  • Donald Trump is waging a very public war on Jerome Powell—so why hasn’t he picked up the phone?

    • Analysis: President Trump’s one-sided war against the Fed doesn’t show any signs of abating. And yet Federal Open Market Committee Chairman Jerome Powell says he hasn’t had any contact with the new occupant of the White House.

Even before President Donald Trump got the keys to the White House, he was repeatedly attacking the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) and its chairman, Jerome Powell. Yet now that he’s in the Oval Office, the commander in chief hasn’t even picked up the phone.

Trump has variously said he would fire Powell (the man he himself appointed), then declared he would allow Powell to finish his tenure if he complied with Trump’s desires.

Most recently he blamed the Fed for inflation, writing on his social media platform, Truth Social, that it spends too much time on issues such as “DEI, gender ideology, ‘green’ energy, and fake climate change.”

But despite the public dunking, it seems Trump hasn’t taken the fight directly to Powell. “I’ve had no contact,” Powell responded when questioned by reporters this week if he had spoken with the president.

The public lambasting may simply be a case of Trump signaling to his supporters that he is intensely focused on inflation. Price rises dominated the political rhetoric in the run-up to the election with the Republican politician promising to bring grocery prices “way down.”

The message resonated well with voters. After all, 41% of Americans named inflation as their top economic issue heading into the November elections, according to a Bankrate study of more than 2,000 people.

Voters also elected Trump because they believed he would handle the economy better than his rival Kamala Harris. In a Gallup survey of more than 900 registered voters, 54% trusted Trump with the economy while 45% sided with Harris.

So President Trump’s mandate to bring down prices is clear—and yet he hasn’t picked up the phone or driven across Washington, D.C., to meet with the man who directly influences the metric.

That may be because on some level, he knows he can’t.

    Importance of Fed independence

What has surprised—and in some cases appalled—economists about Trump’s attempts to influence the Fed is that this tactic has not worked out well in the past.

The fundamental point of having an independent central bank—mandated to keep inflation at a base level of 2% and maximize employment—is that it is not beholden to the whims of politicians who revolve in and out of power once every four or five years.

The FOMC’s goals look to the long-term prosperity of the economy, not to manipulate its health twice a decade in order to install a certain individual in the Oval Office.

Powell has been clear on this, telling reporters back in September: “This is my fourth presidential election at the Fed, and it’s always the same.

“We’re always going into this meeting and asking, ‘What’s the right thing to do for the people we serve?’ … That’s always what it is, it’s never about anything else. Nothing else is discussed.”

A quick look at the history books is a reminder of why Fed independence is so critical.

In the 1970s, when President Richard Nixon was seeking reelection, he said of then–Fed Chairman Arthur Burns: “I respect his independence. However, I hope that independently he will conclude that my views are the ones that should be followed.”

Chairman Burns proceeded to follow the not-so-subtle hint, which in turn led to a period of stagflation—a possibility which still keeps the likes of JPMorgan CEO Jamie Dimon awake at night.

    The Fed and democracy

In Trump’s continued baiting of the Fed, it might seem that any response from Chairman Powell is a bite.

But the Fed boss—and his peers—are aware that they are ultimately accountable to the public. Outright ignoring Uncle Sam’s democratically elected leader may not be the best way to demonstrate this.

The “elected vs. appointed” argument is one Vice President JD Vance has made himself—while conveniently overlooking the fact that President Trump brought in Powell in his first administration.

Vance told CNN’s Dana Bash last summer: “Agree or disagree, we should have America’s elected leaders having input about the most important decisions confronting the country.

“It would be a huge change, but whether the country goes to war, what our interest rates are, these are important questions that American democracy should have important answers for.”

Public accountability is a topic Fortune has put to multiple Fed presidents.

The leader of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, Austan Goolsbee, explained: “Central banks should be held accountable for their actions. And they are. The evidence of what happened during the COVID times, in my view, [is that] there’s a lot of public accountability on the central banks—not just in the United States but everywhere—and that’s totally fine.

“That’s a completely different issue than: ‘Do elections drive monetary policy decisions?’”

Likewise Boston Fed President Susan Collins highlighted the fundamental target of her work is to improve the lives of American households. She told Fortune: “It’s important for people to understand the role of the FOMC or monetary policy at the Federal Reserve because of the importance of price stability and maximum employment for people’s everyday lives.

“It impacts individuals and their families and the communities that they live in. It impacts micro firms [and] individual entrepreneurs all the way up to our global multinational corporations. In order to have an environment that sustains rising living standards for our citizens, sustaining a low stable inflation and an environment with maximum employment really matters for all of us.

“That is what the FOMC is charged by Congress to do. That’s our job.”

