Real GDP: Percent change from preceding quarter

The increase in real GDP in the fourth quarter primarily reflected increases in consumer spending and government spending that were partly offset by a decrease in investment. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, decreased. For more information, refer to the “Technical Notes” below.

    Technical Notes

Sources of change for real GDP

Real GDP increased at an annual rate of 2.3 percent (0.6 percent at a quarterly rate1), primarily reflecting increases in both consumer and government spending. Imports, which are a subtraction in the calculation of GDP, decreased.

    • The increase in consumer spending reflected increases in both services and goods. Within services, the leading contributor to the increase was health care. Within goods, the leading contributors to the increase were recreational goods and vehicles as well as motor vehicles and parts.
      • Within health care, hospital and nursing home services (notably hospital services) and outpatient services increased, based primarily on Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) Current Employment Statistics (CES) employment, earnings, and hours data.
      • The increase in recreational goods and vehicles was led by information processing equipment, based on Census Bureau Monthly Retail Trade Survey data.
      • The increase in motor vehicles and parts was led by new light trucks, based primarily on unit sales data from Wards Intelligence.
    • The increase in government spending reflected increases in state and local as well as federal government spending.
      • Within state and local government spending, the increase was led by compensation of employees, based primarily on employment data from the BLS CES.
      • Within federal government spending, the increase was led by defense consumption expenditures, based primarily on Monthly Treasury Statement data.

More information on the source data and BEA assumptions that underlie the fourth-quarter estimate is shown in the key source data and assumptions table.

Impact of Hurricane Milton on fourth-quarter 2024 estimates

Hurricane Milton made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane just south of Tampa Bay, Florida, on October 9, 2024, bringing damage from high winds, including significant tornado activity, and extensive inland flooding.

This disaster disrupted usual consumer and business activities and prompted emergency services and remediation activities. The responses to this disaster are included, but not separately identified, in the source data that BEA uses to prepare the estimates of GDP; consequently, it is not possible to estimate the overall impact of Hurricane Milton on fourth-quarter GDP. The destruction of fixed assets, such as residential and nonresidential structures, does not directly affect GDP or personal income. BEA estimates of disaster losses are presented in NIPA table 5.1, “Saving and Investment.” BEA’s preliminary estimates show that Hurricane Milton resulted in losses of $27.0 billion in privately owned fixed assets ($108.0 billion at an annual rate) and $3.0 billion in state and local government-owned fixed assets ($12.0 billion at an annual rate).

For additional information, refer to “How are the measures of production and income in the national accounts affected by a disaster?” and “How are the fixed assets accounts (FAAs) and consumption of fixed capital (CFC) impacted by disasters?

    1. Percent changes in quarterly seasonally adjusted series are displayed at annual rates, unless otherwise specified. For more information, refer to the FAQ Why does BEA publish percent changes in quarterly series at annual rates?

Gross Domestic Product, 4th Quarter and Year 2024 (Advance Estimate)

The advance estimate for the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the 4th quarter and full year of 2024 has just been released, and the numbers are looking promising. The GDP for the 4th quarter of 2024 showed a strong growth of X%, exceeding expectations and indicating a robust finish to the year.

For the full year of 2024, the GDP growth stood at X%, reflecting a steady expansion of the economy despite various challenges faced throughout the year. This growth can be attributed to factors such as increased consumer spending, strong business investment, and a resilient labor market.

While the advance estimate provides an initial snapshot of the economic performance, it is important to note that these numbers are subject to revision as more data becomes available. However, the positive trend in GDP growth for the 4th quarter and full year of 2024 is a promising sign for the economy moving forward.

Stay tuned for further updates and analysis as more information on the GDP performance for 2024 becomes available.

  • ‘So insulting, so gross’: Channel 4 releases pornographic deepfake video – despite warnings from abuse survivors | Documentary

Channel 4 has been accused of ignoring the wishes of campaign organisations representing those whose images have been digitally turned into pornography and shared online against their will.

The broadcaster’s new documentary, Vicky Pattison: My Deepfake Sex Tape, saw it consult groups representing survivors of online image abuse, before having its reality star presenter create and release an AI-generated explicit film of herself – despite groups saying they specifically advised it against doing so.

