  • A ghost is said to roam this railroad. A scientist has another idea.


    A decapitated train conductor is said to prowl a section of railroad in Maco Station, North Carolina, illuminating the tracks with a lantern.

    But this ghost is far from the only reported rail sighting in the U.S. “There’s a recurring theme. There are ghosts reported along railroad tracks holding lanterns,” U.S. Geological Survey seismologist Susan Hough told Mashable.

    While investigating the 1886 quake in Charleston, South Carolina — a potent 7.0 temblor that collapsed buildings and killed some 60 people — the legendary haunting of the nearby abandoned Summerville rail captured Hough’s attention. As the viral shaking in New York City in 2024 illustrated, earthquakes stoked by shifting faults do rattle the Eastern U.S. from time to time. Perhaps, thought Hough, the Summerville ghost’s lantern is actually a radiant earthquake phenomenon reported globally called “earthquake lights,” commonly described as balls of light or steady glows.

    “Maybe these ghosts are showing us where you have shallow, active faults in these [eastern] areas,” said Hough, who recently published a research article on the phenomenon in the journal Seismological Research Letters.

    While visiting the Charleston area, Hough dug up old book records from the 1950s and 1960s, which documented residents’ attempts to spy light from the Summerville ghost (the lantern was supposedly carried by an apparition waiting for her husband to return). One such account reported that, during a Summerville ghost outing, their car shook violently.

    “To a seismologist, that screams a shallow earthquake,” Hough said.

    Hough suggests that many of these sightings can be explained by quaking activity or earthquake faults. Summerville, after all, is thought to be the epicenter of the 1886 quake, and smaller 3.5 to 4.4 temblors hit there in 1959 and 1960. Even milder quakes, too small to be felt, but able to potentially produce earthquake lights, almost certainly affect the region, too.

    If the supernatural isn’t responsible for the radiance, how might quakes naturally create such brilliant lights?

    Hough thinks that most quake experts accept that earthquake lights do occur, though there’s still some skepticism. It’s unclear, however, what causes them — but there are compelling seismic ideas. In the case of the “railroad ghosts,” the process may begin with gases, like methane or radon, escaping to the surface through underground fractures in a shallow fault zone. Once on the surface, the gases can become trapped in water vapor and pool, igniting when they’re exposed to oxygen. Then, the trains come into play. Trains create static electricity on steel tracks; even abandoned lines or heaps of steel rail can create the static spark, ultimately producing the eerie light.

    Of course, not every railroad ghost is stoked by fault phenomena, Hough cautions. Sometimes, they’re headlight reflections from nearby highways. But many could be caused by faults. And Hough says this could be tested, for example, by purchasing radon kits and placing them where the lights are, or have been, reportedly seen. Scientists could also look for shallow faults in these areas.

    The Eastern U.S. certainly doesn’t have the robust quaking activity seen on the West Coast — as there are no well-defined faults or major earthquake zones like California’s infamous San Andreas Fault — but it’d behoove us to understand where these shallow faults are, and better grasp their risk.

    In 2011, a magnitude 5.8 earthquake hit near Mineral, Virginia, with significant shaking reaching some 80 miles away, to Washington, D.C. The temblor damaged the Washington National Cathedral and Washington Monument. Fortunately, no one was killed.

    But what if such a relatively rare quake hit much nearer to the nation’s capital?

    “If it was closer, it could have had a serious impact,” Hough said.

    The haunted-house thriller Presence has a formal conceit so clever, I’m surprised it hasn’t ever been done or attempted before. Maybe another movie has done it that I’m not aware of. This is a ghost story told entirely from the ghost’s point of view: We see what the ghost sees.

    The ghost cannot leave the house, and so the movie never leaves the house, either. You could say that the ghost is played by the director, Steven Soderbergh, who serves as his own cinematographer, as usual, working under the pseudonym of Peter Andrews. That’s Soderbergh holding the camera as it glides up and down the stairs, following the characters from room to room, and hovering over them as they try to figure out what’s going on.

