Is Georgia QB playing today vs. Notre Dame?

Georgia Bulldogs quarterback back Carson Beck missed the second half of the SEC championship game against the Texas Longhorns due to an elbow injury. Beck is Georgia’s leading passer with 3,485 passing yards, 28 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He has started 27 consecutive games and the Bulldogs have gone 24-3 in those contests.

Beck is not expected to play in the Sugar Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Back up quarterback Gunner Stockton will replace Carson Beck.

    Carson Beck injury update

Carson Beck is also out for the remainder of the College Football Playoff. He underwent a significant surgery on his elbow.

“Georgia quarterback Carson Beck underwent successful surgery Monday (Dec. 23) on his right elbow to repair his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL), performed by renowned orthopedic surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles, Ca,” said Georgia football in a recent statement. “A full recovery is expected with throwing to begin spring of 2025.”

    1. Gunner Stockton

    2. Ryan Puglisi

    3. Jaden Rashada

Gunner Stockton is more of a dual threat quarterback than Carson Beck, so Georgia fans should expect to see more designed quarterback runs. Stockton put up monster numbers in high school, but has very limited experience in college. He has no career starts and just 51 career passing attempts.

Behind Stockton is expected to be true freshman Ryan Puglisi, who has impressed in practice. Arizona State transfer Jaden Rashada has limited starting experience and is also competing for the No. 2 quarterback role.

The Georgia Bulldogs will be without several key contributors in the Sugar Bowl against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A combination of transfers, suspensions and injuries means that over 10 Georgia Bulldogs will miss the Sugar Bowl.

Georgia is most notably without starting quarterback Carson Beck against Notre Dame. In Beck’s place, the Bulldogs will start back up quarterback Gunner Stockton, who started in the second half of the SEC championship game, but only has 51 career passing attempts.

  • ‘He chose to come back’: Jimmy Carter’s Georgia home town celebrates his life | Jimmy Carter

‘He chose to come back’: Jimmy Carter’s Georgia home town celebrates his life | Jimmy Carter

The signs, made by hand or machine, less than a meter squared or the size of a truck, were everywhere in this small town on Monday: “Thank you, Jimmy Carter.” “Home of Jimmy Carter.” And, left over from October: “Happy 100th birthday.”

Smiling portraits of the 39th president of the US were hanging around the town where he was born and raised – at city hall, in a restaurant.

Residents in the town of fewer than 600 going to work and running errands seemed unperturbed by the gaggle of TV news trucks gathered next to the railroad tracks that run through town, brought by news of Carter’s death on Sunday. They seemed accustomed to the attention that comes with being the home town of the longest-lived and, by many measures, most active former occupant of the White House.

All those who spoke to the Guardian had an anecdote on hand about the man they considered a neighbor, a “regular guy” who just happened to have helped eradicate guinea worm in Africa, won the Nobel peace prize and led a disastrous operation to free US hostages in Iran, among many other milestones.

Only a few minutes down US highway 280 from where Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, lived in town, Haley Beverly, 29, and her daughter, Rosemary, two, were picking up their mail shortly after noon. Beverly’s husband, Robert, has been the pastor at Plains Methodist church, next door to their house, for eight years.

Haley Beverly, next-door neighbor of Jimmy Carter, points in the direction of his home in Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

“It’s the same church where Jimmy and Rosalynn were married,” Beverly volunteered. That was on 7 July 1946, and the couple stayed married for 77 years, until Rosalynn’s death in 2023. “We used to see them walking in front of our house, holding hands – and the black Escalade [of the Secret Service] following slowly behind,” she recalled. “Just like a pair of sweethearts, so down to earth.”

The repeated scene made an impact on Beverly. “We’re a young couple – to see a family built like that, in a pressure cooker like the presidency … that was a big inspiration for us,” she said.

Mayor Joseph Recker Jr inside city hall in Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Down the road toward the center of town, the Plains mayor, Joseph “Joey” Recker, was unlocking the door to city hall, covering for the city clerk while she was on her lunch break. Recker, elected in May after the previous mayor had been in office for 40 years, said he and Carter were “backdoor neighbors”, meaning “my house butts up to his property”.

Recker, who is 60, said his children used to play on the Carters’ land, “shooting squirrels with a BB gun”, adding: “Of course, I would call the Secret Service first.” Noting the reaction the anecdote caused, he said: “That’s a normal way of living in Plains – though it might look odd to others.”

