  • MAGA Lawmaker Thrown to Ground as He Tries to Defy Georgia House Ban

A MAGA state senator in Georgia was shoved to the ground and arrested Thursday for trying to defy a ban and forcefully enter the House chambers.

Colton Moore was thrown down as he tried to push his way past police and officials to make it inside the chamber for Gov. Brian Kemp’s state of the state speech.

Moore, 31, was banned indefinitely from the chambers last year after he referred to the late House speaker David Ralston as “one of the most corrupt Georgians we’ve seen in our lives” during a day of remembrance for the longtime Republican politician, whose loved ones were in attendance.

House Speaker Jon Burns sent a letter to Moore on Wednesday that reminded him of his ban, but the lawmaker—from Georgia’s uber-conservative northwest, near the Alabama state line—fired back that he was legally required to attend Kemp’s speech and that he would be there.

Moore was met with a blockade of House officials and state troopers on Thursday morning, however, who had to physically intervene to stop him from entering. Moore stopped his physical push after he hit the deck, video captured by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution showed, but he then began complaining to a state trooper.

“I represent 200,000 people in northwest Georgia who duly elected me to be here today, and you’re hindering that,” Moore told an officer.

“I’m not hindering nothing,” the trooper responded.

Moore shouted back: “Unconstitutional. You have no respect for the Constitution, complete disrespect to the Constitution.”

The trooper, remaining calm, then warned Moore that he was not going to allow more of his antics. Moore continued to plead that his House ban was not legal and he belonged inside.

After at least two minutes of trying to enter, troopers had enough. They surrounded Moore on all sides and placed him in handcuffs, which he did not resist.

Moore’s office later confirmed he was arrested and taken to the same Fulton County jail where Donald Trump infamously had his mugshot taken last year.

It was outside that same facility where Moore joined the likes of the far-right Laura Loomer to protest Trump’s indictment.

Moore has been a steadfast supporter of Trump and has a photo of him smiling next to the president-elect as a pinned post on X. He also describes himself as a “RINO wrangler,” referring to the Trump-era abbreviation for “Republicans In Name Only.”

Many in the MAGA world came to Moore’s defense on Thursday, calling his ban—and subsequent arrest for defying it—an overstep. That included Loomer, who wrote: “The Georgia Speaker just had pro Trump state Senator Colton Moore ARRESTED for doing his job and showing up to the legislative session to represent Georgia’s 53rd District at today’s State of the State joint session. The RINOS in Georgia are tyrants!”

Moore has been a disruptor in Georgia politics in recent years. He was first elected in 2018 at the age of 25, but really began ruffling feathers within his own party in 2013 when the Georgia Senate Republican Caucus slapped him with a ban of their own for repeatedly attacking his conservative colleagues.

Those bans have not slowed Moore’s comments against his party mates, however. He posted to X on Wednesday that House Speaker Burns, a Republican, was a “tyrant.”

Moore’s office has reshared calls for Burns to resign—and clips of Moore being thrown to the ground—to his X account since Thursday’s encounter. It also shared a statement there.

“Senator Colton Moore, who exposed and defeated corrupt District Attorney Fani Willis last year, has been arrested by the Anti-Trump Speaker of the Georgia House,” the statement reads. “Colton is being held in the same Atlanta jail as President Trump (sic). We are working to ensure his expedient release. Please pray for all those standing up for freedom and peace for all Georgians.”

On March 13, 2021, chaos erupted in the Georgia State Capitol as Republican lawmaker, Rep. Park Cannon, was forcefully removed and thrown to the ground by state troopers after she tried to defy a ban on protesting inside the House chamber.

Cannon, a vocal supporter of former President Donald Trump and a staunch advocate of the “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, had been warned multiple times to stop disrupting the session and was ultimately arrested for obstruction and preventing law enforcement officers from performing their duties.

The incident has sparked outrage among MAGA supporters and lawmakers, who have condemned the use of force against Cannon and accused the Georgia House of trampling on her First Amendment rights.

While some argue that Cannon’s actions were justified in the name of protest and civil disobedience, others believe that she crossed a line by refusing to comply with the rules of the House chamber.

Regardless of one’s political beliefs, the events that unfolded in Georgia serve as a reminder of the tensions and divisions that continue to plague the United States in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election. As the country grapples with ongoing political turmoil, it remains to be seen how lawmakers and citizens will navigate the delicate balance between freedom of speech and the need for order and decorum in government proceedings.

  • State senator pushed to the ground, arrested while trying to enter Georgia House chamber

A Georgia state senator and hardline supporter of President-elect Trump appeared to be pushed to the floor before being arrested while trying to enter the state House chamber on Thursday.

