  • Australian Open LIVE: Jannik Sinner v Marcos Giron, Emma Raducanu loses to Iga Swiatek – scores, order of play & radio

‘I love tennis so much I gotta play three sets’published at 07:31 Greenwich Mean Time

    Navarro 6-4 3-6 6-4 Jabeur

American eighth seed Emma Navarro joked she “can’t resist” going the distance in her matches after winning her third consecutive three-set encounter at Melbourne Park.

The 23-year-old beat former Wimbledon and US Open finalist Ons Jabeur 6-4 3-6 6-4 to reach the fourth round.

Since the start of 2024, Navarro has played 32 matches that have gone the full three sets, winning 23 of them.

“I love three sets. I love tennis so much I can’t resist, I gotta play three sets,” Navarro said.

Navarro is the daughter of billionaire businessman Ben Navarro, founder of the Sherman Financial Group, and credited her dad for her stamina, saying he would take her and her siblings on six-hour bike rides as youngsters.

“We made up a term: biking and crying,” Navarro said.

“I learned a lot of toughness growing up. A lot of thanks goes to him.”

    Feels harsh, actually.

Sonego – Marozsan: 18.01.2025 Time TBA
    H2H: first meeting

Lorenzo Sonego has won three of his last five matches. Last week in Auckland, he reached the second round, losing against Michelsen in tight straight sets. Here in the Australian Open, he defeated Wawrinka in four tight sets. It was a high-quality match, with both players playing aggressively throughout. Yesterday, in the second round, he upset Fonseca in five tight sets. Last year in Melbourne, Sonego reached the second round of the Australian Open, losing against Alcaraz in four tight sets.

Fabian Marozsan has won four of his last five matches. In the opening round of the Australian Open, he defeated Seyboth Wild in five tight sets after spending four hours on the court. Yesterday, in the second round, He upset Tiafoe in five sets. He was 1-2 down but kept his hopes alive. Marozsan saved several breakpoints in the fourth set and successfully turned the match around. Last year in Melbourne, He lost in the third round against Fritz in four sets.

    Best Bet to Make

According to the bookies, this will be a 50-50 match, and we agree. Both players played and served well in the opening matches. We expect them to hold their service games easily. If they do so, we expect another marathon match with possible tiebreaks.

That being said, over games is a value bet.

Value bet/ the best odds: over 40.5 games @1.83 @bet365

Sinner – Giron: 18.01.2025 Time TBA
    H2H: 1-0

Jannik Sinner has won 19 straight matches. In the Australian Open, Sinner defeated Jarry in straight sets, as we predicted. His last loss was in October in Beijing, losing against Alcaraz in the final. Yesterday, in the second round, Sinner defeated Schoolkate in four sets. Surprisingly, he lost the first set 4-6. However, he reduced his unforced errors and successfully turned the match around. Jannik is the defending champion in the Australian Open. Last year, Sinner defeated Medvedev in five sets after being 0-2 down. According to the bookies, Jannik is the biggest favorite to win the title in Melbourne.

Marcos Giron has won four of his last five matches. Last week in Adelaide, Giron reached the quarterfinals, losing against Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. In the opening Australian Open round, Giron defeated Hanfmann in four tight sets after losing the first set 2-6. Yesterday, in the second round, Marcos defeated Etcheverry in five sets. This time, Marcos spent over four hours on the court. Last year in Melbourne, Giron lost in the opening round against Draper in five sets.

    Best Bet to Make

According to the bookies, Sinner is the big favorite in this matchup, and we agree. Giron has no weapons for Janik’s game. Jannik is the best player in the world right now and has 19 consecutive wins. We expect him to dominate from the very start until the end.

That being said, Sinner covering the games handicap is a value bet.

Giron on Sinner: ‘He pretty much doesn’t have any holes’

American reflects on his late-career surge

The Australian Open is widely known as the Happy Slam. That has not historically been the case for Marcos Giron.

The jovial American, who lost in the first round of his first five appearances at the season’s first major, faced Alexander Zverev, Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medvedev in three straight editions of the event.

