New grocery store planned for Louisville’s Portland neighborhood
RA Foodbanks submitted an application to open a grocery store on 25th and W. Market Streets.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. — A new grocery store could be coming to Louisville’s Portland neighborhood, where a vacant gray and white building currently sits at 25th and West Market streets.
RA Foodmart submitted an application for a liquor license in December for the building in Portland. The application states: “I am going to launch this business as a retail store to sell groceries, packaged alcohol beverages such as beer, and other essential products and services.”
According to the Louisville Business Portal, the license application is still “in review.”
“We’re praying for produce and meat and things like that, and so it’s just really good to see them not afraid to use the building,” said Charmae Cuff, who works across the street and is from the Portland neighborhood. “It’s just the thought of having food…it’s happy and sad that people get excited when they hear they’re getting food. It’s unbelievable in 2025 that you’re excited that there’s a store opening.”
WHAS11 reached out to the applicant Wednesday, but did not hear back.
Cuff said the neighborhood has a large senior population that needs more access to fresh food within walking distance.
“Portland, West End, we’re resilient people, but you know, we need more food,” Cuff said. “We shouldn’t have to rely on corner stores and gas station food to survive. We need fresh food, fresh produce, fresh meat.”
She hopes a corner market will be a catalyst for the neighborhood.
“We just hope more companies come through and say, ‘Hey, we’ll open up a business that’s not just alcohol and cigarettes,’” Cuff said.
Louisville Metro Councilperson Donna Purvis told WHAS11 she was not aware of the grocery store’s plans, but supports the idea.

FDA Just Upgraded The Recall Of Costco Grocery Item To The Highest Alert Level
It’s a new week and we have another food recall to bring to your attention. But this one is a repeat of sorts, so we are asking you to check your freezers, y’all.
Last October, as we previously reported, Costco issued a recall for Kirkland Signature Smoked Salmon with lot number 8512801270 and a best by date of 11/13/2024. Now, this recall has been upgraded by the FDA and given the highest level of risk, a Class 1.

The FDA defines a Class 1 recall as, “a situation in which there is a reasonable probability that the use of, or exposure to, a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
The impacted packages of salmon were manufactured by Brooklyn-based Acme Smoked Fish Corp and sold at Costco stores between October 9 and 13. And while these have long since been removed from Costco store shelves, there is concern that customers have them in their freezers and are unaware of the danger.
Consumption of food contaminated with listeria monocytogenes can cause listeriosis, a serious infection that primarily affects older adults, persons with weakened immune systems, and pregnant women and their newborns.
Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions sometimes preceded by diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms. In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn. In addition, serious and sometimes fatal infections in older adults and persons with weakened immune systems can occur.
So do a sweep of the freezer and don’t take any chances. If you have one of these packages, go ahead and throw it out.

Former Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff, were spotted exiting a grocery store Thursday with plastic bags to carry their goods.
Harris, 60 — who had talked about banning plastic straws during her 2019 presidential campaign — was seen smiling in the 99 Ranch Market Asian Grocery store in Westwood, Calif., as she and her husband make the transition back into civilian life.
At one point, Emhoff, 60, appeared to wave after being noticed in the store with the 49th veep, who is known for being a prolific cook.

“I think we should,” she said during a CNN town hall back in 2019, conceding that she felt paper straws needed to improve. “We do need to ban the plastic.”
Numerous studies have warned about the environmental impact of plastic, including in straws and bags.
Some research has indicated that single-use plastic bags can take decades or even centuries to fully break down. California, along with other states, has imposed a minimum of a 10-cent fine on single-use plastic bags to discourage their use.
Harris later abandoned her position on banning plastic straws during her 107-day stint as the 2024 Democratic presidential standard-bearer.
It was one of many instances in which she tacked to the center from some of the hardcore progressive stances she had taken during her unsuccessful 2020 bid. Harris ultimately dropped her 2020 bid before the Iowa caucuses as she fell in the polls and money dried up.
Harris and Emhoff had flown back to California on Monday after President Trump was sworn back into office.
Harris has publicly talked about her love for cooking for years, sharing recipes on her YouTube channel. London Entertainment Some of her neighbors in her ritzy Brentwood district in northern Los Angeles previously complained to The Post about the traffic snarls that her return has brought about.
Since her defeat by Trump last November, Harris has been tight-lipped about her next steps.

