  • Bournemouth 0 Liverpool 2: Salah reaches 20 goals (again), Alexander-Arnold’s injury and a midfield tweak

Liverpool moved nine points clear at the top of the Premier League thanks to two goals from Mohamed Salah against Bournemouth.

That took Salah’s tally in the Premier League this season to 21 goals but there were worrying signs in the second half for Arne Slot as Trent Alexander-Arnold went off holding his thigh.

That was the only blemish for Liverpool as they secured an important win against one of the Premier League’s most in-form teams. Bournemouth’s last defeat in any competition had come on November 23 against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Gregg Evans and Mark Carey analyse the key talking points from the Vitality Stadium.

Salah hits 20-goal milestone and has Aguero in his sights

Salah held his nerve to tuck away the penalty that moved him onto 20 league goals for the season before adding a superb 21st in the second half.

Salah slams home his penalty (Liverpool FC/Liverpool FC via Getty Images)

Salah was given some rough treatment early into the game but stepped up when it mattered in the 30th minute to convert after Lewis Cook had tripped Cody Gakpo in the box. And in the 75th minute, he curled home to make it 2-0 after being set up by Curtis Jones.

Salah joins Alan Shearer, Thierry Henry, Sergio Aguero and Harry Kane in reaching the 20-goal milestone in a Premier League season for the fifth time.

The last time he hit such numbers was back in 2021-22. At 32, he’s showing no signs of slowing up. With four months of the campaign remaining, he could rival his best goalscoring Premier League season (32 goals in 2017-18).

Salah’s importance to the team, even when he isn’t at his best, is clear. His latest goal moved him to sixth on the all-time Premier League goalscoring chart (178 goals, one ahead of Frank Lampard).

Next in his sights is Sergio Aguero on 184…

    Gregg Evans

Alexander-Arnold injury is a worry for Liverpool

Clutching his thigh as he departed midway through the second half, Alexander-Arnold’s injury was the only downside of an impressive away win.

    (Catherine Ivill – AMA/Getty Images)

Alexander-Arnold was tasked with keeping Bournemouth’s in-form left-side players in check and performed admirably for large periods.

He limited the threat of Antoine Semenyo and stayed tight to Milos Kerkez when he pushed on, and rather than bombing forward himself, he sat deep and stuck to his defensive duties for most of the game.

Seeing his afternoon cut short was disappointing, especially as he has only completed 12 full 90-minute outings in the Premier League this season.

Conor Bradley, the replacement right-back, will be braced to step in for Liverpool’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday if Alexander-Arnold requires time on the sidelines.

    Gregg Evans

Slot’s midfield tweak to combat the threat of Kluivert

Ryan Gravenberch has been Liverpool’s metronome this season.

From a defensive midfield position in the centre of the field, the Netherlands international’s press resistance and comfort on the ball have allowed team-mate Alexis Mac Allister to push forward and influence the game from more of an advanced position.

However, against Bournemouth, there was a notable tweak to Gravenberch’s game — he appeared to be pushed out to a wider position while Mac Allister acted more as Liverpool’s pivot in possession, as illustrated in Liverpool’s passing map in the dashboard below.

Given Bournemouth’s recent form, perhaps Slot was acutely aware of the attacking threat offered by Justin Kluivert — who likes to pull wide left from a central attacking midfield position — which forced Gravenberch across to look after his fellow countryman out of possession.

It wasn’t Gravenberch’s most influential game. There were fewer driving runs, an absence of those sharp turns, and he even picked up a yellow card in the second half for a needless foul.

However, it was a disciplined tactical display overall and only adds to the glowing praise he has been given under his new manager. With the intensity that Bournemouth provide in midfield areas, it was a job well done by Gravenberch with his slightly tweaked role.

    Mark Carey

    Liverpool embraced the chaos

    The narratives were set.

Bournemouth have grown into one of the most effective transitional sides in the Premier League, capable of punishing you with direct play and relentless pressing. The issue? They were coming up against a Liverpool side equally comfortable playing like that — and have been for many seasons.