Indeed Powell said he and his FOMC peers would be seeking “new ideas and critical feedback” from the public this year especially, as the group holds its five-year review of its monetary policy strategy.

“Our review will again include outreach and public events involving a wide range of parties, including Fed Listens events around the country and a research conference in May,” Powell said on Jan. 29 in his post–Fed meeting press conference.

    Don’t spook the markets

Usually the Fed and the Treasury can expect to enjoy a fairly cozy relationship. Weekly breakfast meetings are the standard, Powell told the New York Times DealBook Summit last year—though whether the tradition will be adopted by new Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent remains to be seen.

And while the FOMC may deliberately ignore the behests of Wall Street, it also won’t want to upset the markets to the point of tipping them into a downward spiral—putting both jobs and prices at risk as a result.

Already analysts are hedging their bets on the tension between Trump and Powell. As UBS chief economist Paul Donovan said in an update on Jan. 30: “The idea of a March rate cut was called into question by the tone of the policy decision, and it’s not unreasonable to suppose that a March rate cut would be a higher probability if there were more certainty about the nature of the new administration’s policies.

“There might be a risk … that over-criticism by Trump might tilt the Fed toward hawkishness in any future close-call decision, in order to prove the Fed’s independence is beyond reproach.”

Donald Trump is waging a very public war on Jerome Powell—so why hasn’t he picked up the phone?

In recent weeks, President Donald Trump has been openly criticizing Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, blaming him for the economic downturn and calling for his removal. Trump has even gone as far as to compare Powell to a golfer who can’t putt and has questioned whether Powell is a greater enemy than China’s President Xi Jinping.

Despite this very public and aggressive stance against Powell, one question remains: why hasn’t Trump picked up the phone and had a direct conversation with the man he is attacking?

Many political analysts believe that a direct conversation between Trump and Powell could potentially resolve some of the tension and animosity between the two. It could allow Trump to express his concerns and frustrations directly to Powell, rather than through Twitter or the media.

However, others argue that Trump’s attacks on Powell are more about political posturing and deflecting blame for the economic challenges facing the country. In this view, a phone call would not change Trump’s strategy of using Powell as a scapegoat for his administration’s economic policies.

Whatever the reason may be, it is clear that the ongoing public war between Trump and Powell is causing uncertainty and volatility in the markets. Perhaps a simple phone call could help to ease tensions and provide a more constructive way forward for both parties.

  • Troy Aikman says he hasn’t heard from the NFL about his officiating criticism

ESPN’s Troy Aikman pulls no punches when it comes to officiating blunders. And despite the league’s tendency toward the supersensitive when it comes to criticism of officials, Aikman says he’s never gotten any blowback from 345 Park Avenue.

“I never have,” Aikman told Jimmy Traina of SI.com. “I’ve never heard from the league.”

It’s possible that the league doesn’t raise its concerns to Aikman directly (as it should), but that it instead whines to his bosses instead. (Which has happened elsewhere. I’m told.)

Aikman realizes the job isn’t easy, but difficulty of profession doesn’t operate as insulation from criticism.

“I know the officials have a tough job,” Aikman told Traina. “The scrutiny that they’re under, as we’ve gotten more advanced with instant replay, those guys, it seems, have become more and more scrutinized.

“And the game has not become less controversial. It’s become more controversial. But then I just think we are at a point, and this is tipped a little bit because the league is partners with a number of these gambling services. So here you are promoting gambling, people are gambling more than they have ever before and those types of calls, there’s a lot at stake regardless, but especially when you’re considering there’s a lot of money that’s changing hands with these calls as well.

“So, I think that we owe it to the fans that we get it right, and I think that we are at a point and time where we can. We can get it more right. That was my position and just trying to lean on the NFL and say, ‘Hey, we gotta fix this. We gotta address this in the offseason.’”

He’s right. In late 2023, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones argued that the two teams in a given game submit to the possibility that the game’s outcome will be influenced by a bad call (which is always a good call for the other team). But as the NFL continues to profit from all things betting, those who have wagered on games aren’t making that same deal.

They don’t want to lose a wager based on a bad call. And, eventually and inevitably, there will be a sports-betting scandal that turns the NFL upside down.

Until it happens, the NFL will keep jamming sports books dollars inside its pockets. While also spending as little as possible to eliminate officiating errors.

Former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst Troy Aikman recently spoke out about his frustration with the officiating in the NFL, but he says he hasn’t heard from the league about his comments.

In an interview on a sports radio show, Aikman criticized the inconsistency of the officials and questioned their ability to make the right calls on the field. He also expressed concern about the impact that bad officiating could have on the integrity of the game.