The mayor is also a musician, and remembers being hired to play piano at a birthday party for Carter when he was a young man. “He always made you feel like an equal,” Recker said. “I could talk to him like I’m talking to you.”

The mayor of Plains said that Carter “came along at a time when this nation needed honesty at the highest level. You could see he was an honest man, and that’s why he got elected. Whether as President Carter or Jimmy Carter, he lived what he believed. What you see is what you get … I don’t know if there’s a higher compliment you can pay to a man.”

As for his role following Carter’s death, Recker said, “My job, as mayor, is to wrap my arms around the locals, and make sure they get to grieve” – including fielding media requests, like a CNN interview he was scheduled for several hours later.

Across the railroad tracks from city hall, Milton Mills came out of the Plains Pharmacy, having left his bicycle unlocked in front. Now 62, Mills has lived in Plains since he was an infant. “I worked for him when I was 15 or 16,” he said, referring to the Carter family’s peanut farm, where Mills would pack peanuts into bags during summers, “to have money for school clothes”.

Milton Mills, raised in Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Mills, who is Black, said that Carter “would talk up for Black people – but it was hard to make change”. When elected Georgia’s governor in 1970 , Carter made national headlines, memorably saying in his inaugural speech that “the time for racial discrimination is over”.

Yet Plains itself bears lingering after-effects when it comes to race. Mills pointed in one direction across the railroad tracks and said: “That’s where most white folks live.” In the opposite direction: “That’s the Black side.” The population of Plains is about 56% Black.

A retired welder, Mills said now that Carter is dead, “two or three years from now, there’ll probably be no stores open here, and this whole town’s gonna be a historic site”. For decades, visitors have come to Plains, to catch a glimpse of the former presidential couple, or to see Carter teach Sunday school at Maranatha Baptist church.

Over at Bonita’s restaurant, the only Black-owned business in the center of town, Bonita Hightower was juggling TV interviews and catfish and meatloaf orders. “I’m sad/happy,” she told a CNN reporter. “He left so much; he left a happy path for anyone who wants to do anything great. He did it, and came back to rest – and that’s what you’re supposed to do.”

Bonita Hightower, the owner of Bonita’s restaurant, the only Black-owned business in the center of Plains. Photograph: Jesse Pratt López/The Guardian

Hightower repeated an anecdote she has told elsewhere, about how Carter’s family would order fried catfish, cheese grits and coleslaw for the former president. “He could’ve chosen to live anywhere,” Hightower said. “He chose to come back home.”

Just then, three elderly Black women entered the restaurant. They had driven from Lafayette, Alabama. Barbara King, 84, said she “admired” Carter, as the “first to express his views on race relationships openly like that”, referring to the former president’s opposition to segregation and discrimination.

“I just wanted to be here,” said 77-year-old Sara Calloway, sitting across the table. “I cried for President Carter yesterday,” she said. “He was just a plain old white man who wanted to do good – nothing fancy about him.”

Former President Jimmy Carter may be battling cancer, but his hometown of Plains, Georgia is celebrating his life and legacy. Despite his health struggles, Carter has chosen to come back to his small town to be surrounded by the people who have known him for decades.

The residents of Plains are honoring Carter by organizing a series of events and activities to show their appreciation for everything he has done for their community and the country. From a parade to a special dinner in his honor, the town is coming together to thank Carter for his service and commitment to making the world a better place.

Carter, now 96 years old, may be facing a tough battle, but his spirit and determination are as strong as ever. He continues to inspire those around him with his resilience and dedication to public service. The people of Plains are proud to call him one of their own and are grateful for the opportunity to celebrate his life and legacy.

As Carter’s health remains uncertain, the town of Plains is choosing to focus on the positive and celebrate all that he has accomplished. From his time as president to his work with Habitat for Humanity, Carter has left an indelible mark on the world. The people of Plains are honored to have him back in their midst and are determined to make the most of this special time with their beloved neighbor and friend.

  • For Notre Dame freshman All-American Anthonie Knapp, revenge on Georgia would be sweet as sugar

For Notre Dame freshman All-American Anthonie Knapp, revenge on Georgia would be sweet as sugar

NEW ORLEANS — Anthonie Knapp did not need the extra motivation this week, but the Notre Dame offensive tackle’s coach still tried to push the Georgia native’s buttons leading up to a Sugar Bowl showdown against Georgia in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff.

