  • Opinion | Beyoncé Is America. Give Her the Grammy.

But its achievement can’t be corralled into a single musical genre. It’s an album-length paean to a panoply of traditions, from folk to roots to country to rock to hip-hop, that together make American music great. It’s an album full of gospel and guns, car rides and cowboys, whiskey, weed and wine; of Jesus, money, furious fights between lovers, and the gentleness and wisdom of wily elders. The 27 tracks on “Cowboy Carter” are packed with musical quotes, jokes and dead serious historical reckonings, featuring a diversity of cultures all bringing their stories, religions, melodies, spirits, ancestors and rituals together for one big dance.

The musical references that Beyoncé employs are wide-ranging and eclectic. Different listeners will hear different echoes, based on their own personal tastes. To my ear, “Ameriican Requiem,” the album’s first track, first evokes the gospel standard “Down To The River To Pray.” But I also hear echoes of The Who’s “Tommy,” Lead Belly’s “Looky Looky Yonder” and, wait, is that a nod I hear to Buffalo Springfield’s 60’s protest anthem, “For What It’s Worth”? With a dash of Nina Simone’s “Mississippi Goddam,” all in one song?

To truly understand the project of “Cowboy Carter,” it helps to start with the guitar. This instrument was carried to the American West by various paths, including by Mexican vaqueros. The guitar became a mainstay in cowboy music — you can’t fit a piano on a horse.

As the folklorist Alan Lomax writes in “Folk Songs of North America,” the “Texas cowboys adopted the Mexican vaquero’s costume, acquired his savvy of cattle and horses, and stole his herds.” The music of European-descended cowboys was influenced by vaqueros, and Black cowboys put their own twist on these American guitar stylings.

Many freedmen, post-slavery, learned the cattle trade and became rodeo riders. Huddie Ledbetter — better known as Lead Belly — stands as one of America’s greatest cowboy singers, and Lead Belly’s catalog now all but defines classic rock; “No Lead Belly, no Beatles,” as George Harrison once memorably declared. Faithful renditions of Lead Belly’s arrangements have been covered by artists as disparate as Creedence Clearwater Revival, Led Zeppelin and Nirvana, to name a few. His stylings have roots in country guitar, but he transported the sound to something that roamed far away from the cowboy ranch — all the way to the tracks on “Cowboy Carter.”

Opinion | Beyoncé Is America. Give Her the Grammy.

In a year filled with uncertainty and unrest, Beyoncé has stood out as a beacon of hope and inspiration. From her powerful music to her impactful activism, she has consistently used her platform to advocate for change and uplift marginalized voices.

Beyoncé’s visual album, “Black Is King,” was a stunning celebration of Black culture and history. It showcased the beauty and resilience of the Black community in a way that was both empowering and enlightening. The album not only showcased Beyoncé’s incredible talent as an artist, but also her commitment to using her platform to amplify important issues.

It’s clear that Beyoncé is more than just a singer or performer – she is a symbol of America itself. Her music reflects the diversity and vibrancy of our country, and her activism speaks to the values of equality and justice that we hold dear.

That’s why Beyoncé deserves to win the Grammy for Album of the Year. Her impact goes beyond just music – she is a cultural icon who represents the best of what America has to offer. Let’s honor her contributions and celebrate her excellence by giving her the recognition she deserves. Beyoncé is America, and she deserves the Grammy.

  • Rick Pitino urges Kentucky fans to give John Calipari ‘a huge standing ovation’

Rick Pitino knows how John Calipari might feel when the former Kentucky coach returns to Lexington on Saturday as Arkansas visits the 12th-ranked Wildcats.

Pitino’s first visit there — and many after — was hostile in part because he returned as the coach of Louisville, Kentucky’s greatest rival.

But Pitino, who was accused of using an offensive gesture toward the crowd after a game at Rupp Arena in 2015, said he hopes Kentucky’s fans will show grace to Calipari, whose tenure ended last season after three consecutive first-weekend exits in the NCAA tournament before he accepted the Arkansas job.

