  • Once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm hits Gulf Coast, with record-breaking snowfall in Florida

For much of the Gulf Coast, the snowstorm that’s expected to end soon was a once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm.

Many areas saw more snow than they have in at least 130 years, making this truly a historic event.

Florida just saw the most snow on record, with a preliminary 8.8 inches observed in Milton, which is north of Pensacola. This is the highest snow total on record for the state, according to the National Weather Service.

An ABC News graphic shows the radar for the southeastern United States at 5 a.m. ET on Wednesday, Jan. 22, 2025.

    ABC News

Snow reports from the last 24 hours include about 1.2 inches in Houston, Texas. That’s the official number because it was taken at the city’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport, but the southeast part of the city saw over 4 inces. The NWS said it “is one of the top snowstorms to impact the Houston area.”

Elsewhere in the South, the snowfall was higher. In Louisiana, Baton Rouge saw 7.6 inches, New Orleans saw 8 inches and Lake Charles saw at least 4.8 inches, with up to 6 inches in some areas. Lafayette has seen 9 inches.

The snowfall the most recent highest total in New Orleans was from New Year’s Even in 1963 when 2.7 inches fell.

The 7.5 inches that fell in Mobile, Alabama, and the 7.6 inches in Pensacola, Florida, were all-time records.

Snow is still falling early Wednesday along the coastal Carolinas, in Georgia and in northern Florida.

About 5 inches have so far been reported in parts of coastal North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia. Even North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, said it’s seen 3.8 inches — and it’s still snowing there.

The snow is expected to end around 7 a.m. for the east coast, exiting Charleston, South Carolina, and Wilmington, North Carolina, last.

Rain will continue in the Florida peninsula into the afternoon, heading south and exciting Miami, with lingering spot showers expected through the evening and again on Thursday for the Florida peninsula.

The Gulf Coast is no stranger to severe weather, but the recent snowstorm that hit the region has left residents in awe. Record-breaking snowfall has blanketed Florida, a state known for its warm weather and sandy beaches.

The once-in-a-lifetime storm brought several inches of snow to cities like Tampa, Orlando, and even Miami, where snow is a rare occurrence. Schools and businesses have been forced to close as residents navigate the icy roads and frigid temperatures.

While the snow has brought excitement and wonder to many, it has also caused challenges for those unaccustomed to such weather. Power outages and road closures have made travel difficult, and emergency services have been working overtime to assist those in need.

Despite the difficulties, the snow has brought a sense of unity to the Gulf Coast, as neighbors come together to help one another shovel driveways, clear sidewalks, and check in on those who may need assistance.

As the snow begins to melt and temperatures rise, the Gulf Coast will return to its usual warm and sunny weather. But for now, residents are enjoying this once-in-a-lifetime snowstorm and the memories it has created.

GALVESTON, Texas – Photos and videos from beaches along the Gulf Coast showed a rare and stunning sight Tuesday: snow

In Galveston, video from Galveston.com showed snow blanketing the beach, concealing the sand underneath. Waves crashed in the distance, with dark, gloomy skies behind them.

States from Texas to the Carolinas are experiencing a once-in-a-generation snowstorm this week. It has already resulted in a Blizzard Warning being issued in Louisiana for the first time ever.

More visuals from Galveston showed the snow-covered beach, a sharp contrast to the usually green, sunny landscape. Reports from the National Weather Service indicate the area has received about 1-3 inches of snow.

During the snow, people took pictures of the snowy scene next to the statue memorializing the 1900 Galveston hurricane, known as the deadliest hurricane in U.S. history.

It was the snowiest day in decades at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston, where 3 inches of snow fell, according to NWS data. The last time that much snow fell in the area was in 1949.

Wet and cold conditions linger for the Gulf Coast

Scattered rain will impact the Gulf Coast overnight and throughout Wednesday.

