  • Robert Saleh remains in play for multiple head-coaching jobs

Yes, former Jets coach Robert Saleh will be returning to the 49ers as defensive coordinator. But the dust won’t fully settle until the head-coaching jobs for which he’s under consideration are filled.

Although he canceled his flight to Jacksonville after all signs pointed to Liam Coen, Saleh remains in play for the head-coaching openings in Las Vegas and Dallas. He has interviewed for both jobs.

That said, the Cowboys reportedly are focused on Brian Schottenheimer. In Las Vegas, the rumor mill has been pointing to Pete Carroll. But until both jobs are filled, Saleh remains in play.

If, in the end, others are hired by the Cowboys and Raiders, Saleh will be back in the job that positioned him to become the head coach of the Jets.

Robert Saleh remains in play for multiple head-coaching jobs

San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator Robert Saleh has been generating a lot of interest in the NFL head-coaching market. Despite the 49ers missing the playoffs this season, Saleh’s work with the team’s defense has not gone unnoticed.

Saleh, who has been with the 49ers since 2017, has been credited with turning around the team’s defense and helping them reach the Super Bowl in 2020. He is known for his high energy and intensity on the sidelines, as well as his ability to motivate and inspire his players.

Several teams have reportedly expressed interest in Saleh for their head-coaching vacancies, including the Detroit Lions, Atlanta Falcons, and New York Jets. Saleh has already interviewed with the Lions and Falcons, and is scheduled to interview with the Jets as well.

While Saleh has yet to secure a head-coaching job, it seems likely that he will be a top candidate for several teams in need of a defensive-minded leader. With his track record of success and his reputation as a strong leader, Saleh could be a valuable addition to any team looking to improve their defense and culture.

It remains to be seen where Saleh will end up, but one thing is for certain – he is definitely in play for multiple head-coaching jobs in the NFL.

  • Buccaneers’ Liam Coen out of running for Jaguars head-coaching job, OC signing massive deal to remain in Tampa

It appeared Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen was a finalist for the Jacksonville Jaguars head-coaching job; the Tampa Bay Times even reported there was a growing belief it was the 39-year-old’s job to lose. However, Coen will not be taking the gig.

Coen is taking himself out of the running for the Jaguars’ head coaching job to remain in Tampa Bay, CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones reports. Coen will now sign a new contract and get a hefty raise with the Bucs, making him one of the highest-paid offensive coordinators in the NFL, per Jones.

Coen replaced Dave Canales as the Buccaneers offensive coordinator this past season. Some wondered if the Bucs offense was set to take a step backward, but Tampa Bay won the NFC South for a fourth straight season with a 10-7 record, while the offense ranked No. 3 in total yards (399.5 yards per game), and No. 4 in points per game (29.5). Quarterback Baker Mayfield recorded career-high numbers across the board, completing 71.4% of his passes for 4,500 yards and 41 touchdowns. However, he did tie the league-high with 16 interceptions. Mayfield became just the third quarterback to ever throw for 4,500 yards and 40 touchdowns while completing 70% of his passes.

Jaguars fire GM Trent Baalke after four seasons amid team being passed over by top coaching candidates in 2025

The Jaguars viewed Coen as a young offensive mind capable of developing quarterback Trevor Lawrence. Coen got his first shot in the NFL with Sean McVay and the Los Angeles Rams as their assistant wide receivers coach in 2018-19, before moving over to assistant quarterbacks coach for one season. He then left in 2021 to become Kentucky’s offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, before returning to the Rams in 2022 to replace Kevin O’Connell as offensive coordinator. After one season, Coen then returned to Lexington for one year to again serve as the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

Coen was one of three coaching candidates selected by the Jaguars to have second-round interviews in-person, along with former New York Jets head coach Robert Saleh and Las Vegas Raiders defensive coordinator Patrick Graham.

According to reports, Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Liam Coen has officially removed himself from consideration for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head-coaching job. Instead, Coen has decided to sign a massive deal to remain with the Buccaneers, further solidifying his commitment to the team.

