  • Governor Newsom issues executive order to help California capture and store more water from upcoming severe storms

    More groundwater, more water storage

California has invested more than $9 billion to boost California’s water supplies over the past three years, taking aggressive action to prepare for the impacts of climate-driven extremes in weather on the state’s water supplies. In 2024, for the first time since 2019, California’s groundwater storage increased – a direct result of state and local actions to capture and store more water underground during last year’s historic wet season.

Today’s announcement continues the effective work of prior years. Since 2019, the Governor has allocated $1.6 billion for flood preparedness and response, part of the historic $7.3 billion investment package and to strengthen California’s water resilience. During previous wet seasons, Governor Gavin Newsom and the state have taken strong action to help local communities, expanding groundwater recharge by 1.6 million acre-feet through:

    • Executive orders and legislation to capture more water. Governor Newsom signed executive orders to expand groundwater recharge by 400,000 acre-feet, as well as signing legislation to build more infrastructure.
    • Fast-tracking groundwater recharge projects. The state streamlined groundwater recharge permits to allow for 1.2 million acre-feet of groundwater recharge, as well as investing in groundwater recharge projects.
    • Maximizing stormwater capture. Investing millions for 67 stormwater projects to take advantage of major storm events.
    • Ambitious goals. Setting the statewide goal to expand average annual groundwater recharge by at least 500,000 acre-feet as outlined in the Water Supply Strategy.
    • Modernizing infrastructure. The state is advancing new projects to protect communities in the face of extreme droughts and floods. This includes the Sites Reservoir project, which will capture water during wet seasons and store it for use during drier seasons – holding up to 1.5 million acre-feet of water, as much as 3 million households’ yearly usage, and the Delta Conveyance Project, which will help protect water access, improve the capture and movement of water, and provide access to clean drinking water for 27 million Californians. Find more critical water infrastructure projects at build.ca.gov.
    • Launching new data and innovative tools for tracking recharge action. The state has conducted 16,000 miles of geophysical surveys and developed new models and dashboards to deliver up-to-date data on California’s groundwater basins. These resources help local communities better understand their aquifer systems, identify fast paths for recharge, and support both local and statewide groundwater management efforts.

    Preparing the state for storms

Governor Newsom is deploying resources and thousands of personnel to communities throughout Northern California in anticipation of the storm system.

Newly deployed resources include swift water rescue crews and fire engines in El Dorado County and Nevada County, as well as fire engines in Glenn County, added overnight. More resources will be deployed to further help protect communities.

Yesterday, Governor Newsom directed the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) to coordinate state and local partners to deploy emergency resources to support impacted communities. State officials are urging people to take precautions now before the storm arrives, and to stay informed.

Governor Newsom Takes Action to Ensure California is Prepared for Severe Storms

In an effort to better prepare California for upcoming severe storms and ensure water security for the future, Governor Gavin Newsom has issued an executive order to help the state capture and store more water. With drought conditions continuing to affect the state, it is crucial that steps are taken to maximize water resources.

The executive order includes provisions for increasing water storage capacity, investing in water infrastructure projects, and improving water management practices. By capturing and storing more water from upcoming storms, California can better handle periods of drought and ensure a more reliable water supply for residents, farmers, and ecosystems.

Governor Newsom’s proactive approach to water management is a critical step in safeguarding California’s water resources for generations to come. By taking action now, the state can better prepare for the challenges posed by climate change and ensure a sustainable water future for all Californians.

  • Pennsylvania governor spurns Peta’s offer to replace Punxsutawney Phil with cake on Groundhog Day | Pennsylvania

Pennsylvania’s governor, Josh Shapiro, is claws out in a dispute with animal rights organization Peta over Groundhog Day, pushing back against activists who suggested that the world-famous marmot Punxsutawney Phil should be replaced with a cake.

Punxsutawney Phil headlines the yearly Groundhog Day festival in this small Pennsylvania town. The mythos surrounding this event maintains that this woodchuck can predict whether spring will start early, depending on whether he sees his shadow when exiting his nest.

Groundhog Day takes place on 2 February. Sunday’s event marks its 139th year.

A dispute between Shapiro and Peta started to unfold on 21 January when the organization sent a letter to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club’s president, Tom Dunkel, with a controversial pitch.

“Peta will deliver a delicious ‘Weather Reveal’ vegan cake each Groundhog Day in perpetuity if Dunkel agrees to let Punxsutawney Phil and his family retire to a reputable sanctuary, a move that will earn the outfit kudos from wildlife fans,” the group said in a press release.

“In a fun play on viral gender reveal videos, Peta’s tasty treat would be cut to expose one of two colors: blue, signifying six more weeks of winter, or pink, indicating an early spring,” the group explained in its pun-filled note. (Among Peta’s jeux de mots: “This would allow you to still make tourism dough while showing Phil a slice of decency.”)

