  • Steph Curry, Moses Moody graded in Warriors loss to Suns

Well, that sure was ugly. The Golden State Warriors shot just 37.5% from the field on Friday, falling back to earth with a one-sided, 130-105 loss to the Phoenix Suns. Whatever momentum and confidence they built on Wednesday in defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder evaporated without a trade on Friday at the Chase Center.

Now I must, unfortunately, grade the players. As always, grades are based on my expectations for each player, with a “B” grade representing the average performance for that player.

Note: True-shooting percentage (TS) is a scoring efficiency metric that accounts for threes and free throws. Entering Friday’s games, league-average TS was 57.4%.

    Andrew Wiggins

    31 minutes, 17 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 steals, 1 block, 1 foul, 6-for-20 shooting, 1-for-5 threes, 4-for-5 free throws, 38.3% TS, -26

A weird game from Wiggins. He was one of the most active Warriors in so many phases, as he led the team in rebounds and assists, all without turning the ball over. And I was pretty impressed with his defense on Kevin Durant.

He also could not buy a bucket, and while he was more than happy to hoist shot after shot, he didn’t seem very interested in trying to get good shots. It’s hard to knock a guy too much for shooting inefficiently when everyone around him was an offensive zombie, but it’s also hard to give a guy too much credit when he took almost as many shots as any two of his teammates combined, and made them at a ghastly clip.

    In summation … shrug.

    Grade: B-
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in points and rebounds, led the team in assists, worst plus/minus on the team.

    Gary Payton II

    12 minutes, 3 points, 3 rebounds, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 1-for-6 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 1-for-2 free throws, 21.8% TS, -11

Payton got the start and played some pretty strong defense on Devin Booker. He also missed a bunch of buckets at the rim, which is rare for him, and ultimately his lack of offense was too costly to allow his defense to stay on the floor.

    Grade: C

    Quinten Post

    19 minutes, 9 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 2 fouls, 3-for-9 shooting, 2-for-4 threes, 1-for-1 free throws, 47.7% TS, -17

Post got a nice show of confidence by remaining in the starting lineup after Wednesday’s clunker. And he was much, much better in this one. He was a much bigger force in the paint, gobbling up rebounds and playing decent defense without fouling.

He’s still learning how to score at the rim, though, as he was just 1-for-5 inside the arc in this game. The finishing ability will definitely come, though: he has good moves in the post to get clean looks, and he has great touch. It seems he’s just struggling a little bit with the increased size and speed of the NBA game, which is understandable for a player who entered the game having played just 108 total minutes in his career.

    Grade: B
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in rebounds.

    Buddy Hield

    19 minutes, 13 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 1 block, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 5-for-7 shooting, 3-for-5 threes, 92.9% TS, -9

It seems like the Warriors game plan was run, run, run, and no one took that to heart quite like Hield did. It seemed like every time he touched the ball he was rushing up the court as quickly as he could. It was energy and effort that the team sorely needed and, sadly, could not match.

It also led to him finally catching fire on offense, and he was probably the team’s best player in the first half, and definitely their best shooter.

It got a little ugly for him in the second half, but I can’t blame him too much since he was pressing out of desperation.

    Grade: B+

    Steph Curry

    31 minutes, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 blocks, 2 turnovers, 1 foul, 5-for-14 shooting, 1-for-6 threes, 3-for-3 free throws, 45.7% TS, -18

For the second game in a row, Curry was held scoreless in the first quarter, and was a total non-factor in the first half. Unfortunately, he didn’t have a second-half turnaround on Friday like he did on Wednesday.

It’s certainly not time to question whether Curry is falling off a little. But it is becoming clear that, between the roster’s issues, the offensive burden he carries, and his age, we’ve reached an unfortunate point where the Warriors usually need Curry to be the best player on the court to have a chance to win, and he’s not able to be that player as often as he once was.

There’s no shame in getting outplayed by Durant and Booker in one game. But the Warriors just don’t have many paths to victory when that happens. A tough game for the Chef.

    Grade: C-

    Kevon Looney

    15 minutes, 2 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 3 fouls, 1-for-2 shooting, 0-for-1 free throws, 41.0% TS, -1

A really strong defensive game for Looney, even though he didn’t bring Wednesday’s offensive excellence with him. He just didn’t impact the game all that much, but the defense really was impressive, minus the fouls.

