  • Employee Resource Groups, Allyship And Partnerships

Be careful what you believe from the latest anti-DEI headlines. Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is not going away. It’s forecasted to grow at a compounded annual growth rate of 12% according to PR Newswire, primarily through Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and partnerships.

Yes, there has been pushback from conservative lobbyist groups like the National Center for Public Policy Research. Meta, Walmart, Lowe’s, Tractor Supply, Ford, Toyota, Harley-Davidson, Indian Motorcycle, Polaris, Stanley Black & Decker, DeWalt Tools, Craftsman, Caterpillar, Boeing, Coors and Jack Daniel’s have notably pivoted their DEI strategies in recent months partially due to outside pressure.

However, there are two sides to every story. The story that is not being told is the one of positive support for DEI. At least 10 boards have pushed back on the lobbyists, urging shareholders to vote against DEI bans. Costco, Apple, Boeing, Cigna, Coca-Cola, Citigroup, John Deere, Progressive, MGM, and PepsiCo have vocalized their support in recent months publicly for DEI. Cisco and JP Morgan Chase’s CEOs have made public statements defending their corporate DEI programs.

While there are a number of justifiable concerns for organizations to pivot their DEI strategies, abandoning them completely is a mistake.

    What’s Really Going On?

Corporate DEI work is still legal and is growing, not dying. According to Working IDEAL: “An Executive Order cannot prohibit private employers from engaging in lawful strategies to advance equal opportunity for all under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.” Corporate DEI work is legal, however, rarely employed tactics like hiring and promotion quotas, and mandatory training may be open to legal challenges.

DEI pushback is not new. DEI work hit a peak in 2020-2021, then retracted in 2022-2023, to level out in 2024. Those that were not serious about DEI already stopped doing the work a long time ago. Those serious are quietly embedding it into their organizations because it is the right thing to do and keeps them out of harmful lawsuits and activists way.

DEI is about education and debiasing systems, not hiring quotas and mandatory DEI training. A 2022 Resume Builder found that 52% of US hiring managers believe their company practices “reverse discrimination” in hiring, with one in six managers told to stop hiring white men. This was never the intention of DEI. Diversifying hiring pools, using objective criteria and equipping managers with inclusive hiring tools are best practices. Steer clear of hiring and promotion quotas, and mandatory DEI training, as they are the most likely tactics to be legally challenged.

Exclusion is more costly than DEI. Accenture found that globally, there is $3.7 trillion on the table annually by not having inclusive work cultures. The cost of exclusion shows up in employee attrition, discrimination and pay equity lawsuits, lower revenues and profitability.

Some well-intentioned organizations may be pivoting their language from DEI in defense. According to David Glasgow, a lawyer and executive director at the Meltzer Center for Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging at New York University School of Law said, “It doesn’t really matter what you call it (DEI)…if you’re in substance engaging in practices that are legally risky, then it will be just as risky as it was before.” Glasgow notes that while anti-DEI activists are searching company websites for DEI, there has to be substantial discriminatory activity for them to have a serious legal case.

Given that DEI is expected to grow by 12% annually through 2030, how will it survive and thrive given this pushback?

    1. Employee Resource Groups
    2. Allyship programs
    3. Partnerships

    Employee Resource Groups

Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are safe havens for people from historically marginalized groups to empathize with each other’s stories, have space for candid conversations about adversity, and to bring in allies to learn more about how they can be supportive. Ninety percent of organizations have ERGs, and they are not expected to dissolve. Even those that have adjusted their DEI strategies have kept their ERGs intact (e.g. Walmart). The subtle shift has been to engaging allies so that they’re not excluding the dominant group.

Engaging allies (those that have power and can help address issues of exclusion) is a best practice as it often helps with the necessary resourcing and helping to address systemic issues. Including allies needs to be intentional. Successful ERGs set boundaries for allies to understand their role, educate allies on how best to contribute, and most importantly, how to take real action.