Shapiro didn’t bite. The Democrat said, “Come and take it,” in a 31 January tweet.

Peta responded to Shapiro’s taunt on Saturday, replying to his X post: “It’s wonderful that you support Phil’s rehabilitation and release to a sanctuary! How would you like us to arrange pick up for him?”

Asked for comment on the ongoing dispute, Shapiro’s office said that he stood firm in support of Phil.

“The governor is dead serious in his defense of this historic Pennsylvania tradition and remains committed to protecting Punxsutawney Phil and the inner circle, and the role they play in the Groundhog Day celebration,” Manuel Bonder, Shapiro’s press secretary, told the Guardian.

The defense of Punxsutawney Phil made for strange bedfellows, WCHS noted.

“I agree with Governor Shapiro on something,” wrote Gabriella Hoffman, director of the Independent Women’s Forum Center for Energy and Conservation. “Peta is terrible.”

Groundhog Day traces its root to pre-Christian holidays feting seasonal turning points, according to the Library of Congress. When western European groups such as the Celts were converted to Christianity, church officials could not get them to abandon these festivals.

The first of February, among the days feting seasonal turning points, broadened into 2 February, transitioning into Candlemas, according to the Library of Congress. An English folk song showed that Candlemas became associated with weather prediction, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club.

When this belief arrived in Germany, it came to include the hedgehog. In German lore, if “the hedgehog saw his shadow on Candlemas Day there would be a ‘Second Winter’ or six more weeks of bad weather”. German immigrants to the US brought their traditions but had to adapt to the lack of hedgehogs, the club said.

They picked another hibernating mammal: the groundhog.

Groundhog Day now brings 20,000-30,000 tourists to the area each year, according to WTAE. Tourists don’t seem to mind that Phil’s calls aren’t all that accurate, with scientists determining that a mere 35% of his predictions have been correct.

On Groundhog Day, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf made headlines by rejecting PETA’s proposal to replace Punxsutawney Phil with a cake for the annual weather prediction tradition. The animal rights organization suggested that using a cake instead of a live groundhog would be more ethical and prevent harm to the animal.

In response, Governor Wolf stated that Punxsutawney Phil is a beloved tradition in Pennsylvania and that he sees no reason to change it. He emphasized the importance of respecting and preserving cultural traditions, even if they may seem outdated or controversial.

While PETA’s intentions may have been well-meaning, it seems that Punxsutawney Phil will continue to be the star of Groundhog Day in Pennsylvania for the foreseeable future. Love it or hate it, the tradition lives on.

In an exclusive interview, Rachel Maddow interviews Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, former Democratic nominee for vice president, in his first interview since the election, about how the Donald Trump administration’s ill-advised freeze of federal funds exposes the role of Project 2025 in the Trump administration’s plans, and Trump’s ultimate goal of destroying the U.S. government.

On a recent episode of The Rachel Maddow Show, host Rachel Maddow sat down with Minnesota Governor Tim Walz to discuss the latest developments in the Trump administration’s efforts to dismantle the U.S. government.

Governor Walz expressed deep concerns about the President’s actions, citing his disregard for democratic norms and the rule of law. He emphasized the importance of protecting the institutions that uphold our democracy and the need for elected officials to hold the President accountable.

The interview shed light on the growing tension between the Trump administration and state governments, as well as the challenges facing states in maintaining their autonomy in the face of federal overreach.

As the Trump administration continues to push its agenda of dismantling government institutions, Governor Walz urged Americans to stay informed, engaged, and vigilant in defending our democracy.

  • Knoxville Mayor and WWE Hall-of-Famer Glenn Jacobs: I Would “Certainly” Support Sen. Blackburn if She Runs for TN Governor

Today on the Guy Benson Show, guest host Todd Piro was joined by Knoxville Mayor and WWE hall-of-fame wrester Glenn Jacobs (a.k.a. Kane). Jacobs and Piro discussed his journey from the wrestling ring into the lions den of politics. Jacobs discussed his story and why he thinks that America is much better off and feels more hopeful under President Trump. Jacobs also detailed his experience at Trump’s inauguration and showed his support for Tennessee Senator Marsha Blackburn in a potential bid for Tennessee governor. Listen to the full interview below!

Read the full (automated) interview below:

Todd Piro: His name is Glenn Thomas Jacobs. A pretty, pretty American name, right? Well, you may know by a different name. If you are one of my fraternity brothers from the late 90s, early 2000s, they are Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. You know him as WWE Hall of Famer Kane. He’s also the mayor of Knox County. Since the year 2018. Mr. Jacobs Excuse me. Mayor Jacobs, great to have you on The Guy Benson Show. How are you, sir?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): I’m doing great. Thanks for having me, Todd.

Todd Piro: You’re seven feet tall, is that correct?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Well, I’m actually about six eight in wrestling boots. I was a little taller, but I’m pretty tall, dude.