    Grade: B
Post-game bonus: Tied for the best plus/minus on the team.

    Gui Santos

    19 minutes, 5 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 2 fouls, 1-for-3 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 3-for-4 free throws, 52.5% TS, -4

My favorite sequence in the game involved Santos. He took Durant one-on-one, crossed him over, blew by him easily, and laid the ball in. About 10 seconds later, Durant pulled up for a three directly in Santos’ face, and drained in, then gave the youngster a smack on the butt. It seemed a fun and competitive show of respect from the former Warrior to the current one.

    Grade: B-

    Moses Moody

    24 minutes, 17 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, 1 foul, 5-for-10 shooting, 4-for-7 threes, 3-for-5 free throws, 69.7% TS, -6

A fantastic Moody game. He had some critical threes to help keep the Warriors in the game early on, and was one of the few players who brought energy and effort all night long. The He played half the game, and the Warriors were outscored by six points when he was on the court and 19 points when he wasn’t. That feels about right.

    Grade: A
Post-game bonus: Tied for the team lead in points.

    Dennis Schröder

    21 minutes, 5 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, 1 block, 1 turnover, 4 fouls, 2-for-8 shooting, 1-for-5 threes, 0-for-2 free throws, 28.2% TS, -13

I thought Schröder played pretty well everywhere except scoring. And it was a tough watch there, as the Suns dared him to shoot threes, which he obliged, but without success. Strong game elsewhere, though.

    Grade: B-

    Brandin Podziemski

    22 minutes, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 5-for-9 shooting, 4-for-7 threes, 77.8% TS, -6

Post-injury Podziemski continues to be a brand new player, and it’s awesome. A little out of control in this one at times, but otherwise a great game from Podz.

    Grade: B+

    Kyle Anderson

    12 minutes, 4 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 turnover, 2-for-3 shooting, 0-for-1 threes, 66.7% TS, -7

These Kyle Anderson minutes were, without a doubt, Kyle Anderson minutes.

    Grade: B

    Trayce Jackson-Davis

    9 minutes, 2 points, 1 rebound, 0-for-2 shooting, 2-for-2 free throws, 34.7% TS, -6

After getting a DNP on Wednesday, TJD got back on the court on Friday, but not until late in the third quarter when the ship was sinking and the team was in desperation mode. Looked a little out of sorts.

    Grade: C

    Lindy Waters III

    6 minutes, 0 points, 1 rebound, 1 steal, 0-for-3 shooting, 0-for-2 threes, 0.0% TS, -1

Just some garbage time for Waters, who is out of the rotation at the moment.

Friday’s inactives: Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Jackson Rowe, Pat Spencer

In the Golden State Warriors’ recent loss to the Phoenix Suns, both Steph Curry and Moses Moody put on a solid performance but ultimately fell short.

Steph Curry, the two-time NBA MVP, led the Warriors with 23 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists. Despite his impressive scoring, Curry struggled from beyond the arc, shooting just 3-14 from three-point range. His ability to create shots for himself and others was evident, but the Suns’ defense made it difficult for him to find his rhythm.

Rookie Moses Moody also had a strong showing, contributing 15 points off the bench. The 19-year-old showcased his scoring ability and confidence on the court, providing a spark for the Warriors in the second unit. Moody’s energy and hustle were key factors in keeping the game competitive.

Overall, Curry and Moody both played well in the loss, but the Warriors were unable to overcome the Suns’ strong performance. As the team looks to bounce back, Curry and Moody will continue to be key players in their quest for success.

  • How Colin Cowherd Positively Graded Patriots’ Mike Vrabel Hire

The New England Patriots, despite three straight playoff absences, made a number of hires so far this offseason to benefit the future of the team.

Mike Vrabel sets the tone at head coach. The former New England linebacker showed he could do the job with the Tennessee Titans and now returns to raise the standard of his old team. The current roster needs loads of work, but Vrabel makes the future brighter with quarterback Drake Maye.

FS1’s Colin Cowherd sees that vision and raved over the Patriots hire as potentially the best of the entire coaching cycle.

“I think Mike Vrabel is an A,” Cowherd said on “The Herd” Tuesday. “This to me was the best coach available on the market. He’s got a winning record. He’s a culture changer. Familiarity with the team.”

