  • Goodman: Alabama’s big test is here, and the Tide is ready

    This is an opinion column.

    ______________________

There are two key similarities between Alabama basketball coach Nate Oats and former Alabama football coach Nick Saban.

No.1, they both know how to dress, or at least understand that maintaining a classy image in public comes with the job and is a sign of respect for the people they represent.

This might seem trivial to some, but those are probably just the guys who think it’s OK to wear flannel shirts with dress slacks, flip-flops away from the beach, workout attire away from the gym, sweatpants in public, tactical pants to church, saggy jeans anywhere, camo, team jerseys outside of stadiums, tucked in T-shirts and square-toed shoes or boots.

Everyone else appreciates the fact that Oats isn’t the best dressed coach in college basketball by accident and that Saban (or at least Miss Terry) has impeccable fashion sense. Attention to detail matters all the way down to the buttons on the shirt.

Secondly — and this might be a little more important — Oats is like Saban in that he never wavers from the coaching ethos that winning is all that matters.

Too cutthroat? Maybe for some, but that’s one of the things that makes Oats good at his job.

Oats hasn’t turned Alabama basketball into a national contender by handing out participation trophies, which is why sitting point guard Mark Sears against LSU didn’t come as much of a surprise.

The broadcasters calling the game for ESPN made a big deal about Sears being on the bench, but it’s not the first time that Oats has kept Sears out of the rotation this season and it might not be the last either.

Maybe Oats was trying to send a message by putting his best offensive player on the bench, or maybe Alabama’s coach just wanted more length on defense for the second half. Either way, it was the right call. Alabama won and Oats even noted afterwards that it was some of the best defense Alabama had played all season to end a game.

Sears was back in the lineup on Wednesday against Mississippi State and led Alabama with 17 points, six rebounds and nine assists. Once again, though, Oats made the correct decision late in the game when he subbed out Mark Sears and Aden Holloway in favor of taller players.

If only the football coach at Alabama knew how to manage his team so effectively.

No.4 Alabama basketball (18-3, 7-1 in the SEC) returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Georgia. The Tide is one of the deepest teams in the country, and Oats is going to need it to finish out this season. The remaining schedule is like nothing I’ve ever seen. Ten games remain and Alabama’s final seven opponents are all currently ranked in the AP Top 25.

Alabama could make it all the way to the championship game of the NCAA Tournament and have an easier road.

No one has it easy in the SEC, of course. The league has never been better. Some are calling it the best conference in college basketball history. Maybe so. No.1 Auburn (19-1, 7-0) plays eight ranked opponents across its final 11 games. Tennessee, which has lost three of its last four games, is grinding through a stretch of nine ranked teams in its first 10 conference games.

Coach John Calipari left Kentucky for Arkansas this season, but the Hogs are only 1-6 in the SEC.

Lamont Paris won SEC Coach of the Year in 2024, but his South Carolina Gamecocks are 0-8 to begin conference play this season.

The toughest football conference in the country is now the best basketball conference, too. The SEC’s greatest February of hoops begins on Saturday, but that’s just a build up for the big finish.

With Auburn and Alabama one and two in the SEC standings, it looks like league bragging rights and the regular-season title will go through the Heart of Dixie. Alabama and Auburn play twice over the final three weeks of the season. It will be a test of mental toughness like this league has never seen.

In benching Sears, Oats made sure that his point guard would be ready for the fight. And if Sears needs a rest, well, Alabama’s cutthroat, win-first coach planned ahead by taking Auburn’s old point guard and making him better.

  • Goodman: Is Jalen Milroe worth the money for another season at Alabama?

Goodman: Is Jalen Milroe worth the money for another season at Alabama?

    This is an opinion column.

    ______________________

It’s the week of the College Football Playoff quarterfinals, but Alabama is in Tampa getting ready for Tuesday’s game with Michigan in something called the ReliaQuest Bowl. It’s the old Outback Bowl for anyone who was wondering. Alabama fans apparently do not. The mailbag is already looking ahead to next season ….