THAT’S THE VERY LATEST IN TALLAHASSEE, FLORIDA. AIR FOR US. BACK TO YOU. IT’S PUT HAVE. YEAH, A LOT OF PEOPLE DON’T KNOW HOW TO DRIVE IN AND THEN THOSE OF US THAT ARE ORIGINALLY FROM AREAS THAT IT SNOWS. YOU THINK, AL, I’M HEADED OUT TO BUT IT’S NOT THE SAME ROAD CONDITIONS BECAUSE WE DON’T SALT THE ROADS. WE DON’T TREAT THE ROADS. SO IT SAYS IT’S SO MUCH MORE DANGEROUS AND YOU GO OUT THERE THINKING, OH, YOU JUST GOTTA. >> GO SLOW. KNOW YOU’RE GOING TO SLIDE LEAST I’M GLAD WE’RE NOT DEALING WITH IT, BUT IT IS KIND OF NICE. IT’S THOSE KIDS UP IN THE PANHANDLE. I MEAN, HAVING SO MUCH TO MUCH. I’VE SUCH A CORE MEMORY OF THE BLIZZARD OF 92 IS KIND OF WHAT GOT ME INTERESTED IN WHETHER TO BEGIN SO I’M SURE THEY’RE JUST KIND OF HAVING THE TIME OF THEIR LIFE UP. THERE’S HOPEFULLY IT WON’T SAVE THE ONE THING THAT’S INTERESTING AND COULD BE PRETTY DANGEROUS GOING FORWARD AS THE TEMPERATURES ARE GOING TO BE SLOW TO RISE. THEY DON’T GET INTO THE 40’S UNTIL THURSDAY. NOW THEY WILL SEE A LOT OF SUNSHINE TOMORROW, BUT THAT SNOW MIGHT BE SLOW TO MELT AT LEASE, ESPECIALLY IN SOME GRASSY AREA. SO HOPEFULLY THOSE ROAD CONDITIONS CAN START TO GET BETTER AND IMPROVE. SO PEOPLE GET BACK ON THE ROAD SAFELY AND GET TO WHERE THEY NEED TO BE GIVEN ANY EMERGENCIES OR JUST MAYBE FOR SOME GROCERIES. ALL RIGHT. HERE’S THE LATEST ON RADAR. SO THE SNOW WILL START TO TAPER OFF IN FLORIDA BY TOMORROW MORNING. IT’S THAT PINK STUFF THAT THAT FREEZING RAIN WHEN FREEZES ON CONTACT ON THE GROUND. THAT’S THE MESSY STUFF. BUT THEN ONCE YOU HEAD SOUTH OF GAME, GAINESVILLE. IT’S ALL RAIN. WE ARE GOING TO HAVE SOME PRETTY CHILLY WEATHER TOMORROW MORNING. TOMORROW WILL BE BLUSTERY IN THE MORNING. COLD WEATHER MOVING ON IN TEMPERATURES START TO MODERATE. BUT THEN WE GET ANOTHER COLD BLAST OF AIR BY SATURDAY MORNING. THAT WILL BE OUR COLDEST MORNING OF THIS SEASON SO FAR. WE’LL TAKE A LOOK AT THOSE NUMBERS COMING UP IN JUST A MOMENT. SO FOR TONIGHT WILL DROP DOWN INTO THE UPPER 40’S ALREADY SEEING THE 40’S IN SOME AREAS. AND THEN BY THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW WILL INCREASE BUT NOT MUCH WERE HEADED TO JUST SHY OF 60 DEGREES FOR THE AFTERNOON TOMORROW MORNING. WE ARE GONNA HAVE TEMPERATURES FEELING INTO THE 30’S FOR DESOTO COUNTY. THAT’S WHY THAT COLD WEATHER ADVISORY IS IN PLACE FOR DESOTO COUNTY AND DESOTO COUNTY. ONLY WITH THAT WIND FACTORED IN. IT’S GOING TO FEEL IT ABOUT 36 DEGREES WITH WINDS GUSTING UP