  • 3 reasons the Lakers should give Bronny James some playing time

For obvious reasons, Bronny James is the most famous player in the NBA that hasn’t actually done anything yet as a professional basketball player. That’s what happens when you’re the son of arguably the greatest player of all-time. Bronny’s time in college was limited by a heart condition, and everyone knew when he was drafted by the Los Angeles Lakers this summer that he was a project that would need time to develop. There’s plenty of time for him to make his mark, but he’s understandably not there yet.

Bronny has been scrutinized just because of his famous family tree, but to his credit, he seems to be a good dude that just wants to make his own name for himself in basketball. Bronny has bounced back and forth between the G League and the NBA, and though he hasn’t yet had the chance to show his stuff in any meaningful way with his dad’s team yet, his play in the G League showed that he’s more than just a nepo baby.

It’s been a really difficult week for the Lakers and everyone else in Los Angeles as they’ve dealt with the devastating wildfires that have swept the area. Head coach JJ Redick lost his home in the blaze, and he’s said that he wants the Lakers to be able “to bring joy” to the community with their play, but it’s been understandably tough to balance the fear and grief of the week with the ability to go out and perform at a high level.

L.A. has lost three straight games and has had two others postponed. This is a team in need of a shake-up, and crazy though it may sound, Bronny could provide that. Here are three reasons the Lakers should start giving him some playing time.

Bronny has missed the last seven South Bay Lakers games because he’s been on the NBA roster, and in that time he’s played a grand total of three minutes for L.A. That doesn’t help him develop, and it’s especially egregious since he was showing real signs of growth before getting called up.

Just as a Major League Baseball team will let a prospect stay in the minors to get at-bats every day rather than let him languish on the big league bench behind an established veteran, the Lakers need to do right by Bronny. If he’s going to stay in the NBA, that’s fine, but JJ Redick needs to get him some time on the court, even if it’s for just a few minutes each half.

Like anything else, basketball is a game that rewards players who learn from their mistakes. Bronny’s been far from perfect in the G League, but he has shown real potentia. How else will he improve his shooting or learn to limit his turnovers if he’s not on the court? Use it or lose it, Lakers.

Bronny is just a second-round rookie, and those players don’t tend to get many NBA minutes right out of the gate, if ever. Gabe Vincent is a six-year veteran, so what’s the excuse to be giving him more than 20 minutes per game when he’s doing so little to help the team?

Vincent has done nothing to prove that the Lakers were smart to sign him to a three-year deal last year. His three-point shooting is barely over 30 percent, his overall field goal percentage is a ghastly 36.8, and he’s not an impact guy on defense.

The Lakers can’t profess to be chasing a championship and still give someone like Vincent real minutes. He is what he is at this point of his career, but maybe Bronny could blossom into a useful role player if he’s only given the chance.

The Lakers don’t want to admit that Vincent’s three-year, $33 milion contract is a sunk cost. Like it or not though, that ship has sailed. It would actually be surprising if Rob Pelinka didn’t include him in a trade deadline deal. Until then, give Bronny some run.

Pelinka has already traded for Dorian Finney-Smith and Shake Milton, and as we just said, he may not be done making moves. He still has over three weeks to make another trade, but there’s one asset the Lakers are set to acquire that won’t even cost them anything, because Jarred Vanderbilt is set to make his season debut soon.

The addition of Finney-Smith was a big blow to Bronny’s chances of getting meaningful playing time, as he’s the actualized version of what the Lakers hope Bronny will eventually become: a 3-and-D wing that helps the team on both ends of the court. Once Vanderbilt comes back, the situation will be even more dire for Bronny.

Vanderbilt is a defensive difference-maker, which is something the Lakers and their bottom-third D badly need. Redick said that his return is “imminent” on Sunday, but that he wouldn’t rejoin the team this week. He’ll likely need some time to ramp up to major minutes, but it sure sounds like he’ll make his debut next week.

That doesn’t give Bronny much time to crack the rotation. If he’s lucky, Vanderbilt won’t be back by time the Lakers face the NBA-worst Wizards on Tuesday. If there’s ever a time to see what Bronny can do, that’s it.

    1. Development: Giving Bronny James playing time on the court with the Lakers will help him continue to develop his skills and gain valuable experience at the professional level. This hands-on experience will be crucial in his growth as a basketball player and will allow him to learn from some of the best in the game.
    2. Marketing: Bronny James is a highly popular and marketable player, with a large following on social media and a strong presence in the basketball community. By giving him playing time with the Lakers, the team can capitalize on his popularity and attract even more fans to their games. This could also lead to increased merchandise sales and revenue for the organization.
    3. Legacy: LeBron James is one of the greatest players in NBA history, and giving his son playing time with the Lakers would be a fitting way to continue his legacy. It would be a special moment for fans to see father and son share the court together, and it would create a unique and memorable experience for both the James family and Lakers fans alike. This move could also help solidify LeBron’s legacy in the league and further cement his status as one of the all-time greats.

