  • Schools in Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, Jacksonville area, closed

As Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida recover from the winter storm, some schools will remain closed Thursday. This list will be updated as news comes in.

GEORGIA, — This story will be updated as news comes in.

Several counties across the First Coast, were under a Winter Storm Warning Tuesday night into Wednesday as wintry precipitation, and in some areas, snow, descended.

Many school districts that were closed Wednesday will now reopen Thursday. However, due to power outages and icy conditions, some school districts are choosing to remain closed Thursday.

So far, all local Florida counties will return to school Thursday. However, that is subject to change, and we will update if closures are announced.

Here’s which school districts will not reopen:

    Nassau County

Here’s what the school district said about Thursday:

“Based on the 5:00 PM update from the National Weather Service, it has been determined that Nassau County residents should avoid driving until 10:00 AM tomorrow, Thursday, January 23. As a result, Nassau County Schools will remain closed tomorrow.

We understand that the timing of this decision may be frustrating, but the unprecedented nature of this weather and the rapidly changing impact on our roads necessitated a late update. We sincerely appreciate our community’s understanding and ongoing commitment to the safety of our students and staff.”

    Glynn County

Due to icy roads and widespread power outages, Glynn County Schools will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23. This closure includes all after-school and athletic activities. Weather permitting and a thorough assessment of our school buildings, school is expected to resume on Friday, Jan. 24.

The district will communicate any updates through ParentSquare, the district website, Facebook page, and media partners.

    Ware County

Due to the ongoing effects from the winter weather event, all Ware County schools and the Central Office will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025.

The Ware County Emergency Management Agency has requested that everyone stay off the roads unless travel is absolutely necessary.

A decision regarding school operations for Friday, January 24, 2025, will be made on Thursday after further assessment of conditions.

    Pierce County

Pierce County Schools will remain closed Thursday, January 23 due to hazardous road conditions. All after school activities will be canceled.

“We will evaluate road conditions and weather tomorrow to make a decision about Friday. It is a great day to stay home, stay warm, and make a snowman!” said School Superintendent Dara Bennett.

    Camden County

Due to the widespread impacts of Winter Storm Enzo, including icy roads, power outages, and expected freezing temperatures, Camden County Schools will remain closed on Thursday, January 23, 2025. This includes all after-school activities and events.

    Charlton County

Due to widespread power outages and the possibility of hazardous road conditions, Charlton County Schools will be closed Thursday. Officials plan on reopening school on Friday.

Due to inclement weather conditions, schools in the Northeast Florida and Southeast Georgia, Jacksonville area will be closed today. Please stay safe and warm during this time. Stay tuned for updates on when schools will reopen. Thank you for your understanding.

  • Georgia finishes sixth in nation after CFP Quarterfinal loss

The final AP Poll of the season is out, and Georgia will finish 2024 ranked No. 6. After claiming the College Football Playoff National Championship last night with a win over Notre Dame, Ohio State comes in atop the rankings according to the 56 voters with the Irish just behind them at No. 2. Semifinalists Texas and Penn State are ranked No. 4 and No. 5 respectively with Oregon, which went unbeaten up until the Playoffs, sandwiched in between at No. 3.

Georgia’s ranking outside the top 5 is a first since 2020, hoisting the National Championship trophy on the final Monday night of the season in 2021 and 2022 before impressively dominating Florida State to finish as the first non-Playoff team in last year’s final AP Poll. Under Kirby Smart’s direction, the Bulldogs have finished outside the top-10 just once – 2016, Smart’s first season in Athens.

It’s now officially the offseason in College Football, which has been the case at Georgia for a few weeks now. UGA saw its season come to an end on January 2nd in New Orleans at the hands of Notre Dame. Gunner Stockton made his first career start in place of an injured Carson Beck, and the Bulldogs just couldn’t quite do enough around him to help. A pair of first half turnovers proved costly as Notre Dame scored its only offensive touchdown of the game when given the short field just before the halftime break. Then, when the Irish returned the opening kickoff for a 98-yard touchdown, Georgia found itself trailing by three scores, 20-3.