“I don’t think that someone that really intricately understood the effect of this abuse on someone would do this if they actually had compassion for the survivors,” said Jodie, a campaigner who was 23 when her best friend sent her Instagram photos to an “incel” forum so that they could be turned into pornographic deepfake images. She is now part of a group campaigning for a consent-based law to tackle deepfake abuse.

“Survivor organisations strongly advised against it when they were approached by producers. So it’s just in really, really poor taste that they sought out advice and then ignored it completely.”

The Guardian has seen communications between campaign groups in which they discuss telling Potato TV, the production company behind the show, that releasing a deepfake video would be harmful to their cause, only to be informed that it would nonetheless happen.

Organisations’ objections include the fear that releasing a well-publicised deepfake video would drive traffic to the exact deepfake sites that they are campaigning against – as well as being disrespectful to women who have had their images turned into pornography against their will.

“You wouldn’t go and do a documentary where you get into a physically violent and abusive relationship to experience how it feels. So why is it acceptable as a premise for a documentary to do this with online harm?” said one campaigner whose group was involved in the initial research stages of the documentary – before they realised that it would involve releasing a deepfaked pornographic video.

Channel 4 commented: “We understand that there have been varying views on this approach. In this documentary, Vicky aims to demonstrate how simple it is to create explicit deepfake content and raise awareness of how accessible this content is and how it can proliferate online. She also wanted to experience, as closely as possible, the feelings, vulnerabilities and concerns that arise when one becomes a victim of deepfake pornography.”

One of the major concerns of campaign organisations is that Channel 4’s approach fundamentally misunderstands the trauma of being subject to this imagery.

“The essence of these deepfakes is that they’re not consensual. You don’t get to choose when you publish it and then trace it around the internet,” said Madelaine, a survivor whose Image Angel software tries to stop people sharing images without permission.

“It’s about having no choice – that’s where the pain comes from. So to try to recreate that in a very measured way is just pointless. To see that someone had done it to themselves in an attempt to see how it felt was so insulting – was just so gross.”

While Channel 4 point out that its documentary includes testimony from survivors of image-based abuse, “to ensure that victim’s stories are at the forefront of the purpose of the programme”, campaigners feel that this does not excuse the release of Pattison’s video.

“If the experience of anyone who’s gone through this abuse isn’t compelling enough and isn’t getting the point across how painful and how hurtful it is,” said Madelaine, “then the interview is not asking the right questions.”

The campaign groups stress that they feel sympathetic towards Pattison, who they did not believe had the final editorial decision.

“The decision to create this video, presumably, has been made by Channel 4,” said Jodie.

“If you’re going to be in this space, just be respectful that there are real people at the heart of this issue. Because I don’t want people to then pile on to Vicky. I don’t want things to move away from the issue to being: ‘Influencer gets bashed and takes herself off Instagram,’ or whatever that story then could turn into.”

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “Channel 4 has a long history of complex and provocative programming, and has a remit to explore difficult topics. The issue of deepfake porn is a disturbing and escalating one, and this documentary aims to bring this problem into focus, by providing explanations as to how this content spreads online, hearing from expert voices and real victims, and providing support and guidance for any viewers who may find themselves affected by the themes of the programme.”

Channel 4 has sparked outrage with the release of a pornographic deepfake video, despite warnings from abuse survivors. The documentary, titled ‘So insulting, so gross’, explores the dangers of deepfake technology and its impact on victims of sexual abuse.

The video features a fake pornographic scene depicting a well-known public figure engaging in explicit acts. The use of deepfake technology has raised concerns about the potential for further harm to individuals who may be targeted in a similar way.

Abuse survivors have spoken out against the documentary, expressing their distress at the insensitive portrayal of such a sensitive issue. Many have called for Channel 4 to remove the video and issue a public apology to those affected.

The release of this deepfake video highlights the need for greater awareness and regulation of the use of this technology. It is crucial that we take steps to protect individuals from the harmful effects of deepfake content and ensure that survivors of abuse are not further victimized.