  • Snap’s stock has been stuck in a rut. Could a TikTok ban give it a boost?

Speculation over “where users will go after TikTok” has been mounting for weeks, as the uncertainty of a TikTok shutdown looms large. After the Supreme Court upheld its ban in a unanimous 9-0 decision announced this morning, the fate of the app seems likely to fall to incoming President Donald Trump, who told CNN he’ll “be making the decision.”

In the background, rival social-media companies have been working hard to make sure they are well positioned in the public’s conscience should TikTok’s 170 million American users suddenly have more free time — and among them is the embattled Snapchat, which launched a new ad campaign Wednesday to court creators.

    Stuck in a rut

Snap’s push to cash in on TikTok’s exit comes as the company grapples with stagnating growth in the US and a stock price that’s been in the doldrums for more than 2.5 years.

    Snapchat stockSnapchat stock

    Sherwood News

Snap’s stock has been jumping up and down on every story, rumor, or whisper about TikTok’s fate: its shares dipped more than 5% yesterday after reports surfaced that the ban could be delayed.

    Global appeal

According to a Variety report this week, Snapchat’s US downloads hit a record low in December, down 17% from the previous year. Indeed, more than half of Snap’s daily active users now hail from outside of North America and Europe.

Snap users by regionSnap users by region

    Sherwood News

While the growing total user base sounds promising, here’s the catch: rest-of-world users aren’t as valuable. In the latest quarter, Snap made just $1.09 per user in these regions, roughly one-eighth of the $8.54 earned per user in North America. In short, rest-of-world users aren’t as helpful in getting the company, which has posted consecutive net losses in all but one quarter since 2015, out of the red.

In a bid to invigorate its advertising sales, which make up more than 95% of its revenue, Snap recently launched two new ad formats in September. Then came December’s big play: a monetization program letting eligible creators earn ad revenue from their content on Spotlight, Snap’s TikTok-style short videos — where viewership shot up 25% year over year that month. If TikTok is banned, Snap execs will hope the Spotlight falls on them.

Snap Inc., the parent company of popular social media app Snapchat, has been experiencing a stagnant stock price in recent months. Despite the company’s efforts to innovate and attract new users, investors have remained wary of Snap’s ability to compete with larger tech giants like Facebook and Instagram.

However, a potential ban on the Chinese-owned social media app TikTok in the United States could provide a much-needed boost to Snap’s stock. With over 100 million monthly active users in the US, TikTok has quickly become a major player in the social media space, posing a threat to other platforms like Snapchat.

If TikTok were to be banned in the US, Snap could potentially see a influx of new users looking for a similar platform to fill the void left by TikTok. This could lead to increased engagement and advertising revenue for Snap, ultimately driving up its stock price.

While nothing is certain in the volatile world of tech stocks, a TikTok ban could be just the catalyst Snap needs to break out of its rut and regain investor confidence. Only time will tell if Snap can capitalize on this opportunity and turn things around for the company.

  • Lakers may give second chance to $28.4 million Jazz guard via trade

A Los Angeles Lakers player reunion could come to fruition in the next few weeks.

An electric Utah Jazz bench scorer who spent the first four seasons of his career with the Lakers may return to Los Angeles in a surprise deal.

“The Los Angeles Lakers have less than a month to make significant changes to their roster,” Sports Illustrated’s Ricardo Sandoval wrote Tuesday.

“The Feb. 6 NBA trade deadline is slowly approaching, and the Lakers are expected to be at the forefront of things. Los Angeles has been linked to many players on the market, some of whom have been their former players.”

“The Lakers have lost many of the great players they once had on their roster, and this trade proposal sees them reunite with one of their former players, current Utah Jazz guard Jordan Clarkson.”

“This trade idea (Gabe Vincent, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a 2025 second-round pick to the Jazz for Clarkson) sees Clarkson return to Los Angeles in exchange for two guards and a draft pick.”

“The 32-year-old guard has evolved into a reliable scorer and veteran presence. This season, he’s averaging 16.0 points per game, shooting 41 percent from the field and 34 percent from the three-point range.”

“While Clarkson is currently sidelined with a torn plantar fascia in his left foot, he has two years, including this one, left on his deal, and his proven scoring ability makes him an appealing option for the Lakers.”

The Jazz will continue to lose games with their current roster, but Clarkson has been an underrated offensive weapon for the struggling 10-28 ball club.