“So he’s coming back on Saturday, and I want all of you to show the great class that you have: 23,000-plus people giving him a huge standing ovation,” Pitino, now the coach at St. John’s, said in a video posted Thursday to social media. “Show him what respect and admiration is all about. I know you have the class. I’ve always believed in you. Do it once again.”

Calipari was the king of the one-and-done era at Kentucky. From 2011 to 2015, he led the program to four Final Four appearances in five seasons, a run that included the 2012 national championship.

But Calipari’s time at Kentucky ended with a turbulent stretch and losses to double-digit seeds Saint Peter’s and Oakland in 2022 and 2024, respectively, in the NCAA tournament.

Earlier this week, Calipari said the return could come with different emotions.

“Walking in that arena, storied arena, and walking in the wrong door, the other door,” Calipari said during his weekly radio show before Saturday’s game. “Seeing my friends the night before. Having my friends — dear friends, lifelong friends — but they’re Kentucky fans. Their whole life they’ve been Kentucky fans.

“I just hope they’re neutral, but they are Kentucky fans. We gave our heart and soul. [My wife] was like a mother to those kids. So yes, there is going to be some emotion.”

If anyone knows how Calipari feels, it’s Pitino, who went from beloved coach to enemy in the eyes of Kentucky’s fans after leading the Wildcats to the 1996 national title only to leave a year later for the Boston Celtics.

Pitino said he hopes Kentucky fans will remember the good things Calipari did during his time there.

“Toughest day of my coaching career at Louisville was when I had to walk into Rupp Arena,” he said in the video. “I tried not to show it, but the reception — it tore me up apart, because I loved that place so much.

“As you all know, I’m not best friends with John Calipari. I respect him certainly, but it was a mutual thing. The fans wanted a change. John read the tea leaves. He needed a change. And he really didn’t want to leave. But what did he do for you? He brought the best talent in the history of the game of any university in America to Lexington. He also won a national championship. His style of play was extremely entertaining.”

In a surprising turn of events, former University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino is urging Kentucky fans to show support for current Wildcats head coach John Calipari. In a recent interview, Pitino expressed his admiration for Calipari’s success at Kentucky and urged fans to give him “a huge standing ovation” when he returns to Rupp Arena.

Pitino, who coached at Kentucky from 1989 to 1997 before moving on to Louisville, has had a tumultuous relationship with the Wildcats fan base in recent years. However, he seems to have put aside any past grievances and is now calling for unity among the Kentucky faithful.

Calipari, who has led the Wildcats to numerous NCAA tournament appearances and a national championship in 2012, has faced criticism from some fans in recent years for not winning more titles. Pitino’s endorsement could help mend the relationship between Calipari and some skeptical supporters.

It remains to be seen how Kentucky fans will respond to Pitino’s plea, but one thing is for certain: the basketball world will be watching as Calipari returns to Rupp Arena and awaits his reception from the Big Blue faithful.

  • ‘I don’t give a f–k’

Amber Rose doesn’t “give a f–k” that she was “canceled” over her unwavering support for President Donald Trump as she opened up about the backlash she faced.

The model, 41, said her right-leaning stance cost her many fans during last year’s presidential election, but added that the “naysayers are quiet” now that Trump is back in the White House.

“During the election, I was ‘canceled,’” she told Maxim. “Now? All the naysayers are quiet. They see he’s already changing our country for the better.”

Rose, who shares kids with Wiz Khalifa and Alexander “AE” Edwards, respectively, said society needs to focus on “reality” and having “difficult conversations to bring us all back to a better place.”

“Unfortunately, the ‘woke’ left cancels people for having a different ideology,” Rose told the outlet.

“Fortunately for me, I don’t give a f–k and will always stand 10 toes down until the wheels fall off, regardless of what my beliefs may be.”

The reality TV star admitted she had left-leaning political opinions in previous years.

“I used to be on the left and thought I was doing the right thing,” she explained. “That’s why it’s so important to have open conversations.”

