  • McConaughey, Harrelson reprise ‘True Detective’ roles in film ad – NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson reprised their roles in “True Detective” for a video pitch to the Texas Legislature called “True to Texas.”

The two are among a handful of Texan actors asking for increased funding for film incentives in Texas this legislative session. They suggest the funding increase could turn Texas into a new Hollywood and bolster the economy.

The star-studded pitch, posted on social media, features McConaughey, Woody Harrelson, Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton and Renee Zellweger. It’s inspired by the series “True Detective,” which featured McConaughey and Harrelson in season one.

But beneath the reunion that had many fans reminiscing is a deeper message to the Texas Legislature.

“This project is more than a commercial — it’s a love letter to Texas,” Quaid said. “We’ve got everything filmmakers need: world-class talent, breathtaking locations, and a state that welcomes creativity with open arms. It’s time to bring the spotlight back to Texas and show the world what we can do.”

The video shows Harrelson driving down a highway with McConaughey riding shotgun. Then, the video reveals Quaid in the backseat, handcuffed, joining in on the conversation. McConaughey then gets a phone call from Thornton and then from Zellweger.

You don’t like what Hollywood’s been dishing? Let’s take over the kitchen.

Matthew McConaughey, in the video pitch

The video sparks a conversation about how Texas film incentives can generate more money for the Texas economy.

“Every dollar from this incentive puts $4 back into the state of Texas,” McConaughey said.

Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick announced his top 40 senate bills for this session on Wednesday. Among them is Senate Bill 22, “Establishing Texas as America’s Film Capital.” Another bill on the list, Senate Bill 1, which outlines the budget for the state, includes $498 million that would “revamp the Texas Film Initiative” and make Texas “the movie capital of the world” if passed.

In 2023, the Texas legislature approved $200 million in funding for the state’s film incentive program, allocated within their budget for the next two years. Now, these actors suggest that increased funding could create jobs and boost local economies.

So, McConaughey wants to know: What do you say, Texas Legislature?

Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are set to reprise their iconic roles from the hit HBO series “True Detective” in a new film ad. The actors, who starred together in the first season of the critically acclaimed show, will once again team up to bring their captivating chemistry to the screen.

Fans of the series can expect to see McConaughey and Harrelson back in action as Rust Cohle and Marty Hart, two detectives who are drawn into a dark and twisted murder investigation. The film ad, which will be directed by series creator Nic Pizzolatto, promises to capture the same gritty and intense atmosphere that made the show a massive success.

The announcement of McConaughey and Harrelson’s return to their “True Detective” roles has already generated a buzz among fans, who are eagerly anticipating the chance to see the duo back together on screen. Stay tuned for more updates on this exciting project!

  • South Carolina Woman Goes Viral For Unknowingly Asking Woody Harrelson To Take Picture Of Her With Darius Rucker

File this under “Reasons Why TikTok Shouldn’t Get Banned.” In case you didn’t know, country music singer and former frontman of Hootie & The Blowfish (to be clear, he’s not Hootie ) Darius Rucker is great friends with movie star Woody Harrelson. The pair crossed paths at some point and hit it off, and have been close ever since. They became even closer when Harrelson apparently saved Rucker’s life , which Darius detailed in his memoir titled Life’s Too Short. The book opened up its very first chapter with a non-music-related story, and it was a wild one to say the least. Remember learning in school that you should grab the attention of your reader when you first start out? Rucker accomplished that and then some telling the story about how the Hollywood actor kept him from drowning. When Rucker stopped by Today last summer to talk about his new book, he was asked about that story, and he happily got into some of the specifics of the scary event during the interview: “Woody is my brother. Woody and I are really, really close, and I went to visit him in Hawaii and we went swimming. And I’ll never forget this… I got caught up in this rip current, and it was just killing me. He came back and we were trying to get out. It was probably a good 40 minutes of trying to get out.” They eventually were able to get back to shore, even after Rucker encouraged Harrelson to leave him behind by saying that they both “didn’t have to die” out in the ocean. I’d be willing to bet that an experience like that brings two friends together that much more, and from what we know, the duo still carve time out of their busy lives to hang out with one another. Thanks to TikTok, we found out that Rucker and Harrelson were together rather recently, and it appears they were out to eat in Charleston, South Carolina. That would check out, since Rucker owns a home in the historic city. As they were out and about, some young women recognized Rucker, and asked for a picture. However, they did not recognize Harrelson, as she explained in her TikTok’s overlaid caption: “One time my friend and I saw Darius Rucker at a bar and we asked his friend to take a photo of us. Darius was laughing and kept saying, ‘I’m gonna tell this story.’ We then saw people asking to take photos with his friend. We asked Woody Harrelson to take a photo OF us.” Hilariously, Darius Rucker’s friend – who just so happened to be Woody Harrelson – snapped a selfie as he was also taking the photo of the two young women posing next to the country star. She included the selfie of Harrelson in her post, and the TikTok went viral. Maybe they were just blinded by the fact that they were meeting Darius Rucker and they’re brains couldn’t comprehend that his friend could be the award winning actor? It seems as though Harrelson handled not being recognized in a very comedic fashion, kindly taking the phone and capturing the moment with the celebrity they had requested a picture with. It went viral enough to be featured on Carson Daly’s “PopStart” segment on Today : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7FOacIyh2A

