Injury Update: Zach Edey in Concussion Protocol, Out for Grizzlies-Thunder Game

The Memphis Grizzlies will be without rookie center Zach Edey for their upcoming matchup against the Oklahoma City Thunder as he is in the league’s concussion protocol.

Edey, who was selected by the Grizzlies with the 22nd overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, suffered the concussion during a recent practice session. The team announced that he will be out for an indefinite period of time as he goes through the necessary steps to recover from the injury.

The 7-foot-4 center has shown promise in his limited playing time this season, averaging 6.2 points and 3.8 rebounds in just under 12 minutes per game. His absence will be felt by the Grizzlies, who have relied on his size and shot-blocking ability to shore up their interior defense.

Head coach Taylor Jenkins expressed his disappointment at losing Edey for the upcoming game, but emphasized that the team’s priority is the player’s health and well-being.

“We’re obviously going to miss Zach’s presence on the court, but his health is the most important thing right now,” Jenkins said. “We’ll be monitoring his progress closely and making sure he gets the care he needs to recover fully.”

In the meantime, the Grizzlies will have to make adjustments to their lineup to compensate for Edey’s absence. Veteran center Steven Adams is expected to see an increase in playing time, along with backup big men Xavier Tillman and Jaren Jackson Jr.

The Grizzlies are currently sitting in the middle of the pack in the Western Conference standings, with a 6-5 record. They will be looking to bounce back from a recent loss to the Los Angeles Lakers and secure a win against the Thunder to keep pace in the competitive conference.

It remains to be seen how long Edey will be out of action, but the Grizzlies will be hoping for a swift recovery for the promising young center. In the meantime, they will have to rely on their depth and versatility to overcome his absence and continue their push for a playoff spot.