Stockton, who enters 2025 as the expected starter for Georgia, finished the game throwing for 234 yards and a 32-yard touchdown completion on 20-of-32 passing. The Bulldogs out-gained Notre Dame, but it was Riley Leonard (15-of-24, 90 passing yards, 1 touchdown, 14 attempts, 90 rushing yards) and the squad from South Bend that advanced to play Penn State in the Orange Bowl.

Since then, Georgia’s roster for next season has shaped up. Guys like Trevor Etienne, Tate Ratledge, Mykel Williams, Jalon Walker and Malaki Starks announced intentions to enter the NFL Draft. Carson Beck, after doing the same prior to the Sugar Bowl, surprisingly entered the transfer portal and decided on Miami as his next destination. He’s one of 12 players from this season’s team to do so.

It hasn’t been all bad news though for the Bulldogs. Georgia did get back the likes of Dillon Bell, Oscar Delp, Daylen Everette and Christen Miller – each of whom announced they would return for their fourth season in Athens. Transfer portal additions have included former five-star Zachariah Branch (USC), a proven SEC pass catcher Noah Thomas (Texas A&M) and an interesting trio of in the secondary (Zion Branch – USC, Jaden Harris – Miami, Adrian Maddox – UAB).

Georgia is considered to be a top-5 team by ESPN, Sporting News and Athlon Sports in each publication’s respective way-too-early preseason rankings for 2025 with a win total over/under set at 9.5 by FanDuel.

The Georgia Bulldogs put up a valiant fight in the College Football Playoff Quarterfinals, but ultimately fell short against their opponents. Despite the tough loss, Georgia finishes the season strong, claiming the sixth spot in the nation. The team showcased their talent and determination throughout the season, earning them a well-deserved spot among the top teams in the country. Congratulations to the Bulldogs on a successful season and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish next year. Go Dawgs! #GeorgiaFootball #CFPQuarterfinals #TopSixFinish

  • Parting shots on Georgia 2024 and College Football Playoff

ATHENS — Does Georgia football have enough on its roster to win a national championship in 2025?

Nothing like getting right to the point.

Kirby Smart is still in it to win championships, but the model has changed, and UGA — like most everyone else — is working on a new business model.

That doesn’t ease the pain or frustration of what proved to be a tough College Football Playoff season for the Bulldogs.

Right when it seemed like the program had finally caught a break, and everyone was enjoying the feel-good story of pickup truck driving, homegrown QB Gunner Stockton, the luck of the Irish kicked in.

It’s one thing to say that “sometimes it’s just not your day.”

But fact is, Georgia was far from at its best and made uncharacteristic mistakes on the field and in the coaching booth, and an opportunistic Notre Dame team that led the nation in takeaways took full advantage.

    Lessons Learned

Lessons were learned and realizations were made in these playoffs, and Georgia fans can take some comfort in knowing Smart is a fast learner who has a UGA administration that’s completely behind him.

History will reflect Georgia maintained its “dynasty” status with another SEC title under its belt and an unmatched active streak of eighth-straight Top 7 rankings.

The Bulldogs will penchant for producing NFL talent will be noted once again this offseason, with six UGA players headed to the Senior Bowl, and three players projected to be selected in the first round of the NFL draft.

Those are critical elements on Georgia’s resume that prospective players can and will take note of when considering the program.

Meanwhile, we know from history that Smart isn’t going to waste any time or negative energy looking back on the missed college football playoff opportunity.

It was Smart who famously said after a gut-wrenching 26-23 overtime loss to Alabama in the CFP Championship Game after the 2017 season that, “I’m not going to let that game beat me twice.”

So Smart went to work securing players that, four years later, won back-to-back titles after growing and competing within the program.

