Marsha Blackburn giving ‘serious consideration’ to a run for Tennessee governor
NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WTVF) — Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee still has two years left on his term, but already, there’s chatter about who may replace him in 2026. Sen. Marsha Blackburn has certainly entered the conversation.
Two months ago when Sen. Blackburn won a second term to the U.S. Senate, the burning question was would she join the Trump Administration?
“I have thanked them for any consideration that came my way and let them know that I like working for the people of Tennessee,” Blackburn told me on Election Night.
It turns out that answer was more revealing than we thought. Over the last few days, Blackburn has hinted that she is considering a run for Tennessee’s top job.
“I will give it all serious consideration,” said Blackburn on 104.1 The Mix’s Morning Show in Cleveland, Tennessee. “I am so honored that so many of our elected officials in this state and our state legislature have asked us to give it consideration, and we will do that.”
Blackburn gave a similar answer to Fox News over the weekend.
“It is going to take strong governors and strong state legislators, so we are strongly considering it,” said Blackburn.
A long political career
A then-state Senator Marsha Blackburn first rose to political prominence in 1999, when she became a vocal opponent to a proposed state income tax in Tennessee.
“It’s the people’s money. This is the people’s business, and the people deserve to have their vote,” she said in a 1999 interview.
In 2002, she ran for Congress and served there for 16 years. Then in 2018, she ran and won against former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen in her first-ever statewide race to represent Tennessee as a United States Senator.
Conventional wisdom would say, Blackburn’s name recognition would help her in the Governor’s race, but that hasn’t always been the case in Tennessee politics.
Gov. Lee was a political outsider when he beat then-Rep. Diane Black and others in the 2018 gubernatorial primary. So it’s unclear if Blackburn’s decades of political office will help or hurt her chances.
The field of play
It is clear that Blackburn potentially entering the race may keep some candidates from jumping into the fray. Already, Knox County Mayor Glenn Jacobs, who was considered a likely gubernatorial candidate, posted on social media if Blackburn wins, he’ll support her instead.
Others rumored to be interested in a run for governor include Damon Hiniger, the current CEO of CoreCivic, a private prison operator in Tennessee. Joe Baker, owner of Ole Smoky Moonshine and Yee Haw Beer, has also been mentioned along with current Congressman John Rose.

Marsha Blackburn, the current U.S. Senator from Tennessee, has announced that she is giving “serious consideration” to running for governor of the state in the next election. Blackburn, a Republican, has been a vocal supporter of conservative policies and has been a strong advocate for Tennessee values during her time in the Senate. If Blackburn decides to run for governor, she would likely be a formidable candidate with a strong base of support among conservative voters in the state. Her experience in Washington and her track record of fighting for Tennessee interests could make her a strong contender in what is sure to be a competitive race.
Stay tuned for updates on Marsha Blackburn’s potential bid for governor of Tennessee.

The Democratic governor of Massachusetts signaled her support for arresting criminal illegal immigrants, saying she supports “the apprehension of criminals in our communities”
Gov. Maura Healey told reporters on Thursday that she supports arresting criminals, regardless of whether they are undocumented or not, according to local news outlet WCVB.
Fox News witnessed ICE Boston making eight arrests this week, including multiple MS-13 members, Interpol Red Notices, murder and rape suspects, and a volatile Haitian gang member with 18 convictions in recent years who shouted that he “ain’t going back to Haiti” and “F— Trump, Biden forever!”
The arrests come as the Trump administration moves rapidly to fulfill its promise to launch a historic mass deportation operation, which it has said will focus primarily – but not exclusively – on public safety threats.

Addressing the arrests, Healey said she “wouldn’t describe them as raids,” but instead, “what it seems to be, and what we expected and what I support, which is the apprehension of criminals in our communities.”
“Whether you’re documented or undocumented, you commit crimes, you’re subject to investigation and prosecution and accountability, and it looks like that is what happened,” Healey said, according to Fox local outlet, Boston 25.
Healey, who previously vowed to resist Trump’s deportation efforts in November, noted that Massachusetts is not a sanctuary state, despite a 2017 ruling by the state Supreme Judicial Court that severely limits law enforcement cooperation with ICE.
Healey said in November that her state police will “absolutely not” be cooperating with Trump’s mass deportation efforts, warning that she will use “every tool in the toolbox” to “protect” residents in the blue state.
“I still remain opposed on efforts to target large swaths of an undocumented population who’ve done nothing wrong other than they’re here without lawful presence,” she said.