TO SAY 20 MILES PER HOUR THROUGH THE MORNING HOURS. AS FAR AS RAIN IS CONCERNED, LIGHT RAIN THROUGH 3, 5 O’CLOCK IN THE MORNING OR THAT KIND OF SCATTERED SHOWERS FOR THE MORNING. I WAS EVEN UP THROUGH ABOUT 8.30. IF YOU’RE ON THE ROADS TOMORROW MORNING. EXPECT THINGS TO BE ON THE SLIPPERY SIDE AND CHILLY AND BREEZY. IT’S NOT VERY COMFORTABLE. THAT’S FOR SURE. BY 11 O’CLOCK. A LOT OF THOSE SHOWERS START TO MOVE FARTHER TO THE SOUTH. SO LITTLE OPPOSITE OF WHAT HAPPENED TODAY TODAY, THE SHOWERS MOVED OFF TO THE NORTH TOMORROW. THEY’RE GOING TO MOVE OFF TO THE SOUTH, DRIER BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT, STILL CLOUDY AND CHILLY. WE GET A FEW MORE OPPORTUNITIES FOR RAIN ON THURSDAY, BUT JUST NOT AS MANY AS WHAT WE’LL HAVE FOR TOMORROW. SO SOME NEEDED RAIN FOR TOMORROW. IT’S JUST UNCOMFORTABLE. RAIN FOR SURE. HERE’S A LOOK AT THE CURRENT TEMPERATURES ARE MOVING ON IN WITH THAT COLD AIR. IT’S ONLY 47 DEGREES IN ARCADIA SAYS THAT FRONT EDGE OF THAT COLD AIR PUSHING ON IN. IT’S STILL INTO THE 60’S. NOT TOO BAD FOR MARCO ISLAND ARE GOLDEN GATE. BUT TOMORROW AGAIN, NOTICE SOME CHANGES. HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT TOMORROW MORNING 46. WE START TO INCREASE THE OVERNIGHT LOWS FOR THURSDAY. THEN COLD AIR IS REINFORCED BY ANOTHER COLD FRONT. WE ARE DRIER ON FRIDAY, BUT IT’S SATURDAY MORNING. I WANT TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO. WE COULD HAVE SOME FROST AROUND THE REGION, WIDESPREAD FROST. SO JUST KEEP THAT IN MIND. THEN THE WARM-UP BEGINS. ONCE WE GET PAST SATURDAY MORNING, TEMPERATURES WILL START TO INCREASE DURING THE AFTERNOON AND AT NIGHT AS WELL BY MONDAY AND TUESDAY MORNING, WE’RE ALREADY APPROACHING YOUR 80 DEGREES BY THE AFTERNOON WITH ABOVE AVERAGE OVERNIGHT LOWS TOMORROW MORNING. 43 IN ARCADIA FEELING INTO THE MID 30’S MID TO UPPER 40’S FOR AREAS ELSEWHERE. BUT THEY HAVE TO NOON TOMORROW. 58 AGAIN IS PRETTY GUSTY IN THE MORNING. A LITTLE BIT QUIETER FOR THE AFTERNOON, BUT CLOUDY, BREEZY HIGH TEMPERATURES AT 58. THESE ARE NOT NORMAL NUMBERS, NOT NORMAL CONDITIONS FOR FLORIDA’S SOUTHWEST FLORIDA, THE GULF COAST AND SPECIFICALLY THE PANHANDLE TO WHEN DOES THE SUMMER TERM FRIDAY. WE’LL SEE A LOT MORE SUNSHINE ON FRIDAY. SURPRISED WE SEE A LITTLE BIT OF SUNSHINE HERE THERE ON THURSDAY, BUT MORE SO FOR FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND. BUT WHAT A TURNAROUND SUNDAY WITH 75 DEGREES BY THE AFTERNOON.

