team on the glass with 12 rebounds followed by Thomas Sorber with 10 boards.

Sorber leads a quartet of Hoyas averaging double figures posting 14.2 ppg, a mark that ranks 15th in the BIG EAST. Peavy chips in 13.8 ppg, followed by Mack (13.6 ppg) and Jayden Epps (13.2 ppg). Georgetown and Marquette are the only two institutions with four players ranking among the top 30 in scoring in conference play.

Sorber leads the squad on the glass grabbing 8.6 rpg, which leads the league, followed by Fielder (5.9 rpg) and Peavy (5.1 rpg).

Mack paces the offense dishing out 4.7 apg with Peavy behind him at 3.7 apg.

Peavy is tied for 20th in the country and ranks second in the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.35 pockets per game.

Ed Cooley is in his second season leading the program, already surpassing last year’s win total. As a team, the Hoyas rely on their defense. The team leads the BIG EAST and ranks 24th nationally, holding opponents to 63.9 points per game and 38.2 percent shooting.

DePaul and Georgetown are an even 5-5 against one another since March of 2019, but not for long. Both will face off in a Big East battle at 8:00 p.m. ET on Friday at Capital One Arena. The Blue Demons are no doubt hoping to put an end to a 16-game streak of away losses dating back to last season…

Even though they lost, DePaul was working as a unit and finished the game with 22 assists. The team’s really been improving in that area: they’ve now improved their assist total in three consecutive matches…

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: DePaul has crashing the boards this season, having averaged 37.2 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Georgetown struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 37.9. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

The Hoyas have gone 10-2 at home. Georgetown averages 73.1 points and has outscored opponents by 9.2 points per game.

The Blue Demons are 0-7 in Big East play. DePaul is fourth in the Big East with 24.8 defensive rebounds per game led by David Skogman averaging 4.1.

Georgetown is shooting 46.6% from the field this season, 1.6 percentage points higher than the 45.0% DePaul allows to opponents. DePaul has shot at a 45.0% clip from the field this season, 6.8 percentage points above the 38.2% shooting opponents of Georgetown have averaged.

Micah Peavy (21 points) and Malik Mack (13) picked up the slack for Epps offensively but also combined for nine of the Hoyas’ 19 turnovers. Georgetown leads the conference with 13.8 turnovers per game.

“Our Achilles’ heel has been turning the ball over in critical situations,” Georgetown coach Ed Cooley said on Wednesday. “The turnover conundrum is something we have to address.”

DePaul (9-9, 0-7) dropped its fifth straight game on Tuesday, losing 85-83 in overtime to Marquette.

Conor Enright, who leads the conference with 6.9 assists per game, recorded his first career double-double with 11 points and 11 assists in the loss. On the receiving end of many of those assists was CJ Gunn (11.2 ppg), who scored 21 for the second time in three games.

The Hoyas knock down 6.6 three-pointers per game (296th in college basketball), while their opponents have made 7.4 on average.

Georgetown averages 93.6 points per 100 possessions on offense (233rd in college basketball), and gives up 81.9 points per 100 possessions (16th in college basketball).

In home games, the Hoyas are posting 12.9 more points per game (76.9) than they are in away games (64.0).

Georgetown finds themselves in the middle of the conference standings this year after a miserable first season under head coach Ed Cooley, with the Hoyas finishing just 2-18 in league play in 2024-25–with the kicker, of course, both wins coming against DePaul.

Despite the woes of last season, Georgetown is playing drastically better basketball and has hopes for postseason play. With a KenPom ranking of 62, they are on the precipice of that tournament bubble.

As with any Cooley-lead team, the Hoyas get it done with defense.

The Hoyas lead the conference in scoring defense, allowing only 63.9 points a game. On the flip side, DePaul comes in last, allowing 74.1 points per game.