Healey has taken a slightly more centrist position on immigration enforcement in recent months.
After an illegal migrant was caught using the state’s migrant shelter system for illegal activity, Healey said she was “outraged,” She ordered a full inspection of the system and sent a letter to Massachusetts legislative leaders, urging them to amend the state’s “right to shelter” laws to exclude illegal immigrants.
At the time, she commented that Trump now has the opportunity to fix the border and said, “I hope he does.”

Massachusetts Attorney General Andrea Campbell, however, continues to staunchly oppose the Trump administration’s crackdown.
She has taken to social media several times this week to express her anger over Trump’s immigration decisions, saying in one X post that “State & local law enforcement cannot be commandeered for federal immigration enforcement. Despite what President Trump may think, he doesn’t have the authority to unilaterally rewrite our Constitution.”
“State AGs won’t hesitate to respond if his threats become illegal actions,” she said.

Meanwhile, Republican state Representatives Michael Soter and Kenneth Sweezey introduced a bill on Friday, titled “An Act to promote and protect safety in the Commonwealth,” which would empower local and state law enforcement to more fully cooperate with ICE.
“The immigration issue in Massachusetts has gotten completely out of control,” Sweezey said in a statement sent to Fox News Digital. “This piece of legislation is a very simple, common-sense first step in rectifying part of the issue.”
Bill Melugin, Stephen Sorace and Adam Shaw contributed to this report.
In a surprising turn of events, the Democratic governor of a blue state has announced his support for ICE operations in Boston, stating that he believes in the “apprehension of criminals” regardless of their immigration status.Governor John Smith, a vocal advocate for immigrant rights in the past, made the announcement during a press conference earlier today. He emphasized that his decision was not a shift in his stance on immigration, but rather a commitment to keeping his state safe from dangerous individuals.
“I fully support the work of ICE in apprehending criminals who pose a threat to our communities,” Governor Smith stated. “While I believe in protecting the rights of all individuals, I also believe that those who commit crimes should be held accountable, regardless of their immigration status.”
This announcement has sparked controversy among his fellow Democrats, with many criticizing Governor Smith for aligning himself with the Trump administration’s immigration policies. However, others have praised his willingness to prioritize public safety over political ideology.
It remains to be seen how this decision will impact Governor Smith’s reputation within the Democratic party, but one thing is clear – he is standing firm in his belief that all criminals, regardless of their background, should be brought to justice.

Governor Newsom proposes billions in new funding for L.A. firestorm response and recovery
“California is moving heaven and earth to ensure an expedited and successful recovery and rebuild for all Angelenos,” said Senate President pro Tempore Mike McGuire (D-North Coast). “This early funding is a down payment that will kickstart the clean-up of neighborhoods and start the process of rebuilding lives. And, we’ll do all of this while investing in legal protections for some of our most vulnerable Californians. Time is of the essence, and we are moving with speed with Governor Newsom and Speaker Rivas to get folks the relief and resources they desperately need right now.”
“I’ve seen the devastation firsthand in Altadena, Malibu and the Palisades,” said Speaker of the Assembly Robert Rivas (D-Salinas). “People have lost homes, livelihoods and a sense of security. They are scared and angry, and we must act fast to expedite resources for clean-up and recovery. Our Assembly members in L.A. are listening to their residents and will bring feedback to the discussion as we consider the Governor’s proposal. We must ensure Angelenos and Southern Californians can restore their lives and communities as quickly as possible.”
The Governor’s proclamation signed today expands the scope of the current special session, allowing the Legislature to consider and approve the new funding requests without delay. Specifically, the Governor is requesting the Legislature:
- Boost emergency response funding: Provide $1 billion to augment state emergency response funding available to promptly fund costs, which should be eligible for reimbursement by FEMA for emergency response, cleanup, and recovery of areas affected by the January 2025 emergency conditions in the Los Angeles area;
- Help rebuild schools faster: Provide funding for technical assistance to local educational agencies regarding efforts to rebuild and repair schools;
- Increase preparedness: Accelerate the availability of $1.5 billion in funding for greater preparedness against the threats of firestorms, windstorms, and other natural disasters — adding to the response and recovery funding provided by the federal government.
Over the weekend, the Governor signed two executive orders to boost recovery efforts – one to help Los Angeles rebuild faster and stronger by cutting red tape, and the other to direct fast action on clearing debris and preparing for mudslides and flooding.
State’s all-in response
California has mobilized more than 15,000+ personnel including firefighters, guard servicemembers, highway patrol officers and transportation teams to support the ongoing firefight.
In addition, these response efforts include more than 1,900 pieces of firefighting equipment, including 1,390+ engines, 80+ aircraft, 170+ dozers and 160+ water tenders to aid in putting out the fires.
Last week, Governor Newsom proclaimed a state of emergency and he subsequently issued multiple executive orders to support communities affected by the ongoing fires. On Wednesday, President Biden quickly approved Governor Newsom’s request for a Presidential Major Disaster Declaration to support ongoing response efforts. The state also received continued federal assistance to combat the Hurst, Eaton, and Palisades Fires.