Trump reiterated his commitment to securing the nation’s borders and cracking down on illegal immigration. He vowed to build a wall along the southern border with Mexico and implement stricter vetting procedures for immigrants and refugees entering the country.

In his speech, Trump also touched on the idea of creating a “Gulf of America,” a concept he described as a united front of North and South American countries working together to promote economic growth and security in the region. He emphasized the importance of strengthening relationships with countries in the Western Hemisphere and working towards common goals for the betterment of all nations involved.

As President Trump begins his term in office, it is clear that immigration and foreign policy will be top priorities for his administration. Only time will tell how his plans for the “Gulf of America” will unfold and what impact they will have on the United States and its neighbors.

  • Trump announces he’ll rename Gulf of Mexico, Mount Denali. new names will be…

In his first hours as the 47th president, Donald Trump is set to make a bold move, ordering the renaming of two prominent landmarks. The Gulf of Mexico will be rebranded as the Gulf of America, while Alaska’s Mount Denali, the highest peak in North America, will revert to its previous name, Mount McKinley, as reported by The Post.

    Mount McKainley’s significance for Trump

A preview of the orders suggested that the renaming of the two natural landmarks is part of Trump’s effort to honour “American greatness.” The document further stated, “President Trump is bringing common sense to government and renewing the pillars of American Civilization,” as reported by The Post. The executive orders will instruct the Secretary of the Interior to officially update federal communications and maps to reflect the new names, “Gulf of America” and “Mount McKinley.” However, it remains unclear whether the directive will extend to schools or non-federal settings.

The preview document suggested that restoring the name Mount McKinley holds great significance to Trump. The peak was named after William McKinley who died 16 years before. With his strong tariff policies and his leadership in expanding U.S. territory following the Spanish-American War, he was an inspiration to Trump.

During a Turning Point USA rally in Arizona in December, Trump shared, “McKinley was a very good, maybe a great president. They took his name off Mount McKinley, right? That’s what they do to people. Now, he was a great president, very good president. At a minimum, he was a very good businessman. He was a businessman, then a governor, very successful businessman.”

The documents read, “President McKinley is honoured for giving his life for our great Nation and dutifully recognized for his historic legacy of protecting America’s interests and generating enormous wealth for our Nation.” Barack Obama’s decision to rename Mount McKinley to Denali in 2015 honoured the indigenous Koyukon Athabaskan name for the mountain. However, Trump’s executive orders will reverse that change, restoring the peak’s original name, Mount McKinley.

    Trump to rename Gulf

Trump also discussed renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America in a press conference at Mar-a-Lago, calling it “a beautiful name” and adding, “What a beautiful name and it’s appropriate.” This change aligns with Trump’s energy policies, as the Gulf plays a key role in offshore oil production, an area Trump aims to expand in his second term.

The draft document appreciated the Gulf for being “pivotal” to the nation’s maritime industry and its “energy production, international commerce, tourism, fishing, and recreation.” is expected to sign the orders either in the President’s Room at the Capitol after his swearing-in or at the White House following the inaugural parade, marking the start of his second term with key executive actions.

In a surprising move, President Trump has announced his plans to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of Freedom” and Mount Denali to “Mount Trump.”

The decision to rename these iconic landmarks has sparked controversy and debate among both supporters and critics of the President. Some argue that these new names better reflect American values and ideals, while others believe it is a blatant attempt to assert power and ego.

Regardless of where you stand on the issue, one thing is for certain – these new names are sure to make waves in the world of geography and politics. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story. #GulfOfFreedom #MountTrump #RenamingControversy

  • Trump will rename Gulf of Mexico the ‘Gulf of America’ among 1st executive order actions

WASHINGTON — Among the first executive orders set to be signed by President-elect Donald Trump will be an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico as the “Gulf of America.”

During his January press conference at Mar-A-Lago, Trump declared he would change the name, saying it’s currently run by cartels and that “it’s ours.”

President-elect Trump is outlining his goals for acquiring new territory for the U.S. He also says he wants to re-name the Gulf of Mexico.

“We’re going to be changing the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a beautiful ring that covers a lot of territory, the Gulf of America,” Trump said. “What a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate. It’s appropriate. And Mexico has to stop allowing millions of people to pour into our country.”

  • Trump to rename Gulf of Mexico, Mount Denali on first day in office

President-elect Trump will sign executive orders renaming the Gulf of Mexico and Mount Denali on his first day in office, incoming White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt confirmed Monday.

The orders, first reported by the New York Post, are among a slew of executive actions Trump plans to take after taking the oath of office on Monday. The actions would rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and Mount Denali, the tallest mountain in North America, to Mount McKinley.

“President Trump is bringing common sense to government and renewing the pillars of American Civilization,” reads a preview of the order obtained by the Post.