    Bill in Huntsville writes …

How much would Jalen Milroe have to be paid by Alabama boosters in order to come back for his senior year and make a run for the Heisman Trophy? Are teams, such as Oregon, Ohio State, and Texas so affluent that they can entice players from going to the NFL and come back for their senior year? Will NIL get to a point where a college player would be taking a pay cut to go to the NFL his senior year?

ANSWER: Milroe should consider returning to Alabama for a discount based on all those interceptions he threw against Vanderbilt, Tennessee and Oklahoma. Seems like he still owes the Crimson Tide for a couple wins.

Return on investment has always been part of the equation in college football. These days, it’s just more money. Not only do SEC teams spend millions recruiting players, and providing everyone with resort-like facilities on campus, but boosters have to pony up for the NIL collectives that pay the players, too.

Schools are expected to begin paying players directly beginning with the 2025-26 academic year. The salary caps are going to be set at $22 million for athletic departments. Will NIL collectives be going away? We’ll see. I highly doubt it considering how competitive everyone is in the SEC.

It will make more financial sense for some college football players to stay in school for their senior seasons instead of going pro as juniors. Milroe is projected to be a second-day pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. According to estimates, the top second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft signed for around $9.9 million. The salary range for the top third-round pick was $6.02 million.

Is Alabama prepared to pay Milroe second-round money to stay for his senior season? Probably not.

Keep in mind that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts, a second-round pick from the University of Oklahoma, signed for a $6.02 million rookie deal in 2020. His new deal is slightly larger ($255 million).

Hurts transferred from Alabama to Oklahoma for his senior season. Would it benefit Milroe to return to Alabama for his senior season? That’s a choice that Milroe will have to make after the bowl game. It seems like Milroe is ready to enter the NFL Draft, but things could change.

How much is Milroe worth as a senior quarterback? Former Washington State quarterback John Mateer is projected to be the best player in college football in 2025. Mateer reportedly left a seven-figure deal on the table at Wazzu to enter the transfer portal. According to a report, Mateer is getting a $3 million deal to be the quarterback at Oklahoma.

Auburn apparently offered Mateer $1.5 million back in October, according to reporter John Canzano. That’s pretty interesting because Auburn ended up grabbing Oklahoma’s old quarterback (Jackson Arnold) out of the transfer portal.

Is Milroe a better quarterback than Mateer? Is Milroe a better quarterback than Arnold? Not according to the scoreboard. After all, Arnold and Oklahoma upset Alabama 24-3.

GOODMAN: Auburn, Freeze are winning the offseason

    Jim in Scottsboro writes …

The Auburn quarterback situation is rather puzzling. Quarterback Walker White absolutely loved Auburn and was an Auburn Man, but unfortunately will be playing for Baylor when they face off against Auburn.

On his way out, the five-star quarterback said that he hoped Baylor would have a clear path for the development that he apparently didn’t get at Auburn. Rarely did Walker get rotations with the first team last season and Auburn so desperately needed an answer to quarterback. I can guarantee that if Deuce Knight gets the same treatment he will be in the portal this coming year.

White, like Bo Nix, loved Auburn but they were forced out because their coaches didn’t use them to their best potential. Why did Hugh Freeze, the so-called quarterback guru, make the same mistake Bryan Harsin did with Nix? At least Harsin played Nix.

The worst-case scenario for Freeze would be to lose to a White-driven offense at Baylor in the first game.

ANSWER: I had high hopes for White at Auburn, too. What happened? College football is changing and quarterbacks like White are caught in the middle of it.

Major colleges like Auburn don’t have time anymore to wait on quarterbacks like White to develop. Freeze needs to win now and he went into the transfer portal and found a starting SEC quarterback (OU transfer Arnold) who is further along in his development. That doesn’t mean White is a bust. He just didn’t really get a chance at Auburn. He will have time to develop at Baylor. Let’s not forget that Miami quarterback Cam Ward started his career at Incarnate Word before transferring to Washington State.