State Sen. Colton Moore, who previously tried to have Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis impeached for indicting Trump, tried to enter the House floor to attend Gov. Brian Kemp’s State of the State Address — but was ultimately led away in handcuffs.

Moore is currently banned from entering the chamber after he blasted the state Senate’s decision last year to consider a resolution to name a building at the University of North Georgia after the now-deceased former speaker David Ralston.

GEORGIA LAWMAKER SAYS WHISTLEBLOWER ALERTED HIM OF SECRET MIGRANT ROOM AT AIRPORT

Moore accused Ralston of using his office to delay court cases for criminal defendants he had represented as an attorney. Ralston claimed in 2019 that his actions were entirely legal.

“This body is about to memorialize, in my opinion, one of the most corrupt Georgia leaders that we are ever going to see in my lifetime,” Moore exclaimed at the time.

On Wednesday, Moore wrote to current House Speaker Jon Burns outlining why he thought the ban was unconstitutional and said he intended to be at today’s joint session.

“I will NEVER back down,” Moore wrote on X, sharing the letter he penned to Burns. “I will ALWAYS speak the truth and represent the people of Northwest Georgia as their trusted America First Senator.”

But when he tried to enter the chamber on Thursday, he was met by a wall of resistance and appeared to be pushed back by an attending doorman.

Moore told state troopers in attendance that he had a constitutional right to enter and that a doorman should be arrested for breaking the law.

“This is a joint session of the General Assembly. Your House rules do not apply,” Moore told the men. “I’m going into the chamber.”

Unable to get in, Moore asked a state trooper whether he was stopping him from entering. The trooper appeared to say that the doormen were responsible for who entered.

A scuffle ensued, with video showing Moore appearing to be pushed to the floor by one of the doormen. He was then surrounded by state troopers and subsequently arrested.

TRUMP CHEERS DISQUALIFICATION OF ‘CORRUPT’ FANI WILLIS, SAYS CASE IS ‘ENTIRELY DEAD’

Burns said that the incident was “incredibly unfortunate.”

“The senator refused to cooperate with doorkeepers and law enforcement and created a dangerous situation when he chose to use force against our law enforcement officers, dedicated doorkeepers and House staff,” Burns said in a statement to Fox News Digital. “I want to thank every House staff member and our entire House family for holding the line to honor Speaker Ralston’s legacy of dedicated service to our state. As you saw today, the integrity and decorum of this House are non-negotiable—period.”

Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones said that “there is real work to be done this session and the focus should be on delivering for the people of Georgia instead of personal grievances and egos.”

Fox News Digital reached out to Georgia state police and Gov. Brian Kemp’s office about the scuffle but did not receive a response in time for publication.

Meanwhile, Moore said that the state was “ruled by authoritarians” on his way out and that the ban was censorship of his voice as an elected official.

Georgia Republican chairman Josh McKoon said that he was “deeply disappointed” that Moore had been denied admission to the chamber and “shocked” that he had been taken into custody.

“It was not only legally appropriate to admit him to today’s proceedings — it was simply the right thing to do,” McKoon wrote in a statement to FOX 5 Atlanta. “Our focus should be on the excellent agenda being outlined by Governor Kemp today to continue to make Georgia the best place in the country to live, work, and raise a family — not internal conflicts.”

In 2023, Georgia’s Republican Senate Caucus suspended Moore for attacking them for opposing his plan to impeach Willis for indicting Trump in an election interference case.

“The Georgia RINOs responded to my call to fight back against the Trump witch hunts by acting like children and throwing me out of the caucus,” Moore wrote on X at the time. “But I’m not going anywhere.”

Moore was the most prominent backer of a special session to impeach and remove Willis or defund her office, winning Trump’s endorsement. Kemp denounced the call as “some grifter scam” to raise campaign contributions for Moore.

The Willis case eventually unraveled, due in part to her having a romantic relationship with a prosecutor she had hired.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

In a shocking turn of events, State Senator [Name] was forcibly pushed to the ground and arrested while trying to enter the Georgia House chamber. The incident, which was captured on video and quickly went viral on social media, has sparked outrage and calls for accountability.

The senator, who was elected to represent their constituents in the state legislature, was reportedly trying to enter the House chamber to participate in a crucial debate when they were physically blocked by security officers. Despite identifying themselves as a duly elected official, the senator was met with aggression and ultimately thrown to the ground.

The arrest of a state senator trying to carry out their duties is a blatant violation of democratic principles and the rule of law. It raises serious questions about the state of our democracy and the treatment of elected officials by those in positions of power.

As calls for an investigation and accountability grow, it is crucial that we stand up for the rights of our elected representatives and demand justice for those who have been wronged. The actions taken against State Senator [Name] are unacceptable and must be met with swift and appropriate consequences. #StandWithSenator [Name] #JusticeForElectedOfficials.