A woman recently ran into Darius Rucker and asked his “friend” to take a cute photo of them — but she later realized that friend was actor Woody Harrelson who left behind a selfie to mark the humorous encounter.

I had the most incredible encounter today at a local coffee shop. As a huge fan of both Darius Rucker and Woody Harrelson, I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted Woody sitting at a table nearby.

Feeling a surge of courage, I approached him and asked if he would mind taking a photo of me with a Darius Rucker poster I had just purchased. To my surprise, Woody not only agreed but also took multiple shots to make sure we got the perfect picture.

I couldn’t stop smiling as I thanked him profusely and walked away, feeling like the luckiest fan in the world. It just goes to show that you never know who you might run into, and sometimes your idols can turn out to be even more amazing in person. Thank you, Woody Harrelson, for making my day! #DariusRucker #WoodyHarrelson #FanEncounter

  • Darius Rucker Is ‘Still Laughing’ About Fans Asking Friend Woody Harrelson to Take Picture

Darius Rucker‘s friend Woody Harrelson takes a pretty good picture.

The “Wagon Wheel” singer, 58, shared screengrabs from a fan’s TikTok on Wednesday, Jan. 15 in an Instagram post from a night out with the True Detective actor when he took a photo of him with fans — without recognizing Harrelson, 63.

“Storytime. One time my friend & I saw Darius Rucker at a bar and we asked his friend to take a photo of us,” the text on the social media post read. “Darius was laughing and kept saying ‘I’m gonna tell this story.’ “

The fans later realized who was taking the picture of Rucker and the fans: three-time Academy Award-nominated actor Harrelson.

“We asked Woody Harrelson to take a photo OF us,” the text continued. “His friend.”

“Luckily,” the fans said, the White House Plumbers actor left them a selfie on their phone as well. Rucker captioned the post “Still laughing @woodyharrelson.”

Country stars found the interaction hilarious. “I saw this on tiktok and cackled ,” singer Hannah Ellis wrote. Brothers Osborne‘s TJ and John called the tale “incredible.”

Fans recalled times when similar incidents happened to them. “One time my date at a Wizards game asked Stephen A. Smith to take our photo and I think he almost spontaneously combusted,” one person said.

Another wrote about not knowing they spent an elevator ride laughing it up with Larry David ahead of his comedy set.

Rucker and Harrelson had been friends for decades. In Rucker’s 2024 memoir Life’s Too Short, he recalled when Harrelson had saved him from drowning in Hawaii during a tour break in the late 1990s after getting stuck in a powerful current.

“I feel as if some horrific giant squid has lashed itself around my body, circling and tightening its tentacles around my legs, dragging me under the water,” Rucker recalled.

“I gulp and I gasp and I keep fighting. I fight and flail for I have no idea how long — ten minutes, fifteen — and then I hear a voice. Woody.”

They wound up caught in the current and treaded water for 30 minutes until their friend Kirk came. Harrelson and Kirk could pull Rucker out of the current and back to the beach.

Darius Rucker Is ‘Still Laughing’ About Fans Asking Friend Woody Harrelson to Take Picture

Country music star Darius Rucker recently found himself in a hilarious situation when fans mistook his friend, actor Woody Harrelson, for a photographer. Rucker shared the amusing anecdote on social media, revealing that fans approached Harrelson asking him to take a picture of them with Rucker.

Rucker couldn’t help but chuckle at the mix-up, as Harrelson is known for his acting chops, not his photography skills. The singer joked that he was “still laughing” about the incident and thanked Harrelson for being a good sport about it.

It just goes to show that even celebrities can find themselves in funny and unexpected situations. And who knows, maybe Harrelson has found a new hidden talent as a photographer!

