  • USA’s Madison Keys wins first grand slam title at Australian Open, stunning world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in thrilling final

    CNN
     —

Madison Keys won her first ever grand slam title on Saturday, stunning two-time defending champion and world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka 6-3 2-6 7-5 in a thrilling Australian Open women’s final.

The 29-year-old American initially enjoyed one of those golden days when every part of her game came together perfectly – her serve was immaculate, her returns aggressive and her groundstrokes as powerful as the notoriously powerful Sabalenka – as she raced into an early one-set lead.

But in the second set – as Sabalenka displayed all the qualities that have made her the most dominant hard-court player on the women’s tour – Keys’ easy, languid rhythm deserted her and all the momentum seemed to swing back towards the Belarusian.

Keys has come close to a grand slam title before, reaching the 2017 US Open final and four major semifinals. But none of that pressure seemed to affect her in the final set as she held her nerve, finally broke Sabalenka at 7-5, raised her arms to the sky in celebration before running over to her team, embracing her coach and husband Bjorn Fratangelo.

Madison Keys produced a stunning performance to win the women's Australian Open title.

A former prodigy who seemed destined for grand slam success early in her career, Keys had never quite reached the heights she was expected to reach, until now. She suffered a devastating and comprehensive 6-3 6-0 loss to Sloane Stephens in the 2017 US Open final before somehow losing to Sabalenka in the 2023 US Open semifinal despite being a set and a break up.

“I have wanted this for so long and I have been in one other grand slam final. It did not go my way and I didn’t know if I was every going to be able to get back to this position to try to win a trophy again,” she said in her on-court interview afterwards, her voice cracking with emotion. “And my team believed in me every step of the way so thank you so much.

“Last year was so tough with some really bad injuries and I didn’t know if I was going to be able to do it again and to be here and to have this trophy and to also be able to do it with my husband who is kind of dazed and confused over there, I love you all so much and I cannot wait for more.”

This year, something seemed different for Keys. She came into this final on the back of an incredible run through this tournament, sweeping past higher ranked players like Elena Rybakina, Danielle Collins and world No. 2 Iga Świątek, and became the first woman since Serena Williams in 2005 to defeat the world No. 1 and No. 2 seeds at the Australian Open.

Keys won a thrilling final against Sabalenka.

And Keys continued that momentum in the final, opening with a ferocity that blew Sabalenka off the court as she raced to a 5-1 lead. Though Sabalenka seemed uncharacteristically rattled, conceding two double faults and a break in her first service game, it was Keys’ outstanding tennis that forced the world No. 1 into so many errors.

She missed just three first serves in the first set and every shot she attempted seemed to find its target – even a backhand slice that looked to be heading into the net ghosted over it, leaving Sabalenka marooned on the baseline, only able to grimace as the ball landed well out of her reach.

Keys then wrapped up the first set 6-3, and Sabalenka left the court immediately to reset and try to kickstart her comeback.

As Sabalenka’s serve became more accurate in the second set, giving her more of a foothold in the match, shots that Keys had made in the first set floated long or became tangled up in the net and she hit as many unforced errors in the first four games of the second set as she had done in the entirety of the first.

Sabalenka broke Keys twice, took control of the second set, and suddenly the scores were level.

Sabalenka was seeking to win her third consecutive Australian Open title.

With the pressure building, Keys served first in the third set and set the tone early, winning every point in her first service game. Sabalenka matched her stride-for-stride, however, and the score remained locked on serve at 5-5. Not since 2012 had a women’s grand slam final been so close in the third set.

It seemed as if the match was heading for a deciding tiebreak but Keys found an extra burst of energy, produced two forehand winners to hold serve and make it 6-5, before breaking Sabalenka with another winner to make it 7-5 and secure the win.

Sabalenka, who had been seeking to become the first woman for 26 years to win three consecutive Australian Open titles, was left stunned and smashed her racket on the floor in frustration before recovering to congratulate Keys and joke around with her team during the trophy ceremony afterwards.

“As always, that’s your fault guys!” she joked. “I don’t want to see you for the next week – I really hate you! Thank you so much for everything and blah, blah blah.

“I think we did our best, just Madison was doing incredible and I couldn’t do anything in this match. Next time I play Madison I will bring better tennis. Of course, sending love to my team. I love you even though we lost.”

This story has been updated with additional information.

In a stunning upset, USA’s Madison Keys secured her first grand slam title at the Australian Open by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka in a thrilling final. Keys, known for her powerful groundstrokes and aggressive style of play, showcased her skills and mental toughness throughout the match, ultimately emerging victorious in a hard-fought battle.