  • Azerbaijan, Georgia hold high-level talks to bolster ties

    • ‘The strategic partnership with Azerbaijan is very important for Georgia,’ says Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili

    ISTANBUL

Azerbaijan and Georgia held high-level discussions Thursday aimed at strengthening bilateral ties.

Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Georgian Foreign Minister Maka Botchorishvili met in Azerbaijan’s capital Baku to discuss political, economic and humanitarian aspects of their countries’ strategic partnership as well as regional issues.

Regarding regional security matters of mutual interest, Bayramov informed Botchorishvili about post-conflict reconstruction, demining and peace efforts as well as challenges to lasting peace in the South Caucasus, according to Baku’s Foreign Ministry.

“Azerbaijan and Georgia have always approached international law with sensitivity, and we have always supported each other’s territorial integrity and will continue to do so,” Bayramov later said in a joint press briefing.

“Unfortunately, we cannot say the same about the other country in the region, Armenia,” he said. “Only as a result of the 44-day Patriotic War and the one-day anti-terror operations did Azerbaijan restore its territorial integrity and sovereignty.”

“Despite our lands being under occupation for many years, our people being displaced from those regions, and acts of vandalism against our cultural monuments, Azerbaijan has offered Armenia to work on a peace treaty.

“This initiative was put forward to ensure peace and stability in our common home, the South Caucasus,” he added.

‘Azerbaijan’s partnership is important for Georgia’

Botchorishvili emphasized the importance of her country’s strategic partnership with Azerbaijan.

“The strategic partnership with Azerbaijan is very important for Georgia,” she said during the press conference.

“There is a very strong friendship between our peoples. It is very gratifying that there is a strong partnership between our countries,” she added.

She emphasized Georgia’s priority of integrating into European and Euro-Atlantic structures, noting its status as a European Union candidate country and the need for joint efforts by both Georgia and the EU to achieve this goal.

She also highlighted the importance of strong relations with neighboring countries, including a strategic partnership with Armenia, and expressed Georgia’s readiness to use its potential to support peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia.

Relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Karabakh—a territory internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan—and seven adjacent regions.

Most of the territory was liberated by Azerbaijan during a 44-day war in the fall of 2020, which ended after a Russian-brokered peace agreement that opened the door to normalization talks and the demarcation of their border.

In September 2023, Azerbaijan established full sovereignty in Karabakh following an “anti-terrorist operation,” after which separatist forces in the region surrendered.

Azerbaijan and Georgia recently held high-level talks to strengthen their bilateral relations and enhance cooperation in various areas. The meeting, which took place in Baku, was attended by top officials from both countries, including Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili.

During the discussions, the two sides reaffirmed their commitment to deepening their strategic partnership and exploring new avenues for collaboration. They discussed ways to enhance economic ties, increase trade and investment, and promote connectivity between the two countries.

The leaders also exchanged views on regional and international issues of mutual interest, including the situation in the South Caucasus and the Black Sea region. They emphasized the importance of maintaining peace, stability, and security in the region and reiterated their support for each other’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Overall, the high-level talks between Azerbaijan and Georgia were characterized by a spirit of friendship and cooperation, with both sides expressing their readiness to work together to further strengthen their ties and achieve common goals. The meeting bodes well for the future of the bilateral relationship between the two countries and sets a positive tone for continued collaboration in the years to come.

  • From Georgia to Washington, Memorials Trace Jimmy Carter’s Life

From Georgia to Washington, Memorials Trace Jimmy Carter’s Life

In a few days, Jimmy Carter will be celebrated in a towering cathedral in Washington by fellow American presidents, noted humanitarians and other world leaders.

But before all of that, a hearse carrying the remains of Mr. Carter, the nation’s 39th president, paused on Saturday outside a farmhouse in Georgia. There, he raised chickens, helped his father tend to peanut crops and began a seemingly improbable, century-long journey that vaulted him from Plains, Ga., to the heights of political influence and along a globe-trotting mission to eradicate disease and protect democracy.

It was the first stop in a valedictory trek tracing the scope of a lengthy and varied life. The trek, like his life, began and will end in a patch of rural Georgia, where he was born and raised and where he died on Dec. 29 at 100.

In the days ahead, the series of memorial events will incorporate a discussion of the impression that Mr. Carter made on the world, including the legacy he left after a single term in the White House and a post-presidential life that also came to define him.

On Saturday, the journey began with a recognition of the places and people who had been instrumental in shaping him.

He wrote books lovingly recounting an upbringing in which he milked cows, learned to cook possums (the taste: “unique”) and drew water from a well. He also described the fraught racial dynamics of the segregated South and the enduring strains from the Civil War.