DePaul Drops Overtime Heartbreaker to #7 Marquette | DePaul University Athletics

Despite DePaul (9-9, 0-7 BIG EAST) opening the game with stellar 4-of-6 shooting, Marquette (15-2, 6-0 BIG EAST) worked out to an 11-point, 21-10, advantage. The Blue Demons came right back with an 8-0 run that included five points from Gunn. Marquette knocked down a three-pointer, however, DePaul’s scoring effort didn’t waiver with the run stretching to 13-3 and cutting it to a one-point, 24-23, game. After lots of back-and-forth action, Gunn tied the game for the first time on a three-pointer which was followed up by a pair of free throws from Layden Blocker, giving DePaul a 30-29 lead. That lead grew to six following a Jacob Meyer three-pointer and floater by Gunn. Marquette cut the deficit to just one entering halftime.

The second period opened with the team’s immediately trading baskets, before a block and dunk by NJ Benson followed by a three-minute scoreless stretch from Marquette gave DePaul a 44-41 advantage. The game was quickly tied once again, before both teams had periods of scoreless droughts. DePaul put together seven unanswered points for a 53-48 lead, before the Golden Eagles would respond, this time on a three-pointer by David Joplin. The final three minutes of the half featured four lead changes with Conor Enright eventually sending the game to overtime on a layup with three seconds remaining.

#7 Marquette Men’s Basketball Big East Preview Primer: at DePaul | Anonymous Eagle

For example, while on that seven game winning streak to start the season, DePaul was playing like the #48 team in the country according to BartTorvik.com’s data filtering. They did this largely because of a top 50 offense, and that was largely because the Blue Demons were shooting over 41% from behind the three-point line and limiting their overmatched-on-paper opponents to just 27.6% three-point shooting.

Since then, DePaul has played like the #207 team in the country, ranking somewhere below #180 in both offensive and defensive efficiency. Part of the reason why is — you guessed it — the three-point shooting thing has completely flipped over on the Blue Demons. They’re connecting on just 34.3% of their own long range tries over the past 10 games, and their opponents are hitting — get this — over 43% of their attempts.

In only their six Big East games, DePaul is shooting 31.6% from distance, and opponents are connecting 45.5% of the time.

As the Georgetown Hoyas gear up to face off against the DePaul Blue Demons tonight, it’s crucial for them to handle business and come out with a win.

The Hoyas are currently in the middle of a tough stretch in their schedule, and every game is vital as they look to position themselves well for postseason play. A win against DePaul would not only boost their record but also give them much-needed momentum heading into the final stretch of the season.

To achieve success tonight, the Hoyas must focus on their defense and shut down DePaul’s high-scoring offense. They also need to execute on offense, making smart decisions and capitalizing on opportunities to score.

As fans, it’s important to show our support and cheer on the Hoyas as they take on DePaul. Let’s rally behind our team and help them secure a crucial victory tonight.

Xavier v. Georgetown: preview, matchups, keys to the game

    So.

Beating Seton Hall was like stealing candy from a baby, both in that it was easy to the point of being apparently slightly mean-spirited and that it didn’t really do anything that will impress the selection committee. That win in and of itself wasn’t exactly a landmark for the program, but it was enough that a certain segment of the fan base was able to still see the regular season as something other than tune up for a last ditch run at the auto bid.

Despite being 11-2 and having established a modest amount of momentum, Georgetown isn’t really in much better a place than X right now. If the tournament started today, they’d be maybe a coin toss to be included thanks to their -.1 WAB. Their home loss to Notre Dame is solidly in Q3 and any good will built up by rolling Creighton was blunted by just sneaking by Seton Hall despite giving up a 10-0 run to end the game.

Both of these teams come into this game nursing unimpressive resumes and seasons on the brink of evaporation. Someone can keep things ticking over with a win, but the loser is going to face a long and arduous road ahead if they want to be part of the conversation.

    Team fingerprint

It all starts on the defensive end for the Hoyas. They were good in the non-conference and have been excellent in the admittedly small sample of Big East play. Their defense inside the arc is incredibly stingy, ranking fifth in the nation in two-point percentage against and blocking a ton of shots. They manage to do both that and force a lot of turnovers (21.2%, 47th) without sending their opponents to the line very much at all. They’re only an average defensive rebounding team and they’ve been fairly permissive around the arc. It all adds up to a top-50 defense that has been top-1 in conference games.