This news comes as a relief to Buccaneers fans, who have seen Coen’s impact on the team’s high-powered offense over the past season. Under Coen’s guidance, quarterback Tom Brady and the rest of the offense have flourished, leading the team to multiple victories and a strong playoff run.

Coen’s decision to stay in Tampa is a huge win for the Buccaneers, as they will continue to benefit from his offensive expertise and play-calling abilities. With Coen at the helm, the Buccaneers are poised to remain a dominant force in the NFL for years to come.

  • 2025 Cowboys head-coaching search: Brian Schottenheimer set for second interview, per report

    draftkings.jpg
    Getty Images

The Dallas Cowboys are perhaps the NFL’s most unpredictable team when it comes to this offseason’s coaching carousel. Will they pry Deion Sanders from college football? Will they turn to an old friend in Kellen Moore? It turns out they might just stay in-house, as incumbent offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer is set for a second interview for the club’s head coaching job, as NFL Media reported Wednesday.

The 51-year-old Schottenheimer is “well respected in the building,” NFL.com noted Tuesday, indicating Dallas views the assistant as an “intriguing option” to replace the departed Mike McCarthy. This comes days after oddsmakers suddenly tabbed Schottenheimer the favorite to land the Cowboys’ top job, despite bigger external names like Sanders once making headlines as splashy targets.

The son of former NFL head coach Marty Schottenheimer, the Cowboys offensive coordinator has been working at the NFL level for close to three decades, although his roles in Dallas have not included play-calling responsibilities. Originally hired as a coaching analyst in 2022, Schottenheimer was promoted to coordinator after Moore’s departure, spending the last two seasons as McCarthy’s second-hand man.

Prior to joining the Cowboys, Schottenheimer spent one year as the Jacksonville Jaguars‘ passing game coordinator and three seasons as the Seattle Seahawks‘ offensive coordinator, overseeing three consecutive Pro Bowl appearances by quarterback Russell Wilson.

In the latest update on the 2025 Cowboys head-coaching search, it has been reported that Brian Schottenheimer is set for a second interview with the team. This news comes after Schottenheimer impressed during his initial interview and has continued to be a top candidate for the position.

Schottenheimer, who currently serves as the offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks, has a strong track record of success in the league. He has worked with some of the top quarterbacks in the NFL and has helped lead his teams to multiple playoff appearances.

Many insiders believe that Schottenheimer could be the perfect fit for the Cowboys, bringing a fresh perspective and innovative offensive strategies to the team. His experience and leadership qualities make him a strong contender for the head-coaching position.

As the search continues, it will be interesting to see how Schottenheimer fares in his second interview and if he ultimately lands the job with the Cowboys. Stay tuned for more updates on this developing story.

  • Robert Saleh has second Jaguars head-coaching interview – NBC Sports Bay Area & California

A reunion between the 49ers and their former defensive coordinator Robert Saleh is appearing less and less likely.

The ex-New York Jets coach has a second interview for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ head-coaching job scheduled for Friday, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported Monday, citing sources.

After relieving first-year coordinator Nick Sorensen of his duties, the 49ers interviewed Saleh for their DC vacancy on Jan. 9. The 45-year-old served in the role for the first four seasons of Kyle Shanahan’s head-coaching tenure from 2017 to 2020 before leaving to coach the Jets, and New York fired Saleh early in the 2024 NFL season after a 2-3 start.

While it’s widely believed Saleh would be San Francisco’s first choice, the 49ers also interviewed Deshea Townsend, the Detroit Lions’ defensive passing game coordinator and defensive backs coach, for their DC opening. In addition to the Jaguars, Saleh also has interviewed with the Las Vegas Raiders and Dallas Cowboys for their head-coaching vacancies.

