  • Plane wing strikes ground vehicle, injuring driver at O’Hare, police say

A taxiing airplane’s wing struck a United Airlines tug driving at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, flipping the vehicle over and pinning the driver underneath it, police said.

“The victim and driver of the tug, a 64-year-old male, was transported to Lutheran General Hospital in critical condition where he has been stabilized,” Chicago Police said in a statement. “The victim sustained head and lower body injuries.”

United identified the man as an employee, adding that the airline was “ensuring he receives any necessary support and care.”

The tug had been attempting to cross a runway at about 7 p.m. Saturday when it was struck, according to police and the Chicago Department of Aviation. Tugs are ground vehicles that help move aircraft, including helping them park, while they’re on the ground.

The plane that struck the tug had flown in from Kalamazoo, Michigan, as American Eagle flight 6181, which was operated by Air Wisconsin, according to American Airlines.

“Nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and team members, and we are reviewing this incident,” American said in a statement.

None of the crew members or passengers on the plane were injured, the airline said, adding, “Customers deplaned safely and were transported to the terminal.”

Air Wisconsin is an air carrier affiliated with American Eagle, which is American Airlines’ regional carrier network.

In a shocking incident at O’Hare International Airport, a plane wing struck a ground vehicle, injuring the driver. According to police reports, the incident occurred during a busy operation at the airport, causing chaos and confusion among travelers and airport personnel.

The driver of the ground vehicle was rushed to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, but the incident has raised concerns about safety protocols at the airport. Authorities are investigating the cause of the accident and looking into whether proper procedures were followed.

Passengers and onlookers were left stunned by the sight of the plane wing colliding with the ground vehicle, highlighting the dangers of working in such a high-stress environment. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in the aviation industry and the need for constant vigilance to prevent such accidents from happening again.

Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • How an arcane Treasury Department office is now ground zero in the war over federal spending

    Washington
    CNN
     —

A few weeks before Donald Trump was sworn in as president, members of his transition team went to the Treasury Department to talk about the handover of power.

But what is normally a routine discussion turned into an alarming series of interactions for a handful of top career Treasury officials.

Trump’s team, which included members of Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency peppered Treasury officials about one of the department’s most sensitive and critical functions: processing trillions of dollars in government payments a year.

Through a series of specific requests, Trump’s landing team attempted to lift the hood on the department’s Bureau of the Fiscal Service, an arcane branch that distributes nearly 90 percent of all federal payments, including Social Security benefits, tax refunds and payments to federal workers and contractors. That adds up to a billion annual transactions totaling more than $5 trillion.

A month later, this obscure Treasury office is now a key battlefront in a wider war being waged by Trump and his allies over federal spending. Signs of the fight have emerged this week.

The top civil servant at the Treasury Department, David Lebryk, is leaving unexpectedly after Trump-affiliated officials expressed interest in stopping certain payments made by the federal government, according to three people familiar with the situation.

According to one person familiar with the department, Trump-affiliated employees had asked about Treasury’s ability to stop payments. But Lebryk’s pushback was, “We don’t do that,” the person said.

“They seem to want Treasury to be the chokepoint on payments, and that’s unprecedented,” the person added, emphasizing that it is not the bureau’s role to decide which payments to make — it is “just to make the f-ing payments.”

Before Trump’s inauguration, members of his transition landing team wanted to know granular details about the bureau’s proprietary computer systems, including “each step in the disbursement process.” They also wanted to visit field offices where government workers, in Philadelphia or Kansas, work on computers that disburse payments.

The requests puzzled many career officials initially. The transition operation hadn’t requested substantive briefings on any of Treasury’s other critical areas of operation, multiple people familiar with the matter said. Veterans of past transition efforts, representing presidents of both parties, couldn’t recall precedent for the Trump team’s entreaty.

With Trump set to take office in a matter of days, officials found little reason to open the doors to the nation’s payment nerve center. But the persistence of the transition operation’s focus on the payments infrastructure rattled some Treasury officials.

The arcane process of cutting the government’s checks is normally overlooked by political leadership, though the incoming administration exhibited an odd interest in its inner workings, sources said — raising suspicions among career officials about the intent to tinker with a crucial financial pipeline that keeps the nation’s economy running.

In this 2023 photo, David Lebryk looks out a window in his office, in Washington, DC.

Tension between Lebryk and Trump political appointees, including those affiliated with DOGE, had been mounting, with sources telling CNN that things escalated this week after the Office of Management and Budget on Monday ordered a sweeping freeze on trillions of dollars in federal spending.

