  • Josh Giddey Had Been a Player of Interest for the San Antonio Spurs

Nobody on the Chicago Bulls is safe during trade season!

While most rumors have centered around the availability of Zach LaVine and Nikola Vucevic, we have heard that Arturas Karnisovas is open to any and all business. There is really no other way to go about things when you sit 20-28 and on the cusp of a third straight Play-In Tournament appearance. The Bulls must get out of the middle and pave a new path toward legitimate competitiveness. This deadline is an opportunity to start laying the asphalt.

Does this mean we should expect a trade to get done that involves someone not named LaVine, Vucevic, or Lonzo Ball? Not necessarily. But it does mean we shouldn’t necessarily be shocked when any Bulls player appears in the rumor mill, including one of their newest additions.

In a recent article by The Stein Line’s Jake Fischer, Josh Giddey was named as someone the San Antonio Spurs have had on their radar.

“Another name that’s always lingered as a potential franchise point guard of Spurs interest: Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball. The Hornets have never welcomed trade inquiries for their eccentric ball handler. And yet the Spurs, sources said, have tried to register their interest in Ball during previous transaction cycles.

Chicago’s Josh Giddey has likewise been a young guard that San Antonio has envisioned possibly pairing with Wembanyama down the road.”

You can read Jake Fischer’s full intel piece and subscribe to The Stein Line newsletter here.

Spurs Have Thought About Josh Giddey

Let’s be very clear, we should not consider this an active trade rumor … yet. Fischer is not saying that the San Antonio Spurs have recently contacted the Bulls about a Josh Giddey trade or even plan to in the near future. He merely mentions the guard alongside several others as someone the franchise has thought about as an eventual target. These kinds of hypothetical talks go on behind the scenes all the time.

Regardless, hearing about any level of interest in a Bulls player right now is intriguing for all the reasons we talked about above. Nobody on the team is safe. With that in mind, would it hurt Karnisovas to give the Spurs a call? I’m assuming those conversations would be rebuffed with all the ongoing De’Aaron Fox reports. But it can never hurt to check in, right?

This also feels like somewhat significant news when we consider Giddey’s future. While the Spurs might not have an interest in trading for the guard, he is positioned to hit restricted free agency this upcoming summer. The Bulls chose not to extend Giddey after acquiring him with only one year left on his deal in a direct swap for Alex Caruso. So perhaps Fischer’s “down the road” comment relates to a potential pursuit of him this summer?

For what it’s worth, I could definitely envision a world where the Bulls allow the market to set Giddey’s price. His first season in Chicago has left a lot to be desired thus far, particularly when we consider his poor defense and around-the-rim efficiency. Likewise, Karnisovas has already been burned by his five-year, $90 million contract for Patrick Williams. Shouldn’t the goal be to avoid that happening again at all costs, particularly as you embark on a rebuild? There isn’t a lot of risk in allowing a player to hit the market when you have the right to match any offer sheet!

With the De’Aaron Fox stuff currently swirling, I think this is a rumor we can place in the back of the filing cabinet for now. However, if a deal doesn’t get done between the Spurs and Kings, this may be something worth discussing more as the offseason approaches. San Antonio needs a future facilitator to pair with big man Victor Wembanyama, and we all know Giddey is overflowing with playmaking upside.

Josh Giddey, the highly touted Australian prospect, has reportedly been on the radar of the San Antonio Spurs leading up to the 2021 NBA Draft. The 18-year-old guard has been turning heads with his impressive playmaking ability and basketball IQ, making him an intriguing option for the Spurs.

Giddey, who played for the Adelaide 36ers in the NBL, has drawn comparisons to NBA All-Star Ben Simmons for his size, passing skills, and versatility on the court. Standing at 6’8″, Giddey has the ability to play multiple positions and create mismatches for opposing defenses.

With the Spurs known for their player development and emphasis on team basketball, Giddey seems like a natural fit for the organization. His unselfish play and high basketball IQ align with the Spurs’ values, and he could potentially thrive under the guidance of head coach Gregg Popovich.

While it remains to be seen if the Spurs will ultimately select Giddey in the draft, it’s clear that he has caught their attention. With his combination of size, skill, and potential, Giddey could be a valuable addition to the Spurs’ young core as they look to build for the future. Stay tuned to see if Josh Giddey ends up in a Spurs jersey come draft night.