Todd Piro: There you go. Nonetheless. Yeah. Six, eight, seven. I mean, we’re. We’re picking nits here. But, you know, I’ve seen you a lot on the channel recently. Haven’t had an opportunity to interview you on my program on the TV, so we’ll do it here on radio. And you have an absolutely fascinating story because, again, I’m not going to sit here and be a poser and say I’m a big WWF, WWE guy, although I do live right down the street from the headquarters in Stamford, Connecticut. But but I did, you know, grow up at a time, especially in my fraternity days, where my brothers used to gather around the TV. I mean, these are Ivy League educated cats, right? And they would sit there and they would watch you. They would watch Stone cold. They would watch all these guys and get into it. It shaped a generation. And now you’re trying to shape a generation as a politician. So how did you make that transition?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): First, you went to Dartmouth, right? Yes, sir, I heard. Yeah. Yeah. My niece actually went to Dartmouth for medical school. She’s not orthopedic surgeon, so she’s really smart. I like to say it’s a good it’s a good school. But yes, for me, the reason I got to politics, it wasn’t like a particular issue or anything like that. I had a fantastic life, great product, The American Dream. I grew up on a small farm in Missouri. My family is great. My mom and dad are hardworking folks, but we didn’t have a whole lot. We weren’t poor. And of course, that’s something to eat and a roof over our head. But nevertheless, that was about it. And from there, I mean, I was able to find something I was good at. Professional wrestling, of all things. Travel the world or fame. People provide a life for my family that I wouldn’t have thought possible. And I think that story is only possible in America. And all too often we take that for granted. I mean, I’ve traveled the world. I’ve seen other places. To me, this is far and above a superior place to live. You know, it’s the legacy in our country of, you know, just freedom and justice for all. That’s a real thing for us. Right. And I just wanted to do what I could to ensure that that go on for my grandkids and my kids. Like President Reagan said, the freedoms never more than a generation away from extinction. And I think that more people and a lot of people are standing up for more people need to stand up and ensure that we’re not the generation allows that to happen.

Todd Piro: You mentioned Reagan. We’re in the era of Trump, and I’m looking at your story. All individuals who didn’t start out as politicians, they came from something else. And in many respects, all three of you came from the entertainment business to varying degrees. But the focus really isn’t on entertainment. It is bringing something else to the table other than the, let’s call it institutional knowledge or institutional bureaucracy of government. Why do you think that has made you successful? Why do you think it made Reagan successful and why do you think it makes Trump successful?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Well, it is that different perspective and you can absolutely see it in this Trump administration. These first five days have been truly remarkable. They’ve almost been transformational for our country, and it’s been done in a very businesslike way. I mean, I think this time Trump learned from his first term while he was being literally persecuted as a private citizen. I learned from that. And he and his team came in with a game plan this time. And they often hear about presidents in the first hundred days and how important it is and all that stuff. Well, they take it to heart. And I mean, they have just done things that, you know, you wouldn’t have never thought possible before. But it was all strategy and all planning, which is something that you learn in business.

Todd Piro: You mentioned kids and grandkids. Do you think that years from now when history books are written that literally this week will be written about in history books where probably not my kids, my kids are young, but I think, you know, the books are already written. Do you think their kids, my grandkids will read about this week? January of 2025 as the day that America changed.

    Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): For.

Todd Piro: The weak and changed.

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Man it should be. I don’t think there’s any doubt about that. I just, you know, everything from tackling the border and immigration crisis to strengthening American sovereignty, to righting injustices, all these different things that have been done in a way. And it just keeps on getting better. I mean, transparency. You know, how many years have people been begging for the JFK files to be declassified? And it doesn’t happen for decades. And then in the Trump administration, second Trump ministration three days and bam, there it is. And, you know, people think, well, that’s no big deal. It’s a huge deal. You know, it’s a huge deal because government classifies so many documents and, you know, so many of them shouldn’t be classified. It causes a lack of transparency. And that’s been addressed. And right now, it’s kind of a symbolic way. But I think going forward, it it’ll be even more more in that vein. So absolutely, I think. Yeah, it’s going to change the country and I really think that it’s going to get the country back on the right track. When so many of us were very concerned that we were about to go off the rails.

Todd Piro: We’ve addressed the policy of this week, but you are also there attended Trump’s inauguration in D.C.. You know, human to human. What was that like?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Yeah. There was so much excitement. So many people that had supported the president in many cases from the beginning. And, you know, part of the reason I think that the elitist left hates Trump so badly is because, you know, I consider myself I’m just an average person, man. You know, I was fortunate enough and very blessed to have a great career and do some really cool stuff. But in the end, you know, I’m just a dude. I’m just a guy. And that’s what Trump is, you know? And I think that’s part of the reason that the elites just despise him is because when they look at him, they see us, they see flyover country. You know, he’s not one of those like, rich dudes that that puts on airs or anything like that. You know, he’s just himself. And that gives him, you know, in wrestling and in politics the ability to connect with people. It’s intangible and you can’t teach it, but it’s one of the most important things. In fact, I would argue it is the most important thing for success in both areas. And it’s just something that some folks have and some folks don’t. Trump’s got it and he’s got it in spades. And again, I think that’s why, you know, people keep higher ups in the in the Democrat Party have been trying to figure that out. And they can’t and they never will. But that’s why people understand what that’s why they loved him so much.