Despite a volatile Jets tenure, Saleh built New York’s defense into one of the NFL’s best during his time there — and the 49ers Faithful are very familiar with his success as DC in the Bay. The 49ers returned to the NFL playoffs for the first time since their 2013 campaign during the 2019 season, led by a lights-out defense with Saleh at the helm.

But whether or not Saleh returns to duplicate that success with the 49ers remains to be seen — and certainly depends on how well his second Jaguars interview goes.

Robert Saleh, the defensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers, has reportedly had a second interview for the head-coaching position with the Jacksonville Jaguars. According to NBC Sports Bay Area & California, Saleh is one of the top candidates for the job and has impressed the Jaguars organization with his leadership and strategic thinking.

Saleh, who has been with the 49ers since 2017, is known for his fiery coaching style and ability to motivate players. Under his guidance, the 49ers defense has consistently ranked among the top in the league.

If Saleh is ultimately hired by the Jaguars, it would be a significant loss for the 49ers, but a great opportunity for Saleh to take on a new challenge and lead a team of his own. Stay tuned for updates on this developing story.

  • Lions players bracing to lose both coordinators to head-coaching jobs

Given their standing around the NFL, it would be a surprise if Johnson and Glenn don’t receive head-coaching jobs this cycle. Then, the question becomes how much their exit further drains the Lions’ pool as the two will likely seek to bring assistants with them to their future destination.

Center Frank Ragnow, while noting losing coaches would sting, cited the foundation for confidence that the Lions can withstand any attrition.

“I just believe, at the end of the day, this league’s all about players,” Ragnow said. “And the foundation that (general manager) Brad (Holmes) and (coach) Dan (Campbell) have set with the [cornerstone] players in this locker room, I think it’s gonna be tough for us to do anything besides have success.”

The Pro Bowl center said the talent already locked down for the foreseeable future creates confidence there would be zero fall-offs if both coordinators leave.

“There’s always talented players all over this league, but some of the talented players in this locker room are built like nothing I’ve ever seen,” Ragnow added. “Just the right-wired guys that are willing to do whatever it takes for their teammates and put it on the line.”

Players would miss any coach who leaves but understand it’s part of the process.

“In this business, you gotta do what’s best for you,” rookie corner Terrion Arnold said of Glenn’s possible departure. “And if he has the opportunity to go out there — a lot of things have opened up — I wish him nothing but the best.”

Added Arnold, smiling: “But I told him, ‘If you take a job somewhere else and we play against you, we’re gonna beat you.’”

Saturday’s loss jumpstarted an offseason for questions in Detroit. The Lions have faith that Campbell will once again find the answers.

The Detroit Lions are facing the possibility of losing both of their coordinators to head-coaching jobs this offseason. Offensive coordinator Anthony Lynn and defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn have both been mentioned as potential candidates for head-coaching vacancies around the league.

Lynn, who was hired by the Lions last offseason, has helped lead the team to some impressive offensive performances despite their struggles in the win column. His work with quarterback Jared Goff and the rest of the offense has not gone unnoticed, and he is considered a rising star in the coaching ranks.

Glenn, on the other hand, has turned around a struggling Lions defense and has them playing at a much higher level than many expected. His leadership and defensive acumen have been instrumental in the team’s improvement this season.

While it would be a blow to lose both coordinators, the Lions front office is prepared for the possibility and has already begun to identify potential replacements. Head coach Dan Campbell has expressed confidence in his coaching staff and believes that they will be able to continue to build on the progress made this season, regardless of who is calling the plays.

As the Lions prepare for their final games of the season, they are focused on finishing strong and making a case for their coordinators to land head-coaching jobs. While it will be a loss to see them go, the team is excited for the opportunity for Lynn and Glenn to further their careers and continue to make an impact in the league.

  • Bills OC Brady balances game prep, head-coaching interviews

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is squeezing head-coaching interviews with the New Orleans Saints and Jacksonville Jaguars into his busy schedule ahead of Sunday’s AFC Divisional Round game against the Baltimore Ravens.