Despite his outspoken comments, Aikman says he hasn’t received any communication from the NFL regarding his criticism. He stands by his remarks and believes that it’s important to hold the officials accountable for their actions.

It remains to be seen if the league will address Aikman’s concerns or if they will continue to ignore his remarks. In the meantime, Aikman remains a vocal advocate for improving the officiating in the NFL.

  • Karl-Anthony Towns’ shooting slump hasn’t hurt Knicks yet

The Knicks have been rolling with five consecutive wins, even with a downturn in production from 3-point range by All-Star center Karl-Anthony Towns over that span.

Towns had been shooting a career-best 44.9 percent from long distance through Jan. 13 before sitting out two games with a sprain and bone chip in his right thumb

Towns still leads all Knicks regulars at 42.4 percent, but he has missed 15 of his last 18 attempts from beyond the arc during the winning streak entering Saturday night’s home game against the Lakers, including an 0-for-4 showing in Wednesday’s win over the Nuggets.

Kevin McCullar Jr., the Knicks’ second-round pick (56th overall) out of Kansas, made his professional debut Thursday night for G League Westchester following a collegiate knee injury.

The 6-foot-6 forward scored 10 points on 4-for-9 shooting in 16 minutes in a loss to the Osceola Magic.

“Man, after a long year, it felt good to be back out there competing!” the 23-year-old McCullar posted on X. “God is so good.”

Anthony Davis (abdominal strain) and Christian Wood (knee) are out for the Lakers.

Dorian Finney-Smith (shoulder) and Gabe Vincent (knee) are questionable, while LeBron James (knee) and Rui Hachimura (calf) are probable.

Josh Hart (right knee soreness) is listed as questionable again for the Knicks.

Seldom-used rookie Pacome Dadiet is out with a sprained toe.

The Knicks’ bench has provided a nice lift during the team’s winning streak.

Miles McBride has netted 26 points over the past two games, with Precious Achiuwa totaling 22 and Cam Payne 18 in the wins earlier this week over the Grizzlies and the Nuggets.

Landry Shamet also has been a part of a nine-man rotation in all five games, notching a season-high nine points last Saturday against the Kings.

Karl-Anthony Towns, one of the New York Knicks’ key players, has been struggling with his shooting lately. However, his shooting slump hasn’t seemed to hurt the team yet.

Despite shooting below his usual percentages, Towns has still been contributing in other ways on the court. His rebounding, passing, and defense have all been solid, helping to make up for his lackluster shooting. Additionally, the rest of the team has been stepping up to pick up the slack and secure wins.

While it’s important for Towns to find his shooting rhythm again, it’s reassuring to see the Knicks performing well even when one of their star players isn’t at his best. This just goes to show the depth and resilience of the team, and bodes well for their success moving forward.

  • Love Island fans beg for movie night as they predict epic meltdown after Curtis brushed off romance with Ekin-Su to Danielle and claim he ‘hasn’t changed’ since brutally dumping Amy in series 5

Love Island viewers have predicted movie night could end in an epic meltdown after Curtis Pritchard spent a night in the hideaway with bombshell Danielle Sellers.

Curtis, 28, has been romancing Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, 30, throughout the second series of Love Island: All Stars, with them both claiming they are ‘closed off’ to each other.

However, fans have insisted Curtis did not given the impression of a taken man when he was whisked off on a date with Danielle, who picked him upon her villa arrival.

While Curtis said he was ‘closed off’ to Ekin-Su, he followed it up by insisting he ‘barely knew’ her – as viewers begged for the moment to be shown on movie night.

Movie night reveals private moments between Islanders to the rest of the cast and typically results in tension and rows when hidden secrets are revealed.

Viewers have forecast that Ekin-Su will create a scene of colossal proportions, which they likened to a memorable moment between Curtis and his ex Amy Hart during season five of the show.

Curtis, 28, has been romancing Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu, 30, throughout the second series of Love Island: All Stars , with them both claiming they are ‘closed off’ to each other

They claimed that Curtis ‘hasn’t changed’ as he seemingly did a 180 on Ekin-Su, in the same way that he previously did to Amy during their series.

After both returning from the Casa Amor twist, Curtis and Amy had a discussion where he revealed his head had been turned by model Jourdan Riane.

Curtis famously left Amy reeling when she discovered that ahead of recoupling with her, he he’d shown an interest in pursuing Jourdan who he met in Casa Amor, with a devastated Amy informing him that she was gearing up to confess her love to him.

Following the breakdown of their romance, Amy decided to leave the villa and quit the show to escape watching Curtis and Maura Higgins‘ relationship blossom.