At the time, Lebryk was the acting Treasury Secretary. Trump’s pick to lead Treasury, Scott Bessent, was sworn in Tuesday. OMB rescinded that order a few days later after an uproar that’s still being litigated in court.

Lebryk’s departure, which he announced by email to his team on Friday morning, has shaken up career Treasury officials, several sources have told CNN this week.

Lebryk’s exit was first reported by the Washington Post, but the full scale of the tension inside the Treasury Department has not been previously reported. Lebryk didn’t respond to an inquiry from CNN on Friday morning.

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the ranking member of the Senate Banking Committee, called for an investigation on Friday following news of Lebryk’s departure.

“It’s alarming that Elon Musk is attempting to gain access to the Federal Government’s critical payment system, which is responsible for delivering Social Security checks, tax refunds, and Medicare benefits to Americans across the country,” Warren said in a statement provided to CNN. “It is equally alarming that Musk and the Trump Administration drove out the most senior career official at Treasury as the agency is already taking extraordinary measures to avoid a US default.”

Multiple Trump administration officials, including people at Treasury, didn’t respond to several requests for comment this week.

Musk himself acknowledged his interest in the Treasury Department’s payment processing in a middle-of-the-night post on his social media platform Saturday.

He wrote his team “discovered, among other things, that payment approval officers at Treasury were instructed always to approve payments, even to known fraudulent or terrorist groups. They literally never denied a payment in their entire career. Not even once.”

The post appeared to ignore the mechanisms already in place for Treasury to simply fulfill lawful payment decisions made by other agencies, and that the system’s value to the federal bureaucracy and the nation’s economy lies in its reliability.

Jack Lew, who ran the Treasury Department during President Barack Obama’s second term, said any attempt to disrupt payments made by the BFS would be dangerous to the world’s markets.

“The American people should not have to worry about political interference when it comes to receiving Social Security and other payments the fiscal service makes,” Lew told CNN. “And as the world’s reserve currency, it is crucial to maintain confidence around the globe that the US Government will make timely payments on its obligations.”

Some of the members of Trump’s landing team present for the initial transition meetings are now working at the Treasury Department.

Among them is Baris Akis, a Musk ally who is the co-founder of a venture capital firm, Human Capital. Akis’ presence raised alarms among some of the Treasury officials present for those early meetings, since he was not an official member of the incoming Trump administration and didn’t have a security clearance at the time, the sources told CNN.

Akis, along with a few others affiliated with Musk’s DOGE, has been in the Treasury building in recent days. Sources familiar with the department tell CNN they “rove around as a pack” — emphasizing how the group is working in the building in a way that is separate from the rest of the department’s staff.

Akis did not respond to a request for comment from CNN.

Elon Musk at Donald Trump's inauguration at the US Capitol in Washington, DC, on January 20.

Meanwhile, several blocks away in downtown Washington, Musk has asserted significant influence at the Office of Personnel Management, with at least one other employee formerly with Human Capital. The agency, which serves as the overarching human resources headquarters for the federal government, has historically been an operation driven by career officials who have worked across administrations of both parties.

Political appointees have long played a role, but according to one long-time official, the current iteration “is like a different world.”

That world is now populated with a number of Musk acolytes.

Amanda Scales, who previously worked for Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI after working for Human Capital, arrived at OPM as the agency chief of staff on Inauguration Day and has been the central figure identified with the agency’s sweeping efforts to restructure the federal workforce, multiple agency officials said. She previously worked at Akis’ company.

Brian Bjelde, the human resources chief for SpaceX, and Anthony Armstrong, a Morgan Stanley banker who worked on Musk’s purchase of Twitter, have also taken on substantial roles. Musk worked out of the OPM headquarters – with his surrogates by his side – last week, the officials said.

Trump’s nominee to run OPM, Scott Kupor, is awaiting confirmation but also holds deep ties to the Silicon Valley universe integral to Musk’s DOGE operations.

Nonprofits and Democrat-led states are already suing to try to block the Trump administration’s attempts to freeze federal spending. Despite the rescission of the memo directing the pause, they say the lawsuits need to continue, because of evidence the funding is being withheld.

On Friday, a federal judge in Rhode Island told the Trump administration it couldn’t block payments to states, nor could it try to revive stopping payments in any agency under Trump. More hearings are to come, including on Monday morning in a separate federal court, in DC.

The court fights show how any action by the administration that tampers with congressionally mandated funding could attract aggressive litigation.