After all, it’s Marcus Freeman’s job to get the best out of his players when practices become monotonous in the lead up to big games.

“It’s kind of funny, because Coach Freeman was like, ‘It’s personal this week,’” Knapp said. “I was like, I mean, it’s always personal, coach.”

If you don’t know Knapp’s story, consider just how much history he has made in just a few short months. Forget that he grew up just up the road from Georgia’s campus dreaming of playing for the Bulldogs, or that he weighed only 265 pounds less than one year ago.

Knapp is a starting left tackle, one of the most difficult positions to master in the sport, in his first year playing college football. So rare is that accomplishment, he’s only the third true freshman offensive lineman in Notre Dame’s storied history to start a season opener.

“Anthonie’s a unicorn,” Irish offensive line coach Joe Rudolph said. “That just doesn’t happen.”

Now a freshman All-American with 13 starts under his belt, he faces the biggest challenge of his budding career: his hometown Bulldogs. Is it personal? Sure, but that’s how Knapp navigates life as a football player.

“This might sound a little cliche, but as an offensive lineman, I think if you don’t take any game personally, you’re not playing the game correctly,” Knapp said. “You’re not playing the game to your full potential.”

Knapp’s story began as a 185-pound tight end in Roswell, Georgia, where football is king and practically everyone is a Bulldog. Standing at 6-foot-2 as a freshman in high school, coaches realized his potential to hit a gigantic growth spurt.

“We didn’t have to be the most intelligent coaches in the world to look at his arms and body and project what he was going to look like moving forward,” said Chris Prewett, Knapp’s head coach at Roswell High School. “Let’s kill the tight end dream now. Let’s go ahead and understand that you’re going to be a tackle and you’re going to have a chance to do some good things.”

Knapp hesitated. He played tight end and outside linebacker his entire life, and he saw no need to make a change, even if he was “quick, but not quick enough for the positions I was playing.” His first snap at left tackle was a rude awakening.

“I hated it at first,” he said. “I don’t want to be an offensive lineman. I wanted to go make plays.”

He was also small. He bulked up to 225 pounds as a sophomore, then added more weight to blossom to 260 pounds before his junior season. It was at that time colleges started calling after a dominant sophomore campaign. UMass offered, and then came a chance to perform at a mega camp at Virginia Tech. He showed out in one-on-one drills, catching the eye of Rudolph, then the offensive line coach for the Hokies. They exchanged information, and later a scholarship offer was extended in January 2023.

Meanwhile, Knapp was still trying to fill out his body, which would soon have a 6-foot-4 frame to build the prototypical sculpture of a left tackle. He trained in the offseason with Vince Vance, a former Georgia offensive tackle, working on hand placement and pass-blocking angles, something that has allowed Knapp to excel today at Notre Dame, even if he is still undersized.

“He was strong, crazy strong,” said Vance, who played at 6-foot-7 and 330 pounds at Georgia until 2011. “I knew I could develop him and I knew he was going to grow.”

Knapp, however, gained the weight too quickly early in the process. He ballooned to nearly 290 pounds in high school. “I went into my first game and I couldn’t move,” he said.

“He complained every second of the day that his knees were hurting,” Prewett said. “That’s the bad weight, so he slimmed down to 275 again.”

Knapp committed to Virginia Tech in late January 2023. Two months later, Rudolph left for Notre Dame. Rudolph didn’t immediately offer Knapp a scholarship at Notre Dame, but Knapp visited in March and committed to the Irish after an offer was extended a few days later in late March.

Down the road in Athens, the Bulldogs were quiet, even with a direct line to potentially lure Knapp to sign with his dream team. Georgia offensive line coach Stacy Searels was also Vance’s position coach in college.

“We had many connections there, but I remember coach Searels walking in my head coach’s office as Roswell High School and we were gonna kind of talk,” Knapp said. “They never bit on me. That was always my dream school growing up. A little chip on my shoulder. I don’t know if it was a size issue or what, but I’m excited to play them now.”

The challenge is immense. He’ll face All-SEC pass rusher Mykel Williams, who has five sacks this season. Knapp phoned Vance on Sunday night to go over the tendencies Knapp noticed while studying film of Williams, a five-star recruiting prospect from Columbus, Georgia, three seasons ago.