As a fearless isolation scorer who won’t hesitate to launch difficult jumpers on the move, Clarkson has arguably been Utah’s second-unit MVP.

However, dating back to his Los Angeles days, the Missouri product hasn’t prioritized scoring efficiently, one of the most concerning flaws an NBA player can possess.

Still, with the Lakers feeling pressured to make another meaningful trade, Clarkson could soon receive a call from Rob Pelinka.

More NBA: Lakers predicted to complete blockbuster trade for $146 million Heat superstar

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly considering giving a second chance to Utah Jazz guard, Mike Conley, who is earning $28.4 million this season. According to sources, the Lakers are exploring the possibility of acquiring Conley via trade in order to bolster their backcourt and add another veteran presence to their roster.

Conley, who has been a consistent performer throughout his career, could provide valuable leadership and playmaking skills to the Lakers, who are looking to make a deep playoff run this season. Despite his hefty salary, Conley’s experience and skillset could make him a valuable addition to the team.

While nothing is set in stone yet, the Lakers are said to be in talks with the Jazz about a potential trade for Conley. If the deal goes through, it could be a game-changer for the Lakers and significantly improve their chances of competing for a championship this season.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

Actor Kim Min-hee is reportedly expecting a child with South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo, with whom she has reportedly been in a relationship for nine years, according to local media reports Friday.

Entertainment outlet Dispatch revealed that Kim is expected to give birth this spring. She reportedly learned of the pregnancy last summer and is said to be some six months along.

Kim and Hong reside together in Hanam, Gyeonggi Province. Hong moved out of his marital home in Seoul’s Gangnam district and established a residence in Hanam, where Kim’s parents live.

Born in 1982, Kim is 22 years younger than Hong. The two met while working on Hong’s 2015 film “Right Now, Wrong Then,” which marked the beginning of their romantic relationship. They publicly confirmed their romance in 2017.

Hong was married in 1985 and has one daughter. He filed for divorce in 2016, but the court rejected the case in 2019, citing that the breakdown of the marriage was primarily his fault. The court stated, “Our legal precedent does not permit divorce claims from the at-fault party.”

Hong and Kim have lived together for nine years.

Kim Min-hee, the talented South Korean actress, is reportedly expecting to give birth to Hong Sang-soo’s child in spring. The news has sparked excitement among fans of the couple, who have been dating for several years.

Hong Sang-soo, a renowned filmmaker known for his unique storytelling style, has been in a relationship with Kim Min-hee since they worked together on the film “Right Now, Wrong Then” in 2015. The couple’s relationship has been the subject of much media attention, as Hong was previously married when he began dating Kim.

Despite the controversy surrounding their relationship, Kim and Hong have remained strong and committed to each other. The news of Kim’s pregnancy has only solidified their bond and fans are eagerly awaiting the arrival of their child in the spring.

Congratulations to Kim Min-hee and Hong Sang-soo on this exciting new chapter in their lives! We wish them all the best as they prepare to welcome their bundle of joy.

  • Cowboys cut RB Ezekiel Elliott to give him chance at playoffs

Cowboys cut RB Ezekiel Elliott to give him chance at playoffs

FRISCO, Texas — Ezekiel Elliott‘s return to the Dallas Cowboys is over with one game left to play.

The team waived its No. 3 all-time rushing leader Tuesday, marking the second time the Cowboys have released Elliott in three years. He was released after the 2022 season for salary cap reasons and spent 2023 with the New England Patriots.

The Cowboys made the move now to give Elliott, 29, a chance to join a playoff contender if he clears waivers.

“Out of respect and appreciation for Zeke and wanting to provide him with an opportunity to pursue any potential playoff participation possible, we are releasing him from the Cowboys roster today,” Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said in a statement. “As I have said many times previously, Zeke’s impact as one of the greatest to ever play with the Star on their helmet will never change and is etched in our record books and history forever. We thank him, love him and wish him the absolute best.”

Elliott’s agent, Rocky Arceneaux, thanked Jones “for affording Zeke this unique opportunity in granting us our release.”

“Even though nothing is imminent Zeke is excited about the possibilities and is grateful. He’s got a lot of good football left in him, and will remain a Dallas Cowboy for life,” he said in a statement released to multiple media outlets.

After the 2024 draft, Elliott signed a one-year deal worth up to $3 million if he had met incentives based on reaching 1,100 scrimmage yards, 10 touchdowns and 51% of playing time, plus the Cowboys making the playoffs.

Elliott has 74 carries for 226 yards and three touchdowns on the season. He has caught 12 passes for 69 yards.

Elliott did not top the 40 yards he had in the season opener against the Cleveland Browns. He has not had a run longer than 11 yards this season. He was deactivated for the Nov. 3 game at the Atlanta Falcons for missing meetings, according to multiple sources. His future with the team came into question after that game, but he remained on the 53-man roster.