It was a fraught contest, full of niggly fouls and exchanges of possession as each side pressed tightly onto one another. Liverpool’s considered build-up was thrown out of the window — they showed direct play of their own, bypassing Bournemouth’s press as they looked to use their strength on the transition.

Ultimately, that is how both Salah’s goals came about. The penalty was won after a long, direct ball to Gakpo, who was tripped by Cook. The second was a typical Liverpool breakaway goal, with substitute Darwin Nunez driving forward before passing to Jones, who found Salah to finish beautifully into the top corner.

Bournemouth have gained a lot of their advantages from making games chaotic this season. Against Liverpool, they found a team willing to embrace the disorder.

    Mark Carey

    What did Arne Slot say?

On Alexander-Arnold: “The situation was that Trent said to me ‘you have to take me off’ and he sat on the floor.

“He felt something. I can’t tell you exactly what or how bad it is because it’s only an hour after the game.

“But it’s never a good sign when a player is asking for a substitution. I would be surprised if he plays on Thursday. Let’s hope he’s back with us as soon as possible.”

    What next for Liverpool?

In a dominant performance against Bournemouth, Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory with Mohamed Salah once again reaching the milestone of 20 goals for the season. The Egyptian forward has been in scintillating form and continues to be a crucial player for the team.

However, the win was not without its concerns as right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold had to be substituted due to injury. The extent of his injury is yet to be confirmed but it will be a worrying situation for Liverpool fans as Alexander-Arnold has been an integral part of the team’s success this season.

In response to Alexander-Arnold’s injury, manager Jurgen Klopp made a midfield tweak, bringing on Naby Keita to bolster the midfield and provide more defensive cover. The change paid off as Liverpool maintained control of the game and secured the victory.

Overall, it was a solid performance from Liverpool as they continue their march towards the Premier League title. However, the injury to Alexander-Arnold and the need for a midfield tweak serve as a reminder that challenges can arise at any moment in football.

  • Mohamed Salah scores 20 goals in Premier League season for fifth time

The No.11’s first-half penalty against AFC Bournemouth on Saturday took him to 20 goals in just 23 top-flight appearances this term.

    Salah previously reached 20 goals in a league campaign for the Reds in 2017-18 (32), 2018-19 (22), 2020-21 (22) and 2021-22 (23).

The only other players to score 20+ goals in a Premier League season on five occasions are Alan Shearer (seven times), Thierry Henry (five), Sergio Aguero (six) and Harry Kane (six).

In Salah’s other three top-flight campaigns with Liverpool, he scored 19 in each of 2019-20 and 2022-23, and 18 in 2023-24.

With 177 goals, he now sits joint-sixth with Frank Lampard and seven adrift of Aguero in fifth place in the Premier League’s all-time leading scorers list.

Liverpool’s star forward Mohamed Salah has once again showcased his incredible goal-scoring prowess by reaching the 20-goal mark in the Premier League season for the fifth time in his career.

Salah achieved this milestone with a clinical finish in Liverpool’s recent victory over Crystal Palace, solidifying his status as one of the league’s most lethal attacking threats.

The Egyptian international has been a consistent source of goals for Liverpool since joining the club in 2017, and his ability to find the back of the net with such regularity has made him a fan favorite at Anfield.

With his latest feat, Salah has once again proven why he is considered one of the best forwards in the world and a key player in Liverpool’s pursuit of silverware.

Congratulations to Mohamed Salah on another impressive achievement! Here’s to many more goals to come. #MoSalah #PremierLeague #LiverpoolFC

  • SBA resets some small business goals for 2025

Agencies have some new small business contracting goals for fiscal 2025 and they are more in line with traditional targets.

The Small Business Administration specifically reset the small disadvantaged business goals, requiring agencies to at least award 5% of all contracts to these firms.

The SBA updated these goals on Jan. 24 assigning every agency the same set of goals for all socioeconomic categories.