The final was a rollercoaster of emotions, with both players trading blows and momentum shifts. Sabalenka, who was the favorite to win the title, started strong and took the first set. However, Keys fought back in the second set, displaying her resilience and determination to level the match. The third set was a tense affair, with both players hitting winners and fighting for every point. In the end, Keys was able to hold her nerve and close out the match, clinching the title in a dramatic fashion.

For Keys, this victory marks a significant milestone in her career, as she has long been considered one of the most talented players on the tour. After struggling with injuries and inconsistent form in recent years, this triumph at the Australian Open is a testament to her hard work and dedication to the sport. With this win, Keys has firmly established herself as a force to be reckoned with on the WTA tour and will undoubtedly be a contender in future grand slam events.

Congratulations to Madison Keys on her well-deserved victory at the Australian Open. This win is not only a testament to her skill and determination but also a testament to the depth and competitiveness of women’s tennis. Keys’ triumph is sure to inspire the next generation of players and fans, and we look forward to seeing what she will achieve next on the court.

  • Novak Djokovic’s tennis is good enough to win more Grand Slams, but his body is at its limit

MELBOURNE, Australia — Novak Djokovic won some of his 24 Grand Slams without playing his best tennis. When his level wasn’t quite where it needed to be, his body would step up to outlast and outmaneuver his opponents.

Before he became the Novak Djokovic he is now — men’s Grand Slam title record-holder and the longest-lasting member of the ‘Big Three’ — he was in a very different situation. His level was comparable to that of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal, but his body kept letting him down.

He retired against Nadal at the 2006 French Open; he did the same thing against the same opponent in the Wimbledon semifinals a year later. His ailments became so notorious that Andy Roddick mocked him in a withering attack ahead of their U.S. Open quarterfinal in 2008, suggesting that some of his injuries were not genuine.

Roddick listed ailments including: “bird flu… Anthrax. SARS. Common cough and cold” when asked about Djokovic’s injuries. Federer also criticized Djokovic after his retirement against Roddick at the 2009 Australian Open, saying: “It’s happened before, he’s not the guy who’s never given up before, so that’s kind of disappointing to see.”

Sixteen years later and now aged 37, Djokovic appears to have come full circle. His level is there, but his body is failing him.

On Friday at the Australian Open, a physically compromised Djokovic was able to go toe-to-toe with the world No. 2 Alexander Zverev for 81 minutes of their semifinal, only losing a gruelling first set when he missed a sitter volley on top of the net down 5-6 in a tiebreak. Djokovic immediately retired, shaking hands with Zverev and waving to the crowd as he left the court.

Djokovic was even able to beat the reigning French Open and Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz in Tuesday’s quarterfinal despite tearing a muscle in his left leg towards the end of the first set. This same issue forced him to retire against Zverev, underlining the miraculousness of that win on Tuesday as well as the gulf between playing on adrenaline and painkillers and actually recovering from an acute muscle injury.

He had performed a similar miracle at the French Open last June, beating Francisco Cerundolo in five sets despite tearing the medial meniscus in his right knee midway through the match. He had surgery after the tournament and reached the Wimbledon final less than six weeks later.

Neither miracle had a happy ending. He withdrew from the French Open before his next match against Casper Ruud; at Wimbledon, Carlos Alcaraz took advantage of his limited movement and blew him off the court in a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(4) win where the scoreboard flattered Djokovic.

These results, two retirements and an injury-influenced thrashing, account for three of Djokovic’s last four Grand Slams; he also exited the 2024 U.S. Open in a shock defeat to Alexei Popyrin in which his flexibility and durability were fleeting rather than fundamental.

Djokovic is now in a compromised catch-22: he has the level to win the four five-set majors he actually cares about, but the physicality to win the three-set events that make up the bulk of the ATP Tour and about which he largely does not care. It’s a cruel coda for someone who got so used to pulling off barely believable Houdini acts, especially here in Melbourne, where he won the title with muscle tears in 2021 and 2023.

Novak Djokovic’s body could not sustain a Grand Slam semifinal this time. (Yuichi Yamazaki / AFP via Getty Images)

In Jannik Sinner and Alcaraz, Djokovic also has two proper rivals who can outmatch him on the court. Both smoked him in Grand Slam matches last year, before Djokovic beat Alcaraz in (two) straight sets in the Olympic gold-medal match and then defeated him again here Tuesday.

In an individual contest, especially over three sets, he is still a match for them both. But Grand Slams are not about individual wins. They are an exercise in accumulation and endurance, in which players have to beat one and sometimes two or three of their strongest rivals while ensuring they don’t expend too much energy in earning the opportunity to do so.