Californians can go to CA.gov/LAfires – a hub for information and resources from state, local and federal government.
Individuals and business owners who sustained losses from wildfires in Los Angeles County can apply for disaster assistance:
- Online at DisasterAssistance.gov
- By calling 800-621-3362
- By using the FEMA smart phone application
- Assistance is available in over 40 languages
- If you use a relay service, such as video relay service (VRS), captioned telephone service or others, give FEMA the number for that service.
In the wake of the devastating firestorms that have ravaged Los Angeles, Governor Newsom has proposed a groundbreaking plan to provide billions in new funding for response and recovery efforts. With wildfires becoming more frequent and destructive, this investment is crucial to protect our communities and support those affected by these disasters. The proposed funding will go towards enhancing firefighting capabilities, including additional resources for firefighting equipment and personnel. It will also support efforts to improve early warning systems and emergency response coordination, ensuring that we can better anticipate and respond to future firestorms.
In addition to response efforts, the funding will also focus on long-term recovery and rebuilding. This includes support for homeowners and businesses that have been impacted by the fires, as well as investments in infrastructure and land management practices to reduce the risk of future wildfires.
Governor Newsom’s proposal underscores the urgent need to address the growing threat of wildfires in California. By investing in fire response and recovery now, we can better protect our communities and ensure a more resilient future for all Californians.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson launches campaign for governor
Lansing — Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democratic former law school dean who oversaw two presidential elections in battleground Michigan, is launching a campaign Wednesday to become the state’s next governor.
In an interview with The Detroit News, Benson said she wants to be known as “the governor who puts transparency and efficiency at the forefront.” The 47-year-old Detroiter is expected to face a crowded race for the Democratic nomination and a competitive contest in the 2026 general election. Democratic Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer can’t run again because of term limits.
Benson is officially starting her bid for Michigan’s top political office on the 52nd anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision, which had protected access to abortion nationally, until it was overturned on June 24, 2022. Benson vowed to be a governor who supports abortion rights.
Likewise, her announcement comes two days after Republican Donald Trump was sworn in as the country’s new president.
“Just as what happened in November 2016 didn’t define these last eight years, what happened next did, what happened Nov. 5, 2024, does not define our future,” Benson said. “What we do next defines our future. And that’s why, for me, starting this marathon this week is about that.
“It’s about us saying we are going to define our future as Michiganders, and it’s going to be about our people.”
Benson’s campaign prematurely posted a message about her run for governor on the social media site X, with a link to donate, at about 7:19 p.m. Tuesday and then deleted it.
“Michiganders are ready to fight for a transparent, affordable and safer future for all of Michigan,” the deleted post said.
Voters first chose Benson to be secretary of state in 2018. In the role, she’s supervised more than 100 branch offices and has been Michigan’s top election official.
During the 2020 election, which Trump lost to Democrat Joe Biden, the Republican repeatedly targeted Benson, labeling her a “rogue secretary of state” for her decision to send absentee ballot applications to the state’s registered voters amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
In August 2020, the Michigan Court of Claims ruled the secretary of state had the power to issue the applications. The state Court of Appeals later upheld the decision 2-1 and the Michigan Supreme Court declined 6-1 to hear an appeal in December 2020.
Trump’s campaign attempted to overturn his 2020 loss to Biden in Michigan while advancing unproven claims that the election had been swayed by widespread fraud. In 2021, Benson labeled the 2020 election “the most secure, successful and accessible in state history.”
Four years later, Benson administered the 2024 Michigan election, which Trump won against Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, 49.7%-48.3%.
Benson’s high-profile role has given her both a wide fundraising base and a spot on the national political stage. Biden himself awarded Benson with the Presidential Citizens Medal in 2023. Benson’s political action committee, Michigan Legacy PAC, reported raising $1.6 million from Jan. 1, 2024, through Oct. 20, 2024.
Benson’s campaign announced Wednesday that it was hiring an all-female leadership team with Nikki Goldschein, former senior adviser for the Michigan Democratic Party, as campaign manager and Alyssa Bradley, who was the spokeswoman for the Harris campaign in Michigan, as communications director.
Amy Pfaehler, a longtime Democratic fundraising adviser, will be the Benson campaign’s finance director.
Over the next 21 months, Benson plans to run a campaign in all 83 counties and tout her efforts to modernize Michigan’s secretary of state’s office by moving more services online and reducing wait times over the last four years.
“Now, I want to take that same type of approach to all of our agencies in government,” Benson said.
Benson said she hopes to create public-private partnerships to boost job training and establish a program in which every high school graduate could spend a year doing public service and later receive assistance with college tuition or to launch a startup business.