Coach Mike McCarthy recently said Elliott has been a consummate teammate and supported Rico Dowdle, who has become the lead back and topped 1,000 yards on the season last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Elliott has been active for every game since the penalty, but he has topped 14 snaps just once in the past eight games. In the Week 16 win against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Elliott scored on a 1-yard touchdown run, giving him 71 in his career as a Cowboy. Only Hall of Famers Tony Dorsett (72) and Emmitt Smith (153) have more in franchise history.

From 2016 to 2022 with the Cowboys, Elliott ran for 8,262 yards. The three-time Pro Bowl selection set team rookie records with 1,631 yards and posted 30 100-yard games in his time with the Cowboys. He led the NFL in rushing in 2016 and 2018 but has not topped 1,000 yards since 2020 (1,002).

In fact, Elliott’s production has dropped every season he has played.

Behind Dowdle, the Cowboys now have Deuce Vaughn on the active roster with Dalvin Cook and Malik Davis on the practice squad.

The Dallas Cowboys have made a shocking move by cutting star running back Ezekiel Elliott in order to give him a chance at making the playoffs with another team.

Despite Elliott’s impressive performances in recent seasons, the Cowboys have struggled to secure a playoff spot, prompting the team to make this bold decision.

By releasing Elliott, the Cowboys are hoping that he will be picked up by a playoff contender who can utilize his talents and give him a chance to compete for a championship.

While this move may come as a surprise to many fans, the Cowboys believe it is the best decision for both the team and Elliott in order to give him a shot at reaching the postseason.

It will be interesting to see where Elliott lands and how he performs in his new team’s quest for the playoffs. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Dodgers give up on former top-100 prospect with latest surprising DFA

Dodgers give up on former top-100 prospect with latest surprising DFA

The Dodgers crept up on at least four other teams (Mariners, Angels, Padres, and Cubs) on Friday when they signed free agent and former KBO infielder/utilityman Hye-seong Kim to a three-year, $12.5 million deal just a few hours before his window to sign closed. LA hadn’t made their interest in him public up to that point, but they did get a good look at Kim during their trip to Seoul last March when they played his former team, the Kiwoom Heroes, in an exhibition match.

Kim’s contract also includes a two-year option for 2028 and 2029, which would allow him to make up to $22 million. It’s likely that his signing closes the door on a potential reunion with Kiké Hernández, and it might also threaten Gavin Lux’s future, though the Dodgers are still standing by him at second base and planning to use Kim as a superutilityman (for now, at least).

With the clock ticking down to finalizing a deal and the Dodgers’ 40-man full, they had to make quick decision on who to cut. Michael Grove might’ve seemed like the easiest option, as a guy who’s never been able to make it work in the majors, but no — they designated former No. 1 prospect Diego Cartaya for assignment to make room for Kim.

Dodgers make Hye-seong Kim signing official, designate former top-100 prospect Diego Cartaya for assignment

Cartaya was LA’s top prospect and No. 14 in all of baseball as recently as 2023. However, hopes quickly diminished after a pretty terrible year in Double-A, when he batted .189 with a .657 OPS and was sent to the Development List at the end of August. He dropped down to No. 16 in 2024 and was out of MLB’s top-100 altogether by 2024.

He continued to struggle at Double-A but was promoted to Triple-A anyway, and he finished the season with a .221 average and .686 OPS. His future in the majors, at least with the Dodgers, looked grim, especially given Dalton Rushing’s ascendency and LA’s decision to go to Hunter Feduccia as their backup-backup catcher in the majors.

That might be the only potential silver lining for him: he might have a better shot at getting to the majors elsewhere. It seems likely he’ll be claimed off of waivers by someone who remembers how highly-touted he used to be, but it’s a stunning reflection of how disenchanted the Dodgers have become with him.

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made a surprising move by designating former top-100 prospect for assignment. This decision comes as a shock to many fans and analysts who had high hopes for the young player.

The prospect, who was once considered one of the top prospects in the Dodgers’ farm system, has struggled to live up to expectations in recent years. Despite showing flashes of potential, he has been unable to consistently perform at a high level and has been passed on the depth chart by other younger, more promising players.

The decision to DFA the prospect is a clear sign that the Dodgers have given up on him and are ready to move on to other options. It is a tough break for the player, who had dreams of making an impact at the major league level with the Dodgers.

While it is always disappointing to see a young player fail to reach their potential, the Dodgers are a team with high expectations and cannot afford to wait around for a player who may never pan out. It will be interesting to see what the future holds for the former top prospect and if he can find success with another team in the future.