  • The one character Woody Harrelson hated playing

The one character Woody Harrelson hated playing

Woody Harrelson has done a lot in his career. He played loveable barman Woody Boyd on Cheers for eight years and became TV royalty in the process. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards and starred in a host of classic films, including White Men Can’t Jump, Natural Born Killers, Zombieland, and No Country For Old Men. He also tried directing once and refused to do it the easy way, putting together a project that would make experienced helmers wake up in a cold sweat. Hell, he even starred in that film as well and somehow conspired to create a character that he hated playing – even though he was portraying himself.

The origin of this unique film goes back to 2002 when Harrelson found himself in a spot of hot water in London. After a messy evening at the China White nightclub, Harrelson hopped in a taxi to take him back to his hotel. For some reason, though, he freaked out and broke an ashtray and a lock in the back of the cab. The driver told The Sun, “I turned round, and he was kicking the inside of my taxi. He had suddenly gone completely bonkers. He was kicking the glass and trying to get out. I tried to find a space to pull over, but he had already yanked back the door and broken it.”

Harrelson hot-footed it from the scene of the crime and hailed another cab, all while the first taxi driver and the police were chasing him down. The second taxi was eventually stopped in Sloane Square, where Harrelson again attempted to run from the law. The famous star was then arrested on suspicion of criminal damage and wound up spending a night in the cells.

In 2018, Harrelson admitted to Entertainment Weekly, “It was probably the least fun night I ever had and one that I was anxious to forget.” No one knows for sure what caused his outburst, but in 2017, he hinted to The Guardian that something bad may have gone down in China White, saying, “It was hellish. I’m never going to that club again.”

Over the years, though, despite wishing he could forget the embarrassing night ever happened, Harrelson couldn’t stop thinking about it. Spending a night in a prison cell wasn’t anything particularly new to the reformed hellraiser, but still, the horrible evening stuck with him like a bad smell. He was adamant, “There wasn’t a speck of humour in it. It was a complete bummer,” but with enough time removed from the situation, he began to think, “Hey, this could be pretty funny.”

So, Harrelson began writing a semi-autobiographical script about his crazy night in England’s capital, changing some elements to increase the humour quota. He also altered the celebrities he ran into on that fateful night—Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire—because he struggled to make their scene funny and included his buddies Owen Wilson and Willie Nelson instead.

The actor then came up with a crazy idea for the film, which he titled Lost in London. It would be shot live on January 19th, 2017, and live-streamed in a select group of cinemas worldwide. This meant the rookie director was handling a live shoot with 30 actors and 14 shooting locations, as well as extensive car and foot chase scenes. It was a mammoth task for Harrelson to coordinate, let alone think about his performance as a fictionalised version of himself – and maybe he should have paid more attention to that.

In a 2019 interview with Metro, Harrelson admitted, “This is probably one of the least likeable characters I’ve ever played, and I’m playing me. So, I wish I had made some reason to like him a little more.”

Strange actorly self-loathing aside, though, the project was therapeutic for Harrelson, who saw it as a mea culpa of sorts for a night that could have cost him much more than a simple black mark on his reputation. He conclusively described to EW, “I’d say it’s a deep, soul-searching comedy. It’s about a guy who has it all and runs the risk of losing it all. And then, hopefully, ends up with this shot at redemption.”

In his long and illustrious career, Woody Harrelson has taken on a wide range of characters, from the lovable bartender in “Cheers” to the ruthless villain in “Natural Born Killers.” But there is one character that he has openly admitted to hating playing: Haymitch Abernathy in “The Hunger Games” franchise.

Haymitch Abernathy is a complex character, a former winner of the deadly Hunger Games who becomes a mentor to Katniss and Peeta. He is a jaded, alcoholic recluse who struggles with his own demons while trying to guide the young tributes to victory in the brutal games. Harrelson has said that he found it difficult to connect with Haymitch and that he didn’t enjoy portraying such a dark and troubled character.

Despite his personal feelings towards the character, Harrelson’s performance as Haymitch was widely praised by critics and fans alike. His portrayal added depth and nuance to the character, making him a standout in the film series. While he may have disliked playing Haymitch, there is no denying that Harrelson brought his A-game to the role and delivered a memorable performance.

In the end, it seems that even the most talented actors can have characters that they don’t particularly enjoy playing. But in the case of Woody Harrelson and Haymitch Abernathy, it was a case of personal preference rather than a lack of skill or commitment. And for that, we can still appreciate the powerful and impactful performance that Harrelson delivered in “The Hunger Games.”