The lawsuits haven’t yet touched upon the Bureau of the Fiscal Service’s work inside the Treasury Department.

This story has been updated with new reporting.

CNN’s Alayna Treene contributed to this report.

The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has traditionally been a relatively obscure office within the Treasury Department, responsible for overseeing the federal budget and ensuring that government funds are allocated efficiently and effectively. However, in recent months, the OMB has become ground zero in the war over federal spending as the Biden administration and congressional Republicans clash over budget priorities.

At the heart of the conflict is President Biden’s ambitious domestic agenda, which includes massive investments in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and other social programs. Republicans, on the other hand, are pushing for more limited government spending and are wary of the potential impact of Biden’s proposals on the federal deficit.

With the OMB playing a crucial role in crafting and implementing the federal budget, the office has become a focal point for both sides as they seek to influence the allocation of government funds. The stakes are high, with the outcome of this budget battle likely to shape the future of federal spending for years to come.

As the Biden administration and congressional Republicans continue to clash over budget priorities, all eyes are on the OMB to see how this arcane Treasury Department office will ultimately shape the course of federal spending in the coming years.

Made from 100% whole ground vanilla beans! Most ground vanilla powder on the market is made from “exhausted” beans – meaning they were used to make extract, dried, and then ground into powder after all flavors have been taken out. WE DO NOT participate in that practice and only offer the finest in whole ground vanilla powder!
Fine grind on this powder. Passed through an 80 mesh to remove particles – makes for a smoother blend and avoids (chewy) pieces in recipes. This will not dissolve in water.
Madagascar Vanilla adds a wonderfully sweet and rich aroma, elevating the flavor of your favorite beverage.
Ideal for uses in hot tea and coffee, homemade ice cream, and vanilla bean cheesecake!
Fully guaranteed for quality and purity. We hold ourselves to the highest standards because of our passion for all things vanilla.

  • Bodies, clothes, bags lie on ground after stampede at mass Hindu gathering in India

    By Saurabh Sharma

LUCKNOW, India (Reuters) – Bodies, clothes and bags lay scattered on the ground after a deadly stampede at the world’s largest gathering of humanity, the Maha Kumbh Mela in northern India, on one of the most auspicious days in Hinduism.

Witnesses described a mass of people rushing to take a pre-dawn dip at the confluence of the three sacred rivers – the Ganga, the Yamuna, and the mythical, invisible Saraswati, at Prayagraj, which Hindus believe absolves them of all sins and frees them from the circle of life and death.

See for yourself — The Yodel is the go-to source for daily news, entertainment and feel-good stories.

An unnamed official said at least seven people had died and dozens more had been injured in the stampede that took place in the early hours of Wednesday. But there was no confirmation of deaths or injuries from the local government, more than 12 hours after the incident.

“We saw people falling, lying one above another and crushing others to find a safe place. As we went ahead, we saw clothes, bodies of people, their bags, clothes and other belongings littered around,” Shweta Tripathi, a resident of Sant Kabir Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, told Reuters.

“It all happened so fast that I couldn’t process it and started crying. Luckily none from my group was hurt and we are all safe,” she said.

She saw a child and his relative crying next to bodies of their loved ones.

“I don’t think I am coming ever again,” she said.

The Maha Kumbh Mela is the world’s largest congregation of humanity, attracting some 400 million people over its six weeks. By comparison, the Haj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia drew 1.8 million last year.

By Tuesday nearly 200 million people had attended the 2025 festival since it started two weeks ago.

Visuals showed distressed attendees searching for their belongings amid piles of bags, clothes and water bottles thrown around. Some people were seen walking with containers carrying the holy water from the rivers.

Abhishek Kumar, who said he also attended the Mela with a few of his relatives saw people falling because of the crowd that surged to take a dip.

“Some people were returning after taking a dip and others were rushing towards the river. There was absolutely no co-ordination between the two crowds,” he told ABP news channel.

“Some of the women in our group were old and they tripped and fell. People walked over them in their hurry to get out,” he said.

Kumar said it took him and others more than an hour to get to the makeshift hospital near the site of the festival because of the surging crowds.

“From what we could tell, the women we brought here were not breathing, but we don’t know for sure. We just picked them up on our shoulders and ran.”

In a tragic turn of events, bodies, clothes, and bags were left scattered on the ground after a stampede occurred at a mass Hindu gathering in India. The chaos unfolded as thousands of devotees gathered to participate in the religious event, resulting in a rush of people that led to the deadly stampede.