On Friday night, the Saints and Chicago Bears announced they had completed interviews with Brady. On Saturday, Brady is expected to talk with the Jaguars.

Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Joe Brady is scheduled to interview with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday for their head-coaching job.

Per NFL rules, assistant coaches on teams playing this weekend are permitted to accept interview requests (three hours apiece) until the day before their team’s game.

On Thursday, Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken, who has already met with the Jaguars, called the process, which forces candidates to steer two ships at the same time, as “unfortunate.”

What does Bills coach Sean McDermott think?

    People are also reading…

At stake for the Bills on Sunday night: Avoid becoming the first team in NFL history to lose four consecutive divisional round games.

“It’s been awhile since I’ve been through (the process), and I can tell you from what I experienced, it’s challenging to balance both – to be as prepared as you want for both situations, playing and interviewing at your best,” he said before practice Friday. “I do appreciate the league in their approach – it’s changed over the years. They’re trying to get it to where it’s fair and conducive to being your best.”

The NFL has attempted to allow candidates to focus on their playoff games by limiting them to virtual interviews.

McDermott said he and Brady “communicated over the last couple of weeks,” on how to best carve out time for the interviews and provide advice.

“At the end of the day, Joe has my full support, No. 1 – he’s earned that,” McDermott said.

As the Buffalo Bills’ sport psychologist, Dr. Desaree Festa’s role within the organization is often unseen, but highly valued by coaches and players alike.

    Injury report

Bills rookie running back Ray Davis remains in the league’s concussion protocol after being injured last week against Denver and is listed as questionable to play against Baltimore. Davis was a limited practice participant (non-contact) again on Friday.

If Davis isn’t available, one option for the Bills could be practice squad rookie running back Frank Gore Jr.

Reserve offensive lineman/jumbo tight end Alec Anderson (left calf) practiced fully after being limited on Thursday and will play.

For the Ravens, coach John Harbaugh told reporters that receiver Zay Flowers (knee) has a “chance” to play. Flowers missed last week’s win over Pittsburgh.

    Involving Cooper

Since his trade to the Bills, receiver Amari Cooper has 22 catches for 301 yards and two touchdowns. He was acquired for games like Sunday night. Former NFL MVP Matt Ryan, now an analyst for “NFL on CBS,” agreed.

The Buffalo Bills will take on the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday at 6:30 p.m. in an AFC divisional playoff matchup. Since the Bills’ first playoff game (a 26-8 AFL divisional playoff loss to the Boston Patriots at War Memorial Stadium in Buffalo in 1963), the team has gone 6-9 in divisional games.

“Especially on third down, when you need to have it and there could be 1-on-1 matchups,” Ryan said in a phone interview. “You make a move like that midway through the season with this in mind – ‘We’re going to play Baltimore or Kansas City and we believe Amari Cooper in critical situations can win a 1-on-1.’ I do think this is the kind of game a player of his caliber can make plays with the game on the line. That was a massive reason (general manager) Brandon (Beane) went out and got Amari.”

In eight career games against the Ravens, Cooper has 32 catches for 452 yards and two touchdowns.

    Cold night ahead

Depending on the game-time temperature at kickoff (6:30 p.m.), the Bills could be playing one of the 10 coldest home games in team history, and maybe top five. The forecast calls for a low of 10 degrees.

According to Pro Football Reference, the five coldest home Bills games are zero degrees (29-23 over Raiders in January 1994), seven degrees (47-17 win over New England in January 2022), 8.9 degrees (16-14 win over the Jets in December 1993) and 12 degrees (37-21 win over the Raiders in December 1988). Allen played in the 2022 Patriots game.

The most misleading statistic entering Sunday’s AFC divisional playoff game at Highmark Stadium is the fact the Baltimore Ravens ranked 31st in the NFL in passing yards allowed this season.

The coldest kickoff temperature of Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson’s career is 17 degrees in September 2022 (a 17-9 win over Atlanta).