“He didn’t call me to tell him what to do,” Vance said. “He called for confirmation. That shows maturity of the game, that shows he’s a student of the game.”

Knapp was rated a 3-star prospect, ranking as the nation’s No. 62 offensive tackle in 247Sports’ recruiting rankings for the class of 2024. Georgia coach Kirby Smart said he remembers Knapp “vividly being on our list and being a good football player.”

Knapp said Georgia extended an invitation to a camp, but an offer was not made. At that time, however, Knapp said he would not have decommitted from the Irish.

“I can’t say it surprised me,” Vance said. “I wanted them to (offer), trust me, but coming out of high school he was probably 6-foot-4, 270. Let’s be honest: at Georgia, that’s small. Hell, in college football that’s small. But I knew what Knapp was going to be capable of.”

Knapp arrived at Notre Dame at 265 pounds in January 2024. Notre Dame’s strength and nutrition staff developed a meal and workout plan for the freshman, and by August he weighed 290 pounds. He bounced back and forth between right tackle and center in the spring, then moved to left tackle in the summer. Then, on the fourth practice of preseason camp in August, projected starter Charles Jagusah tore a pectoral muscle. The competition at left tackle was wide open.

“My goal was to make the travel roster,” Knapp said with a laugh. “Start with small goals. It all just kinda happened pretty quick.”

Graduate senior Tosh Baker was expected to step in by default, but it became clear to Rudolph during preseason camp that Knapp earned the job.

“He just never makes the same mistake twice, and for someone his age to be able to do that and make that type of adjustment is pretty rare,” Rudolph said.

Knapp’s first start was on the road against nationally-ranked Texas A&M and potential first-round draft pick Nic Scourton. He allowed only one quarterback pressure, finishing with an 82.3 pass-block grade in the Irish’s 23-13 win, according to Pro Football Focus. As the season progressed, so did the growth and improvement, and Knapp picked up freshman All-American honors from multiple organizations, including 247Sports.

“I don’t think athletically he’s anywhere near Joe Alt or  Ronnie Stanley, those kind of guys that Notre Dame has had before, but he’s got that grit,” ESPN analyst and former offensive lineman Cole Cubelic said, continuing:

“He’s got the toughness that Notre Dame offensive linemen have, and I think he wins with that first. Technically, he’s fundamentally really sound. You don’t see his feet get crossed up. You don’t see missed hand placement. He understands angles, hat placement. He’s a little bit more of a technician than some of the overpowering Notre Dame offensive linemen we’ve seen in the past.”

For now, everything is working for the undersized freshman. Perhaps, too, Knapp will continue growing physically, allowing him to develop into another future first-round draft pick like Alt, who was picked fifth overall in April by the Los Angeles Chargers.

If that happens over the next few years, it’s easy for Georgia to wonder what could have been. Heck, why wait? He might deliver the Bulldogs a harsh reminder on New Year’s Day at the Caesars Superdome.

“The one thing you learn quickly being the head coach at Georgia is you can’t sign them all, and there’s a lot of them that you end up missing on,” Smart said. “For a guy to start as a freshman at tackle is really hard to do. It’s probably one of the hardest things to do in football, and he’s doing it at a high level.”

More Sugar Bowl coverage from Brandon Marcello: Gunner Stockton doesn’t have Carson Beck’s swagger, but there’s just something about him

Notre Dame freshman Anthonie Knapp has had quite the impressive season so far, earning himself the title of All-American. But there’s one game that still haunts him – the heartbreaking loss to Georgia earlier in the season.

Knapp has been itching for a chance at redemption, and with the upcoming rematch against Georgia in the playoffs, he sees it as the perfect opportunity to prove himself and lead his team to victory.

For Knapp, revenge on Georgia would be sweet as sugar. He’s been putting in the extra work in practice, studying film, and mentally preparing himself for this moment. He knows that this game will be a true test of his skills and determination.

As the countdown to the rematch begins, Knapp is laser-focused and ready to give it his all on the field. With his sights set on revenge, he’s determined to show Georgia what he’s made of and lead Notre Dame to a sweet victory. Let’s see if Knapp can make his revenge fantasy a reality on game day.

  • Despite Kirby Smart’s praise for Notre Dame, it’s difficult to pick against Georgia

Despite Kirby Smart’s praise for Notre Dame, it’s difficult to pick against Georgia

“You see how they play,” Smart said. “You see the toughness they play with. The linebackers are downhill, thumping. The backs are elite. They’re built like an SEC team.”