Djokovic, who has mastered the art of winning the first four rounds of a major with as little trouble as possible over his career, is the greatest exponent of Grand Slam pacing the sport has ever seen. At the 2019 Australian Open, he lost two games in the quarterfinal against Kei Nishikori, who had to retire in the second set, and then beat Lucas Pouille for the loss of four games to reach the final. A year later, when the 2020 final went to a fifth set, it was Djokovic, not Dominic Thiem, who was able to dig deep and find something extra.

    go-deeper

    GO DEEPER

How Novak Djokovic changed his game to become the GOAT

Five years on, the passage of time has done what is inevitable, leaving Djokovic limping out of majors having made a career out of being one of the ultimate endurance tests in men’s tennis. In his news conference after retiring against Zverev, he admitted that the “statistics are against him” in terms of the frequency of his recent injuries.

“It’s not like I’m worrying approaching every Grand Slam now whether I’m going to get injured,” he said. “It is true that (I’ve been) getting injured quite a bit in the last few years. I don’t know what exactly is the reason for that. Maybe several different factors.”

The most obvious factor is his age. The endurance of Serena Williams, Nadal and Federer has remade what constitutes the end of a tennis career, but even Djokovic’s superhuman peers had stopped winning majors at the age he is now. Federer won his last slam at 36 in 2018. Nadal won the 2022 French Open two days after turning that same age, but did so with an entirely numbed foot and has not been close to being a factor in a major since. Andy Murray, Djokovic’s coach here in Melbourne, won the last of his three majors at 29 and made his last second-week appearance just after turning 30.

“It’s unfortunate if the body’s not responding in the way that you would like,” Murray said to a small group of reporters Friday.

Despite this, Djokovic is not done.

“I’ll keep striving to win more slams. And as long as I feel that I want to put up with all of this, I’ll be around,” he said.

If the opening and closing chapters of Djokovic’s career do prove symmetrical, his career will still be remembered for the 13 years and record-breaking number of majors that came in between, when either his body, mind or otherworldly talents would compensate for any temporary deficiencies.

As he finds himself hamstrung by his own flesh, the future of his quest for more of the biggest titles in the sport is more uncertain than it has ever been.

(Top photo: Andy Cheung / Getty Images)

Novak Djokovic has proven time and time again that he is one of the greatest tennis players of all time. With 20 Grand Slam titles under his belt, he is just one behind Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal for the most in men’s tennis history. However, as Djokovic gets older, it is becoming increasingly clear that his body may be starting to betray him.

In recent years, Djokovic has had to deal with a number of injuries that have hampered his ability to compete at the highest level. From elbow issues to neck problems, the Serbian superstar has had to battle through pain and discomfort in order to stay on the court. While he has managed to continue winning titles despite these setbacks, it is clear that his body is starting to show signs of wear and tear.

At 34 years old, Djokovic is reaching an age where many tennis players start to see a decline in their performance. While his skill and talent are unquestionable, his body may not be able to keep up with the demands of the grueling ATP Tour schedule for much longer. If Djokovic wants to continue adding to his impressive Grand Slam tally, he may need to start prioritizing rest and recovery in order to prolong his career.

Despite his body being at its limit, there is no denying that Djokovic’s tennis is still good enough to win more Grand Slam titles. His mental toughness, physical conditioning, and strategic prowess are unmatched on the court, and he has shown time and time again that he is capable of overcoming any obstacle in his path. However, if Djokovic wants to continue competing at the highest level for years to come, he may need to start listening to his body and making adjustments to his training and tournament schedule.

In conclusion, Novak Djokovic’s tennis is undoubtedly good enough to win more Grand Slams, but his body may be reaching its limit. As he continues to age, Djokovic will need to prioritize his health and well-being in order to prolong his career and continue competing at the highest level. Only time will tell if Djokovic can continue to defy the odds and add to his already impressive legacy in the sport of tennis.

  • Ben Shelton’s lights-out Grand Slam tennis evolves, from vibes to doing the math

MELBOURNE, Australia — Ben Shelton’s Australian Open equation is simple. Beat the best player in the world to get to the final, then beat either the second-best player in the world by ranking or one of the greatest men’s players ever.

He plays Jannik Sinner, the world No. 1 and defending champion, in the semifinals in Melbourne on Friday night. Alexander Zverev and Novak Djokovic contest the other semifinal. But even if he doesn’t win another match, Shelton, the world No. 21, has made one thing exceptionally clear to the tennis world the past two weeks: it’s one thing to beat him in a tour event, it’s a completely different thing to topple him at a Grand Slam.