When the draw for the tournament was made this year, Giron was on court at the Adelaide International facing eventual champion Felix Auger-Aliassime. After losing that match, Giron went to the cool-down area at the ATP 250 and after finishing up, he asked coach Nicolas Meister who his first-round opponent would be.

This time, Giron drew Yannick Hanfmann rather than a player who has been in the Top 2 of the PIF ATP Rankings like was the case on three previous occasions in Melbourne. The 31-year-old has taken full advantage, advancing to the third round at a major for just the third time.

“It’s tough. You have to play whoever you play. But it definitely helps when you don’t have to play a top-five guy in the world. It was nice,” Giron told ATPTour.com. “Having played top-five guys several times here in Australia, I was relieved to not have to deal with that.”

    It All Adds Up

Giron will need to take down defending champion and top seed Jannik Sinner to make the fourth round at a Slam for the first time. But the World No. 46 is alright with that.

“Playing Rafa on centre court here was pretty special. I’ve had some rough draws here in the past,” Giron told ATPTour.com. “It’s nice to have earned myself a chance to play the number one player in the world on centre court. I’m excited for that.”

The pair’s lone Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting came 15 months ago at the Rolex Shanghai Masters, where Sinner was victorious in straight sets.

“He hits his serves big. His forehand is big. His backhand is big. He moves well. He’s got good hands. He competes every single point from start to finish, and he returns great,” Giron said. “He pretty much almost doesn’t have any holes, he’s got weapons and he’s confident. It’s a hell of a challenge. There were very few guys last year that were able to beat him. It is pretty amazing what he’s been doing and how, and the level he’s sustained.”

How do you prepare for such a big challenge? Giron, like the rest of the world, has seen plenty of Sinner

“You have to scout the opponent. I played him once before… It was different conditions,” Giron said. “I think it’s a mix of trying to expose the couple of things that he maybe doesn’t do well, and then also play my game and play to the best level.

“I’m going to have to be aggressive. I’m going to have to take chances. But I’m going to have to play within myself, and have to do it for a very long time in order to have a chance.”

Giron’s mother, sister and niece were supposed to travel to Australia, but his niece, who is just more than one-year-old, got sick, cancelling the trip. However, Giron is thankful that his family in California is safe given the wildfires that have caused severe damage to families and properties.

“It’s really sad to see that this fire has done so much damage to L.A. Having friends that live there, having been to homes that are there, and for it to all be gone is crazy. It’s sad to see,” Giron said. “It’s motivating for me to play here, being able to do this while so many people are suffering. It sucks to see. Hopefully they’ll be able to take care of it quickly.”

Less than a year ago, Giron won his first ATP Tour title in Newport. He reached a career-high PIF ATP Ranking of No. 37 in August and is continuing to break new ground here in Melbourne.

“It’s really cool. As an athlete, you always wonder, ‘How can I keep pushing myself? Can I keep improving?’” Giron said. “If you don’t, you’re not going to keep succeeding. There are 100 guys that are the Top 100 in the world. If you don’t keep improving and keep building, somebody’s going to take your spot.

“I feel like I’ve done a good job of motivating myself, keeping pushing. I still physically feel good. I’ve got good energy. I move well still. Fortunately, no injuries really. I just try and keep playing.”

In a recent interview, American tennis player Marcos Giron had high praise for rising star Jannik Sinner, stating that the young Italian “pretty much doesn’t have any holes” in his game.

Giron, who recently faced off against Sinner in a tough match, was impressed by the 19-year-old’s skill and composure on the court. He noted that Sinner’s all-around game, from his powerful serves to his precise groundstrokes, makes him a formidable opponent for any player.

Sinner has been making waves in the tennis world with his rapid rise up the rankings and impressive performances against top players. Giron’s comments only add to the growing hype surrounding the young talent.

As Sinner continues to make a name for himself on the ATP Tour, it’s clear that his opponents are taking notice of his talents. With players like Giron singing his praises, it’s only a matter of time before Sinner becomes a major force in the tennis world.