    Allyship Programs

Beyond ERGs, allyship programming is critical to the long-term success of DEI. People in the dominant group, especially senior leadership teams tend to be majority white men, and often do not understand if they are wanted in DEI efforts. Sometimes, they don’t understand DEI because of the lack of lived experience, and struggle to take action, and can disengage because they may feel like the enemy. Despite practitioner’s best efforts, DEI does have the opportunity to further engage these dominant group members.

Allyship programs can help bridge the gap for those with limited lived experiences with issues of diversity. Successful allyship programs focus on education, community, and most importantly, action. Education is critical for people to understand the full context before engaging in action. Having a community of other allies around them helps them not feel alone or too vulnerable when they’re trying to adjust and do things more inclusively.

    Partnerships

Partnerships with community organizations, experts and thought leaders in DEI is also a best practice. For example, the Human Rights Campaign, despite the negative news headlines about organizations withdrawing from their index, grew by 28% in 2024 and is expected to increase more in 2025. Participating in indices like the Human Rights Campaign is not illegal. Organizations can continue to share their data and benchmark against their peers to create healthy competition for inclusion.

Organizations also need to partner in their local communities on issues that matter to them that are aligned with their values. If inclusion is embedded in the company’s culture and values, it makes sense to focus on community issues of exclusion. That could be providing volunteer opportunities in the community, helping address healthcare or education challenges for historically marginalized groups, or donating money to organizations aligned with their mission and values.

The future of DEI is more optimistic that you might be led to believe. It’s clear that Employee Resource Groups, allyship programs and partnerships will continue to thrive. Business leaders need to focus less on the noise around the work, and just do the work. Their bottom line will benefit.

This is an unprecedented moment for corporate leaders to take a stand against these bullying tactics and state their inclusive intentions. This will be your competitive advantage. People remember and reward those that speak truth to power, especially when it feels hard.

Want to be an even more inclusive ally? Stay in the know with allyship and inclusion tips each week in our community.

Employee Resource Groups, Allyship And Partnerships: Fostering a Culture of Inclusion and Belonging

In today’s diverse and globalized workplace, it is essential for organizations to create a sense of belonging and inclusion for all employees. Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) are a powerful tool in achieving this goal, providing a platform for employees to connect, support each other, and drive positive change within their organizations.

Allyship is another crucial component of fostering an inclusive workplace culture. Allies are individuals who actively support and advocate for marginalized or underrepresented groups, using their privilege to amplify their voices and push for equity and equality.

Partnerships with external organizations and community groups can also play a significant role in promoting diversity and inclusion within the workplace. By collaborating with these entities, organizations can access valuable resources, expertise, and perspectives that can help drive meaningful change and create a more inclusive environment for all employees.

In summary, Employee Resource Groups, allyship, and partnerships are all essential tools in building a culture of inclusion and belonging within organizations. By leveraging these resources and fostering collaboration and support across all levels of the organization, companies can create a workplace where every employee feels valued, respected, and empowered to bring their whole selves to work.

  • As ICE knocks on doors in the suburbs, immigrant groups push solidarity

Federal agents knock on the door of a residence in Lyons during an immigration enforcement action over the weekend. Immigration authorities also have deployed in Palatine, Mundelein, Deer Park and Round Lake, advocates say.
    Bloomberg

As deportations ordered by President Donald Trump spread across the suburbs, advocacy groups said they’re intensifying efforts to keep Latino immigrants informed and unified amid unease.

Federal authorities have deployed in multiple towns in recent days, including Deer Park, Palatine, Mundelein, Round Lake and Waukegan, immigrant leaders said.

“Rightfully so, our communities are fearful, they’re anxious, they’re stressed,” said Dulce Ortiz, executive director of Mano a Mano Family Resource Center in Waukegan.

Last weekend, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers “were just knocking on doors at an apartment complex in Waukegan,” Ortiz said. If the agency is “targeting people with criminal backgrounds, why aren’t they holding warrants?”

Immigrant Solidarity DuPage Coordinator Cristobal Cavazos headed to Palatine on Sunday after hearing of a contingent of ICE officers parked near a popular Hispanic grocery store.

