  • Lakers Rumors Roundup: Myles Turner update, searching for point guard

The trade deadline is one week away and the Lakers are still searching for the right answer to their problems.

Is that a center? A point guard? A third star? A combination of those three?

The front office will assess those questions in the coming days. While fans wait, let’s catch up on the latest rumors and reports.

    Myles on the move?

One of the names to emerge over the last week has been Myles Turner from the Pacers. Effectively, there was no report linking him to the Lakers other than people citing a history of links to the Lakers and Turner’s contract expiring at season’s end.

Naturally, since this didn’t have a starting point, there really isn’t much smoke to this one, at least according to longtime NBA reporter Marc Stein. In his latest Substack newsletter, Stein said the Pacers are only looking to move Turner if they get another starting center in return.

Yet the prevailing leaguewide sense, one week out from the trade buzzer, is that the Pacers do not want to trade Turner.

There is a strong belief among some league personnel that Indiana would need to see proposals that return a starting-level center to even consider the notion.

There are three-team machinations of deals that could potentially send the Pacers a starting center while landing the Lakers Turner, but those are complicated deals. And those are only possible if the Pacers want to move Turner, which remains to be seen.

    Center not the biggest need?

While there’s been plenty of talk about the center position — and more to come shortly — that isn’t the only position of need for the Lakers currently.

After trading away D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers have been short on playmakers on the roster. There has been a heavy reliance on Austin Reaves and LeBron James in the starting lineup while Gabe Vincent’s recent strong play has come at a critical time.

However, that might not be a sustainable formula moving forward, and the Lakers know it. According to Dan Woike of the LA Times in a recent extensive piece, the need for another ball handler is very apparent even to those in the locker room.

A center also is not the Lakers’ lone need. According to players inside the locker room discouraged from publicly discussing trade targets, there’s a desire for more playmaking, a need that’s become clear since the team traded D’Angelo Russell.

As much as the discussion has been about the need for center, perhaps equally important is the need to bring in another guard. With Vincent out, the Lakers have to turn to one of Shake Milton or Bronny James and, as fans saw on Tuesday against the Sixers, those are not good solutions.

    Looking for a big man

Ultimately, the Lakers’ trade deadline will probably be graded on whether they land another center. Although this has been a need for some time, Anthony Davis’ public remarks amplified the pressure on the front office to find an upgrade.

But the Lakers are not alone in searching for a center. As Woike also noted in his piece, the price for big men is high as the deadline nears.

In conversations with executives inside and outside of the organization, it’s become clear that the costs for starting-caliber NBA centers are high — particularly ones good enough to force the Lakers into the kind of seismic change that moving Davis to power forward and LeBron James to small forward would cause.

Trading for a big man just for the sake of bringing in another center isn’t going to solve any problems. Finding one that can both complement AD and also excel without him is quite the needle to thread.

But, Woike still reports that the team is looking for potential options.

The Lakers have been actively exploring adding a big man, though it’s not being done recklessly, according to NBA executives. Concerns about cost, fitting Redick’s preferred style of play and the ripples from moving Davis — namely playing James major minutes at small forward — are being weighed.

With Walker Kessler, the No. 1 target for most fans, seemingly unavailable at the deadline, it really thins the list of players who fit all the criteria the Lakers need.

The Lakers aren’t in a particularly easy situation to find upgrades, but they certainly are under a lot of pressure to do so. Sure sounds like fun!

The Los Angeles Lakers are not wasting any time in their quest to fill out their roster for the upcoming season. With the trade deadline looming, the Lakers are actively looking for a point guard to bolster their backcourt.

One of the names that has been circulating in Lakers rumors is Myles Turner of the Indiana Pacers. The 25-year-old center is known for his shot-blocking prowess and would provide a defensive anchor in the paint for the Lakers. However, reports indicate that the Pacers are asking for a hefty price in return for Turner, potentially including a combination of draft picks and young players.