The only other coach to earn an A from Cowherd was Pete Carroll joining the Las Vegas Raiders and he already has a ring from Super Bowl XLVIII. Cowherd pushed Vrabel ahead of other candidates due to his prior success and ability to institute his culture now with the Patriots.

    Story continues below advertisement

“Those guys don’t really fail,” Cowherd added. “They may not win a trophy, but they don’t fail. I thought this was a solid A hire.”

Colin Cowherd Gives Patriots’ Mike Vrabel Hire a Positive Review

In a recent segment on his show, sports commentator Colin Cowherd praised the New England Patriots’ decision to hire former linebacker Mike Vrabel as their new head coach. Cowherd highlighted Vrabel’s experience as a player under Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, noting that he has a deep understanding of the team’s culture and philosophy.

Cowherd also pointed out Vrabel’s success as a head coach with the Tennessee Titans, where he led the team to multiple playoff appearances and earned the respect of his players. He believes that Vrabel’s leadership style and strategic acumen will be a valuable asset to the Patriots as they look to rebuild their roster and return to their winning ways.

Overall, Cowherd gave the Patriots’ hiring of Vrabel a positive grade, stating that he believes the former player turned coach has the potential to bring success to the organization. Fans of the team will undoubtedly be excited to see how Vrabel’s leadership will impact their future seasons.

  • Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, Gui Santos graded in Warriors loss v Kings

The Golden State Warriors lost to the Sacramento Kings 123-117 on Wednesday night. It was a disappointing and deflating loss, because the Dubs carried a 17-point lead into the halftime locker room. The late-game execution was fairly awful, and they looked overmatched when they lost momentum.

And yet, as I wrote in the recap, it still was an encouraging performance, considering that the Kings were red-hot, at home, and fully healthy, while the Warriors were without their best defensive player, their second-best scorer, and two key bench players, while also losing their starting center in the first half.

So if the grades are more optimistic than you’re feeling after that meltdown, that’s why. As always, grades are based on my expectations of each player, with a “B” grade representing the average performance for that player.

Note: True-shooting percentage (TS) is a scoring efficiency metric that accounts for threes and free throws. Entering Wednesday’s games, league-average TS was 57.4%.

    Andrew Wiggins

    38 minutes, 25 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 2 fouls, 8-for-20 shooting, 5-for-11 threes, 4-for-5 free throws, 56.3% TS, -8

A very strong all-around game for Wiggins. He was the best scorer for the Warriors for much of the night, both when they built a big lead and when they were scrambling to stop the bleeding in the fourth quarter. He had some clutch shots late in the game that would get a lot of attention had the Warriors won.

    Pretty good defensive effort, too.

    Grade: A-
Post-game bonus: Led the team in points.

    Gary Payton II

    13 minutes, 8 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 4 turnovers, 3 fouls, 3-for-6 shooting, 1-for-3 threes, 1-for-1 free throws, 62.1% TS

Kind of an extreme highs-and-lows game for GPII. He had some brilliance on both ends of the court, but was also a bit out of control with an rather painful four turnovers and three fouls in just 13 minutes of action.

    Grade: C

    Kevon Looney

    9 minutes, 0 points, 2 rebounds, 2 fouls, 0-for-3 shooting, 0.0% TS, +6

Looney moved back into the starting lineup, though it seems the plan wasn’t to play him too much, even before he left the game with illness. I didn’t think he played well, but I won’t be too harsh on him given the sickness.

    Grade: C+
Post-game bonus: Best plus/minus on the team.

    Buddy Hield

    25 minutes, 17 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, 3 steals, 1 turnover, 2 fouls, 6-for-12 shooting, 5-for-9 threes, 70.8% TS, +3

Pretty darn good game for Hield. He got back to being the aggressive, efficient scorer that the Warriors thought they had earlier in the season, while maintaining the improved defense that has been the mark of his play over the last month. He was also exceptionally timely, with some ultra-clutch shots.

    Grade: A

    Steph Curry

    34 minutes, 14 points, 3 rebounds, 12 assists, 3 turnovers, 1 foul, 6-for-11 shooting, 1-for-4 threes, 1-for-1 free throws, 61.2% TS, +2

Kind of a weird Curry game. He went full quarterback mode, deferring to teammates and looking for shooters constantly, en route to a season-high 12 assists. That looked like a brilliant choice in the first half, when his teammates were making seemingly every open shot.