    Extra points

Carl Cheffers is Sunday night’s referee, and it will be his first Bills game and second Ravens game of the season – his crew called 16 penalties in Baltimore’s 30-23 win over the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 12. The home team was 11-5 in his crew’s games. … The Bills were 5-3 in one-possession games, and the Ravens 5-5 (each of their regular-season losses). … The Bills have tightened up their third-and-long defense in the last three games. The New York Jets, New England and Denver went a combined 5 of 18 when needing at least 8 yards.

As the Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator, Brian Daboll has been tasked with preparing his team for their upcoming playoff game while also juggling head-coaching interviews with other teams.

Daboll has been a hot commodity in the coaching carousel, with several teams expressing interest in him for their head-coaching vacancies. Despite the distractions, Daboll remains focused on his current role with the Bills and ensuring that his team is prepared for their playoff matchup.

Balancing game preparation and head-coaching interviews can be a challenging task, but Daboll has shown his ability to handle the pressure and remain focused on the task at hand. His leadership and dedication to his current team have not gone unnoticed, and it’s clear that he is fully committed to helping the Bills succeed in the playoffs.

As the Bills continue their playoff push, Daboll’s ability to balance his responsibilities will be crucial to their success. Regardless of what the future holds for him in terms of head-coaching opportunities, Daboll remains fully committed to his current team and is focused on helping them achieve their ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl.

  • Pete Carroll wants another NFL head-coaching job

Pete Carroll wants another NFL head-coaching job

Last year, the Seahawks unceremoniously kicked head coach Pete Carroll to the curb. This year, he’s looking for a new NFL ride.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reports that Carroll wants back in. Which means, frankly, that Carroll’s agent has specifically told this to Schefter in the hopes that Schefter would broadcast it to the world, in the hopes of generating public opinion. Then, Carroll’s agent will owe Schefter big time.

And that’s how the sausage gets made.

Carroll, per the report/strategic leak, specifically has expressed interest in the Bears’ vacancy. Which obviously means nothing, unless the Bears have interest in Carroll.

Given that the team’s No. 1 objective (we’re told) is to hire a coach who will get the most out of quarterback Caleb Williams, a defensive coach whose best NFL teams were fueled by that side of the ball most likely won’t be the right guy to pair with Williams.

Carroll could be a good fit elsewhere, depending on the specific needs and objectives of the franchise. He’s only one year older than Bill Belichick. Unlike Belichick, Carroll has actually has had success without Tom Brady on his team.

It’s hard to fault Carroll’s agent for trying to use the media to get the word out about Carroll. That’s the agent’s job. It’s not the media’s job, however, to engage in quid pro quo P.R. for coaching candidates.

It’s one thing to express authentic and organic and unsolicited opinions, like we did recently when questioning whether Brian Flores’s lawsuit against the NFL and multiple teams will stand in the way of a second head-coaching opportunity. It’s another thing to let your strings be pulled by “sources” (probably only one source, but making it plural always sounds better) who want to get their back scratched — and who will return the favor, possibly many times over.

Pete Carroll wants another NFL head-coaching job

After a successful stint with the Seattle Seahawks, Pete Carroll has made it clear that he is not ready to retire just yet. The 70-year-old coach recently expressed his desire to continue coaching in the NFL and is actively seeking another head-coaching opportunity.

Carroll, who led the Seahawks to two Super Bowl appearances and one championship victory, is widely regarded as one of the most successful coaches in the league. His energetic coaching style and emphasis on player development have made him a sought-after candidate for teams looking to turn their fortunes around.

Despite his age, Carroll shows no signs of slowing down and remains passionate about the game of football. He believes that he still has a lot to offer as a coach and is eager to take on the challenge of leading another team to success.

While it remains to be seen which team will give Carroll a chance to prove himself once again, there is no denying that his track record speaks for itself. With his winning mentality and proven leadership skills, it is only a matter of time before Carroll finds himself back on the sidelines as a head coach in the NFL.