    Sharing their thoughts on Curtis’ antics on Wednesday’s episode, they said: ‘All it took was one woman for Curtis’ head to turn. He hasn’t changed! What’; ‘I don’t really know the girl – Movie Night is going to finisshhhhh Curtis’;

    ‘Roll the rapes, bring on movie night Ekin needs to see what Curtis really said #LoveIsland’; ‘F*** Curtis’; ‘Oh look, it’s Curtis being Curtis *pretends to be shocked*’; ‘Curtis gets the slightest attention from the opposite gender and runs with it #LoveIsland’;

    ‘Ekin is going down the Amy route I fear’; ‘This is the Curtis I recognise’; ‘The way Curtis has gaslight Ekin, this is exactly what he did to Amy!!’; ‘Sorry did I just hear Curtis say “I don’t even know the girl” to Danielle about Ekin??’; ‘Curti is actually the villian in this scenario’;

‘I was rooting for this Curtis! He want Ekin to spiral so he can move on to the new girl without being the guy bad’; ‘Curtis has been a f*** boy idk why y’all are surprised’.

On Wednesday, Ekin-Su pulled on viewer’s heartstrings as she broke down in Ronnie Vint’s arms after Curtis enjoyed his night in the hideaway.

In the tearful moment, Ekin-Su got emotional as she saw Curtiscrack on with newcomer Danielle.

New bombshell Danielle picked Curtis to join her in the hideaway for a flirty sleepover, while fellow newbie Sammy Root picked Elma Pazar.

While Curtis and Ekin-Su have told each other they are ‘closed off’ and not looking to get to know anyone else who comes in, it appears Danielle has caught his eye.

At the end of the episode, Curtis told Danielle he ‘regrets’ saying he was closed off with Ekin-Su and is keen to pursue Danielle.

As Ekin-Su spotted their flirty chat, she broke down in tears and was comforted by Ronnie.

Meanwhile, fans blasted Ekin-Su‘s ‘overreaction’ to Curtis staying in the hideaway with Danielle.

Fans were left in hysterics as they claimed Ekin-Su was ‘making a deal out of nothing to get air time’.

Series 10 contestant Sammy also stars on TOWIE and is looking forward to ruffling feathers with his villa entrance.

Sammy bagged the cash prize after winning the series alongside Jess Harding but called off their romance soon after they returned home.

Speaking about his fresh chance at love, Sammy explained: ‘It did work out for me the first time, but things changed when I left the Villa. Hopefully this time round, I’ll leave with a relationship that goes the distance.

‘Last time I was very much a boy and was immature at times in terms of not thinking about my actions beforehand.’

He continued: ‘Now looking back, I feel like I’ve changed a lot and I’d like to think I’ve grown from a boy to a gentleman.’

Danielle, who appeared in series three, is looking to find the man of her dreams as she returns.

After appearing on the show as a bombshell in Casa Amor last time, Danielle is hoping she finds more luck this time round.

She said: ‘I was a lot younger going in the first time, I was 21! I entered during Casa Amor and lots of the boys were in strong couples! 8 years on, I’m older and know what I want, so I’m going to just go for it!’

  • ‘Fear hasn’t paralyzed us’: anxiety and action in Chicago amid immigration raids | US immigration

Some corners of Chicago have been unnervingly quiet this week.

Residents who have lived in the city for decades without immigration documents have been worried about leaving their homes. Undocumented parents have been signing powers of attorney to ease custody issues if they are detained and separated from their children. Business owners are deputizing employees to take care of their affairs if anything happens.

But in other ways, the city has been buzzing with action. Know Your Rights workshops taking place at community centers, local parks and union meetings across the city have been packed with participants. A network of local advocates has been coordinating to track operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (Ice) agents, and connect the families of those detained with legal aid.

“The administration wants to instill in all of us fear tactics. They want to paralyze us. They want to make us immobilized by this moment,” said US representative Delia Ramirez at a press conference at Chicago’s Malcolm X college on Wednesday. “But what does the community and the state of Illinois do when we are under attack? We stand up and we fight back, folks.”

Chicago had been bracing for raids for months, ever since Donald Trump won the election and signalled he would be enacting his campaign promise of “mass deportations” as soon as he took office. In advance of inauguration, reports were already circulating that the city would be an early target.

Since then, Ice, the largest branch of the Department of Homeland Security, announced that it would be conducting “enhanced targeted operations” in Chicago along with several other federal agencies, including the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the US Marshals service. The Illinois governor, JB Pritzker, said the raids could target up to 2,000 people in the city.

The scale of the raids, which are targeting people all across the region, has been chilling, said Tovia Siegel, the director of organizing and leadership at the Resurrection Project, an advocacy group that provides legal aid and community education for immigrants.

“It’s causing really significant fear, and it’s causing people not to leave the house, not to want to go to work or bring their kids to school,” she said.