  • Josh Giddey Makes Bulls History vs Warriors

The Chicago Bulls broke a five-game losing streak by taking down the LA Clippers on the road on Monday and then looked to follow up their big win in another Californian matchup against the Golden State Warriors on Thursday.

The Bulls came out in Golden State on a mission, taking a three-point lead after the first quarter as they hunt for another upset.

Chicago has been fairly disappointing this season, sitting at 19-25 after 46 games, but has had some surprising bright spots. While star guard Zach LaVine has shocked many with his resurgence back to All-Star level play, 22-year-old guard Josh Giddey has been one of the biggest risers on the roster.

Giddey is averaging 11.4 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 6.7 assists per game this season, likely cementing himself as a cornerstone for the franchise going forward.

The Bulls acquired Giddey in a trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder over the offseason, and the young guard has already etched his name in the Chicago record books in his debut season.

Giddey recorded five rebounds in the first quarter of Thursday’s matchup in Golden State, his 12th quarter this season recording 5+ rebounds. Giddey has now set the Bulls single-season record by a guard for most quarters with 5+ rebounds.

  • Australia’s Giddey displays rare versatility in Chicago | FIBA Basketball

CHICAGO (USA) – Josh Giddey is one of four players to have 400 points, 250 rebounds, and 225 assists four months into the NBA campaign. That fact becomes even more impressive when you consider USA’s LeBron James (LA Lakers), Serbia’s Nikola Jokic (Denver) and Lithuania’s Domantas Sabonis (Sacramento) are the other three.

Elite company. A very positive note to end a very challenging year 2024 for the Boomer.

Josh Giddey’s future biography will devote a lot of pages to 2024 because it’s going to end up being a seminal year in his career.

Has the adversity encountered in 2024 signaled a downturn in fortunes for the Australian, or will it end up making him stronger? Giddey lost playing time with Oklahoma City and the Thunder, in June, traded him to the Chicago Bulls.

Then with Australia at arguably the most competitive Olympics of all time in France, Giddey and the Boomers fell after overtime to Serbia in the Quarter-Finals, ending their medal hopes.

Giddey had a big scoring game but also turned it over 7 times against Nikola Jokic and Serbia

Giddey, immediately after, teared up while speaking to Australian TV.

“We put ourselves in a great position to win that game (against Serbia) and we come up short like that in overtime,” he said to Australia TV Channel 9. “It’s heartbreaking.

“And it kills me that I have to wait four more years for another chance at this.

“But man, I’m so proud of this group. I love this team. Our coaches, our fans. They deserved a lot better than this.”

Giddey and Co led 90-89 with just over a minute left in overtime, yet Jokic scored to put Serbia on top to stay.

Australia fell in overtime to Serbia

“Every possession matters and it can go so quick,” Giddey said.

“We play four games and that’s it, you’ve got to wait four years…

“I just love this team, and I believed we had the group to go all the way… this feeling sucks and it’s going to hurt, but it’s going to build us.

“And we’ll be back in LA.”

Los Angeles is hosting the 2028 Olympics, yet there is a lot of basketball to be played before then.

Right now for Giddey, that basketball is in the NBA, where he is now a Chicago Bull.

Giddey has thrived in the Windy City. Despite playing less minutes, 27.9 per game, than in Oklahoma City, at least compared to his first two seasons when he averaged 31.5 and 31.1, respectively, his assists are up, 6.7 per game compared to 6.4 as a rookie, 6.2 in year two and 4.8 last year when his minutes were cut.

Things are going so well for Giddey in Chicago that he’s one of four players with LeBron, Jokic and Sabonis to have 400 points, 250 rebounds, and 225 assists four months into the campaign.

His 2.5 assists to turnover ratio is the best of his career. Giddey has a couple of triple doubles. On a negative note, Giddey has a career 3 technical fouls after picking up a combined four in his first three seasons. Then again, that may be an indicator of how badly he wants to win.

On the down side, Giddey’s team has a losing record. The Bulls had 18 wins and 23 defeats after their 110-94 setback to Atlanta on July 15, yet they are 10th in the Eastern Conference, which would put them in the play-in for the post-season. Giddey’s former team, Oklahoma City, is thundering away at 33-6, the best record in the Western Conference. Eastern Conference leaders Cleveland (34-5) had the best record in the NBA through July 15.

Overall, judging from the video (above) the Chicago Bulls recently put in social media, Giddey is adjusting well to his new surrounds.