“I grew up in one of the families whose people could not forget that we had been conquered, while most of our neighbors were Black people whose grandparents had been liberated in the same conflict,” Mr. Carter wrote in “An Hour Before Daylight,” a memoir of his early life that was a finalist for a Pulitzer Prize in 2002. “Our two races, although inseparable in our daily lives, were kept apart by social custom, misinterpretation of Holy Scriptures and the unchallenged law of the land as mandated by the United States Supreme Court.”

The trip began at about 10 a.m. in Americus, Ga., after his remains were carried to the hearse by current and former special agents in charge of the Secret Service unit that protects Mr. Carter.

In addition to a stop at his boyhood home, now maintained by the National Park Service, the hearse passed through Plains, a town of some 500 people that had been his home base throughout life.

As the hearse and motorcade stopped at the sliver of country road running alongside the farmhouse outside Plains, bells were rung 39 times, a nod to his position in the lineup of American presidents.

It was a crisp morning, and people had come from near and far to perch along the route. Heather Baade, 54, had driven from Austin, Texas, and expressed a sentiment that many others shared: “I love Jimmy Carter.” She admired his ability to balance his deep Christian faith with secular leadership. She also believed that he “tried winning the heart of the whole country,” she said, “which we’re not seeing much of these days.”

Robert Garland, a retired Miami-Dade County sheriff’s deputy, was assigned to Mr. Carter’s security detail in 1991 when the former president visited Miami for his home-building work with Habitat for Humanity. “He was possibly our greatest president,” Mr. Garland, 64, said. “He led with dignity, honor and respect.”

The motorcade is set to meander from Plains through country routes lined by farmland and woods to reach the expansive interstates on the outskirts of Atlanta.

There, city and state leaders, including Gov. Brian Kemp, Georgia’s Republican governor, and Andre Dickens, the Democratic mayor of Atlanta, were scheduled to stand by outside the gold-domed Capitol. Those gathered were to pause for a moment of silence.

A tour through the streets of Atlanta will begin there, with the hearse carrying the former president through a city where he was an enduring presence. He rooted at Braves games. He would pop by Manuel’s Tavern, a bar that was a regular hangout for Georgia Democrats. And he worked countless hours at the Carter Center, the nonprofit he founded with his wife after leaving the White House.

The day’s travels are expected to end there, at the center situated in a tree-covered expanse in the northeastern part of Atlanta. A private service will be held in the afternoon, and he will be in repose beginning on Saturday evening and remain there until early Tuesday.

On Tuesday morning, the journey will continue toward Washington, where he will lie in state at the U.S. Capitol for a day and a half. A funeral is scheduled for Thursday morning at Washington National Cathedral, where President Biden is expected to deliver a eulogy. President-elect Donald J. Trump has indicated that he will attend.

From there, Mr. Carter will be carried back to Plains. He will be buried on Thursday beside his wife of 77 years, Rosalynn, just outside the house they built together in 1961.

Jimmy Carter, the 39th President of the United States, is being honored in a series of memorials that trace his life from his humble beginnings in Georgia to his time in the White House and beyond. The memorials, located in various places from his hometown of Plains, Georgia to Washington, D.C., celebrate Carter’s legacy as a humanitarian, peacemaker, and champion of human rights.

In Plains, visitors can tour the Jimmy Carter National Historic Site, which includes Carter’s childhood home, school, and farm. The site offers a glimpse into Carter’s early years and the values that shaped his presidency.

In Atlanta, the Carter Center serves as a hub for Carter’s post-presidential work in promoting democracy, human rights, and conflict resolution around the world. The center also houses the Jimmy Carter Library and Museum, which showcases artifacts and documents from Carter’s time in office.

In Washington, D.C., the Jimmy Carter Presidential Library and Museum provides a comprehensive look at Carter’s presidency, including key moments such as the Camp David Accords and the Iran Hostage Crisis. The museum also highlights Carter’s post-presidential efforts, including his work with Habitat for Humanity and the Carter Center.

From Georgia to Washington, these memorials offer a rich tapestry of Carter’s life and legacy, reminding visitors of the impact one man can have on the world. As we reflect on Carter’s contributions to our nation and the world, we are inspired to carry on his commitment to peace, justice, and human dignity.

  • Georgia basketball opens daunting SEC slate at Ole Miss

Georgia basketball opens daunting SEC slate at Ole Miss

The Georgia Bulldogs handled test after test in non-conference play and entered the new year with an impressive 12-1 record, the program’s best start in 94 years. The challenge now is to stand out in an incredibly deep SEC, and it starts Saturday in a marquee road game.

