Post:
At the recent BAFTA Awards ceremony, Hollywood legend Mark Hamill left guests ‘horrified’ when his pants fell down while presenting an award on stage. The incident, which happened in front of a live audience and millions of viewers watching at home, caused quite a stir on social media.

Musical performances have been part of Saturday Night Live since its very first episode in October 1975, and it’s time to dive deep into the SNL archives in a new documentary, Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music.
How to Watch
Watch Ladies & Gentlemen … 50 Years of SNL Music on Monday, January 27 at 8/7c on NBC and next day on Peacock.
Co-directed by Questlove and Oz Rodriguez, 50 Years of SNL Music features interviews with Musical Guests including Miley Cyrus, Bad Bunny, Paul Simon, Mick Jagger, Tom Morello, Kacey Musgraves, Jack White, Elvis Costello, Billie Eilish & Finneas, Dave Grohl, Debbie Harry & Chris Stein, Dua Lipa, Darryl DMC McDaniels, just to name a few.
It also features members of SNL‘s creative team from over the years, including Lorne Michaels, Eddie Murphy, Kenan Thompson, Maya Rudolph, and many more.
Questlove told Jimmy Fallon that he watched every single episode of SNL, in order to include all of the show’s greatest — and occasionally controversial — musical moments into the special.
“In the beginning, I think I was just going to compile like maybe the 50 best performances on the show, but around ’87, I realized there was way more iconic comedic moments musically on the show, like surpassing just the legendary performances. Music plays a major part on that show,” the Tonight Show bandleader and Academy Award-winning filmmaker told Fallon.
“And most of the iconic sketches that people remember, be it King Tut or anything Eddie Murphy’s done… The Lonely Island stuff, like it’s all music related,” Questlove added.
The three-hour special broadcast event includes a look back at the show’s 900-plus Musical Guests, and promises “untold stories behind the culture-defining, groundbreaking and news-making musical performances, sketches and cameos of the past 50 years.”
Leading up to the documentary’s premiere, Questlove posted the opening minutes of Ladies & Gentlemen… 50 Years of SNL Music to his Instagram on January 26, writing in the caption about his lifelong love for SNL.
“Doing this project was a NO BRAINER because I know this show like the back of my hand,” he wrote. “So every second of this doc is a love letter of sorts.”

Fans wait for riders to drop in during the women’s snowboard superpipe final of X Games Aspen on Jan. 26, 2024, at Buttermilk Ski Area. Austin Colbert/The Aspen Times
With X Games coming to Aspen this weekend, police, businesses, and hotels have their work cut out for them.
The events, running Thursday through Saturday, will bring an influx of sponsors, spectators, and athletes, requiring city and county police to show out in numbers. The Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office, in particular, will see its biggest night of the year as the events are under their jurisdiction, according to Pitkin County Chief Deputy of Operations Parker Lathrop.
But Lathrop expects they will manage the challenge.
“We have those moments of excitement. But overall, when it comes to the event itself, we’ve been very fortunate. I think most people come to enjoy (it),” he said. “Obviously, there’re always the outliers, but overall, it’s been a very positive experience for us. For the public, as well.”
The venue recorded nearly 16,000 attendants who scanned into the event last year on Saturday and Sunday, according Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office data.
During the three-day event last year, they recorded over 22,000 vehicles traveling upvalley on Colorado Highway 82. The county made 185 traffic stops outside of the event and on Highway 82 in either direction of Buttermilk, issuing 11 tickets, and arresting seven people.
Lathrop said they generally see an increase in minors illegally consuming alcohol on X Games weekend.
Local bars and restaurants will also see an uptick in business.
Zane’s Tavern Server and Bartender Libby Smith said she’s getting out of town before the people begin pouring in.
“I’m leaving the valley. I’m going to see Billy Strings in Denver,” she said, adding, “People don’t know how to act; they come here, and they treat it like a playground. It’s a bunch of kids, and they don’t tip, and they aren’t polite.”
She said, however, the influx of people is good for the local economy.
“But for the restaurant industry, our sanity, it’s not good,” she said.
Hotels will fill with sponsors, attendees, and leisure travelers, attracting a solid customer base when domestic skiers aren’t normally traveling, said Eliza Voss, Aspen Chamber Vice President of Destination Marketing.
As of Dec. 31, 80-85% of hotel space in Aspen was already booked for the X Games dates.
With the influx of people to the events, traffic is directed to park at the Brush Creek Park and Ride lot because there is no event parking on-site, according to Lathrop. But the 400 paved parking spaces of the lot filled by noon on Saturday of last year’s X Games, according to Sheriff’s Office records. Once full, drivers may park in Aspen or Snowmass and bus to the event.
This is the second year X Games has started to charge general admission tickets, a policy spearheaded by X Games, not Aspen Skiing Company, according to SkiCo.Spectators could attend the competitions for free in the past.
But SkiCo will offer 500 free tickets to local highschoolers at the venue each day of the event on a first come, first served basis.
Friday and Saturday general admissions tickets are sold out. Thursday general admission tickets can be purchased for $58 on the X Games website.
Though he doesn’t know how attendance will change with the recent change in ticket policy, Lathrop said charging admission for the events could improve attendees’ behavior.
“Usually, when someone’s paying to attend something, they want to remember it,” he said. “They want to enjoy (it).”