Agents have been primarily apprehending people at their homes, Siegel said. Officers in unmarked vehicles and those wearing the insignia of various federal agencies have confused people, she said. “We’re seeing children who are terrified their parents are not going to be there when they get home from school.”

Trump and his appointees have emphasised that the raids are targeting criminals, but people with and without criminal histories have been apprehended so far.

“It’s being articulated that there’s a prioritization of dealing with criminals, but the impact is wider,” said Kwame Raoul, Illinois’s attorney general, who has been an outspoken critic of Trump’s immigration orders and is one of several Democratic attorney generals suing the administration over its efforts to end birthright citizenship for the children of undocumented people.

US citizens and legal residents are being swept up in the raids, Raoul said, “whether intended or as unintended consequences of racial profiling”.

Adding to the unease is the administration’s decision to lift a longstanding ban on immigration raids in schools, churches and hospitals. Late last week, Chicago public schools officials announced that they had spotted immigration agents at Hamline elementary school in the city’s south-west side. It later became clear that the officers were from the Secret Service, and were not conducting immigration enforcement. But the incident has nonetheless continued to unnerve parents and educators

In Chicago’s ward 25, which encompasses Pilsen and is made up of many immigrants, Alderman Byron Sigcho-Lopez said that right after the Secret Service incident, attendance at high schools had declined by at least a third, and attendance was even lower at elementary schools. In Chicago’s Brighton Park neighborhood and Little Village, home to many Mexican American and other immigrant families, neighborhood associations who run afterschool programs said they noticed significant drops in attendance.

At the Lincoln United Methodist church in Chicago’s Pilsen neighborhood, where about three-quarters of residents are Mexican American, the Spanish-language Sunday service is now being held over Zoom so that congregants of all immigration statuses can safely attend. “We haven’t done this since the beginning of the pandemic,” said the church’s pastor Emma Lozano, who’s a longtime immigration advocate. “Back then we felt it would be temporary. We were waiting for the vaccine, for medicine.”

This time around, she said, she’s not sure how long her congregants will have to worship virtually. “We’re all just trying to figure out how long this is going to last – and what’s the medicine for this?” Lozano’s church has long been a refuge for migrants. In 2006, it drew national attention when the activist Elvira Arellano took refuge and resisted arrest there for months along with her young son, and churches around the US joined a sanctuary movement in solidarity.

But now, the city has come into the Trump administration’s crosshairs – and Lozano is shaken. The church has ramped up its security protocols, making sure the door is locked behind the kids coming in for the evening capoeira classes. Lozano said she herself has felt rattled, and worried about her safety and threats from Trump supporters.

Social media videos and televised broadcasts of immigration agents battering down people’s front doors or raids attended by the television psychologist Dr Phil, have pained her, she said. “It’s almost like lynchings,” she said. “There’s a perversion and some kind of pleasure they’re getting from terrorizing this population of immigrants.”

To many activists, the administration’s activities in Chicago did not come as a surprise. The city, which has been a sanctuary for immigrants since 1985, has long drawn the ire of immigration hardliners and conservative politicians. Its sanctuary status was first ordered by mayor Harold Washington, who prohibited city officials from cooperating with federal immigration agents, and required that city services were provided to all residents regardless of their immigration status. The order was eventually passed into law, and then weakened by mayors over the years. Chicago’s current mayor, Brandon Johnson has vowed to fiercely defend his city’s immigrants. On Wednesday, congressional Republicans called on him to testify at a hearing on sanctuary cities.

In the past two years, the state of Texas has bussed thousands of people – mostly from Venezuela – to the city and its suburbs, including during the dead of winter. Now, both the recent arrivals and people who have been living in the city for years without documentation have been on high alert, and advocates are straining to make sense of why and how people are being targeted.

For Yess Gómez, who has been living in Chicago for two decades, the raids have brought back a familiar anxiety – but also a defiance. “We are afraid, but fear hasn’t paralyzed us,” said Gómez, who has been involved in Chicago’s immigrant rights movement for many years. “My kids don’t deserve to see their mother hiding. And I’m not going to do it.” Instead, she has been preparing.

The Guardian is not publishing Gómez’s full surname to protect her from retaliation. She has a work permit as part of a program that delays deportations for workers who have witnessed or experienced workplace abuse, and works as a bartender. She, her husband and five children – three young kids and two in their 20s – have implemented a safety system to check in every few hours. “If someone doesn’t check in, the plan kicks in, and we start figuring out where they are. Some of us even have location tracking on our phones as a precaution,” she said.

It’s not being deported to Mexico that scares her so much, she said – it’s being ripped away from the life she’s built in the US. “What really scares me is having to start over. That’s what most of us fear: starting over again.”