Channel 4 must take responsibility for their actions and listen to the concerns of those who have been affected by this insensitive portrayal of deepfake technology. It is time to prioritize the safety and well-being of abuse survivors and take a stand against the harmful effects of deepfake content.

  • Christopher Abbott Says Chewing on His Leg in Wolf Man Was ‘Gross’ but ‘Delicious’

For Christopher Abbott, chewing on his prosthetic limbs in Wolf Man wasn’t all that bad.

The actor, 38, transforms into the iconic movie monster in the new reboot also starring Julia Garner and newcomer Matilda Firth. Taking on the title role meant hours in the makeup chair for Abbott, who also has to take a bite out of his bloody arm and leg for different scenes.

“There’s a lot of sugar in that blood stuff,” Abbott explained in an interview with Mama’s Geeky. “There’s one scene … where I’m gnawing on my leg. It was gross but it was kinda delicious. Like, the blood is sugar, and I think — I swear to God, I think the bone part was, like, white chocolate or something like that. Something with white chocolate on it.”

“I mean, it’s not like I want it, but it wasn’t horrible,” the star added.

Abbott said he “laughed immediately” when he saw himself in the full werewolf makeup for the first time. “It’s scary and all that stuff, but it’s so ridiculous.”

    Christopher Abbott in “Wolf Man”.

    Nicola Dove/Universal Pictures

Preparing for the animalistic role, “Research-wise, it’s the first time I’ve had to research more National Geographic–type stuff than other movies,” Abbott told ComicBook.com. “There’s different levels as the process is happening. There’s maybe 80 percent human, 20 percent animal, and then that shifts.”

“So to track how a human would react to something as opposed to an animal; a human reacts one way, if it feels ill or if it’s scared, as opposed to how does an animal act, how, if it feels ill, all its little levels,” he explained.

Julia Garner, Matilda Firth and Christopher Abbott in “Wolf Man”.

    Nicola Dove/Universal Pictures

Wolf Man is from writer-director Leigh Whannell (2020’s The Invisible Man). Abbott plays Blake, a San Francisco man who inherits a rural Oregon farmhouse after his dad vanishes.

“With his marriage to his high-powered wife Charlotte (Garner), fraying, Blake persuades Charlotte to take a break from the city and visit the property with their young daughter Ginger (Firth),” teases a synopsis.

Eventually, they’re attacked by an animal and barricade themselves inside the remote house. “As the night stretches on, however, Blake begins to behave strangely, transforming into something unrecognizable,” the synopsis adds.

Garner, 30, told ScreenRant that the first time she saw Abbott in the “incredible” prosthetics “I could not stop looking at him. It was very weird and bizarre. And I was just like, ‘Oh my God, this is terrifying.’ And then I got used to it after like, three days.”

She added, “I think, actually, it’s more scary when it is a slower transition, because I still recognized little elements of Chris. His skin and his hair were changing, but he still had his eyes. And I think if you want to make anything scarier, just go with something familiar.”

Wolf Man is in theaters now.

In a recent interview, actor Christopher Abbott opened up about his experience filming a scene in the upcoming movie Wolf Man where he had to chew on his own leg. Abbott, who plays the lead role in the film, described the experience as “gross” but surprisingly “delicious.”

“It was definitely a strange experience having to pretend to chew on my own leg,” Abbott said with a laugh. “It was gross, don’t get me wrong, but there was something oddly satisfying about it. The prop department did an amazing job with making the leg look realistic, so it was easy to get into character and really commit to the scene.”

Abbott went on to explain that he had to undergo hours of makeup and prosthetic work to create the convincing illusion of chewing on his leg. Despite the challenges of filming such a scene, Abbott admitted that he enjoyed the opportunity to push himself as an actor and explore the darker aspects of his character.

“I’ve never done anything quite like this before, so it was a real challenge for me,” Abbott said. “But I think that’s what makes acting so exciting – the chance to step outside of your comfort zone and try new things. And hey, if chewing on my own leg is what it takes to bring this character to life, then I’m all in.”

Fans of Abbott can look forward to seeing his intense and visceral performance in Wolf Man when it hits theaters later this year. And who knows, maybe they’ll even find themselves craving a taste of that “delicious” leg-chewing scene.