But it looked less like a choice and more like settling in the second half, when the Warriors needed Curry to start scoring and he simply couldn’t get open very frequently. Sacramento focused their entire defensive plan at him, and while Curry still had a pretty good game, the Warriors just aren’t going to win many games when he scores 14 points.

    Grade: B+
Post-game bonus: Led the team in assists.

    Moses Moody

    26 minutes, 11 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 fouls, 4-for-10 shooting, 3-for-7 threes, 55.0% TS, -4

On a day where the Dubs gave the ball away 19 times, Moody was one of just three players (along with the two centers) to not turn the ball over. And for that we thank him.

He also had some big threes in this game, even if the overall shooting line was slightly below-average efficiency. The Warriors need more rebounds from him if they’re going to play him at power forward, but his energy and aggression were very welcome sights.

    Grade: B

    Trayce Jackson-Davis

    24 minutes, 11 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 steal, 4 fouls, 4-for-6 shooting, 3-for-6 free throws, 63.7% TS, -2

A really strong TJD game. He played pretty good defense, even against Domantas Sabonis, and had a very crafty offensive game. He’s really showing an improved ability to finish through contact, and he had some delightful passes as he’s starting to learn how to find his back-cutters. Super aggressive on the glass as well.

    Grade: A-
Post-game bonus: Led the team in rebounds.

    Lindy Waters III

    14 minutes, 3 points, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 1-for-2 shooting, 1-for-2 threes, 75.0% TS, -10

Waters is such a luxury to have at the back of the rotation, but games like this are a reminder that he is, indeed, towards the back of the rotation, and shouldn’t be relied on nightly when the team is healthy. Just a tough game for him to get much going.

    Grade: C
Post-game bonus: Tied for the worst plus/minus on the team.

    Dennis Schröder

    21 minutes, 7 points, 3 rebounds, 5 assists, 5 turnovers, 3 fouls, 3-for-8 shooting, 1-for-3 threes, 43.8% TS, -5

For one reason or another, I remain optimistic that Schröder will figure things out and be the quality veteran he’s been for the better part of a decade for the Warriors at some point. It’s really, really, really hard to adjust to a new team on the fly, let alone one with as unique of an offensive system as the Warriors have. But he’s really struggling right now, and Steve Kerr moving him out of the starting lineup seems a pretty clear admission of that.

    Grade: D+

    Quinten Post

    15 minutes, 5 points, 6 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block, 1 turnover, 5 fouls, 2-for-5 shooting, 1-for-4 threes, 50.0% TS, -10

How fun to see Post get some serious minutes! After the game, Kerr said he wants to get the rookie into the rotation more going forward, and you can see why. Post has size that we haven’t seen on the Warriors in a while, which showed up with Post’s rebounding and overall presence. And his threat as a pick-and-pop scorer could really unlock new things for the offense.

He got schooled a little bit against an All-Star in Sabonis (hence the five fouls), but for the most part he more than held his own.

    Grade: B+
Post-game bonus: Tied for the worst plus/minus on the team.

    Gui Santos

    23 minutes, 16 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 turnover, 1 foul, 6-for-9 shooting, 4-for-5 threes, 88.9% TS, 0 +/-

I don’t know how the minutes are going to break down when Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, and Kyle Anderson return. But it seems pretty clear that Santos has to stay in the rotation right now. He’s playing strong defense and quickly learning how to avoid fouling and rookie mistakes. He’s shooting 12-for-18 from three-point range. He makes good passes and plays within the offense. And he seems to always be the hardest-working person on the court.

    Did the Dubs find something???

    Grade: A+

    Wednesday’s DNP-CDs: Pat Spencer
Wednesday’s inactives: Kyle Anderson, Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski

In the Warriors’ recent loss to the Kings, Steph Curry, Andrew Wiggins, and Gui Santos received mixed grades for their performances.

Steph Curry, despite scoring a game-high 30 points, struggled to find his rhythm early on and had a few costly turnovers down the stretch. His shooting was off at times, but he managed to hit some key shots to keep the Warriors in the game. Overall, Curry’s performance was solid but not his usual dominant self.

Andrew Wiggins had a quiet night, scoring just 12 points on 5-of-15 shooting. He struggled to get going offensively and was unable to make a significant impact on the game. Wiggins will need to step up and be more aggressive in future games to help the Warriors secure wins.