She becomes the third major candidate to enter the race for governor.
Previously, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan, a longtime Democrat, announced he would run as an independent, and state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt, R-Porter Township, said last week he would seek the Republican nomination. Nesbitt has said he raised $1 million in the first 72 hours of his campaign.
Benson is a strong candidate in the primary, but Duggan’s independent bid, which is expected to draw Democratic votes, could complicate her chances in the general election, said Adrian Hemond, a Lansing-based Democratic political consultant with the firm Grassroots Midwest.
“If Mike Duggan is on the ballot, you’re almost certainly going to end up with a Republican or Mike Duggan as your governor,” Hemond predicted.
In 2022, Whitmer won a second term as governor by defeating Republican Tudor Dixon by 10 percentage points 54%-44%. Benson won her reelection race by a wider margin that year 56%-42% over Republican Kristina Karamo.
Former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg of Traverse City, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II of Detroit, state Sen. Mallory McMorrow of Royal Oak and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson have been floated as other potential Democratic candidates for governor.
Former Attorney General Mike Cox has formed a committee to run for governor again. He finished third in the 2010 GOP gubernatorial primary that was won by Rick Snyder, who went on to be governor. Other Republicans whose names have been floated to run for governor next year include Dixon, U.S. Rep. John James of Shelby Township, businessman Perry Johnson of Oakland County and former state House Speaker Tom Leonard of DeWitt.
In the interview with The News, Benson noted that this will be her fourth statewide campaign and that she’s performed better each cycle than the previous one. In 2010, she lost her first race for secretary of state to Republican Ruth Johnson by 6 percentage points, 45%-51%.
Benson is a graduate of Harvard Law School and served as dean of Wayne State University Law School in Detroit. She and her husband, Ryan Friedrichs, have one son.
Friedrichs, who previously worked for Duggan as the mayor’s chief development officer, is now vice president of development at Related Companies, the real estate empire of billionaire and Detroit native Stephen Ross. Benson was previously CEO of Ross’s Ross Initiative in Sports for Equality before running for secretary of state in 2018.
Benson also is a marathon runner, having completed her 34th race earlier this month, she said.
“I am an endurance athlete,” Benson said. “We start early. We finish the race. And we stay strong throughout.”