Whether Freeman blushed upon hearing this or his heart fluttered or he wrote “SEC + ND” inside of a heart in his diary may forever be a mystery. But it was nevertheless Smart offering his respect to an opponent that has, one notable stumble aside, bludgeoned its opposition. Only one of Notre Dame’s 12 wins has been by single digits. Smart went further at the Tuesday news conference with Freeman at the New Orleans Sheraton.

“They play football the way that we like to play football, very physical brand of football, disciplined, tough,” he said.

His Notre Dame love didn’t stop there. He spoke about growing up in an era when the Fighting Irish were the most dominant team for many years. (This was something of a generous recollection. Notre Dame has won two national championships in Smart’s lifetime, one when he was 2 years old.) He spoke about watching Notre Dame play on television during his childhood, including star Raghib Ismail. When he was a grad assistant at Florida State, he was with the Seminoles for a 2003 road game in South Bend, Indiana.

“And to see Touchdown Jesus and see all that, it was really something that marked my young career,” Smart said.

Had the news conference gone longer, Smart might have invoked the Four Horsemen, revealed that his favorite cereal is Lucky Charms and requested that he be addressed as “Coach Kirby O’Smart.”

Regardless, how close the Fighting Irish can come to approximating a mighty SEC behemoth figures to prove consequential to the outcome of the Sugar Bowl on the evening of New Year’s Day.

A number worth noting: Georgia is 39-2 against nonconference competition during the reign of Smart. That includes wins in each of the past 26 games against non-SEC opponents.

That record does include a healthy dose of Tennessee-Martin, Austin Peay and lesser versions of Georgia Tech. And the Yellow Jackets came within a few micrometers of dealing UGA a loss in November at Sanford Stadium.

But, on the whole, if you don’t belong to the SEC, you haven’t stood much of a chance against Smart, in no small part because you probably lack the size, depth and talent that it has taken to unseat the Bulldogs.

That 26-game run includes wins over heavyweights Ohio State, Oregon, Clemson and Michigan. The Bulldogs are 6-0 in bowl games or College Football Playoff games against non-SEC opponents since falling to Texas (then in the Big 12) on Jan. 1, 2019, in the same Superdome where UGA and Notre Dame will play Wednesday night.

It’s not only that Georgia nonconference opponents have lacked that intrinsic SEC-ness. It’s also that they’re not used to playing teams that do.

The Fighting Irish have mauled opponents with a run game that has averaged 193 yards per game, including 215 against Indiana in their first-round CFP win and 269 in their final regular-season win game against USC.

As a matter of comparison, Indiana and USC played a total of two defensive linemen that weighed 300 pounds or more, neither a starter. Georgia will start two defensive linemen that clear 300 — Nazir Stackhouse and either Christen Miller or Warren Brinson — and rotate in more.

The Bulldogs will be a different animal than were the Hoosiers.

Certainly, this Georgia team is not the same as the one that has furnished the bulk of those 26 consecutive nonconference wins. Tech made that much clear in both teams’ regular-season finale, following unimpressive wins over the likes of Mississippi State and Auburn.

But it’s still difficult to pick against Georgia in this setting, in which the Bulldogs have had a month to rest, recover and prepare for a playoff game. That could in itself be a factor, given that Georgia hasn’t played for a month since the SEC title game and Notre Dame played less than two weeks ago.

Asked about a possible advantage one way or the other, Smart answered with logic.

“Depends on who wins,” he said.

The other obvious unknown is the play of sophomore quarterback Gunner Stockton, making his first career start. Given Georgia’s long layoff and Stockton’s lack of experience, the game could go sideways in a hurry. But Smart sang his praises in a meaningful way Monday, noting his decision-making ability, accuracy and athletic ability. He added in intangibles like toughness and character.

“He’s been raised around football,” Smart said. “He’s a coach’s son. All the players play harder for him. Do you make the players around you better is what you look for in a quarterback. I think he raises the skill level of everybody around him because of who he is.”

Stockton doesn’t have much experience, but it’s the guess here that Stockton won’t be overwhelmed by the CFP stage.

Being from the SEC doesn’t ensure that Georgia will win. This has been a down year for the league, and the Sugar Bowl will be another litmus test for it. But being the best from that conference should go a long way.

Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart recently praised the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, calling them a “really good football team” ahead of their upcoming matchup. Despite Smart’s kind words, it’s difficult to pick against Georgia in this highly anticipated game.

The Bulldogs are coming off a dominant win against Vanderbilt and are currently ranked as one of the top teams in the country. Led by quarterback JT Daniels and a strong defense, Georgia has all the tools to come out on top in this crucial matchup.

While Notre Dame has shown flashes of brilliance this season, they have struggled against top-ranked opponents in recent years. The Fighting Irish will have their work cut out for them against a formidable Georgia team that is firing on all cylinders.

Ultimately, Kirby Smart’s praise for Notre Dame may be a sign of respect, but it’s hard to ignore the talent and momentum that the Bulldogs bring to the table. In what is sure to be a thrilling game, Georgia is the team to watch and the one to bet on.

Georgia Tech already has five blowout wins this season, but why stop there? Barring a freak comeback, they will be celebrating another huge victory in the locker room very soon.

    What to Know

Notre Dame has enjoyed a three-game homestand but will soon have to dust off their road jerseys. They and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets will face off in an ACC battle at 2:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday at McCamish Pavilion. Both are sauntering into the matchup backed by comfortable wins in their prior games.

Notre Dame is headed in fresh off scoring the most points they have all season. They simply couldn’t be stopped last Sunday as they easily beat Le Moyne 91-62. With that win, the Fighting Irish brought their scoring average up to 75.8 points per game.

Among those leading the charge was Tae Davis, who went 6 for 10 en route to 24 points plus six rebounds. What’s more, he also racked up four offensive rebounds, the most he’s had since back in December of 2023. Another player making a difference was Logan Imes, who scored 11 points along with two steals.

Notre Dame smashed the offensive glass and finished the game with 14 offensive rebounds. They easily outclassed their opponents in that department as Le Moyne only pulled down six.

Meanwhile, after a disappointing 56 points in their last game, Georgia Tech made sure to put some points up on the board against Alabama A&M on Saturday. Georgia Tech steamrolled past Alabama A&M 92-49. The Yellow Jackets have made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won five matches by 19 points or more this season.

Georgia Tech relied on the efforts of Jaeden Mustaf, who posted 13 points along with seven rebounds and six assists, and Lance Terry, who went 8 for 14 en route to 22 points. Mustaf had some trouble finding his footing against Duke last Saturday, so this was a step in the right direction. The team also got some help courtesy of Javian McCollum, who scored 18 points.

Notre Dame pushed their record up to 7-5 with the victory, which was their third straight at home. As for Georgia Tech, their win bumped their record up to 6-7.

Rebounding is likely to be a big factor in this contest: Notre Dame has been smashing the glass this season, having averaged 37.2 rebounds per game. However, it’s not like Georgia Tech struggles in that department as they’ve been averaging 39.1. With both teams battling to corral missed shots, we’ll see if one team can grab an edge.

Notre Dame is hoping to beat the odds on Tuesday, as the experts think they’re headed for a loss. For those looking to play the spread, watch out: Notre Dame is playing as the underdogs on the road, but their 0-1 record against the spread as such isn’t exactly encouraging.

    Odds

Georgia Tech is a slight 1.5-point favorite against Notre Dame, according to the latest college basketball odds.

The line on this game has moved quite a bit since it opened, as it started out with the Fighting Irish as a 1.5-point favorite.

    The over/under is 144.5 points.

    13. Tipping Off Before The Ball Drops – Georgia Tech – Notre Dame Fighting Irish – Official Athletics Website

ATLANTA – The extended breaks between games is no more. It’s ACC season for Notre Dame men’s basketball as they tip off league play on the final day of the year. The Fighting Irish (7-5, 1-0) head to Atlanta to battle the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets (6-7, 0-2) on Tuesday, Dec. 31, at 2:30 p.m. ET on ACC Network. The Irish look to achieve their first 2-0 ACC start since the 2017-18 season.

    IT’S ALWAYS CLOSE

Notre Dame will kickstart non-stop ACC play with a team they’ve waged epic battles with over time. The Irish lead the overall series 18-13 and executed a perfect 3-0 sweep over Georgia Tech last season, which included an 84-80 victory in Washington D.C. in the opening round of the ACC Tournament. But that doesn’t paint the whole picture of this rivalry.