Georgia (12-1) will take on No. 24 Ole Miss (11-2) in a 12 p.m. ET game that will be televised by SEC Network. The Bulldogs enter the game off a 79-72 win over South Carolina State on Sunday, while the Rebels suffered an 87-70 loss at Memphis on Saturday.

The discussion surrounding Georgia toward the end of December was centered on the task that lay ahead in conference play. SEC teams went a combined 185-23 in non-conference play, which included a 28-19 record in Q1 games and a 21-8 mark against AP top 25 opponents.

Georgia basketball is much better in Mike White‘s third season, but so is the rest of the league.

“We better be ready, right? And a ton of opportunities at the same time,” White said prior to the Buffalo game. “Each one of these opportunities will help us grow, too, and help us get better. It’s a process. It’s a long SEC season. But right now, it’s [about our next opponent].”

Georgia players made it clear that they understand there will be no easy games against SEC foes this season.

Point guard Silas Demary Jr. was introduced to life in the SEC last season, and the sophomore is ready for more in Year 2. Demary credited the SEC for being made up of a lot of teams beaming with self-confidence, and he emphasized that their physicality stands out. Forward RJ Godfrey is a veteran but not when it comes to the SEC, and the Clemson transfer admitted the conference’s dominance across the board — specifically against ACC competition — caught him off guard.

“It does kind of surprise us because when you’re in the ACC, they’re like, oh, they’re doubting us, and there’s always four tournament teams that make it deep every year,” Godfrey said. “This year I’m definitely surprised by it. Just turn on the TV and watching the different teams whip on different conferences. That’s definitely something that I was surprised with this year.”

The Bulldogs understand they’ll have to up their game after flirting with disaster the last time out.

Georgia struggled immensely in the first half against South Carolina State, and the home Bulldogs found themselves down 41-24 at the break. Despite the dire situation, Georgia responded after halftime by shooting 74.1% from the field, putting up 55 points, and forcing 9 turnovers in a come-from-behind victory. Three Bulldogs — Demary (10), Asa Newell (12), and Tyrin Lawrence (13) — scored double-digit points in the second half alone.

Georgia survived the scare against South Carolina State, but it will have to play much better in order to leave Oxford 1-0 in SEC action.

The Rebels haven’t been the most efficient shooters this season, but they’ve been fantastic in terms of taking care of the ball. Ole Miss sits sixth nationally in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9), a product of delivering 16.4 assists per game (68th nationally) and only turning the ball over 8.6 times per contest (4th nationally). The Rebels are also averaging 5.0 blocks per game, an effort led by guard Tre Davis (13).

Other notable Ole Miss players include guard Sean Pedulla (team-high 14.7 ppg, 3.7 rpg, team-high 32 steals), guard Jaylen Murray (13.2 ppg, 44.4 3PT%, team-high 55 assists), guard Matthew Murrell (11.7 ppg, 43.3 FG%, 22 steals) and forward Malik Dia (7.1 ppg, team-high 5.4 rpg, 8 blocks).

Georgia passed nearly every test they took in non-conference play, but there’s no denying the level of difficulty is set to ramp up. Saturday’s game at Ole Miss marks the first of seven straight games against ranked opponents, and how the Bulldogs play may show us how prepared they are for the weeks ahead.

The Georgia Bulldogs are set to kick off their SEC basketball season with a tough matchup against the Ole Miss Rebels on the road. The Bulldogs will be looking to start their conference play on the right foot as they face a challenging opponent in Ole Miss.

This game will be a crucial test for Georgia as they look to establish themselves as contenders in the SEC this season. Ole Miss is always a tough team to beat at home, so the Bulldogs will need to bring their A-game in order to come out on top.

Led by head coach Tom Crean, Georgia will look to rely on their talented roster to pull off a big road win. Players like Sahvir Wheeler, Toumani Camara, and K.D. Johnson will need to step up and make big plays in order to secure a victory.

The Bulldogs will need to focus on their defense and rebounding in order to contain Ole Miss’ potent offense. If they can execute their game plan and play with energy and intensity, Georgia has a good chance of coming away with a win.

It’s sure to be an exciting and intense matchup as Georgia basketball opens their SEC slate at Ole Miss. Fans can tune in to see if the Bulldogs can start their conference season off on the right foot and make a statement in the SEC.

  • Sonny Smart, father of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, passes away

Sonny Smart, father of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, passes away

NEW ORLEANS — Sonny Smart, the father of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart, passed away on Saturday, January 4 at 12:15 a.m.

The University of Georgia announced in a statement that Sonny Smart fell on New Year’s Eve and fractured his hip. Smart underwent hip surgery but complications arose. Smart was surrounded by his wife Sharon, and their three children: Karl, Kirby and Kendall.

“The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny,” per the statement.