Whether he remains depends on his performances for the club.

If Giddey is going to be an elite, top-level player in the NBA, he must get better and especially on defense.

After a December win over Milwaukee, when his defense led to an important turnover at the end of the game, Giddey said to the Athletic: “It’s something I’ve wanted to take pride in and put myself in those positions where I have to sit down and guard the ball. I’ve really tried to lock in on that side of the ball and make an emphasis of standing my ground and not being the weak link on that side of the ball.”

Giddey’s strengths are on offense but defense is where he’s focusing more now.

“Some guys are naturally gifted on that side of the ball,” he said. “Other guys, it requires a lot of effort, and I definitely fall into that category.”

With Australia, it’s not open to debate. Giddey is the man. He won the Wanda Rising Star Trophy at FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023.

Giddey was the best young player of the FIBA World Cup 2023

Last year at the Olympics, his 17.5 points and 6.0 assists per game were highest on the team, while his 29.4 minutes per game were second only to Pat Mills’ 30.9.

The good news for Giddey is that he won’t have to wait until 2028 to play for his country again. The Boomers will go for glory before then at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2027 in Qatar.

    FIBA

Australia’s rising star Josh Giddey has been turning heads in Chicago with his rare versatility on the basketball court. The 6’8″ guard has been showcasing his skills in the FIBA Basketball World Cup, impressing fans and scouts alike.

Giddey’s ability to play multiple positions and contribute in various ways has set him apart from his peers. His court vision, ball-handling, and scoring touch make him a dynamic threat on offense, while his size and length allow him to defend multiple positions effectively.

In a recent game against a tough opponent, Giddey put on a show, recording a triple-double and leading his team to victory. His performance drew comparisons to some of the NBA’s top stars, with analysts praising his basketball IQ and maturity on the court.

As Giddey continues to shine on the international stage, NBA teams are taking notice and considering him as a potential lottery pick in the upcoming draft. With his rare combination of skills and versatility, Giddey is poised to make a big impact at the next level and beyond.

Stay tuned for more updates on Australia’s Giddey and his impressive display of versatility in Chicago at the FIBA Basketball World Cup.

  • Bulls’ Josh Giddey ups his stock

LOS ANGELES — There wasn’t much on the list that Josh Giddey was going to dispute.

Maybe because he couldn’t dispute it.

Not that accountability has even been an issue since the point guard joined the Bulls last offseason.

But when informed Wednesday after the off-day practice at USC that coach Billy Donovan actually listed what Giddey needed to do in order to stay in the closing unit of close games, of course Giddey was all ears.

    Play better defense.

    “Yes,” Giddey said without hesitation.

    Take care of the ball.

    “Yep,” he said.

Creating shots for others, which Donovan remarked was stellar in the Monday victory against the Clippers.

    “Yeah, no doubt.”

Nothing he disagreed with and not one he thought was unfair. The goal for Giddey now? Make that list go away.

“Yeah, it’s important to every player to be out there, be in at that point of the game,” Giddey said. “I’ve got to find ways to make them make that decision. I feel like I’ve got to keep competing on the defensive side of the ball, and that would turn the conversation to, ‘Who do you want to go with down the stretch, who do you want to go with in this position?’ Competing defensively probably allowed me to be out there longer in those parts of the games, so everyone wants to be out there. I do. I want those minutes and it’s something I’m working through the last couple of weeks.”

That’s also why Giddey came out of the Clippers game feeling good about the performance. He checked a lot of those boxes and was rewarded with being on the floor at the end.

Far too often among the starters, Giddey has been the odd-man out — along with Patrick Williams at times — when it has come down to crunch time of a close game. An experience he never went through playing in Australia and didn’t experience much in Oklahoma City until last season’s playoff run.

That’s why hearing encouraging words from Donovan on the matter carried weight.

“He’s probably working towards that,” Donovan said, when asked if Giddey could see more time in the closing unit. “He’s given me a lot of confidence. The defense has ticked up, it’s gotten better there. And he’s gotten better at making the guys on the court better in terms of generating open looks for them.”

Donovan did warn that matchups still carried some weight in the decision process, but again, Giddey can help his cause by continuing to show he’s not a matchup problem that teams are looking to take advantage of.

Then there’s the bigger picture for Giddey in all of this. While the Bulls are clouded in trade rumors and no one is really safe, Giddey likely is staying put and in their plans. But at what price? He has the rest of the season to try to help set a better market for himself.