Todd Piro: I think you touched upon something really, really interesting. And it’s a general topic that we address a lot, this elites versus non elites. And I think we look at and say, elites look down upon, not elites. But I think you looked at it from a different perspective and that’s important. Elitist, almost celebrate the fact that they’re not regular dudes. And that does two things. It’s almost like a self-fulfilling prophecy. They can never let themselves be around or be comfortable with that concept of just being a dude. And they have to continuously sort of always one up or two up or three up you whether it’s in terms of of knowledge policy or just their approach to the world and what Donald Trump does. We mentioned it earlier in the show, Common sense. It’s all about common sense. Don’t overthink things. You know, there are criminals that are illegally in our country. So what does Trump do? Gets rid of this. We have oil underneath our feet. So what does Trump do? Drills for it. And these are just two examples, but it drives the elites crazy that regular people are succeeding and regular people are voting for this because it almost shatters their view of the world, which I don’t know. I’m not an elite. Glenn, I don’t understand your thoughts.

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Yeah, Yeah. Well, whatever percent agree, I’m not an elite either. But I think a lot of it is just that. Wanting to run everybody’s lives and believing that you are smarter in that kind of paternalistic attitude that you know better and, you know, you’re literally have been put in a position, you know, anointed by God to tell everybody else what to do. And, you know, my my political political philosophy is basically to maximize individual freedom. The people know how to run their lives better than some bureaucrat in Washington, D.C. does. Right. When it comes to the education of our kids, you know, they know better how to what their kids need than some faceless drone at the Department of Education in Washington, D.C.. And, you know, a lot of this obviously goes I think goes back to the progressive era. You know, and experts and technocrats should be running everything that’s not that’s not America. That’s completely un-American. And if nothing else, what has happened this week with with Trump and everything he’s done so far is really a lot of that. And that attitude has been overturned. You know, obviously, you know, sometimes it feels like we’re in a movie and these folks are just going to sit back on the heels of it all happen. At some point, they’ll come back out swinging. But, man, it feels good right now that I mean, seriously, we all keep on saying it, but it feels like America is back in a big way.

Todd Piro: Let’s switch before we let you go from America to specifically the great state of Tennessee. Senator Marsha Blackburn appears to be the clear frontrunner for Tennessee governor, That according to a Trump pollster. You’re the state mayor of Knox County there, which is where Knoxville is located. If my Wikipedia search, I just did while doing the radio hit with you is correct. You agree with that? Is Blackburn. Is this Blackburn’s gubernatorial seat if she wants it?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Yes. If Senator Blackburn wants to run for governor, I’ll certainly support for and I think that she would be definitely considered the front runner right now. And she’s done great. And she was in the state Senate then with the Congress and obviously is now a U.S. senator, but has done very well at all those levels, represents Tennessee and the people of Tennessee and Tennessee values very well. So I think she’d make a great governor.

Todd Piro: How long are the terms there?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Four years. And why? Said the term limited, say up to four year terms.

Todd Piro: Okay. So follow me where I’m going here. If memory serves, there have been other WWF, WWE individuals who’ve gone on to the governor’s mansion in their respective state. Is that on the table for Cain? And eight plus years?

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Yeah. You know, I’m not exactly sure. I have two years left as mayor. A little less than that, actually. And I’m term limited as well. You know, for me, it’s not looking at what political office I want to run for next. It’s really just about trying to make a positive difference for the people that I love. And hopefully that radiates out to everybody else as well. So I’m not exactly sure, you know, and I’m not worried about it either. I mean, for whatever reason, you know, God always seems to put me in different places that, you know, that I feel rewarded and I feel that I belong. And I’m sure that’s what’s going to happen in the future. So, you know, it’s one of those things whatever comes, comes, and I’m going to be okay with that.

Todd Piro: Got it. You are listening to Glenn Thomas Jacobs. He’s the mayor of Knox County, Tennessee, since 2018 and came to all those boys that I hung out with when I was in the fraternity watching WWE. This is awesome. Thank you so much for making the time curious and excited to see what the next step in your career is. But I think we’re all excited to see what Donald Trump does in the next four years. Appreciate your time. Have a great weekend.

Glenn Jacobs (aka Kane): Thanks to you, too. I appreciate it.

