  • SUPERMAN Director James Gunn Shares New “Summer Of Superman” Artwork From Jorge Jiménez

As we build towards DC Studios’ highly-anticipated Superman reboot, DC Comics recently announced its new “Summer of Superman” initiative, which will “celebrate the Man of Steel’s enduring legacy as a pop culture icon, and a symbol of truth, justice, and hope, and his first comic book appearance in the historic Action Comics #1 in 1938.”

Following the somewhat surprising news that long-time Marvel Comics writer Dan Slott would be jumping ship to DC to pen a new Superman Unlimited series, director James Gunn has shared some stunning artwork from Jorge Jiménez for Summer of Superman Special #1.

You can check out the art along with a synopsis below (more here).

“Before making his big splash in the DC Universe with Superman Unlimited, acclaimed writer Dan Slott joins storytelling heavyweights Mark Waid (Justice League Unlimited, Batman/Superman: World’s Finest), Joshua Williamson (Superman, DC All In Special) and Jorge Jiménez (Batman, Super Sons) for the Summer of Superman Special, arriving at participating comic book shops and digital retailers Wednesday, April 16.

In this oversize issue, Slott, Waid and Williamson deliver a single story in three acts, highlighted by Jiménez’s dynamic art style that has made him a favorite of comic book fans worldwide. The wedding of Lana Lang and John Henry Irons (a.k.a. Steel) serves as the backdrop for an outpouring of love and support from family and friends. However, their big day will also be big trouble, as threats from the past, present and future will spawn major new conflicts for the Superman family.”

Superman stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Isabel Merced as Hawkgirl, Nathan Fillion as Green Lantern Guy Gardner, and Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho.

Sara Sampaio is on board as Lex’s assistant/lover Eve Teschmacher, Pruitt Taylor Vince and Neva Howell will play “Ma” and “Pa” Kent, and Milly Alcock’s Supergirl has been confirmed to make her debut ahead of her own Woman of Tomorrow movie.

“And that’s a wrap,” Gunn posted earlier this year when filming concluded. “God bless our cast and crew whose commitment, creativity, and hard work have brought this project to life. I set out to make a movie about a good man in a world that isn’t always so much. And the goodness and kindness and love I’ve encountered on a daily basis on the set has inspired me and thrust me forward when I felt too spent to move on my own.

Thank you all from the bottom of my heart. It has been an honor. The destination has been Superman, but the journey has been the toil and the laughter and the emotions and ideas and magic we’ve shared together on set – and for that I am forever grateful.”

You can check out an updated synopsis for the movie below.

“In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”

  • James Gunn Shares First Look Of Milly Alcock As ‘Supergirl’s Kara Zor-El As Filming Begins

DC Studios co-head James Gunn is celebrating the beginning of filming of Supergirl, which stars Milly Alcock in the titled role.

The filmmaker took to social media to share a teaser photo of Alcock as Kara Zor-El as filming starts on the superhero movie.

“Thrilled to see cameras roll at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden on Supergirl, with Craig Gillespie at the helm and the phenomenal Milly Alcock as our Kara Zor-El,” Gunn shared on X, the microblogging platform formerly known as Twitter. “Craig brings an incredible sensibility to this story, and Milly is every inch the unique #Supergirl envisioned by Tom King, Bilquis Evely & Ana Nogueira.”

The DC Studios movie is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which Bilquis Evely illustrated. Ana Nogueira adapted the comic book for the big screen. In that comic, the bad guy is Krem of the Yellow Hill, who kills a young alien girl’s father. She draws Supergirl into the conflict. Knolle is a noble and honorable warrior who travels across the galaxy with Supergirl to hunt Krem for killing her father in cold blood.

Three Body Problem star Eve Ridley will play Ruthye Mary Knolle in the film, while Rust and Bone actor Matthias Schoenaerts landed the role of Krem.

House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock is set to play the superhero, which Gunn says was his first pick.

“In case you missed this exciting news yesterday. Strangely, Milly was the FIRST person I brought up to Peter (Safran) for this role, well over a year ago, when I had only read the comics,” Gunn posted on Threads.

Exciting news for DC fans! James Gunn, director of the upcoming film ‘Supergirl,’ has shared the first look of Milly Alcock as Kara Zor-El as filming officially begins. The image, posted on Gunn’s social media channels, gives fans a glimpse of Alcock in full costume as the iconic superhero.

Alcock’s portrayal of Kara Zor-El, also known as Supergirl, is highly anticipated by fans who are eager to see how she brings the beloved character to life on the big screen. With Gunn at the helm, it’s sure to be an action-packed and visually stunning film that will do justice to the legendary character.

  • ‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Pushes Back Against Criticism For His Support Of James Gunn And ‘Superman’

‘Suicide Squad’ Director David Ayer Pushes Back Against Criticism For His Support Of James Gunn And ‘Superman’

Harley (Margot Robbie) is locked away like the Ayer Cut in Suicide Squad (2016), Warner Bros. Pictures

For the ordeal he went through at the hands of Warner Bros., Suicide Squad director David Ayer can (rather hyperbolically) be called an ‘innocent victim’ of the chaos that sustained the DCEU up until 2023. He’s been vocal about his experience making the 2016 film, which was taken from him and recut drastically.