“They say, they’re just looking for criminals, don’t worry. But in the process, they nab anybody that they can get,” Cavazos said.

Trump Border Czar Tom Homan told News Nation Wednesday that of “last count there were like 700,000 illegal aliens in this country with a criminal conviction. That’s our No. 1 target.”

Itzel Sernas was unnerved Sunday afternoon when a number of vehicles parked near the Deer Park Mexican restaurant where she works and agents with the ICE insignia got out.

Immigration advocates provided the Daily Herald with video taken at a Palatine apartment complex where residents saw ICE officials deployed. ICE has not confirmed any actions in Palatine yet.
    Courtesy of Immigrant Solidarity DuPage

The officials surveyed the restaurant for a while and left.

“We were a little shocked,” Sernas said. “It is scary, but it’s sad (for) people who have lived here for so many years and are working hard. Why don’t you look for the people who are doing bad stuff instead of coming here and looking for people who are working hard?”

ISD and Mano a Mano spent weeks prior to the inauguration holding “Know Your Rights” sessions. Immigrant Solidarity is telling people, “Don’t talk, don’t open the door, don’t sign (anything) and ask to speak with a lawyer.”

“If they have no warrant, there is no obligation to open the door,” Cavazos said.

Still, undocumented longtime residents with jobs and families are looking over their shoulders, he noted.

“We’re trying to combat this paranoia with direct action and solidarity.”

ABC 7 reported an Elgin man without a criminal record was swept up by U.S. Marshals who had an arrest warrant for a relative Tuesday.

“I saw they were taking my dad through the side door. He was already in handcuffs; so, I didn’t know much,” daughter Janeth Lopez told ABC.

“No family deserves this,” she said in a GoFundMe post.

ICE has not yet responded to a Daily Herald request for information on suburban enforcement.

“Chicago was an outstanding operation,” Homan said Wednesday, adding agents have removed sexual predators, child predators, sex offenders, convicted murderers and numerous gang members.

“These were bad guys. It’s a dangerous operation, but we made Chicago a lot safer. The streets are a lot safer. It’s just a shame we can arrest these guys in the county jail, but they’re a sanctuary city, they won’t let us into the county jail.”

Other federal agencies like the FBI are assisting and “we want to increase the number of teams. We want to get the deportations up,” Homan said.

A “Know Your Rights” session is conducted by Immigrant Solidarity DuPage in December.

Meanwhile, Viator House of Hospitality in the Northwest suburbs is not expecting any issues.

The not-for-profit organization hosts young men who escaped violence and crime in foreign countries and are legally in the U.S. pursuing asylum claims. Residents either work or attend school while at Viator.

“We are confident that their rights to be in the United States will be respected during this era,” Executive Director the Rev. Corey Brost said.

In recent days, reports have surfaced of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents knocking on doors in suburban neighborhoods, spreading fear and uncertainty among immigrant communities. In response, immigrant advocacy groups have been working tirelessly to push for solidarity and support among residents.

The presence of ICE in suburban areas has heightened concerns among immigrant families, who fear being separated from their loved ones and facing deportation. In response, organizations such as the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) and local immigrant rights groups have been organizing Know Your Rights workshops, providing legal resources, and creating safe spaces for individuals to seek support.

One of the key messages from these groups is the importance of standing in solidarity with immigrant communities during this challenging time. By coming together and showing support for our neighbors, we can create a strong network of protection and advocacy against unjust immigration enforcement.

As ICE continues to target neighborhoods across the country, it is imperative that we stand united and speak out against these harmful actions. By working together to support and protect immigrant families, we can build a more inclusive and compassionate society for all. Let’s show our solidarity and stand up for justice.

JOHANNESBURG – To counter the perceived threat of terror from Iran and jihadi groups, South Africa’s chief rabbi is setting up a specialist task force.

Chief Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein was spurred into creating the group after a bomb attack at a Jewish center in Cape Town last month. An improvised explosive device was thrown at the Samson Community Center but failed to detonate. The center is home to several South African Jewish organizations.