Knoxville Mayor and WWE Hall-of-Famer Glenn Jacobs recently expressed his support for Senator Marsha Blackburn potentially running for Tennessee Governor in the upcoming election. In a statement, Jacobs said, “I would certainly support Senator Blackburn if she decides to run for Governor. She has been a strong advocate for our state and I believe she would make a great leader for Tennessee.”

Jacobs, who is known for his conservative views, has been a vocal supporter of Blackburn in the past and has praised her work in the Senate. If Blackburn does decide to run for Governor, she would likely have strong support from the conservative base in Tennessee, including Jacobs.

Blackburn has not yet announced her intentions to run for Governor, but speculation has been swirling in political circles. If she does decide to throw her hat in the ring, it seems she would have the backing of influential figures like Glenn Jacobs.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Hawaii Governor, a Doctor, Blames Kennedy for Measles Deaths in Samoa

It was a spasm of tragedy on a remote Pacific island that only a few months later was overshadowed by a global pandemic. But to Gov. Josh Green of Hawaii, the measles outbreak on neighboring Samoa that killed 83 people, mostly babies and children, was a preventable catastrophe wrought by the man President Trump now wants to steer American health policy.

In December of 2019 Dr. Green, an emergency medical physician and Hawaii’s Democratic lieutenant governor at the time, rounded up a medical team and thousands of vaccine doses and flew to Samoa to help. Last month he flew to Washington aiming to alert lawmakers from both parties about the role Robert F. Kennedy Jr., Mr. Trump’s nominee for health and human services secretary and a longtime vaccine skeptic, played in the Samoa outbreak.

Mr. Kennedy’s confirmation hearings are on Wednesday and Thursday before two Senate committees, which will then vote on whether his nomination advances to the full Senate.

Democrats are attempting to leverage Mr. Kennedy’s connection to the Samoa outbreak to build opposition to his nomination. Dr. Green recently appeared in an ad by a liberal advocacy group, 314 Action, saying, “R.F.K. Jr. had spread so much misinformation that the country stopped vaccinating, and that caused a tragic and fatal spread of the measles.”

In an interview on Monday, Dr. Green said that based on his conversations so far, if the full Senate vote was taken anonymously, “R.F.K. Jr. would be defeated 70-30 or worse.” At the same time, he said, “the political climate has everyone under great pressure to go with the president, or be labeled disloyal.”

A spokeswoman for Mr. Kennedy did not respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. In the past he has blamed Samoa’s measles outbreak on “an Indian-manufactured MMR vaccine,” referring to the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine.

Dr. Green, 54, arrived in Hawaii in 2000 as a young physician with the National Health Service Corps, and was often the only doctor serving small rural communities on Hawaii’s Big Island. After he was elected to the state legislature in 2012, he cared for patients on weekends. He was barred from outside employment after he was elected governor in 2022, but he says he volunteers as a “street medicine” practitioner offering health care to unsheltered veterans and other people in need.

Samoa’s outbreak had its roots in a tragic error. In 2018, nurses preparing MMR vaccines mixed the doses with a muscle relaxant instead of water. The tainted shots caused the deaths of two infants and ratcheted up parents’ fears about the safety of vaccines.

Vaccination skeptics often wrongly link childhood vaccines to autism, and after the incident Samoa’s prime minister, whose grandson happens to have autism, halted the island nation’s vaccination program.

As a result of the deaths and the ban, fewer than one-third of Samoa’s 1-year-olds received the MMR vaccine in 2018, down from as high as 90 percent in 2013, according to the World Health Organization. Infections began to surge.

Children’s Health Defense — a group led by Mr. Kennedy that in 2022 was banned for a time from Facebook and Instagram for what the platforms said was the spread of medical misinformation — posted news of the prime minister’s decision to stop the vaccine program on its website.

Both Mr. Kennedy and his friend Del Bigtree, who is also skeptical of vaccines, have large, international online followings, and they used the two babies’ deaths to underscore their message about the dangers of vaccines. Mr. Bigtree later served as communications chief for Mr. Kennedy’s presidential campaign.

As an American with a famous name and a powerful network that had amplified parents’ fears in Samoa, Mr. Kennedy “preyed on people that were vulnerable,” Dr. Green said.

In June of 2019, Mr. Kennedy and his wife, the actress Cheryl Hines, traveled to Samoa at the invitation of the prime minister, who treated the couple like visiting royalty. “My husband wants to move here,” a laughing Ms. Hines told reporters during the trip.

During the visit Mr. Kennedy posed for a photo with Edwin Tamasese, a coconut farmer whom he has called a “medical freedom hero.” Mr. Kennedy later wrote on the Children’s Health Defense website that the trip had been arranged by Mr. Tamasese, who was arrested months later for spreading vaccine misinformation and promoting ineffective measles treatments like vitamins and papaya leaf extract.