Twenty-one of the last 23 games between these two have been decided by single digits. Five of those games have gone to overtime. Of those 21 games that have been decided by single digits, the average margin of victory has been 4.9.

It was the usual suspects who performed best against the Yellow Jackets last season. In the three wins, both Braeden Shrewsberry and Markus Burton averaged 17.0 ppg, while Tae Davis rounded out those in double-digits with 13.0 ppg. Shrewsberry shot 45.7 percent from the floor and 11-of-25 from deep. Davis shot 51.7 percent from the field and averaged 6.3 rpg. Kebba Njie averaged 7.7 ppg and a team-best 8.3 rpg.

    NEW YEAR’S TABLE SETTER

With a win on NYE, the Irish can win their fourth straight, matching their four straight to start the season. They can also pick up a coveted road ACC win which would move Notre Dame to 2-0 in ACC play for the first time since the 2017-18 campaign. That year they started 3-0 with wins over Georgia Tech, NC State and Syracuse.

Also both Braeden Shrewsberry and Tae Davis are riding career-best double-digit scoring streaks heading into the match. Shrewsberry has produced eight in a row, averaging 18.3 ppg in that span. Davis has earned seven straight, averaging 18.1 ppg in said stretch.

BUILDING CONFIDENCE AFTER THREE STRAIGHT WINS

When Markus Burton went down in Vegas, there was no time to practice nor strategize how to play without their All-ACC guard. There was only time to move on to the next game. After Georgia, the Irish finally had time to regroup and learn to play and win without him. Notre Dame banded together and have won three straight, which includes a conference win at home over Syracuse. They’ve been led by the dynamic duo of Shrewsberry and Davis.

Over the last three games, Shrewsberry is averaging 20.3 ppg on 54.1 percent shooting (20-37). He’s 11-of-24 (.458) from three-point range.Davis has produced back-to-back games with 20+ points for the first time of his career. During this three-game win streak, Tae is averaging 19.7 ppg on a blistering 67.7 percent shooting. He’s averaging 6.0 rpg as well.

Since December 7 (last three games for the Irish), Shrewsberry’s scoring average ranks as the fourth highest amongst ACC players while Davis’ ranks sixth.

As a team, the Irish have averaged 79.0 ppg on 48.8 percent shooting over the last three.

    MAKING UP POINTS

Before Vegas, Burton was the only player in the country averaging 20+ points, 5+ assists, and 5+ rebounds. Now the Irish continue to work together to make up the 20+ points per game lost along with Burton’s ability to create shots for his teammates.

Two players that have stepped up have been Tae Davis and Braeden Shrewsberry.

Tae has this explosiveness and innate ability to attack the rim like no other on the team. He’s been using that to his advantage and currently averaging a career-best 15.8 ppg on a career-high 53.3 percent shooting. Tae ranks third in the ACC in field goal percentage.

Where is the Indy native getting it done? Well, he’s shooting 43-of-64 (.672) from around the rim. He leads the team in free throw attempts (6.3) and free throws made (4.7) per game. He’s shooting a career-best 74.7 percent from the stripe.

Then there’s Shrewsberry, who is averaging a career-best 16.5 ppg, which ranks ninth in the ACC. In addition, his 2.8 threes per game rank second in the league, while his .354 clip from three ranks fourth. Shrewsberry is hot from corner threes this year, knocking down 47.6 percent (10-for-21), which is 12.9 percent above the D1 average.

    So who’s next?

Well there’s Matt Allocco, who is averaging 11.0 ppg since Burton went down. Allocco is shooting a team-best 46.4 percent from deep in that seven-game span.

Allocco also boasts a 4.2 assist-to-turnover ratio which ranks sixth in the nation and leads all ACC players. It’s obviously way too early for comparisons, BUT, the highest A/TO ratio in program history for a season was 3.16 by Martin Inglesby back in 2000-01.