The scene was described as chaotic and heartbreaking, with injured individuals lying on the ground amidst the debris. Rescue teams rushed to the scene to provide aid to the injured and transport them to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the cause of the stampede and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to prevent such tragedies in the future. Our thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families during this difficult time.

  • GE Aerospace T901 Engine Powers Black Hawk for First Time in Successful Ground Runs

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla., – January 29, 2025 – GE Aerospace (NYSE: GE) announced today the successful completion of initial ground runs for the T901 engine on a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter at Sikorsky’s West Palm Beach facility. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the Improved Turbine Engine Program’s Black Hawk testing.

“These tests mark a pivotal moment in history as the T901 engine powers the Black Hawk for the first time,” said Amy Gowder, president and CEO, Defense & Systems at GE Aerospace. “This achievement paves the way for a more powerful and mission-ready Black Hawk, equipping the U.S. Army with the ability to meet the growing demands of future operations.”

The ground runs validated the initial performance of all critical systems — including fuel, electrical, hydraulic, engine and flight control systems, and engine bay flow. Additionally, the tests acquired data from the comprehensive aircraft and engine instrumentation that will be used throughout the flight test program.

Factory testing continues in parallel with this integration effort. The data gathered during these tests continues to validate that the T901 engine is on track to meet the U.S. Army’s rigorous performance requirements.

“The successful ground runs of the T901 engine on the Black Hawk represent another critical milestone in our partnership with the U.S. Army,” said Tom Champion, GE Aerospace’s T901 program director. “This latest accomplishment not only validates the T901 engine’s unmatched performance but also reflect the unwavering effort of our team and strength of our partnership with both the U.S. Army and Sikorsky.”

The T901 engine builds on GE Aerospace’s unparalleled legacy of powering Black Hawk and Apache helicopters with the combat-proven T700 engine, which has logged more than 100 million flight hours over the past four decades. Developed in response to the Army’s call for increased power and reduced fuel consumption, the T901 delivers 50 percent more power, improved fuel efficiency, and reduced life cycle costs thanks to its simpler design and fewer parts. This efficiency translates to increased range, longer loiter time, and reduced maintenance and sustainment costs for the Army’s enduring fleet.

The T901 is a cornerstone of the Army’s modernization efforts, and today’s milestone underscores GE Aerospace’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge propulsion technology to meet the challenges of tomorrow’s missions.

  • UH-60 Black Hawk Begins Ground Tests With Far More Powerful T901 Engines

A U.S. Army UH-60M Black Hawk helicopter has completed initial ground runs with two of the new T901 Improved Turbine Engines. Developed under the Improved Turbine Engine Program (ITEP), the T901 was planned to power the now-canceled Future Attack Reconnaissance Aircraft (FARA) but will instead make its way into the UH-60 and the AH-64 Apache attack helicopter.

The engine maker GE Aerospace announced today that the initial ground runs had been completed at Sikorsky’s West Palm Beach facility. Conducted ahead of test flying, the tests confirmed the basic performance of the engine’s critical systems — including fuel, electrical, hydraulic, engine and flight control systems, and engine bay flow. At the same time, aircraft and engine instrumentation provided data that will help prepare for the flight test program, which is due to start before the end of this year.

The imagery of the UH-60M reveals a prominent orange-painted test boom carrying air data instrumentation jutting out from the nose. Other notable features include an orange dome on top of the main rotor boss as well as a prominent structure that covers the tail rotor hub. The exact functions of these are unclear, but they may also contain test equipment or be required to handle the more powerful engines.

“The test demonstrated the T901’s start-to-fly progression, including idle and fly modes, with the rotor brake disengaged,” Sikorsky said in a statement.

The initial ground runs were carried out by a combined U.S. Army and industry test team with the UH-60M operated by Army and Sikorsky pilots.

The T901 has been developed as a successor to the T700 engine that currently powers the UH-60 and AH-64 and is scaled to fit inside the same engine compartment. Compared to the previous engine, the T901 offers 50 percent more power — which translates to a maximum of roughly 3,000 shaft horsepower — bringing a considerable advantage in terms of hot-and-high performance, which is otherwise a significant limiting factor for rotorcraft. The new engine is also intended to bring improved fuel efficiency. On top of this, more powerful engines should ensure that the Black Hawk and Apache can carry heavier loads over greater distances. This is a factor that would be of critical importance in a future conflict across the vast distances of the Asia-Pacific theater, in particular, where helicopters are already struggling for relevance, due to their limited endurance.