Gui Santos, the rookie forward, showed flashes of potential in limited minutes. He contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds off the bench, showcasing his versatility and energy on the court. Santos still has a lot to learn and improve on, but his performance was a bright spot in an otherwise disappointing game for the Warriors.

Overall, the Warriors will need their key players like Curry and Wiggins to step up and lead the team to victories. Santos’ development will be crucial as the season progresses, and his contributions off the bench will be key to the team’s success. The Warriors will need to bounce back from this loss and regroup for their upcoming games.

  • Graded Forecast Calls For Loaded Pegasus, Southwest Winds ‘Point’ To Oaklawn

    By

The English polymath John Ruskin, who was always hard at work scribbling a well-timed observation for some future generation to co-opt, said when it came to the weather, “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather.”

Well, bully for you Mr. Ruskin! Send him a going stick and put him to work on the nearest turf course. Some might care to offer quite a different observation after recent events. What we do know about the state of the weather is it has been rough across the lower 48.

In an attempt to focus on sunnier times ahead, if we are speaking of things delicious and exhilarating, how about the pending graded stakes slate on Saturday?

Leading off on a ‘refreshing’ afternoon, my colleague Christina Bossinakis brought us some well-timed historical perspective concerning Saturday’s renewal of the GI Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park. Reporting from Hallandale’s backside, her story behind ‘TDN Rising Star’ Locked (Gun Runner) for Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher tells us why the signature race for older horses was designed as such some nine years ago and how it has become a jumping off point for stallion prospects.

Of course we know this Pletcher’s entry is not a lock. The 4-year-old is up against some formidable opponents in GI Breeders’ Cup Classic hero White Abarrio (Race Day), Derby victor Mystik Dan (Goldencents), GISW Saudi Crown (Always Dreaming) and GISW Mixto (Good Magic). Look for Locked’s stablemate Crupi (Curlin), GI Santa Anita Derby hero from last year Stronghold (Ghostzapper) (covered yesterday by Bossinakis in TDN) and layoff runner Newgrange (Violence) to make some noise at odds in the double digits.

Nations Pride wins the Arlington Million at Colonial | Coady Media

If that forecast does not cheer you up, then do not forget about Gulfstream’s undercard. The schedule is brimming with six other graded races.

The GI Pegasus World Cup Turf issued an invite to Nations Pride (Ire) (Teofilo Ire) and the 6-year-old Godolphin homebred accepted. The potential race time favorite has a trio of Grade I wins in North America for trainer Charlie Appleby. The only question mark is his fitness level. If the homebred is ready to fire, then his class could win the day.

“He’s [Nations Pride] always shown a good level of ability, progressing from 2 to 3 and from there on, he sort of progressed throughout his career,” Appleby said. “We found that the conventional tracks, the flat tracks of America and Dubai, suited him. So that’s why he’s mainly been internationally campaigned, really. I think 10 furlongs is probably his most ideal trip if you want to pigeonhole him into something like that, but I see no reason why the nine should be an inconvenience.”

There are others drawn in here with more than a fighting chance. Integration (Quality Road) will look to avenge his loss to Nations Pride that he suffered in the GI Arlington Million at Colonial Downs in August. He too has not been seen since the fall when he won the GII Red Smith Stakes at the Big A. Trainer Shug McGaughey entered Integration in this race last year and after going off as the favorite he finished fifth.

“I think he’s [Integration] done well,” McGaughey said. “The Pegasus last year was kind of a last-minute thing. I had planned to give him some time off and run him at Keeneland and we decided to run here for the money. He didn’t get the best of trips. Tyler [Gaffalione] rode him. He had him down inside and just couldn’t get him out when he wanted to. I think with all the trouble he was in, it was a credible race.”

If you fancy a longshot in the Pegasus Turf who is getting a cutback in distance, then give Balnikov (Ire) (Adaay Ire) the once over. Conditioned by Phil D’Amato, the 6-year-old has raced mainly on the Southern California grass courses. However, last May he thoroughly enjoyed a soft turf course at Pimlico and won the GII Dinner Party Stakes.