During the first Trump administration, Gómez had asked her bishop to take custody of her children in case she and her husband were arrested and deported, she said. This time around, her adult children have been tasked with caring for their siblings, and contacting the family’s attorneys should anything happen to their parents.

They have also been leaning on local networks of advocates who have been patrolling and tracking Ice activity, and investigating which rumours are credible and which ones are misinformation.

Like many activists in the city, she was delighted by recent complaints by Trump’s border czar, Tom Homan, that Chicagoans are too “well-educated” about how to resist immigration agents.

“Sanctuary cities are making it very difficult to arrest the criminals. For instance Chicago, very well-educated, they’ve been educated how to defy Ice, how to hide from Ice,” Homan told CNN on Monday night.

It goes to show, she said, that people in this city know how to take care of one another. “Even though they wanted to create a spectacle here, they couldn’t do it,” she said.

In recent weeks, Chicago has been at the center of the national debate on immigration as reports of increased Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) raids have sparked fear and uncertainty in immigrant communities. However, despite the anxiety and fear, many Chicagoans have not been paralyzed by these threats, but instead have taken action to support and protect their neighbors.

From community organizations offering Know Your Rights workshops to lawyers volunteering their time to provide legal assistance, Chicagoans have been mobilizing to ensure that immigrants are informed and empowered to navigate the complex immigration system. Additionally, local leaders have spoken out against the raids, condemning them as inhumane and unjust.

While the fear of deportation still looms large for many immigrants in Chicago, the collective response to these raids demonstrates that the city is united in standing up for its immigrant population. By coming together and taking action, Chicagoans are sending a powerful message that they will not let fear dictate their actions, but will instead fight for justice and equality for all.

  • Hollywood Hasn’t Changed Since ‘CODA’

Marlee Matlin is an Oscar winner for her work in “Children of a Lesser God,” and starred in the 2021 film “CODA,” which won the Oscar for best picture, but she feels that Hollywood is so rigid that it hasn’t necessarily given her advantage when it comes to pitching projects.

“I’m not happy with the way things are,” she says. “It’s simply because I don’t know how this industry works to this day. You know, you win an Academy Award, everybody’s so excited. ‘Oh, that’s great. Things are gonna change. It’s fantastic. You’re gonna be working, offers are gonna come in,’ and they didn’t. Yes, you’ll be on that high, it lasts maybe a short little time, and then something comes up again a little while later. So what I do is I have to do it myself. I create my own projects. I have a lot of projects on my plate, and I’m still knocking on doors saying, ‘Hey, look, here’s this project, here’s this project, here’s this project.’ And studios, we set meetings and they’ll say, ‘Yes, well, we have a character who’s deaf in this one little project that’s animated, and we’ve checked that box off, so perhaps another time.’ And then we get the same answer from another studio, or this studio head leaves, and then that project falls by the wayside.”

Matlin was just one creative pushing for change in Hollywood during the Variety & Vibe Reimagining Creativity presented by Google TV & YouTube panel. The discussion included Matlin (“Not Alone Anymore”); actor and comedian Roy Wood Jr. (“Love, Brooklyn”); Oscar-nominated filmmaker Amy Berg (“It’s Never Over, Jeff Buckley,” “The Case Against Adnan Syed,” “Deliver Us From Evil”); actor Harry Hamlin (“Anne Rice’s Mayfair Witches”); and Tom Quinn, CEO of Neon. The panel was moderated by Variety senior entertainment writer, Angelique Jackson.

The creatives collectively discussed the importance of taking risks in Hollywood. For example, “Love, Brooklyn” is a romantic film, and not necessarily the gear that Wood Jr. is used to. But he enjoyed the process of trying something new.

“It’s a love story, but it’s not in the sense of there is a ‘will they or won’t they.’ There’s not a villain, it’s just people existing in love and the complicated pockets of it,” he says. “And [producer and star] André [Holland] presented an opportunity for me to be the comedic foil in a way to his character, but not in the traditional sense. For 25 years of standup comedy, you would expect, at least I expected when reading it, a much larger, bombastic, more Anthony Anderson in “black-ish”-type situation. And that’s not a knock on Anthony — I’m just saying performatively. It was an opportunity to exist in a place performatively that was a lot more still than where I normally get to exist. And the fact that Rachael Abigail Holder, our director, and André Holland both trusted me to do that. When you look at my resume, there aren’t enough things that would suggest ‘he could do that,’ but they took a chance on me. So then it’s on me to take a chance on actually nailing the performance and the subtleties of it, to find more individual pockets of humor, just when you’re not talking versus when you actually are. And it was fun.”