“On the left, there’s no objective truth. It’s only about feelings,” she said. “As a society, we all need to get back to reality and have these difficult conversations to bring us all back to a better place.”

Elsewhere, the mom of two hinted at a potential move into the political arena.

“Maybe. I still have a lot to learn, but I’m definitely in love with it,” she said, without ruling out joining the Trump administration.

For now, Rose revealed that she’s got a new project in the works.

“I’m excited to announce my new show. It’ll be my opinion on politics and other current events.”

Rose has made her affinity for politics known more than ever in the past year.

In July 2024, the model graced the stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, where she spoke about her political conversion and how she started to support Trump.

The primetime speech happened just two days after an assassination attempt against Trump at a rally in Butler, Penn.

The model detailed in her speech how her father challenged her to research the former president’s statements and policies after “the left told me to hate Trump.”

In July 2024, the model graced the stage at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee. Getty Images

“My message to you tonight comes from a humble place. The left told me to hate Trump and even worse, to hate the other side, the people who support him,” she said during her speech.

“When you cut through the lies, you realize the truth. American families were better when Donald Trump was president. We were safer, wealthier, and stronger.”

    I don’t give a f–k

In a world where it feels like everyone is constantly judging, criticizing, and expecting you to conform to their standards, sometimes you just have to say it loud and clear: I don’t give a f–k.

I don’t give a f–k about what anyone thinks of me. I don’t give a f–k about societal expectations or norms. I don’t give a f–k about fitting in or trying to please everyone around me.

I am unapologetically myself, and if that offends you or makes you uncomfortable, that’s your problem, not mine. I will not water myself down or dim my light to make others feel more at ease.

I will speak my truth, live my life authentically, and pursue my passions without apology. I will not be held back by fear of judgment or rejection.

So if you don’t like it, you can kindly f–k off. I am here to live boldly, fiercely, and without restraint. And I don’t give a f–k what anyone else thinks about it.

  • A shale boom is not Donald Trump’s gift to give

Unlock the White House Watch newsletter for free

Cutting red tape, unleashing, debottlenecking — these are all great business-friendly policies. They work wonders on industries previously fettered by regulation. But there is little evidence that this has been the case for US fossil fuels. That suggests President Donald Trump’s efforts to expedite oil and gas projects will deliver a trickle, not a flood.

Oil producers have been “drill, baby, drilling” for quite some time. In 2024, US oil production averaged 13.2mn barrels a day, making it the largest oil producer in the world. That’s two-and-a-half times what the country was producing in 2008. The supply of US gas, too, has roughly doubled during that period.

Line chart of Oil production (mn b/d) showing US producers have been drilling at full speed

True, this breakneck pace cannot continue forever. The industry will add an extra 270,000 barrels a day on average in 2025 and 2026, according to consultancy Argus Media, roughly a quarter of what it squeezed out in 2023. But that largely reflects the fact that a lot of the best acreage has already been exploited.

Trumpian policies, like encouraging drilling in US coastal waters, will open up new territories. Even if they contain exploitable resources, though, the time it takes to develop a project extends beyond the length of a single four-year presidential term. This is no short-term fix.

Unfortunately for Trump, what inhibits the flow of oil is not red tape, but low prices. Producing oil from US shale formations is relatively expensive. Companies need prices to be somewhere between $60 and $80 a barrel if they want to cover all their costs and pay dividends, estimates Christopher Wheaton at Stifel.

Shale is also highly sensitive to commodity price moves because, unlike traditional projects in which much of the cost is sunk upfront, maintaining shale output requires constant spending. By way of example, the record low price for US natural gas in 2024 has already caused production to nudge lower.

That rather limits Trump’s room for manoeuvre, at least with oil. Gas may be a bit more responsive, given there is some hope that strong demand, not least from data centres, and the resumption of LNG export permitting might raise domestic prices. That would help producers justify more supply.

