  • Suns’ Devin Booker channels Forrest Gump in Nike ad, has a shoe giveaway across Phoenix


    Run, Book, run!

    Phoenix Suns star Devin Booker released his new Nike Book 1s “Forrest Gump” shoe edition on Friday. In the shoe’s commercial released on his Instagram story Friday, Booker did an amusing voiceover emulating the 1994 Academy Award-winning film’s lovable protagonist Gump and his memorable Southern drawl.

    “It turned out good, huh?” Booker said when he was asked about the voiceover during the Suns’ shootaround Saturday.

    This is the second official Nike ad for his shoe. The Book 1s’ first TV ad was in April 2024.

    The low-cut ‘Forrest Gump’ shoe colorway is inspired by the Nike Cortez model’s white and red colorway originally released in 1972. Those are one of nearly 20 different Book 1 shoe colorways since the first pair came out in February last year.

    The ad re-enacted multiple scenes with Booker’s face seamlessly blended over the face of Tom Hanks, who played Gump in the original film. One of the scenes shows Booker being given a pair of his shoes by the film’s fictitious wife “Jenny,” played by actor Robin Wright.

    The ad closes with Booker dressed up in Gump’s long beard and tattered Bubba Gump shirt — with a mob of people following him on his cross-country run that ended on the landmark Highway 163 in Monument Valley, Arizona.

    His teammate Royce O’Neale called the ad spot “hilarious,” and fans raved about it on social media. However, O’Neale made a flippant dig at Booker saying “he got some work to do” regarding his voice-acting skills.

    “It was funny,” Booker said. “It was a great reaction, too. Everything turned out well.”

    Booker also showed clips on his IG story of his “Gump” shoes with his autograph and inscription that read “Finders Keepers” across Phoenix. In the form of an Easter egg hunt, he placed a few pairs in random locations, including a bus stop along Camelback Road, downtown at McKinley Avenue and under a trailer in front of the Footprint Center.

    He’s done the same thing in early January upon the release of his pink “Sedona” shoe edition at Red Rock State Park at a McDonald’s restaurant in Sedona. When his shoe’s initial “Mirage” editions were released during the 2024 Indianapolis All-Star Weekend, some were placed on a pedestrian signal.

    “I think that was actually the first one in the Phoenix area, and there’s people running all over for them,” Booker said. “Something I plan to continue to do in the future.”

    Booker said earlier this season that giving the shoes away hand-to-hand is “the best way to do it” for his grassroots marketing campaign. He repeated that message at the shootaround Saturday.

    “Nothing’s better than free shoes,” Booker said. “I know that as a kid growing up. And it just makes everybody feel involved. I’ve seen people reaching out to me that were late to the shoes that still had a family experience of trying to hunt them down and move throughout the city and get outside a little bit.”

    Get Ready to Clap Some Fools by Getting ‘Sifu’ for Free

    After giving away some AAA bangers, it feels great to see Epic Games end this on a positive Indie note. The combat system in Sifu is one of the best in any game I’ve ever played and makes everything else pale in comparison. Every action feels snappy, and an electrifying soundtrack makes every battle feel all the more intense because of it. I can’t speak the praises of Sifu enough, and there’s no reason not to claim it for free. Yes, it’s on Epic Games Store, but if you have a Fortnite account, you already have one of these.

    If you’ve never played Sifu, it’s a tough-as-nails game that features a unique aging mechanic. With every death you experience, your character ages. They’ll become stronger, but have a much smaller health pool, making it a choice between your strength versus your stamina. Finding the perfect middle ground is hard, but they’ve thankfully added a difficulty slider to make the game more accessible to everyone after release. Trying to get through this one during the Early Access period was more rewarding than any Souls-like that I’ve ever played, honestly.

    Before we get a Sifu 2, Sloclap is developing Rematch. I’m not a sports guy. But seeing as Sloclap is working on a new soccer game using the same engine as Sifu? I may need to dive in and see what that one is all about. It has my attention enough, and maybe we’ll get to engage in some awesome brawls on the pitch.

    On Monday (Dec. 23), Drake hopped on social media to announce an upcoming livestream perfect for the holidays. Thursday (Dec. 26), he and internet personality Adin Ross will join forces for a “Drizzmas Giveaway,” which comes courtesy of the online casino Stake. Fans have the opportunity to win some impressive gifts, including a romantic vacation, the choice of a Lamborghini or Mercedes G-Class SUV, a year’s worth of rent and the opportunity to witness Drake live during his “Anita Max Win Tour” in Australia. Also spotted were hefty cash prizes, one of which was $100,000 for a lucky Toronto artist or entrepreneur.

    In a short clip shared on Instagram, the Canadian star reminisced about his visual for “God’s Plan,” which consisted of blessing several unexpecting Miami, Florida, residents with varying donations. “People often ask me what was the best day of my life. And there’s so many memories with family, album releases, shows [and] fans showing a deep appreciation for the craft,” he stated. “But my answer is the same every time. The two days that I shot ‘God’s Plan’ were the best days of my life.”

    Drake continued, “The joy that I experienced on those days, making other people happy, you know, changing their week, or their month or their year was an irreplaceable feeling. And that’s why, this Dec. 26, Stake, along with me and Adin Ross, are doing the biggest streaming giveaway of all time.” Near the end, OVO artist Smiley made a humorous cameo appearance.

    Drizzy’s charity plans are likely a welcome break from his legal battle against Universal Music Group, Spotify and iHeartRadio. As REVOLT previously reported, the For All The Dogs star filed petitions accusing the aforementioned entities of colluding to bolster the sales and streams of Kendrick Lamar’s scathing diss track “Not Like Us.” In addition to allegations of illegal schemes, Drake claimed defamation over lyrics that labeled him and his crew as sex offenders.