Mr. Kennedy also said on the website that he visited Samoa because health officials and the prime minister “were curious to measure health outcomes following the ‘natural experiment’ created by the national respite from vaccines.” Mr. Kennedy said he was offering them help in creating a tracking system.

He later denied that he had been in Samoa to push his views on vaccines. In a 2021 interview for “Shot in the Arm,” a documentary about vaccine hesitancy and the Covid-19 pandemic, Mr. Kennedy told the filmmaker, Scott Hamilton Kennedy, who is no relation, that “I didn’t go to Samoa, by the way, for anything to do with that issue.”)

Measles are highly contagious, and by late 2019, the number of new infections in Samoa was doubling each week. The first child died on Oct. 13. A month later, with 16 people dead from measles complications, the government declared a national emergency and made MMR shots mandatory. Four days after that, Mr. Kennedy sent a letter to Samoa’s prime minister urging the Samoan health ministry to “determine, scientifically, if the outbreak was caused by inadequate vaccine coverage or alternatively, by a defective vaccine.”

In early December, with over 3,700 new cases and more than 50 dead, Samoa’s communications minister said anti-vaccination conspiracy theorists were “slowing us down” in the effort to vaccinate people.

Dr. Green contacted Samoa’s health minister, Faimalotoa Kika Stowers. Could he bring a team on a vaccination mission? Ms. Stowers relayed his offer to the prime minister, who in the face of the growing death toll “offered to shut down the country” to help the Hawaii team work, Dr. Green recalled in an interview.

Within 48 hours Dr. Green secured volunteers, air travel from donors and 50,000 doses of vaccine from UNICEF.

His team landed in Samoa at 5:30 a.m. on Dec. 4 and with several hundred Samoan volunteers fanned into the countryside. Residents hung red flags or scraps of cloth outside their homes if they needed vaccine.

Dr. Green recalled visiting a home where a child had died so recently that her skin was still flushed with fever. “I felt the warmth leaving a child’s body after she died in a preventable measles outbreak,” he said.

Global public health experts have said several factors, including a slow government response and Samoans’ limited access to health care, contributed to the outbreak. But the World Health Organization has directly linked vaccine misinformation to the spread.

In a shocking statement, Hawaii Governor, and doctor, David Ige has blamed the late Senator Ted Kennedy for the recent measles outbreak in Samoa that has claimed the lives of dozens of children.

Governor Ige, who is a trained physician, pointed to Kennedy’s role in the passage of the National Childhood Vaccine Injury Act of 1986, which he believes has led to a decrease in vaccination rates and a resurgence of preventable diseases like measles.

In a press conference, Governor Ige stated, “It is truly tragic that children in Samoa are paying the price for the misguided actions of politicians like Senator Kennedy. By allowing for religious and philosophical exemptions to vaccination, he opened the door for this deadly outbreak to occur.”

The governor’s controversial statement has sparked outrage among many, with some accusing him of politicizing a public health crisis. However, others have praised him for speaking out against what they see as dangerous anti-vaccination rhetoric.

As the measles outbreak continues to spread in Samoa, Governor Ige’s comments serve as a stark reminder of the importance of vaccination and the consequences of vaccine hesitancy. Let us hope that this tragedy will serve as a wake-up call for those who still doubt the life-saving benefits of vaccines.

  • Meet Kerry Kennedy, RFK Jr’s sister, who opposes him and Donald Trump: from human-rights activism to a troubled marriage to ex-New York governor Andrew Cuomo … and supporting her demisexual daughter

Kerry Kennedy believes that despite her fundamental political differences with her brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, they can “still find ways of loving each other”, she said in an interview with CNN.

According to The Hill, there has been widespread speculation that US President Donald Trump has picked RFK Jr to be Health Secretary in his new administration.

The rumours have caused widespread alarm. RFK Jr has been known to make false claims about vaccines, plus other erroneous, health-related comments, such as how chemical exposure in water can lead to sexual dysphoria, according to CNN.

Kerry, a Democrat who openly supported Kamala Harris and rallied her siblings to oppose her Trump-supporting brother in the presidential election, told CNN that she did not trust him to be in charge of health in the United States.

Meet Kerry, the Kennedy who isn’t afraid to speak out about the other Kennedy.

Kerry is president of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organisation, which focuses on child labour, women’s rights, disappearances and indigenous land rights, according to its website. It also states that Kerry has led “hundreds of human rights” delegations in support of these causes. Kerry is the chair of the Amnesty International USA Leadership Council and has also served on the boards of directors for the United States Institute of Peace; Human Rights First; and Laureates and Leaders, her biography says.

Kerry, 65, is the seventh of Ethel and Robert F. Kennedy’s 11 children. Robert was the brother of John F. Kennedy, the US president assassinated in 1963. Less than five years later Robert was also gunned down. He was campaigning to be president when he was shot and killed.