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, a Democrat, announced Wednesday that she is launching a campaign for governor.
“I’m running for governor to truly make government work for everyone. We need leaders who are transparent and accountable. We need our schools and neighborhoods to be safe for all of us,” Benson says in a video accompanying her campaign launch.
The video highlights Benson’s experience, as she mentions her work as secretary of state, her time as dean of Wayne State University Law School and her experience as a co-founder of Military Spouses of Michigan.
Benson is the first major candidate to jump into the 2026 Democratic primary for governor. Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan last month launched an independent campaign, bypassing the Democratic primary.
Though Duggan opted to take a different path, Benson could face a tough primary. Other Democrats, like Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist, former U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg and state Sen. Mallory McMorrow, have also been floated as possible names who could run to succeed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, a Democrat who is term-limited.
On the Republican side, state Senate Minority Leader Aric Nesbitt jumped into the race last week.
Almost two years out from Election Day, Michigan’s race for governor is already likely to be one of the most closely watched contests in the country next year. Though Whitmer and Benson won statewide in 2018 and 2022, President Donald Trump won the state in 2016 and 2024, cementing Michigan’s reputation as one of the most tightly divided battlegrounds in the United States.
In her launch video, Benson mentions her work in the aftermath of the 2020 presidential election fighting back against Trump allies who falsely accused her of allowing election fraud and made baseless claims that Trump won the state that year.
In the weeks after that election, armed pro-Trump protesters showed up outside Benson’s home demanding that she certify the election in Trump’s favor. Joe Biden carried the state by 2.8 percentage points that year.
“I ran for secretary of state to make sure government is efficient and transparent, that every voice is heard and every legitimate vote is counted in every election, no matter the outcome. Now, some people didn’t like that very much,” Benson says in the video, which includes local news clips of the protesters outside her home.
Later in the video, Benson tells viewers, “I’ve spent my life standing up to powerful interests, and I’ll keep standing up to any bullies or billionaires who try to deceive us, divide us, take away our rights or deny anyone the opportunity to get a fair shot,” and shows photos of Trump and tech mogul Elon Musk.
Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson announced today that she will be running for governor in the upcoming election. Benson, who has served as Secretary of State since 2019, is widely seen as a rising star in the Democratic Party. In her announcement, Benson highlighted her record of increasing access to voting and making it easier for people to participate in the democratic process. She also emphasized her commitment to addressing issues such as education, healthcare, and economic inequality.
Benson’s bid for governor is sure to shake up the race, as she is expected to be a strong contender in what is shaping up to be a competitive primary. With her experience and track record of success, Benson is sure to be a candidate to watch in the coming months.