While the Lakers are intrigued by the possibility of adding Turner to their lineup, they are also exploring other options at the point guard position. With LeBron James and Anthony Davis leading the way, the Lakers are looking for a playmaker who can facilitate the offense and take pressure off of their star duo.

Names like Kyle Lowry of the Toronto Raptors and Lonzo Ball of the New Orleans Pelicans have been mentioned in Lakers rumors as potential targets. Both guards bring different skill sets to the table, with Lowry known for his leadership and championship experience, while Ball is a young and talented playmaker with room to grow.

As the trade deadline approaches, Lakers fans will be eagerly anticipating any updates on potential acquisitions. With a championship on the line, the Lakers are leaving no stone unturned in their pursuit of adding talent to their roster. Stay tuned for more Lakers rumors as the deadline draws near.

  • Star Florida guard limps to locker room vs. Vols

This was the last thing Florida Gators basketball fans wanted to see on Saturday. In the middle of the action on the road against No. 8 Tennessee, standout guard Walter Clayton Jr. landed awkwardly on his ankle and he was in a ton of pain on the hardwood.

It took several moments for him to get up and play even had to be stopped with him down. Eventually, Clayton was helped up, but he couldn’t make his way back to the bench. Instead, he immediately turned around and headed straight to the locker room, limping his way back with the help of trainers. This looked like a serious injury for him, which hade fans worried.

Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. back on the floor vs. Tennessee

Thankfully, though, while things looked pretty bad at first, Florida came out of the locker room for the second half and the team announced that Clayton was good to go. When Clayton first went down, countless people back home feared the worst, thinking that he’d potentially miss extensive time.

Clayton has been unreal to watch for Florida this season and he’s one of the main reasons why this team is ranked No. 5 in the country. In order for the Gators to keep playing at a high level and potentially make noise in March and early April, Florida will need Clayton close to 100 percent.

Fortunately for Todd Golden, Clayton’s ankle is just fine and he’s going to keep balling out for the team. Entering Saturday’s tilt against the Vols, the 6-3, 195-pounder was averaging 17.8 points and 4.0 assists per contest.

In a heartbreaking turn of events, star Florida guard was forced to limp to the locker room during the game against the Vols. This injury could have major implications for the team’s season and hopes for a successful run in the tournament. Stay tuned for updates on the player’s condition and how it may impact the Gators moving forward. #FloridaBasketball #InjuryUpdate #GatorNation.

  • Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. returns in second half after suffering apparent ankle injury vs. Tennessee

UPDATE: Walter Clayton Jr. will attempt to give it a go in the second half, according to a UF spokesperson. The initial story is below:

The No. 5-ranked Florida Gators have been fortunate from an injury standpoint throughout the first 20 games of the 2024-25 regular season, yet UF’s luck took a turn for the worst in the first half of Saturday’s contest at Tennessee.

Facing an under-manned Volunteers team playing without standout guard Zakai Zeigler and forward Igor Milicic Jr., the Gators found themselves in a tight contest as the first half neared its conclusion, with leading scorer Walter Clayton Jr. accounting for 10 points to lead all scorers.

However, the senior guard had to be helped to the locker room after suffering an apparent ankle injury with 1:07 remaining in the first half. Clayton appeared to be in considerable pain as he was helped to Florida’s bench before departing for the locker room.

Having led by four midway through the first half, the Gators entered the locker room trailing to the Vols, 24-21.

Clayton, a Lake Wales native who spent his first two seasons of collegiate basketball at Iona, needs just two points to join UF’s 1,000-point club. A week ago, Will Richard’s game-winning shot with 4.8 seconds left in regulation at South Carolina gave him his 1,000th point as a Gator.

Ahead of UF’s contest at Tennessee, third-year Florida head coach Todd Golden discussed the potency of the Gators’ backcourt, saying their success was aided by the play of Florida’s frontcourt.