The American has now played 10 majors, reaching the semifinals twice and the quarterfinals once. Shelton is 24-9 overall in Grand Slam main-draw matches and 18-4 on the hard courts of New York and Melbourne.

Shelton has been talking tennis math for a couple of weeks now, telling anyone who wants to listen that he backs himself in the best-of-five format more than any other. Grand Slam calculations form the basis of Shelton’s success in the biggest tournaments in tennis, in which he has a 72 percent win rate. He’s at 58 percent for all ATP Tour competitions, the majors included.

“For me, it’s really special to be playing at these big tournaments and playing my best tennis at the big tournaments,” he said Wednesday night after beating Lorenzo Sonego of Italy, 6-4, 7-5, 4-6, 7-6(4) in three and a half hours.

To look at Shelton’s game on the surface, his version of big-time tennis is all vibes and thunder: the massive serve, the cranked forehands and backhands that get an extra scream of exertion when he gets his shoulders moving. It’s a force-of-nature approach to the tennis court that pulls his opponent and everybody watching into a cauldron of vibes.

That’s maybe how it was in his breakout runs, especially at the 2023 U.S. Open when he sprinted to the semifinals with his hang-up-the-phone celebration and forehands scudding down the sidelines. Not so much now. The massive serve is being turned into something trickier and more precise. The groundstrokes are earning the right to finish points rather than exploding them. He’s incorporating more spin on his forehand and working hard on varying his return game.

“You get a few more balls back,” his father and coach, Bryan Shelton, said walking through a tunnel under Melbourne Park with his son. “You start making a few smarter decisions. He’s doing things he wasn’t doing a year ago.”

It all goes back to the math. Big games, though, come with small margins, especially for Shelton the past couple of years. A few loose points lost to rocket forehands that just miss, or to an overhit return here and there, can get an opponent halfway to the finish line in a best-of-three match.

A couple more, and the match might well be over. In a best-of-five-sets match, especially given how much time he spends in the weight room and the running track, Shelton feels like he’s got all day to make up for a ropey patch because he kind of does, and so does everyone else, especially now that he has achieved a certain level of Grand Slam success over and over.

“I feel like I belong,” he said as he walked the corridor late Wednesday evening. “I feel like I deserve it.”

    So does his father.

“You have kids?” he asked a little while before Shelton spoke. “It’s little things you work on paying tiny dividends here and there. Over time, hopefully, they add up.”

He wasn’t really talking about tennis. And then he was.

Ben Shelton, serve savant, wants to talk about the return

Shelton knew it was going to have to go this way — because of the math.

When he rolled to those Australian Open quarterfinals and U.S. Open semifinals in 2023, he felt that the dreamlike tennis he was living through could vanish at any moment. Back then his serve, his biggest weapon, had to be perfect, along with just about everything else. If he had a bad serving day or wasn’t nailing lines with his groundstrokes, he probably wasn’t going to win.

More importantly, he hadn’t yet figured out how to win not just without hitting 100 percent of Hail Marys, but without using 100 percent of his energy, physical and mental.

The past year, and especially the past few months, he and his father have focused on stringing together a safety net, because most of the time he and every other player will be far from a perfect version of themselves on the tennis court.

His biggest task has been trying to figure out how to get into more points on his opponents’ serves. In the corridor late Wednesday, he talked about the past. He might start a match returning well by standing deep, but when an opponent made an adjustment and standing deep stopped working, he had nowhere to turn.

“I wasn’t good at making the adjustments or changing up my position, giving guys different looks, and I feel like I can do that now,” he said.

“The best returners in the world, they can do so many different things, and sometimes that’s hitting the ball and roping into the baseline and sometimes that’s a deep, floating chip. Sometimes it’s a chip at the feet. That’s a lot of what I’ve been working on.”

Against Sonego, Shelton was desperate not to fritter away a two-set lead after finding himself in a fourth-set tiebreak. Shelton had scrambled Sonego early with a series of looping, spinny forehands that he’d practised all December in Florida. Then, Sonego surged. His winner total kept growing, from six in the first set and 14 in the second to 17 in the third and then 26 in the fourth. Shelton’s legs were fine, but his mind was fried from watching all those balls sail past him out of reach.

At 4-4, after some tight misses from the back by Shelton and at the net by Sonego, the Italian twisted a kick serve down the middle to Shelton’s forehand. He didn’t try to kill it: he hit a low chip short, drawing Sonego into the net, where he didn’t really want to be at that moment. Sonego looped an approach into Shelton’s backhand and he thundered it straight back. The volley sailed long. Shelton closed it out from there to set up his date with the world No. 1 and defending champion.