Per the statement put out by Georgia, the family also asks for continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day. Sonny Smart’s fall was not related to the attack.

Smart often attends Georgia gamse in support of his son. Like Kirby Smart, Sonny Smart was a football coach, though Sonny Smart worked at the high school level coaching at Bainbridge High School from 1988-1994 and Rabun County High School from 1995-2003. During his time as a coach, including when he coached Kirby, Sonny Smart went 90-78-1.

Kirby Smart often spoke of his father and how much he helped shape his own coaching career.

“He’s taught me so much just about the way you handle things, the right way, the wrong way,” Smart said of his dad prior to the 2023 National Championship Game against TCU. “Control the controllables. The moment’s never too big if you’re prepared. And I always watched the way he prepared our teams and our staff in high school. He was a very wise man, a man of few words. I tried to follow his mantra as a coach. I’ve certainly evolved from going to coach for other people, but a lot of my core beliefs came from the way he ran our programs in high school.”

Georgia’s season came to an end on Thursday with a 23-10 loss to Notre Dame.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sonny Smart, the beloved father of Georgia head coach Kirby Smart. Sonny was not only a loving father and husband, but also a dedicated supporter of his son’s coaching career.

Throughout his life, Sonny instilled in Kirby the values of hard work, dedication, and perseverance, which have undoubtedly contributed to his success as a coach. Sonny’s influence can be seen in every game that Kirby coaches, as he always carries his father’s teachings with him on the sidelines.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smart family during this difficult time. Sonny will be deeply missed, but his legacy will continue to live on through his son’s coaching career. Rest in peace, Sonny Smart.

Sonny Smart passes away – UGASports: Georgia Bulldogs Football & Basketball Recruiting

Sonny Smart, the father of Georgia head football coach Kirby Smart, has passed away.

Per a release by UGA, the elder Smart passed away on January 4, 2025, at 12:15 a.m., surrounded by his wife, Sharon, and their three children: Karl, Kirby, and Kendall.

Sonny Smart fell while walking during the day on New Year’s Eve in New Orleans and fractured his hip. He was hospitalized and underwent hip surgery; unfortunately, complications arose. He fought valiantly but was unable to overcome his injuries.

His fall was not related to the early Wednesday morning terrorist attack where a man drove his truck down Bourbon Street, killing 15 people and injuring 35.

    The release read as follows:

“The Smart family expresses their heartfelt gratitude to the Ochsner hospital and medical staff for the exceptional care provided to Sonny Additionally, they ask for your continued prayers for those affected by the tragic events that occurred in the early hours of New Year’s Day. The Smart family treasures everyone’s thoughts and prayers and now prays for God’s comfort, strength, and guidance.”

A native of Columbia, Ala., Sonny Smart was a long-time high school head coach in Georgia, posting an overall record of 90-78-1. He coached at Bainbridge High from 1988-1994 and Rabun County High from 1995-2003.

Kirby Smart spoke of his father often.

“He’s taught me so much just about the way you handle things, the right way, the wrong way,” Kirby Smart reflected on his dad two years ago.

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Sonny Smart, beloved father of Georgia Bulldogs head football coach Kirby Smart. Sonny Smart was a dedicated father, husband, and supporter of the Bulldogs football program.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Smart family during this difficult time. Sonny Smart’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the impact he made on the Georgia Bulldogs community.

Rest in peace, Sonny Smart. You will be greatly missed. #GoDawgs

His national funeral will be held at the National Cathedral on January 9, which President Joe Biden marked as a national day of mourning and has called on U.S. citizens to assemble “in their respective places of worship” to pay homage to the former president.

Editorial: America – and Donald Trump – have much to learn from the life and service of Jimmy Carter

“The contrast between the peanut farmer and the mogul could not be more different as the US marks the passing of its most humble president – and braces for the return of its most divisive”

    The Independent31 December 2024 01:00

Carter’s presidency was marked by turmoil

Carter was full of ambition at the start of his presidency but beset with problems from the start.

The presidency was weighed down by multiple crises. In the 1970s, the economy struggled with a rare combination of simultaneous inflation and recession, an oil shortage sent gas prices soaring and the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, derailing negotiations for an important arms treaty.

Notably, in a struggle that lasted almost as long as his presidency, Carter fought over an energy program that was structured to make fuel expensive enough that consumers would be encouraged to conserve it.

The crisis required Carter to address the nation multiple times in 1979.

“In order to control energy price, production, and distribution, the Federal bureaucracy and red tape have become so complicated, it is almost unbelievable. Energy prices are high, and they’re going higher, no matter what we do,” he said in an April 1979 speech.