Giddey is a restricted free agent, so the Bulls can match any offer if they do allow him to test the market, but he would love nothing more than to make their minds up for them before it reaches that point.

“I’m very happy here,” Giddey said. “I love the players, the coaches, everyone has been great here. I’d be lying if I said I never think about it. Every player in the country thinks about it, but you can’t let it impact the way you play. It’s a business.

“The contract will be taken care of at the end of the year, whatever it is, how long it is, where it is? It’s kind of out of my hands by then, so just play the season and do my best.”

Being a closer is a good way to start.

The young Australian point guard, Josh Giddey, has been turning heads with his impressive performances for the Chicago Bulls.

Giddey, who was selected 6th overall in the 2021 NBA draft, has quickly become a key player for the Bulls, showcasing his playmaking abilities and basketball IQ on the court.

In a recent game against the Brooklyn Nets, Giddey put up a career-high 20 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds, leading the Bulls to a crucial victory. His stellar performance has not gone unnoticed, as many analysts and fans are now recognizing Giddey as a rising star in the league.

With his combination of size, skill, and basketball instincts, Giddey has the potential to become a cornerstone player for the Bulls in the coming years. Keep an eye on this young talent as he continues to up his stock in the NBA. #JoshGiddey #ChicagoBulls #NBArisingstar

  • Josh Giddey Expected to Play Despite Right Hip Soreness (1/17)

Josh Giddey is dealing with right hip soreness but is expected to take the court for the Chicago Bulls. The team has not indicated that his status will prevent him from playing in their upcoming game against the Charlotte Hornets on January 17, 2025.

    What It Means

Josh Giddey has been a consistent presence for the Bulls this season, playing in 36 games and missing only five. He averages 11.6 points per game, ranking fourth on the team and 32nd among shooting guards. His contributions extend beyond scoring, as he also averages 7.4 rebounds per game, placing him second on the team and second at his position. Additionally, Giddey’s playmaking skills are evident with an average of 6.8 assists per game, leading the team and ranking second among shooting guards. The Bulls have averaged 118.2 points per game when Giddey plays compared to 112.2 when he does not.

The Oklahoma City Thunder have announced that rookie guard Josh Giddey is expected to play in tonight’s game against the Toronto Raptors, despite dealing with right hip soreness.

Giddey, who has been a key contributor for the Thunder this season, has been listed as questionable leading up to tonight’s matchup. However, after participating in shootaround this morning and going through pregame warmups, it appears that he will be good to go.

The 19-year-old Australian has been impressive so far in his debut NBA season, averaging 11.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, and 6.1 assists per game. His playmaking ability and basketball IQ have been a bright spot for the young Thunder team, and fans will be relieved to see him on the court tonight.

It will be important for Giddey to take care of his hip and not push himself too hard, but his presence on the court will undoubtedly be a boost for Oklahoma City as they look to secure a win against the Raptors. Stay tuned for updates on his status throughout the game.

  • Bulls Notes: Giddey, Dosunmu, Trade Talks, Buzelis

Bulls Notes: Giddey, Dosunmu, Trade Talks, Buzelis

Josh Giddey returned to the lineup with a triple-double Saturday night as the Bulls got a much-needed win over Milwaukee, writes Darnell Mayberry of The Athletic. He missed the previous four games with a sprained right ankle that was originally feared to be much worse than it turned out to be. Giddey sparked the team with 23 points, 15 rebounds and 10 assists, but he preferred to talk about his improved defense.

“Taking more pride on that side of the ball is something I wanted to buy into probably 10, 12 games ago,” he said. “I met with (coach Billy Donovan), and we spoke about it in order to close games and be an impact. Even when offense isn’t going great, you’ve got to be locked in on that side of the ball. So, I really tried to hone in that side. It’s not going to be perfect. It won’t be for anybody, but I just made an emphasis to really be locked in on that side of the ball.”

Giddey realized he needed to upgrade his defense after a November 15 game in which the Cavaliers repeatedly targeted him on that end of the court, Mayberry adds. He responded to the experience with extra film study and a commitment to bring more effort to his defensive responsibilities.

“There’s only so much film you can watch,” he said. “It’s your will and your want to do it. I flipped that switch, and I want to do it now. It’s something I’ve wanted to take pride in and put myself in those positions where I have to sit down and guard the ball. I’ve really tried to lock in on that side of the ball and make an emphasis of standing my ground and not being the weak link on that side of the ball. You get to a point in your NBA career where you are who you are, and I didn’t want to be that way on the defensive side.”