The orders direct the Secretary of the Interior to make the name changes. The changes will apply to official federal documents and maps, though it is unclear whether the order also requires schools to use the new terminology.

“McKinley was a very good, maybe a great president,” Trump said at a December rally. “They took his name off Mount McKinley, right? That’s what they do to people. Now, he was a great president, very good president. At a minimum, he was a very good businessman. He was a businessman, then a governor, very successful businessman.”

President Obama renamed the mountain to Denali in 2015, in keeping with a request from the Alaska legislature.

Trump plans to sign roughly 200 orders on his first day in office, targeting immigration and cutting back on DEI initiatives.

Incoming Trump administration officials told Fox News Digital that the overarching theme of his Day One actions is “promises made, promises kept.”

  • Trump will rename Gulf of Mexico to ‘Gulf of America’ among 1st executive orders

Among the first executive orders set to be signed by President-elect Donald Trump will be an order to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the newly named “Gulf of America.”

During his January press conference at Mar-a-Lago, Trump declared he would change the name, saying the gulf is currently run by cartels and that “it’s ours.”

Presidents do have the authority to rename geographic regions and features, but it needs to be done via executive order.

Half of the U.S. petroleum refining and natural gas processing capacity is located along the Gulf of Mexico, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and it supplies about 40% of the nation’s seafood, according to the Environmental Defense Fund.

  • Snow now more likely in Gulf Coast next week as forecast shows rare cold front

It’s rare for the Gulf Coast, but snow is officially in the forecast. There is now a 50%-70% chance for frozen precipitation. It might be mixed with rain, sleet and freezing rain but it will be cold enough for just plain snow.

Prior to this cold weather event, warm air and rain is forecast on Saturday. The rain Saturday will linger through the evening hours.

Cold air rushes in following the rain. Sunday highs will likely reach low 50s but it will never feel that warm with a wind gusting at 25 miles per hour (mph). The wind chill values will be even more brutal on Monday morning. With a north wind continuing, temps will be in the 20s Monday morning with wind chill values in the teens.

When it’s freezing cold on the Gulf Coast, usually the air is dry and skies are clear. In this rare circumstance, low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will send moisture into a cold pocket of air over the coast, likely resulting in snowfall.

Model data had been mixed on the possibility for snow but now models are in much better agreement, meaning snowfall is increasingly more likely for the northern Gulf Coast.

It is still dependent on the route the low takes. Whether is tracks more north or south. If the low moves farther north, the coastal zones will likely see more of a mixed frozen precipitation event rather than snow, with snow inland. If it moves south, this gives the better chance of snow across all areas. The variation in temperatures along the coast also will play a role in what kind of precipitation those areas will see.

Timing of this event looks to be as early as Tuesday morning, and end Tuesday night.

While it is difficult to forecast accumulation, and exact accumulation amounts are still being refined, probabilities of greater than 1″ of snow have increased across the entire area, increasing to as high as 60-70%. Odds of greater than 3″ have increased to 30-50% along, north, and west of the I-65 corridor with even 10-20% chances along the coast.

Regardless of what falls from the skies, temperatures will be dangerously cold for several days. An Extreme Cold Watch is in effect for the area Sunday Evening through Monday morning.

What this means is that temperatures will be well below freezing, and wind chills will likely be in the single digits through the night hours. .Frostbite and hypothermia are likely if exposed to these temperatures. An extended period of freezing temperatures could cause ruptured water pipes.

Minimum wind chill values will be in the single digits Monday. Tuesday, and Wednesday mornings. Some areas may not rise above freezing on Tuesday.

As the forecast develops. we will know more and let you know what to expect.

Get ready for a winter wonderland, Gulf Coast residents! Forecasters are predicting a rare cold front that could bring snow to the region next week. While snow is a rare occurrence in the Gulf Coast, this cold front is expected to bring temperatures low enough for snow to fall.

If you’re a snow enthusiast, this is definitely something to look forward to. Make sure to stock up on hot cocoa and cozy blankets, because it looks like we could be in for a winter treat next week.

Stay tuned for updates on this exciting weather development, and get ready to enjoy the beauty of a snowy Gulf Coast next week! #SnowInGulfCoast #WinterWonderland