The offense is a bit more hit and miss. They turn the ball over a lot and don’t get to the line very well at all. Their 50% success rate from deep in conference games is propped up by an eye-watering 10-16 performance against Creighton; this is not a good three-point team on the year. They score really well from inside, especially at the rim, where they shoot 65.6%, and are strong on the offensive glass. They’re not a top-100 offense overall, but they aren’t far off.

For a team that gets to the offensive glass so we’ll, they also do a really good job of getting back and keeping opponents out of transition. Just something to keep in mind.

    Players

    Starters

    Starting matchups
Malik Mack Point Guard Dayvion McKnight
    Sophomore Class Senior
    “6’2″”, 175″ Measurements “6’0″”, 188″
    12.5/4.4/4.9 Game line 10.8/2.6/4.8
    40.5/40.4/70.8 Shooting line 46.7/40/83.7
Mack has followed a strong freshman campaign at Harvard with an impressive first season at Georgetown. He’s an excellent shooter from deep and has paired strong assist numbers with excellent ball security. His shooting numbers fall off precipitously against KenPom A/B competition and he can be a bit foul prone in those games. Having missed Georgetown’s first two conference games, he’ll be making his Big East debut tonight.
Jayden Epps Shooting Guard Ryan Conwell
    Junior Class Junior
    “6’2″”, 190″ Measurements “6’4″”, 215″
    15.9/2.2/2.7 Game line 16.9/7.7/2.5
    45.9/39/75 Shooting line 54.4/26.7/76.4
Epps is listed as day-to-day with a lower body injury, but we’re presuming he’ll play. His shooting from all three levels has massively improved this season and his defense has taken a big step forward. He lit up Xavier twice last year, albeit in two losing efforts. If and how well he plays tonight will be a huge factor in the outcome of this game.
Micah Peavy Small Forward Marcus Foster
    Senior Class Senior
    “6’8″”, 220″ Measurements “6’5″”, 215″
    13.2/4.5/4.2 Game line 9.2/4.3/2.4
    45.3/33.3/73.1 Shooting line 45/46.8/73.9
Peavy has bounced around a bit and is enjoying his super senior year at Georgetown. He shoots about 4 threes per game and connects on a third of them. He’s much more effective inside the arc, has some solid ball skills, and is an excellent defender in terms of both block rate and steal rate. He is having a very good season so far for the Hoyas.
Thomas Sorber Power Forward Dailyn Swain
    Freshman Class Sophomore
    “6’10″”, 255″ Measurements “6’8″”, 220″
    15.7/8.3/2.5 Game line 9/4.9/2.1
    56.2/18.2/74.2 Shooting line 53.8/25/83.3
Speaking of guys who are having good seasons, Sorber is the difference between Georgetown being a punch line and being an interesting bubble team. He struggled against Creighton for obvious reasons, but he has otherwise been borderline dominant, scoring well in the post and effectively enough in the mid-range, eating the glass at both ends, and protecting the rim without fouling. We might not see a sophomore year out of him.
    Drew Fielder Center Jerome Hunter
    Sophomore Class Senior
    “6’11″”, 235″ Measurements “6’8″”, 225″
    8/5.8/1.1 Game line 7/3.7/0.9
    55.1/18.2/76.2 Shooting line 50.7/55.6/75
Fielder is being overshadowed by Sorber, but he’s quietly having an excellent season in his own right. He’s actually been more efficient than his frontcourt mate, owing to a better OReb%, lower turnover rate, and better shooting percentage from inside the arc. His usage rate is lower and he doesn’t get as many minutes, but he consistently kicks in his averages and doesn’t really have many glaring weaknesses.

    Reserves

Georgetown doesn’t have an especially deep bench. They get just over a quarter of their minutes from reserves, hanging right around 300th in the nation. This number obviously shrinks significantly if Epps can’t go.