    New Twist

That’s happening again, but with the appreciable twist of NIL and a free agent transfer portal world shaping the collegiate football landscape.

Ohio State and Ole Miss served as prime examples that an aggressive approach to the transfer portal is where it’s at.

So more real talk here, OK?

On paper, Georgia doesn’t appear to have done enough — yet — to have the sort of roster that will take down the type of team that will be waiting for it in the playoffs next season.

Ohio State, far and away, was the most talented and best team in the College Football Playoffs.

The version of Bulldogs who limped to the finish with a backup quarterback and heavy attrition at receiver and in the running backs room would have had a tall order matching up with the Buckeyes, even had they gotten by Notre Dame and Penn State.

One could spend a day discussing how the newly expanded playoffs mitigated the importance of the regular season and conference championship games.

Indeed, Ohio State finished fourth-place in the Big Ten and didn’t even appear in the Big Ten Championship Game.

    Only Three

To think, only three SEC teams made the playoffs in a season that saw only four Big Ten teams finish in the Top 25, while the SEC produced seven.

It appears being a “top-heavy” conference isn’t such a bad thing in the world of expanded playoffs.

If a healthy and explosive fourth-place team from the Big Ten could win the national championship, it’s fair to wonder if a healthy, free-agent stocked SEC team with explosive offensive playmakers could have done the same.

    Lane Kiffin would surely agree.

Finishing this obituary on the 2024 season, it can be noted the SEC got a bad draw when it came to the priorities of this year’s CFP Selection Committee.

Smart once said — after the 2018 season — that “it will be different every year” when it comes to what the CFP Selection Committee values, and he has been proven correct.

This committee bypassed “schedule strength” and settled on “won-loss record.”

Somewhere, Florida State fans are crying.

Parity and depth was not rewarded in the CFP rankings this past season, and in fact proved a detrainment to the SEC.

    Coming Up

The NFL draft will surely reflect the SEC hasn’t dropped off, so much as its quality of play from top to bottom was too high for its own good.

    The league cannibalized itself.

Looking ahead, Georgia’s schedule is a bit more manageable this season.

It’s not exactly favorable, but at least this season Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas are coming to Athens, along with reasonable road trips to rivals Tennessee and Auburn ahead.

Rivals Florida and Georgia Tech provide some intrigue, both neutral site games at NFL stadiums in Jacksonville and Atlanta.

Oddsmakers have Georgia’s over/under win total at 10.5, and that sounds about right.

But the Bulldogs’ roster has enough holes that Smart and his staff will stay busy.

Rapid development, more talent acquisition in the second portal window and elite coaching will be musts for Georgia to content for the national title.

No doubt, there will be changes ahead, and at Georgia that has typically been a good thing.

    It Ain’t Broke

Another Smart saying: “If it ain’t broke, find a way to make it better.”

The 10th-year Georgia head coach has done that before.

Consider, the 2021 Georgia CFP Championship team replaced 15 NFL draft picks and 40 percent of its coaching staff, along 14 of 18 of the game captains.

This year’s team is in reload mode, too, with quarterback Carson Beck taking his NFL arm to Miami, and Trevor Etienne reversing field and choosing to bypass another season in Athens.

That’s a lot of offensive talent going out the door.

Georgia remains capable, but more offensive playmakers must be acquired or quickly developed, and a dangerous edge defender must emerge.

It would be wrong to default to thinking the Bulldogs will be “fine, just because” Smart has seemingly always found a way.

“Just because” isn’t good enough anymore — not with a 12-team playoff giving second and third chances to talented programs that get tripped up during the regular season.

The built-in first-round “bye” for conference championship teams didn’t prove to be the advantage some projected, as all four of those teams receiving a bye lost.

In fact none of the five conference champions managed to win even one playoff game.

That won’t and shouldn’t deter a team from trying to win its respective league title, nor should it diminish the value a conference championship represents.

    The Answer

But in building for the future, Smart needs to figure out exactly how best to prepare and structure his team for the new season an expanded 12-team playoff represents.