STORY: A fire at a ski resort hotel in Turkey’s Bolu mountains killed dozens of people on Tuesday with some guests escaping by leaping from windows in the middle of the night.
Authorities said the blaze, which also injured at least 50, started at 3:30am on the Grand Kartal Hotel’s restaurant floor.
Broadcasters showed footage of white bed sheets dangling from the charred 11-story building.
A guest told a local broadcaster he saw people panicking and jumping out.
Authorities said they were investigating what caused the fire.
It coincided with school holidays when many families from nearby Istanbul and Ankara head to the Bolu mountains to ski.
A tragic incident occurred at a ski resort in Turkey as a deadly fire broke out, forcing guests to make a desperate decision to jump from windows in order to escape the flames. The terrifying scene unfolded at the Dora Hotel in the popular ski town of Uludag, where flames quickly engulfed the building, trapping guests inside.
Reports indicate that at least three people lost their lives in the blaze, with several others suffering injuries as a result of jumping from the upper floors of the hotel. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but early reports suggest that it may have been sparked by an electrical fault.
The harrowing images of guests leaping from windows to safety serve as a stark reminder of the dangers that can arise in emergency situations. Our thoughts are with the victims and their loved ones during this tragic time.
India’s double-Olympic medallist Neeraj Chopra tied the knot with Himani in a private ceremony. Neeraj and his family managed to keep it a private affair as there was no buzz in the media before the star athlete himself made the surprising announcement. Neeraj scripted history for India during the Tokyo Olympics 2020 by clinching a gold medal in javelin throw. He became the first-ever track and field athlete from the nation to win the top honour in an individual event. Neeraj then went on to claim a silver medal in the following edition of the quadrennial event that was held in Paris last year.
Here are some exclusive details from Neeraj’s private ceremony –
– It was a destination wedding for Neeraj and Himani that took place in Himachal
– The functions for the same were on 14, 15 and 16th January this year
– Around 40 to 50 people were the part of the private ceremony
– After the marriage, both Neeraj and Himani went to foreign
– When the couple returns to India, a reception will take place
It is worth noting that Himani is currently pursuing course related to India sports in the United States of America.
Earlier this month, Neeraj was named the best male javelin thrower in the world in 2024 by globally-renowned American magazine ‘Track and Field News’. The 27-year-old Chopra pipped two-time world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada for the top spot in the 2024 rankings published by the California-based magazine.
Chopra was also the top-ranker in the men’s javelin throw rankings of 2023.
He did not win any Diamond League event in 2024, finishing second in Doha, Lausanne and Brussels. His only major win last year was at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

Good morning! A high of 36 today with a chance of snow showers after 10 AM, and a low of 26 overnight. The Caps will try to make it three in a row in Ottawa at 7 PM, and the Wizards play Phoenix at home. Lucy Dacus‘s new single, “Ankles.” The line “Pull me by my ankles to the edge of the bed” is certainly memorable, but the references to crossword puzzles and tea land harder for me, as does the très chic video.

The couple next to me bailed at intermission, which gives you a good sense of the power of this squirm-in-your-seat work of thoughtful provocation from playwright Bruce Norris—and the toughest stuff doesn’t even arrive until the second act. The setting is a group home for sex offenders; obviously your reaction to the funny, sad, deeply unsettling events that unfold there will depend on your tolerance for discomfort. But as disturbing as it is, Downstate isn’t any kind of chore to sit through: I found it surprising and start-to-finish riveting.