What depth they do have is in the form of backup big men Caleb Williams and Jordan Burks. Burks is a 6’9″, 205-pound sophomore who puts up 5.1/3.2/0.5 per game as a more traditional big. He’s a solid offensive rebounder and a good defender, and he shoots nearly 75% from inside the arc. Williams is 6’7″, 230 and only a freshman. He averages 3.8/3.4/1.0 per game on 47.5/38.5/85.7 shooting. He can step out and hit a little bit, but he’s also a strong defensive rebounder.

Deeper still you find Curtis Williams and his 2.7/1.4/0.3. He’s probably more of a wing, but Georgetown’s lack of guard depth sees him playing more as a hybrid 2/3. If we’re lucky, we’ll get a glimpse of freshman guard Kayvaun Mulready as deep guard support. He has played in a statistically meaningless portion of Georgetown’s close games.

    Three questions

-Who will be suiting up? Probably not Zach Freemantle or Trey Green, as nothing coming out of Xavier indicates that either of them is close to a return. More pertinently, Jayden Epps is listed as day-to-day for Georgetown. That’s ambiguous, probably purposely so, but his actual status will make a big difference here. If he’s able to go, Georgetown looks a lot like the team that destroyed Creighton. If not, they more closely reset the personnel groupings that needed a game-winning stop to sneak by Seton Hall. That’s a pretty big difference.

-How does Xavier defend Georgetown’s front court? The Hoyas suit up and run with two titanic bigs in Sorber and Fielder from the start, and Peavy has 4 size at the 3. They sit at 14th overall in average height; Xavier is 118th. The Muskies already have problems enough scoring inside and avoiding getting the shots blocked, and they have some meaningful limitations in terms of the size of the bodies they can put in the frontcourt right now. Sean Miller is going to need a good defensive scheme to keep Georgetown’s big men from eating.

-Does Xavier fully lean in to the three? X is a top-10 team from deep in terms of percentage, but they don’t just chuck it from the cheap seats like the #LetItFly era Creighton squads. They have some interesting personnel in the paint, but nobody that you’d stake your season on throwing the ball to asking them to get you a bucket. Maybe it’s time to huck 45 threes and hope for the best.

    Three keys

-Collapse the paint. Twice this year, Georgetown has taken more than 45% of their shots from behind the arc; they lost both those games. In the 11 games they’ve gone under that number, they’re undefeated. This team is riding interior scoring, specifically starting with Thomas Sorber. If Xavier forces them out of the paint and they shoot 62.5% from behind the arc as a team like they did against Creighton, you tip your hat and move on. If they win by bullying the ball to the rim, you could be forgiven for being frustrated that X didn’t force a second option.

-Let Dailyn Swain create. I can understand the argument for not living with the ball in the hands of a guy who is shooting 5-18 from inside the arc with three total assists in conference play, but…

Georgetown schemes really well on lead guards, Swain has size and playmaking skills, and he lives at the free throw line. He’s in the top 100 in the nation in free throw rate and the top 2 in the Big East since conference play began. Against a team hurting for bodies and heavily dependent on the starting five, Swain downhill early and often might help Xavier establish control of the game.

-Sprint through the tape. You don’t need me to recount for you Xavier’s disappointing inability to finish close games so far this year. Despite the assertion of another author on this site, I do think Xavier still has a chance to revive their bubble hopes. This game is worth almost half a WAB, as is next time out against St. John’s. Get them both – which I understand is a tall order – and suddenly Xavier has resurfaced and has the chance to regroup for some sort of push through the last seven or so weeks of the season. Maybe a veteran squad coming together and Zach Freemantle getting his Willis Reed on combine to remedy the errors of early in the season and get some big wins across the line. It’s far from a sure thing, but it’s better than nothing. It’s all immaterial if it doesn’t start soon, and there’s no time like the present to set a new course for the campaign.

The highly anticipated matchup between Xavier and Georgetown is just around the corner, and both teams are gearing up for what is sure to be an intense battle on the court. Let’s take a closer look at this exciting game, including key matchups and factors that could determine the outcome.