For Hamlin, playing a role out of his wheelhouse ended up as his favorite performances.

“I could look back on my career and pretty much every time I’ve taken a leap of faith and risked something big, it’s had a tremendous effect on my career and pushed me into another level,” he says. “I did a film in 1981 called ‘Making Love,’ which was the first studio picture involving a gay love story. All of my friends told me, ‘You can’t do that. It’ll ruin your career if you do that.’ They offered it to every other actor in Hollywood before they came to me, but I saw it as an amazing opportunity to actually do a film about something that was really happening in the world, but nobody wanted to talk about. It was a subject that was so swept under the rug at the time in the early ’80s that needed to come out into the sunshine. I took that risk and it completely changed my career, but changed it in a really, really great way. To this day, not a week goes by when somebody doesn’t come up to me at a market or a movie theater or somewhere and say, ‘Thank you so much for making that film.’ So to have been able to make a movie that changes people’s lives, gives people hope, gives them a ticket to ride, if you will. … It’s an amazing experience. So I would say that as an actor, the more we innovate, the more risks we take, the better off we will be, and that’s the better for the entire industry as well.”

Quinn says that Neon is a company built on taking bold creative risks.

“To have a vision and a belief in a slate of films, and to have a point of view and to be attracted to other filmmakers who also have a very clear, strong point of view, you have to take risks,” he says. “You know, we have a very expensive musical that we produced, which was an homage to Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals about a billionaire former oil executive who bunkered in the sort of potential future Armageddon. Now that doesn’t sound very commercial, and I will tell you that the film was well-received by half of the critics and not well-received by the other half of the critics because it was making an extraordinarily bold statement. [Editor’s note: The film in question was 2024’s “The End.”] I think in the aggregate, if we believe in something and we believe that we have a canvas too, as a distributor, as a studio, I think our slate of films, if they do matter, will appeal to audiences and we will be successful. The eclecticism across our slate includes movies like ‘Longlegs,’ which is by an incredible director, and sits right next to ‘The Seed of the Sacred Fig’ by Mohammad Rasoulof, who made the film in Iran in secret while under threat of persecution and escaped the country. Ultimately I think that if you truly believe in the power of cinema and you have a vision about what you can stand for, you will persevere here.”

Berg, who spent five years making “Jeff Buckley,” says that while making the film she interacted with people wondering why she wanted to make the film at this particular moment. Yet she says the finished product and its reception proved that art that takes risks can always win out.

“If you can get your film to the finish line and showcase it somewhere like this, then you have a chance to reach audiences and buyers in a unique way where you’re not just pitching it,” she says. “This was a blessing for me that Topic Studios and Fremantle came in and financed my film. I haven’t done this for a while, where I’m here with a film for sale. It’s so invigorating, it’s like we did it ourselves. I got to make the movie I wanted to make, and last night was our premiere, and it was just incredible. The reaction … people were crying in the bathroom and it was just wonderful to feel that the true art spoke to our audience.”

  • UFC Vet Ben Rothwell Says BKFC Champ Mick Terrill Hasn’t Faced Anything

Ben Rothwell believes BKFC Heavyweight Champion Mick Terrill is in for a rude awakening at Knuckle Mania 5.

A 17-fight veteran of the UFC, Rothwell is now 3-0 as a bareknuckle boxer and one win away from his first world title in the BKFC this weekend. Rothwell challenges the champ Terrill in the co-main event of Knuckle Mania from Philadelphia after stopping Todd Duffee in April.

‘Rocky’ at BKFC? ‘Possibility’ Sylvester Stallone Attends Knuckle Mania this Weekend

Unlike many other fighters on the roster, Terrill never picked up the MMA gloves, bareknuckle boxing before BKFC ever came into existence. Terill’s resume includes wins over champs Lorenzo Hunt and Arnold Adams, still missing a UFC name.

“The most experienced bareknuckle fighter I have fought,” Rothwell said of Terrill, 9-1 as a bareknuckle boxer. “On the flip side, I have been fighting for a long time and I’m the most experienced fighter he’s ever faced. I know he’s never faced anything quite like me. This is a huge step for him. It’s gonna be a big wake up call for him.”

“I believe he’s just tough enough that he’s not gonna flop on the ground in 45 seconds like Todd Duffee.”

Rothwell fought the who’s-who of the UFC Heavyweight division for years, the list of names not limited to Alistair Overeem, Junior Dos Santos, Cain Velasquez, and Andrei Arlovski (twice). Inside the Octagon, ‘Big’ Ben once finished four opponents in a row.

“I try to imagine if I was him and if I was him, I don’t think about it because if you do, it’s gonna be kind of daunting,” Rothwell said. “He’s never faced anything. I fought many of these guys the best, I have faced some of the best fighters in the world, there’s no doubt about it. He hasn’t fought one in the MMA realm.”