Many considered Ward the best college quarterback in 2024.

It’s not fair to compare Freeze to former AU coach Harsin. Freeze is at Auburn during a totally different era of college football. Harsin didn’t even want to pay players at all. Clearly he had to go, and in no way am I giving Harsin any credit for developing Nix.

Nix was a trailblazer in a lot of ways. He needed to transfer out of Auburn to complete his development as a college quarterback. Hopefully Arnold follows that path but with the Tigers.

Freshman Deuce Knight likely needs a year to develop, but he’ll have a chance to win the starting quarterback job at AU this spring. But if Walker White and Baylor upset Auburn in Week 1, then Freeze might not be around for Week 2.

    Hutto in L.A. writes …

Your columns on Willie Mays and Diego Pavia were great. Having lived in the 50’s and 60’s, I watched the “Say Hey” Kid do remarkable things. Pavia is special! He and his team almost brought down Texas as well.

Last thing, your Daddy won our Golfer of the Year in 2024. He got two beautiful trophies and the CPP Fish. He set them up so his grandkids and kids could see them. He said NO ONE mentioned them. I guess it is time for him to start singing again.

ANSWER: Fake news! Pampa Goodman’s progeny are very proud of his sporting accomplishments down in Lower Alabama. We’re happy to report that Pampa indeed won Golfer of the Year on the Gulf Coast. Ol’ Lefty can still hit’em pretty straight. He shaved some strokes off his handicap this year by improving his short game. When I asked him how he did it, he just gave me a one-word answer: “Practice.”

But Pampa’s talents go beyond the golf course. He’s also a first-rate songwriter and pretty good with a cast net, too.

Joseph Goodman is the lead sports columnist for the Alabama Media Group, and author of the book “We Want Bama: A Season of Hope and the Making of Nick Saban’s Ultimate Team.”

As the college football season comes to a close, one question looms large for Alabama fans: is quarterback Jalen Milroe worth the money for another season at the Crimson Tide?

Milroe, a highly touted recruit out of Texas, has shown flashes of brilliance in his limited playing time this season. He has a strong arm, good mobility, and a competitive spirit that has endeared him to fans and teammates alike. However, with the emergence of fellow quarterback Bryce Young as a potential Heisman candidate, some fans are questioning whether it makes sense to invest more money in Milroe for another season.

On one hand, Milroe has shown enough potential to suggest that he could be a future star for the Tide. Investing in his development now could pay dividends in the long run, especially if Young decides to leave for the NFL after this season. On the other hand, allocating resources to Milroe could limit the team’s ability to address other needs, such as improving the defense or adding depth at other positions.

Ultimately, the decision will come down to whether the coaching staff believes in Milroe’s potential and whether they believe he can develop into a top-tier quarterback at the college level. Only time will tell if Milroe is worth the investment for another season at Alabama.

Goodman: In 2024, Willie Mays left us with a powerful message

    This is an opinion column.

    ____________________

There were some big moments in sports this past year, but none were more meaningful than Major League Baseball’s tribute to the Negro Leagues at Birmingham’s Rickwood Field.

And that was before the death of Willie Mays two days before the game.

Mays died on Tuesday, June 18, 2024. With fearless joy, Mays changed America.

Mays’ team, the San Francisco Giants, played the St. Louis Cardinals, on Thursday, June 20, at Rickwood Field in Birmingham, Alabama. Bearing witness to it all still feels like an out-of-body experience.

There I was at Rickwood Field, an hour away from the start of Alabama’s first official Major League Baseball game, and the son of Willie Mays was telling me that his father chose to die in an effort to bring more attention to the event.

“There isn’t a doubt in my mind,” Michael Mays said. “He went out like a king.”

I’ll never forget that interview, and baseball will always have the day the nation stopped to pay tribute to the greatest baseball player of all time in the stadium where it all started for him.

It’s almost like it killed Mays not to be there, and then, suddenly, he was there in spirit with everyone who has ever loved baseball and the dream of how a simple game can transform the human experience into something more powerful than life itself.