One answer that can’t be wrong is bringing in more impactful players through the transfer portal, and that means securing more NIL dollars and finding corporate sponsorship.

Final thought: Notre Dame and Ohio State had impact transfer quarterbacks under center in Will Howard (Kansas State) and Riley Leonard (Duke).

Does Georgia need to find a star quarterback out there somewhere to compete for a title next season, or are the in-house candidates good enough.

Stockton and rising talent Ryan Puglisi are certainly “good,” but does “good” translate to “good enough?”

That’s up to Kirby Smart to decide. He’s been here before, and he’s found a way to rebound and win national championships.

The game has changed, but the head coach hasn’t, and that guarantees Georgia will be working as hard at it this offseason as any other program in the nation.

As the 2024 College Football Playoff comes to a close, it’s time to reflect on the highs and lows of the Georgia Bulldogs’ journey.

Despite a strong regular season performance, the Bulldogs were ultimately defeated in the semifinals by a talented opponent. While it’s disappointing to see the team fall short of the national championship, Georgia fans can still take pride in their team’s accomplishments and the hard work of the players and coaching staff.

Looking ahead to the future, there are sure to be changes and improvements made by the Bulldogs in preparation for the next season. With a strong foundation and a dedicated fan base, there’s no doubt that Georgia will continue to be a force to be reckoned with in college football.

As we say goodbye to the 2024 College Football Playoff, let’s remember the excitement and passion that the game brings to fans across the country. And let’s look forward to the next season with hope and anticipation for what the Georgia Bulldogs and all college football teams will achieve.

  • Georgia football: Way-too-early rankings for 2025

Most publications have rolled out their way-too-early top 25 for the 2025 college football season. These publications will adjust their rankings several times before the official preseason rankings come out this summer. Georgia is coming off an 11-3 season, winning the SEC Championship, and losing in the College Football Playoff quarterfinal at the Sugar Bowl.

As far as starters departing, as of now, Georgia loses quarterback Carson Beck, running back Trevor Etienne, wide receivers Arian Smith and Dominic Lovett, offensive linemen Xavier Truss, Dylan Fairchild, Jared Wilson, and Tate Ratledge on offense. On defense, they lose defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse, defensive end Tyrion Ingram-Dawkins, linebackers Jalon Walker and Chaz Chambliss, cornerback Julian Humphrey, and safeties Malaki Starks and Dan Jackson.

Georgia is set to open the 2025 season on Aug. 30 at home against Marshall. The top 25 matchups on Georgia’s schedule based on the 247Sports way-too-early Top 25 are at No. 9 Tennessee on Sept. 13, vs No. 8 Alabama on Sept. 27, vs No. 20 Auburn on Oct. 11, vs No. 19 Ole Miss on Oct. 18, vs No. 13 Florida in Jacksonville on Nov. 1, and vs No. 1 Texas on Nov. 15.

Here is a look at where the Dawgs were ranked in these initial polls and explanations of the rankings for each one.

As we look ahead to the 2025 college football season, it’s never too early to start speculating on where the Georgia Bulldogs may land in the rankings. With a strong recruiting class and returning talent, here are our way-too-early rankings for Georgia football in 2025:

    1. Georgia Bulldogs
With head coach Kirby Smart at the helm and a roster stacked with top-tier talent, the Bulldogs are poised to be a force to be reckoned with in the 2025 season. Their defense is expected to be one of the best in the country, led by a dominant defensive line and a secondary that can shut down any passing attack.

    2. Alabama Crimson Tide
Alabama is always a perennial powerhouse in college football, and 2025 will be no exception. With quarterback Bryce Young leading the offense and a strong defense, the Crimson Tide will once again be a top contender for the national championship.

    3. Ohio State Buckeyes
Led by head coach Ryan Day, the Buckeyes are expected to have a potent offense in 2025. Quarterback Quinn Ewers is projected to be a star, and with a solid defense to back him up, Ohio State will be a tough team to beat.