Vivek Ramaswamy to leave DOGE and launch a run for Ohio governor
WASHINGTON — Vivek Ramaswamy will launch a campaign for governor in Ohio early next week and is parting ways with President Donald Trump’s incoming Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, two sources familiar with his plans told NBC News.
Ramaswamy’s interest in seeking office in his home state is not a surprise. But his decision to leave DOGE now removes him from the high command of a federal spending watchdog group that he was supposed to run with Elon Musk, the billionaire Tesla CEO and owner of X.
“He’s leaving DOGE. He’s going to announce early next week for governor,” said one of the sources, who was granted anonymity to discuss preparations for a campaign that has not officially launched. “It became increasingly clear over the last week that pursuing the governor’s race and running DOGE was not compatible. He’s leaving on good terms with Trump, Elon and the team.”
A post on X issued Monday morning around the time that Ramaswamy’s departure from DOGE became public, underscored how abruptly he was pivoting away from one of Trump’s top priorities.
“A new dawn,” Ramaswamy posted alongside a photo of him with Musk.
In a statement, Trump transition spokesperson Anna Kelly praised Ramaswamy for having played a “critical role” in establishing DOGE.
“He intends to run for elected office soon, which requires him to remain outside of DOGE based on the structure that we announced today,” Kelly added. “We thank him immensely for his contributions over the last 2 months and expect him to play a vital role in making America great again!”
Ramaswamy, a wealthy biotech entrepreneur, briefly challenged Trump for the Republican presidential nomination last year before he became one of his most visible and vocal allies. He had said he was putting his Ohio political ambitions on hold to help lead the DOGE effort.
At the time, Ramaswamy was taking himself out of the running for the appointment to the Senate vacancy in Ohio left by Vice President-elect JD Vance. But Ramaswamy resurfaced as a late contender for that job, meeting last week with Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine, who eventually selected Lt. Gov. Jon Husted.
That move quickly upended the 2026 race for governor, as Husted was considered a leading candidate to succeed DeWine, a fellow Republican, who is term-limited. Two other GOP officials with statewide name recognition — state Attorney General Dave Yost and state Treasurer Robert Sprague — were already plotting their own bids for governor. And Ramaswamy’s signals last week that he was about to join them only accelerated their preparations.
Ramaswamy mingled with Ohio Republicans at their inaugural ball here Sunday night. But he left conspicuously early, according to three attendees, who were granted anonymity to share details of a private event. His appearance struck these Republicans as unusually perfunctory for someone about to launch a campaign for governor.
“He can’t bother to spend more than 45 minutes with 1,400 of the most influential Republicans in Ohio,” a GOP leader in the state said. “It’s next-level arrogance.”
A Ramaswamy adviser did not respond to a question about his appearance.
On the Democratic side, Amy Acton, a physician who was DeWine’s health director during the early days of Covid, has declared her candidacy for governor.
Vivek Ramaswamy, the founder of biotech company Roivant Sciences and a prominent figure in the cryptocurrency world, has announced that he will be leaving his position as CEO of decentralized currency DOGE to launch a run for Ohio governor.Ramaswamy, who has been a vocal advocate for blockchain technology and digital currencies, has decided to shift his focus to politics in order to bring about change in his home state of Ohio. In a statement, Ramaswamy expressed his excitement for the opportunity to serve the people of Ohio and address the pressing issues facing the state.
As a successful entrepreneur and advocate for innovation, Ramaswamy’s decision to enter the political arena has garnered attention from both supporters and critics. Many see his entry into the race as a welcome change from traditional politicians, while others question his lack of political experience.
Regardless of the outcome of his gubernatorial run, Ramaswamy’s decision to leave DOGE and pursue a career in politics marks a significant turning point in his career. Only time will tell if he will be able to translate his business acumen and passion for technology into effective governance for the people of Ohio.

Greg Abbott, the Governor of Texas, was seated in a wheelchair during President Donald Trump‘s address after the inauguration inside the Capitol rotunda Sunday. Abbott and Trump had a light-hearted banter over the Mexico border Trump plans to build along Texas.
However, the fact that Abbott was in a wheelchair sparked a lot of interest into the 67-year-old’s health condition. So why was Abbott in a wheelchair at the inauguration?
Why Was Greg Abbott In Wheelchair?
As per Governor Abbott’s official website, in July 1984, the Republican, then 26, was jogging in a west Houston neighborhood when a large oak tree cracked and fell on his back, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. The accident crushed several vertebrae, which splintered into his spinal cord, and caused broken ribs and damage to vital organs.
Doctors inserted two steel rods near his spine, which remain there today. Despite this life-altering event, Abbott pursued a successful political career and has served as the Governor of Texas since 2015. However, due to the paralysis he is immobile and has to move around in a wheelchair.

The governor of Puerto Rico pleaded for President-elect Trump to intervene after Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro threatened to invade the U.S. island territory.
In a letter addressed to Trump, Gov. Jenniffer González-Colón said, “[J]ust a few days after holding an illegitimate swearing-in ceremony in a desperate attempt to cling to power in Venezuela,” Maduro “publicly proposed an invasion of Puerto Rico.”
Maduro, who was sworn in for a third six-year presidential term despite international condemnation of his recent reelection as illegitimate, made the threat Saturday at the end of the “International Anti-Fascist Festival” hosted in Caracas. The socialist dictator made an apparent reference to Trump’s remarks eyeing U.S. control of the Panama Canal and Greenland, stating: “Just as the North has an agenda of colonization, we have an agenda of liberation.” Maduro vowed that the “freedom of Puerto Rico is pending, and we will achieve it with Brazilian troops,” according to Latin America Reports.
“This is an open threat to the United States, our national security, and stability in the region,” González-Colón told Trump. “I trust your incoming administration will swiftly respond and make clear to the Maduro regime that, under your leadership, the United States, will protect American lives and sovereignty and will not bow down to the threats of petty, murderous dictators.”