Meanwhile, a simpler design and fewer parts should translate into reduced life-cycle costs. As well as traditionally manufactured components, the T901 also makes use of more exotic production techniques, including additive manufacturing and ceramic matrix composites.

Once installed in the UH-60 and AH-64, the T901 promises to provide these aircraft with increased range, longer loiter time, and reduced maintenance and sustainment costs.

The Army first got its hands on the T901 in October 2023, when two flight test engines were delivered for the FARA competitive prototype effort — one of the service’s highest-profile aviation programs. Sikorsky integrated the T901 into its Raider X aircraft and conducted ground runs. However, FARA was canceled in early 2024, a decision that we discussed in detail at the time.

Nevertheless, ground runs in the Raider X reduced the risk involved in Black Hawk integration and testing. In June last year, the first two T901 flight test engines for the UH-60M were handed over to Sikorsky.

For both the UH-60 and AH-64, more power is fast becoming essential, with the latest versions of these helicopters operating at much greater weights than when they were first introduced, as they have increasingly added more avionics, sensors, and weapons.

Speaking about the plan to put T901 engines in the AH-64 specifically,  T.J. Jamison, Boeing’s business development director for the Apache and for the AH-6 Little Bird, told TWZ last November: “The ability to bring ITEP into the Apache … sets you up for room for growth, extended range, reach, and payloads.” The ability to accommodate the new engines is something that’s ingrained in the latest V6.5 configuration of the Apache, which first flew in October of 2023 and is now coming off the production line.

Although Boeing has received a developmental contract for the integration of the T901 into the Apache, the U.S. Army has decided to prioritize putting the new engine into the Black Hawk. In the meantime, Boeing is using some of its own funds to continue the design work to get the new engine into the Apache.

For the Apache specifically, Boeing is also working on other improvements to the propulsion system, which will complement the new engines. As you can read about here, they include the Improved Tail Rotor Blade (ITRB) and Improved Tail Rotor Drive System (ITRDS). The ITRB is primarily focused on sustainment, ensuring the tail rotor blades can be more easily repaired and maintained, including on the battlefield, while ITRDS ensures that more power and authority are delivered to the tail rotor, something that will truly come into its own once harnessed to the power of the T901.

Returning to the UH-60M, the T901 is a fundamental part of the broader vision for a modernized Black Hawk fleet.

Speaking about what ITEP will provide the workhorse helicopter, Hamid Salim, vice president of Army and Air Force Systems at Sikorsky, noted that the re-engined Black Hawk would be able to “travel farther on less fuel and with more troops and cargo.” Salim also pointed specifically to the T901 enabling the UH-60M to take on new and emerging missions, “such as deploying and managing launched effects.”

Launched effects, previously referred to as air-launched effects (ALEs), are a category of varied uncrewed systems that you can read more about here. The new launched effects terminology reflects the fact they might be launched from land or maritime platforms, as well as crewed and uncrewed aircraft. They are a growing area of interest for the Army in particular, not only for rotary-wing platforms.

As well as the new engines and launched effects, the central pillars of the modernized Black Hawk include a Modular Open Systems Approach/digital backbone, which is set to improve safety and mission readiness while reducing unscheduled maintenance. Sikorsky is also increasingly working to reduce pilot workload and increase safety by incorporating autonomous technology, meaning the future Black Hawk should be able to operate with or without any humans on board.

New engine offerings could make the H-60 series and the AH-64 even more attractive to other potential customers. Both are still very much in production and the prospect of much more power in the future will only boost export prospects for what are already leaders in their respective market segments.

For the U.S. Army, meanwhile, re-engining the Black Hawk and the Apache will also go some way toward ensuring these older designs can contribute, even to a limited degree, to what officials are already talking about in terms of a revolution in air assault operations — one that they expect will be heralded by the arrival of the Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) tiltrotor.

An artist’s concept of the Army’s Future Long-Range Assault Aircraft (FLRAA) tiltrotor. Bell

An entirely new kind of aircraft, the Army expects FLRAA will provide it with a vastly improved set of speed, range, and survivability metrics.

In the past, TWZ has questioned how the Black Hawk and the Apache might be able to better keep pace with FLRAA’s obvious difference in speed and range. While new engines won’t offer performance comparable with FLRAA, they will, at the very least, provide a significant advance over what today’s Black Hawk and Apache are capable. At the same time they will help bridge the gap to FLRAA. And even after this new aircraft enters service and fills the flightlines of Army Airfields, the UH-60 and the AH-64 are slated to continue soldiering on.