    4. Clemson Tigers
Despite a down year in 2024, Clemson is expected to bounce back in 2025. Quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei will lead the offense, and the Tigers’ defense is always a force to be reckoned with. Expect Clemson to be back in contention for the ACC title.

    5. Oklahoma Sooners
With quarterback Caleb Williams leading the offense, the Sooners are expected to be a high-scoring team in 2025. Head coach Brent Venables will also bring a strong defensive mindset to Oklahoma, making them a well-rounded team to watch.

These rankings are just a way-too-early prediction and are subject to change as the season progresses. But one thing is for sure – Georgia football is shaping up to be a major contender in the 2025 season. Go Dawgs!

Coastal Carolina vs Georgia Southern College Basketball Betting Preview

These two teams were supposed to play last night, but because of weather, this game was moved to Thursday, giving us an early afternoon juicy Sun Belt game with betting value.

Coastal and Georgia Southern played a week ago in Conway, SC. That game went to overtime, with Georgia Southern winning by only one point, despite threatening to break things open twice with a nine-point lead and a seven-point lead.

But the Chants shot 48% from downtown in that game when they shoot 34% from deep for the season.

Now they have to go on the road and try to keep up in a fast-paced, likely high-scoring game.

The Chants are normally one of the slowest-paced teams in the nation (354th in adjusted tempo), while the Eagles are one of the fastest (39th in adjusted tempo).

Bart Torvik (+3.5) shows significant value on this spread in favor of the Chants. Meanwhile, Coastal is due for a bounce back after losing four straight.

But unless they can completely slow down the pace on the road again, I’m not sure Coastal has the goods to keep up a second time around.

How cold does it have to be to cancel school?

    By the numbers:

According to Atlanta Public Schools, the following guidelines are used to determine when it becomes too cold to operate in a normal capacity:

    • Over 60 degrees: No limitations
    • Below 60 degrees: A jacket and/or long sleeves recommended
    • Below 50 degrees: A coat and long pants are recommended
    • Below 40 degrees: Gloves and hats, along with the previously mentioned items

Children with health conditions, like asthma, may receive special accommodations during cold weather.

Superintendents also take the wind chill and opportunity for frostbite into consideration when deciding whether to cancel school. Unfortunately, there’s no “magic number” on the thermostat to hit.

How to Watch, BetSaracen Odds: Arkansas vs. Georgia

The Arkansas Razorbacks (11-7, 0-5 SEC) are still searching for their first win of Southeastern Conference play and will host the Georgia Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC) on Wednesday night at Bud Walton Arena.

Georgia is coming off a close 70-68 loss to No. 1 Auburn, while the Razorbacks got thumped on the road at Missouri last Saturday. Arkansas fell behind 18-2 to start the game and never recovered.

The Hogs will also be without their starting point guard, as Boogie Fland was listed as “out” in the first SEC Availability Report on Tuesday night, and according to a report from Jon Rothstein will be out for the remainder of the season.

Head coach John Calipari revealed after last Saturday’s game the freshman hurt his hand in the game against Florida the weekend prior. In his place, the Razorbacks are planning to use a committee-style approach at the point guard spot, associate head coach Chin Coleman said Tuesday.

“Obviously it’s natural for D.J. to move into that role,” Coleman said. “He’s done it his whole life. He’s done it in his career. So it’s an easy fix for him just moving to that role. But committee wise, Johnell (Davis) will have to take some of that responsibility, and Billy Richmond, who has played that position some in high school. It’s different obviously on this level, but he has played the position so we’re going to ask for him to take some of that.

  • Georgia basketball shooting for bracketology boost at Arkansas

ATHENS — A road win at Arkansas on Wednesday night isn’t necessarily a “must-win” for a Georgia basketball team striving to build an NCAA tournament resume.