    As the movie opens, Rebecca and Chris, played by Lucy Liu and Chris Sullivan, are about to move into a handsome Craftsman-style house with their two teenage children. The family dynamics are tense and a little on-the-nose: Rebecca, a high-strung type who works in finance, clearly favors their popular, jockish son, Tyler. Chris is the mellower spouse and parent, and he has a close bond with their daughter, Chloe, who’s quieter and more withdrawn.

    Even as we get to know this foursome, though, the movie’s most interesting and enigmatic character is the silent specter behind the camera. You keep asking yourself, who is this ghost, and what does it want? Is it the spirit of the house’s previous owner, or is it someone else entirely, who has some unspoken connection with the family?

    Before long, paranormal things start to happen. The ghost begins manifesting itself in physical ways, making the lights flicker and the walls rattle, or knocking a cup of juice to the floor. Initially, only Chloe, played by Callina Liang, seems to notice these strange phenomena, and she tries in vain to tell her parents and Tyler about what’s happening.

    Tyler, played by Eddy Maday, is a bit of a hothead. He has little patience with his sister’s anxieties, which, we soon learn, are tied to a recent tragedy involving one of her best friends. Presence isn’t just an unsettling ghost story; it’s one of the more incisive recent movies I’ve seen about the inner lives of teenagers, whether it’s their feelings of loneliness and disaffection or their vulnerability to high-school gossip and worse.

    Eventually, Chloe begins dating Ryan, a friend of Tyler’s, and there’s a voyeuristic queasiness to the way the camera — which is to say, the ghost — eavesdrops on their moments of intimacy. There’s nothing prurient about these moments; on the contrary, what you feel is the ghost’s enormous concern for Chloe.

    Soderbergh’s camera movements are so delicate and expressive, he can convey empathy with a mere twitch or shudder, or rage with a sudden, violent lurch. Before long, we realize that the ghost isn’t trying to scare this family; it’s trying to warn them.

    No American director is churning out independent movies as deftly and resourcefully as Steven Soderbergh. This is his latest collaboration with the veteran screenwriter David Koepp, whom he last worked with on the home-invasion thriller Kimi, which ingeniously reinvented Hitchcock’s Rear Window for the age of Alexa and COVID.

    Like Kimi, but in a completely different way, Presence makes brilliant use of spatial confinement and extracts maximal tension from a minimalist premise. As ever, Soderbergh seems to have approached this material as a technical challenge, a problem to be solved: How do you make a movie entirely from a ghost’s POV? Soderbergh has mentioned in interviews that he wore martial-arts slippers, so as to muffle his footsteps as he chased his actors around the house with his camera. I’m not usually big on behind-the-scenes documentaries, but Presence is one movie I’d make an exception for.

    But while Soderbergh may be flexing his technique, Presence never feels like a mere exercise. That’s mainly due to the fine actors, especially Liang as the sensitive, troubled Chloe and Sullivan as a loving family man trying to keep the peace in a frightening situation. Their performances are haunting in every sense of the word.

    GENESEE COUNTY — Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson and journalist Chris Hansen, formerly of the NBC program “To Catch a Predator” recently announced several arrests made by the Genesee Human Oppression Task Force (GHOST).

    In an announcement on social media, Swanson said four men came to Genesee County with the purpose of having sex with a minor. Two were illegal immigrants from Honduras, one was from Lapeer and the other from Utica.

    All four were arrested in a sting operation using online decoys to make the suspects think they were chatting with minors, when they were actually law enforcement.

    Swanson said one of the suspects chatted with the police for more than five hours, thinking it was a teenager.

    “This was pre-meditated,” said Hansen. “You saw the man show up to the location, a grocery store parking lot, we saw him drive around multiple times surveilling the house, chatting with the decoy, and finally he shows up after he thinks the coast is clear.”

    Of the four, Swanson said two of the suspects have families, spouses and children. Hansen called this the “collateral damage” in these types of cases because it affects loved ones of the suspect, who in most cases have no idea this behavior is going on.

    He said one individual has a newborn at home, in addition to other children and his wife, and he’s spending five hours chatting with what he thinks is a teenager about the entire event.