“Our bigs, they probably don’t get enough credit for how good we are offensively, because obviously Walter is such an efficient scorer, Alijah’s been so good for us and Will has really taken it up a notch, right? Those three, and Denzel (Aberdeen) obviously. I mean, he’s been great the majority of the year as well. And those guys have the ball in their hands a lot, they make a lot of plays and they deserve a lot of the credit. But I think we probably have the easiest frontcourt in America to play with, with the way we play, three out, two in, obviously having two big guys on the floor, it’s not easy to do and to be able to be smooth offensively the way we are, Condo (Alex Condon), Tommy (Haugh), Sam (Alexis), even Rueben (Chinyelu), they deserve a lot of credit for the way we move the ball, and kind of get to the second and third side offensively and what you obviously do a great job of recognizing and realizing is how effective our bigs are carving out space for our guards in the paint, in and around the rim and a lot of those two-point field goals,” Golden said. “Our guards shoot an incredible number from two, their two-point field goal percentage is just elite, I mean it’s just absurd and a big part of it is when they get in there and they’re finishing around the rim, our bigs are taking the rim pressure away, with their bodies and their physicality.”

In a thrilling game against Tennessee, Florida guard Walter Clayton Jr. suffered an apparent ankle injury in the first half. However, to the relief of Gators fans, Clayton Jr. made a triumphant return in the second half to help lead his team to victory.

Despite the injury scare, Clayton Jr. showed incredible resilience and determination as he fought through the pain to rejoin his teammates on the court. His presence was immediately felt as he made crucial plays and helped to solidify the Gators’ defense.

This display of toughness and leadership from Clayton Jr. not only inspired his teammates but also served as a reminder of his importance to the team. His return in the second half was a turning point in the game, and his performance was instrumental in securing the win for Florida.

As the Gators continue their season, Walter Clayton Jr.’s return from injury will undoubtedly be remembered as a defining moment of strength and perseverance. Gators fans can rest assured knowing that they have a player like Clayton Jr. who is willing to give his all for the team, no matter the circumstances.

  • Pistons guard has proven to be the unquestioned steal of the offseason

The Detroit Pistons were getting throttled early against the Indiana Pacers last night and it looked as if the game might be over before the first quarter.

Then Malik Beasley entered the game and started to hit shots and before long Detroit had cut into Indiana’s lead and made a game of it.

Beasley finished with 20 points on 6-of-10 shooting from long range that kept the Pistons at least within shouting distance early in the game.

It has been a common theme this season, as Beasley has been one of the best shooters in the NBA, hitting over 40 percent of his 3-point shots and making more of them in total than all but one player in the league.

When the Pistons signed Beasley to a one-year deal late last offseason I didn’t think much of it other than, “ah, another expiring contract to trade at the deadline,” but that sentiment has changed to “how can we keep this guy?” after Beasley has been the best value in the NBA.

Malik Beasley: The NBA’s best value

When you look at players in Beasley’s salary range, they are mostly guys on rookie deals or back of the bench veterans who don’t see much action.

They aren’t guys averaging 16 points per game and 2nd in the NBA in 3-pointers made. Beasley isn’t a great defender, but you still won’t find a better value in the NBA than his $6 million deal.

But he’s not just a shooter, Beasley has been a huge part of the culture the Pistons are trying to build. He’s a leader on and off the floor and also a guy who does it by example, as he’s the first one to practice every day, showing the young players the type of dedication and work ethic required to have a long career in the NBA.

He’s been the perfect player in multiple ways, which begs the question of what is going to happen to him at the end of the season.

Will the Detroit Pistons re-sign Malik Beasley?

Beasley had some thoughts on the topic here that you can read for yourself, but regardless of his desires, it is going to be difficult for the Pistons to bring him back.

As a guy on a one-year deal, the Pistons can’t extend Beasley’s contract and will only own his non-Bird rights at the end of the season, which limits what they can offer him to 120% of his current salary.