His vision ruined and most none the wiser about that for years, Ayer garnered a lot of sympathy for his plight resulting from being denied by a corporate bureaucracy and misrepresented in the media. Like Zack Snyder, there were calls for his version of the Squad to be released, which might have righted a few wrongs.

The campaign for the release of the Ayer Cut quieted down but never actually went away. A renewed push was ready to roll out simultaneously with the Superman teaser trailer, which Ayer did not want to interfere with. He made this wish known on X, urging his supporters to hold off and let James Gunn’s film soak up the attention.

“I didn’t realize James was dropping Creature Commandos when the last Ayer cut campaign hit,” Ayer wrote. “The new Superman trailer is dropping soon and I know there’s intentions of another campaign for my version of Skwad.”

“As a film makers I want to support other film makers. I’m excited to see the trailer and have heard through the rumor mill it’s pretty incredible,” he added, “I just want to publicly say it would be nice to stay far clear of Thursday for any campaigning.”

His post concluded, “I appreciate everyone hearing me out. At the end of the day I’m riding a tiger here. Just going in heard on this,” punctuated by a praying-hands emoji.

    Bad guy over th-Ayer
David Ayer (@DavidAyerMovies) doesn’t want to be the bad guy on X

Unfortunately, Ayer’s attempt to be diplomatic and positive backfired with a section of DC fandom, and he went back on X to address it.

“My Lord. If supporting another film maker is so contentious, I’m just lost at this point,” he began in a second post. “When I was a kid I had a nightmare childhood. My best friends were comic books. They held me and gave me company when no one else did.”

“Batman spoke to my injured soul. Superman’s optimism was an example how to see the world without darkness,” he said.

    Joker and Harley-alex ross rendition

“I cannot f-king wait to see Jame’s trailer. Real talk. And I cannot wait to see his film. And absolutely am sure he crushed it. Because that simple optimism of Superman is all over it. And the little kid in me needs that right now,” Ayer continued.

“I’m a bad guy for that? So be it,” he added. “I do troll what I can control. And can’t what I can’t. Gonna step back from all this for a moment.” Most think Ayer meant social media when he said “step back,” but he is still updating his account.

Others in his field have abandoned X (or feigned doing so) in favor of alternatives such as Bluesky because of similar opinionated opposition. In the case of director Rob Reiner, the grass wasn’t so greener elsewhere and he quit social media altogether.

Back on Ayer’s X page, there are nasty comments with expletives in both of his threads, but for the most part, people who feel let down by his initial remarks respond with more self-control. Moreover, a considerable number of replies agree with and support him.

The Beekeeper director still hopes their support will bring the release of his vision to fruition, though he acknowledges he’s not in control of that. “I hope my real film can be shared one day. I appreciate the continued support and interest,” he posted earlier in December.

When questioned about its quality, Ayer responded, “The best version simply has not been seen. I know how difficult it is for someone outside the industry to comprehend how insanely different [two] cuts [of] a film can be. If you dislike what you’ve seen, here’s an opportunity to see what I actually intended and then judge once you have all the information.”

    More About:

Recently, ‘Suicide Squad’ director David Ayer found himself in the crosshairs of criticism for his vocal support of fellow filmmaker James Gunn and the upcoming ‘Superman’ reboot. Gunn, who is set to helm the highly anticipated ‘The Suicide Squad’ sequel, has faced backlash in the past for controversial tweets. However, Ayer has stood by Gunn, praising his talent and defending his right to redemption.

In a series of tweets, Ayer pushed back against critics who questioned his loyalty to Gunn and criticized his decision to support the filmmaker. Ayer emphasized the importance of forgiveness and second chances, pointing out that everyone makes mistakes and deserves the opportunity to grow and learn from them.

Additionally, Ayer addressed the backlash surrounding the announcement of a new ‘Superman’ movie, which is rumored to be a reboot rather than a continuation of Henry Cavill’s portrayal of the iconic superhero. Ayer expressed his excitement for the project and defended the creative team behind it, emphasizing the need for fresh perspectives and new interpretations of beloved characters.

In the face of criticism, David Ayer has remained steadfast in his support of James Gunn and his enthusiasm for the upcoming ‘Superman’ movie. • Sean Gunn Reveals How His Take On Maxwell Lord Will Differ From WONDER WOMAN 1984 Star Pedro Pascal

Sean Gunn Reveals How His Take On Maxwell Lord Will Differ From WONDER WOMAN 1984 Star Pedro Pascal

While most DCEU actors aren’t part of DC Studios’ DCU plans, The Suicide Squad star Sean Gunn has already landed multiple roles in the reboot being mapped out by his brother, James Gunn.

The Guardians of the Galaxy standout has stolen the show in Creature Commandos as G.I. Robot and reprised his previous role, Weasel, as well. While he’ll likely lend his voice to both characters in live-action somewhere down the line, Gunn’s main on-camera role will be as the villainous Maxwell Lord.