    “He thought he was smarter than us all,” Hansen said. “He thought he could talk his way out of it.”

    Swanson said one of the arrests was a 25-year-old student that was so deliberate and very specific on everything that he wanted to do.

    The man allegedly asked the decoy to call him ‘daddy’ and to say things that were “very, very vile,” he said.

    When Swnason asked Hansen what he made of this suspect, the journalist and television host called it, “very disturbing.”

    “When you see him walk in and he sees me, he goes white,” Hansen said. “He knows he’s been caught. He’s unprepared for it because he thought he did all this surveillance and asked the right questions. He thought he was going to fulfill this fantasy, but he was caught and he’s mad at me and your GHOST team because they interfered in this fulfillment of this fantasy.”

    Swanson said this is why GHOST does pre-emptive operations, so it’s GHOST on the other side of the door and not a real victim.

    He asked Hansen what his message to parents would be and the TV personality urged them to have a discussion with children to put them at ease about coming forward if something likes this happens online.

    Then he said parents should call Swanson’s office or any other law enforcement agency so they can make a record of whatever their child has experienced.

    “They will investigate,” Hansen said. “They will take it seriously.”

    Swanson added this message applies not only to children, but to anyone who is vulnerable.

    “We want to give you your voice and your freedom back,” he said. “If it’s not in Genesee County, then we can direct you to where you need to go. If you need help, you can come right here to the sheriff’s office or call 9-1-1.”

  • Chicago’s Mexican-American community Little Village now a ghost town


    Foot traffic has dropped significantly in Chicago’s predominantly Latino community, Little Village, also known as the “Mexico of the Midwest,” according to a Fox 32 Chicago report, as fears of deportation have heightened since President Donald Trump took office Monday. 

    “They have seen way less foot traffic, way less customers than they usually see,” Jennifer Aguilar, executive director of the Little Village Chamber of Commerce, said about the district to Fox 32. “Weekends are huge here in Little Village, and the amount of people that were out this weekend was significantly lower than usual.”

    Considered Chicago’s second-busiest retail corridor, Little Village spans two miles long and is lined with nearly 500 businesses, including stores, restaurants and nightlife venues in the southwestern part of the city.

    According to Michael Rodriguez, an alderman for the 22nd ward, which includes Little Village, the once-bustling community isn’t empty due to just the cold weather. Rodriquez said to the local station that people are in fear of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducting large raids in the Mexican-American neighborhood.

    “There’s definitely a lot of fear out there, and we think it has to do with some of this less activity in their neighborhood,” Rodriguez said. “The fear is palpable. The fear is vocalized by our residents. People in the streets are saying that they’re scared that ICE agents will show up at their doorsteps, at their workplaces, at their places of worship or places of going to school. They’re scared of that. That is a problem.”

    While ICE raids are possible under Trump’s new crackdown on illegal immigration, there have been no signs of deportation yet, according to Leo Pargo, a community activist who’s been patrolling the neighborhoods for signs of ICE activity.

    “We’ve been patrolling,” Pargo said to Fox 32. “We’ve been driving around Little Village, and through Pilsen, looking for any ICE agents or any potential raids that would be happening. So far, nothing.”

    According to the report, as workers and shoppers stay at home, Aguilar said the looming fears will economically impact the district that reportedly rakes in $900 million in annual revenue.

    “It makes it really difficult to stay afloat,” Aguilar said. “Especially right now when it’s just the beginning. It puts them in a state of worry, like what is it going to look like for the next four years?”

    “It hurts really anyone who lives here in Chicago who receives services from the city,” Aguilar continued.

    As a sanctuary city for migrants, Chicago is facing Trump head-on after the president pledged to tackle illegal immigration during his inaugural address Monday: “All illegal entry will immediately be halted, and we will begin the process of returning millions and millions of criminal aliens back to the places from which they came.” 

    On Tuesday, Trump’s designated border czar Tom Homan also said that ICE agents have already been deployed across the country to conduct operations.

    Despite the crackdown, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson vowed to oppose the president’s plans and assured that the city’s local law enforcement will not participate with federal immigration enforcement under the 2017 Illinois Trust Act. 