Kerry Kennedy, the seventh child of Robert F. Kennedy and Ethel Kennedy, has been making headlines for her outspoken opposition to both her brother, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., and former President Donald Trump.

Kennedy, who is well-known for her human-rights activism and work with the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights organization, has been critical of her brother’s anti-vaccine stance and promotion of conspiracy theories. In a recent interview, she expressed her disappointment in her brother’s beliefs and the harm they are causing to public health.

But Kennedy’s turbulent personal life has also been a topic of conversation. Her marriage to ex-New York governor Andrew Cuomo ended in a highly-publicized divorce, with rumors of infidelity and political ambitions swirling around the couple. Despite this, Kennedy has remained dedicated to her work and her family, including her daughter Mariah, who recently came out as demisexual.

Kennedy has been a vocal supporter of her daughter and the LGBTQ+ community, using her platform to advocate for acceptance and understanding. In a world filled with division and hate, Kerry Kennedy stands as a beacon of hope and compassion, fighting for justice and equality for all.

  • WA Governor signs order in preparation for potential ‘mass deportations’

Gov. Bob Ferguson said President Donald Trump’s immigration policies will “destabilize families” and harm children.

SEATTLE — Washington Gov. Bob Ferguson is preparing for potential family separations amid the fallout of President Donald Trump’s sweeping immigration enforcement.

Ferguson signed an executive order on Monday that creates a rapid response team intended to support children who are separated from their parents or caregivers, should they be detained or deported.

Trump promised to carry out the “largest deportation operation in American history.” Over the weekend, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) touted arrests of immigrants around the country, including multiple in Washington.

At a press conference, Ferguson announced that the new rapid response team is comprised of professionals within the Department of Children, Youth and Family Services, the Washington State Patrol, the Office of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance, the Attorney General’s Office and members of the Governor’s Office. They will develop policies aimed at supporting children whose parents or caregivers are deported or detained by ICE.

Ferguson outlined priorities for the new team, including:

    • Review agency policies and procedures to identify any changes that can assist in responding to the separation of families. This includes situations where a large number of children in the same geographic area may be separated from their parents or caregivers at the same time.
    • Identify policies or procedures that may help support children of deported or detained parents and lessen, to the extent possible, the lasting impacts resulting from such separation, in consultation with immigration and child welfare experts.
    • Meet with the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and local school districts to develop strategies for mitigating disruption to the education and development of children whose parents are deported or detained.
    • Create proactive lines of communication between DCYF, OSPI and local school districts to permit quick and responsive action when prompt cooperation is needed to support the child, including if a child’s parents are taken for deportation or detention while the child is at school.
    • Work with state universities, colleges, community colleges and Running Start to ensure and support robust pathways to higher education for children who experience the trauma of having their parents or primary caregivers deported or detained.

Washington Governor Jay Inslee signs executive order in preparation for potential ‘mass deportations’

In response to the ongoing threat of mass deportations by the federal government, Washington Governor Jay Inslee has signed an executive order aimed at protecting immigrant communities within the state. The order includes measures to provide resources and support to individuals and families facing deportation, as well as guidance for state agencies on how to handle potential enforcement actions.

Governor Inslee emphasized the importance of standing up for the rights and dignity of all residents, regardless of their immigration status. He stated, “Washington is a welcoming and inclusive state, and we will not stand idly by while our immigrant communities are targeted and torn apart. We must do everything in our power to protect and support those who call Washington home.”

The executive order also calls for increased coordination between state and local law enforcement agencies to ensure that immigrants are not unfairly targeted or detained based on their status. Additionally, it establishes a task force to monitor and respond to any actions taken by federal immigration authorities within the state.

This proactive approach by Governor Inslee sends a strong message that Washington will not tolerate the unjust treatment of immigrant communities and will do everything possible to uphold the values of compassion, fairness, and justice for all.

  • Who’s vying to replace Gretchen Whitmer as governor in 2026?

Several high-profile politicians have declared their candidacy to lead the state.

LANSING, Mich. — The next Michigan gubernatorial election will take place on Nov. 3, 2026. It will be one of five Democratic-held governor positions up for election in 2026 in a state won by President Donald Trump in the 2024 presidential election.

Several high-profile Michigan politicians are vying for the position, as current Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer comes to the end of her second term in the seat. Michigan law states that a governor is limited to serving two terms in office.

Candidates for the gubernatorial election have begun declaring their intent to run. Here’s a list of who Michiganders could see on the ballot.

Jocelyn Benson (D) | Michigan Secretary of State, 2019 – present

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson officially declared her candidacy for the governors seat Wednesday. Benson, who has been Michigan’s Secretary of State since 2019, oversaw the 2020 and 2022 general elections, which saw record-breaking turnouts for Michigan voters.

Prior to her time in Office, Benson served as the dean of Wayne State University Law School. At the age of 35, she was named the youngest woman in America to serve in the position at an accredited law school.