But the 9 p.m. tip in Fayetteville represents one heck of an opportunity for the Bulldogs (14-4, 2-3 SEC) to steal a road win in the ultra-competitive SEC.

Georgia was most recently projected as a No. 8 seed in the NCAA tournament — one of 12 SEC teams currently expected in the field — per ESPN bracketology expert Joe Lunardi.

The Bulldogs have an average rank of 31.8 among six popular metrics (NET, KenPom, Jorvik, KPI, BPO and SOR), according to a recent UGA release.

Beating the Razorbacks — UGA is a 1-point underdog and has lost seven straight in Bud Walton Arena dating back to a 60-59 win in 2011 — would provided a boost to the Bulldogs’ postseason resume

Georgia, coming off losses at No. 6 Tennessee (74-56) last Wednesday and at home against No. 1 Auburn (70-68) on Saturday, will be facing an uncharacteristically cold Razorbacks (11-7, 0-5) team.

The Razorbacks spent six of the first eight weeks this season under first-year coach John Calipari ranked in the Top 25 on the strength of 11 wins against a schedule that KenPom.com ranks as the 46th toughest in the nation.

Arkansas is expected to be without freshman point guard Boogie Fland, the team’s second-leading scorer (15.1 points per game) and assists leader (103).

Fland injured his hand in the Razorbacks’ 71-63 loss to Florida on Jan. 11 and has been fighting to play through the injury.

Fland, who was a 5-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American coming out of Archbishop Stepinac High School (N.Y.) in the Bronx, played 85-percent of the minutes possible and accounted for 25 percent of the Razorbacks’ shot volume.

Georgia’s only road win to this point was back on Nov. 15, when the Bulldogs beat Georgia Tech (8-11) by a 77-69 count in McCamish Pavilion.

The road will get even rockier later this week for the Bulldogs, who dropped their first two road SEC games at No. 16 Ole Miss (15-3) and at Thompson-Boling Arena in Knoxville, as they travel to play at No. 5 Florida (16-2) on Saturday.

Georgia’s schedule strength ranks only 76th — 12th among SEC teams — despite opening the league slate playing Top 25 opposition in its first five conference games.

Such metrics will take care of themselves as the Bulldogs wade deeper into the SEC waters, but wins will need to be part of the equation for Georgia to make what would be its first NCAA tournament appearance in 10 years.

Lunardi suggested last week SEC teams could make the NCAA tourney fields as an at-large even with league marks as low as 7-11 or 6-12.

That’s not where Coach Mike White’s mindset is at, of course, as he works to identify and improve the team’s ball movement.

The Bulldogs rank last in the SEC in assist/turnover ratio in league games, averaging just 7.8 per outing.

Florida and Arkansas, however, rank 15th and 16th in the SEC in league games in the steals category, which could provide optimism for the Georgia backcourt.

Big picture, White knows he has a capable UGA team that’s in the midst of raising the bar on the basketball culture, and a road win at Arkansas — or any SEC school — would go a long way toward that.

The Georgia basketball team is gearing up for a crucial matchup against Arkansas as they look to secure a spot in the NCAA Tournament. With March Madness right around the corner, every game is critical for the Bulldogs as they aim to improve their seeding and boost their chances of making a deep run in the tournament.

Currently sitting on the bubble, Georgia knows that a win against Arkansas could be just what they need to solidify their spot in the bracket. The Bulldogs have been playing some of their best basketball as of late, with impressive wins over ranked opponents like Kentucky and Tennessee.

Led by star guard Sahvir Wheeler and forward Toumani Camara, Georgia has the talent and experience to compete with the best teams in the country. If they can continue their strong play and come out with a win against Arkansas, they will undoubtedly catch the attention of the selection committee and improve their chances of making it to the Big Dance.

So, Georgia fans, get ready to cheer on your Bulldogs as they take on Arkansas in a game that could have major implications for their postseason hopes. Let’s go Dawgs! #MarchMadness #Bracketology #GoDawgs