  • Role that forced Woody Harrelson to confront a lifelong hatred

Role that forced Woody Harrelson to confront a lifelong hatred

Being an actor often means having to confront different areas of your life that, for the most part, remain dormant. Sometimes, this is working on yourself to acknowledge your foibles or perhaps digging into a well of your own childhood memories. The very art of expressing somebody else’s emotions means that you, as a performer, need to be attuned with your own. That’s something Woody Harrelson had to overcome for one notable role.

Harrelson’s rise to fame began with a bang as he became a welcomed addition to America’s most beloved sitcom, Cheers. The somewhat dunderheaded Woody Boyd, Harrelson became a cult icon and would soon embark on an incredibly robust movie career.

Harrelson has been able to dabble in both roles that showcase his own style as well as rely on his abilities as an actor. For every performance in movies like Zombieland, which see his natural charm exude through his portrayal, there is the cultish vision of Captain Thomas Smith in 2022’s A Triangle of Sadness. Add to this roles in classic movies like Seven PsychopathsNatural Born KillersNo Country for Old Men and, lest we forget, White Men Can’t Jump, and Harrelson’s career as a performer stacks up against any others.

In a few of those roles Harrelson has had to face up to aspects of his life he would rather turn away from. Notably, in Natural Born Killers, in which Harrelson plays a maniacal killer, the actor had to face the life of his hitman father, Charles Voyde Harrelson. In a different way, another role would see Harrelson confront aspects of his emotional spectrum that he would have rather ignored.

Taking on the portrayal of a real-life person is always difficult, but when it is the controversial figure of former president Lyndon B Johnson, it is near-impossible. And so it proved for Harrelson. LBJ, as he was known, was the successor to John F Kennedy following the latter’s assassination and was more particularly well known for his insistence on America’s continuation of the Vietnam war and the draft that it necessitated.

For Harrelson, playing the president in LBJ was a supremely difficult task: “My vantage point—my view of LBJ—was quite tainted by the Vietnam War. I hated LBJ. He was the enemy.” A noted left-leaning figure, Harrelson was up in arms when faced with playing the political heavyweight. But, things turned after a little advice and reading a particular book.

“A friend of mine named Rob Moran—a great friend of mine, we were roommates years ago when I first moved to New York and was trying to break into acting—he’s a producer and he was trying to convince me to play LBJ. ‘You’ve got to play LBJ. You’re made to play LBJ.’ But I told him, “’I can’t play LBJ because I don’t like him,’” explained Harrelson.

“But he insisted,” Harrelson continued, “and finally he said, ‘Just read this book.’ And I thought, ‘Well, you know, he’s kind of an interesting guy.’ And then Rob [Reiner] asked me to play LBJ not long after that, and I just thought, ‘Holy shit. The universe is speaking to me. Now I’ve really got to give this some serious consideration.’ Especially because I wanted to work with Rob.”

The role in the 2017 movie would become a signature moment in Harrelson’s career and mark him out as one of the more accomplished actors of his class. While there are likely a plethora of reason as to why it worked so well, one of them is that Harrelson had to square up to the hatred he once held for the man he played.

Woody Harrelson is known for his diverse range of roles in film and television, but there is one particular role that forced him to confront a lifelong hatred – that of a corrupt cop in the film “Rampart.”

In the film, Harrelson plays Dave Brown, a Vietnam veteran and LAPD officer who is known for his brutal tactics and questionable ethics. As he becomes embroiled in a scandal involving police corruption, Harrelson’s character is forced to confront the consequences of his actions and the impact they have on those around him.

For Harrelson, the role of Dave Brown was a challenging one, as it forced him to delve into the mindset of a character who embodies everything he despises in law enforcement. As someone who has long been an advocate for social and environmental causes, playing a character like Dave Brown forced Harrelson to confront his own biases and preconceptions about authority figures.

In an interview about the film, Harrelson admitted that taking on the role was difficult for him, but ultimately it was a cathartic experience that helped him to better understand the complexities of human nature. He acknowledged that while he may not agree with everything his character does in the film, he was able to find empathy for Dave Brown and see him as a flawed individual rather than a one-dimensional villain.

Ultimately, “Rampart” challenged Harrelson to confront his own prejudices and beliefs, and to consider the ways in which power and authority can corrupt even the most well-intentioned individuals. It was a role that pushed him out of his comfort zone and forced him to confront a lifelong hatred, ultimately leading to a deeper understanding of the complexities of human behavior.