Many observers believe she has three main options in front of her: running for governor of California, waiting it out until 2028 to vie for president again and refraining from seeking office again.
Prior to the vice presidency, Harris was a Golden State senator, but both seats are currently taken, meaning she’d face a tough battle to return to the upper chamber.
Incumbent Democratic Gov. Gavin Newsom is term-limited, and his perch is up for grabs in the 2026 election.
If Harris jockeys for governor in 2026 or president in 2028, she will have to overcome lingering concerns about her 2024 defeat.
Richard Nixon was infamously defeated in his 1962 bid for California governor after having been a VP-turned-unsuccessful presidential hopeful thanks to John F. Kennedy.
Nixon went on to win the White House in 1968 and 1972.
Recent filings from Harris’ 2024 campaign showed that she set up Pioneer49 LLC in California. The LLC is named after her Secret Service codename “Pioneer” and her ranking as the 49th vice president.
In the time since her 2024 loss, Harris has consulted with family members, friends, allies and prominent luminaries — such as Hillary Clinton — to figure out her future, New York Magazine reported.
One thing she’s reportedly impressed upon her allies is that she doesn’t want to take any steps that could shut the door on a 2028 bid altogether.

Wegmans, Uber Eats To Offer Grocery Deliveries In MD
MARYLAND — Customers of the Wegmans Food Markets in Maryland can now have their grocery orders delivered directly to their doors via a new partnership with Uber Eats.
Starting this month, Uber Eats users can browse the app to order from Wegmans locations in Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey, and Washington, D.C. Customers can shop on the Uber Eats and Uber apps for products from restaurant-quality meals and artisan breads to fresh produce, cheese sourced from around the world, and grocery staples.
Uber One members pay no delivery fee and will receive a 5% discount on all Wegmans orders with a $35 minimum purchase. All new Wegmans’ consumers will receive up to 40% off their next order of $60 or more until Feb. 5.
The grocery chain has eight stores in Maryland:
“We’re thrilled to welcome Wegmans to the Uber Eats app this January,” said Hashim Amin, head of North American Grocery and Retail Delivery at Uber, in a news release. “Wegmans is synonymous with high-quality food and exceptional service, and now customers can easily order everything they need for game day entertaining — from fresh produce to prepared meals and snacks — delivered right to their door.”
By joining forces with Uber Eats, Wegmans officials said the company aims to bring more options to its customers, allowing them to shop when and how they want.
“Our goal is to make meals easy and help our customers live healthier, better lives through exceptional food,” said Erica Tickle, Wegmans Vice President of Marketing and Digital Growth.
Wegmans customers can build group orders with family members, place orders any time of day, and select replacement items with real-time tracking.
Wegmans Food Markets, Inc. is a regional supermarket chain with 111 stores located along the East Coast. The family company celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. Starting next month, Wegmans shoppers in the Rochester market have another option for grocery delivery.
On Jan. 23, Uber Eats announced a new partnership with the locally based supermarket chain.
Wegmans locations in Massachusetts, Maryland, Virginia, North Carolina, New Jersey and Washington, D.C., can now shop on the Uber Eats and Uber apps. Wegmans stores in New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware will be added to the app in February.
Convenience isn’t free. Uber service and delivery fees vary and, with tips, can add up.
But in its statement, the company pointed out that Uber One members will get free delivery and a 5% discount on Wegmans orders with a $35 minimum purchase, although taxes and fees may still apply. All new Wegmans consumers will get up to 40% off their next order of $60 or more until Feb. 5; again, plus taxes and fees.
Wegmans Food Markets is partnering with Uber Eats, it announced Jan. 23, 2025.
“This partnership is another step in our mission to make grocery shopping more convenient and accessible for everyone,” Hashim Amin, head of North American Grocery and Retail Delivery at Uber, said in a statement.

Customers can browse and order from an extensive selection of Wegmans products on the Uber Eats app, including fresh produce, prepared meals and everyday essentials. Customers can build group orders with family members, place orders at any time of day and access real-time order tracking.
Last October, Wegmans expanded its partnership with DoorDash, the largest online food ordering and delivery service in the United States.
In addition to delivering Wegmans Meals 2GO, DoorDash began offering Wegmans grocery delivery.