As it stands, the oil market is hardly undersupplied. A spluttering China translates into weak demand. Opec+, which wants to see prices stay high, is sufficiently worried that it is actively holding back supply. That means that any increase in US oil production is likely to push down prices and thus be shortlived. The only thing gushing in the oil patch is rhetoric.

    camilla.palladino@ft.com

The recent increase in shale oil and gas production in the United States has been touted as a major success of the Trump administration’s energy policies. However, it is important to recognize that this shale boom is not solely the result of Donald Trump’s actions, and it is not his gift to give.

The shale boom has been driven by a combination of technological advancements, market forces, and the hard work of countless individuals in the energy industry. Hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking,” has revolutionized the extraction of oil and gas from shale formations, making previously inaccessible reserves economically viable.

Furthermore, the shale boom is a result of private sector investment and innovation, not government intervention. While the Trump administration has rolled back regulations and opened up federal lands for drilling, the majority of shale development has occurred on private lands and was already well underway before Trump took office.

It is important to recognize that the shale boom is not a gift from any one individual or administration. It is the result of a complex interplay of factors that have come together to create a thriving industry. While Trump may claim credit for the increase in shale production, it is important to remember that this boom is not his to give – it is a product of the hard work and ingenuity of the American energy sector.

Pro-life activist prosecuted by Biden DOJ reacts to Trump pardon: ‘I want to give him a hug’

FIRST ON FOX: When Joan Bell, 76, was given the news she was one of the pro-life activists pardoned by President Donald Trump Thursday afternoon, she was in disbelief.

“I didn’t know if that meant we would get out in a few weeks or a few months, or what. I didn’t really know, but I knew we got pardoned,” Bell, a grandmother of eight, told Fox News Digital Friday. “Well, then I ran upstairs because I had a rosary every evening.”

After finishing her prayers and Bible study with other inmates, Bell, a lifelong pro-life advocate, was told by several other inmates that her husband, Christopher Bell, was on Laura Ingraham’s Fox News show saying she was indeed one of the 23 others pardoned.

PRO-LIFE PROTESTERS COULD FACE UP TO 10 YEARS IN PRISON: ‘POLITICAL WITCH HUNT’

President Donald Trump pardoned 23 pro-life activists Thursday.   (Getty/Christopher Bell)

“That was overwhelmingly beautiful,” Bell recalled. “Everyone was clapping.” She was then told by a guard to pack up her things for her release later that evening.

“We are so grateful to Trump. And to just feel the fresh air, God’s beautiful air, just wonderful,” Bell said. “Just being out and being with my husband, my son, just glorious. There are no words to describe that kind of freedom.”

She added that she and her husband will take a “second honeymoon” soon.

Bell, who lives in New Jersey, was sentenced to more than two years in prison in November 2023 for participating in a “blockade,” conspiring with other activists at a Washington D.C. abortion clinic in October 2020, according to President Biden’s Department of Justice (DOJ).

Prosecutors from the DOJ’s Civil Rights Division and U.S. attorney’s office for the District of Columbia argued the pro-life activists violated the 1994 FACE Act, a federal law that prohibits physical force, threats of force or intentionally damaging property to prevent someone from obtaining or providing abortion services.

The activists were sentenced by Judge Colleen Kollar-Kotelly of the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, a Clinton appointee, and immediately detained.

While signing the pardons Thursday, just a day before Friday’s annual March for Life rally, Trump said, “They should not have been prosecuted.”

PRO-LIFE PROTESTERS PARDONED BY TRUMP, FOX CONFIRMS

“Many, many of them are elderly people,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this. They’ll be very happy.”

Bell, along with Paula Paulette Harlow, Jean Marshall and John Hinshaw, were all around 70 years old when they were imprisoned.

“That he personally knew our case is so touching,” Bell said of Trump. “I want to give him a hug.”

Attorneys from the Thomas More Society formally requested pardons from the Trump administration earlier this month for the 21 pro-life advocates the law firm was representing.

“The heroic peaceful pro-lifers unjustly imprisoned by Biden’s Justice Department will now be freed and able to return home to their families, eat a family meal and enjoy the freedom that should have never been taken from them in the first place,” Steve Crampton, senior counsel of the Thomas More Society, said in a statement.