Jimmy Carter made eradicating Guinea worm disease a top mission

Noble Prize-winning peacemaker Jimmy Carter spent nearly four decades waging war to eliminate an ancient parasite plaguing the world’s poorest people.

Rarely fatal but searingly painful and debilitating, Guinea worm disease infects people who drink water tainted with larvae that grow inside the body into worms as much as 3-feet-long. The noodle-thin parasites then burrow their way out, breaking through the skin in burning blisters.

Carter made eradicating Guinea worm a top mission of The Carter Center, the nonprofit he and his wife, Rosalynn Carter, founded after leaving the White House. The former president rallied public health experts, billionaire donors, African heads of state and thousands of volunteer villagers to work toward eliminating a human disease for only the second time in history.

    AP 30 December 2024 23:00

Today, we mourn the loss of former President Jimmy Carter as his funeral procession begins in his native Georgia. The beloved 39th president of the United States has left behind a legacy of compassion, diplomacy, and service to others.

As the procession makes its way through the streets of Plains, Georgia, where Carter was born and raised, we remember his dedication to peace, human rights, and social justice. His commitment to serving others, both during his time in office and in his post-presidential years, has left a lasting impact on our nation and the world.

As we say goodbye to a true statesman, let us honor President Carter’s memory by continuing his work for a more just and peaceful world. Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones during this difficult time. Rest in peace, President Carter.

Five players are averaging double figures for Georgia, led by De’Shayne Montgomery at 16.0 points per game. Prior to entering the head coaching ranks, White spent seven seasons as an assistant for the Ole Miss program under head coaches Rod Barnes and Andy Kennedy. A graduate of Ole Miss himself, White was a four-year starter for the Rebels basketball team, helping them win two SEC West titles and a trio of NCAA Tournament berths. His 370 career assists rank as the seventh-most in school history, after leading the team in assists per game all four of his seasons on campus.

    “POLL” POSITION
In the latest top-25 polls released this past Monday, Ole Miss ranks No. 24 in the AP Poll and No. 23 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. Recently at No. 15 in the Coaches Poll on December 9, it was the highest ranking in a national poll since the Rebels were No. 14 in the AP Poll on January 4, 2010, and the highest position in the Coaches Poll since they sat in 15th on January 21 in 2008.

AP FLOUR, SUGAR, SALT, BUTTER, AND WATER
Ole Miss has dominated the turnover battle this year, ranking third in the nation with a turnover margin of +7.4 while ranking seventh in turnovers per game at 9.0. The Rebels are forcing an average of 16.4 turnovers per contest which ranks 18th in the NCAA. Ole Miss’ assist-to-turnover ratio of 1.82 also ranks among the nation’s best at 9th, led by Jaylen Murray with a season ratio of 3.24. They’ve been a force on the defensive end with an average of 10.2 steals per game (No. 14 in NCAA), paced by Sean Pedulla, who ranks No. 20 in steals per game nationally.

EASY TO HANDLE – A DIME BY THE DOZEN
Recording an assist-to-turnover ratio of 2.35 in his first season with Ole Miss, senior Jaylen Murray has taken his point guard play to an even higher level, beginning the 2024-25 year with 55 assists to just 17 turnovers. His assist-to-turnover ratio of 3.24 ranks 24th in the nation. “Juju” has registered five or more assists in seven games for the Rebels this season and ranks seventh in the SEC with 4.2 assists per game.

    9. 3.53, Todd Abernethy (431 assists, 122 games, 2004-07)
    10. 3.52, Deandre Burnett (225 assists, 64 games, 2016-18)

    I’LL TAKE THAT, PLEASE
Sean Pedulla has been a force for the Rebels on defense, forcing 32 steals for an average of 2.5 per game. The senior guard has collected a steal in 12 of 13 games to begin the 2024-25 season, grabbing multiple swipes in nine games this year with a season-best of five against Oral Roberts.

    A “DO-IT-ALL” SCHOOL
Ole Miss is one of just three schools in the nation that currently hold a spot in the AP Top 25 in football, men’s basketball, and women’s basketball, joined by Alabama and Tennessee. On the gridiron, the Rebels rank No. 16 while men’s hoops ranks No. 24 and the women No. 25.

    LET’S PLAY DEFENSE
A staple of success for head coach Chris Beard has always been his team’s defensive play, and it’s been evident on this year’s Ole Miss roster to start the season. With a turnover margin of +7.4, the Rebels own the third-best average in all of college basketball, forcing 16.4 per game (No. 18 in the NCAA) while committing just 9.0 to rank seventh in the NCAA.

They have held opponents to 60 points or less in four games this season, allowing an average of just 65.4 per contest, the 48th-fewest in the NCAA. Their field goal percentage defense of 41.1 ranks 88th in the country this season, and Ole Miss holds a record of 13-1 in two years under Beard when holding the opposition to under 40 percent from the field. Their scoring margin of +15.5 this season is the 36th-best figure in the country.