Jason Aldean Is Among Inauguration Musical Guests, There’s House Intrigue Over Ukraine, and Lots of People Are Buying Mansions
The upcoming presidential inauguration is shaping up to be a star-studded affair, with country music superstar Jason Aldean among the musical guests set to perform. Aldean, known for hits like “Dirt Road Anthem” and “Burnin’ It Down,” will join a lineup that also includes Lady Gaga and Jennifer Lopez.
In other news, there is growing intrigue in the House of Representatives over the situation in Ukraine. Lawmakers are divided over how to respond to Russia’s recent military actions in the region, with some calling for a tough stance and others advocating for diplomacy. The issue is expected to dominate discussions on Capitol Hill in the coming weeks.
Meanwhile, it seems that the real estate market is booming, as more and more people are buying mansions. With interest rates at historic lows and a growing economy, many buyers are taking advantage of the opportunity to purchase luxury properties. From sprawling estates in the countryside to penthouse apartments in the city, it seems that everyone is looking to upgrade their living situation.
Overall, it’s shaping up to be an eventful and exciting time in politics, music, and real estate. Stay tuned for more updates on these and other stories as they develop.
Avalanche mitigation booms echoed across town Thursday, Jan. 2, as Park City Mountain entered the seventh day of the ski patrol union strike.
After 4 inches of new snowfall, negotiators for the Park City Professional Ski Patrol Association and Vail Resorts met with a federal mediator again Thursday afternoon. There’s still no sign of when the strike will end.
Resort officials say they’ve been able to open less terrain than planned in part because of the strike. Guests have reported long lines and safety concerns.
KPCW caught up with New Jersey skier Nathan Gillman while he was in line at Bonanza Express. He said people have been venturing into closed terrain.
“The mountain, in response, closed a run to the run, so you had to duck two ropes to get to this closed run that hundreds of people were ducking,” he said. “And it didn’t really stop anybody. They had lost control of the mountain earlier this week.”
Bill Rock, Vail’s mountain division president and Park City Mountain’s former COO, is back in Utah after patrollers walked about a week ago.
The union and the company have tentative agreement on education and training packages, but not wages or benefits. The patrollers want an extra $2 in base pay across all U.S. resorts.
Skiers wait in line at Park City Mountain Jan. 2, 2025.
KPCW asked Rock whether the strike has hurt Vail Resorts’ brand.
“Our focus right now is to operate as effectively as we can and deliver the guest experience for our guests who are in town,” Rock said. “After the strike is over, there’ll be a lot of assessment of what happened and how we got here. I’m incredibly proud of the team that’s showing up every day to deliver the experience that we can deliver safely with the team that we have.”
Park City Mountain has disabled comments on recent social media posts as users pile on complaints.
Vail Resorts’ stock dropped more than 6% Jan. 2, the same day MarketBeat reported that JPMorgan Chase & Co. dropped two thirds of its Vail shares this quarter. It now owns less than 2% of the company.
“If you want to be in a travel stock, if you want to run a travel and a leisure company, you darn well better give the experience that you’re advertising. Because if you don’t, you will get negative PR and you will get non-repeating customers,” Lebenthal said.
When it comes to ski patrol, Gillman, who has skied for more than 30 years, said his opinion has improved.
“On a normal day, I don’t like patrol. You know, they’re there to take your pass, or if you cut a line, or break a rule, or you seem too fast,” he said. “But this year … has really humanized patrol, made me realize just who they are and what they do and how important they are.”
Among other safety concerns, Gillman claims he waited for 20 minutes on Another World with a skier who tore their meniscus before safety personnel responded to verify the guest needed a toboggan.
Rock reiterated to KPCW that safety protocols haven’t changed as a result of the walkout, and union business manager Quinn Graves said response times vary depending on where guests are injured.
Gillman’s an Epic passholder who spent all of December skiing in Colorado and said his experience at Vail’s flagship resort was far better. He arrived in Utah on the first day of the strike and confessed a bit of “morbid curiosity.”
“I’m smart enough to know not to come here. But there’s part of me that is like, I would like to see what happens when ski patrol goes on strike,” Gillman said. He doesn’t plan to renew his Epic Pass.
As the strike continues, more snow is expected at Park City Mountain Saturday.
KPCW’s Parker Malatesta contributed reporting.
In a surprising turn of events, the ski patrol at Park City Mountain Resort has gone on strike, leaving both staff and guests scrambling to ensure safety on the slopes. The strike, which has been ongoing for a week now, has put a strain on the resort’s operations and has raised concerns about the safety of skiers and snowboarders.
The ski patrol, responsible for ensuring the safety of guests and responding to emergencies on the mountain, has been demanding better working conditions and higher pay. Despite negotiations between the patrol and resort management, a resolution has yet to be reached, leaving the ski patrol members on strike.
As a result, other staff members and volunteers have been stepping in to help fill the gaps left by the striking patrol members. This has put additional stress on an already busy ski season, with long lift lines and crowded slopes becoming more common.
Guests have also been feeling the effects of the strike, with longer response times to emergencies and less visible presence of ski patrol on the mountain. Many are expressing concerns about their safety and are calling for a resolution to be reached soon.
Park City Mountain Resort has issued a statement assuring guests that they are working to address the situation and ensure the safety of all visitors. In the meantime, they are asking for patience and understanding as they navigate through this challenging time.
As the strike continues, both staff and guests are hoping for a swift resolution that will allow the ski patrol to return to their duties and ensure a safe and enjoyable experience on the mountain.