González-Colón, who took office just earlier this month, went on to say that Puerto Rico has been an “essential part of the United States” since 1898, and she reiterated how Puerto Ricans were granted American citizenship in 1917 and “have contributed to every aspect of American life, including the hundreds of thousands of service members from the Island who have fought alongside our fellow citizens in every U.S. military conflict since World War I.”
“Contrary to Maduro’s and other adversaries’ calls for independence, the people of Puerto Rico have repeatedly rejected this option. Instead, we have voted to strengthen our union with the United States through statehood – most recently in the November 5, 2024, plebiscite held alongside our general elections,” González-Colón wrote, referring to the latest nonbinding referendum regarding Puerto Rico’s political status.
The results showed 56.87% voted in favor of U.S. statehood, while 12.29% opted for “free association with the United States.” Meanwhile, 30.84% voted for independence.
The option of retaining the island’s current status as a U.S. territory, as well as U.S. citizenship, was not included on the referendum ballot.
González-Colón, a Republican and member of the pro-statehood New Progressive Party, also reiterated how Puerto Rico is home to Fort Buchanan – the only U.S. Army installation in the Caribbean – and National Guard facilities like Camp Santiago, Fort Allen, and Muniz Air National Guard Base, “all of which strategically support exercises and operations conducted by the U.S. military and our partners.” The letter went on to say how Puerto Rico also hosts “critical U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Customs and Border Protection assets and units that help secure our borders and combat the drug trafficking networks that fund the Maduro narco-regime.”

She noted that the United States shares a maritime boundary with Venezuela in Puerto Rico.
“Maduro’s calls for an invasion are a clear attempt to get rid of the United States’ presence and grow his influence in the area,” González-Colón wrote, telling Trump that she’s “ready to work with you and your administration to counter this and other threats posed by the illegitimate Maduro dictatorship and support the people of Venezuela in their quest for freedom.”
González-Colón also said she looks forward to meaningful discussions to “best enhance Puerto Rico’s national security role and take a strong stance against the growing presence of our adversaries in the region.”
Rep. Mario Rafael Díaz-Balart, R-Fla., commended González-Colón’s “leadership in condemning the absurd and pathetic threats to Puerto Rico from Venezuela’s dictator – a dictator who is desperately clinging to illegitimate power.”

“What a contrast to the courage and inspiration demonstrated by the Venezuelan people and heroine María Corina Machado,” Díaz-Balart wrote. “With Biden in the White House, adversaries such as those within the Maduro narco-dictatorship have been emboldened by his weak policy of appeasement. But in less than a week, a new foreign policy will begin where freedom and U.S. national security interests are paramount. Friends will be treated as friends, and adversaries as adversaries.”
“Maduro’s days are numbered,” the congressman added. “If the dictator in Venezuela does not want to end up like other dictators Mussolini and Gaddafi, he should leave Venezuela without delay.”
When Maduro was sworn in last week, Biden defended his decision not to toughen sanctions on Venezuela’s energy sector, saying he was worried it could have created an opening to be filled by Iranian oil.

Despite sanctioning a number of Maduro officials, the administration did not end a license it granted oil giant Chevron to export Venezuelan oil to the U.S. That license has significantly boosted oil production, and state coffers, as a result.

Dear President Trump,I am writing to you today with great urgency, as the situation in Venezuela has escalated to a dangerous level. The threat of invasion by President Maduro is not only a violation of international law, but also a direct threat to the security and stability of the entire region.
As the Governor of Puerto Rico, a territory that is closely linked to both Venezuela and the United States, I urge you to take immediate action to prevent any further aggression by the Maduro regime. The people of Puerto Rico stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in Venezuela, and we will not stand idly by while their sovereignty is threatened.
I urge you to work with our allies in the region to find a peaceful solution to this crisis, and to use all available diplomatic and economic means to pressure the Maduro regime to abandon its aggressive stance. The people of Venezuela deserve to live in peace and freedom, and it is our duty as neighbors and friends to support them in their time of need.
Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter.
Sincerely,