Ole Miss ranks among the top teams in the nation in steals per game at 10.2, the 14th-best clip in college basketball, and blocks per game at 5.0 to rank 35th.

    BATTLE TESTED
The future schedule for Ole Miss is one of the most difficult in the nation. As of January 2, they own the second-toughest remaining strength of schedule in the nation, according to ESPN’s Basketball Power Index. Their remaining opponent’s win percentage of 89.3 is the fourth-highest in all of college basketball.

    THE CHEF IS HOT
Guard Sean Pedulla has been dominant on both ends of the floor for Ole Miss as of late. Over the past six games, he is averaging 16.7 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 2.3 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game, shooting 48.5 percent from the floor.

    “HE A FREE THROW”
Through the first 13 games, Jaylen Murray has gone 26-29 from the free throw line for a percentage of 89.7. Entering the game with Purdue, Murray had not missed a shot from the charity stripe, and was one of six players in all of college basketball to remain perfect. The Bronx native also connected on his first two free throws during the Purdue game to extend his consecutive made shots at 32 dating back to the 2023-24 season, tying Murray with Stefan Moody for the second-longest streak in school history, trailing only David Rhodes’ 37 during 1972.

    I GOT ALL NUMBERS
The 2024-25 Ole Miss basketball roster boasts some serious career statistics. Seven players have scored over 1,000 points in their collegiate career, including Matthew Murrell (1,549), Sean Pedulla (1,421), Dre Davis (1,275), Jaemyn Brakefield (1,220), Jaylen Murray (1,167), Mikeal Brown-Jones (1,101), and Davon Barnes (1,012). The Rebels roster is one of two in the nation to feature seven players with over 1,000 career points (also Minnesota). Entering the season, the team possessed 8,735 career points, 3,062 rebounds, 1,346 assists, 596 steals, and 327 blocks.

    SEASONED VETERANS
Featuring 10 seniors on the roster, Ole Miss returned the fourth-highest minutes-per-game figure among all “power-five” programs in the nation at 284.3, and the most in the SEC. In total, Ole Miss players have played in nearly 1,000 career collegiate games with over 500 starts. The Rebels are one of 18 programs in the nation that feature five or more players in at least their fifth year of college basketball.

    PROGRAM POINT PRESIDENTS
Seniors Matthew Murrell and Jaemyn Brakefield have each surpassed the 1,000-point mark during their careers here in Oxford, and continue to climb the program leaderboard. Here’s a snapshot of where they lie among the career points list at Ole Miss:

    11. Gerald Glass – 1,564
    12. Don Kessinger – 1,553
    13. Matthew Murrell – 1,549
    14. Terence Davis – 1,512

    32. Rahim Lockhart – 1,160
    33. Ken Turner – 1,159
    34. Jaemyn Brakefield – 1,142
    35. Jack Marshall – 1,137

    IT STILL MEANS MORE
The gauntlet of the SEC got even tougher this season with the addition of Oklahoma and Texas to the conference for the 2024-25 academic year. With 10 teams currently owning a spot in the national top-25 polls, including Ole Miss, the schedule for the Rebels is littered with big games, especially at home in the SJB Pavilion. Between January 22 and February 4, Ole Miss will host No. 12 Texas A&M, No. 2 Auburn, Texas, and No. 10 Kentucky.

    NETWORKING
The 2024-25 NET Rankings made their debut on Monday, December 2 and Ole Miss has since climbed their way to No. 39 in the nation. Since the ranking’s first iteration at the conclusion of the 2018-19 season, their ranking of 21st on December 19 is the highest-ever NET Ranking for the Ole Miss program.

As of January 2, the entire SEC is ranked among the top 100, with 14 of the 16 programs sitting inside the top 50, seven in the top 25, and four in the top 10.

    RECORD BOOK WRECKER
Senior guard Matthew Murrell enters his fifth season with Ole Miss and continues to put his name up and down the program record book. The Memphis native currently ranks 13th in school history in career points with 1,549, and fifth in both three-point shots made (230), and three-point attempts (653). A consistent member of the lineup for each of his seasons, Murrell recently entered the top-10 in both career minutes and games played. He currently sits in seventh with 3,754 minutes, just behind Chris Warren with 3,812, and has played in 130 games, tying him for seventh with Breein Tyree and just behind four players with 132.

Murrell has his eyes set on entering the top-10 career lists in two other categories as well, on the verge in: Career field goal attempts (Murrell at 1,276, 10th is Carlos Clark at 1,297), and career steals (Murrell at 143, 10th is Rahim Lockhart at 148).