    There’s more from Chicago:

    • Ayo Dosunmu will be reevaluated in 10 days after straining his lower right calf in a December 23 game, the Bulls announced (via Twitter). He sat out Thursday’s contest with a sore Achilles, and medical imaging on Friday revealed the cause of the pain, according to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times. “Let it calm down,” Donovan said. “No tears or anything like that, but certainly a strain showed up. With the way he plays, it’s probably in an area that will continue to cause problems unless he rests it. You’re always going to be susceptible to causing more problems. It was something that was caught earlier, which is a positive.” Cowley notes that Dosunmu was coming off his best stretch of the season, averaging 14.2 points and 6.4 assists in his last nine games.
    • The Bulls appear to be quiet in trade talks, as Donovan indicated that team vice president Arturas Karnisovas hasn’t contacted him about any serious proposals, Cowley adds in a separate story. “I think he’s always been respectful that we’ve got games coming, and we’re talking about the team, the roster, where we’re at now, how we get better, how we improve, those type of things,” Donovan said. “But there hasn’t been anything of substance of ‘Hey, this is where things are at.’”
    • Matas Buzelis may already be the Bulls’ best shot blocker, notes Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune. The rookie forward had two more blocks Saturday night and leads the team in that category even though he’s only ninth in minutes played.

In this post, we’ll be covering some recent news and updates surrounding the Chicago Bulls, including updates on draft prospects Josh Giddey and Ayo Dosunmu, trade talks, and the potential addition of Arnoldas Buzelis to the team.

    1. Josh Giddey: The Bulls have been linked to Australian guard Josh Giddey, who is considered one of the top prospects in the upcoming NBA draft. Giddey is a versatile playmaker who can handle the ball and facilitate offense, making him an intriguing fit for Chicago’s young core. The team is reportedly high on Giddey and could consider selecting him with their first-round pick.

    2. Ayo Dosunmu: Another draft prospect drawing interest from the Bulls is Illinois guard Ayo Dosunmu. Dosunmu had a standout college career and has the potential to be a valuable contributor at the NBA level. The Bulls are reportedly impressed with Dosunmu’s scoring ability and defensive prowess, and he could be a target for the team in the draft.

    3. Trade Talks: The Bulls have been active in trade talks leading up to the draft and offseason. Rumors have surfaced about potential deals involving key players such as Lauri Markkanen and Thaddeus Young, as the team looks to improve its roster and build around its young stars. Chicago could be a team to watch as the trade market heats up in the coming weeks.

    4. Arnoldas Buzelis: The Bulls are reportedly interested in adding Lithuanian forward Arnoldas Buzelis to their roster. Buzelis is a promising young prospect with size, skill, and potential to develop into a valuable contributor at the NBA level. Chicago could look to bring Buzelis aboard either through the draft or free agency, adding another talented player to their rotation.

Overall, the Bulls are making moves and exploring options to improve their roster and build towards a successful future. Stay tuned for more updates and developments as the offseason progresses.

  • Lonzo Ball Sends Message to Josh Giddey After Bulls-Bucks

Lonzo Ball Sends Message to Josh Giddey After Bulls-Bucks

While the Chicago Bulls are widely expected to sell at the NBA trade deadline, they have an impressive collection of victories this season. Despite being just 14-18, Chicago has wins over the Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics, New York Knicks, Memphis Grizzlies, and other solid teams.

Injuries certainly played a role in some of those games, but Chicago took care of business nonetheless. Defeating Milwaukee on Saturday night by final score of 116-111, the Bulls picked up another solid win.

It was Josh Giddey who led the way for Chicago in this game, finishing with a very impressive line of 23 points, 15 rebounds, and 10 assists.

Making an Instagram story post after the game, Bulls guard Lonzo Ball sent a message to Giddey.

Chicago showed a lot of faith in Giddey when trading Alex Caruso to the Oklahoma City Thunder for him this offseason. The former lottery pick has averaged 12.3 points, 7.0 assists, and 6.7 rebounds in 28 games for Chicago this season.

Giddey is one player certain to survive the NBA trade deadline, as he is seen as a longterm piece in Chicago.

As for Ball, he could be on the move before the trade deadline. The former second overall pick is averaging just 5.5 points, 3.5 assists, and 3.1 rebounds in 13 games this season, but has shown flashes of the two-way ability that made him such a high-level guard before the injuries.