    NOTRE NOTABLES

    • The Irish have been cleaning up around the glass. They are averaging 27.8 defensive rebounds per game which ranks fourth in the ACC and 45th in the nation.
    • Notre Dame is shooting 47.5 percent from the field which ranks fourth in the ACC as well.
    • According to HaslamMetrics.com, Notre Dame’s mid-range percentage vs. the average opponent (47.7) is the best it’s been since the 2015-16 squad. Also, Notre Dame’s near proximity percentage vs. the average opponent (63.5) is the highest it’s been since the 2020-21 season.
    • Another thing the Irish have done well is create tough three-point looks for its opponents. Notre Dame’s three-point field goal percentage defense of .296 ranks fourth in the ACC. According to HaslamMetrics once again, ND’s three-point percentage allowed against the average opponent (28.4) ranks 12th nationally. That’s the highest ranking they’ve had in that category in a decade.
    • Logan Imes recorded a breakout game vs. Le Moyne on Dec. 22. Imes recorded a career high 11 points on 3-5 shooting, plus 5-6 from the free-throw line. He also tied his career high in assists (4) and steals (2).
    • Kebba Njie is averaging a career-best 6.8 ppg and a career-high 5.9 rpg.

Authorities: State court judge dies by suicide at Effingham County Courthouse

A state court judge is dead after authorities say he took his own life at the Effingham County Courthouse.

Um, do you have any opening statements or do you want to just go straight into? I hadn’t really prepared anything. Um, at approximately 10, 10:30 this morning. We received *** call that there was *** possible suicide at the courthouse. We came over. The court folks And already found Judge Yeo. It appears to be *** self-inflicted gunshot wound. However, it’s *** pending investigation. We’re going for an autopsy and we’ll know more as the, the interview I’m at the uh investigation goes on forward. Um, you said that he was found around between 10 and 11 this morning. Is there any idea of when he may have actually, uh, committed suicide? It looks like it was last night and we’re going on the pretext that, uh, suicide, but you know, you had to do everything to, to see that it is so. Was there any note or anything left behind? Did you guys find anything? Have you been to the residence yet? Uh, we understand there was note sent to the governor. I’m not sure yet what that is, but we’ll, we’ll look at that. No note as Right now. There is *** copy of that note circulating on social media. We haven’t been able to confirm its authenticity yet, so just clarify that. But it appeared that Judge Yekel had tried to resign from his position and that the governor’s office may have rejected that resignation. Are y’all able to confirm whether any of that is accurate? Yes, it is accurate. That happened. Uh, one day last week, I think it’s when all that came out, uh, the resignation was supposed to been final yesterday, but the governor didn’t accept it. I don’t remember the date that that came out, but it was one day last week. Also on social media there was *** former assistant of the previous judge that worked here who said that there was *** lawsuit against the um Judge Yeko. Was there any belief that this had any involvement and with that, is there any result of what that investigation might have been through? I hadn’t heard of any anything on that, um, no lawsuit that I’m aware of, but you know they do those through private attorneys, so we don’t know about it until papers are served. Can you talk about Yokel’s um previous? Does he have any, you know, any charges against him or any kind of criminal activity? No, nothing that, nothing that we’re aware of. Um, I talked to. Linda Smith at UBI this morning and she didn’t say anything about it but we text back and forth with her. What are the other agencies involved in this investigation? Right now just the sheriff’s office. Will GBI be involved through the investigation? No, not at this point. Uh, GBI will do the autopsy. Of course we have to do that through them, but they, they’ll be involved in as far as the autopsy goes. Is there any word on who discovered his body? It was one of my deputies. I don’t know right now which one, but it was one of our, our deputies, so. And that was in *** courtroom, or, um. Was court is supposed to be in session today? No, he didn’t have any court this week. Did he have anything yesterday? Uh, I don’t remember. I was in and out yesterday, but I don’t remember of anything. Usually this time of year, everything’s winding down, so you don’t have too much, but he could have, but I’m just not sure. Um, Sheriff, I know that, you know, y’all in the legal community obviously work very closely together. Um, do you have any comments just for the community or the judge’s family at this time? Yes, and, you know, we want to offer them our condolences, uh, you know, this is never good for anybody. The family’s distraught. I mean it’s supposed to be *** happy time this time of year, and now they’ve got this. I think he’s got some sons that are law enforcement too, so they know what it’s like, but I can’t imagine if they have anything that they need from us we’ll be available and and make stuff available to them going forward. Are you asking for any help from the community on possibly uncovering *** reason for this, any me or premeditated reason for what happened? Of course if anybody knows of anything we would appreciate *** phone call um there’s not much that we know in the community that that would be unless he spoke to somebody uh individually but uh we have talked with his secretary and she’s been with us the entire time through the investigation. Has she hinted on anything? Apparently she didn’t know anything either so it was all *** surprise to her as well. for me. Thank you. Thank y’all. Thank you.