That’s not going to be enough to keep him, as some team is almost certainly going to offer more than $7.2 million after the way he’s played this season.

That doesn’t mean the Pistons can’t bring him back and it will all depend on their salary cap situation, but if they want to make a big move elsewhere, it’s not going to be easy.

Enjoy Beasley while you can, as he may not even make it in Detroit through the trade deadline and it’s going to be challenging for him to return next season, though I hope they find a way to do it, as he’s been fun to watch and a big part of this team’s improvement.

The Detroit Pistons guard has proven to be the unquestioned steal of the offseason and here’s why:

    1. Stellar performance on the court: The guard has been lighting up the scoreboard and making big plays for the Pistons. They have been a key contributor to the team’s success and have shown that they are a force to be reckoned with in the league.

    2. Value for money: Despite being signed for a relatively low salary, the guard has outperformed expectations and provided excellent value for the Pistons. They have shown that they are worth much more than what they are being paid.

    3. Impact on the team: The guard’s presence on the court has had a significant impact on the Pistons’ overall performance. They have provided leadership, scoring, and defensive prowess, helping the team win games and climb up the standings.

Overall, the Pistons guard has proven to be a steal of the offseason and a valuable asset to the team. Fans and analysts alike are excited to see what they will accomplish in the rest of the season.

  • Five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas commits to USC

Eric Musselman knew well before he took the reins at USC that recruiting the Southland and its wellspring of hoops talent would be essential to his success with the Trojans.

“We have to recruit L.A.,” Musselman said after a game in December. “And not just recruit them a little bit. We have to recruit them relentlessly.”

That unrelenting approach on the recruiting trail had yet to fully resonate until Thursday, when five-star Chatsworth guard Alijah Arenas, one of the top uncommitted prospects in this year’s class, committed to the Trojans.

Arenas’ commitment marks the biggest recruiting victory of the Musselman era, the first five-star prospect to endorse the coach’s vision in L.A.

Arenas, the son of former NBA player Gilbert Arenas, is the No. 10 recruit in this year’s class and the second-ranked prospect in the state, according to 247 Sports. He picked USC over Arizona, among other schools.

“It felt like the best fit,” Arenas said while announcing his commitment on his father’s podcast, “Gil’s Arena.” “Seeing what USC was like, it made me feel special.”

Arenas, a 6-foot-6 guard, was named to the McDonald’s All-American game this week after reclassifying to become a senior. He’s averaging 31.8 points for Chatsworth in his third season for the Chancellors. The family decided to enroll him in a City Section public school rather than a private school in the hope it would help him improve as a leader and player facing double and triple teams.

Gilbert Arenas attended Grant High and Arizona, so USC’s success in recruiting Alijah might come as a surprise considering his father’s Arizona ties.

Arenas gives USC a trio of prospects in this year’s class, alongside top-50 guard Jerry Easter of Missouri and four-star St. John Bosco guard Elzie Harrington. They’ll join a roster next season that will look decidedly different. More than half the team will have exhausted its eligibility, making it even more critical that Musselman establish a foothold in Southern California.

With Arenas’ commitment, he’s on the right track.

Chatsworth High School standout Alijah Arenas has officially committed to play basketball for the USC Trojans, bringing his five-star talent to the Pac-12 powerhouse.

Arenas, a 6’4″ guard known for his scoring ability and defensive prowess, chose USC over several other top programs who were vying for his commitment. With his exceptional skill set and basketball IQ, he is expected to make an immediate impact for the Trojans.

USC head coach Andy Enfield expressed his excitement about adding Arenas to the roster, stating, “Alijah is a dynamic player who can score from anywhere on the court. His skill set and work ethic make him a perfect fit for our program, and we can’t wait to see what he accomplishes at USC.”

Arenas’ commitment is a major win for the Trojans and further solidifies their status as a contender in the Pac-12. USC fans can look forward to seeing Alijah Arenas light up the scoreboard and make a name for himself in the collegiate basketball world.