The “Counter-Terror Task Force” will make recommendations to protect places of worship, schools and community centers.

“South Africa’s Jewish community, like other Jewish communities globally, faces heightened risk of terror attacks,” Goldstein told Fox News Digital. “The Iranian regime is the world’s chief exponent of state-sponsored terror, and have made it their strategy to target Jewish communities worldwide. With this in mind, the findings of the task force will be applied not just in South Africa, but globally.”

GLOBAL RISE IN ANTISEMITISM LEAVES JEWISH COMMUNITY ISOLATED, RABBI SAYS WORLD AT ‘A TIPPING POINT’

He added, “In addition, Africa has over the past decade become a hub for global jihadi terror, with the threat indices dramatically increasing as groups such as al-Shabab, Boko Haram and ISIS operate throughout the continent.”

The task force comprises global authorities on terror: Admiral Mike Hewitt, former deputy director for Global Operations for the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the U.S. Defense Department, Dean Haydon, former senior national coordinator for counter-terrorism in the United Kingdom, Major General David Tsur, former commander of the counter-terrorism unit in the Israeli Police, and Andre Pienaar, co-founder of South Africa’s Directorate of Special Operations, also known as the Scorpions.

The chief rabbi added, They will be marshalling additional resources and personnel as and when needed.”

Goldstein said the force’s immediate objective “is to secure the South African Jewish community against attacks. The broader objective is to better ensure the safety of all South Africans, and citizens of countries around the world.”

He continued, “Across Africa, especially, it is Christians far more than Jews who suffer the consequences of Jihadist terror. Each year, Jihadists murder thousands of Christians for their faith.”

South Africa Chief Rabbi Dr. Warren Goldstein. (The Office of The Chief Rabbi)

Goldstein told Fox News Digital that the South African government’s stance at the International Court of Justice, where it has accused Israel of genocide over the war in Gaza, has “stigmatized Jews not only within the country but globally.”

INCOMING TRUMP ADMIN, CONGRESS SHOWDOWN LOOMS WITH SOUTH AFRICA OVER SUPPORT FOR RUSSIA, US FOES

However, Goldstein added that the views of the government here are not necessarily the views of the people. “Against that it must be understood that the South African public generally holds moderate and pragmatic views on Israel, and levels of domestic antisemitism remain very low by Western standards.”

“There were 128 recorded antisemitic incidents in 2024 in South Africa,” Professor Karen Milner, national chair of the Jewish Board of Deputies in South Africa, told Fox News Digital. “This makes it the second-highest number of incidents since record keeping began in 1998. The highest number of incidents was recorded in 2023 (182). However, 63% of these occurred immediately following the events of October 7 (the Hamas attack in Israel).

“The early months of 2024 were impacted greatly by the wave of antisemitism that immediately followed the October 7 attacks in Israel,” Milner continued. “It is worth noting that the majority of the antisemitic incidents recorded in 2024 were verbal assaults, targeted hate mail, or antagonism, with very few incidents graduating into physical assault.”

Milner concluded, adding, “with that said, antisemitism remains much lower than other comparable countries, and South Africa remains a safe space in which Jews can identify as Jewish and practice their religion in relative security.”

Fox News Digital reached out to the South African Justice and Police Departments but did not receive a response.

In response to growing concerns over the threat of terrorism from Iran and jihadi groups in Africa, a new Task Force has been created to address and counter these fears. Led by a coalition of African nations, the Task Force aims to enhance security measures, intelligence sharing, and coordination efforts to combat the rising threat of terrorism in the region.

The Task Force brings together experts in counterterrorism, law enforcement, and military operations to devise comprehensive strategies and tactics to effectively combat and neutralize threats posed by Iran and jihadi groups. With a focus on proactive and preventative measures, the Task Force is dedicated to safeguarding communities and preserving peace and stability in the region.

Through collaboration with international partners and regional organizations, the Task Force will work towards disrupting terrorist networks, dismantling their operations, and preventing further attacks. By leveraging the collective strengths and resources of participating nations, the Task Force is poised to make significant strides in countering the evolving threat landscape in Africa.