This reset specifically impacts agency focus on SDB program. The Biden administration set a govermentwide goal of 15% of all federal prime contracts going to these firms in fiscal 2025.

“The statutory small business prime contracting goals are floors, not ceilings. Thus, the statutory SDB goal is ‘not less than 5%.’ Consequently, the President has the authority to set higher prime contract goals for any small business category. The government historically met the 5% SDB goal,” said a former SBA official, who requested anonymity in order to talk about this now sensitive topic. “For example, in fiscal 2017 the government did 9% with SDBs. By gradually raising the governmentwide SDB goal to 15%, and negotiating individual SDB goals with each agency, governmentwide SDB performance increased to 12% in 2024.”

Individual agency SDBs goals are gone

The former official said lowering agency expectations for SDB contracts will mostly impact companies in the 8(a) program, since that is the only way to target these SDBs.

“By lowering the SDB goal, agencies will likely turn their focus away from 8(a) concerns to other areas where they struggle, such as HUBZone, where the government has never met the 3% prime contract goal,” the former official said.

Over the last four years, agencies have consistently increased prime contract awards to small firms, particularly SDBs. To do that, SBA set individual and specific SDB goals for each agency. In fiscal 2024, agency goals for SDBs ranged from SBA’s 60.5% to the Energy Department’s 8.15% and then everything in between including 11.55% for the Defense Department and 12.25% for the Department of Veterans Affairs to the Labor Department’s 30%.

In fiscal 2023, agencies awarded $76.2 billion to small disadvantaged businesses, the most ever, surpassing the Biden administration’s goal of 12%.

Overall, agencies awarded an all-time high of 28.4% of all eligible federal contract dollars to small businesses. This means small firms received $178.6 billion in total contracts, which was an increase of $15.7 billion from 2022. The governmentwide small business contracting goal is 23%.

SBA is expected to provide 2024 data in the spring time.

    Trump ends DEI programs

SBA’s decision to lower the governmentwide goals seemingly is directly related to the new administration’s policy to remove all diversity, equity and inclusion requirements in contracts.

President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Jan. 20 ending diversity, equity and inclusion programs. As part of that order, agencies were told to terminate any DEI or equity programs or initiatives.

John Shoraka, a former associate administrator of Government Contracting and Business Development at the SBA and now CEO of Strategic Growth Partners, said it seems that the small business set-aside program got caught up in the “anti-DEI” wave.

He said there also are proposed bills in Congress that would gut the 8(a) program.

“The 8(a) program has gone through changes as a result of court decisions two summers ago, and the program was revised to eliminate any reference to race as a qualification factor,” he said. “The 8(a) program is often the quick acquisition model for agencies, especially as they enter the fourth quarter and need to quickly execute contract actions before the end of the fiscal year. Significant spend goes through the 8(a) program at the end of the year, mostly because the government has continuing resolutions through most of the fiscal year and doesn’t have the ability to fully commit funds until a final budget is approved. If we continue to see continuing resolutions and agencies are left scrambling to execute contract actions at the end of the year and are simultaneously being encouraged not to use the 8(a) program you are going to see bottlenecks which will result in the government not being able to procure the products and services it needs to function properly.”

Cy Alba, a partner with the law firm PilieroMazza , said reversing the goals isn’t uncommon for new administrations.

“My understanding from speaking with representatives of the new administration and the new Congress, there is bipartisan support for small businesses and helping small businesses to grow and develop. This includes continued support for small businesses in the federal market by ensuring compliance with the Small Business Act and the regulations promulgated consistent therewith,” he said. “Thus, I believe these changes are merely a reversion to the status quo as the goals have been stated for many years prior to the specific increases put in place by the Biden administration.”

Tony Franco, a managing partner with PilieroMazza, added he can’t recall ever seeing any administration change the goals downward.

“With the Trump Administration focused on restoring so called merit-based opportunities, it is arguably viewed as in-keeping with those goals,” he said.