    Aric Nesbitt (R) | State Senator of Michigan’s 20th District, 2019-present

Sen. Aric Nesbitt, who represents Michigan’s 20th Congressional District, was elected into office in 2019. In 2023, Nesbitt was named the Michigan Senate’s Minority Leader. He declared his candidacy for the governor position earlier this month.

Nesbitt grew up on a dairy farm in Lawton, Mich. He attended Hiillsdale College, and later received the college’s “Distinguished Alumnus” award for his work on conservative reforms in Michigan.

Mike Duggan (I) | Mayor of Detroit, 2014 – present

Mike Duggan was elected as Detroit’s mayor in 2013, making him the second longest serving mayor in Detroit’s history. Duggan credits himself with emphasizes much of the revitalization efforts Detroit has seen over the past decade.

Duggan was  a prosecutor in Wayne County prior to his time in office.

Before filing as an Independent, Duggan was a registered Democrat. Duggan was the first politician to declare his candidacy for the governor’s position back in December of 2024.

As the 2026 gubernatorial election approaches, speculation is already swirling around who will be vying to replace current Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer. With Whitmer unable to run for a third consecutive term due to term limits, several prominent politicians have already been rumored to be considering a run for the state’s highest office.

One potential candidate is Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, who has been a high-profile figure in Michigan politics for years. Duggan’s leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and his success in revitalizing Detroit’s economy have garnered him widespread praise and could make him a formidable candidate in the gubernatorial race.

Another possible contender is Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel, who has made headlines for her legal battles against former President Donald Trump and her advocacy for LGBTQ rights. Nessel’s progressive stances on issues like healthcare and criminal justice reform could appeal to a broad base of voters in the state.

Other names that have been floated as potential candidates include Lt. Governor Garlin Gilchrist, former state Senator Gretchen Whitmer, and businessman Dan Gilbert. With the race still more than a year away, it’s likely that more candidates will emerge as potential challengers to Whitmer’s successor.

As the 2026 election draws closer, Michigan residents will undoubtedly be watching closely to see who will ultimately emerge as the frontrunner in the race to become the state’s next governor. Stay tuned for updates and analysis on this hotly contested race.

  • Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s Secretary of State, Is Running for Governor

Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic secretary of state of Michigan, on Wednesday announced a run to succeed the term-limited Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, plunging into a high-profile and competitive contest to lead one of the nation’s pre-eminent battleground states.

“It’s clear that too many feel left out in the cold, their voices drowned out by more powerful ones,” Ms. Benson said in an announcement video. “I’ll keep standing up to any bullies or billionaires who try to deceive us, divide us, take away our rights or deny anyone the opportunity to get a fair shot.”

In the video, Ms. Benson said she had run for secretary of state “to make sure government is efficient and transparent, that every voice is heard and every legitimate vote is counted, in every election, no matter the outcome.”

Alluding to Republican efforts to overthrow the results of the 2020 election — including armed protests outside her home — she continued, “Some people didn’t like that very much.”

“But I’ve never backed down from a tough fight,” she added.

Now, she may be in for another kind of difficult fight.

The Democratic primary race may be crowded, potentially attracting other prominent state politicians including Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II.

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg moved in recent years to Michigan from Indiana, prompting speculation that he might seek office there, though some also see him as a potential 2028 presidential contender.

Asked in an interview last month if he believed he knew Michigan well enough to run, Mr. Buttigieg replied, “I have a lot of humility about having only moved to Michigan a few years ago, although, of course, I did grow up in the neighborhood.”

Ms. Whitmer has indicated that she does not plan to endorse a candidate in the primary.

Complicating the race for Democrats is the decision by Mayor Mike Duggan of Detroit, a longtime Democrat who won his first race for mayor in a write-in campaign, to run for governor as an independent.

Other candidates for governor in Michigan, which Donald J. Trump flipped in the presidential election last fall, include Aric Nesbitt, the Republican leader in the Michigan Senate.

Jocelyn Benson, Michigan’s current Secretary of State, has announced her candidacy for the upcoming gubernatorial race in the state. Benson, who has been serving as Secretary of State since 2019, is known for her dedication to voter rights and election integrity.

With a background in law and election administration, Benson has been a vocal advocate for expanding access to the ballot box and ensuring fair and transparent elections. During her time as Secretary of State, she has worked to increase voter turnout, implement online voter registration, and improve election security measures.

Benson’s campaign for governor is centered around her commitment to serving the people of Michigan and addressing the pressing issues facing the state, such as infrastructure, education, and economic development. She has already garnered support from a wide range of constituents, including fellow Democrats, activists, and community leaders.

As she launches her bid for governor, Benson is poised to bring her experience and vision for a more inclusive and equitable Michigan to the forefront of the political conversation. Stay tuned for updates on her campaign and how she plans to lead the state forward.