As the Task Force begins its operations, the international community stands united in support of its mission to combat terrorism and protect the safety and security of all citizens in Africa. Together, we are committed to standing against the forces of terror and ensuring a brighter and more secure future for the region.

Cluster analysis is a powerful data analysis technique that aims to group similar data points together in order to uncover patterns and relationships within a dataset. By organizing data into clusters, researchers can gain insights into the underlying structure of the data and identify meaningful subgroups within the dataset.

In this post, we will provide an introduction to cluster analysis, including an overview of different clustering algorithms, the key steps involved in the clustering process, and the various applications of cluster analysis in different fields.

Clustering algorithms can be broadly categorized into two main types: hierarchical clustering and partitioning clustering. Hierarchical clustering involves creating a hierarchy of clusters that can be visualized in a dendrogram, while partitioning clustering involves dividing the dataset into non-overlapping clusters.

The key steps involved in the clustering process include selecting a suitable clustering algorithm, determining the number of clusters, preprocessing the data, and evaluating the quality of the clusters. It is important to note that the choice of clustering algorithm and the number of clusters can significantly impact the results of the analysis, so careful consideration should be given to these factors.

Cluster analysis has a wide range of applications in various fields, including market segmentation, image and pattern recognition, anomaly detection, and bioinformatics. By using cluster analysis, researchers can uncover hidden patterns in data, make informed decisions, and gain valuable insights into complex datasets.

In conclusion, cluster analysis is a powerful data analysis technique that can help researchers uncover meaningful patterns and relationships within a dataset. By understanding the key concepts and techniques of cluster analysis, researchers can effectively analyze and interpret their data to make informed decisions and drive actionable insights.

FBI issues warning about organized crime groups targeting pro athletes

The FBI is warning sports leagues about crime organizations targeting professional athletes following a string of burglaries at the homes of prominent NFL and NBA players.

The athletes’ homes are targeted due to the perception they may contain high-end goods like designer handbags, jewelry, watches and cash, the FBI said in a Liaison Information Report obtained by ABC News.

The NFL and NBA already have issued security alerts to their players after the break-ins, some of which have come when players were away with their teams for road games. The NFL’s alert says homes of professional athletes across multiple sports have become “increasingly targeted for burglaries by organized and skilled groups.”

Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks is the latest professional athlete whose home has been burglarized. Lara Beth Seager, the star guard’s business manager, told multiple media outlets Saturday there was a break-in at Doncic’s home. Seager said nobody was home at the time of the incident Friday night, and Doncic filed a police report.

Star NFL quarterbacks Patrick Mahomes of Kansas City and Joe Burrow of Cincinnati, along with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, have been victims, as have NBA players Bobby Portis of Milwaukee and Mike Conley Jr. of Minnesota.

Organized theft groups from South America use publicly available information and social media to identify athletes’ habits and track their comings and goings, the FBI report said. The groups use technology allowing them to bypass alarm systems, block wireless internet connections and disable devices, cover security cameras and hide their identities.

Athletes are encouraged to report suspicious activity, keep records of valuables and where they are kept, employ extra security and use caution on social media. The FBI also suggested athletes avoid posting pictures of valuables, the interior of their homes and real-time posts when on vacation.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning to professional athletes about the increasing threat of organized crime groups targeting them for illegal activities. These criminal organizations are known to exploit athletes’ wealth, fame, and influence for their own gain.

The FBI has identified several ways in which organized crime groups may target pro athletes, including money laundering, drug trafficking, and fraud schemes. These groups often use the athletes’ status to gain access to high-profile events and influential people, making it easier for them to carry out their illegal activities.

With the rise of social media and the digital age, athletes are more vulnerable than ever to being targeted by organized crime groups. The FBI is urging athletes to be vigilant and cautious about who they associate with and what opportunities they pursue.

Professional athletes are advised to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement and to carefully vet any business partnerships or investment opportunities. By staying informed and taking proactive measures to protect themselves, athletes can help prevent themselves from falling victim to organized crime groups.