    Matchups:
One of the key matchups to watch in this game will be in the backcourt, as Xavier’s talented guards will go head-to-head with Georgetown’s strong perimeter defenders. Xavier’s Paul Scruggs and Colby Jones will need to navigate the defensive pressure of Georgetown’s Dante Harris and Donald Carey to create scoring opportunities for their team. In the paint, Xavier’s Zach Freemantle will be a force to be reckoned with as he battles against Georgetown’s frontcourt players such as Qudus Wahab and Timothy Ighoefe.

    Keys to the game:
    – Three-point shooting: Both teams have shown proficiency from beyond the arc this season, so it will be crucial for Xavier and Georgetown to knock down their three-point shots to stretch the defense and open up driving lanes for their guards.
    – Rebounding battle: With both teams boasting strong frontcourt players, controlling the boards will be key in this matchup. Whichever team can dominate the glass and secure second-chance opportunities will have a significant advantage.
    – Defensive intensity: Both Xavier and Georgetown are known for their defensive prowess, so it will be important for each team to lock in on that end of the floor and make life difficult for their opponents. Communication and rotations will be crucial in limiting easy baskets and forcing turnovers.

Overall, this game has all the makings of a high-octane, competitive showdown between two talented teams. Xavier and Georgetown will look to make a statement and secure a crucial victory in conference play. Be sure to tune in to see which team comes out on top in this exciting matchup.

LINKS: 2-0 Georgetown Hoyas Host Hungry Xavier Musketeers on Friday Night

Your Georgetown Hoyas will host the Xavier Musketeers (9-5, 1-2) on Friday night at Capital One Arena. Tipoff is at 8:00 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network (no Roy commentating, shame). The local radio broadcast will be Bloomberg 99.1 with Rich Chvotkin on the call in his 51st season (SiriusXM Ch. 384 or 974).

The Hoyas are 11-2 overall and 2-0 in league play following an 83-53 win over Coppin State last Saturday. Much of the Coppin State game looked like a holiday tune up after two conference games and a Christmas break. Hoyas can’t afford to have any rust on Friday night.

Xavier, coming off a 94-72 win over Seton Hall on Tuesday, is looking for a second BIG EAST win, while Georgetown is looking for their fifth-straight win, with two over conference foes. With a very tough starting schedule, XU lost at UConn in OT 94-89 and was beaten by Marquette 72-70 at home. They don’t have Zach Freemantle back from injury, but they are still more than formidable.

Earlier this week, Hoyas fans had a chance to celebrate a nice start to conference play with some Casual Awards, and then took a looked at a path to a 10-win BIG EAST season. Knock on wood.

We all promised ourselves that we wouldn’t get our hopes up, but this team certainly feels different. This humble lunch blog contributor has been excited about the tectonic shift in the Hoyas defense since the Notre Dame loss. They will need every bit to slow the 39th ranked offense in Xavier (6th best 3PT% with 40.6%).

Ed Cooley has matched up well against Sean Miller in the past and the two have been “close friends” since at least before they led the U18 American basketball team to a championship at the 2014 FIBA Americas tournament with Billy Donovan.

Xavier’s offense is OK with a quick shot in transition and the Hoyas defense has recently been pretty good at guiding that first chance into a tough one. Rebounding the miss and staying out of foul trouble will be a key for Georgetown on defense.

Keeping pace with the scoring—and having all their bucket-getters on the floor with Jayden Epps day-to-day—will also be a key. There’s no reason to expect much difference from the Hoyas feeding Thomas Sorber low and reacting to if/when the double team comes.

Overall, with two teams who love to leverage transition offense, this one might come down to the turnover battle.

“We have 17 conference games in front of us, and there’s a lot of teams that play their best basketball in the months of January and February and, look, we have to be one of them,” Miller said.

“The next task is to go on the road at Georgetown and play a good game.”

Georgetown (11-2, 2-0) has already eclipsed its win total of each of the past three seasons and is seeking a 3-0 conference start for the first time since the 2011-12 season.

“The staff has done an incredible job of bringing in talent,” coach Ed Cooley said on Dec. 28 after the Hoyas’ 83-53 win over Coppin State.

