Alabama football hiring Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator
Kalen DeBoer is getting the band back together. Alabama football is bringing on Ryan Grubb as offensive coordinator, reuniting DeBoer with the man who helped him bring Washington to the national championship game in 2023.
Alabama announced the news Sunday through its Yea Alabama NIL collective. DeBoer had not ruled out the possibility when asked about it during a media availability at the Senior Bowl.
When DeBoer left the Huskies to join Alabama after Nick Saban retired in January of 2024, Grubb initially followed. However, he then decided to remain in Seattle, taking the OC job with the NFL’s Seahawks.
After one season, Grubb was fired by the Seahawks. That move opened the door to reunite with DeBoer in Tuscaloosa.
After Grubb headed back to Seattle, Nick Sheridan was promoted to Alabama’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. The release did not mention his future.
Grubb first worked for DeBoer at Sioux Falls in 2007. The two also worked together at Eastern Michigan and Fresno State, before going to Washington in 2022.
Now back in Tuscaloosa, in a job he first interviewed for ahead of the 2023 season, when Saban was still in charge, Grubb will have work to do. Alabama’s offense was inconsistent throughout DeBoer’s first season, leading to the Crimson Tide’s first season with less than 10 wins since 2007.
He’ll immediately have a quarterback battle on his hands, with Jalen Milroe’s departure for the NFL Draft. Ty Simpson, Austin Mack and Keelon Russell will be the major players in the QB room this offseason

Mobile, Ala. – Jalen Milroe, CJ Dippre, Tim Smith, and James Brunip have begun practice at the Senior Bowl in Mobile. While the Crimson Tide stars were practicing on the field, Kalen DeBoer met with the media.
Alabama fans were discontent with the offensive production in 2024, leading many to call for the re-hiring of three-week Alabama offensive coordinator Ryan Grubb, who spent two seasons and three weeks with Kalen DeBoer in Washington and Tuscaloosa before accepting the same position with the Seattle Seahawks. Grubb was fired in January after just one season in Seattle.
Grubb’s open job status has led many Crimson Tide fans to clamor for his rehiring. While the logistics of the move could be messy—Nick Sheridan still has one season left on his contract as Alabama’s offensive coordinator—there could be ways to work around this to get Grubb on the staff.
Grubb and DeBoer are close friends and have worked together since their days at Sioux Falls. Alabama head coach Kalen DeBoer was asked about a reunion on Tuesday in Mobile.
“{Ryan Grubb and I] go way back,” DeBoer said in Mobile on Monday. “He’s a great friend of mine, and I think the world of him as a person and a football coach. I know he’s working through his process, kind of after what last season brought. So, just kind of seeing what he does there. I’m here for him whenever he needs me.”
The door could be creaked on a Ryan Grubb reunion, based on DeBoer’s comments.