Sticking with the same surface, the GII Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf promises to offer some real value when it comes to wagering because there is not a prescribed deserving favorite. Certainly, Shadwell Stables’s Raqiya (Ire) (Blue Point Ire) has some English form that is inviting and Sacred Wish (Not This Time) boasts a win last out in the GI Matriarch Stakes at Del Mar Dec. 1.

Dona Clota in the Gulfstream paddock schooling | Lauren King

However, more intriguing is an entry like Dona Clota (Chi) (Ivan Denisovich Ire), who won a pair of Grade 1 races in her native Chile. Now she joins trainer Ignacio Correas’s outfit for Resolute Racing. One other name to remember is See You Around (Ire) (Siyouni Fr). The filly began her career in France, shipped to race for the live barn of Christophe Clement and she took home a black-type over this course last month.

The rest of the Gulfstream undercard includes a bout between MGSW Mystic Lake (Mot Town) against MGSW Emery (More Than Ready) in the GII Inside Information Stakes, and a rematch ensues between the 1-2 finishers from the GIII Harlan’s Holiday Stakes, Rocket Can (Into Mischief) and Tumbarumba (Oscar Performance). They square off once more in the GIII Fred W. Hooper Stakes. Finally, a couple of turf distance tests will be administered in the GIII La Prevoyante Stakes and the GIII W.L. McKnight Stakes.

Returning to issues skyward of the inclement variety, Oaklawn Park regularly deals with what Ruskin would call “different kinds of good weather.” Arkansas is particularly susceptible to a cold blast in January and Hot Springs was certainly on the receiving end of another good socking this time around. The Derby and Oaks series in ‘The Natural State’–which both offer 20-10-6-4-2 on the path to Churchill in May–is back on track Saturday with the GIII Southwest Stakes and Martha Washington Stakes, respectively.

First, the Southwest has drawn a field of 10, and blowing into town for Bob Baffert is Eclipse nominee & GISW Gaming (Game Winner). Finishing in early November as the runner-up in the GI FanDuel Breeders’ Cup Juvenile to newly-minted champion 2-year-old male & stablemate Citizen Bull (Into Mischief), the dark bay is looking to get back on track after he ran a distant third in the GII Los Alamitos Futurity Dec. 14.

Gaming working for the first time over the local strip at Oaklawn | Coady Media

“He [Gaming] went from the top 12 to nowhere,” said Baffert. “That’s the way it is in this business. You’re only as good as your last race. He ran a big race in the Breeders’ Cup. I might have been a little too easy on him for the Los Al. I wasn’t sure if I was going to run in there and then at the last minute decided I was going to run him there. He just didn’t bring his ‘A’ game that day. Just got a little bit worked up in the paddock. He was too fresh. He didn’t bring it and that’s what happens.”

Gaming will have to contend with a pair of tough customers in GSP Sandman (Tapit) and Patch Adams (Into Mischief). The former–a $1.2-million OBS March buy–tuned for this spot by clearing an optional claimer at Oaklawn Dec. 13, while the latter earned a ‘TDN Rising Star’ at second asking when he won by an eye-catching 10 1/2 lengths at Churchill Downs in late November.

As for the Martha Washington, look for ‘TDN Rising Star’ Quietside (Malibu Moon) to take care of business for Shortleaf Stable and trainer John Ortiz.

The graded weekend also includes the salty GIII Houston Ladies Classic Stakes for older females at Sam Houston Race Park and at Santa Anita we have the GII San Pasqual Stakes going for older males.

In the spirit of Mr. Ruskin, here’s to different kinds of good graded racing on Saturday.

Get ready for an exciting day at Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort as the graded forecast calls for a loaded Pegasus and southwest winds ‘point’ to thrilling races ahead.

With the Pegasus World Cup Invitational taking place at Gulfstream Park, Oaklawn is gearing up for a stacked field of talented horses in their own stakes races. The Southwest Stakes, a prep race for the Kentucky Derby, is set to showcase some of the top 3-year-olds in the country.

The combination of top-tier competition and favorable winds blowing in from the southwest means that Oaklawn is the place to be this weekend for horse racing fans. Whether you’re a seasoned handicapper or a casual observer, there’s sure to be plenty of action and excitement on tap.

So grab your program, place your bets, and get ready to witness some of the best horse racing action around. The forecast is calling for a loaded Pegasus and southwest winds ‘pointing’ to Oaklawn – don’t miss out on the fun!