He’s a realist. Sinner has been in a class by himself, joined and surpassed intermittently by Carlos Alcaraz, for the past five months. Shelton knows his chances are what they are. But the match remains a huge opportunity to measure himself and his progress against the best there is on the biggest stage.

Shelton has beaten Sinner once, in October 2023 in Shanghai, just as the Italian was rounding into the form that carried him to the top spot in the rankings. He has not won a set against Sinner in four tries since then.

He will try to believe that doesn’t matter, just as he did before he faced Lorenzo Musetti in the third round. Musetti had won both of their previous matches. People were asking him how that was going to go.

“I don’t really care who is on the other side of the court,” he said after he had beaten Musetti, who had never played him in a Grand Slam.

“If I’m healthy and I’m feeling good, I always feel like I can go the distance, five sets. That’s half the battle, trusting in your ability to make it all the way to the end.”

What’s the other half? Sinner, and then maybe Djokovic. It’s the last weekend of a Grand Slam and there are only four players left. It’s just math.

    Seacrest, out!

“Wheel of Fortune” host Ryan Seacrest was thrown to the ground when an overzealous contestant won the popular game show’s $40,000 grand prize on Tuesday.

Pittsburgh native Daniel Thomas needed to solve a one-word, seven-letter puzzle in the “Living Things” category in the show’s daunting bonus round.

Seacrest gave the anxious-looking contestant the letters “R, S, T, L, N, E” to start with the “S” and the “E” appearing on the board.

Thomas then chose “H, G, D, O,” but the only letter to appear was a “G.”

With only 10 seconds to solve the puzzle, Thomas blurted out, “Guppies” just before time expired.

“Yes!” Seacrest told him. “You did it!”

The elated contestant couldn’t control the joy of solving the puzzle and went in to embrace Seacrest with a hug but instead knocked him to the ground.

“Oh my gosh!” Thomas yelled as he went to help the host up.

“I’m good, I’m good,” Seacrest said with a smile.

The former “American Idol” host jumped back to his feet and immediately revealed that Thomas won $40,000.

“Daniel, easy on our host, but celebrate with $40,000,” show announcer Jim Thornton told Thomas as he embraced his family.

Seacrest revealed to Thomas that he was leaving the show with a total of $71,950 and slid over to the excited contestant to hug him — this time staying on his feet.

“How did you do that in the last second,” Seacrest asked.

“Push you over or solve the puzzle,” Thomas joked.

Thomas shared that when he “saw the letter P, the word just popped” into his head.

The clip, posted on the game show’s YouTube page, garnered some interesting reactions from fans — who all mostly seemed excited for Thomas and got a kick out of him knocking the host down.

“That was an amazing solve & the funniest thing I’ve seen all day after the solve,” one user commented.

“That tackle is worth a lot of money!” another chimed in.

“Whoa! I can’t believe Daniel won the bonus round, but he also knocked Ryan down! Ooh, I hope he’s all right,” wrote another.

Seacrest began hosting “Wheel of Fortune” alongside co-host Vanna White on Sept. 9 after Pat Sajak, the show’s longtime host, announced he would leave in June 2023.

“I love giving away the money,” he told Fox News in December. “I get so excited when people win the money, and they win a lot of money. I’m hoping to give away a million dollars in 2025.”

Ryan Seacrest, host of the popular game show ‘Wheel of Fortune’, suffered a hard fall on set after an emotional contestant won the $40,000 grand prize. The contestant, who had been struggling financially, broke down in tears as she spun the wheel and landed on the coveted $40K wedge.

Seacrest, known for his charismatic and composed demeanor, was so moved by the contestant’s reaction that he lost his balance and fell to the ground. Despite the fall, he quickly got back up and congratulated the contestant on her big win.

The moment was captured on camera and quickly went viral on social media, with fans praising Seacrest for his genuine and heartfelt reaction to the contestant’s win. Many viewers were touched by the emotional moment and commended the contestant for her perseverance and determination.

Seacrest later joked about the fall, saying that he was just so caught up in the excitement of the moment that he lost his footing. He assured fans that he was okay and that he was just happy to see the contestant walk away with the grand prize.

Overall, it was a heartwarming and emotional moment on ‘Wheel of Fortune’ that reminded us all of the power of perseverance and the joy of unexpected victories. Congratulations to the lucky contestant and kudos to Ryan Seacrest for his genuine and heartfelt reaction to her win.