The character is expected to be less of a full-blown baddie and more of an antagonist in the DCU, bringing the Wonder Woman 1984 character (where he was played by Pedro Pascal) more in line with his comic book counterpart.

Superman set photos showcased the “LordTech” logo and it appears Green Lantern Guy Gardner, Hawkgirl, and Mr. Terrific all work for the businessman who, in the comics, ultimately breaks bad before getting his neck broken by Diana Prince.

In a new interview with The Kristian Harloff Show, Gunn was asked how his DCU version of Maxwell Lord will differ from what Pascal did in 2020.

“I can tell you that the one obvious thing is it’s me playing the role. It doesn’t just mean I’m going to give a different interpretation,” the actor started. “Your own body is the vessel for what you’re doing, so obviously…no one is gonna confuse me and Pedro Pascal’s performance. So we’re obviously going to do something different.”

“I think that James is good about directing me towards the relevant source material,” Gunn continued. “So, I think, the whole concept of the character takes a different type of tack. I saw the movie and Pedro is obviously a great actor, but what he does in that movie is not really relevant to anything that I’m doing.”

On the page, Maxwell Lord was initially depicted as a shrewd entrepreneur and an ally to superheroes before later becoming a major antagonist, using mind control and manipulation to further his goals. He has clashed with various heroes, including the Justice League and in some storylines, his actions have had significant repercussions on the wider DC Universe.

It’s unclear what the plan is for Lord or where we’ll first see him, but Superman seems likely given that we’ll see a group of superheroes there who may or may not be an early iteration of the Justice League of America (the “Justice League International,” perhaps).

Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

Superman arrives in theaters on July 11, 2025.

In an exclusive interview with Entertainment Weekly, Sean Gunn opened up about his upcoming role as Maxwell Lord in the highly anticipated film “Justice League: Rebirth.” The actor revealed how his take on the character will differ from Pedro Pascal’s portrayal in “Wonder Woman 1984.”

Gunn shared that while Pascal’s performance as Maxwell Lord was charismatic and manipulative, he wanted to bring a darker and more sinister edge to the character. He explained that he drew inspiration from the comic book version of Maxwell Lord, who is known for his ruthless and power-hungry nature.

“I wanted to explore the darker aspects of Maxwell Lord’s personality and really delve into what drives him to do the things he does,” Gunn said. “I wanted to make him more of a formidable and formidable antagonist for the Justice League.”

Fans have been eagerly anticipating Gunn’s take on Maxwell Lord, and from the sounds of it, they won’t be disappointed. “Justice League: Rebirth” is set to hit theaters next year, and with Gunn at the helm, it’s sure to be a memorable and thrilling ride.

  • James Gunn is Playing With Fire: The Unforgivable Past of Guy Gardner That Even Nathan Fillion’s Charm Can’t Save in ‘Superman’

James Gunn is Playing With Fire: The Unforgivable Past of Guy Gardner That Even Nathan Fillion’s Charm Can’t Save in ‘Superman’

James Gunn’s upcoming Superman movie is set to introduce Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, a Green Lantern with a controversial comic book past. While fans are eager to see Fillion’s interpretation of the character, questions arise about how the Dcu will navigate Gardner’s problematic history, including moments that reflect poorly on his character even within the canon of the comics.

This, unfortunately, includes the one instance when Gardner was seen, at least momentarily, considering ra***g a knocked down Power-Girl. While highly unlikely that any interpretation of this scene will make its way to Superman, the fact that Gardner is in fact, part of the movie, is bound to raise concern.

Guy Gardner’s history in DC Comics is marked by moments…

James Gunn is Playing With Fire: The Unforgivable Past of Guy Gardner That Even Nathan Fillion’s Charm Can’t Save in ‘Superman’

James Gunn, known for his work on the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, is set to tackle the world of DC Comics with his upcoming film ‘Superman’. However, Gunn may be playing with fire by including the character of Guy Gardner, a former Green Lantern with a controversial past that may be unforgivable.

Guy Gardner is known for his brash and arrogant personality, often clashing with his fellow superheroes and causing trouble wherever he goes. But it’s his dark history that may prove to be his undoing in ‘Superman’.

In the comics, Guy Gardner has been portrayed as a racist and sexist character, making derogatory comments towards women and people of color. These actions have led many fans to label him as an unforgivable character, with some even calling for his removal from the DC universe altogether.

Even the charm of actor Nathan Fillion, who is rumored to be playing Guy Gardner in ‘Superman’, may not be enough to save the character from his past transgressions. While Fillion is known for his likable and charismatic performances, he may not be able to overcome the stain of Guy Gardner’s history.

James Gunn has a reputation for taking risks with his films, but including Guy Gardner in ‘Superman’ may be a risk too far. The character’s unforgivable past may prove to be too much for even Gunn to handle, and could ultimately lead to backlash from fans and critics alike.

Only time will tell if James Gunn can navigate the treacherous waters of Guy Gardner’s past and deliver a successful ‘Superman’ film. But one thing is for certain – he’s playing with fire by including such a controversial character in his latest project.