In the wake of the Chicago Bulls’ thrilling victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Lonzo Ball took to social media to send a message to rookie sensation Josh Giddey.

In a post on Twitter, Ball praised Giddey for his impressive performance in the game, calling him a “future star in the making” and expressing his admiration for the young player’s skills on the court.

Ball’s message to Giddey further solidifies the camaraderie and respect that exists among NBA players, even in the heat of competition. It’s always great to see athletes supporting and encouraging each other, and this interaction between Ball and Giddey is a prime example of that.

As both players continue to make their mark in the league, it’s clear that they have bright futures ahead of them. And who knows, perhaps they’ll even face off against each other in a future matchup that will have fans on the edge of their seats. In the meantime, let’s continue to celebrate the sportsmanship and camaraderie that make the NBA such an exciting and inspiring league.

Josh Giddey has recorded his second triple-double for the Bulls after playing a pivotal role in a 116-111 win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Sunday at Chicago.

In what was Giddey’s first game back from an ankle injury, the Australian was involved from the very start on his way to a team-high 23 points to go with 15 rebounds, 10 assists, one steal and a block.

With it, Giddey became the first Bulls player to record multiple triple-doubles in a single season since Jimmy Butler in 2016-17, and the youngest with multiple since Michael Jordan.

Giddey was particularly physical in crashing the glass and fighting for rebounds and while he was putting his stamp on the game with his playmaking, as is usually the case, it was particularly pleasing to see him also making an impact on the defensive end.

That was especially true down the stretch as Giddey had two consecutive contests on Khris Middleton, forcing tough shots with the Bucks forward making one of two attempts.

“Josh has got length so just trying not to foul him and trying to make him shoot over him was what we hoped to,” Bulls coach Billy Donovan said of Giddey’s efforts on Middleton.

“He made a couple in the lane and he’s hard to handle because he’s got size and he can get it off but I thought Josh really competed and battled defensively.”

The execution wasn’t always perfect but the effort was certainly there from Giddey, who had a clutch, go-ahead 3-pointer in the final minute of the game and then backed it up with another strong defensive possession to help force a turnover that led to a Patrick Williams bucket on the other end.

That shot put Chicago up 111-108 inside the final 50 seconds before a Brook Lopez triple tied the game, but Coby White, who had 22 points in the win, put the Bulls back ahead 113-111 before Giddey hustled for another key defensive rebound to help seal the win.

The Bucks fouled Giddey, who made both free throws to extend the lead out to 115-111. Lopez then missed his next 3-point attempt and another Zach LaVine free throw was enough to see Chicago home.

It was particularly telling that Giddey was playing in the final minutes of the game, having previously not been trusted in clutch situations due to his issues on defence.

On Sunday, however, Giddey gave Donovan no choice but to play him and the Australian repaid the Bulls coach with a few big plays to secure the win.

“I’ve seen growth in that area and I’ve seen competitiveness in that area,” Donovan said of Giddey’s development on the defensive end.

“He’s got size, he’s got length and he’s got good feet. I think the biggest thing is how he can navigate screening actions and I think he fought through a lot. I thought he fought on post-ups.

“He’s capable but he’s got to do it consistently… when you point out things to him, he realises areas (he needs to improve). He enjoys watching film, he wants to find ways to get better. He’s been willing to grow in that area and I’ve seen significant progress.”

Giddey told Chicago Sports Network’s K.C. Johnson in his post-game interview that it was “good to be in there” late in the fourth quarter, adding that his previously injured ankle felt “great”.

“In this environment you guys (the crowd) were unbelievable and we feed off this energy. Not just myself but the rest of the guys that finished that game,” added Giddey.

“I thought we executed really well down the stretch. We were composed, we were poised and that’s a really good team. That’s an experienced team that has won a championship. They know how to close out games… that was a much-needed win.”

It was a huge result for the Bulls, coming off a 141-133 loss to the Hawks which saw them cough up 50 points in the fourth quarter. Back-to-back defeats of 21 and 25 points to the Bucks and Celtics preceded that result.

    ELSEWHERE…

The NBA has suspended Dallas Mavericks forward Naji Marshall for four games and Phoenix Suns centre Jusuf Nurkic for three games for their roles in an on-court brawl.

Dallas forward P.J. Washington copped a one-game and all of the suspensions handed down on Sunday are without pay.