Peavy ranks ninth in the country and leads the BIG EAST in steals per game, picking 2.69 pockets per game.

Sorber has four double-doubles to his name, tied for third in the league. Against Coppin State, the freshman tallied his fourth game with 20+ points moving him into a tie for ninth for GU freshmen with multiple 20+ games since the 1972-73 season.

Defensively, the team ranks second in the league in steals per game (9.2). The Hoyas are forcing opponents to commit 14.69 turnovers per game, which ranks fourth in the conference.

Xavier v. Georgetown: preview, matchups, keys to the game | Banners on the Parkway (SB Nation)

Someone can keep things ticking over with a win, but the loser is going to face a long and arduous road ahead if they want to be part of the conversation…

Jayden Epps didn’t practice as he works to get healthy enough to play against the Musketeers…

Georgetown’s transition defense starts with their shot selection. Yes, you read that correctly.

It’s all about taking the “right” perimeter shot, especially during transition and early in the shot clock. In today’s game, there will be times when that will be the best shot in the possession. It’s knowing when those situations are present and when they aren’t.

The Hoyas used various drills to practice getting back on defense, hoping it will choke off threes, especially the ones via transition ball reversal.

Georgetown vs. Xavier | House Enterprise

Friday night, Georgetown welcomes in yet another formidable opponent, Xavier.

The Musketeers just beat Seton Hall by 22 on New Year’s Eve, a team Georgetown beat by one on December 22. It’ll take another tremendous effort from the Hoyas to move to 3-0 in conference play.

The player to watch on Friday night in D.C. is once again Thomas Sorber. The 6’10” freshman is the team’s second-leading scorer at 15.7 PPG, has recorded four double-doubles this year, and has scored in double figures in all but two games this season.

In his last two games, he’s averaging over 20 PPG along with 10 RPG and has blocked 4 shots in both contests.

Scouting report: Can Xavier Musketeers get Big East road win over Georgetown Hoyas? | The Enquirer

Epps was a thorn in Xavier’s side last season, pouring in 32 points with 11 assists at Cintas Center. He had 20 points and 7 assists in Xavier’s road win over the Hoyas.

With Epps sidelined, Georgetown had little trouble cruising past a 1-win Coppin State club as Thomas Sorber and Drew Fielder combined for 42 points.

Guard Malik Mack, one of Georgetown’s top transfer portal pickups from Harvard, is averaging 12.5 points per game and shooting over 40% from 3-point range. Mack missed the first two games of Big East play before returning against Coppin State and recording a 15-point, 11-assist double-double.

2026 5-star SG Jordan Smith Jr. hearing from 5 schools the most | On3

Jordan Smith Jr., a five-star shooting guard in the 2026 class, says he is hearing from five schools the most frequently (in no particular order): Georgetown, Duke, Arkansas, Louisville, and Kansas. Each program has offered him a scholarship.

The 6-foot-3 junior out of Paul VI Catholic (VA) took an official visit to Duke in November. Louisville, Syracuse, and Georgetown have hosted him on unofficial visits…

“They’re trying to bring Georgetown back, and I really like that. They’re playing fast and my relationship with Coach (Ed) Cooley is really, really good.

“I’m seeing a big leap with them. In Coach’s first year, it wasn’t that good. But this year, I’m enjoying watching them play, they’re really opening my eyes.

The Georgetown Hoyas are coming off a thrilling 2-0 start to their season and are looking to continue their success as they host the Xavier Musketeers on Friday night. The Hoyas have shown strong offensive and defensive capabilities in their first two games and will be looking to maintain their momentum against a hungry Xavier team.

Xavier, on the other hand, is coming off a tough loss in their season opener and will be looking to bounce back with a strong performance against Georgetown. The Musketeers have a talented roster and will be looking to prove themselves against a tough opponent in the Hoyas.

This Friday night matchup promises to be an exciting and competitive game, so make sure to tune in and watch as these two teams battle it out on the court. Don’t miss out on this showdown between the Hoyas and the Musketeers – it’s sure to be a game you won’t want to miss!