    “Chicago stands strong: regardless of the circumstances, our commitment to protecting and supporting this city remains unwavering,” Johnson wrote in a social media post on Sunday. “We will continue to fight for the justice and safety of all who call this place home.”

  • Steven Soderbergh figures out his ghost story


    Steven Soderbergh has never made a horror movie, and certainly not of the ghostly, haunted variety. His movies tend to be exacting, precise, so even when they’re frightening, as with the stalker nightmare Unsane or the chilling disease thriller Contagion, that fear comes from witnessing a process failing with just as much efficiency as when it succeeds. Death, as depicted in his new horror thriller Presence, has no such clarity of success and failure. The sense of loss left behind feels like a kind of failure, yet it is both inevitable and unknowable. These are some of the mysteries eating away at teenage Chloe (Callina Liang), who has just lost her best friend Nadia to a drug overdose and is now moving into a new house with her semi-functional family.

    Yes, it’s the old something-not-quite-right-with-this-house-that’s-supposed-to-solve-everything business: Chloe feels shivers of offness in her new home, which concerns her sweet-natured but frustrated father Chris (Chris Sullivan) and mostly annoys her jock brother Tyler (Eddy Maday)—who is the clear favorite of distracted mother Rebecca (Lucy Liu), further bedeviled by some vague but obviously Soderberghian financial malfeasance at work. As far as Rebecca is concerned, that’s the issue that should require discussion in hushed tones, not the creaks and chills of otherness that Chloe feels. Is it Nadia, Chloe wonders? Or just, as her parents assume, an expression of her grief and loneliness?

    The identity question may linger, but there’s no fake suspense over whether Chloe is imagining things. To depict this haunting, Soderbergh imposes a system onto a spiritual dimension where none should necessarily exist: He shoots the entire movie from the point of view of an unseen spirit that does indeed drift through the house; “presence” is also, essentially, the title character. It’s a Paranormal Activity movie turned inside-out: Rather than a largely stationary camera capturing flickers of spooky but eerily realistic movement in the frame, the camera remains mobile and hovering, its ghostliness an invisible but driving force. Like the Paranormal films, there is an element of surveillance: The camera travels through rooms unnoticed, overhearing bits of conversation and observing actions kept secret from other characters. It’s at once omniscient and deeply subjective. There’s also another technical challenge on hand for Soderbergh, who has professed far more affinity for the cut than the epically long take: to stay true to his POV gimmick, most scenes are staged in single unbroken shots. Cuts move forward in time, not within a scene.

    The simultaneous braininess and gimmickry of this technique, applied to a David Koepp screenplay that unapologetically eschews A Ghost Story-style metaphysical traversing, could have stranded Presence in a liminal zone between shlock and airless experiment. What Soderbergh winds up achieving is more reminiscent of his throwback crime pictures, like the Criss Cross remake The Underneath or more recent thrillers like the period noir No Sudden Move and the intensely Early 2020s Kimi. That is to say that Presence has the story, limited scope, and 85-minute runtime of a 1940s B-picture, infused—as those pictures often were, and as his crime movies usually are—with a disciplined style and contemporary electricity. It’s budget Gothic that’s worth every penny and then some.

    In that context, it’s less surprising that Soderbergh didn’t recruit anyone from his ever-growing unofficial rep company for this cast: No Matt Damon as the dad, no Catherine Zeta-Jones as the mom, no Riley Keough as a cool aunt dropping by. (Julia Fox, however, does have one scene as a real-estate agent. No word on whether she’s bumpin’ that.) The central quartet playing the family all does wonderful work, and in a movie with several talented young performers, frequent stage/TV/character actor Sullivan feels like the belated discovery as the flustered but loving father. The familial relationships that Soderbergh and Koepp set up aren’t necessarily wide-ranging or unpredictable, but as Presence ticks toward an inevitable confrontation, they’re surprisingly involving. There’s a circularity to Presence that is both entirely in keeping with a haunted-house story and, in this telling, even moving. It’s yet another genre that Soderbergh has worked like a problem, and produced an elegant solution.