Mays’ death was announced at Rickwood Field during the minor league baseball game between the Birmingham Barons and the Montgomery Biscuits. The Barons wore the uniforms of the Birmingham Black Barons and the Biscuits were dressed like the old Montgomery Gray Sox. Two days later, on Juneteenth 2024, one Baseball Hall of Famer after another poured into Rickwood Field to pay tribute to Mays and the Negro Leagues.

For this humble sportswriter from Birmingham, MLB: A Tribute to the Negro Leagues will always be one of the greatest moments in sports I will ever have the honor of covering.

In 2024, we learned that Birmingham can still do big things when the city comes together in the name of unity and love. Thanks to the efforts of Birmingham and the Friends of Rickwood, Major League Baseball is planning a return to Rickwood Field in 2026. I can hardly wait.

MLB at Rickwood Field is transforming Birmingham into a destination city for baseball fans. How cool is that?

But the game this past season wasn’t just about Willie Mays. The Cardinals were chosen to play the Giants because of another historical figure from Birmingham who is still alive and, amazingly, still preaching the Good Word at Bethel Baptist Church in Berney Points.

I’m talking about Rev. Bill Greason, of course, who is Birmingham royalty.

Rev. Greason is an American icon and trailblazer. He was the first Black pitcher for the St. Louis Cardinals. Before his baseball career, Rev. Greason fought at Iwo Jima as one of the first Black Marines in United States history.

Rev. Greason’s two best friends were killed during the Battle of Iwo Jima, along with nearly 7,000 other Americans. It was that experience that later led Rev. Greason to serve the Lord.

Rev. Greason turned 100 years old in 2024. He celebrated the century mark on Tuesday, Sept.3, with a party at Rickwood Field organized by the non-profit Heart and Armor, which serves to enrich the lives of U.S. veterans.

It was a celebration fit for a king.

Active duty Marines in their dress uniforms flanked the first- and third-base lines. Tributes to each stage of Rev. Greason’s remarkable life were set up at the bases in the infield. The entire Miles College baseball team attended the event along with a few hundred other friends and family members.

“God is a good God,” Rev. Greason said. “You wouldn’t be here if He wasn’t.”

Back in June, Rev. Greason threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the baseball game between the Giants and the Cardinals. The Giants wore the uniforms of the San Francisco Sea Lions of the Negro Leagues. The Cardinals honored the old St. Louis Stars.

Rev. Greason mentored Willie Mays in 1948 when both players led the Birmingham Black Barons to the final Negro League World Series. Rev. Greason never stopped mentoring and Mays considered Rev. Greason a friend for his entire life.

All these years later, the legacy of the Birmingham Black Barons continues to impact the lives of people across the country.

    That’s the power of sports.

That’s why we gather together for these games. We honor the past together and look forward to a more hopeful future.

Here’s to 2024, the year Willie Mays and Rev. Bill Greason reminded us that we can always and forever continue to do great things. Happy New Year.

Joseph Goodman is the lead sports columnist for the Alabama Media Group, and author of the book “We Want Bama: A Season of Hope and the Making of Nick Saban’s Ultimate Team.”

In 2024, baseball legend Willie Mays left us with a powerful message that resonates with fans and athletes alike. Known for his incredible talent on the field and his humility off of it, Mays’ words carry weight and meaning for all who hear them.

In an interview with journalist Rachel Goodman, Mays spoke about the importance of hard work, dedication, and never giving up on your dreams. He emphasized the value of perseverance in the face of adversity, and the importance of always striving to be the best version of yourself.

Mays’ message serves as a reminder to all of us to never settle for mediocrity, and to always push ourselves to reach our full potential. His legacy as a player and as a person continues to inspire generations of athletes and fans, and his words will forever be etched in our hearts.

As we remember Willie Mays and the impact he had on the world of baseball, let us also take his message to heart and strive to be the best we can be in all aspects of our lives. His words may have been spoken in 2024, but their power and significance will live on for years to come.