“These heroic peaceful pro-lifers were treated shamefully by Biden’s DOJ, with many of them branded felons and losing many rights that we take for granted as American citizens.”

In a previous interview with Fox News Digital, Crampton said it was hard to find a “fair jury” and that most of the jurors were either Planned Parenthood donors or pro-choice advocates in the cases. He called Washington, D.C., the “most pro-abortion city in America.”

“She can say her pro-death words, but we weren’t allowed to say pro-life words,” Bell said of the judge in the trial. Nonetheless, she said it was more “heartbreaking” to be prosecuted for her religious beliefs.

This week, Trump also took action to pardon over 1,000 Jan. 6 rioters who were imprisoned, along with numerous other executive orders related to immigration and cryptocurrency and orders to declassify the MLK and JFK files.

Pro-life activist prosecuted by Biden DOJ reacts to Trump pardon: ‘I want to give him a hug’

In a shocking turn of events, a pro-life activist who was prosecuted by the Biden Department of Justice for his beliefs has been pardoned by former President Donald Trump. The activist, who wishes to remain anonymous, expressed his gratitude and relief at the news of his pardon.

“I want to give President Trump a hug,” the activist said in a statement. “I am so grateful for his support and for standing up for the rights of the unborn. This pardon is a beacon of hope for all pro-life activists who have been unfairly targeted by the current administration.”

The activist went on to criticize the Biden DOJ for what he called a “witch hunt” against pro-life individuals. “It is truly disheartening to see the lengths to which the Biden administration will go to silence those who speak out for the most vulnerable in our society,” he said.

He also thanked his supporters for standing by him throughout the legal ordeal. “I could not have gotten through this without the unwavering support of my friends, family, and fellow pro-life advocates. I am grateful beyond words for their prayers and encouragement.”

The activist’s case has sparked outrage among pro-life groups, who see it as an attack on their First Amendment rights. Many are hopeful that Trump’s pardon will signal a shift in the treatment of pro-life activists under the new administration.

As for the activist himself, he is looking forward to putting this chapter behind him and continuing his work in defense of the unborn. “I will not be silenced,” he declared. “I will continue to fight for the rights of the voiceless, no matter the obstacles in my path.”

  • Pro-life activist prosecuted by Biden DOJ reacts to Trump pardon: ‘I want to give him a hug’

“Many, many of them are elderly people,” Trump said in the Oval Office. “They should not have been prosecuted. This is a great honor to sign this. They’ll be very happy.”

As we age, it’s important to prioritize our bone health and overall strength to prevent falls and maintain our independence. In this illustrated guide, we will cover some basic at-home workouts designed specifically for seniors to improve posture, strengthen bone density, and fight osteoporosis.

    1. Standing calf raises: Stand with your feet hip-width apart and slowly raise up onto your toes, then lower back down. This exercise helps strengthen your calf muscles and improve balance.

    2. Wall sits: Stand with your back against a wall and lower down into a seated position, as if you were sitting in an invisible chair. Hold this position for 30 seconds to 1 minute to strengthen your quadriceps and improve lower body strength.

    3. Hip abductions: Sit in a chair with your feet flat on the floor and slowly lift one leg out to the side, then lower it back down. This exercise helps strengthen the muscles around your hips and improve stability.

    4. Seated leg extensions: Sit in a chair with your back straight and slowly extend one leg out in front of you, then lower it back down. This exercise helps strengthen your quadriceps and improve knee stability.

    5. Bridge pose: Lie on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the floor, then slowly lift your hips up towards the ceiling. Hold this position for a few seconds before lowering back down. This exercise helps strengthen your glutes and lower back muscles.

Remember to always consult with your doctor before starting any new exercise routine, especially if you have any pre-existing health conditions. By incorporating these simple exercises into your daily routine, you can improve your balance, strengthen your bones, and reduce your risk of falling as you age. Give yourself the gift of strength and independence – your future self will thank you for it.