“He wanted to fight Mark Hunt… Well, I have fought Mark Hunt, I’ve lost and I’ve beat some of the best fighters in the world. I’ve been in there for five five-minute rounds. So, it’s very important for me to give him a proper introduction to what the elite fighting class of the world are all about.”

In a recent interview, UFC veteran Ben Rothwell had some strong words for BKFC champion Mick Terrill, claiming that Terrill hasn’t faced anything in comparison to the competition he’s seen in the UFC.

Rothwell, who has competed at the highest level of MMA for years, believes that Terrill’s success in the bare-knuckle fighting world doesn’t hold the same weight as victories in the UFC.

“Mick Terrill may be the BKFC champion, but let’s be real – he hasn’t faced anything like the competition I’ve seen in the UFC,” Rothwell said. “I’ve fought some of the best heavyweights in the world, and I can tell you, Terrill hasn’t faced anything close to that level of competition.”

Rothwell’s comments are sure to stir up some controversy in the combat sports world, as fans of both BKFC and the UFC debate the validity of Rothwell’s claims.

Regardless of the outcome, it’s clear that Rothwell believes in the level of competition in the UFC, and he’s not afraid to speak his mind about it. Only time will tell if Terrill will rise to the challenge and prove Rothwell wrong.

  • JJ Redick on why Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t gotten heavy minutes

Ever since the Los Angeles Lakers acquired forward Dorian Finney-Smith in a Dec. 29 trade with the Brooklyn Nets, many fans have been wanting him to move into the starting lineup. At the very least, fans want to see him get more playing time, given the fact that he appears to be the rangy 3-and-D wing the team has lacked for some time.

Since coming to the Lakers, Finney-Smith has averaged 5.9 points and 2.9 rebounds a game while shooting 36% from 3-point range. But he’s averaging a modest 23.4 minutes a game, compared to the 29.0 minutes per game he played while with the Nets earlier this season.

Head coach JJ Redick said Finney-Smith has been on a minutes restriction ever since his arrival. However, he also said the forward has been cleared to increase his playing time a bit.

JJ Redick on why Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t gotten heavy minutes

During a recent podcast episode, veteran NBA player JJ Redick shared his thoughts on why Dallas Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t received heavier minutes this season.

Redick pointed out that Finney-Smith’s playing time has been limited due to the team’s depth at the forward position, with players like Tim Hardaway Jr. and Maxi Kleber also vying for minutes. He emphasized that it’s not a reflection of Finney-Smith’s talent or ability, but rather a result of the team’s rotation and coaching decisions.

Despite the limited playing time, Redick praised Finney-Smith for his contributions whenever he’s on the court, noting his defensive versatility and energy on both ends of the floor. He expressed confidence that Finney-Smith will continue to make an impact for the Mavericks as the season progresses.

Overall, Redick’s insights shed light on the challenges of managing playing time in a competitive NBA environment and the importance of players like Finney-Smith staying ready and making the most of their opportunities.

Finney-Smith may not be an elite defender, but at 6-foot-7 and 220 pounds, he has the size to bother opposing wings defensively, and he also tends to get deflections and muck things up on that end of the floor. He has also been a reliable 3-point shooter, which is another skill set Los Angeles has lacked.

This article originally appeared on LeBron Wire: JJ Redick on why Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t gotten heavy minutes

JJ Redick, a veteran NBA player known for his sharpshooting and basketball IQ, recently shared his thoughts on why Dallas Mavericks forward Dorian Finney-Smith hasn’t received heavy minutes despite his solid performances.

In an interview with a local sports radio station, Redick explained that Finney-Smith’s lack of playing time can be attributed to the team’s deep roster and the presence of other key players in the rotation.

“Dorian is a great player and brings a lot to the table, but the Mavericks have a lot of depth at the forward position with players like Tim Hardaway Jr., Maxi Kleber, and Josh Richardson getting significant minutes,” Redick said. “It’s just a matter of finding the right balance and matchups for each game.”

Redick also mentioned that Finney-Smith’s versatility and defensive prowess make him a valuable asset for the team, even if he isn’t getting as many minutes as some fans would like.

“Dorian’s ability to guard multiple positions and knock down shots makes him a key contributor, even in limited minutes,” Redick added. “It’s all about maximizing his strengths and finding ways to utilize him effectively on the court.”

While Finney-Smith may not be playing as much as some fans would hope, Redick’s insights shed light on the team’s strategy and the importance of having a deep rotation in the NBA. It’s clear that Finney-Smith’s time will come, and when it does, he’ll be ready to make a significant impact for the Mavericks.