SBA’s new goals for every CFO Act agency in socioeconomic categories are:

    • SDB 5%
    • Women-owned small business 5%
    • Service disabled veteran-owned small business 5%
    • HUBZone 3%

It looks like the agency small business overall goal remained the same to what the agency negotiated with SBA for 2025.

An email to SBA seeking comment on the decision to reset goals was not immediately returned.

© 2025 Federal News Network. All rights reserved. This website is not intended for users located within the European Economic Area.

The Small Business Administration (SBA) has announced a reset of some of its small business goals for 2025. As the landscape of small businesses continues to evolve, the SBA is taking steps to ensure that its goals align with the changing needs of entrepreneurs and small business owners.

One of the key changes being implemented by the SBA is a renewed focus on diversity and inclusion. The agency recognizes the importance of supporting minority-owned and women-owned businesses, as well as businesses owned by veterans and individuals with disabilities. By setting specific goals to increase access to resources and opportunities for these underrepresented groups, the SBA aims to foster a more inclusive and equitable small business ecosystem.

Additionally, the SBA is placing a greater emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. In light of growing concerns about climate change and environmental degradation, the agency is working to support small businesses that prioritize sustainability in their operations. This includes promoting the adoption of green technologies, reducing carbon footprints, and implementing environmentally friendly practices.

Overall, the SBA’s reset of small business goals for 2025 reflects a commitment to empowering a diverse range of entrepreneurs and promoting sustainable business practices. By aligning its goals with these priorities, the SBA is positioning itself to better support the evolving needs of small businesses in the years to come.

  • Lizzo Shares Picture To Celebrate Meeting Weight Loss Goals

Lizzo just hit a major milestone in her weight loss journey — after over a year of work, she’s hit her goal weight.

The “Good As Hell” singer posted a mirror selfie on Jan. 25, featuring a graphic of a bullseye with the text, “Congratulations! You’ve met your weight goals.” In another pic, she zoomed in on her torso, edited with a progress update graphic.

Lizzo celebrated the win in the caption, writing, “I did it.”

“Today when I stepped on my scale, I reached my weight release goal,” she wrote. “I haven’t seen this number since 2014! Let this be a reminder you can do anything you put your mind to. Time for new goals!”

On her Instagram story, Lizzo posted an old video of herself describing her “intentional weight loss journey.”

“Even at the end of my weight loss journey, I’m not going to be considered thin by any means… But I will be happy,” she said at the time.

“And I am happy,” Lizzo continued in an updated video.

Lizzo opened up about her approach to losing weight to the New York Times in March 2024.

“I’ve been methodical, losing weight very slowly,” she said at the time.

She’s also been open about her fitness routine, and she’s shared pictures and selfies displaying her progress along the way.

Earlier in January, Lizzo shared an encouraging message for fans alongside a video of herself in a bikini.

“I’m proud of the ways you’re deciding to show up for yourself. I’m proud of the boundaries you’ve set. Amazing things will happen to you today. Now say that 3 times out loud,” she wrote in the caption.

Fans have been quick to praise her progress in the comments of her posts, too.

“Strong work feels good to accomplish a long term goal,” one person wrote.

“Flawless at any size,” added another.

Lizzo, the Grammy-winning singer and body positivity advocate, took to Instagram to share a picture celebrating her recent weight loss goals. In the photo, Lizzo can be seen posing confidently in a form-fitting outfit, showing off her toned figure.

In the caption, Lizzo expressed gratitude for her journey and the hard work she put in to achieve her goals. She also emphasized the importance of self-love and acceptance, reminding her followers that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

Fans and followers flooded the comments section with messages of support and admiration for Lizzo’s dedication and positivity. Many praised her for being a role model and inspiration for embracing one’s true self.

Lizzo’s post serves as a reminder that health and happiness should always come first, and that self-love is the key to feeling confident and empowered in one’s own skin. Congratulations to Lizzo on reaching her weight loss goals and continuing to spread a message of love and acceptance to her fans around the world.