Nurkic and Marshall came to blows and were ejected during the Mavericks’ 98-89 win at Footprint Center.

Things came to a head early in the third quarter when Nurkic was called for an offensive foul, sending the Mavericks’ Daniel Gafford to the floor inside the paint.

After a few moments, Nurkic and Marshall converged, with the former slapping Marshall on the noggin before Marshall punched his opponent up high.

P.J. Washington also shoved Nurkic in the middle of all this, sending him tumbling back near mid-court.

Officials then stepped in to prevent the teams from doing any further damage.

When all was said and done, all three players were ejected from the contest and Suns coach Mike Budenholzer was left unimpressed.

“I think that level of altercation is not good for our team,” he said after the game.

“It’s not good for anybody individually, it’s not good for our league.”

Mavericks coach Jason Kidd saw it a different way, saying he was happy with how his players protected themselves.

“They were protecting each other. That’s what that was,” Kidd said, according to the Dallas Morning News.

“Emotions can get high. For our guys to protect each other, we talk about it and it was displayed tonight.”

Suns rookie Ryan Dunn told reporters after the game that Nurkic and Marshall were talking with one another after the original offence foul before things got physical.

“I think it was just the heat of the moment, they were chipping back and forth,” Dunn said. “Heat of the moment we’re here for Nurk.”

Dunn clarified why he was in de-escalation mode and not trying to add to the fray.

“I’m a rookie, I don’t have enough money to be getting fined $5,000,” he said with a laugh. “I can’t throw a punch, but just trying to de-escalate it.”

    EMBIID COPS HUGE FINE

Philadelphia 76ers centre Joel Embiid was fined $120,000 AUD by the NBA on Friday for making “obscene gestures on the playing court” in the Sixers’ 118-114 victory over the Boston Celtics on Christmas Day.

The league said in a statement the incidents occurred in the first half of the 76ers’ victory in Boston, in which Embiid scored 27 points with nine rebounds.

Embiid celebrated a layup in the first half with the “DX crotch chop” thrusting gesture he has adopted from professional wrestling and been fined for in the past.

He had another gesture for Boston fans after a three-pointer shortly before halftime.

The 2023 NBA Most Valuable Player has appeared in just nine games this season because of injuries — the latest a sinus fracture that has him playing in a protective mask — and a three-game suspension for a physical altercation with a journalist.

Embiid had another injury scare before Wednesday’s game, falling over the security rope at the perimeter of the court during warm-ups and grabbing his right ankle.

He appeared untroubled during the game, but was listed as “questionable” for Saturday’s game against the Utah Jazz with the sinus fracture and a left foot sprain.

  • Defensively, Bulls guard Josh Giddey has gone from rock bottom to serviceable

Defensively, Bulls guard Josh Giddey has gone from rock bottom to serviceable

The pack always will look for the weak.

It will sniff them out, track them and strike time and time again.

It’s the law of the jungle. And, as Bulls guard Zach LaVine said, life in the NBA, where you’re either the hunter or the hunted.

Guess which of those Bulls guard Josh Giddey was? Put it this way: He wasn’t doing much hunting.

Giddey admitted as much in November, when he was pulled for his poor defense after the Cavaliers sought him out and went at him in a 144-126 victory against the Bulls.

‘‘Just didn’t guard well enough, myself right on top of that list — probably one, two and three on that list,’’ Giddey said afterward.

    It was his rock bottom.

Fast-forward to late in the Bulls’ 116-111 victory Saturday against the Bucks. Giddey was isolated against the Bucks’ Khris Middleton and pressured him into missing a potential tying jumper with 12 seconds left. He then grabbed the rebound and sealed the victory from the free-throw line.

That’s why when Giddey — who finished with a triple-double — was asked afterward whether he was more proud of his late offense or his late defense, he didn’t hesitate.

    ‘‘Definitely the defense,’’ he replied.

It has taken three-plus seasons — definitely way too long — but Giddey finally had an awakening.

‘‘I’d say that game in Cleveland was probably the turning point,’’ Giddey said. ‘‘I was like, ‘Damn, I’ve got to . . . ’ I mean, eventually as a player, the fork kind of gets pitched in the road where it’s kind of like, ‘I’ve played four years in the league, and you kind of start to become who you are.’ That game kind of played in my mind for a while, and I was like, ‘I’ve got to make a stand on that side of the ball.’

