Abols, with four languages in his arsenal, glad he gave NHL another shot originally appeared on NBC Sports Philadelphia
VOORHEES, N.J. β Rodrigo Abols was just starting to wake up Sunday morning when he received a phone call from assistant general manager Alyn McCauley.
βIt was one way to make an off day even better,β Abols said.
The 29-year-old was headed to the NHL.
With Ryan Poehling placed on injured reserve, Abols, a Latvian center who had spent the last four seasons playing overseas, was called up by the Flyers. He joined the club for practice Monday, putting himself on the doorstep of his dream.
And he should have no problem connecting with his new teammates. Being able to speak four languages β English, Latvian, Swedish and Russian β can only help.
βThis group and this room has been praised a lot of times,β Abols said. βItβs very easy to fit in here.β
Abols signed with the Flyers last offseason just ahead of the June 15 deadline for players under European contracts. Because of the timing, he admitted to being a bit surprised when general manager Danny Briere reached out with the opportunity.
But Abols was ready to rejoin the AHL. He was a seventh-round draft pick of the Canucks in 2016. Prior to this season, the last time he played in North America was 2019-20, when the coronavirus pandemic abruptly shut things down.
So when the Flyers approached him last summer, he was compelled to leave the SHL for a chance at his NHL debut. That could come Tuesday at the Wells Fargo Center when the Flyers host the Red Wings (7 p.m. ET/NBCSP).
βI kind of felt it inside from the last time when I was here with all the COVID and stuff, there were some questions unanswered for myself,β Abols said. βI didnβt want to let this opportunity slip. When Iβm done with hockey, Iβm glad at least I came here and gave it another shot.β
In 34 games this season with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder has put up nine goals and 10 assists. Over his last 10 games, he recorded three goals and four assists. He has quality length and plays a responsible game, with the ability to win key faceoffs.
What were the reports on Abols?
βThat he has been playing well,β John Tortorella said. βGoing to give him a chance here. β¦ Heβs a center and I guess he has been playing some pretty good hockey there.β
Abols centered Olle Lycksell and Garnet Hathaway on the Flyersβ fourth line at practice. Scott Laughtonβs status for Tuesday is uncertain. The alternate captain was not at practice because of a personal family matter.
For Abols, heβll look to be himself if he gets his chance in the Flyersβ lineup. An NHL debut would make the journey all worth it.
βItβs a dream come true to get an opportunity to play here,β Abols said. βTry to make the most of it and use the strengths I have and see what happens from there.β
Rodrigo Abols will make his NHL debut. Scott Laughton is unavailable as he tends to a personal family matter.

HOUSTON β Dallas Mavericks guard Quentin Grimes was able to relive a life-long dream Wednesday night at the Toyota Center when he played his second-ever NBA game in his hometown of Houston.
Grimes was born in Houston, was a superstar at The Woodlands College Park High School in suburban Houston where he averaged 29.5 points, 8.6 rebounds, 4.6 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks as a senior during the 2017-18 season. That year he also was named the Gatorade State Player of the Year, was chosen to the McDonaldβs All-American, and also captured the All-Greater Houston Player of the Year award.
And in 2021, Grimes led the University of Houston to the NCAA Final Four. In other words, Grimes is a big shot in the city of Houston.
So, playing Wednesdayβs game against the Houston Rockets β where he estimated he had between 45 and 50 family members and friends on handΒ β was a very nice treat for Grimes.
βI tried to get like 20-25 tickets,β he said. βThatβs just off the people that I know that was coming to the game on my family side.
βI know I had some friends hit me up to come up to game, so thatβs a lot of support for me down here in Houston and I really appreciate it for sure.β
When Grimes played for the New York Knicks, he missed their lone game in Houston during his rookie year in 2021-22 due to the NBAβs health and safety protocols. But in his second season with the Knicks, Grimes scored 19 points on 8-of-15 shots in his teamβs 108-88 win over the Rockets in their only trip to Houston.
And four days before the Knicks played in Houston on Feb. 12, 2024, in Grimesβ third season with New York, the Knicks traded him to the Detroit Pistons, who had already played their lone game in Houston prior to that trade.
Thus, Grimes was fired up to play in Houston on Wednesday, and he responded with 17 points, five rebounds and three assists, and was 6-of-13 from the field.
βI think any time you come back home as a player you want to show family and friends, and I thought he was a plus for us tonight,β coach Jason Kidd said. βHe was aggressive (and) he had good looks.β
Most of all, Grimes thoroughly enjoyed being able to play in front of so many friends and members of his family in his home town.
βWhen I was in New York I was only down here one time,β he said. βThe first year I had Covid, the second year I was able to play, and the third year I was traded before I was ever able to play in front of my family.
βSo, I did have a lot of family to come out and support me tonight.β
BRIEFLY: A moment of silence was observed prior to Wednesdayβs Mavs-Rockets game following the tragic incident in New Orleans on Sunday morning which resulted in the death of 14 people and injuries to more than two dozen others . . . After a long and rugged four-game road trip that saw them lose the final three games and travel to three different time zones β the Mavs will not practice on Thursday. On Friday, the Mavs will host the Cleveland Cavaliers, who own the best record in the NBA. Then, the Mavs will play at Memphis on Monday before flying back home to host 40-year old LeBron James and the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday in the second leg of a back-to-back.