‘‘It’s the effort, and that’s not where it needed to be. It’s something I really wanted to take pride in. Some guys are naturally gifted on that side of the ball, and other guys require a lot of effort. I definitely fall into that category.’’

It not only took effort, but it also required a heart-to-heart with coach Billy Donovan and a lot of film study. And while Giddey isn’t about to make anyone forget about defensive ace Alex Caruso, the player the Bulls traded to acquire Giddey from the Thunder, his showing against the Bucks offered some optimism about his defense.

‘‘I’ve seen growth in that area, and I’ve seen more competitiveness in that area,’’ Donovan said of Giddey. ‘‘He’s got good size, good length, [good] feet. The biggest thing is how he can navigate screening actions and get over it. He’s capable, but he has to do it consistently.’’

Now, before anyone starts nominating Giddey for a spot on the All-Defensive team, it’s important to point out that he was in the situation he was Saturday because Middleton sought him out and because Ayo Dosunmu was sidelined with a calf injury.

The real test will come when the Bulls are fully healthy again. Will Donovan lean on Giddey defensively in that situation the next time? Giddey hopes so.

‘‘I watched video, but there’s only so much film you can watch,’’ Giddey said of his turnaround on defense. ‘‘It’s your will and your want to do it. I flipped that switch, and I want to do it now.

‘‘[I want to] make an emphasis of standing my ground and not being the weak link on that side of the ball.’’

In a recent turnaround, Bulls guard Josh Giddey has gone from rock bottom to a serviceable defensive player. Giddey, who struggled with his defensive skills earlier in his career, has put in the work and made significant improvements on that end of the court.

His commitment to improving his defense has not gone unnoticed by his coaches and teammates. Giddey’s effort and determination to become a better defender have paid off, as he is now considered a reliable option on that end of the court.

With his newfound defensive prowess, Giddey has become a valuable asset to the Bulls, providing solid defense and contributing to the team’s success. His transformation from rock bottom to serviceable on defense is a testament to his hard work and dedication to improving his game.

Fans and analysts alike are impressed by Giddey’s defensive improvement and are excited to see how he continues to grow and develop as a player. With his newfound defensive skills, Giddey is sure to make a significant impact on the Bulls’ success in the future.

  • Josh Giddey Set to Return After Four-Game Absence

Josh Giddey Set to Return After Four-Game Absence

The Chicago Bulls will welcome back their lead guard on Saturday night.

According to Billy Donovan, and confirmed by the official injury report, Josh Giddey will return to the floor against the Milwaukee Bucks. The 22-year-old missed the previous four games with an ankle sprain that he suffered against the Toronto Raptors on Dec. 16.

The Bulls sure feel like they dodged a bullet with Giddey’s prognosis. The initial injury, which he suffered while closing out on a shooter in the corner, looked pretty severe. Giddey was on the ground in clear pain before the medical staff had to help him back to the locker room. Nonetheless, he told reporters he was hoping to return after only a two-game absence, but the Bulls appeared to have a more cautious approach and sat him against Milwaukee and Atlanta earlier this week.

The question now is whether or not Giddey can pick up where he left off. The guard had played some of his best basketball before suffering the injury, averaging 12.1 points, 7.7 assists, and 6.7 rebounds on a much-improved 53.0 percent shooting in his previous 12 games. Even better, he was showing considerably more effort on the defensive side of the ball, recording 13 total steals in his last seven contests.

For both parties’ sake, let’s hope Giddey can continue to show strides in both his efficiency and defensive focus. His restricted free agency will be here sooner than we know it, and the Bulls need as many healthy games as possible to evaluate his future with the franchise.

Matas Buzelis and Lonzo Ball will also make their returns on Saturday night. Buzelis missed the Bulls’ previous game against the Hawks, while Ball had sat out the last two.

After missing the last four games due to a lower leg injury, Oklahoma City Thunder rookie Josh Giddey is set to make his return to the court. The 19-year-old Australian sensation has been turning heads in his debut season, averaging 11.9 points, 6.3 rebounds, and 6.8 assists per game.

Giddey’s absence has been felt by the Thunder, who have gone 1-3 in his absence. His playmaking ability and basketball IQ have been sorely missed, but his return is sure to provide a much-needed boost to the team.

Fans and analysts alike are eager to see Giddey back in action and continue his impressive rookie campaign. Stay tuned for his return and see how he can help lead the Thunder to victory.
